George’s Fundraising Mission for Nepal B

ody Mania’s Mohammed ‘George’ Jahangir has not only been counting his personal gains, but is looking to give something back thanks to a spark of inspiration while at Body Power Expo 2015. George, as he is known to his customers and friends, has been running Body Mania on Slade Road, Birmingham since 2013, and has consistently been ahead of the curve, serving a great variety of top of the range supplements, equipment and more to his ever expanding customer base. While getting ready for Body Power Expo 2015, after hearing about the earthquake in Nepal a few days before, George took it upon himself to raise some funds and

“I had an overwhelming response both at the event from the stars themselves, and from people on social media congratulating me for what I was doing on the day,” beamed George.

“I’m hoping to make this a yearly event, gathering up good items for a hamper prize to raise money for a good cause year on year.” George is also looking for other items to add to the auction to hopefully bring more money in for the appeal, so if

olverhampton’s 157th Mayor says he is looking forward to serving the city during his time in office. Councillor Ian Brookfield was elected Mayor during a ceremony earlier this month and said: “I am delighted to have been elected to serve the people of Wolverhampton as Mayor during 2015-16. “It is an honour and a privilege to asked by my fellow councillors to take this important role for the next 12 months, and to serve the people of our wonderful city as the 157th Mayor of Wolverhampton. “This year I’ll be looking to celebrate volunteering. We are hugely fortunate to have more than 10,000 volunteers doing some fantastic work in our city – they never ask for any gratitude and I’d like to highlight their dedication. “I’m also looking forward to raising

awareness of, and vital funds for, my chosen charities and community organisations, which include local food banks and soup kitchens, the Physiotherapy department at West Park Rehabilitation Hospital, the Kingswood Trust, Bilston Remembered and the Interfaith Network. “I will be holding a series of fundraising events over the next 12 months, with all proceeds going to these nominated good causes, and I’d urge the people of Wolverhampton to give them their full support so that, together, we can raise thousands of pounds for charity.” The Labour councillor for Fallings Park was born in Liverpool and moved to Wolverhampton in 1990 with his wife Paula, a Wednesfield South councillor and Mayoress for 2015-16, and their two sons. He was first elected to the council in 1995, and has a deep interest in edu-

cation, having sat on several school governing bodies including Moreton Community School and New Park School.

Aston Performing Arts Academy are inspiring Brum

t is great to be able to celebrate being an inspiration in your community with their positive infectious attitude of ‘YES WE CAN’!!! Aston Performing Arts Academy (APAA) is one such group based at the prestigious school of music, Birmingham Conservatoire. APAA started in 2001 and were known as Aston Youth Orchestra, they were renamed in 2003 as Aston Performing Arts Academy as they expanded their activities to include drama and dance. This community interest company inspires generations aged between 6 and 24 years old, giving them vocal and performance training whilst coaching professional development. The organisation directors are

Anji Daniels, Academy Director, who oversees the day to day management of the academy business, Pelego Powell, Creative & Artistic Director, responsible for students development in performance and pastoral care on and off the stage and Truchio Powell, Creative & Events Director, the overall manager of external private and cooperate events. An amazing part about this story is that Truchio and Pelego are twin brothers as well as being Directors and also perform with the Professional arm of the organization known as ‘Elements of Song’. During the last school half term the sensational Aston Performing Arts Academy (APAA) hosted their show entitled 'Inspiring Brum’ at the Crescent Theatre, exciting the audience with musical performances ranging through the ages from The Jackson 5 to Whitney Houston and classic groups like Abba and Boyz II Men. They were set to

‘inspire the audience with their performances and did just that, as they took them on a musical journey through the 70’s to the 20 century. This gave the academy the chance to showcase some of the city’s talented performers as young as 6 years old in the APAA JuniorZ , APAA’s Academy Choir and the event was headlined by Elements of Song, APAA’s professional performance group. In keeping with inspiring the youth there were guest appearances by spoken word artists Samuel King and Stephen Morrison-Burke to a sell out crowd both nights at the theatre. Creative & Events Director Truchio Powell stated “We were so excited to be able to bring back Inspiring Brum for another performance” It gives us the

opportunity to really showcase our young people on and off stage. Most of our students are proud of their city Birmingham and are excited to use this opportunity to ‘inspire’. APAA are a very busy Academy and always rehearsing for the next event. Elements of Song; the

Professional arm of the academy have recently agreed to provide entertainment to The Midlands Air Ambulance charity ball for the second year running on the 10th July. They have also been spotted performing at another corporate event by one of the Directors. “We are so honoured to be supporting such a worthy cause and to be asked to perform for the 2nd year as it is not the norm to have the same act in back to back years. We must have made a good impression of the ‘FEEL GOOD FACTOR’.” The academy continues to grow and recruit anyone interested in joining the academy. Big Vote and the Second City

n May the 7th when the polling stations opened and many were still undecided where they would put their X one thing for sure is that no seats were safe, but the campaigning in Birmingham had been relentless and those who sat in strong labour seats could not take their seats for granted. The BIG VOTE happened and needless to say that the hung vote or questions of which two parties would form the next coalition were well and truly foiled, when the Blue party won by a majority, handing David a Cameron the keys to Number 10. Only 66.% of the UK population turned out to vote, giving the UK 5 years of Conservative rule. This has led to many calling for a reform to the voting systems as this first past the post system has been declared broken and unfit, as the system appears to be biased

against some parties whilst favouring others. History was also made when for the first time the head of the three other main parties resigned within an hour of each other. Here in the second city with a large BME community and convincing Labours contingents the West Midlands was seen as one of the pivotal seats to the Downing Street victory. As communities watched up and down the country it was important following the campaign poster that littered the city regarding operation 'BLACK VOTE' supported by well known black faces Sol Campbell and David Harewood to name a few urging this community that their vote is important. In Birmingham Black Women in Politics supported each other and led a fierce campaign for their seats, which saw the councillors up for re-election gaining significant results, Cllr Sybil Spence regained her seat in Soho, Deputy Crime Commissioner Yvonne Mosquito held her seat in Nechells. But what a victory it was for Paulette Hamilton who had to battle to become the councillors to stand in the area she grew up and lives in. Her landslide victory in Handsworth Wood was more than just about the X in a box to this passionate councillor. Cllr Hamilton is set to have a busy year ahead as she has re-

l Cllr Sharon Thompson cently been appointed by Sir Albert Bore in the New Birmingham City Council cabinet following heavy criticism of the council services last year. This has seen some positions cut and new ones introduced. The appointment of Cllr Hamilton to a newly created health position in Cabinet which Sir Albert Bore has said is one of his most pleasing of his appointments. Cllr Hamilton in her new role becomes the first African Caribbean woman in the cabinet of Birmingham City Council. This appointment certainly has come as a surprise to many, not least because many expected Cllr Muhammed Afzal (Aston), a long-time ally of Sir Albert whose Human Resources committee was recently scrapped, to be to be favourite for this position. However Cllr Hamilton is proof that 'PASSION DOES PAY' as she has previously been the coun-

cil’s unpaid mental health champion, promoting support services and acting as an advocate for mental health service users in the city. This appointment has gone down very well as many has said 'there could have been no more committed member to this post' as the score of well wishes have flooded in. Congratulations also goes to Councillor Sharon Thompson who has been appointed as Birmingham's NEW Victims Champion. This is quite a role with three strands to it. Cllr Thompson will be responsible for scrutinising police and crime commissioners officers with the leaders of the local authorities across West Midlands. As well as sitting on Birminghams Community Safety Partnership and advocating/campaiging for victims. The previous post

