he great and the good gathered for the Sturridge Foundation Gala Dinner, Dance and Achievement Award presentation evening, in the swanky 1874 Suite, at Aston Villa FC's Villa Park. Footballers, past and present, musicians, business people, family, friends, associates and general supporters were in great numbers to support the charity set-up by Liverpool and England striker, Daniel Sturridge, plus parents, father, Michael and mother, Grace.

Compered by renowned radio presenter and DJ, Bobo El Numero Uno the night was the perfect platform for all to know more of the Foundation, its goals, its achievements and future planning and developments. The Sturridge family was determined to get their message across to an attentive crowd, most of whom were familiar with them and their benevolent aspirations with it all taking place in the city of Daniel, and there, roots as well as the club where it all started, for the goal-scoring maestro – and, in-

In 2013 its very first event, anywhere, took place in the family’s original roots – Jamaica – with a family fun day, in Portmore, in St. Catherine. In Jamaica they also made indelible contributions to local hospitals, schools and other establishments by way of funding opportunities, gifts, or the Sturridge family’s very presence.

he 24th May saw the annual meeting of the Sandwell Council, where Councillor Julie Webb (Cradley Heath and Old Hill) was inaugurated as the new mayor of Sandwell, taking over from last years mayor, Councillor Barbara Price, appointing Oldbury Councillor Susan Downing as her new deputy mayor. Born in Tipton, this was a momentous occasion for the girl who grew up in humble beginnings as the eldest of 7, and who has always promoted Sandwell as a great place, telling The Phoenix; “During my time as mayor I will do everything in my power to promote Sandwell as a brilliant place to live, a great place to work, and with great people at its heart.” Her chosen charities for her tenure as mayor are Sandwell Parents of Disabled Children and Sandwell Carers. “I am so honoured to be appointed as Mayor.” Speaking with The Phoenix the day after their inauguration, the newly appointed Mayor and Deputy Mayor were still on a high from the events of the night before, but were concentrated on the task that now stands before them in their new roles. “Having known Julie for over 20 years, I think we are going to make a really great team working together as Mayor and Deputy” Cllr Downing stated. It’s a family affair at the top, with both Mayor and Deputy taking their daughters as their consorts for this term, with Susan’s daughter being one of, if not the youngest consort they have ever had at only 20! Both ladies reinforced their pride in Sandwell, and wish to raise and promote community spirit, which they feel has waned slightly in recent years. “People looked after each other,” mused Cllr Webb, “and we would like to go back to that feeling of community which we seem to sadly have come away from quite a lot.” As a community-centred person, having been elected onto the council in 2002, Cllr Webb had previously worked with setting up a tenant and residents association, and being a cub scout leader for 10 years. “The people of Sandwell are the salt of the earth, and Sandwell itself is one big melting pot and always has been, I think it’s great!” beamed Cllr Webb, “It’s amazing that each community has a slightly different dialect, even within the region! We are proud of our people, and the work that they do.” Discussing the promotion of the youth of Sandwell, especially in line with The Phoenix’s own mes-

But with women taking such high positions, and bringing our daughters as consorts too, there are role models for people to look at and realise that there are things to aim

for.” The duo are in office for 12 months, and the level of enthusiasm shown by the pair for their new roles, and the passion for Sandwell , and a full mayoral diary, the year ahead looks bright for the people of Sandwell.

l The Mayors chosen charities sage of ‘Inspiring a New Generation’, Cllr Downing stated “There is a lot of new activity initiatives being released in Sandwell now, you can get a card from the libraries, as well as a map, and record your steps and times as you’re walking around. It’s brilliant because it is encouraging people to get and stay active, and especially targeting the youth with the technology side of it.” “With the declaration we all signed last year as councillors, we are dedicated to supporting children and the youth of Sandwell into finding work up to the age of 25. xcept for the Independent online publication that alluded to Muhammad Ali’s life as a martyr towards the end, few commentators have analysed this important decipher of one of the world’s controversial but yet colourful sportsman. His movement towards martyrdom status was evident in the ring and outside of it. Martyrdom is usually associated with sacrilege, sanctity and all things pious. It also denotes acts of persecution, torment agony and other forms of torment. The beliefs of individuals and their reasons for such values could easily be distorted by a host of complex-laden concepts and conventions that don’t offer mirror the uniqueness of the human psyche. In every person, there is an element of martyrdom, a desire to accomplish, a passion to sacrifice for a purpose that is meaningful and a chance to take risks to achieve that almost elusive goal or objective. Such is the elemental nature of human beings. Unlike other sporting professionals of his generation, Ali epitomised a symbol of self-sacrifice etched with pomp, hilarity and self-adulation. The attention-seeking that he mastered or supposedly craved, masked the motive of a compelling desire to help, support and improve the lives of others affected by forms of injustice or other. Many of the boxers who fought him also enhanced their public persona while securing material trappings. Amid reverence and loathe, most of the fighters who challenged Ali were more interested in pugilistic prizes –high earnings and a reputation. Ali himself used boxing to sustain his campaign for justice and due recognition for people of colour

–in the USA and the world as a whole. His fights around the globe was a powerful reflection of his maytrdomic inclinations. If ever there was a man who was ‘master of his fate’, that man was Ali. For he exercised that fate as a means to an end; he articulated it and sealed it with his personal and professional life alike. To him boxing was more than a sport, it was a metaphor for honing justice, an instrument for welding societies, and a vehicle for transforming the human spirit. His success transcended the ‘Sweet Science’ (boxing). It also brought a level of partial respectability to the downtrodden and the oppressed. He was a signifier of triumph over travesty and indignation of the worst kind ever imagined in the 20th century. In fact, some of these epic battles are still being fought today despite the tirade of clichés and multiple platitudes. Ali’s martyrdom as a man and professional, was also typified by his relentless act of giving. Stories of him giving to noble causes –individually and collectively – are now legendary. His natural personality was also a stimulus for greed and exploitation by some who naturally benefitted from his box office earnings. Yet, there is no doubt that Ali’s martyrdom can have a transformative impact on men and women irrespective of their backgrounds. Throughout his life (even towards the end of it), he exemplified moral strength, the essence of nobility and unerring magnanimity. Indeed, very few sports have seen the likes of a symbolic talisman like Muhammad Ali. May his deeds remain truly immortal for succeeding generations in the global stratosphere and may his soul rest in peace.

espected multi-academy trust, the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership, which runs seven schools in Birmingham and North Warwickshire, has appointed a leading educational professional as its next chief executive. National leader of education, Richard Gill, joint headteacher of the outstanding Arthur Terry School, led a strong field of applicants from across the country, following an extensive interview process. He will take up his post on September 1. This is a key appointment for the region and the partnership’s learning community of 4,000 students and more than 800 staff and governors. Richard will oversee the next stage of the ATLP’s development and ensure it continues to deliver quality education to its seven primary and secondary schools, Teaching School and five children’s centres across Coleshill, Erdington and Four Oaks. Richard said: “I’m incredibly excited and proud about being given the opportunity to lead such a fantastic collaboration

that is the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership.” “I am fortunate to work alongside the most talented and professional headteachers you could meet; professionals who work tirelessly for the young people and families within their care and who are committed to ensuring that all of our young people are given the very best life chances.” The 43-year-old is also the newly elected Teaching Schools Council member for the West Midlands. He also represents Sutton Coldfield on the management board of the Birmingham Education Partnership (BEP). Richard will be headlining a conference in Worcestershire next month alongside national schools commissioner, Sir David Carter, and chair of the National College, Roger Pope. Richard will take over from

interim CEO Sally Taylor. His fellow NLE, Neil Warner, who is the strategic secondary lead for the ATLP, will become sole headteacher of the Arthur Terry School. Tim Sewell, chair of the ATLP Trust Board, said: “Richard has made a significant contribution to the development of our partnership over the past six years and he stands out as a dynamic leader who will move us forward. He is an authentic and experienced educator with a strong moral purpose, who respects the communities we serve and who values the ethos of teamwork across all our academies. This is an exciting time for the ATLP as we continue to build on our success and embrace new opportunities to ensure that every child from birth to 18 receives the very best education possible.”

