This year marks the 76th anniversary of commemorating the Windrush Generation, as over 200 organisations across the UK raised flags to celebrate ‘Windrush Day’.

In Birmingham, people also honoured the life and works of the late Dub Poet, actor and activist, Benjamin Zephaniah, with a day of celebrations, as WAWI (Ex Service personnel), BAPA (Black & Asian Police Association), the West Midlands Police, and the Birmingham Lord Mayor’s Office, to mark the internationally celebrated orator. This taking place before a vibrant and colourful Carnival Procession (costumes designed and made Professor Black), led by Windrush Carnival Queen 2024 winner, Kristina Gordon, saw

an effervescent group of dance troupes of up to 90 dancers “Bring it to Brum” and ‘Dance with Sago’ from Birmingham and beyond – and that, following the raising of the Windrush flag in Centenary Square. June 22, saw the highly celebrated Reverend

NIGEL FARAGE’S THIRD POLITICAL PARTY BUT THE SAME MESSAGE ON EUROSCEPTICISM AND IMMIGRATION

Some of the main criticisms levelled against politicians of all colours in the UK include: their lack of transparency, their general disconnect from ordinary people, their inconsistent and changing messages, and their inability to communicate in clear, simple language in answering questions. For many people, however, they find Nigel Farage a little different, even if they do not agree with his views. His messaging has

to ignore him, it could be argued that he has singlehandedly helped ensure these two related issues are on the agenda of the main political parties.

In 1992 Farage left the Conservative Party because of its decision to sign the Maastricht Treaty which helped create a closer political union within the European community. The following year he became a founding member of the UK Independence Party (UKIP). The focus of the party and Farage was based

also believes the UK would be better off outside the EU, so that the country can make its own rules and control its own borders. This is what helps to link his euroscepticism and immigration policies.

Far from going away, despite the vote for the UK to leave the EU, which Farage described as Britain’s independence day, Britain still does not seem to have control over its borders especially with regard to the increasing number of immigrants entering

election. From a fringe issue in the 1990s, immigration has become a central point in British politics today. Furthermore, it could be argued that it was because of Farage’s influence why David Cameron called for the Brexit referendum. Although Nigel Farage has failed six times between 1994 and 2015 to win a seat in Parliamentary elections, he has nonetheless been a constant presence in British politics and, whether he is liked or not, he at least has been consistent in

been very consistent. Whether we find him irritating or inoffensive, Nigel Farage has been a constant presence in British politics who has managed to divide opinion as well as unite significant sections of the population. For almost forty years, this one political figure has been proclaiming the same message and is now galvanizing his third political party. The central question here is whether it will be third time lucky for one of Britain’s foremost advocates of euroscepticism and anti-immigration in the upcoming general elections. Furthermore, try as some have,

on Right Wing euroscepticism, and British nationalism. He was the leader of UKIP from 2006 to 2009, and 2010 to 2016. Following the Brexit campaign and referendum in 2016, he formed the Brexit Party in 2019 and was the leader until 2021. It would subsequently change its name to the Reform UK. Although Farage has therefore served as leader of three different political parties, his ideology has largely remained the same. This straight talking politician wishes to limit the number of immigrants who can enter the UK because the population is rising too fast. He

the country whether illegally or legally. In a recent study (April 2023) by the Migration Observatory at Oxford University, 52% of the people questioned, said immigration numbers should be reduced. Overall, people seem to be concerned about the issue of immigration. It is this sort of information and feeling among many people which partly helps to explain why Nigel Farage’s popularity has increased in recent weeks to a point where it is thought, that the Refrom UK Party could seriously challenge and eclipse the Conservative Party in the upcoming general

his message. Perhaps because he has never been in public office in Britain, he is able to speak his mind in ways that most political leaders do not. It would be interesting to see what would happen if Farage were to win a seat in Parliament. My suspicion is that he would remain the same free-speaking person, as it would be difficult to change after almost forty years in the public’s eye. He’s managed to influence British politics without being in Parliament and it would be interesting to see what would happen if he finally wins a seat.

SUTTON COLDFIELD CARE HOME TOASTS KEY MILESTONE

Acare home in Sutton Coldfield, in the West Midlands, pulled out all the stops to mark a special anniversary.

It was party time at Care UK’s Mercia Grange, on Lichfield Road, as residents and team members came together to celebrate the home’s sixth birthday. On the day, team members organised a circus-themed party with a host of games and musical activities to get everyone’s toes tapping, including a special sing-along with singer Fran Dwane and a dancing session with bubbles.

Adding to the festivities, the home’s chefs prepared circus themed birthday cakes for everyone to enjoy. Residents and team members dressed in bright circus colours and red clown noses and the home’s walls were adorned with ribbons, balloons and banners. A horse even visited the home to join in with the festivities.

To mark the occasion Home Manager, Michael McNelis, hit a pinata, while residents enjoyed mocktails and a tasty BBQ. Ghislaine Evans, 70, said: “I really enjoyed every single part of the party!

“Singing, dancing, and seeing the pony. I think it was a brilliant idea to have the circus theme.

“The decorations were so colourful, with the staff putting a red nose on mimicking a clown.”

Michael McNelis, Home Manager at Mercia Grange, said: “We had a fantastic time celebrating our sixth birthday in true Mercia Grange fashion – with plenty of music.

“It has been an incredible six years, and we are grateful for everyone who has been part of this journey with us. From hosting memorable themed events for the community to joining in nationwide initiatives to promote reading or make residents’ wishes come true, it is safe to say we have been busy – but we wouldn’t change it for the world.

“We can't wait to see what the future has in store for us; may the years ahead be just as exciting as the last six.” Mercia Grange is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing, dementia, and short-term respite care.

The three-storey care home, which features 67 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.

BIRMINGHAM AIRPORT ADVICE TO CUSTOMERS

Birmingham Airport is launching additional temporary measures to help passengers pass through security this summer.

The measures include opening an enlarged temporary structure providing multiple ‘liquid check stations’ to ensure that customers’ cabin baggage* complies with new Government regulations introduced this month. The facility will be staffed by third party customer service specialists who will check that customers comply with the temporary liquid rules on cab-

in baggage rules.

These extra liquid checking stations are essential to support the airport’s existing security and customer teams now subject to these additional restrictions. Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport, said: “These new measures are designed to give passengers a smoother and easier experience though security.

“Our enlarged teams will be on hand to explain the new liquid rules, we all have to comply with, and help passengers prepare for security. The more we can do to-

gether to reduce the number of bags that don’t comply with these rules, the more we can reduce queues at security screening.

“Our additional teams aim to help customers travel through the airport with the minimum of inconvenience arising from these restrictions this summer. As always, our advice is to only turn up when your airline has advised and remember that only containers of 100ml, or less, of liquids, pastes and gels can be carried in cabin luggage.”

Birmingham Airport is imple-

menting these additional temporary facilities to help passengers overcome the re-reintroduction of these rules. Since the restrictions were introduced on June 9th, Birmingham Airport has had to remove around 1.5 tonnes of liquids, pastes and gels every day to make sure that customers comply with the Government regulations. Customers should not turn up earlier than their airline advises, as their check in may not be open.

The Changing Spectrum Impact of the NGO Sector

According to ‘The Global Journal’, there are an estimated 10 million non-governmental organisations (NGOs) worldwide with a market value of $US 355121.32 million (2022 estimates).

This is set to rise to $US 606605.43 million in 2028, a 9.3% increase.

The term “non-governmental organisation” was created in Article 71 of the Charter of the newly formed United Nations in 1945. An NGO is described as any organisation that is independent from or of government influence and has not-for-profit ethos (GrantSpace).

This burgeoning sector impacts on economic development, trade facilitation and healthy communities in continental regions such as:

ASean Moran and Sheena Tandy (restructuring and insolvency), Keith Spedding and Matthew Shephard (corporate), and Kim Walker (intellectual property).

Andrew Taylor (pic), partner and head of restructuring at Shakespeare Martineau, added: “The completion of this sale is beneficial for both parties – it will provide continuity to Jankel Armouring Limited’s customer base and create new opportunities for some of its skilled workforce, while NP Aerospace will continue to increase its market share and progress key contracts working with customers such as the Belgian Ministry of Defence. We are thrilled to have been involved and look forward to seeing the business thrive.”

Bankai Group President and CEO secures coveted spot in Capacity's Power 100 List for second year running

ing the carrier industry, making the Power 100 List a highly sought-after distinction.