Cllr Thompson is a fantastic Councillor who is very much the lead on homelessness in the city St Basils being one organisation very close to her heart. Sharon can often be seen putting her body on the line literally taking part in sponsored events for the homeless not just giving instructions from her chair. I'm sure she going to be a big impact her new role. Well done Sharon Thompson. Although she didn't win the safe Labour seat of Stockland Green a special mention has to be given to Conservative Candidate Rachel Toussaints. With her chosen party now in power we have heard David Cameron clearly state that he believes the first Black Prime Minister will come from the Conservative Party. Given Rachel had no real interest in running has a councillor 12 months ago, with 5 years to go the next election; can you rule her out? Ms Toussaints has challenged the narrative of the Black community to trust the Conservative Government with their vote. I like others are watching this space.

irmingham is set to become the top shopping destination outside of London as Grand Central, the city’s new £150 million premium retail and dining destination, sees well over half of its 60-plus shops, restaurants and cafes opening, or expanding from concessions, for the very first time in the city. Due to open this September, the diversity and novelty of Birmingham’s newest shopping destination, which will sit above the magnificent New Street station, is a massive draw card for national retailers and restaurateurs. Joining ‘anchor store’ John Lewis, Grand Central will welcome to Birmingham for the first time an array of leading, premium brands including: Foyles, The White Company, Hobbs, Joules, Kiehls, Cath Kidston, Pylones, Neals Yard Remedies, Paperchase, Gobstoppers,

Keith Stone, Grand Central leasing director said: “The desire from these premium retailers and eateries to invest in the city shows that Birmingham is now a national retail destination. Grand Central is not trying to compete; it’s about complementing the existing retail landscape as well as the upcoming developments which the city can expect to see this year. “Previously overshadowed by other cities, Birmingham is finally getting the recognition that it deserves for its retail offering and unique shopper experience, and it’s great to see Grand Central playing a major role in this,” Stone concludes.

Commonwealth Association Updates

he Birmingham Commonwealth Association Communites Group met again at the end of May, discussing upcoming events and ideas. Again well attended by representatives from across the many commonwealth communities in Birmingham, ideas for Commonwealth Day on March 14th 2016 were brought to the table, toying with the premise of a new Commonwealth Day Parade, an event in Victoria Square on the day, and repeating the events from this year; a flag raising and a specially marked Commonwealth Citizenship Ceremony. This year, Queen Elizabeth II becomes the longest reign-

ing UK Monarch on the 9th September 2015. To commemorate the occasion, there will be a meal on the evening that aims to have dignitaries in attendance to celebrate our Queen and longest reigning Monarch. Sted Wallen gave the rundown of the situation of the Birmingham Olympic Legacy Tour, which sadly seems to be falling on rough times with only a few months to go. They are still looking for the funds to ensure that the Legacy Tour goes ahead. It’s not looking great at the moment, but hopefully a final push for funding might prove fruitful.

One Firm One Day sees 450 staff from PwC in the Midlands volunteer for local charities

n Friday 15 May, PwC’s One Firm One Day saw a staggering 450 members of staff from PwC’s Midlands offices give up their time to volunteer in communities across the city. Mark Smith, regional chairman of PwC in the Midlands said: “The volunteer day is part of PwC’s One Firm One Day initiative that encourages employees to use their time and skills to support good causes within their local community.” “In the Midlands we are really committed to supporting community programmes, with staff in PwC’s Midlands offices giving over 6,000 hours of their time to

volunteer last year.” “Our staff choose to support the charities because they provide a range of valuable services to people with different needs.” “We are proud to be able to offer our time to support our local community, and it’s a great way to gain a better understanding of the charities’ work – and have fun at the same time!" Volunteers worked with a group of Year 10 students from Heartlands Academy, talking to them about how to increase their employability and raise their aspirations. Gardening gloves and paint brushes were the order of the day at Fisher House at Queen Eliza-

beth Hospital, where a group of 60 volunteers helped out SSAFA – a charity that provides practical help and assistance to anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Forces. At Lickey Hills Country Park, 60 people got their hands dirty installing posts and fences, and created a swale, which involved excavating a shallow linear pool to make it a valuable habitat for wildlife, while 18 staff gave up their time to attend an Alzheimer's Society session in the office to learn more about Dementia including how to spot the signs; and a Finance and Tax Masterclass was held for local Social Enterprises.

Vehicles which drive illegally in Wolverhampton bus lanes face fines from June 1 when the city council takes over enforcement. From that date, the authority will assume responsibility for bus lane enforcement from the police. Cameras installed with automatic number plate recognition technology have been installed to monitor the city’s bus lanes. The cameras will record any vehicle breaking the law and the registered owner will be served a £60 penalty charge notice. To assess the scale of the problem, the council carried out a monitoring exercise in a small sample of bus lanes and found 240 vehicles illegally driving in them over a 12 hour period. Phase one will go live on June 1 and the first lanes to be enforced are: Cleveland Street – city centre Stafford Street/A449 Wolverhampton Road/Wednesfield Road A4124 inbound Wolverhampton Road A4124 outbound Willenhall Road A454 inbound and outbound

FDI - an Entrepreneurial Model for ‘Emerging Economies’

he recent World Economic Summit in Davos, Switzerland was rather illuminating as it captured perhaps, a new beginning in the relationship between the ‘Developed North’ and the new, ‘Emerging Economies’ especially within the 53 Commonwealth states. President of the World Bank Group, Dr. Jim Yong Kim, advised that, “Countries must promote strong economic growth, invest in their people and build safety nets to ensure people don’t remain trapped in poverty”. His comments echoed a rethink about traditional –foreign aid’ versus encouraging SME foreign investment for domestic enterprises to boost relative improvements in communities mired in ‘structural poverty’. The World Investment Report stated that some $566 billion worth in foreign direct investment (FDI) was accrued over the past year. This included skills investment and goodwill capital from small firms keen to invest in developing regions. Recent figures below, capture the net effect of FDIs in key regional economies:• Inflows to Africa represented $57bn; • Investments to the Caribbean and Latin America reached $185bn.

• Inflows to South Asia reflected $36bn. Usually, FDIs combine human, financial and technical capital, assets that’re worthy of consideration when SMEs are investing abroad in essential public services (sectors) - education, health, leisure and social welfare. However, if human capital is to remain an unequivocal tool for emerging economies, small investors must adhere to these interventionist principles:• Provide one-to-one- support for domestic small firms; • Engage with early stage and underperforming SMES; • Know the distinction between high volume clients and low average deal size; • Scrutinise carefully national government policies and priorities; • Apply a cultural sensitivity approach when intervening overseas; • Develop various architectural-type models for adaptation in

Lending reaches record high at ART

l The Aston Reinvestment Trust team

RT (Aston Reinvestment Trust) saw total lending rise by 77% to over £3.1m in the year 2014/15. This continues a significant trend that started in 2012 and demonstrates that there is an appetite among businesses across the West Midlands for borrowing and investing in the future. ART is a Community Development Finance Institution (CDFI), which lends to businesses unable to meet any or all of their requirements from the banks.