I

t is not unusual to see the Queen, heads of State or religious leaders pay tribute to one of their national Icons on days such as Saint Patrick`s day, Saint George’s day and even the recent celebrations of Guru Nanak for the Sikh religion. The beauty of a garden is its variety of flowers that complement each other, each bringing something to the sight. Malcolm X`s day was 19/5/16, and the anniversary for the death of Marcus Garvey will be on the 10/6/16. In this part two of 'Do You Know Your History’ we will explore one of the most famous cultural, spiritual and political Icons in the war of resistance against colonial rule, Yaya Vita Kimpa. She is the great Saint venerated by the Congo (Kongo) nationalists. Vita kimpa was born in 1685 in the village called Songololo, in the town of Bakongo, at the time when the country was the Kingdom of Kongo Dia Ntotela, built by the descendants of the ancient Egyptians who left that region at its decline. During this period the Kingdom was occupied by the Portuguese, there was war between the kingdom and the Portuguese. At that time, the King Vita Kanga was killed, subsequently the Kingdom was split up into two kingdoms. The kingdom of Ndompetelo, and the Kingdom of Ndozuao. At this time Ancestral Spirituality was banned by the occupiers, who imposed their own religion, namely Christianity. This kingdom dated back to 320

A.D. and was the very kingdom that Yaya Vita Kimpa was unifying and rebuilding. She amalgamated her group with the already existing group of Mama Mafuta, who guarded the practices and teachings of the old kingdom. Yaya Vita Kimpa refused to denounce her spiritual and cultural heritage, for this she was targeted by the colonisers, who were aware that the only way to take control of the Kingdom, would be to eliminate all traces of the old kingdom, by destroying its languages and cultural practices. For this Mama Vita Kimpa, a fervent Kongo Nationalist was burnt alive, on the 2nd July 1706 she was put to death, by Catholic missionaries with support from the Portuguese army. Her family was later exiled to Haiti where they would be instrumental in the uprising of 1758, and later total independence led at the turn of the eighteenth century when Haiti became a republic. The first constitution in Haiti was drafted in KI-kongo, the language imported from the slaves kidnapped from Kongo Dia Ntotela. This was the great African kingdom before 1884/5 which saw

the Berlin conference divide Africa into the many countries that we see today. In 1705 the first slaves in Brazil were from Kongo Dia Ntotela. According to the testimony of Father Lorenzo Da Lucca, who travelled in the ship ’Nossa Senora Da Cabo’ carrying slaves to Bahia in Brazil in August 10, 1709. Many of the slaves wore symbols of Mama Kimpa Vita ( Bundu Dia Kongo), which had a profound influence in victories won against the colonisers, whether in Kongo, Brazil, North America or Haiti. In Quilombo dos Palmares, Quilombo comes from the Ki-Kongo word meaning villages, effectively being Independent communities of Blacks founded by the Kongo people. Brazil were the first victories won, it is well documented that 90% of the slaves came from the port of Soyo or Kabinda, Angola, which would have been the Kingdom of Kongo Dia Ntotela’s, capital Mbanza Kongo. The leader of the revolt, Ganga Zumbi is also revealed by his name, Ganga meaning a type of ‘Specialist’ and Zumbi is the equivalent to ‘forest, meaning he who has knowledge of the forest or nature. Just as Francios Makandal of Haiti and Sister Nanny of Jamaica had an extensive knowledge of herbs. Celebrations for Yaya Vita Kimpa day (2nd July) will take place in Congo, The Caribbean, various parts of Europe: Belgium, France, Sweden, Germany, here in the U.K and Canada. Ingeta, ibobo ibobo.

P

ainting and Decorating staff at Walsall College have been brushing up on their industry skills and learning how to use a revolutionary new dust-free sanding machine, which is quickly becoming the standard machinery used on construction sites and large scale projects. The college recently received the DEROS (Direct Electric Random Orbital Sander) system from Mirka, a world leader in innovative abrasive technology. The tool is the world’s lightest electric sanding machine in its class and

the first to use a brushless motor and no external power supply. Combined with a dust extraction system, it ensures a cleaner work environment, better control over the job and a higher quality finish, and for many construction firms in the sector, it is their preferred product to use on sites. College staff have received training from Mirka specialist, Chris Brook, on how to use and maintain the piece of machinery, and from September the lecturers will be ensuring all Painting and Decorating students and apprentices gain the skills required to use the equipment effectively.

Dr Yvonne Thompson; What makes the woman?

D

r Yvonne Thompson is a renowned International Woman born in Guyana, with five siblings. Her childhood was fairly average- not rich and not poor. What monetary riches she and her siblings did not have, was made up for by a wonderful father and according to her; the best mother anyone could ask for. Dr Thompson has been educated to University level and has been involved in many successful firsts in the UK including, being

Music Editor for the UK's first Black Monthly glossy magazine – Root; starting the first Black Owned PR Company (according to PR Week), now known as ASAP Communications and starting the UK's first Black Women Business Network - The European Federation of Black Women Business Owners. Dr Thompson stands for equality and diversity, especially in the workplace with a particular focus on women on boards. Dr Thompson has 20+ years’ experience for which she is well known on public sector boards, which includes, Chairing:- the London Central Learning and Skills Council, DTI's Ethnic Minority Business Forum, African Caribbean Business Network, and many others. She is often called upon for media interviews, on issues concerning small business, women and minorities. Having made her mark in the UK she was awarded a CBE (Commander Of The British Empire) in the Queen’s Birthday Honour List in 2003 for her services to women, small business and minorities. In 2005 she was awarded an honorary doctorate by London Metropolitan University for services to small business, and mass communications. She has been recognised across the UK and Europe as well as internationally, having been acknowledged by the Mayor of Houston Texas, with an Yvonne Thompson Day (4th January) as well as being named in Washington in the Congressional Records. Dr Thompson is currently spending most of her time promoting her recently published book: 7 Traits Of Highly Successful Women On Boards, public speaking and training. She was inspired to write her book because of her own experience of being on boards. The important things in Dr Thompson’s life are: family, health and love underpinned by her core values of fairness, honesty, generosity, and willingness. With great ebullience she com-

l Dr Yvonne Thompson ments on the accomplishments that have given her the most personal fulfilment. They are the relationships with her mother, her daughter and grand children, her partner, friends and acquaints. She has kept herself young and beautiful with daily practices that keeps her motivation high such as: Clarity of thought, waking up in a good mood, waking up before everyone else, keeping busy, using every minute wisely going to bed late! So what does success feel like for Dr Thompson in her life and business? In her business it is about making enough money so that she can give some away to help others and still live comfortably. Other accomplishments Dr Thompson would like in the future is to set up a charitable foundation that specifically caters to young women’s education globally. When asked, what do people most admire about you? She reports, “Tenacity I think – but you’d really have to ask them!”

So for a life well lived and outstanding achievements and accomplishments, if at the end of life Dr Thompson were looking back, the events she wished had never happen are the wish that her parents has lived a bit longer. On looking back, the event or events she wished she could have skip are not many, she has applied her learning to similar situations, so that she does not get bitten in the same place twice, or by the same bug twice. Dr Thompson has learnt - patience, humility, strength, and when to say No. She states that the new generation is very important to her for they are the new guardians of the globe, and her children and children’s children are part of that. Dr Thompson’s advice to someone wishing to start out is to learn as early as possible what your focus is, and focus on that. “Be determined and patient. Be generous whenever you can. Seek the help of those that have done it before – you. This will save you time, money and frustration. Take care of the planet.”

Boosting SME Competitiveness among Commonwealth States

A

lthough the recession is ostensibly over according to conservative estimates, developing economies in the Commonwealth remain sluggish. Yet, these countries are expected to grow at a combined rate of 4.1% compared to 1.8% in the EU and 2.6% in the US. The in-and-out EU Referendum is a litmus test for the political and economic sovereignty of the UK, but it is also indicative of Britain to refocus attention on supporting SME growth in the 53 independent Commonwealth countries. The aim is to create competitive advantage for the 2.2 billion citizens, 60% of whom are under the age of 30. Supporting entrepreneurship particularly in rural economies, can result in reducing large-scale [material] poverty and exclusion which tends to feed the migration spectre and extremism among ‘at risk’ groups. Post colonialists assert trade aid as a means of ‘budgetary or subvention’ support to governments with poor trade deficits. But the biblical adage, ‘Teach a man to fish and he will never go hungry’ is very applicable in broader economic and social terms in this century. Doing the opposite is to reinforce dependency in emerging democratic states in the Commonwealth. Once part of the British Empire, Commonwealth territories became primary-producer colonies of the ‘Mother Country’. Having a raw material status meant that very few developed an industrial strategy to sustain their respective economies. More than 50 years on, political independence has not been a panacea for economic democracy and in fact, the unevenness of economies have become more pronounced in recent times. Whilst the Commonwealth is home to multiple languages and dialects, English, the world business language, is the official or mother tongue of all Commonwealth member-states. Accordingly therefore, Britain

can use its leverage and vast experience of inter-continental trade to add fillip to the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector in Commonwealth states. Firms are constantly experiencing micro and macro challenges such as:• Inability to manage complex regulations designed for large companies/corporates. • Tendering opportunities are perceived unfair or inflexible for under-resourced firms. • Information on key industry sector performance is limited or non-existent. • Rural data is hard to obtain where transportation may be prohibitive. • Few dedicated enterprise agencies to support female and youthled businesses exist. • The absence of a comprehensive industrial policy to facilitate SME development. • Consistent national growth strategies for economic and social advancement. At the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers Meeting in November 2015, there was consensus to use the institution’s Trade Initiative as ‘on line platform to connect businesses across the Commonwealth and facilitate greater intra-Commonwealth trade and investment’. Nevertheless, if modern-nation states are to remain sustainable, their economies must have at least relative competitive advantage rather than be subjected to the whims of an unfair, global iniquitous trading system. Appreciable growth spurts in key (industry) sectors such as agriculture, construction, creative industries, education, healthcare, manufacturing (including light production) as well as transport and logistics, augur well for progressing Commonwealth states’ economic agenda. Britain’s support towards SMEs will assist in reshaping the future of global trade for universal growth, let alone, a movement towards economic parity or equivalence. Perhaps it is also useful to note these compelling indicators within the broader Commonwealth