The list spotlights the sector's most influential leaders, who are driving innovation and progress. "Being named to the Power 100 List for the second year running is a humbling honour," said Mr. Brahmbhatt.

"At Bankai Group, we are always fuelled by a constant desire to push the boundaries of what's achievable in telecommunications." Dr. Raghavendra Hunasgi, Group CMO of Bankai Group, echoed this sentiment, adding: "Mr. Brahmbhatt's future-forward guidance continues to be a driving force for Bankai Group's success.

“This recognition is a testament to

his exceptional leadership." Bankai Group continues to pioneer secure and scalable solutions for the telecom and fintech industries.

They have established themselves as leaders in voice and SMS services while simultaneously developing the most secure fintech platform in existence. An unwavering commitment to excellence ensures that Bankai Group remains at the forefront of the industry.

Under Mr. Brahmbhatt's continued leadership, Bankai Group is poised to lead the charge in groundbreaking initiatives. They empower businesses worldwide by offering cutting-edge connectivity and next-gen digital transformation solutions.

• North America (the United States, Canada, and Mexico).

• Europe (Germany, France, UK, Russia, and Italy).

• Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, Korea, India, and Southeast Asia).

• South America (Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, etc.).

• The Middle East and Africa (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa).

The NGO sector comprises charity companies, trusts, foundations, faith groups and allied voluntary associations and networks that plug gaps in essential services. These services consist of education, training, social welfare, gender awareness and youth development. In conflict-ridden environments, NGOs offer humanitarian assistance; inter alia, food, transportation, medical care, information, advice, guidance and other relevant support.

Thousands of trustees and volunteers combined, avail themselves to do ‘social good’ whilst aiding in human advancement annually (Fig 1).

Figure 1: Leading Regions by NGO Distribution.

• USA has 1.5 million NGOs (Human Careers).

• UK has 488,619 non-profit organisations (Charity Excellence Framework).

• Ghana has 300,000 NGOs (Commonwealth Network).

• India has 187,395 registered NGOs (CSR Universe).

• South Africa has 50,000 NGOs (Human Rights Library, University of Minnesota).

• Kenya has over 12,000 NGOs (National Council for NGOs in Kenya).

• The Caribbean and Latin American Region has 1,949 NGOs (NGO Explorer).

Noteworthy, NGOs like commercial entities, face challenges around investment capital, quality personnel, business planning and other resource limitations. External factors such as policy changes, economic recession, currency fluctuations or evaluations and allied market vagaries, also impinge on the performance of this sector. Yet NGOs perform multifaceted roles across national and international frontiers.

• They plug gaps in essential public services.

• They help create peace and stability in conflict-prone areas.

• They add monetary value via

cost effective/efficient services.

• They influence social policy through altruism.

• They are renowned for their lobbying and representation prowess.

• They possess flexible and resilient pedigree.

• They have highly motivated and experienced volunteers. As the reduction of public expenditure becomes the norm in fiscal prudence and political statecraft, NGOs will be called upon to play a more active role in the delivery of public services at local levels. This means that directors or trustees will have to take the necessary steps; namely:

• Boosting strategic capacity and operational capability through long-range planning.

• Assessing and evaluating the impact of labour market trends on the procurement of goods and services.

• Focusing on the retraining of staff and volunteers to deal with contract compliance, project development and evaluation; and

• Instituting quality control measures to improve tendering leverage and bidding performance.

During a recent concert, Chris Brown found himself in an unexpected predicament when a stage malfunction left him suspended in midair. The incident occurred during his performance of the hit song “Under the Influence,” part of his ongoing tour. Despite initial attempts to rectify the situation, the singer was left hanging for several minutes, prompting visible frustration.

According to The Breakfast Club, the crew worked to resolve the issue, Brown was seen gesturing and expressing his irritation. The malfunction disrupted the flow of the concert, leading

to a temporary halt as technicians scrambled to bring him back to the stage safely. Fans watched anxiously as the situation unfolded, with many taking to social media to express their concerns and support for the artist. Eventually, the technical team managed to lower Brown to the stage, allowing the concert to resume. Despite the disruption, Brown continued his performance, demonstrating professionalism and dedication to his fans. The incident, while unusual, highlighted the unpredictable nature of live performances and the challenges that can arise.

In the aftermath, Brown took to social media to address

ADOPTION & FOSTERING

FIRST ‘FOSTER FRIENDLY’ SCHOOL LAUNCHED IN NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE

Anew initiative to encourage fostering by North East Lincolnshire Council has seen its first school join.

Waltham Toll Bar Academy has agreed to become a ‘Foster Friendly’ employer, committing to support staff who are already foster carers, or those who may choose to become so in the future. The scheme was launched during the recent Fostering Fortnight activities, encouraging businesses and organisations across the borough to support foster carers.

A member of Lincolnshire Gateway Academies Trust, the academy, as with others signing up to the initiative, will offer benefits to include additional annual leave

for appointments and training.

Principal of Waltham Toll Bar Academy Nigel Whittle said: "We are pleased to support North East Lincolnshire Council's campaign and proud to become the first 'Foster friendly' school in the borough.

"We are aware of the shortage of foster carers and, as an employer, are committed to promoting their much-valued work and supporting colleagues who wish to take on such important roles. Foster parents can provide the stability a child needs and transform their life chances.

“It can also be a rewarding experience, knowing you've made the difference to a young person's prospects. We wish the campaign

every success and reiterate our willingness to be involved and partner North East Lincolnshire Council in initiatives that benefit children across the area."

Martin Brown, the Trust’s Chief Executive Officer, said the initiative would be rolled out to its other schools, which include Cleethorpes Academy, Reynolds Academy, also in the resort, and Pilgrim Academy in Immingham.

North East Lincolnshire Council’s Children’s Services Director, Ann-Marie Matson, welcomed the announcement: “I’m delighted Waltham Toll Bar Academy has become the first ‘Foster Friendly’ school, and hope that other academic settings across the area will follow suit, supporting

in a 3-3 draw, after the club provided them with free tickets. The t-shirt promotion was proposed by Hayley, a foster carer with the council, who wanted to encourage others to become carers with the local authority and celebrate those who are already part of the team.

Hayley said: “My husband and I have been fostering with Swindon Borough Council for nearly 14 years and as foster carers we are always looking at ways to help

staff who are also foster carers.

“Foster carers provide homes for vulnerable children and young people. Many of these young people need support whilst they adjust to their new environments, and this can require the need for additional support from our foster carers.

“If they have jobs elsewhere, they may need additional time and support to help these children, which is where a ‘Foster Friendly’ organisation could prove vital. We welcome Waltham Toll Bar Academy and the wider Trust to the scheme.”

Hayley added “My friend Rachel works for STFC and we thought what a great opportunity to team up with your friend and our local football team to help us work together as a community in promoting fostering in Swindon. Hopefully this will highlight and promote the need for new local carers to come forward and enquire about becoming a foster carer.”

Former footballer, Pelé, celebrates fostering over 70 children since retiring

Former professional footballer, Pedro "Pelé" Monteiro, has said that having fostered more than 70 children over the past 10 years has been the most "amazing" experience of his life.

The former West Bromwich Albion star, together with his wife, Jo, started fostering following his retirement from the game.

And, since then, the pair have also been fronting a campaign led by another of his former clubs, newly promoted Premier League side Southampton F.C. and Southampton City Council to find more foster carers.

Describing fostering as "that thing that you've got inside of you that you want to help", Portuguese-born Pelé, who also had spells at AFC Totton and Havant and Waterlooville FC during his career, went on to say: "We make them all feel part of one family.

“It's not ‘like this is us and this is you’, it's everybody being the same. That's how we should be."

He added: “When a foster child walks into the house and we make them smile, is amazing".

Jo said: "We know the background of why they're with us, but that doesn't change how we welcome them."

The couple have two birth children, Rhaianna, 15, and Taelan, 12, and recently officially welcomed 15-year-old Theo into their family - having fostered him for the past 18 months.

Theo (right in pic with Pelé) said: “When I first met the family I felt really welcomed, and it always makes me want to try my best so that I can keep making them proud".

He added: "It's great to have some place where I can come home, feel welcomed and loved and to have a family."

"It's really life changing." Taelan added: "It's just amazing to be around new people every single day."

The 12-year-old said: “All of them are my friends and if my foster siblings were happy then I'm happy". Jo added: “Watching foster children become the best versions of themselves is the biggest reward".