In fact it often lends alongside the banks as part of a package of finance. Its loan fund comes from a combination of public and private sector support including social investment from individuals and companies keen to see the local economy thrive, creating and protecting jobs. “Packages of finance are becoming increasingly common, with a number of providers sharing the risk,” explains Steve. “We lend £10,000 to £150,000 with an average loan size of

around £30,000. Other lenders specialise in either larger or smaller loans and it makes sense for us to work together. At a time when the variety of options for finance available to businesses can seem confusing, ART is seeking to clarify its position and make it easier for potential customers to see whether its type of finance is right for them. Steve Walker says: “We are changing our name and launching a new, more interactive, website. The new name, ART Business Loans, will make it more immediately apparent what we do. We lend across the West Midlands, in every business sector.” In the past year ART has seen an upsurge in demand from established businesses wanting to achieve growth. Memorial Trust to benefit the Next Generation, in honour of Ashleigh Sealey

memorial scholarship fund set up to give assistance to students in their search for excellence was announced at its inaugural awards ceremony at West Bromwich Albion F.C. Set-up by renowned businessman and philanthropist, Tony Sealey OBE, the Ashleigh Merelle Sealey Memorial Trust was established in the memory of his daughter, Ashleigh, who died from complications related to her Juvenile Arthritis illness, in 2010. The Trust, a living memorial to her, her ambition, aspiration and passion saw a select number of students chosen to receive educational bursaries-in the form of books and equipments such as laptops-in memory of Ashleigh. The event was attended by Madame Justice Sandra Mason a Court of Appeal judge in Barbados, Euclid Goodman, Minister Counsellor for the Barbados High Commission, and Alphea Wiggins, the UK’s Deputy High Commissioner for Barbados. Welcome to ‘Camara features’ a new column where I will be spotlighting some of the most amazing charities, organisations and people I have had the privilege of working with. Be a part of my journey and learn and enjoy about being inspired. and Phil and they need to talk to both myself and my wife. I got Vi out of bed and we were told to sit down I remember my heart was beating so fast that I thought it would jump out of my chest not knowing what they were going to say. Then the policeman told us that Chris and Phil had been involved in a fight and Chris was badly injured and they need to get us to the hospital right away. We got dressed and went in the police car to Epsom Hospital. When we arrived Phil was standing there with blood on his face and he was dressed in a white forensic suit and slippers. He said later that as we arrived in the police car he thought everything would be okay now mum and dad were here. Then a big policeman came up to me and said I’m sorry you can’t see Christopher they have taken him up to the operating theatre. He then led us into a small room and said someone will come soon to let you know what is happening and left us just standing there. After what seemed like hours, some doctors came into the room and said Christopher was in a bad way. Most of the bones in his body were broken and he has lost a lot of oxygen to the brain and we could be looking at severe brain damage. We just didn’t know what to say or think. We just sat there quietly. After they had gone we asked Phil what happened. He told us that “the three of us were walking to Gill’s house and Chris was singing an Oasis song. As we walked along the road we came to the hill and unknown to us coming towards us was a gang of boys and girls, about fourteen in all. Well as we got nearer, the

gang opened up to let us pass. I went first but as I was walking through, one of the gang punched me in the face for no reason and broke my nose. In shock, I somehow clicked my nose back into place and the pain was so bad I fell to the floor and then three of the gang started to kick me in the head then I passed out.” The rest of what happened is what witnesses said in court. When Philip fell on the ground they saw three boys kicking him. They then saw Christopher going over to save his brother but two other lads got in his way and blocked him. Then another boy got around the back of him and pulled him to the floor and all three were kicking and stamping on his head. They then left him in the middle of the road which is has four lanes; a road with a maximum speed of forty miles an hour. A couple of cars came over the hill and somehow missed him. Then another car came over the hill and the driver said in her statement she thought it was a bungle of rags in the road. She ran over Christopher dragging him about forty feet down the road. When Philip regained consciousness the first thing he saw was his brother under a car wheel. A woman came running out of a house to help. She said she was a nurse and it is best not to move him until help arrives, so all Phil could do was to sit beside his brother who was unconscious and hold his hand. As we were taking in what Philip had just told us, the doctors came into the room with two policemen. Their eyes told us what they were going to say. They told us that they were sorry, they did all they could and before they

The Christopher Donovan Trust

ike many of the bereaved victims that I have met over the years, parents Vi and Ray Donovan who lost their son when he was murdered by a group of young men, have been a light of hope for many other parents who have lost their children or loved ones to violent crime. I have included in this article a part of the story as told by Ray: I feel that hearing his story you will be in awe to learn how they have coped and what they have been doing to date. Every Parent’s Nightmare... Ray tells his story. When Christopher 18, left our house on that lovely summers evening little did he know that a few hours later he would be attacked by a gang of youths and die later in hospital. Friday May 25th 2001 was just like a normal day. I came home from work, Chris was getting ready to go out and he asked me if I could give him a lift to his sister’s house. I said “I was too tired and if I drive anymore today I think I may crash the car”, so he said “okay not to worry I will call around a friend’s house and then we will walk down to Philip’s (our other son) and maybe pop into Gills house for a coffee”, which they did most weekends, and off he went and the last thing he ever said to me was “Dad I really love you” and kissed my forehead and then he left. Vi (my wife) came home. We did things like most people; have an evening meal, watch TV and then go to bed. Saturday May 26th: It was around twelve forty when the door bell rang. I was going down the stairs moaning like most fathers saying “how can two boys forget their door keys?”. But when I opened the door instead of Chris and Phil, there were two policemen standing on my doorstep. One asked if I was the father of Christopher and Philip Donovan. I said yes, they then asked if they could come in as there had been an incident involving Chris

could say anymore, Vi ran out of the door. She said later that if she ran away it wouldn’t be real. I remember I fell on my knees screaming with a doctor holding me in his arms. The hospital Chaplain and police said they need us to identify Christopher’s body. This is something no parent should have to do. I remember both Vi and I holding on to each other not wanting to enter the room and see our son dead. Before we entered the room a policeman said we are not allowed to touch him. We couldn’t even cuddle him. All we could do was just stand there. I then asked if I could kiss his forehead they said that would be okay. Here I am asking permission to kiss my own son. It was funny everyone else could touch our son but we were his parents! Now because it was a bank holiday weekend, we had to wait until Tuesday to see the coroner she told us all about his injuries. To be honest, even to today, I can’t remember a thing she said because all I wanted to do was see my son. So I said to her “I don’t want to hear anymore, I want to see my son”. She then took us to the morgue to see Chris. Both Vi and I went into the chapel of Rest. Again, we were told we couldn’t hold him. He was wrapped up like an Egyptian mummy so all we could do was just stand there, not knowing what to do or say. When we went back into the waiting room, the coroner the said “Mr. Donovan, I have bad news”. I looked at her and said “what could be worse then what I have just seen?”. She then went on to say: “because of the kicking and the car running over Chris, they have to prove what killed him and the only way to do this is to remove his brain and we would have to