Group that give fresh impetus to Britain’s pre-eminent role in this entrepreneurial frontier:• By 2020, about 40% of the global workforce will be in the Commonwealth, adding a further projected 800 million people to the labour market. • The Commonwealth has a gross domestic product (GDP) of US$9.6 trillion with 1 billion middle class consumers. The latter will rise faster than any other grouping. • “Africa’s economic performance over the past 15 years has improved considerably with GDP averaging 5% annually (OECD, December 2015). • Small firms “matter because they account for around 95% of all businesses and 60%-70% of all jobs. If they tap into the gains from trade, the benefits are spread more equitably across society” (CARICOM, April 2016). • “The economies of Southeast Asia are among the most dynamic and rapidly growing in the global economy” (University of Wollongong, October 2015). By encouraging partnership arrangements, maximising procurement and tendering opportunities, Britain can indeed be the ‘strategic lever’ for viable trade and other business activities involving SMEs and their larger corporate peers across the Commonwealth. Let the wheel be put in motion before it’s too late!

riels First Press Vintage, the craft cider produced by Aston Manor, has been awarded a gold medal – the highest award – at a prestigious industry competition. Recognised for its authentic, great taste, Friels First Press Vintage, scooped the prize at the International Cider Challenge 2016, where hundreds of ciders from around the world are tasted blind by an expert panel of judges. Benchmarked against other ciders entered into the competition, medals were given to individual products that have been selected for their flavour, aroma and appearance by the judges. The cider maker’s flagship brand, Kingstone Press, added another two medals to its name after scooping bronze for both King-

stone Press Wild Berry and Kingstone Press Classic Apple. Sales and Marketing director, Glen Friel, said: “We are thrilled about the results from the International Cider Challenge – it’s fantastic to see Friels being awarded the top accolade in its debut year. We’ve won more medals at the International Cider Challenge this year than we’ve ever won previously in a single competition – a brilliant achievement. From our mainstream brands like Crumpton Oaks through to our premium ciders Friels and Knights, our ciders are consistently being awarded for the great taste they deliver for discerning drinkers.” Gordon Johncox, managing director, added: “This competition is rather special as it celebrates only the best tasting ciders. Our brands are judged against many leading contenders so to have won so many medals, especially gold, shows the high standard and exceptional drinks produced by our dedicated and skilled team. We are very proud of them.”

rom way back in 1970, when Councillor Peter Douglas Osborn first met the great Jazz Saxophonist legend that is Andy Hamilton, there has been an admiration for what Andy did, and for what he stood for. Working together as Youth Leaders in Sparkbrook, from the Farm Centre on Farm Road to the Claremont Centre, Peter saw Andy turn around the lives of many a youth, through music and mentorship, famously once

f music is the food of love, then this award winning female saxophonist, label owner, songwriter, wife and mother of two has the perfect recipe. Millicent Stephenson has been playing the saxophone for over 30 years and was tutored by the late

great Andy Hamilton (MBE) in her youth. Andy invited her to join his Blue Pearls Band. Millicent praises Andy’s influence in her life saying: “…Andy saw something in me as a young player and encouraged me to make more of my ability. His confidence in me was quite overwhelming in a way and I felt under the spotlight which is not really where I wanted to be at that time. Over the years I understood what he meant. Andy is still a major part of the musician I am today”. Now she is shining that same light on others having launched a networking event to encourage and empower female musicians and women who have put their instruments aside to concentrate on motherhood, careers, and daily life. Millicent says “women need more help in the music business because they have more obstacles to overcome than their male counterparts which is why I set up ‘Cafemnee’. Millicent’s ‘Not just Jazz’ show at the Crescent Theatre, 8th July 2016 is bigger and better than previous years which are normally sold out shows. saying “If you have the music in you, then I have the time.” “Andy redeemed a lot of adolescents, literally saving them from going down the wrong path, stating ‘Music is the key!’” reminisced Councillor Osborn, “He really was a cut above most other people.” This is why Councillor Osborn is spearheading a campaign to immortalise Birmingham’s adopted son as part of the Paradise redevelopment, on the site of the old Birmingham Conservatoire. “What could be a more fitting

tribute for such a well respected, talented and inspirational man?” Councillor Osborn has successfully planned and delivered a statue previously as part of his role as the Chairman of the Birmingham City Planning Committee, in that case of Cardinal Newman, which was blessed by Pope Benedict XVI during his visit to the city in 2010 coinciding with the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman at the service in Cofton Park. After the sad news of Hamilton passing in June 2012, Osborn had the idea that the man who dedicated 60 years of his life to helping the youth in Birmingham, as well as being a world-renowned and extremely talented jazz musician, should be immortalised in the city that he called home. After receiving blessing from Hamilton’s family to proceed, Osborn set to work on how, where and when. “As part of the Paradise redevelopment, there is a commitment to creating and

funding public art,” explained Osborn, “and as the site encompasses what was the Conservatoire, we can’t think of a better location.” “As we approach the 4th anniversary of his death, and public support is getting behind the campaign, we are hoping that by the 10th anniversary in 2022, we will have the memorial in place. We would love to see a statue of Andy doing what he loved, playing the saxophone, continuing to inspire people, as he did his whole life.” Fellow Councillor Martin Straker-Welds has pledged his support to the campaign, with local historian and media personality Carl Chinn also on board. “With the overwhelming public support we have been receiving, I really do feel that this is a memorial that is deserved and feasible,” enthused Peter, “Andy was a Son of the City, and this is the perfect tribute.”

ecognition of the spending power of disabled people and their families - the 'purple pound' - is growing. Sainsbury's recently rolled out trolleys designed specifically for children with disabilities in stores across the country. RBS and NatWest have invested in hi-tech, fully accessible mobile branch vans that can be used by customers with mobility restrictions who are unable to make it into a bank branch. EE are just one of many organisations that now offer a video relay service for customers who use British Sign Language as their first language. But there is still a long way to go; with research showing that two-thirds of disabled people think most products aren’t developed with them in mind, whilst three in four have left a business because of poor customer service or disability awareness. The Extra Costs Commission – an independent inquiry that was set up in response to research that showed life costs more if you are disabled – looked

closely at how businesses can meet the needs of disabled people. Acknowledging the undeniable power of the ‘purple pound,’ Business Disability Forum (BDF) has added a new award category to its Disability-smart Awards scheme. The new 'Extra Costs Award' will recognise businesses that proactively work toward driving down the extra costs commonly faced by consumers with disability. Launched in collaboration with the Extra Costs Commission and supported by leading disability charity Scope, the Extra Costs Award will be given to those businesses that have accounted for and made a concerted effort to fulfil the following criteria: • Taken steps to develop a product or service that is geared towards reducing extra costs for disabled people and their families; • Introduced this product or service in the last year. The winner of the new Extra Costs Award will be announced at the 2016 Disability-smart Awards presentation in October 2016.

LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE

The Phoenix – June 2016 IN REMEMBRANCE OF

MUHAMMAD ALI

Leadership Excellence

with Dr Neslyn Watson-Druée CBE FCGLI FRCN

T

his month’s column on Leadership excellence is focused on Communication. Communication is a creative act and is central to leadership excellence. To set the context for the column: • What does the word communication mean to you? • How might you strengthen your communication? • How do you communicate so that your language is not merely a bridge or a response and instead your communication brings your world into being? The process of communication is dynamic. Clear, precise, congruent and focused communication gives you access to inventing, relating, accomplishing goals, speaking and listening. Central to communication is the act of connection, being interested in the other rather than you being interesting. When you connect and share with the other you bring about interchange of thoughts, opinions or information. Effective communication is base of all relationship building. A great leader and a master communicator not only have the mastery over the functional skills of communication but also mastery of personal qualities such as interpersonal communication that involves interaction between persons. An effective communicator always adapts to global audiences. Leadership excellence requires you master the art of communication. So how do you communicate so that your communication: • Is felt to have impact, effectiveness and grace? • Comes naturally and you are able to elicit effective communication from others? • Demonstrates that you take responsibility for the outcomes

of the communication rather than blaming and complaining about others? • Reaches new levels of impact, effectiveness and peace of mind? • You experience being heard and hearing others beyond what is said, I a way that each is truly known to the other? • Becomes a key to inventing, relating, and accomplishing your goals and your speaking and listening takes on unexpected power and potency?

The quality of your communication has an impact on your life?

The quality of your communication equals the quality of your life and when your communication is congruent, clear, conscious and committed your

communication becomes real in such ways that your communication generate possibilities, design opportunities and move your commitments to fulfillment, in that space you have access to your power and the ability to create desirable outcomes as a result of your communication. In other words your speaking and listening take on an unexpected power and potency.

Your listening host the depth, breadth and impact of the communication.

Attending to what is being said or heard strengthens your listening to the other.

What is your definition of listening?

Listening is the active and

dynamic process of attending, perceiving, interpreting, remembering and responding to the expressed (verbal and non-verbal) needs, concerns and information offered by other human beings. - Michael Purdy, Listening in Everyday Life

From your knowing what gets in the way of you listening wholly and completely?

