ne man’s determination to revive the reputation of a sporting icon and Olympic gold medallist has paid off with the news that the forgotten hero is to be honoured by a prestigious Blue Plaque. In 1976, Birmingham-born John Curry made figure skating history at the Winter Olympics taking home two gold medals for Team GB and becoming a sporting hero, winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year. But in the years that followed, he slowly slipped out of the public consciousness, and his untimely death in 1994 left a generation completely unaware of his achievements. Actor and writer Tony Timberlake embarked on personal journey to change this, first through his one
man show, ‘Looking For John,’ which premiered at Birmingham Repertory Theatre last November and secondly by nominating John Curry, with the support of The REP theatre to be honoured with a Blue Plaque in his home city. The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councilor Carl Rice and John Curry’s brother, Andrew, unveiled the Blue Plaque, awarded by Birmingham Civic Society, in honour of his achievements. John grew up in Acocks Green and the plaque will feature on the house where he was born - at 946 Warwick Road, now Arden Lodge Residential Home. Timberlake said: “Getting recognition for John Curry has been a labour of love. “Watching him win Olympic gold forty years ago had a huge impact on me as a youngster and it’s
never left me. “ ‘Looking for John’ made me think about his legacy – how he changed the world of figure skating and how he never denied who he was in his personal life. “I’m thrilled that John Curry will be celebrated once more and remembered forever in this way.” Birmingham Civic Society chair, Gavin Orton, said: “Towards the end of last year we received a nomination from Tony Timberlake and the Birmingham Rep for a Blue Plaque to John Curry which was supported by the Lord Mayor and we are delighted to be honouring John’s achievements.” John Curry OBE (1949 – 1994) first learnt to skate at Solihull Ice Rink. ‘Looking for John’ will be at The Assembly, Edinburgh as part of the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe in August.

Free Information App Launched for Multiple Casualty Incidents
F
ollowing the tragedies in Manchester, an app and pocket guide that has been developed to advise members of the public on what they can do if involved in a multiple casualty incident, including a bombing or a shooting is being pushed out. citizenAID was set up by a team of senior clinicians with military and civilian experience and is a part of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham Charity. This deep experience of blast and gunshot injury was gathered during conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and is the basis of the information provided in the guide. For more information please see citizenaid.org, where you will also find a public information film on immediate actions that will save lives in the aftermath of a bombing (this film carries a ‘discretion advised’ warning). The simple system enables the public to keep safe and offers guidance on how to provide life-saving immediate aid for the injured around them. Professor Sir Keith Porter, co-author of citizenAID said, “The events in Manchester last night sadly highlight the need for everyone to be empowered with the knowledge that they
may need if they are caught up in such an incident. The citizenAID app is free to download and I would encourage everyone to do so, and to familiarise themselves with its content.” One of the aims is to give the younger generation the tools that they need to keep themselves safe and to help to treat others. The events in Manchester have once again highlighted the importance of this.” Launched across all platforms in January, citizenAID was debated in the House of Lords in February following a question by Lord Jordan, and support offered to the initiative by the Home Office Minister. The initiative recently held its first major conference in Birmingham where, amongst other speakers, Chief Inspector Richard Harding (Head of the National Counter Terrorism Security Office) spoke on the merits of the citizenAID app.

fter the devastating attack on concert goers at the MEN Arena in Manchester on the evening of Monday 22nd May, that left 22 dead and 59 injured, there were vocal outpourings of support for the people of Manchester. Many took to social media to
voice their outrage at the attack and the perpetrator, and to lend a helping hand to the people of Manchester through whatever means they could. The Prime Minister issued a statement condemning the attack, whilst Her Majesty the Queen and various other royals across Europe offered their condolences and deepest sympathies to the people

of Manchester. Across the UK, people have been helping the people of Manchester through sharing posts of those still missing or in need of help through social media, as well as raising money for those in desperate need of assistance following the attack. A series of vigils in town and city squares were arranged across the nation for six in the evening on Tuesday 23rd May, including one in Birmingham. With representatives from all major political parties in the city in attendance, as well as most faith groups in the region, there was a good turnout in Victoria Square in front of the Council House. Leading the speeches, the Bishop of Birmingham the Right Reverend David Urquhart (pictured right) said, “When we come together like this as we have tragically from time to time in this city, we do so in solidarity with those who are passionate for peace.” “Do Birmingham proud on be-