The season-long initiative between the club (Southampton FC) and Southampton City Council's fostering service focuses on recruiting foster carers from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Greg Baker, director of community at Southampton FC, said: “Having Pelé and Jo involved has been huge because fans want to listen to him".

He added that the city council had already received over 30 inquiries, which is "way more than they would get in a typical month". More than 7,000 new foster families are believed to be needed across the UK, with more than 500 children waiting to be placed in Southampton alone.

Swindon Town Football Club have teamed up with Swindon Borough Council’s fostering team to back their appeal for more foster carers to come forward and provide homes for children who have no-one to care for them.
The EFL League 2 club’s players wore special t-shirts during the warm-up before the final match

CHIHUAHUA EXPANDS ITS EMERGING WINE INDUSTRY THROUGH A CLUSTER

Chihuahua, the capital of Mexico's largest state of the same name, aims to become the epicentre of an emerging wine industry through the Chihuahua Wine Cluster.

Five educational institutions have joined this initiative, implementing seven programs related to

wine production and the accompanying tourism services. The Chihuahua Wine Cluster has grown in production and value, becoming an economic development pillar.

It currently includes 54 labels in the state, employing over 500 workers and producing more than 181 billion pesos ($10.7 billion). Additionally, a residential complex with surrounding vineyards is being built along the highway from Chihuahua to the neighbouring city of Juárez.

This marks the beginning of an entire town whose economic activity will be based on the wine industry. Mónica Pinoncély Esquer (pic), president of this cluster, said that the industry's expansion is facilitated by the suitability of Chihuahua's land for growing various types of grapes.

The region's diverse microclimates allow for a wide variety of vines, producing high-quality grapes with minimal water needs.

"There is close cooperation with the Autonomous University of Chihuahua and the cluster to develop the necessary skills for winemaking. It's not just about making wine,” she said.

“You need specialized accountants, chefs, tourism experts, and lawyers who understand the industry and create laws to support its development." Pinoncély noted that Chihuahua is transitioning from artisanal production to forming a significant industry, incorporating tourism and business expansion through a system involving coordinated efforts from the private sector, government, and academia.

"We were the crazy ones who

wanted to make wine in Chihuahua, despite being told we couldn't produce quality wines,” she said.

“We never thought of competing with Bordeaux, nor did we imagine we could compete with Ensenada (Baja California) or Parras (Coahuila) or other states that were growing." However, she recalled that wines from five wineries in the state capital have won gold and silver medals at the Brussels World Wine Competition and the Mexico International Wine Competition in Ensenada, Baja California, since 2011.

Located in the centre of the vast state, Chihuahua City has access to almost all regions, positioning it as the focal point for sales and supplies in this sector. Unlike other wine regions, it grows hand-inhand with tourism development.

The Brend Collection develops entry-level training programme for aspiring young chefs

The Brend Collection, a family-run group of hotels located in Devon and Cornwall founded over 50 years ago, is spearheading an innovative training academy aimed at nurturing the chefs of tomorrow.

While the hospitality industry still grapples with recruitment challenges stemming from the enduring effects of the pandemic and the exodus of workers, the initiative is seen as crucial for ensuring a robust workforce. With 11 hotels within the Brend Collection, the programme offers a comprehensive career pathway across its portfolio, empowering the next generation of chefs with mentoring, training, and the opportunity to gain invaluable experience at different venues.

This strategic approach not only benefits the individual chefs but also bolsters the collective strength of the Brend Collection's culinary teams. The initiative illustrates the Brend Collection's commitment to cultivating and investing in its workforce.

By providing a structured career progression, the programme not only nurtures talent but also creates opportunities for growth and advancement within the organisation. Executive head chef Stuart White leads the charge in implementing this transformative programme at Sidmouth's Victoria Hotel.

Drawing upon his wealth of experience in managing large kitchens within the Brend Collection, Stuart is dedicated to addressing the shortage of skilled chefs in the industry. His commitment to excellence shines through in the comprehensive training programme, tailored to empower aspiring chefs to excel in the culinary world.

“There are ongoing challenges faced by the hospitality industry,

particularly regarding staff shortages, and it's more important than ever to invest in the future of our workforce," remarked Stuart. "By training aspiring chefs, we not only ensure the sustainability of our own establishments but also contribute to the hospitality industry as a whole." Under the expert guidance of the Brend Collection's head chefs and mentors, young chefs gain hands-on experience across various kitchen departments, honing their skills in butchery, patisserie, sauce, and banqueting.

The programme also emphasises innovation, creativity, and adaptability—essential qualities for success in today's culinary landscape. Stuart said: “Through the training across the Brend Collection we hope to equip chefs with a comprehensive skill set covering all aspects of the culinary profession.

“It touches on everything such as food preparation, menu creation, the significance of sourcing ingredients locally, and supporting West Country food producers. We also hone in on the importance of understanding customer preferences and adapting to evolving demands over time and they'll gain an understanding of the operational aspects of running a kitchen, including financial management such as ordering food, understanding value, and effectively managing budgets.

“It's a thorough programme that will really help empower the next generation of chefs to excel in this dynamic and constantly evolving industry and to develop a passion for it." The programme also offers a supportive environment where mentorship and career progression are prioritised nurturing talent from within, providing opportunities for growth and advancement within the organisation.

Another remarked: “We are set for a cringefest this Eid. I’ll get my popcorn ready.”

On Thursday 23 May

a live performance of Opera Rara's Donizetti Song Project happened at London's Wigmore Hall.

Artist Ambassador Ermonela Jaho and Artistic Director Carlo Rizzi performed rare Donizetti songs, as well as songs by Bellini, Verdi, Gounod and Viardot. This recital continued the multi-year Donizetti Song Project, which will see the recording and performance of the composer's nearly 200 solo songs, discovered in a recent research by Roger Parker, Opera Rara's Repertoire Consultant and an internationally known expert on Donizetti; a great many of them completely unknown.

In the Donizetti Song Project, Opera Rara plans to create a new edition of the songs and then record them in eight individual albums. This ambitious programme will

include live performances by the internationally renowned artists featured on each album, as well as a "salon" series for emerging artists.

The Donizetti Song Project, one of the most ambitious in Opera Rara's 50-year history, aims to add a substantial body of work to the solo song repertoire through recordings and performances, making a claim that Donizetti is one of the genre's most significant composers in the nineteenth century. This Opera Rara recital was generously supported by Elena Baturina who became a supporter of Opera Rara's Donizetti Song Project last year.

'BAD BOY' Lawrence

Responds to rumours of health problems

Martin Lawrence, known for his roles in movies like Bad Boys, recently reassured fans about his health.

During an appearance on Hot 97’s Ebro in the Morning, the actor responded to the rumours sparked by incidents during his Bad Boys: Ride or Die press tour. Fans grew concerned after noticing Lawrence appeared to slur his words in a video interview and seemed unsteady at the Bad Boys premiere, where he held onto Will Smith for support.

Host Ebro Darden brought up these concerns during their chat, according to Variety.

“Now Martin, everybody’s talking about you on the balcony waving at people, you’re looking around, where you’re looking around?

“Were you looking around like, ‘Yo, this is massive?'” Darden

asked. “Because people took it like there was something wrong with your health.”

Lawrence explained that his reactions were simply due to the overwhelming crowd size at the premiere, saying: “I was like, oh, this is rock concert stuff. What the hell is going on? I was like, for a movie?”

When prompted to address the worries directly, Lawrence confidently stated, “I’m fine. I’m in God’s hands. I’m blessed, you know? I’m glad to be waking up every day. I’m all good. No need for people to be concerned.”

“I’m healthy as h—. Stop the rumours!” Lawrence emphasized.

Meanwhile, the concern for Lawrence’s health may have stemmed from a previous incident in 1999 when he collapsed from severe heat exhaustion and was hospitalized in a coma for 3 days.

Midlands Air Ambulance

Charity hosts new High

Sheriff Doug Wright MBE

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity invited the new High Sheriff for the West Midlands, Doug Wright MBE, to its airbase and charity headquarters in Shifnal, Shropshire, to find out more about its lifesaving pre-hospital emergency service.