Most people to whom we talk do not want to listen, usually because: • They think they have something better to say • They already have the answer to what they know to be the problem • They have no reason or motive to listen • They do not like us or what we represent or what we have

to say • They comprehend more quickly than we can speak • They are filtering the message • They are thinking about what they are going to say next • Talking is ‘action’ listening is ‘inactive’ (Assumption good managers take action) • They are distracted or they have more immediate problems Occasionally, some listening occurs, usually because: • The speaker is liked or admired • The speaker has something to say • There are rewards or punishment involved • A response might be expected

• The speaker might say something which can be used later • There are no other distractions • The listener is consciously trying to listen Over the years I have gained powerful distinctions in communication from Landmark World Wide; two of such distinctions are: 1. Automatic recurring dialogue – that is the dialogue that comes into your head, what you are constantly saying to yourself or the conversation that you recurrently repeat to yourself. 2. Morass – swamp – That is when one thought reminds you of another and then another and you enter deep into the emotion of the thoughts So excellence in communication begins with you having better communication with yourself and with that asking yourself better questions and more optimal questions within the communication you are having with yourself. I invite you to listen to yourself and to others: • Listen to what is being said • Listen to the communication you are having with yourself? • Is your communication with yourself empowering? • What is your communication with yourself creating? • Is your communication with others empowering? • What are you creating in your dialogue with others? • What is your automatic recurring dialogue?

What are you constantly saying to yourself?

Whatever you are saying to yourself is exactly what you are creating. Your thoughts and your words have power to create. You have access to your power through your communication with yourself and with others. • Listen to how the communication is delivered - in other word - to how something is said? Understanding how to practice good communication in your business, your day-to-day life, among friends, family, and significant others, is important for a number of reasons. Good communication fosters good self-esteem, maximize productivity, improving relationships, being an even better leader and even becoming a better speaker. What is a fundamental hallmark of great leaders in regard to how they inspire people through their communication? At this point I will share with you five fundamental communication practice of great leaders. • They mind what they say, they only say what is necessary, they are congruent with what they say - their actions align with

their words. • They make the complex simple. We are in an information age when people are bombarded with information and hence simplicity never been more powerful or necessary. Great leaders distill complex thoughts and strategies into simple, memorable terms that people can grasp and act upon. • Great leaders speak with their o w n voice - it is essential that

you find y o u r own voice, it is about your authenticity - You may wish to follow-up this aspect in my book, Authentic Choice: Be You. Great leaders use language that is distinctly their own. So the insight for you is to let your values come through your communication, another person’s voice may be more eloquent and it is not your own. People want you to be real and they respect you when you are real. • Great leaders are visible. Visibility is about engaging with people and your stakeholders so that they get a feel of who you are and what you care about. Theodore Roosevelt Quote is pertinent here. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. I want you to really get this: Although e-communication serves a valuable purpose, it is

no substitute for dialogue voiceto-voice communication and face-to-face communication. • Great leaders listen with their eyes as well as their ears. They practice the habit of stop, look and listen. They know that effective communication is a two way process and they know how to ask engaging questions and then listen with their eyes and ears. In this regard the insight is that it is easy to be very focused on getting your message out, or persuading and influencing others and you miss tuning into what you see and hear. You need to read between the lines, listen to what is being said as well as what is not being said. Listen for the question that is not being asked. Listen and hear what is coming back to you. Look for the non-verbal cues. Sometimes a person’s body language will tell you all you need to know. It is well reported in psychology and communication literature that nonverbal cues and language accounts for 55% of our communication message, tone of voice - how we say the words accounts for 38% of the communication message and words - what is actually said accounts for 7% of the communication message. he music element of arguably Birminghams largest festival was what you would say quite remarkable. Birmingham Pride really does spare no expense in bringing quality entertainment of the biggest stars of today and tomorrow. The 2 day festival saw over 30 thousand supporters of the movement party and celebrate from day until the early hours. So twenty years of Birmingham Pride we saw in 2016 with stars Lisa Stansfield, Tulisa, Liberty X, Katy B, Marvin of JLS and many oth-

ers showing their support for rights of freedom. Street Cred and Swish team were representing the after parties Saturday and Sunday at the RSVP Bar lounge and tent which was rocking with the best house djs including our very own Mark Dwayne playing R&B and the best of Urban. As you can see by the photos this year was a groundbreaking attendance and loved by all.

ince as far back as she can remember, Reena has always wanted to perform to show her skills and make others happy. She was lucky being blessed with a voice and a desire to express herself through the language of music. When she performs she feels alive and happy and happy that others share this feeling as well as also likes to sing for herself when she is alone and that too makes her happy. It has been her desire for years to also express herself in words. The written word ‘Sharing my life experiences and showing other women that they too can

Her vehicle of change has been her voice and the songs of Ladies Sangeet (Songs). l Jagruti Duggal Reena is passionate that this art It is about time the form continues “as it has given women come forward me so much joy over the years. and 1Nation Media has I am however, saddened that the put together the first of old ways seem to be vanishing many for women only. and could be lost forever to future generations.” 1Nation@thephoenixnewspaper.com It was this thought alone that made Reena decide to take steps to outline in written form the history, the styles and the words and music of Ladies Sangeet. It is true to say that her biography takes up the first part of the book but feels this is important for 2 reasons. Eminence began running children’s' dance classes in a small room in a Tividale gym before being presented with the opportunity to work with the Sandwell Leisure Trust teaching classes in their new branch; Portway Lifestyle Centre. Since starting there in October 2013 the girls and their group have grown from strength to strength and now offer dance classes weekly at Portway Lifestyle Centre and Wednesbury Leisure Centre for ages 1 to adult. They have had fantastic opportunities through our dancing careers including performing in prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Her Majestys Theatre, Disneyland Paris, the Molineux and St Andrews football sta-

erina Laleriya The daughter of the legend singer within Bollywood and Bhangra Taz Stereonation, also known by people as Shenay from a young age which started by her grandad. Her full Stage name is Shenay Laila She was born and brought up in Coventry, a small city in the West Midlands and is currently studying Fashion Business and Promotion at Birmingham City University. University was not her first option, she originally wanted to take out a gap year after ‘A’ levels to work on her mixtape to see what opportunities she could find, however her parents really wanted her to go university and is now finishing her second year. She has no regrets going to university but sometimes feels like she has wasted time, where she could of been working towards her real goals and dreams. In her spare time, Serina is always either singing, writing lyrics, doing something creative like designing art pieces on adobe as well as modelling. Her future career plans are

Young Asian Talent to set Singing Career

S

to make music and travel the world, initially she wanted to become a recording artist and would definitely consider herself to be known as an RnB artist. She is into her hip hop, RnB, soul and trap music. She has many influences including Billie Holiday, Tupac, Destiny’s Child and Biggie. At this time of moment she really enjoys having the freedom of being unsigned and making music which she is truly passionate about. Her dream would be to hopefully be signed onto a label like universal republic or Sony. Besides her music, she would love to also get into property development and open up my own business, whether that is in clothing or maybe even a restaurant. My first Interest in singing stemmed from a young age. When she was 6 years old she would always be singing and dancing. From a young age she would always be a part of drama productions and all the after school music clubs. After having her dad being in the industry made an impact as she and her sister were always exposed to different music and we would always go down to the

studio to see what events were taking place. Serinas’ first performance was at her father’s album launch when she was 15 years old and sang Alicia Keys “Newyork”. She was so nervous particularly because it was the first time some of her family members were watching her perform. Her role model would definitely be her mother. She has taught her wrong from right and has been through so much. She has taught her how to stand on her own two feet and become an independent young woman ‘I love her very much and she has always been supportive of my goals and aspirations’. Serina feels the music industry has changed her in many ways since she was a child. “Especially with young women it is definitely a lot harder for us to stand out from the crowd.” The industry has become more commercialised and sexualised. She does not feel people really appreciate real music anymore, everything is more commercial. Artists are always releasing singles here and there and not really working on a full body of music, albums are not as appreciated as much anymore and it is harder for artists to release their own material without other opinions changing the piece of work. Having her father being in the industry most of his life, he has seen the ups and downs of what comes along with being a music artist. It is definitely not an easy

platform and you never know what can happen. ‘He has definitely taught me a lot and I guess I’m lucky in that aspect because when he was younger it was a lot harder for him to tell his family that he wanted to do music, coming from an Asian background both my parents are supportive with what I want to do however my extended family most likely wouldn’t be keen as they have seen the struggles that come aside the industry’. This does not scare her as she feels in life there are struggles in no matter what you do, if you are able to rise above them and learn from mistakes it only makes you a stronger person. She believes in live you should do what makes you happy and forget about what others think. It’s a lot harder being a young Asian girl trying to make it in the industry, she does not want to go into the Asian music industry as it is not the kind of artist she would want to become and sometimes feels under pressure because of her dad, however it only motivates me to achieve bigger and better. Currently she is finishing her second year of university in Birmingham, and is excited for the summer to begin as she will be working on her mixtape and visuals. She just wants the process to be very natural,

to find producers who she will really connect with and make good music with. Next summer she is looking to go and work with a few producers in California the Bay area, which is super dope.