wait for a chemical to come out and this takes up to four months, so we won’t be able to bury Chris for four months”. Christopher was laid to rest on September 21st 2001. Only three boys were arrested for Christopher’s murder. We then had to wait a year for the court case. This took six weeks and all three were found guilty of murder. Their ages were fifteen, sixteen and nineteen. We found out in court that they had been drinking and taking drugs for most of the evening. In fact, one of them said he was drinking from the moment he left school that day. All three were found guilty of murder. Two got life in prison with a minimum of nine to ten years. The youngest got Her Majesty’s Pleasure with a minimum of six years to serve. The magnanimity shared by Ray and Vi goes well beyond their pain and I cannot tell you the countless people both victims and perpetrators that have learned so much from this amazing couple. In 2003 Ray and Vi Donovan set up THE CHRISTOPHER DONOVAN TRUST and have been strong champions for Restorative Justice and more recently have become fully trained facilitators in Restorative Justice. Their journey started with a phone call from their son Christopher’s school teacher inviting them to take part in a Sycamore Tree Programme, a restorative project run by Prison Fellowship so with some anxiety, they went along to a local women’s prison. It was the first time since their sons death that they felt they had a voice and that the prisoners were thinking, feeling human beings, just like them! They now travel around the country visiting all types of prison establishments (adult and young people) telling they story in the hope it will turn someone away from crime. Their work continues to develop: many Youth Offending Teams (YOTS) have invited them to speak directly with youngsters, spelling out how “five minutes of

madness” could change their lives forever also they talk about what the Ripple effect of crime really means - family and the community are always affected by thoughtless actions. All this is in the hope the young person, whose next stop might so easily be custody, will see the effect of their actions and turn their lives around. Some YOTS are working with Ray and Vi to help train staff in how best to handle and understand victims to avoid further pain. Ray and Vi also visit schools to talk to the pupils about the dangers of drink and drugs and knife, guns and gang life, and also tell them what life might be like in a Young Offenders Institution. They also run workshops for Restorative Justice Council for practitioners to help them think through how to work with victims of crime, to make sure that the restorative process is focused on, and truly meets their needs. In July 2011 Ray and Vi met one of the young men who killed their son, soon after he had been released after eight years inside, in a properly facilitated Restorative Justice Conference, This was an emotional and powerful meeting; The young man said sorry and that he will never forget what pain and harm he had caused. The gang culture of today in this country are now recruiting kids as young as five to carry their drugs and weapons for them? They hope to teach the young people of today that being a member of a gang is not cool and when they do go to prison, which most of them do, the so called family known as their brotherhood won’t be bothered to travel miles to visit them and the only people that care for them will be their mum and dad. People ask the Donovan’s why do this? Their answer is simple “If we can stop just one life from being taken and not have a mother and father go through what we went through”. We also want to have an amnesty box in every school for the young people to put their nasty video games and these will be shredded. The reason we feel so strong about this, is because when Chris was killed, one of the youths that killed him thought it was a video game and that Chris would get up and walk again. These games are messing up our young people’s minds and we must put a stop to them! Restorative Justice (RJ) is a different way of tackling crime, based not on punishment but on healing the harm that has been caused. It brings offenders into faceto-face conversations with their victims --- and sometimes that dialogue is so powerful it can transform the future of each participant. t the ‘Extraordinary Lady Speaks Conference,’ an extraordinary surprise was on hand for one nominee as Phoenix Newspaper columnist, Marcia M Spence, received far more than she expected. Lecturer Marcia, a broadcaster and radio presenter – she hosts her ‘On The Couch’ programme on NewStyle Radio 98.7FM, and founder and CEO of Success Makers, attended the special conference, celebrating and lifting women to achieve, and, of achievement, as she was nominated for a Star Award for inspirational women, for her own outstanding success, in business and her own life, generally. Organised by Sandra Nelson of Lift Effects, which lifts individuals by individuals lifting others, the ‘Extraordinary Lady Speaks Conference,’ recognised Marcia for her ongoing goal of lifting women, through-

out the Midlands and further afield, with the coveted Star of All Stars Award, at the Fairfield Hall event, in Surrey. which In receiving her award, Ms. Spence spoke of her own, often traumatic and at times life-threatening, journey through personal tragedies and illnesses to now being the face of women who look to inspire. She said: “Did I expect to receive the Star of All Stars award? No, not at all, but I am truly thankful for the votes and likewise for the recognition.” A jubilant Marcia also received a £105 cheque which she donated towards a cure for Trigeminal Neuralgia, an extremely severe facial pain that tends to come and go unpredictably in sudden shock-like attacks. Trigeminal Neuralgia is the very disabling chronic illness Marcia has survived, to date, and is a reminder of her raison d’être. After receiving over 6 nominations, she was presented with the Star of all Stars Award and crowned by Her Royal Highness Muzvare Betty Makoni where she was described as a; “phenomenal woman who is more than worthy of this extraordinary award!” The Extarordinary Lady Speaks Conference gave very special VIP treatment to every female attending what was a beautifully prepared event, with over 300 people attending for the inspirational talks and iconic awards ceremony. Lift Effects CEO Ms. Nelson, overwhelmed by the huge success of the day, declared: “I am a graced lady.”

fter making seismic changes in the 1970s, punk was always seen as a vanguard in music and fashion to this day. Move a generation forward and you will see and here evidence of those heady days when the likes of Siouxsie Sioux led a female revolution on the charts while Vivienne Westwood inspired designs the likes of which has not been seen on any catwalk since those halcyon days. Move forward to the 21st Century and Sharon Miles is cementing her own signature style that is set out to make today's fashionistas stand out in a crowd like never before. From studying in Fashion and Textile at university, her curiosity in finding out how things would

look, if made in a different way, with completely different materials, has led her to be the talk of the fashion-world as she is securing her own punk-chic that is make many a fashion-concious individual look up and take note. No 'fly-by-night' with delusions of grandeur, Birmingham-born Sharon has always had an eye for 'different,' when it comes to

auto-couture, ever since she was a child. And now she is leading the way with her own unique style of counter-culture wear that is creating a storm on today's catwalk. With no obvious creativity in her gene pool, her stark blend of colours, materials and shades were evident when, at junior school, she made her first waistcoat before she was commissioned to make strikingly unique wedding dresses, in her teens. “Inspired by the punk era and the influence of Vivienne Westwood, I would get pre-made patterns for a variety of

items, from some of the family and friends, and they would want me to create the design, but with a completely different material and some sort of slant on the norm,” she recalled. “I like to learn new things,” she said. “I learned how she (Westwood) did her stuff and found how very similar my designs were in style. In my work I've always wanted it to stand out. To be talked about and to be wanted.” “I'm always thinking outside the box and keeping that air of diversity in tact. And I'm always improvising!” “I describe my designs more as costumes. As a form of art as my creativ-

ith his energetic reggae, dance and jazz hybrid, Diego Flex has already blown crowds away at sell-out shows in Manchester, Leeds and and Nottingham, the Jamaican-born star is always eager to please his audience as he continues to dominate the wider music scenes and entertain all before him. Wowing audiences up and down the country, his his smash-hit single; ‘Benefit Street,’ his slant on the much-maligned Birmingham street brought to the nations conscience after the highly-publicised series of the same name, Spanish Town man Diego, has ever-since the very early days, been out to entertain and energise crowds wherever he goes. Citing reggae legends; Beenie Man, Buju Banton, I-Octaine, Bounty Killer and Sizzler as his musical influences, the 34-yearold, who’s always at home on the stage, has already won recognition, winning the grand final of the ‘Tastee Talent’ show, at a very early age, back in Jamaica. Following that, he represented his native country in the ‘Jam In