Doug Wright MBE DL, who was recently elected as the High Sheriff for the West Midlands, demonstrated his passion and support for the work of the emergency services by committing to use his position as High Sheriff to encourage young people to become cadets. This made his visit to Midlands Air Ambulance Charity was all the more fitting, as the organisation is dedicated to encouraging and fostering future talent and inspiring the critical care paramedics and pre-hospital emergency medicine doctors of tomorrow.

Emma Gray, chief operating officer for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, said: “We were honoured to welcome Doug Wright MBE for a tour of our airbase and charity headquarters, which was rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), and so Mr Wright could learn more about our lifesaving pre-hospital emergency service.

“Many members of our aircrew clinicians began their careers on cadet programmes so it was important to engage with Mr Wright to explore ways in which we can work collaboratively to involve young people with the vital work that emergency services do across the West Midlands.” Doug Wright MBE DL, High Sheriff for the West Midlands added: “It was inspiring to visit this best-in-class charity who are delivering such exceptional work.

“It was great to have a tour of their cutting-edge new facility on the Shropshire/West Midlands border and to meet some of the wonderful crew that deliver such a vital service. At 20-years-old, some 38 years ago, I had a very bad road traffic collision that resulted in a very long hospital stay.

“Getting the right specialist help to the scene of an incident is truly vital and time is greatly of the essence. They can reach the centre of Birmingham in around ten minutes by air.

“This charity really is best in class and making a huge difference to the West Midlands and surrounding counties.” To find out more about Midlands Air Ambulance Charity’s lifesaving work, visit midlandsairambulance.com and follow the organisation on social media.

HEALTH CITY CAYMAN ISLANDS UNVEILS ADVANCED CERVICAL CANCER TREATMENT THROUGH BRACHYTHERAPY

The Radiation Oncology Centre at Health City Camana Bay in the Cayman Islands has announced the introduction of Brachytherapy (BT) for cervical cancer treatment, providing a cutting-edge option for women affected by this prevalent gynaecological cancer.

Brachytherapy (BT), derived from the Greek word “brachy”, meaning “short”, is a sophisticated form of interventional therapy. This technique involves delivering high doses of radiation directed into or close to cancer cells, inhibiting their ability to increase.

BT is recognized for its efficacy in treating locally advanced cancers, including those of the cervix, breast and prostate. It is typically incorporated into a

broader treatment regimen, including external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and chemotherapy.

The primary advantage of BT is its ability to precisely target tumours while having minimal impact on surrounding healthy tissue.

Dr. Vikas Roshan (pic), Senior Consultant Radiation Oncologist at Health City Cayman Islands, emphasizes the importance of a multidisciplinary team approach for effective brachytherapy delivery. This team includes:

• A radiation oncologist to evaluate suitability and define treatment specifics

• A medical physicist for precise dose calculation

• A radiation therapist and nurse for comprehensive patient care Brachytherapy is available at Health City as a high-dose-rate (HDR) option. HDR is an out-

patient procedure with a shorter treatment duration (minutes).

HDR offers advantages such as precise radiation placement and enhanced protection for health care providers against radiation exposure.

“Depending on the tumour stage, BRT may involve either an intracavitary technique or a combination of intracavitary/interstitial approach,” explains Dr. Vikas. For intracavitary treatment, a device holding the radiation source is placed near the cervix in the vagina.

In cases where the tumour is more extensive, interstitial techniques are also employed, using needles to ensure thorough radiation delivery across the entire tumour. The inauguration of the radiotherapy centre at Health City Camana Bay in May 2023 marks the beginning of opera-

tions at the institution’s second Grand Cayman hospital.

Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) are also available, with the centre planning to introduce additional specialized services, including Blood Irradiation (BI) and Extracorporeal Irradiation (ECI). With this expansion, later this year, the medical complex will also welcome a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), an emergency pavilion with a critical care unit, a bone marrow transplant unit, and an extensive multispecialty program featuring robotic surgery.

This expansion coincides with Health City’s 10th anniversary, celebrating a decade of innovative health care solutions and patient care excellence.

Successful separation surgery gives hope to Filipina conjoined twins in Riyadh

A team of Saudi doctors has successfully conducted a landmark separation surgery on Filipino conjoined twins, Akhizah and Ayeesha, granting them a new lease on life and marking another milestone in the Kingdom's renowned Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme.

Akhizah and Ayeesha, just 16 months old and born in Panabo City, Davao del Norte province, Philippines, arrived in Saudi Arabia earlier this month. The twins were accompanied on the journey by Hashima, their 19-year-old single mother who was abandoned by her husband after the birth of the twins.

The family's journey was facilitated by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) and the Saudi medical team. The twins were transported aboard a medically equipped evacuation plane provided by KSrelief, ensuring their safe arrival and immediate medical assessment in Riyadh.

The surgery was led by the esteemed Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Supervisor General of KSrelief and a distinguished paediatric surgeon with over 30 years of experience. Dr. Al Rabeeah has successfully overseen 60 separation surgeries, and the programme has reviewed 136 cases from 26 different countries since the program's inception in 1990.

This year alone, Dr. Al Rabeeah has performed four successful separation surgeries. The twins, Akhizah and Ayeesha, shared one liver, presenting a complex medical challenge. However, the expertise and dedication of Dr. Al Rabeeah and his team ensured a successful operation.

The medical team is now closely monitoring the twins' recovery, with optimistic expectations for their health and future. Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah expressed his gratitude for the support and collaboration that made this surgery possible.

"This success is a testament to the dedication and skill of our medical team and the unwavering support of the Kingdom's leadership," he stated. It brings us immense joy to see these children given a chance for a better life

The Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme continues to be a beacon of hope for families worldwide, demonstrating the Kingdom's commitment to humanitarian aid and medical excellence. The programme's success not only highlights Saudi Arabia's advanced medical capabilities but also its compassionate approach to global humanitarian efforts.

CHTAS INAUGURAL MULTI DESTINATION MEDIA TRIP SPOTLIGHTS CARIBBEAN DIVERSITY

The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA)’s multi-destination media trip, held in May, showcased the region’s diverse cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and distinctive experiences, highlighting the connectivity and growth of inter-island travel.

Journalists Tyler Fox (Travel Off Path), Simone Harvin (Bleu Magazine), and Julian Belinque (Travel2Latam) explored the varied landscapes, cultures and experiences across St. Lucia, Barbados, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. The journey began in St. Lucia, where the group discovered the island’s iconic natural attractions and enjoyed unique experiences.

They took a dip in the therapeutic Sulphur Springs and crafted their own chocolate bars at Project Chocolat, followed by lunch at the breathtaking Jade Mountain. There, the group was escorted by the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority’s Rondel Charlery, Francine Holder and Ernie George; and Darcel Choy of Marketplace Excellence.

Next, a quick stopover in Barbados allowed the media to explore one of the island’s geological marvels, Harrison’s Cave, with an escort by Cara Jean-Baptiste of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI). In Jamaica, the journalists visited Montego Bay for Caribbean Travel Marketplace before heading to Kingston to experience

the island’s rich cultural heritage at the legendary Bob Marley Museum.

The last stop was the Cayman Islands, where the group experienced the destination’s incredible natural beauty at spots like the Queen Elizabeth II Royal Botanic Park with its vibrant flora. They also had an up-close encounter with stingrays at the famous Stingray City, delved into the art scene at the Visual Arts Society, and learned about the island’s history with a guided tour of Pedro St. James.

From natural wonders to cultural treasures and warm Caribbean hospitality, the CHTA multi-destination media trip delivered an immersive showcase of the re-

gion’s remarkable diversity. The journalists experienced top-notch accommodations at partnering hotels, including Bay Gardens Beach Resort in St. Lucia, Excellence Oyster Bay in Jamaica, and Grand Cayman Marriott Resort in the Cayman Islands.

The journey was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Jamaica Tourist Board, Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association, Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association, Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., and the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, with flights provided by interCaribbean Airways and Cayman Airways.

Japan's tourism sector roars back, record spending signals post-Covid renaissance

Japan's tourism industry has staged a remarkable comeback, defying the shadows cast by the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to recent data released by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, inbound travel spending from foreign tourists soared to an unprecedented 5.3 trillion yen in 2023, marking a remarkable rebound from the pandemic-induced slump. The figures reveal a remarkable resilience in the sector, with 2023's spending surging by 10.2 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, despite the challenges posed by a weakening yen.

However, while the overall spending has skyrocketed, there's a notable shift in the spending behaviour of travellers. Despite the surge in overall spending, the average expenditure per traveller has dipped, dropping from 235,000 yen in 2022 to 213,000 yen in 2023.