Serina does not have a set plan, however she definitely will want to release a lot of music and show people what she is capable of. She would want her music to be very true to who she is and would like her music to represent her.

here is no stopping the Queen B of Pop & R&B! The female icon is continuously setting the standards so high that it will take one hell of a female artist of this generation to top what she has done. Can we see any other lady taking the place of Mrs Carter any time soon? I think not. From when you’re apparently generating $150 million just off a rumour where her husband was meant to have slept with UK lookalike Rita Ora then you know that Beyonce is not just about the show she is about business. Having a husband like Jay Z would automatically make you a hustler and that is what she is doing right now, milking every penny she can make of her career. The new album Lemonade is all about her hubby cheating on her and she makes remarks that one day she will leave. Well, we have heard this before but never on this scale. Whether Jay has cheated or not this publicity stunt maybe has generated cash into his pockets also after all he is Beyonce’s husband so he could never lose financially at this stage. We have never really seen Beyonce do pub-

licity stunts to sell her records, its usually the good girl image and her looks that has put her at the top of her game but recently Beyonce has been crowned queen of the tabloids and at the foreforont of anything cutting edge, being talked about having beef with Rihanna or she being against police brutality. You would never expect to read about Beyonce supportng Black Panther movements, that would be a 2Pac story more like. So now we have a dangerous Beyonce, not that shy timid girl from Destinys Child all of those years back. Welcome to Sasha Fierce baby, what is next? Oh we may have the official Jay and Bey Split! That would be an event and could even be a movie!

ave you bought the Beats By Dr. Dre Beats Pill+ thinking it was going to be your ultimate portable Bluetooth speaker with some thump to it? Then you took it home and discovered the only bump that was made was a hit to your wallet and not in the sound department? Sorry, try this. The JBL Xtreme is what the Beats Pill+ should have been. This is a nice indoor/outdoor portable speaker with a boomier, bassier sound that can get 5 hours of playing time on max volume. Possibly you can get 10+ hours on a medium volume

setting. The battery is rechargeable. Some of its special features include the ability to pair two of these units together wirelessly for true stereo sound. On the back you got two dual USB charge outs which you can charge two phones with while listening to music. The device is splash proof meaning it can survive out in the rain. You can even run it under tap water to clean it but just don’t submerge it. Lastly it has a speakerphone built in which I did test. Calls are clear on both ends. This is one of the better speakers available.

SPECIAL CHARITY REPORT

Continued from Front Page

In Daniel’s enforced absence from the Gala – he was, at the time, on international duty as England were preparing for the European Championship in France – remaining family members played their part in highlighting the fantastic work the Foundation is carrying out, both in Jamaica and herein the UK. As testimony to its ethos, singing star, Jah Son, one of the stars on the Sturr Class Entertainment record label, was on hand. "One thing Sturr Class Entertainment isn't going to do is sign artistes just for the sake of signing.” “They are dealing with one act at a time and I am proud to represent the Sturridge Foundation as I am a product of it." Sturr Class Entertainment is part of the Sturridge Foundation whose primary goal is to uplift impoverished youth through sports and entertainment.

Established in 2014, it provides a platform for young players to achieve their aspirations of becoming successful footballers; with an emphasis stacked heavily on education. “Aside from football, we believe that education plays a vital part in the development of each player,” said Academy CEO, Cleveland Clarke. “That’s why we created these opportunities and pathways for

players upon graduation. Whether as an athlete, coach or scholar, our professional environment will give each candidate the solid foundation for a successful future.” The Gala Dinner saw graduates, from the Academy’s Westfield football club, receive their BTEC graduation certificates, from Daniel’s brother, Leon and uncle, former Derby County, Leicester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers player Dean Sturridge. orshipped as a god since the dawn of civilization, the immortal En Sabah Nur (Oscar Isaac) becomes the first and most powerful mutant. After lying dormant for thousands of years, he awakens to find a world he doesn't recognise - a world he despises. He recruits the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and several other mutants he imbues with power in order to help him create a new world order. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Professor X (James McAvoy) and Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) lead a team of young X-Men to stop their seemingly invincible nemesis from destroying mankind. The X-Men franchise has been a strange one. Spanning almost two decades, the franchise has brought us eight movies that range in quality from downright awful to downright brilliant. So, where does X-Men: Apocalypse rank in all of this, I hear you ask? Well, somewhere in the middle. The main problem with superhero sequels is that their predecessors are already huge blockbusters with mind-bending storylines and dazzling visuals, so the knee-jerk reaction from every production company is to go bigger. Every sequel needs to be bigger, louder and longer than the last, but the unfortunate truth is that bigger doesn't always mean better and such is the case with X-Men: Apocalypse.

T

he Collider 2 is the sequel to Shortbreak Studios tunnel racer, The Collider, and with a fresh look and insane high speeds, the game appears to be on to a winner. With 54 levels, plus an endless mode, and 6 upgradable ships to unlock, there isn’t really much of a story to the levels, with the overarching ‘Story’ being told in a loading screen cutscene, it isn’t needed to enjoy the fast paced action that The Collider 2 brings. With full VR support for both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, the game wants you in the middle of it all, hurtling along at breakneck speeds, dodging in and out of holes as you career towards your goal. Simple to play, difficult to master is a term that describes The Collider 2 perfectly. Moving with the mouse, and left clicking to boost are as far as your controls go.

wORDS by antony brown

It is by far the biggest X-Men movie to date, with the largest cast, the broadest scope and the biggest action scenes, but in order to achieve those things, the film makers have had to sacrifice some of the heart that has made the X-Men franchise so engaging. There has always been themes of racism, segregation and political warfare that make many of the X-Men adventures a little deeper than most superhero fare, but many of those themes are dropped in their latest adventure to focus on the omnipotent new

villain, En Sabah Nur (also known as, but never explicitly referred to as, Apocalypse) and all of the game-changing destruction he brings with him. Unfortunately, the filmmakers fail to make Apocalypse interesting enough to be considered an amazing villain. He's not a bad villain by any stretch of the imagination, but he's not particularly great either. Oscar Isaac, one of the finest

Managing boost bars to not overheat, while destroying or collecting objects on each run gives just enough variety to not get boring, and with the added game mechanics as each phase is unlocked, the progression is there to test you. By far the most fun aspect of The Collider 2 has to be the endless Survival Mode, pitting you against friends and strangers alike in weekly leaderboards to get the highest scores you can.

actors of his generation, plays the titular villain and he does the best with the material he's given, but that doesn't change the fact that Apocalypse spends the majority of the film spouting generic super-villain dialogue and pseudo-philosophical musings on the weakness of mankind and how we have destroyed the world and need to be eradicated. It's all entertaining, but it's nothing we haven't seen before, which is exactly what it should have been when you have a villain as powerful as Apocalypse at your disposal. As with most X-Men movies, the entire cast are fantastic, and serve to elevate the material to a more sophisticated level. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence return as Professor X, Magneto and Mystique and their chemistry is as good as ever. The supporting cast, many of whom are new to the franchise, also do a great job. Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler), Ben Hardy (Angel) and Olivia Munn (Psylocke) all bring the necessary enthusiasm to their respective roles and they are all welcome additions to the franchise. Evan Peters, who stole the show

With massive multipliers the long you boost for without letting up, and increasing difficulty as you work your way through the mode, this has to be one of the most thrillingly simple games to enjoy. At £6.99 on the Steam Store, it has just enough variety and fun to warrant its cost, but it feels more like a 10 minute spare time killer here or there, than a game that you will be playing on repeat for hours.

in a brief appearance as Quicksilver in Days of Future Past, returns with a larger role to play in Apocalypse and by God, he manages to steal the show yet again. Director Bryan Singer also does a fantastic job, and particularly shines during the action sequences. Singer has now directed four of the eight X-Men movies, so his ability to direct action was never

in question, but he's never done anything quite this big before and it's awesome. Every action sequence is epic and inventive, especially Quicksilver's big introduction which is arguably the best scene in the entire movie. There is also an absolutely vicious and surprisingly violent cameo from Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, because let's face it, you

just can't have an X-Men movie without Hugh Jackman appearing in some capacity. He's only in the movie briefly but boy does he make a big a impact. While X-Men: Apocalypse never quite reaches the dizzying heights of X-Men 2, X-Men: First Class or X-Men: Days of Future Past, it is still an excellent chapter in the long-running superhero saga.

It was great that such lavish affairs was able to bring Birmingham’s communities together as one to unite and celebrate each other’s rich cultures; The question remains ‘Will it ever be the same again, or, do people have to start paying to enter our community parks for events that has always been free for the family.

s one of the city’s premier ‘shining diamonds’ on its events calendar, the incredibly highly attended reggae extravaganza, Simmer Down, Birmingham’s No.1 outdoor celebration of its musical heritage and vibrant multiculturalism – catering for every corner of its vast, diverse communitieshas already proved to have left a huge chasm when it comes to free family fun-days for all. Bringing some of the world’s biggest award-winning artists and bands to Handsworth Park, its demise has left an almighty hole to fill. In its short few years it superseded that over free ‘spirit of unity,’ the now seemingly extinct Birmingham Carnival which, in itself, brought the city together as one. “When the Carnival’s original organizer, Tex

What advice would you give your 12 year old self?

Do not be afraid to take risks and do something you're not the best at. That's the only way you can get better. Work hard and don't let other people bring you down.