UK’ talent show and the Fly Over show before teaming up with a group of fellow-artist/musician, touring and performing at carnivals across the UK. In 2014, along with headline act Steel Pulse, chat-toppers, Musical Youth and the master of ‘ragga-fusion,’ Apache Indian, he brought his contemporary style of dancehall to The Drum’s hugely successful Simmer Down festival, in Birmingham’s Handsworth Park. His ‘Benefit Street’ hit tune cementing itself as that summer’s seminal hit. Backed by his Mighty Vibez band, he’s on the verge of creating his own, more international, approach to his music, with ‘Benefit Street’ being the crossover success on a national, then international, basis. “I have a passion for music and enjoy making people feel happy with it,” says Flex. “I’m on a mission to bring back real, creative music. The kind that people will remember in years to come.” Despite his own personal struggles; “I am still making music, about my life, and engaging with like-minds whilst I’m fighting issues of my own.” As his personal challenges continue, his music too, continues with his life story brought to life in his songs. ‘Total Eclipse’ and ‘Crime-Stopper,’ just two which presently sums up his own predicament, living, working and trying to survive.

ell here I am again - and as I’m getting ready to do this months column, I’ve just realised, I have been doing this now for a whole year - and obviously somewhere along the line, people keep reading it - so for that I thank you all. My first ever column was about Birmingham Pride, and yep, I went again - do you know what, one of the things I love about Birmingham, is no matter what the occasion, the people pull together and can put on a parade, and festival, which is primarily to celebrate the LGBT community, but is attended by people of all colours, ages, sexualities and religions, shapes and sizes from all over the country and beyond - and it all passed without any trouble at all - now that makes you proud to be a brummie. On a serious note though guys - something happened a few weeks ago, which has left me

I have a longtime friend - and do you know when you meet that certain someone and not only do you become friends, but you become family - well that’s what this friend is to me - our kids went to school together, we’ve attended parties together, we’ve cried together and laughed together, been to each others family functions etc etc because that’s what we are FAMILY. Tuesday 12th May 2015 - we heard the tragic news, that no one really should ever hear my best friends daughter Fiona Reid, was tragically killed in a car crash, while she was on holiday in Jamaica. Fiona was 32 years old, lived in Aston, and worked in a doctors surgery in Handsworth. Mom to two amazing young young children, a 4 year old girl and a 10 year old boy - they were her life, her reason for living, her reason for existing. She had been taken from her

kids, her parents, her sisters, her family and friends in such a horrible horrible way. Things like this happen to other people, we read about it all the time - but oh my god, when its someone close to you its a whole different story. Its bad enough that Fe was taken in the way in which she was - but the hardest thing of all is that she isn’t home yet with her Mom, with her kids, her sisters. The family have set up a go fund me page, which in a matter of days £15,000 was raised - some given by complete strangers who had never met Fe, but had only read about the family trying to raise funds to get her home - a fundraiser was held at the Emerald Club, Green Lane, and another £7500 was raised there. Hopefully the family will be able to bring Fe Fe home soon, where she belongs, and finally have a bit of peace. But I’m going to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to everyone out there who has donated, even those who didn’t know Fe personally - but this has restored my faith in the knowledge that there are some good people out there. Rig, they try to outrun the ruthless warlord's henchmen in a highspeed, deadly chase through the post-apocalyptic Wasteland. Director George Miller returns to the franchise he created 30 years after the last instalment in what can only be described as one of the most glorious reboot/ sequels in cinema history. Make no mistake, Fury Road is not a remake; this is most definitely the Max we have met before – a man haunted by visions and the voices of those he couldn’t save. What makes Fury Road so special is that, while it ties in beautifully with the trilogy of movies that came before it, you don’t have to have seen them to understand what is going on as everything you need to know about Max and the world he lives in is explained through visions and voice-overs. So, for the uninitiated – those of you who have never before seen a Mad Max movie (who are you people and what the hell is wrong with you?) – You can still watch Fury Road and have an absolute blast. Not that Fury Road is a difficult movie to follow, as it is not a movie with an enormous plot that features countless twists and turns; it is a simple

story that doesn’t pretend to be anything more as it barrels forward at such a breakneck pace that you won’t even care that you could write the entire plot of the movie in three short sentences. Considering George Miller has not directed a live-action feature film in almost twenty-years, with his last being 1998’s Babe: Pig in the City (...no, honestly) it is truly astounding what he has accomplished with Mad Max: Fury Road. The action in this movie is some of the best you will ever see. It is difficult to explain just how refreshing it is to see a big-budget movie rely so heavily on practical effects and stunt-work as opposed to endless CGI. Watching over one-hundred real cars ploughing through a real desert at diabolical speeds, crashing into each other and causing real explosions while real stuntmen and women jump from vehicle to vehicle and leave piles of flaming wreckage in their wake is absolutely exhilarating. It’s difficult to recall another blockbuster that felt this real. Casting Tom Hardy in the role of

Mad Max - Fury Road Max Rockatansky, a role made famous by Mel Gibson, was absolutely perfect and he not only does justice to what Gibson did, he surpasses him. He takes the role with both hands and makes it his own. With limited dialogue, he emerges as the darkest, most efficient and most human Max we’ve ever met. The weight of the movie doesn’t rest solely on Hardy’s shoulders though, as Charlize Theron is there to share the load and what a wonderful job she does. What could have been a one-dimensional character in the hands of a less capable actress winds up being a deep and rich human whom we relate to and root for. Hardy and Theron are fantastic together and we can only hope this isn’t the last time we see them together on-screen. From a technical stand-point,

esmerised by Lena’s writing style and inexplicable forwardness, I am awaiting her next published piece as this one left me wanting more. It is a book for females, yes. Although, I would not be surprised if men reached out for it too - out of pure curiosity about the female mind, body and strange ways. Her attitude towards all things feminine are written in a non-feminist way, it is an honest and straight-to-the-point kind of ‘guide’ which every girl, woman, teenager should read. She misses out nothing. She draws a vivid and unsettling image of a woman’s mind with regard to diets – otherwise known as obsession with one’s weight; friends, love and sex, and of course boys. Lena Dunham has often been described as the ‘voice of the generation’ and I truly believe and support that statement because she says it how it is, finally. Nothing is censored and she discusses subjects which have

been labelled as taboo for too long, which is why I am ever so grateful that Lena is not afraid of those. What we need to hear and know is finally exposed in a form of awkward real life scenarios taken from our socially inadequate author. Her collection of essays all crammed into the book sum up common phases a woman/girl goes through. Not only is she a wise girl, but also very talented writer kind of girl. “Youth, with all its accompanying risks, humiliations, and uncertainties, the pressure to do it all before it’s too late.” She puts things in a way that can’t be denied. And this is what the 21st century needs. A woman can be a woman without being overly-feminist or having the page three figure. Times are changing and it is not a time for clichés or statements such as ‘women are getting a voice’. It’s a time for women becoming heroines, protagonists as opposed to staying silently in the queue of a supermarket with a trolley containing eggs and milk, and at long last doing whatever they like, looking the way they are and being