This suggests that while more tourists are flocking to Japan, they're spending less individually. Delving into the specifics of spending patterns, a discernible

change emerges. Accommodation has emerged as the prime beneficiary, capturing a larger share of spending in 2023 compared to 2019, with a noticeable decline in spending on shopping. This shift underscores a change in priorities among travellers, indicating a move towards experiences over material possessions. When it comes to the countries contributing the most to this spending surge, Taiwan takes the lead with 14.8 percent, closely followed by China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau) at 14.3 percent, South Korea at 13.9 percent, and the United States at 11.4 percent.

Interestingly, the dominance of China in 2019 has waned, highlighting the lingering effects of the pandemic on outbound tourism from the region. The data paints a picture of a tourism sector on the rebound, with Japan emerging as a coveted destination once again.

As the world gradually emerges from the shadows of the pandemic, Japan's tourism industry stands as a beacon of resilience and recovery.

AIRPORTS AUTHORITY OF JAMAICA’S 50THANNIVERSARY

2024 is quite the momentous year for the AAJ (Airports Authority of Jamaica), as they celebrate their 50th anniversary of solid service to Jamaica, and its international and Diaspora partners.

The AAJ has invested heavily in building a world-class airport system in Jamaica, with improvements such as the electronic gate (EGATE) implementation, upgrading of check-in and passenger processing system, the impressive re-surfacing and Runway expansion at the Montego Bay International Airport (MBJ), the new imposing retail space (MBJ) and of course, the transformation to a new International Airport, the Ian Fleming international Airport (IFIA) in Boscobel, St Mary.

EGATE systems read identity information from a passenger's biometric passport (ePassports) or other smart ID cards and uses biometric identification technology such as fingerprint scanning, and facial (iris) recognition to verify the passenger's identity.

This means a lot when millions of tourists flock to Jamaica for a taste of its world-class tourism products and colorful, rhythmic cultural offerings.

Passengers now can be quickly processed through immigration and customs, so as not to delay their highly anticipated, hardearned vacations! Then on the outbound (return) flight from Montego Bay, passengers will be pleasantly impressed by a beautiful restaurant and retail area, from which our world-famous foods, coffee, rums, spices, and souvenirs may be purchased.

The Ian Fleming International airport (in Boscobel) saw its inaugural American Airlines flight from Maimi in February (2024).

Major stakeholders, officials, Tourism and Travel partners were

present to witness this historic, memorable and exciting eventits first international flight.

The excitement and stewardship of the Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) throughout Jamaica continues in earnest, with a yearlong agenda of participation and strategic sponsorships of key events and community outreach programs. The AAJ were major Sponsors of the 42nd Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Marketplace Trade Show in Montego Bay May 20th – 23rd, 2024. This was one of the CHTA’s most impactful Expo’s to be held at the Jamaica Conference Center in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The AAJ were also special sponsors of the 10th Jamaica Diaspora conference held at the Conference Center in Montego Bay in June 2024, where President Audley Deidrick gave a comprehensive address during the Governor General’s luncheon on the AAJ’s contribution to Jamaica. Among the other activities, the AAJ will be sponsoring Jamaica’s upcoming Independence Grand Gala, to be held at the National Stadium in Kingston, as well as their own Gala and Awards event later this year.

The AAJ has intentionally stepped up its profile during this commemorative year, and Jamaica will continue to feel its presence throughout 2024. The impact as well as the significance of the AAJ on Jamaica ’s economy and logistical construct cannot be overstated, with the increasing volumes of trade, export and of course the explosive numbers of Tourists and visitors to the island.

New museum to honour Juneteenth traditions

Juneteenth, America’s newest federal holiday, will soon have a museum commemorating June 19, 1865, the day more than a quarter of a million enslaved people living in Texas learned they were free.

The National Juneteenth Museum , currently under construction, is tentatively planned to open in Fort Worth, Texas, June 19, 2025. The museum will continue America’s tradition of honouring Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, with celebrations across the country that honor Black Americans’ contributions to society and resilience in overcoming a history of enslavement.

The museum’s target opening date comes four years after President Biden signed a law in 2021 making June 19 a federal holiday, and 160 years after news reached Texas that “all persons held as slaves” were free. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation January 1, 1863, at the height of the U.S. Civil War.

The proclamation was largely ignored in Texas until Union Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston June 19, 1865, with troops to deliver and enforce the federal order. As African Americans reconnected with loved ones separated by slavery, Juneteenth celebrations took hold, beginning in Texas in 1866. Texas recognized Juneteenth as a state holiday in 1980, and additional states followed in the coming years and decades. Juneteenth celebrations occur across the United States, with family reunions remaining a central feature, along with food, music and poetry. In 2022, celebrations in Atlanta included a parade and free concerts, while Inglewood, California, near Los Angeles, showcased live performances and a children’s art space.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington holds a community day to celebrate Juneteenth with history, stories and live jazz. And on June 10, Biden hosted a Juneteenth celebration at the White House featuring performers including Doug E. Fresh, Trombone Shorty, Gladys Knight and Roy Wood Jr. Opal Lee, 97, known as the ‘Grandmother of Juneteenth,’ has said she hopes people of all races will embrace the National Juneteenth Museum as a symbol of freedom. The 4,645-square-meter facility will serve as an epicentre of Juneteenth education, historical preservation and celebration.

“The museum will be a learning experience for all,” said museum board legacy member Dione Sims.

“We hope to help the nation and the world find themselves in the Juneteenth story.”

CTO mourning the passing of former chair Pamela Richards

The CTO (Caribbean Tourism Organization) is mourning the loss of Pamela Richards, former U.S. Virgin Islands Commissioner of Tourism and CTO Chair.

Richards passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to tourism and socioeconomic development in the Virgin Islands and the broader Caribbean. CTO Chair, and Minister of Tourism and Ports of the Cayman Islands, Kenneth Bryan, expressed his condolences, noting Richards' significant contributions.

"The U.S. Virgin Islands and the Caribbean have lost a tireless leader who championed the cause of the Virgin Islands and the broader Caribbean tourism industry," Bryan said. He praised Richards for her service, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment, which have left an indelible mark on the region.

During her tenure as CTO Chair from 2004 to 2006, Richards over-

saw significant initiatives, including the appointment of Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace as Secretary-General in 2005. She prioritized improving tourism data collection, expanding staff training and development, and fostering public-private sector cooperation through an MOU with the Caribbean Hotel Association. Her leadership also saw the enhancement of public relations activities and the development of a world-class membership site focused on best practices. Richards' impact was further felt when she led the U.S. Virgin Islands in hosting the CTO’s annual Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-28) in St. Thomas in October 2005, showcasing her commitment to advancing Caribbean tourism.

Chair Bryan extended his condolences to Richards’ family, friends, and the government and people of the Virgin Islands, honouring her legacy and contributions to the Caribbean tourism industry.

Finnish city gives out 10000 seed packets to encourage growing meadow plants

Pollinators are an important part of our ecosystem, and we need them for food production and overall plant reproduction.

The amount of pollinators has decreased dramatically in recent decades in Europe*. The Finnish city of Lahti has taken up the challenge of revitalizing pollinators with a campaign titled ‘Without Pollinators We Cannot Survive’.

By giving out seed packets, Lahti wants to encourage citizens to grow meadow plants in their yards, which would act as an important habitat and source of nutrition for pollinators. The give-aways started on World Environment Day, June 5th, at the Lahti market square.

“The packets include the seeds of Finnish meadow flowers, like white clover, yarrow and cornflower,” says Hanna Mattila, project manager of the city of Lahti’s ‘Nature-positive Life’ project. “The flowers were in part chosen because they are in bloom at different times, providing pollinators a steady source of nutrition throughout the summer months.

“With 10 000 seed packets, we

could get up to 50 000 square meters, or seven full soccer fields, of meadow. This amount would provide a tremendous boost to pollinators”.

The yard of Siiri Fagerlund in Lahti’s Kilpiäinen area is buzzing with pollinators. Fagerlund and her partner wanted to make their yard not only better for themselves, but also pollinators.

“We have always dreamed about a lush, idyllic yard straight from children’s books” Fagerlund explains. When you have nature in your own backyard, it becomes a kind of oasis”.

Fagerlund started landscaping by planting chives in planter boxes. The chives were enjoyed by both the human occupants as well as bumblebees.