Miss Caribbean United Kingdom was set up as an event to promote all the different Caribbean countries under one umbrella. The event uses a pageant to promote, educate, inspire and celebrate

the historical and cultural impact of the Caribbean within the United Kingdom. The MCUK organisers, Clayton and Jacqui Brown, have expressed that this is set to be The Ultimate Crown for Caribbean Pageants in the UK. “We want to ensure that this event continues to grow and includes the whole Caribbean community, both here in the UK and Internationally. This is more than just a pageant to us; it is a means to unite around a common cause.” “We want MCUK to be a vehicle which will assist in bringing the Caribbean and its diaspora within the UK, closer.” “We want the old and younger

ultimately crowned Miss Caribbean UK 2015. With more promotion, bigger prizes and more opportunities for those who finish first, second and third; 2016 has already seen many more applicants. Esha Ilyas

I

n this months’ spotlight, I would like to introduce you to 12 year old Esha Ilyas whom I love and admire so much, not only because of her bravery but because of her incredible tenacity. She is a role model to both the old and the young, she had a dream and went full out to achieve it. The constant pain and years of hospital visits since being diagnosed at just 18 months old. I struggled to remember when and where Esha and I first met. I spoke with Esha’s mother Manisha and she reminded me of wonderful memories that were created over the years. I was recommended to Esha’s parents by organiser Jonathan Morris of the International Day of Disabled People in Barking and Dagenham, someone I had supported with performances over the years. The first IDDP fundraiser dinner and dance kicked off and I met Esha for the first time. I remember being blown away by a tiny little girl who had the biggest smile and the most positive attitude. Around this time, Esha was

Manisha recalls watching her daughter with an incredibly pleased as punch face, glowing while riding her pony called Blaze. For many, it was hard to believe that at that time Esha had cerebral palsy. In Esha’s case, her muscles – partic- l Esha Ilyas and her mother Manisha aim of this intensive treatment ularly those in her legs – were excessively tight, is not to get children riding, but which prevented her full range to use the shape and gait of the of movement while weakness horse as a therapeutic tool – to in other muscles that normally stimulate muscle tone, relax stiff maintain posture meant she had joints and improve balance, posproblems holding herself up- ture and walking ability. As a result, Esha and children trained in equine physiology, the like her are better able to cope with the tasks of daily living such as making a cup of tea! The physio ha not just improved balance and posture, it gave Esha a passion for horses and riding, one of her favourite places to ride, Chigwell Centre’s 140-acre nature reserve. Esha’s dream to walk unaided was a light at the end of a tunnel. September 2013 her parents found out that

l Esha Ilyas there was surgery that could enable Esha to walk without her frame, but NHS England would not fund the Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery. This special surgery is where the nerves between the muscles and spinal cord are cut to loosen muscles which would improve her posture, balance and movement. Hospital doctors recommended that Esha undergo surgery before she turned 11. The cost, a massive £36,000! Although this was a daunting figure to raise, with the help of friends, family and the com-

munity - fundraising began and so did Esha’s positivity and her Dream To Walk. The surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital and physiotherapy was soon to begin. As the fund-raising campaign gathered its momentum, the strength from family, friends and the community grew. The reward tireless work and organizing that became a part of her families’ life. And now two years on, her parents views is that it was all totally worth it! It has changed Esha’s life in many ways. She wanted to be able to walk into school without her frame and she can do that now. Esha’s parents took her to Dubai, whereas before this time, she could not walk on sand but they took her to the beach while they were there and she was able to walk. Although like everything, she

found it a bit of a challenge, but with determination, she did it and was so happy that she was able to play independently on the beach. Only three months after surgery Esha began secondary school. PE teachers watched Esha grow stronger and more active during lessons and her parents received letters from the department congratulating Esha on her progress. The donations and support have now enabled Esha to walk in the swimming pool and kick her legs which she was unable to do previously! Manisha repeats her thanks to everyone who helped them with allowing Esha’s dream to be fulfilled. “Not only our nearest and dearest but especially the people we had never met before who also helped our journey become more bearable. Every penny was appreciated, every prayer, every single person who offered to be a part and helped towards reaching the goal. You are all always in our prayers and your support will never be forgotten. The journey to make sure our daughter could achieve her dream was both emotional and exciting, we cannot be thankful enough to see that Esha is now able to do and take part in everyday things she was unable to do before. Esha’s progress and the change in her is a true miracle and she continues to grow stronger, her confidence has grown and she is definitely having a better quality of life. Seeing her walk into the school gates with a smile on her face makes it all worth it.” Esha continues to encourage everyone with her story. “I can’t believe there were so many nice people who wanted to help me. I can do much more now than I could imagine. It’s so much fun playing Just Dance on the Wii and walking when I go shopping. It was my dream and it came true. Who says dreams don’t come true, mine did.” I am encouraged by strong young people like Esha and by those who support them! It soon spread very quickly to 240 members as each person on the group was really starting to add their contacts too. Special Guest Speaker, Birmingham City Councillor Waseem Zaffar MBE JP BSc (Hons), Labour Councillor for Lozells & East Handsworth Ward, took the opportunity to announce his

new appointment to the Cabinet of Chair of Birmingham City Council O&S Committee for Corporate Resources. Abid Khanm of Insure Direct WithUs took the opportunity to mentioned a new development at the firm, saying; “We’ve just launched a property owner contract covering architecture, design planning, building regulations and production information. We do interior design – including the education sector – so people looking into taken up property will be clearer about any regulations

Samuel Leeds. Also running a charity and a Christian network, he was at pains to say; “Between the ages of 17 and 21, I already had £1million worth of a property portfolio and that’s all down to learning the ‘3 Ws;’ When to invest; Where to invest; and What to invest. The first is; NOW; The second, ANYWHERE and the third; MORE FOR LESS. On average, property values ‘doubles’ every 10 years so, if you’re not investing in property, you’re crazy.

an island, I'll call its independence and host the migrants and provide jobs for them building their new country," he wrote. Worth over £3 billion, the Egyptian businessman holds numerous honours, including the ‘Legion d’Honneur’, the ‘Stella della solidarietà italiana’ and ‘Sitara-e-Quaid-eAzam’ from France, Italy and Pakistan respectively, for his outstanding contributions to those countries. The only problem was, that none of the countries approached were too big on the idea, and with the logistics of managing an island including passport controls and governance, who can blame them? But at least he tried doing something. In a world where far too often people look over the negatives and try to focus on the positives, here was someone trying to make a positive out of a negative. While his idea didn’t end up amounting to anything feasible, he should definitely be applauded for trying when it seems most will not even attempt anything even bordering on a solution.

Subject to Cabinet approval, the housing company will embark on an initial three-phase development programme over five years. The first phase, between 2016 and 2018, will see around 371 homes built on council-owned land at the former Danesmore Park Primary School site in Ashmore Park (45 homes), former Wednesfield High School site (258 homes), former swimming baths site on Prouds Lane in Bilston (40 homes), and former Ettingshall School site (28 homes). RH Prince Edward, Duke of Kent visited one of Birmingham’s most familiar landmarks, StMartin-in-the-Bull Ring, to unveil a stunning, new stained glass window. The window, situated within the Prayer Chapel and created by award-winning artist Craigie Aitchison CBE RSA RA, is one of the only two designs by the late artist, in the world, depicting the crucifixion of Jesus as a recurring motif and it was apt that the Prince, father-in-law of art dealer Timothy Taylor, whose gallery acts as the official representative to The Estate of the artist who designed the window, should be present for the unveiling. Since the church suffered bomb damage in World War II, plain glass windows have been in place in the chapel. Val Aslin, a member of St Martin’s

Aitchison died in 2009, leaving Richard Paton of Rainbow Glass Studios to bring Craigie’s design to life. Revd Raja is the vicar of St Nicholas in Curdworth, near Sutton Coldfield, but began life in Pannaivilai, a small village in south India. While teaching at the United Theological College, Bangalore, he first encountered the ignorance and fear surrounding HIV-positive communities when a local priest asked his advice on whether to remove a couple from his church who had contracted the virus, in the fear that they may infect others when sharing communion. In consultation with medical professionals, Joshva took to the streets with students from the Theological College. They drew crowds using drama, puppet shows and music and then used these media to educate local people about the virus and its victims. He was called to sit on various governmental committees tackling the HIV problem and, with UNAIDS (United Nations Programme on HIV & AIDS), ran an international consultation on how faith groups can better serve communities affected by the virus. “Fundamentally, I wanted to change the negative attitude towards HIV sufferers into a positive one,” he explains. “We have a mandate to care for them, not blame and exclude them.”

On arrival in England I discovered that I would have to re-train for four years to continue in the teaching profession unlike teachers coming from New Zealand, USA, Canada, and Australia who were allowed to do 3-6 month refresher courses. I refused to do that. I regard the education system in Jamaica as far better in my experience to what I have seen in Britain and invite the reader to read between the lines of what that approach to re-training meant to teachers from the Caribbean. Instead I did a Masters degree in Socio-Legal Studies at Birmingham University and worked in the area of Equality & Diversity and the Criminal Justice System for over 30 years prior to taking early retirement. I am not medically qualified or a dietician but having had Type 2 diabetes for the past 12 years which runs in my family I am in a position to talk and write with some knowledge about my experiences living with this medical condition. Being one of the fortunate ones never to have taken medication for the management of my diabetes I count that as a blessing. It is controlled strictly by a healthy diet and physical activity and this is the message that I really want to get across to others as one of the Diabetes UK Community Champions, a voluntary role I have been doing in the West Midlands since 2012. For this article my focus will be on three areas.

Recruitment Drive

Firstly there is a major recruitment drive in Britain for 1000 Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Diabetes Community Champions over the next year as the need is of paramount importance for these ethnic groups. All the research, statistics and figures

show a remarkable and alarming trend of these ethnic groups due in particular to their genetics, metabolism, ethnicity, cultural factors, diet and lack of physical activity developing Type 2 diabetes which is preventable at a much earlier age than their white counterparts and in far greater numbers. If you want to be considered to become one of the Diabetes Community Champions a role that I really enjoy as it is about educating all ethnic communities then email communitychampions@diabetes. org.uk , call 0800 138 1639 or apply at forms.diabetes.org.uk/community-champion-application Secondly other voluntary roles that might interest you.