By reading the plot, most would assume Fury Road would be a dark, grim and ugly movie, but George Miller made the conscious decision to make the movie as vibrant and colourful as possible in order to distance his movie from other post-apocalyptic fare...and it works. Mad Max returns to our screens after a 30-year hiatus and leaves every other blockbuster in recent memory choking helplessly on his fumes. It is the perfect storm of blockbuster filmmaking, with everything coming together gloriously to form the biggest, crazi-

est, most balls-to-the-wall, dickswinging action movie in recent memory. It just let’s it all hang out and says “This is me! Enjoy!” It is absolutely glorious on every conceivable level and you will leave the theatre with so many endorphins firing in your brain, it will feel like you’ve taken a whole heap of illegal narcotics. That’s what Mad Max: Fury Road is – It’s a drug and it’s one you simply won’t be able to get enough of. George Miller has already confirmed that he is working on a sequel entitled Mad Max: The Wasteland and I truly cannot wait until I get my next fix.

alsall College students, Hope Breakwell and Tom Doyle, will be battling it out against each other to be named Britain’s top student hairdresser after they both made it through to the national final of a prestigious competition, run by one of the world’s largest cosmetics suppliers. The Level 3 Hairdressing students impressed judges in the regional heat of the Wella XPOSURE competition in April and were amongst five students chosen for the grand final in London. Twenty students from colleges across the Midlands competed in the regional heat at Dudley College, where they were challenged to recreate their commercial cut and colour from the previous photographic heat. 24-year-old Hope and Tom (25) will now travel to Wella World Studio in London where they will pit their skills against 18 of the best hairdressing talents in the UK. The winner will walk away with £1,000 worth of training vouchers, a toolkit worth £500, the chance to shadow a top industry professional and educational support for a year. Wella XPOSURE is the leading nationwide hairdressing competition for students. Now in its sixth year, it offers hairdressing students the opportunity to compete in an inter-college challenge. The Natural Hair Show

f you missed the Natural Hair Show held at The Drum in Aston on the May Day Bank Holidayyou missed quite the event. Even from entering it was clear to see and feel the buzzing and positive atmosphere surrounding the show - especially with the unique, eccentric styles of hair in

both in the show and of those just spectating! The stalls set up by various entrepreneurs stole the show, especially hearing the stories behind the businesses. One stall, set up by the business ‘Aviela’ focused on the advantages and uses of shea butter; products ranged from shea butter haircare to shea butter skincare and much more. But the story behind the business was truly inspirational Patricia Monney (the director) told of she had heard the devastating news that her daughter would be unable to walk and was advised by doctors to use shea butter on her. M i r a c u l o u s l y, Patricia’s daughter began to walk and Patricia decided to research the varying uses of shea butter and eventually, after some hard work, started ‘Aviela’! Another business –

‘Akhu Designs’, founded by Lorene sold handmade clothes, bags, hair accessories (and much more) all beautiful and prominent with vibrant tribal patterns and colours. Lorene told the story of how she always had a passion for sewing and after having her child,

wanted to work from home and so pursued in a future in sewing and designing. Other stalls obviously used culture as their inspirations, ‘Pieces by Keke’ being one, a business that used creativity to create exclusive, amazing, intricately designed jewellery. A stall that really emphasised its African roots and culture was ‘Super Funky Me’- the vivid, colourful feel of the stall stood on its own, let alone teamed with the fabulous earrings, hair scarves, note books- all covered in unique tribal prints- definitely made this stall stand out. The haircare stalls were just as interesting, one ‘Kittylocks Hair Care’ specialised in all natural, hand and homemade shampoos, conditioners, hair oils and many more, all specialised in making hair (of all hair types) longer,

thicker and healthier; with the sweet smells and aromas it had, it was hard to miss! ‘Dee Naturals’ was a very diverse business which offered a multitude of things - clothing (branded with images of natural haired women), and the opportunity to join natural hair workshops to ‘inspire and Empower women of all ages’, their slogan ‘Inspire to Empower’ also caught my eye as inspirational in its own sense. Whilst talking to the founder I learnt that she took inspiration for her business from her daughters- learning to empower themselves. But although part of the show the businesses were not the only fantastic thing about it, it was also the people who went! One, Medina, stood out from the crowd with her striking, peachy style and even more jaw-dropping hair! Her custom style definitely caught the eye of the press being ritzy, beautiful and quirky! Fabulous! These businesses were just some of the variety of stalls available- all catering to different aspects. Overall, this event was a well put together social event which celebrated the achievements of hard working business people who came together to celebrate the uniqueness of natural hair. It was truly inspiring to hear the ladies’ stories about how they founded their businesses and watched them prevail, and what an amazing chance for them to showcase their talents.

ample, the territory of Alsace-Lorraine has been traded between France and Germany on three different occasions. Typically speaking, war becomes very intertwined with the economy and many wars are partially or entirely based on economic reasons. Some economists believe war can stimulate a country’s economy (high government spending for World War II is often credited with bringing America out of the Great Depression by most Keynesian economists) but in many cases, such as the wars of Louis XIV, the Franco-Prussian War, and World War I, warfare serves only to damage the economy of the countries involved. For example, Russia’s involvement in World War I took such a toll on the Russian economy that it almost collapsed and greatly contributed to the start of the Russian Revolution of 1917.

One of the starkest illustrations of the effect of war upon economies is the Second World War. The Great Depression of the 1930s ended as nations increased their production of war materials to

Among forced migrants there are usually relatively large shares of artists and other types of creative people, causing so the war effects to be particularly harmful for the country’s creative potential in the longrun. War is further argued to have a direct impact on artistic out-

put, as it disrupts the production processes and distribution of artworks. Since creativity in the arts is often an expression of intense feeling, and as war affects the frame of mind of an artist, it has a negative effect on an artists’ individual life-cycle output. It is not uncommon that during Wars, cultural institutions, such as libraries, are seen as “targets in themselves; their elimination was a way to denigrate and demoralize the enemy population.” It is important to know about and understand the impact such destruction can have on a society because “in an era in which competing ideologies fuel internal and international conflict, the destruction of libraries and other items

of cultural significance is neither random nor irrelevant. Preserving the world’s repositories of knowledge is crucial to ensuring that the darkest moments of history do not endlessly repeat themselves.” The political and economic circumstances, in the peace that follows war, usually depend on the facts on the ground. Where evenly matched adversaries decide that the conflict has resulted in a stalemate, they may cease hostilities to avoid further loss of life and property. They may decide to restore the antebellum territorial boundaries, redraw boundaries at the line of military control, or negotiate to keep or exchange captured territory.