Now she estimates that they have around 50 different plants in their yard. Good experiences have nurtured her passion for gardening, which is why Fagerlund likes Lahti’s initiative to give out seed packets”, she said.

“This kind of meadow flower seed packet is a really good starting point. Nature is all of our shared responsibility and

it’s worth it to give it a little help”.

The Finnish Environment Institute (Syke) is organizing a nation-wide pollinator weekend in Finland from June 15 to 16 where, during this time, Finns can report pollinator findings either on Syke’s website or the iNaturalist application. Lahti is also encouraging its citizens and employees to report their findings to Syke during this time.

Citizen reports are necessary to get an accurate picture of the city’s pollinator situation. Lahti’s pollinator-friendly year will have other actions as well.

The city will for example build design apartments for pollinators, install pollinator-friendly outdoor lighting and organize a ‘Night of the Pollinators’ to encourage citizens to turn off their unnecessary outdoor lighting.

“We want to show how many different things cities can do to help pollinators”, Mattila says, and hopes that Lahti can act as an inspiration for other cities.

FEMALE PILOT RETIRING AFTER 34 YEARS

Theresa Claiborne, who once made history as the first African American female pilot in the United States Air Force, is making history again as she retires from United Airlines after an impressive 34 years of service.

In 1982, Theresa became the first Black female pilot in the United States Air Force when she was commissioned as a second lieutenant. She served as a command pilot and instructor for the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker for 7 years and also served in the Reserves for 13 years, becoming a flight commander before getting

promoted to lieutenant colonel. In 1990, Theresa also joined United Airlines as a first officer, steadily climbing the ranks to captain. Completely transitioning to civilian aviation, she officially retired from the military in 2003, with over 3,000 military flight hours under her belt.

Alongside her aviation feats, she mentored aspiring Black women, co-founding Sisters of the Skies in 2016 with fellow pilots Christine Angel Hughes and Nia Wordlaw. The organization aims to foster diversity in aviation through workshops, mentorship, and scholarships.

Recognized for her achieve-

ments, Theresa was honoured with induction into the Organi zation of Black Aerospace Pro fessionals Hall of Fame in 2017.

“Oh, I guess maybe I did make an impact and that’s important because when you put your heart and soul into something and it turns out that people appreciat ed it and people listened and got something out of it, it makes it all the better,” she said.

Her final flight with United Airlines, spanning 34 years of service, took her from Lisbon, Portugal, to Newark Liberty In ternational Airport. Throughout her career, she logged an impres sive 23,000 flight hours.

As Jamaica moves to revamp its constitution ahead of removing Britain’s King Charles III as Head of State and become a republic, one of the changes supported by both Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Opposition Leader Mark Golding is that all dual Jamaican citizens, including those from the U.S., should be able to serve in the Jamaican parliament.

Under Section 39 of the current constitution, only citizens of Commonwealth countries can serve as long as they are at

Woman

who once catered a dinner for President Franklin D. Roosevelt turns 110-years-old

Meet Louise Thompson, an African American woman from Fairbanks, Alaska who was born in 1914 before World War I and once catered for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s family.

She recently celebrated her remarkable 110th birthday surrounded by loved ones. Throughout her life, Thompson has seen 19 U.S. presidents come and go.

One of her memorable moments was catering for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s family, where his son, Elliot, would often visit for her famous baked goods. Beyond her renowned baking skills, Thompson has been a pillar of support in her community.

Her daughter, Diane Leavy, recalls her active involvement in church activities, teaching Sunday School, and initiating exercise classes at the Senior Centre in Poughkeepsie. “My mom went

around, knocked on doors, and told them we needed to come do exercises,” Leavy said. “She said, we’re old but we’re not dead.” Thompson’s exercise classes not only kept seniors fit but also fostered enduring friendships.

But instead of expanding eligibility, the new recommendations from the Constitutional Reform Committee tabled in parliament on May 21 seem to narrow eligibility even further to Jamaican citizens only.

That could mean that, if they get enacted, even parliamentarians who now have dual Jamaican-Commonwealth citizenships, like Mr. Golding (pic), could be forced to renounce in order to maintain eligibility.

“AARON’S STORY IN VERSE

AARON’S STORY IN VERSE” Is an emotional roller coaster journey of our brave 8 year old son battle to conquer cancer in 1998. His story was featured on the BBC Children’s Hospital Series, after he was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer known as Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. His infectious personality and quest for knowledge came shining through on the screen for all the viewers to see.

After his passing on July 13th 1998, The Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the BBC was inundated with tributes from shocked viewers of all ages, UK wide. This included a 15 year old young lady from Brussels, Belgium, who fell in love with him after following his story, and believing he would survive. This young lady proved to be a huge legacy, and fast forward 26 years, that young lady and her family are now friends of Aaron’s family, having met them on several occasions at their family home in Birmingham. With the tributes came donations of over £1000, which was shared out between the hospital, cancer research and Edwards house (a home for parents of sick children, who lives far from the hospital).

Aaron’s father Denny wrote his eulogy in verses titled “Our Little Man Aaron”. The favourably comments from the mourners encouraged him to continue writing, and this became an obsession. From the depths of despair and a positive attitude, this book has emerged, with 38 story lines and 600 plus verses, covering the 9

months of his life, which helped him tremendously in coping with the greiving process.

This story in verses describes in detail the emotional roller coaster ride Aaron’s mother and father endured during this period, from the first sign that something was wrong, to the diagnosis, the treatment process, through to his passing and the after effects that they experienced after he passed away. It highlights the highs, lows, tears and laughter of Aaron’s journey in fighting this terrible disease. Denny and his wife Norma hope that this story will be inspirational to parents and give them the strength to cope in overcoming adversities in their lives.

Denny states, “Aaron had a thirst for knowledge, with his pencil and pad, he was always writing or asking questions, the instigator of many hilarious situations. Giving rise to nick names like “Mr Know it all” and “The Professor” he was writing to the end. His last written words were “enjoy, enjoy”, was a message for us, in the circumstances those words became so poignant”.

“During his time in hospital, said Denny, Aaron was more concerned for the other children than himself and loved to help them, so with this in mind the main purpose of this book is to support children”. The book is available on Amazon.com, some proceeds from the profit is currently supporting 2 charities since the launch in April, namely Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH) and Friends of Brandonhill (FOB) a local charity helping Children in the Caribbe-

Traditional religions still thriving in Africa

Africa is rich with a variety of traditional religions and spiritual belief systems.

However, during the colonial period missionaries spread Christianity throughout the continent and suppressed many of these pre-existing belief systems. Africans continued to follow their traditional belief, in smaller numbers than before, and these faiths still exist today.

In most African countries, traditional religion and spiritualism are advanced by old men and women. Younger African people, particularly women, have found these religions and spiritual belief systems can help them learn more about their heritage and forge their own identities apart from the colonial legacy of the continent.

Three practitioners of these belief systems, Amanda Gcabashe, a sangoma, or faith healer, urban mystic, Mildred Otieno (pic) and Orisha priestess Iyalorisa Omitonade Ifawemimoas, as well as Professor Jacob Olupona, of Havard University, a leading expert in African indigenous religion.

“We’ve been taught to hate our culture,” said Mildred.

The 37-year-old Kenyan is changing the narrative by us-

ing astrology and natural means such as dreams and visions, or artificial tools, like tarot cards and shells, to solve various problems for her clients. "I used some Christian teachings taken from the bible and tie them to spiritual teachings," she said.

"In case of medical issues, I refer them to good herbalists first and if they do not get well after going through the entire procedure, I will take up the case." Mildred mostly works virtually, with her clients drawn from all walks of life, include Buddhists, church leaders, influencers politicians, academicians and so on.

Legendary South African Anglican Bishop and Theologist, Desmond Tutu, once said: “When the missionaries came to Africa, they had the Bible and we had the land.”

“They said, ‘Let us pray’ and we close our eyes. When we opened them, we had the Bible, and they had the land.” A spiritualist, cardologer, historian, predictive astrologer, and researcher int the mystical realms, particularly African Traditional Religions (ATRs), following an 18 year spiritual journey, Mildred Otieno now uses her knowledge and gifts to guide, teach, and heal others.