VOLUNTEERING IN OTHER ROLES

There are more than 4 million people living with diabetes in Britain and the volunteers help them in many ways. Whether you can spare an hour a month or a day a week, there are a range of activities that you can take part in to get involved with their work. You can help to organise an event, deliver 'Know your Risk' assessments at one of their Roadshows, run a Diabetes UK Local Group or fundraise on their behalf, whatever inspires you to get involved. To find out more about the volunteering opportunities available in your local area please call 0345 123 2399 and they will be able to put you through to the Diabetes UK office that covers your region. Thirdly celebrating diabetes week.

ne brave patient put aside his treatment today to get all wrapped up and proudly launch Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity’s fourth annual summer fundraiser – The Big Bandage. Three-year-old Noah Dixey, from Leicestershire, who has a condition called Alagille Syndrome– a rare genetic disorder that affects his liver, heart, kidneys and skin – went bonkers in bandages to encourage others to join in on Friday 8 July and make a donation, just like him. Following his diagnosis at six-months-old, Noah has had five operations to help ease his condition. He also has to visit the children’s hospital every six weeks and take 16 different types of medication per day. The beauty of this year’s Big Bandage campaign is supporters can choose whichever

ward, service or department their money goes to, meaning they’ll be helping to shape the future of Birmingham Children’s Hospital and make a real difference to the treatment, care and support it offers for generations to come. Noah’s mum Gemma said: “Despite his condition, Noah’s a typical little boy who loves cars, trains, snails and slugs, so he really enjoyed popping on some bandages to help launch The Big Bandage and we’ll be getting involved on the day itself too.” She added: “We love the children’s hospital and cannot thank the staff enough for their incredible care – Noah even sees his visits as a holiday! As a family, we’re delighted to be able to give something

back and we know first-hand exactly how life-changing fundraising can be.” The Big Bandage is one of the hospital charity’s largest annual events, which has raised more than £150,000 since it launched in 2013.

This year, The Big Bandage hopes to encourage celebrities, businesses, patients, staff, schools and community groups to dress up in dressings for Big Bandage day

on Friday 8 July. Miranda Williams, Public Fundraising Manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We are very delighted to have the support of Noah to launch our favourite fundraiser of the year and as he has proved, getting involved couldn’t be easier! “Whether you wrap your arm, your leg, your boss or your teacher, please join us from now until Friday 8 July and make a big difference with your Big Bandage to the brave patients treated at our hospital.” To get involved with this year’s Big Bandage, visit www. bch.org.uk/bigbandage or text BANDAGE to 70099 to donate £2. Plus, don’t forget to use the hashtag #BigBandage to share your support on social media.

DIABETES WEEK

Diabetes Week is an annual highlight in the Diabetes UK calendar. It’s a time when we bring our supporters together to raise awareness of the condition, and vital funds for our work. This year Diabetes Week runs from Sunday 12 June to Saturday 18 June 2016. Just about everyone has heard about diabetes and with 4 million people diagnosed in the UK, most of us know a friend or family member living with the condition. Yet it’s still hugely misunderstood and there are so many myths and misconceptions out there that this year’s theme is Setting the record straight. Diabetes UK is calling on everyone to share straight talking stories, facts and videos to let everyone know the truth about diabetes. So if you have any questions about Diabetes Week, contact them at diabetesweek@diabetes.org.uk.

une 19th is World Sickle Cell Awareness Day and one of the great successes of those working to diagnose and treat SC effectively is the national introduction of testing every baby born for the disease. Birmingham’s own physio lecturer Dr. Melrose Stewart has sent a big thank you to all those who have helped her celebrate her first official run and age group win in the Great Birmingham 10K on 1st May 2016. This all started with a ‘have a go’ opportunity. Post event, she was prompted by so many well-wishers and offers to share in the celebrations that she decided to set up a charity fund. To date, public generosity has benefited the Sickle Cell Society by £597.50 (including gift aid). Dr. Mel says the gift is as remarkable as her unexpected win! If anyone still wishes or is waiting to make a donation, the fund was scheduled to close on 16th May 2016 but the link is still active due to popular de-

mand https://www.justgiving. com/Mel-Fraser1 If you or someone you know suffers from sickle cell disease, there's hope. Iesha Thomas, who suffered from the disease herself, is the first person to be cured. Iesha, 33, was a victim of the brutal disease which progressively got worse as she aged. It really wreaked havoc on her life after she gave birth to her daughter, resulting in her needing repeat blood transfusions and 2 hip replacements. Her medical breakthrough resulted when doctors at the University of Illinois Hospital

& Health Science System performed a procedure using medication to suppress her immune system and a small dose of total body radiation before doing the stem cell transplant. The procedure allowed for Iesha’s own bone marrow to coexist with that of the donor. The goal of the transplant is for the stem cells to gradually take over the bone marrow’s role in producing normal, healthy red blood cells. HealthUnlocked are working with HealthiVibe, to find people in the UK who are over 18 years of age, have a confirmed diagnosis of Sickle Cell Disease and can read and speak English. Qualifying candidates will be asked to take part in up to 3 phone interviews and will be paid for their time at the end of the process. If you believe you are eligible for this, please register your interest by calling +44 207 520 9041 or send this link to someone who you think may be interested.

The afternoon will feature a seminar on findings from the first national survey of sickle cell patients and carers, and what we can do to move forward with these results. Lunch will be provided. The event is free, but spaces are limited. Please book your space at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London, WC2B 5DA. The Sickle Cell Society is a registered charity established by a group of patients, parents and health professionals who were all concerned about the lack of understanding and inadequacy of treatment with sickle cell disorders. The Society assists individuals with sickle cell disorders to realise their full economic and social potential. This is achieved by improving opportunities for sickle cell affected individuals and families by raising public awareness through education, advocacy together with the provision of direct welfare services, assisting in research and lobbying.

events (religious and cultural) along with articles, an online petition, a letter in the Sunday Times and Early Day Motions in Parliament to promote the idea of a public holiday to celebrate the Windrush Generation and the contribution of immigration and migration to Britain since WW2. With this in mind a range of organisations reflecting faith, politics, race equality, migration and heritage will be participating in a planning event that will take place on the 22nd June 2016 at the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton from 1.00-5.00pm to develop ideas to commemorate the 70th anniversary. Please feel free to drop in during the afternoon if you want to contribute ideas or offer assist-

ance for 2018. If you cannot make the meeting please email your suggestions to Kumar Rajagopalan at siva_kumar.t21@ b t i n t e r n e t . c o m or Patrick Vernon at patrickvernon@btconnect. com (please also email to RSVP your attendance on the 22nd of June). There's an urgency to do this since the Windrush generation is fast disappearing. Many of those born between 1910 and 1940 may not be around at the 70th anniversary Windrush celebrations in 2018. We can't afford to wait eight years to mark their achievement, and we will be poorer as a nation if we fail to document their ¬history and contribution to Britain and beyond. Of course, we cannot escape the lead up to the Referendum vote on 23rd June. Operation Black Vote wants to ensure that our communities have as many facts at their disposable as possible. What do we gain and what do we lose by leaving or remaining in the EU? OBV will also be promoting voter registration, which is a prerequisite to vote. The deadline to register to vote is the 7th June. OBV will be reaching out to all sections of the electorate in a series of informative debates across the country including BME communities and young people pressing the need to play a full and positive role in the EU referendum vote on the 23rd of June.

ADOPTION AND FOSTERING

The Phoenix – June 2016 IN REMEMBRANCE OF

W

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience. Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons why a child is placed in care.

There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!

We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

Adoption & Fostering Our ongoing campaign to help the children in need in our communities

Fostering in London

T

here is a huge demand for fostering in London, not only because of the high population of people but also because there are many areas where social issues exist which may, for a number of reasons, compound difficulties within the family setting. London is a diverse and often hectic city, with some boroughs requiring more fostering services than others. As such, UK Fostering offer a flexible range of fostering placements in order to address each type of fostering need. These range from emergency fostering placements, where a foster carer is needed within 24

hours of notice, to short term and bridging placements, and longer term, more permanent foster care. Fostering in London means caring for children from a wide range of ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. UK Fostering recognises that children need to be placed with those who understand their religious or cultural needs, and as such our foster carers come from all walks of life. They try to ensure the needs of these children are always addressed through the matching process, where we will endeavour to place a child with someone form the same religion or background where possible.

New rules overhaul for adoption process

W

ith new rules set out to speed up the adoption system and ensure more children get a stable, loving home without delay coming into force next month, it means reduced delays, especially for Black and other non-white children - giving adopters a much more active role in finding children they might be suitable to

adopt. Prime Minister David Cameron’s promises of new laws to reduce the chronic delays endured by children waiting for adoption has seen him set out plans for a national register matching children with families, moves to force councils to approve prospective adopters more quickly and stop social workers leaving children in care because they cannot find a perfect ethnic match for

them, even though other families could offer them a loving home. In another change, prospective adoptive parents will be able to look after the child they have been matched with under a fostering arrangement before the court has made its final decision on whether adoption can go ahead in a Bill which will be tabled in the next session of Parliament. Mr. Cameron said; “It will be-

come law that, for instance, race, cultural background or language must not be a ‘significant or decisive factor’ in placing children with adoptive parents.” He also said; “At present, distance can be a huge hurdle to adoption, so, speeding up adoption is ‘a priority’ for the Government.” The announced changes form the government’s response to the ‘Adoption: getting it right, making it work’ consultation and approved adopters will soon be allowed access to the Adoption and Children Act Register. There will also be moves to force councils to approve prospective adopters more quickly – perhaps in as little as three months.