Negotiations between parties involved at the end of a war often result in a treaty, such as the Treaty of Versailles of 1919, which ended the First World War. A warring party that surrenders or capitulates may have little negotiating power, with the victorious side either imposing a settlement or dictating most of the terms of any treaty. A common result is that conquered territory is brought under the dominion of the stronger military power. An unconditional surrender is made in the face of overwhelming military force as an attempt to prevent further harm to life and property. For example, the Empire of Japan gave an unconditional surrender to the Allies after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (see Surrender of Japan) and the preceding massive strategic bombardment of Japan. A settlement or surrender may also be obtained through deception or bluffing. Many other wars, however, have ended in complete destruction of the opposing territory, such as the Battle of Carthage of the Third Punic War between the Phoenician city of Carthage and Ancient Rome in 149 BC. Andy Hamilton MBE - his Legacy lives on in Ladywood Community School of Music by Max Marriott

ucked neatly behind a tower block off Ladywood Middleway nestles The Ladywood Community and Health Centre, where where saxophonist Andy Hamilton MBE sowed the seed for what’s now known as The Ladywood Community School of Music. And there people regularly met to provide residents with the opportunity to learn about music. Jamaica-born Band-leader Hamilton formed his first band in 1928 before emigrating to the UK in 1949.

Settling in Ladywood, in Birmingham, he formed his own band and jazz club, becoming a huge player in the Midlands Jazz scene, but it wasn’t until he was 73 before he recorded his first album; ‘Silvershine,’ which became the biggest selling Jazz album of that year. In 1996, he was awarded an Honorary BA degree by Birmingham University and a Millennium Fellowship for his work in community education, in 1999, before receiving his MBE in 2008. Just short of his 90th birthday he was made an Honorary Fellow of Birmingham Conservatoire. His life, just like his music was

rich and colourful as he continued to play, teach and promote music until his 94th birthday. He died peacefully on June 3, 2012. Richard Jones, who worked closely with Hamilton, is the current caretaker of the Ladywood Community School of Music, making sure that everything runs smoothly for musicians and learners alike. Not only running the music club Richard is still heavily involved with updating the websites keeping information flowing all on a voluntary basis. Fellow saxophonist, Curtis Nesbitt, paid the ultimate respect to the legend that is Hamilton, as it was he who taught the non-playing music lover to play the instrument. Now a member of the Notebenders, Nesbitt regularly plays live gigs and is also teaching too. He said: “I jumped at the opportunity as it was a privilege to teach. It’s a way of giving back.”

“Andy would have loved it, he was the inspiration for me and I wanted the chance to pass on my love and passion to a new generation.” On the school he says: “The Ladywood Community School of Music could be in jeopardy for the first time this year, through government cuts the previous grant awarded by the Community Chest has stopped we will have to look for future funding, the school relies heavily on the goodwill of tutors who are not paid for their work, the hire of the building and other administrative costs still have to be met if the club is to continue.” “Ultimately we provide professional music tuition to residents of Ladywood and surrounding areas, a much needed musical cultural oasis, without our service many would not have the chance financially to participate in music lessons or the opportunity to perform in public giving students the real music journey experience.” Today, Andy Hamilton’s name lives on with granddaughter, Rochelle Bel Navis, teaching the violin at the school.

nspired by the innovations and technical breakthroughs in coinage at Matthew Boulton’s Soho Mint in the 18th century, Birmingham Museums Trust, Soho House and artists Chris Poolman and Elizabeth Rowe launched ‘Good Money – A Currency Competition for Handsworth’. The launch event on Saturday 23rd of May attracted members of the community from all walks of life. The event saw Sikh, Christian, Afro-Caribbean, Muslim and many other traditions and denominations come together to celebrate the launch of three new coins. Following a public vote, the three winners from a shortlist of 15 were selected. They included: • Bhai Sahib Bhai Mohinder Singh Ahluwalia OBE, Chair and Spiritual Leader of Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha UK, who has added so much to interfaith, social justice, regeneration and creating harmony. • Mykal Brown, who has helped thousands of youngsters back into education through music; • Merrise Crooks-Bishton, who has worked in community education in Handsworth for more than 40 years, The artists worked with Soho House, the former residence of industrialist Matthew Boulton, and by drawing on the site’s history decided to produce a set of new Handsworth coins. Family supports diabetic patients with thousand mile cycle ride

he family of a patient with long-term diabetes will cycle over 1,000 miles to raise money for other diabetic patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Mandy Proffitt, 52 from Brownhills, Walsall, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes over 30 years ago, after the birth of her first child. Inspired by Mandy’s positive attitude, despite undergoing countless operations and procedures, including surgery on both shoulders, her right knee and both eyes, Mandy’s caring family are raising money to give back to the staff that have cared for her over the years. Husband Paul Proffitt, 54, said: “Myself, our two sons, Paul Junior and Harry, and our nephew, Thomas Eustace, will cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End in June. “We want to raise as much money as possible for all those who have given such great care to Mandy over the years, so we

will be splitting our sponsorship between QEHB Charity’s Diabetes Fund and Diabetes UK.” He continued: “Through it all Mandy hasn’t complained. Through adversity she has battled on. If she can do that, we can definitely do this.” The ride will commence on 6th June and end on 14th June, which marks the beginning of Diabetes Week in the UK. The family will pass through the QE on Monday 8th to meet QEHB Charity and Diabetes UK representatives, as well as many of the QE hospital staff who continue to support and care for Mandy. Mandy, who worked as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse with the QE diabetes team for some years, added: “I’m so proud of my family and I’m delighted that the boys have decided to take on this challenge. “Although I have Type 1 diabetes, all of my family are all fit and healthy, and this is something I am especially grateful for. I am proud to call them mine and I am

always inspired by their support.” Throughout the ride, the couple’s nephew, Steven Woolley, will drive the Motorhome in which the group will sleep, while Mandy will follow on in the team car providing medical support if necessary. pioneering breathing programme at a Birmingham hospice changed the life of a Bromford mum-of-three. Just six months ago, 55-yearold Catherine Savin found breathing so difficult she could hardly get out of bed. But now, after taking part in the John Taylor Hospice Fatigue, Anxiety and Breathlessness (FAB) programme she has found a new lease of life. Catherine was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in November 2013 after experiencing shortness of breath, which was to have a devastating impact on her life. “COPD was just a group of letters to me – it didn’t mean anything,” she recalled. “All I knew was that it made me suffer. I used to feel tired all the time, coughing and wheezing so much that I couldn’t even walk down the street.” Catherine lives at home with her daughter and three granddaughters. “It was upsetting for my family to see me like that. The only thing I could find to say to my kids was that I’m going to die.