'LET'S RESIST FORCES OF DIVISION, HATRED' SAYS MAHATMA GANDHI'S GRANDDAUGHTER

Hatred, animosity and violence are not part of any religious teachings and those who promote them in the name of religion are misinterpreting their faiths for mischievous reasons and should be shunned, Ela Gandhi, South African peace activist and Mahatma Gandhi's granddaughter, has said. Her remarks came as she responded to social media posts which claimed that the Gandhi Development and Phoenix Settlement Trust deliberately left out Hindu prayers at an interfaith meeting hosted at the Phoenix Settlement, which her grandfather started during his tenure in Durban. “All our faiths and our scriptures are there to guide us to be good, compas-

sionate and loving people,” Ela said.

“Hatred, animosity and violence are not part of our essential religious teachings. Those who promote the acts in the name of religion are misinterpreting their faiths for mischievous reasons and should be shunned,” Ela, who is the chairperson of the Gandhi Development and Phoenix Settlement Trust, said such moves were “an attempt to create division between the Hindu and Muslim communities and alienate Gandhiji and me from the Hindu community”. It is important to state the facts publicly so that the mischief that is being attempted can be stemmed right now, Ela said in an open letter in the weekly Post.

“To clarify, I personally invited

many Hindus individually and a number of Hindu faith leaders collectively, to recite a Hindu prayer at this function,” she said, citing invitations to four Hindu organisations which she said could not attend because of other commitments.

“The absence of some or other faith has happened at our interfaith prayer services in the past, never deliberately, but because of circumstances that have prevented a particular faith community from attending the particular function.

Importantly, to this day, in the 120 years of the existence of Phoenix Settlement, no one has ever accused us of deliberately leaving out a sect or engaging in “mass indoctrination”, as is alleged by the posting, she said.

CofE endowment fund worth £10.4billion

The Church Commissioners for England, which manages the Church of England’s endowment fund, delivered a 4.1% return in 2023, marking the fifteenth year of positive returns, with the fund valued at £10.4bn at the end of 2023.

“Managing the endowment fund in a way that generates sustainable funding to support the mission and ministry of the Church of England, now and for the long-term, is our core purpose – and 2023 was another successful year with that in mind,” said Alan Smith, First Church Estates Commissioner.

“In 2023, in addition to paying pensions of £120.6m, we made £223m in charitable expenditure, up 19.4% from £186.8m in 2022, with more than two-thirds of that going towards supporting dioceses and, through them, local churches.” The in-perpetuity endowment fund delivers long-term financial support for the Church’s ministry, contributing around 20% towards the total annual running costs of the Church of England.

The Church Commissioners has provided the Church with over £3.5bn in funding since 2009, with £1.2bn to be distributed during the current 2023-2025 triennium – a 30% increase on the previous triennium, thanks in large part to the excellent investment returns generated by the Commissioners’ Investment team. The fund has delivered positive returns while building a reputation as a global leader in responsible investment.

PROPERTY INVESTORS REMAINING BULLISH

- DESPITE LINGERING CHALLENGES

UK property investors are remaining optimistic for the year ahead, even in the face of persistent economic and regulatory challenges, research from Market Financial Solutions (MFS) has revealed. The specialist lender commissioned an independent survey of 2,000 UK adults, finding that 16% hold property investments, including buy-to-let (BTL) properties, holiday homes and commercial units.

Of those with property investments, over half (53%) said they are confident in the outlook for their investments, while only 14% are pessimistic. Yet investors also acknowledge that challenges remain. Less than two in five (38%) believe that it will be easier to manage their

property investments this year compared to last, while over half (56%) are worried about the UK economy entering a recession, which was confirmed earlier this month.

Meanwhile, of the investors surveyed who own BTL properties, 63% are worried about the amount and complexity of regulation, with 56% saying that increasing regulation is deterring them from investing in more BTL properties.

Paresh Raja (pic), CEO of Market Financial Solutions, said: “First and foremost, it’s notable that one in six UK adults holds some form of property investment, underlining the lasting appeal of bricks and mortar among retail and sophisticated investors alike. What’s more, we can clearly see that optimism far outweighs pes-

simism among property investors at present.

“Quite rightly, though, investors are evidently mindful of the challenges impacting their property portfolios. Concerns over the now-confirmed onset of a recession loom large, while escalating regulation – particularly in the BTL space – is another concern.

“It will be intriguing to see how the upcoming general election either eases or exacerbates these worries. As a lender, we know that people dislike uncertainty.

“So, greater clarity around the state of the economy and the future direction of housing and investment policy would undoubtedly help people better manage their investment strategies in the short, medium and long term.”

HOW TO TURN YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAY INTO A PERMANENT MOVE TO PORTUGAL

The luxurious Monte Santo resort, where Kronos Homes recently launched real estate sales, is showing how easy it can be to turn a summer holiday into a permanent move overseas.

With key-ready, fully furnished homes in a superb central Algarve location, the resort presents an attractive and accessible lifestyle for families seeking to relocate to a new life in the sun. Foreign interest in Portuguese property is strong.

Figures from Portugal’s 2022 Immigration, Borders and Asylum Report show that there were 45,218 Britons resident in Portugal, accounting for 5.8% of all foreign residents (and second only to Brazilians in terms of the number of foreigners calling Portugal home). That figure jumped 7.8% from the previous year.

Part of the attraction of moving to Portugal is how easy it can be. Foreigners can obtain a fiscal identification number and open a bank account with little difficulty and a handful of documents (proof

of income, proof of address, ID and so on), with English speakers making the move able to find visa, legal and tax advice readily available in their native tongue.

Those wishing to buy a property in Portugal should seek professional advice, just as they would in their home country. Many Portuguese banks will provide a loan for up to 80% of the property value for foreigners.

Visa advice is also important. The D7 visa is a popular choice for retirees, while the D2 can work well for entrepreneurs, freelancers and independent service providers. Immigrating with the correct visa can have significant tax implications, so consulting a specialist firm before applying is always a good approach.

Those living in Carvoeiro have all they need on their doorstep, from shops, restaurants and bars to healthcare services and a respected international school less than 15 minutes’ drive away. The huge Slide and Splash waterpark is also reachable in 15 minutes, while the local coastline provides

RIGHT TO BUY: 189,000 SOCIAL HOMES COULD BE LOST TO CONTROVERSIAL SCHEME BY 2040, RESEARCH WARNS

England’s dwindling social housing stock is poised to plummet by an additional 189,000 properties through the controversial Right to Buy scheme alone by 2040 – research by socio-economic experts at Marrons has revealed.

The latest figures show that 89,091 social rent properties owned by local authorities were sold through Right to Buy nationally between 2015/16 and 2022/23. If this continues at its current level, it will result in a loss of 189,318 social homes by 2040.

On the property front, the five-star Monte Santo resort in Carvoeiro presents a selection of homes, with both apartments and villas available to move straight into. The resort is also home to an impressive swimming pool, four smaller pools, a spa and wellness centre, a lovely children’s area, a clubhouse and a multi-sports court. The combination of key-ready fully furnished homes and superb on-site facilities means that buyers can take a ‘plug and play’ approach to moving to Portugal, cutting much of the stress out of the relocation process.

“Establishing a new life in the Portuguese sunshine shouldn’t be stressful,” says Alda Filipe, Real Estate Director, Kronos Homes. “That’s why Monte Santo offers the ideal relocation choice – we want our buyers to enjoy every moment of their new adventure from day one.”

ship statistics and mask deeper systemic issues.” By 2040, England’s 16+ population is expected to grow by 6% to almost 50 million people. Notably, Greater London and the East Midlands are the fastest-growing regions – each anticipating 12% growth to 8 million and 4.5 million, respectively – while the North East shows the slowest growth at 5% to reach 2.3 million people. To meet the burgeoning demand, at least 5.4 million homes need to be constructed across England by 2040. The South East leads the way in housing need outside of Greater London, with demand for more than 950,000 homes. In contrast, the North East demands the least, with a requirement of 112,388 properties.

Craig Pettit, planning director at Marrons, said: “It is extremely concerning that by 2040, at least 189,000 properties could be taken out of our country’s social housing stock – a harrowing forecast that comes in the wake of alarming surges in social housing waiting lists, with more than 1.2 million people being on their local authority housing register in 2023, and affordability remaining considerably worse than in the late-90s.

“The introduction of the Right to Buy scheme, which enabled council tenants to buy their homes for a significantly reduced price, was turbo-charged in 1980. It has the potential to falsify home owner-

Birmingham is the local authority area that is set to lose the greatest number of social homes through the scheme by 2040 (10,504), followed by Leeds (9,110), Sheffield (6,058), Leicester (5,895) and Nottingham (5,138). Sandwell (4,420), Hull (3,878), Wolverhampton (3,770), Barking and Dagenham (3,283), and Wigan (3,100) make up the remainder of the top 10.