Grenada Wins Gold at RHS Chelsea Flower Show

T

he Grenada exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016 named 'Three Enchanting Islands - Pure Grenada' won Gold for the 12th time. The Show team was led by Grenadian-based designer Catherine John and brought Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique to life with a display of floral diversity. "Our theme this year was inspired by the distinct floral character of the three islands, which although in close proximity of each other in the Southern Caribbean Sea, do not receive the same amount of rainfall. The vegetation and crops grown on Carriacou and Petite Martinique are markedly different from those that thrive in Grenada," said Mrs. John. The greenery and spices were all grown in Grenada and arranged to Catherine's design, ahead of Monday 23rd May when the display enthralled Press Day visitors including Grenada’s High Commissioner, His Excellency Mr. Karl Hood and Dr Johnson Beharry VC - recipient of the highest military decoration for valour in the British and Commonwealth

armed forces, who was born in Grenada. "As small islands we are mindful of rising sea levels due to climate change, and our display features the coastline as a reminder of the balance of nature that we all depend upon," added Mrs. John. The display won a gold medal, making this the twelfth gold medal Grenada has received at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. "We're delighted that the exhibit has been awarded Gold here in London. My personal inspiration this year comes from just wanting to differentiate and display the diversity of plant materials on our Sister Isles,” said Catherine after receiving the news. "Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique are three distinctive islands that each boasts a remarkable natural landscape. The design team has captured the essence of all three islands to provide visitors to the world's greatest flower show with an authentic taste of Pure Grenada, the Spice of the Caribbean," said Ms. Sharon Bernstein, Grenada Tourism Authority Director of Sales for the UK & Ireland.

Baku City Circuit On-Track to Host Formula 1

n FIA delegation, led by the FIA Formula One Race Director and Safety Delegate, Charlie Whiting, inspected the readiness of the Baku City Circuit ahead of the 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe, to be held in Baku,Azerbaijan. The inspection evaluated the quality of the track and its surrounding facilities to ensure it will be fit for the purpose of hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix street race. After carrying out a thorough inspection of the newest circuit on the Formula

1 calendar, the commission delivered a hugely positive verdict, declaring Baku City Circuit as being on-track to host its first ever Formula 1 race. During his inspection, Whiting – joined by the circuit’s famed architect Hermann Tilke - covered all aspects of F1’s newest street circuit, including the Paddock and Pit Lane, located right in front of Baku’s magnificent Government Building, as well as the soon-tobe iconic image of the 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe - the 7.6 metre narrow, uphill, winding sequence of turns (T8-T11) by the city’s Old Town

The Starmus Festival III will take place between 27th June and 2nd July 2016 at the Mare Nostrum Resort complex in Playa de las Américas. Prof. Stephen Hawking will be the real 'star' of Starmus Festival III, themed Beyond the Horizon – Tribute to Stephen Hawking. The theoretical physicist will not only answer questions from the general public at the Ask Hawking event, but the legendary man himself will also launch the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication, in recognition of those whose work contributes to scientific dissemination through different disciplines. Lead guitarist of Queen and astronomer Dr. Brian May will also be attending the science and astronomy extravaganza – he will be performing together with rock legend Rick Wakeman. One of the festival's main music events will be the 'Sonic Universe' concert – a unique show which will take guests on a journey through space with performances by English soprano and songwriter Sarah Brightman and the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, widely regarded as one of the best in Spain.

walls. His inspection also took in the ‘dual carriageway’ section of the circuit as well as the main straight along Baku’s picturesque seaside boulevard, where cars are estimated to hit speeds of up to 340 km/h as they race towards the finish line. Following his assessment of Baku City Circuit, Whiting confirmed that everything is looking good ahead of the city’s first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix this June: “The Circuit will be ready. You can see the quality of all the installations wherever you look. My next trip to Baku will be at the beginning of June and I’m expecting to be able to say it will be ready then! It will be a fascinating F1 race. Turns 8 to12 will probably be the most interesting but so will the run from Turn 12 to 15, where the approach to Turn 15 in particular will be quite spectacular. The very long run from Turn 16 to 20, which is going to be flat out, will also be amazing to watch! If I had to compare one circuit to this one, it would be Singapore, but the speed here will be much higher!”

The club’s ‘National Basketball Summer Camp’ will be taking place at their Nechells Wellbeing Centre home and nearby Heartlands Academy and will be the first of its kind in the City of Birmingham. In addition to the presence of NBA ‘Hall of Fame’ inductee Hakeem, the organisers have engaged coaches from Houston recommended by Hakeem, together with some of the UK’s leading coaches in basketball development. On this exciting development Nigerian-American Hakeem, who led his Houston Rockets team to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, commented “After making a visit to Nechells Wellbeing Centre, what I saw there so impressed me that, on the invitation of the club, I returned almost immediately. It confirmed to me that there is a thriving basketball community in Birmingham and the City of Birmingham basketball club is something I want to be involved in.

t’s well-known that the greatest ‘ice-breaker’ in any form of barrier is football and it is a priceless tool in order to help integrate young migrants into any new society they now call home. In Switzerland there’s an organization which has acknowledged that fact by setting-up Raumfang to help break down language barriers cultural differences to establishing brand new relationships. Project leader, Damian Hegg, “With ‘Football Connects’ we offer weekly training sessions with professional coaches to migrants from all over the country. We also offer them the chance to play in organised leagues and tournaments.” Sessions included the presence of Swiss professional footballer and volunteer coach Stephanie Gobet, who split her time between refereeing the kickabout and encouraging two young girls to join in and be a part of the training session. “The vast majority of the migrants consists of boys, which is understandable if you think how many of these girls came from environments where it’s simply not normal to have a girl playing football,” she said. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing them giving in and then leaving the pitch with a wide smile on their faces.” ‘Football Connects’ has been organising training sessions for nearly 250 children aged 12 to 18, coming from countries such as Eritrea, Afghanistan and Syria.

Eastern promise for relegated Villa?

C

hinese businessman Xia Jiantong has agreed to buy Championship side, Aston Villa, possibly pay more than £100 million (RM596 million) for the club. He said, though, that he would not be “burning money” to turn it around. Former European Cup winners, Villa, have been in decline since American Randy Lerner, who once owned the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, bought the club for US$125 million (RM511.3 million) in 2006. They were relegated from the Premier League this season after winning just three matches. The Villa deal, however, with 100% ownership, is not just an investment. The acquisition of one of England’s most historic clubs by a Chinese businessman follows China’s biggest overseas invest-

ment in soccer last December, when a consortium led by statebacked China Media Capital took a US$400 million stake in the owner of Manchester City. Villa’s website said Xia, who studied at Harvard and spent a period at Oxford University, had become a Villa fan “many years ago.” In a final message to Villa’s fans, outgoing owner, Randy Lerner, said he was confident that Xia, introduced on the club’s website as Tony Xia, would invest in the squad and the club’s infrastructure, including its iconic Villa Park stadium. His excitement to develop Villa Park shone through. I remain convinced that this is a crucial part of the club’s future as it provides a critical, long-term second source of revenue and therefore sustainability for the club from which squad-funding can potentially come,” Lerner said.

Leicester win again as Paternostro voted BBL Coach of the Year

L

eicester Riders’ playcaller Rob Paternostro has been crowned the Molten Ed Percival BBL Coach of the Year for 201516. Recognised by BBL clubs for his efforts this season, they voted overwhelmingly in favour of handing Paternostro the accolade for the third time in his career. It means he now joins an elite club, since he’s only the third play-caller in BBL history to have reached the landmark - following in the footsteps of Kevin Cadle and Fab Flournoy. With the BBL Trophy and

BBL Championship already tucked safely in the cabinet at the Leicester Community Sports Arena, he won his first award in 2009 and then again in 2013 when he led Riders to their first ever silverware treble, having secured the prestigious individual accolade which was recently re-named in honour of the late former BBL Chairman Ed Percival.

Paralympic gold medallist and a former international athlete-turned city councillor have urged Birmingham’s leaders to seriously consider a bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Aldridge swimmer Ellie Simmonds and Kings Norton Labour councilor Peter Griffiths believe a bid would give the city a major boost. Their comments come after it emerged that Liverpool wants to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games and joined calls for Birmingham to consider a rival bid. Four-times Paralympic gold medalist, Ellie, said: “For the Commonwealth Games to come to Birmingham would be a wonderful thing for the city. It would help raise its profile, encourage sporting participation and perhaps help improve sporting facilities.”

Cllr Griffiths ran cross country for Great Britain and in 1977 grabbed a 3,000 metre steeplechase gold medal in a UK v France international meeting in Nice. He believes the city owes it to its next generation to go for the 2026 Games. “We can see in Manchester and Glasgow the legacy of the facilities built and provided. There’s also the continuing use of the competition facilities after,” he said. “We have the World Indoor Athletics championships here in 2018, but that is only two days, we could do better.” While Birmingham has the Alexander Stadium, three professional football club and now a competition class swimming pool at the University of Birmingham, it lacks other facilities like a cycle track.