It must have made them feel terrible.” Referred to John Taylor Hospice in November 2014, Catherine began the nine week FAB programme in February. Created by staff at the hospice, FAB helps people with severe breathing problems to manage their symptoms through exercise and cognitive behaviour therapy. It made the world of difference to Catherine. “We learned about what goes on in your lungs when you’re finding it difficult to breathe and how to stay in control,” she said. “I understand my illness a lot better now and I know how to cope with it - and that makes me feel less afraid. FAB really opened my eyes. It was life-changing. “I don’t get that heavy feeling in my chest as much now and I take each day as it comes. I’ve just finished making a blanket for my baby granddaughter Maisie-Lei. She’s nine weeks old. I also love flower-arranging. If I’m not feeling up to finishing it, I can set it to one side and then come back to it after a rest. “I’ve never known my breathing to be the way it is. Everything feels so much easier. I’m an en-

tirely different person now – I can’t thank them enough.” The FAB programme was created by John Taylor Hospice senior clinical occupational therapist Faye Collins and senior clinical physiotherapist Louise Tipson. The hospice’s respiratory palliative care nurse Philippa Campbell also helps run the sessions and visits Catherine in her home. “If it weren’t for Philippa and the rest of the team at John Taylor Hospice, I wouldn’t be here today,” said Catherine. “They helped me so much. Nothing you can say to them will shock them – they understand. They go through it with you and they’ll literally hold your hand if you need them to. The FAB programme was launched at John Taylor Hospice in 2011 and has so far supported more than 200 people like Catherine. Philippa said: “We’re all overjoyed at the progress Catherine has made. As a nurse, there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing someone we have cared for back on their feet and smiling again. That’s what the FAB programme is all about – giving life back.

any of our males appear to be pregnant. It is not an uncommon sight to see men whose swollen bellies make them look pregnant. They have what I call the male pregnancy syndrome. This condition is associated with a high incidence of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, circulatory problems and metabolic disorders like high levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and uric acid in the blood. Medical research suggests that a man with a waist measurement of over 39 inches will increase his risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease by over 500%!

The Problem

The obesity of the male pregnancy syndrome involves an accumulation of fat on the upper trunk - from the neck to the abdomen, often without the arms, legs or buttocks being involved. Doctors know this as 'apple' shaped or truncal obesity. We fibre call it 'beer belly' or 'big gut'. The liver is particularly prone to be strangled by this fat creating a condition called fatty liver disease. Excess of simple carbohydrates in the diet stimulates the overproduction of insulin and the development of a hormonal disturbance called insulin resistance. Pear shaped obesity is more common in women, with fat accumulation in the lower abdomen, thighs and buttocks, most of it located beneath the skin. This kind of fat is less

The Solution

The usual recommendation to lose weight by just cutting back on food consumption often fails to deal with this kind of obesity. The individual may lose some weight (mostly muscle) from their arms, legs, neck and face with relatively little fat loss from t h e abdomen. This is particularly true of those diets that simply cut back on fats. Much of the epidemic of abdominal obesity is due

Exercise:

Exercise is very important but exercise alone, especially just abdominal exercise is not effective in dealing with male pregnancy. The solution involves 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. Make nutritional changes your first priority. Then, I recommend adding 30 minutes or more of brisk walking or other aerobic activity, three to five times weekly depending on your fitness level. Then a more comprehensive exercise program including muscle building resistance training can be introduced. events and activities across the UK as the campaign has gone from strength to strength over the years, reaching those who wanting to know if they can foster care for children-many of whom have had a hard start in life and are yearning to experience the stability and support. With over 63,000 children living with 52,500 foster carers across the UK, Fostering Fortnight 2015 will also provide the opportunity to discover some kind of connection to fostering. Furthermore, the campaign will also be reaching out to busi-

nesses and employers, to make them realise the vital role they play in facilitating foster care by encouraging workplaces to develop new foster family friendly policies. Of course, not every fosterer is able to foster any one, or more, child (or children) and there are also many children who need to be fostered, so if anyone thinks they could become a parent to a child or children through adoption, perhaps it's time to take that first step.

Local ‘Brilliant Club’ O Students celebrate success

ver the last term, Stockland Green students have had a real opportunity to be involved in the 'The Brilliant Club'. The award winning charity that seeks to increase fair access to highly-selective universities offers a national programme which currently works with over 5,000 students in 200 schools across the country and 20 of the top third of universities in the UK! The Scholars Programme focuses on developing advanced skills including independent study, critical thinking and communication skills; enabling students to reach their maximum potential in English. The programme is designed to replicate the university experience and consists of a series of six university-style tutorials,

two study skills workshops and a final assignment. The tutorials will typically be delivered once a week during school hours, by a PhD tutor from a selected University. On Saturday 16th May twelve

students who have completed an extended final assignment which challenged them to work above their current key stage, together with two members of

staff had the privilege of attending a graduation event at the University of Nottingham. This involved a tour of the campus, a study skills session and the chance for the students to meet and ask questions of current students and admissions staff at the university. During the day they also took part in a formal certification ceremony where they received a certificate to acknowledge and celebrate their achievements on the programme. Parents were also invited to this special event. Miss Heer, English teacher said ‘Our students were impeccable. It was so overwhelming to see our students graduating with some phenomenal results’. It was a very proud day for students, their parents and of course Stockland Green School.

One Caribbean Television Celebrates Caribbean-American Heritage Month

ne Caribbean Television (OCTV) will host a reception in the nation's capital to celebrate Caribbean-American Heritage Month, which is observed in June. The reception, to be held on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 in the Rayburn House Office Building, will be hosted in conjunction with the Office of U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee. The event will bring together Ambassadors from various Caribbean nations, Members of Congress and Caribbean business and cultural leaders to commemorate Congresswoman Lee's role in championing the historic bill that officially established the celebratory month. "We believe it is fitting to unite Caribbean stakeholders in the celebration of an important month for the millions of people of Caribbean ancestry living in the Diaspora," said OCTV's newly appointed President of Sales & Marketing, Mark Walton. He added that Congresswoman Lee will be honored for her unrelenting commitment to

the region and the Diaspora. Walton said One Caribbean Television is also celebrating its 10 year anniversary of uniting the Caribbean to the world and providing a platform to highlight the beautiful people and places of the region. For the more advanced divers, the Chikuzen, a sunken vessel located 12 miles northeast of Virgin Gorda, is a remote site that is home to various types of sharks and schools of barracuda. Another top diving site is The Cathedral at Jost Van Dyke that known for its high ceilings and magnificent display of sunlight that shines through its opening.

The Middle Ages gave rise to geometrically shaped trees and shrubs, which gave way to Renaissance representations of mushrooms, urns, temples, apes, donkeys, oxen, carts, and peacocks. But then the 16th-century English philosopher Sir Francis Bacon dismissed the art form, stating, “They be for children.” A familiar feature in gardens since the 1900s topiary art is often entered for judging at flower shows and high end blue-ribbon events the world over. FIFA president Sepp Blatter said: “The new monitoring system is a very concrete measure in order to ensure that football sends a clear

message for diversity and against any form of discrimination.” Manchester City’s Ivorian African Cup of Nations winner, Yaya Toure, subject of racist chants in Russia while playing for his club, expressed his appreciation that FIFA is taking "this issue very seriously. I’m very satisfied to see that they are putting in place concrete measures to stop behaviour which goes against the spirit of our sport.” The new monitoring system emerged from recommendations made by the FIFA Task Force against Racism and Discrimination, established in 2013, to find concrete solutions against discrimination in soccer.