Louise Drew, head of building communities at law firm Shakespeare Martineau, said: “Sadly, the Right to Buy system is open to abuse.

“Too many houses sold under the scheme end up back on the private rental market – undermining the core aim of the scheme, further exacerbating the housing crisis and driving up prices.” Utilising the latest ONS Census data (2021) and 2018-based population projections, Marrons has painted a clear picture of England’s housing need in 2040 in its latest report. Supplementing this is data from local authority housing registers, social housing stock records and extrapolated housing requirement figures using the government’s standard method.

MAN CITY STAR, SHAW, WINS WOMEN'S FOOTBALL AWARDS

Manchester City striker Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw had been recently named player of the year at the Women's Football Awards.

The 27-year-old Jamaica international won the Women's Super League Golden Boot with 21 goals in 18 games, eight goals clear of

anyone else despite her season ending early with a broken foot. She has also won the WSL and Football Writers' Association player of the season awards.

England boss Sarina Wiegman was named manager of the year at the awards, while Bayern Munich midfielder Georgia Stanway is the international player of the year.

Manchester United and England centre-back Maya le Tissier won the young player award.

Former England international and current TV pundit Alex Scott was named women's football broadcaster of the year. England keeper Mary Earps was given the World Cup hero award, with the retiring Manchester City captain Steph

Houghton named inspirational role model.

The awards, launched last year, are voted for by the public. "We are already planning our 2025 event - hopefully when our Lionesses return from the European Championship as champions once more," said ex-England international Eni Aluko at the London ceremony.

Does U.S.A. cricket growth impact the future in West Indies? – Columnist, Basil Springer, shares his views

From the mid-late 1970s to the early 1990s, the West Indies team was the strongest team in the world in both red-ball and white-ball cricket. However, this dominance has not been sustained, and at times, our performances have trended towards the depths of despair for cricket fans. This fluctuating performance can be attributed to several factors: financial investment, marketing approaches, infrastructure, pitch curators, operating logistics and coaching systems, all of which need improvements.

The United States, with its vast population and diverse immigrant communities, represents an untapped market for cricket.

The sport’s increasing popularity there, driven by the success of Major League Cricket (MLC), can substantially boost its global profile. This burgeoning interest can positively impact West Indies cricket in several ways.

First, the expansion of cricket in the U.S. can increase financial investment in the sport. The commercial potential of the U.S. market is enormous. As cricket gains traction, we can expect more sponsorship deals, broad-

cast rights agreements, and merchandise sales.

Second, the growth of cricket in the U.S. can provide players more opportunities to compete at a higher level. Establishing a professional league like MLC can serve as an additional platform for players to showcase their talents and can help bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket - thus foster a new generation of West Indies cricketers better equipped to compete on the world stage. However, there are also challenges to consider. The rise of cricket in the U.S. could lead to a talent drain, with young Caribbean cricketers potentially being lured by the financial incentives and lifestyle offered in the United States. This could weaken the talent pool available for West Indies cricket if not managed carefully. Moreover, the WICB (West Indies Cricket Board) must proactively engage with U.S. cricket authorities to ensure mutual benefits. Strategic partnerships, exchange programs, and joint ventures should be developed and nurtured to help both regions flourish without one overshadowing the other.

ATHLETES FACING HEAT RISKS IN PARIS - ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS SAY

Heat levels during the Paris Olympics could pose health risks for competitors, a report by environmental groups said, adding that continued increases in global temperatures could jeopardise future editions of the Games.

The report, titled "Rings of Fire: Heat Risks at the 2024 Paris Olympics", was published on Tuesday by the British Association for Sustainable Sport and Frontrunners, an organisation helping athletes engage in environmental issues. Temperatures are expected to soar again in the European summer, after setting records in 2023, with

French national weather agency

Meteo-France saying that conditions are likely to be warmer than normal.

Heat and humidity was also a major issue at the Tokyo Olympics, where athletes - even those wellused to training in hot climatesfound it extremely tough going.

"The next Olympics in Paris is now upon us, and notable cases of extreme heat undermining the health and enjoyment of sporting spectacles have only increased in the intervening years (since the Tokyo Olympics)," said the report, whose researchers spoke to both scientists and athletes.

"The fact that the Olympics will

take place during high summer means that the threat of a devastating hot spell is a very real one," it said.

The report, which looked at data from the past 100 years since the Games were hosted in France in 1924, found that temperatures had increased by 3.1 degrees celsius on average during the months of July and August - when the Olympics are traditionally held.

British men's rugby sevens player

Jamie Farndale warned of the dangers athletes could face due to the heat, adding: "What we do is push ourselves to our limits, and if we have to do so in conditions that are unsafe I don't think the athlete

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) told Reuters that among several countermeasures identified, one involved reviewing the competition schedule, which has been planned to avoid potential excessive heat.

"It is of great importance that organisers of summer sports events plan carefully to prevent heat-related illnesses," an IOC spokesperson said.

"For the Olympic Games, providing athletes and spectators with the best and safest conditions possible are top priorities for the IOC and the entire Olympic Movement."

SOLHEIM CUPS STAR, THOMPSON, TO RETIRE AT 29

Golfer, Lexi Thompson, has confirmed that she will retire at the end of the 2024 LPGA Tour season.

The 29-year-old has won 15 times since turning professional in 2010 and secured her only major title in the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship - now renamed the Chevron Championship. The American, who has represented her country in six Solheim Cups as well as two Olympic Games, became the youngest ever qualifier for the US Women's Open in 2007, when aged 12.

She also set an LPGA Tour record as its youngest winner when she claimed the Navistar LPGA Classic as a 16-year-old. Both records have since been broken.

In a statement on Instagram, Thompson said: "While it is never easy to say goodbye, it is indeed time.

"At the end of 2024, I will be stepping away from a full professional golf schedule. I’m excited to enjoy the remainder of the year

as there are still goals I want to accomplish.

“I'm looking forward to the next chapter of my life, time with family, friends, and my trusted companion, Leo. I will always look for ways to contribute to the sport and inspire the next generation of golfers."

Thompson's announcement comes just two days before her scheduled 18th appearance at the US Women’s Open. A permanent fixture in the top 10 of the world rankings between 2013-2022, Thompson is known for her aggressive and powerful style of play on the course and her graciousness towards fans off it.

LPGA tour commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan said: "Lexi's impact extends far beyond the golf course.

"Her remarkable career and the way she has conducted herself both on and off the course have inspired countless girls around the world to pursue their goals with passion and perseverance."

The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is working with world governing body Fiba to nurture female talent and grow the sport on the continent.

The BAL is in its fourth year as a men’s tournament, with the League’s president, Amadou Gallo Fall, says that work is already being done by his organisation to boost the women’s game.

“There is a women’s club championship that Fiba is running and we built the BAL on the foundation of club basketball that Fiba used to run,” he said.

THE BAL LOOKING TO BOOST WOMEN'S BASKETBALL IN AFRICA

“We contribute towards investment in growing the women’s game. The foundation is laid.”

A key challenge for Gallo Fall is to expand the female talent pool across the continent. Gallo add-

ed. “I know the women’s game is very popular in certain countries - Senegal, Mozambique, Egypt, Mali and Nigeria,” he said.

The BAL hopes to lay a strong foundation across the continent through its ‘BAL4HER’ project, which aims to advance gender equity and celebrate women in the sports industry.

The body ran a five-day camp for 20 top Under-23 women’s players from 14 African countries alongside the play-offs in Rwanda with the aim to empower and develop young female athletes on and off the court. “This is a way to continue to build capacity, make the industry accessible for women and especially help them grow on their journey to becoming the best basketball players they can be,” Gallo Fall said.

“They will be mentored by elite coaches and this will be an opportunity to talk to them about opportunities and careers in sport. They have a chance to learn more about the industry and the work the BAL is doing, and we want to continue to provide those mentorships.

The BAL has received financial backing from the NBA and Fiba, and Gallo Fall says the league must stand on its own two feet in the future. “We need to generate revenues and have to be able to sustain the league,” he said.

“We are investing heavily because we believe in the long-term outlook for the league but ultimately we want to get to a point where it is profitable.”