Islam teaches unity, and they have gone against the teachings of our Prophet. “We today are showing the world that our communities are standing together.” Amrick Singh Ubhi from the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha
Sikh Gurdwara on Soho Road and Chair of the Council of Sikh Gurdwaras in Birmingham softly encouraged the crowd, “This is not in the name of religion, I would go as far as saying that this isn’t in the name of humanity. If we are not feeling the pain of Westminster, of Manchester, and the world over, we are not human. Join up, unite and stand together, and do not let terror rule or win the day.” Recently elected Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street added, “There is so much in common between our two cities, the histories, the aspirations we now have,
and the welcome that our cities have offered so many people. “Our heart goes out to all Mancunians tonight. There is a very important message for us to send today, and that is quite simply that terrorism will never win.” “Today, we are all Mancunians.” Despite the tragedy that was inflicted on the people of Manchester by a senseless attack, they have rallied, and have the full support of the people of the entire United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

t was never going to be in doubt. Despite the tragic atrocities just days before thousands took to the streets, many in defiance, to celebrate yet another roaringly successful Birmingham Pride weekend of fun and solidarity. The events in Manchester did nothing to deter people from coming into the city in their thousands. In fact it made people more determined to come together with the streets of the city centre filled with people dancing, singing and having fun as they watch the parade go by. With sponsors, supporters and friends including; HSBC, Manchester Airport and San
Francisco Direct, Smirnoff, Southside, Midlands Zone, GB Training, ticketsellors, Holiday Inn, Coors Light, Royal College of Nursing, Barclays Bank, Style Birmingham, the Birmingham Big Brum Buz, the kaleidoscope of colour, which is Birmingham Pride, meandered throughout the city centre as the procession snaked its way around the shopping areas until it

reached Hurst Street where the party really took-off. The weekend celebration of the LGBT community continued into the city’s well-established Gay Village, to the south of the city centre, with major
headline acts including chart toppers Basement Jaxx, Mark Dwayne and Gabrielle wowing the always effervescent and very proud crowd. Organiser Lawrence Barton said; “This was amazing. With our festival area in Hurst Street providing a huge main stage area, a dance marquee and a cabaret marquee they were big enclosed areas to cater for over 50,000 people who attend across the weekend with ticket sales distinctively up on last year when the festival raised £75,000 for charity.” ‘Defiance’ and ‘fun’ proved the essential mix for what was, yet again, an overwhelmingly successful Birmingham Pride.

ew research from A&O IT Group reveals that female business owners are nearly twice as likely (8.1 per cent) than male-run SMEs (4.6 per cent) to be unsatisfied with their current IT provider. The latest survey from the specialist SME and small business IT support service indicated that when it comes to IT loyalty, men are nearly twice as likely (41 per cent) to have worked with the
same service provider for over six years. Whilst this national review into the potential long-term impact of overlooking IT support found that a third (30 per cent) of SMEs had lost at least one full working day due to technology breakdowns, annual IT check-ups were less likely to be seen as a business priority by male respondents (24 per cent) compared to 15 per cent of female small business owners prioritising the task.

Despite slow-running computers and jamming printers proving the top two issues faced by all SMEs, freezing computers and forgotten passwords were the third and fourth most common complaints from women owners compared to crashing software and servers going down cited by men. The findings follow the recent launch of A&O IT’s specialist SME and small business IT support service into the UK market. The new technology enables SMEs to tap into the same levels of expertise and experience enjoyed by big businesses across the globe. Rod Moore, chair at A&O IT said: “What these results demonstrate is how important it is for any IT solution to take into account the differing priorities for each small business owner. “By introducing our tailor-made A&O IT for Small Business service we hope to make it even easier for British companies of all sizes to be able to access the latest technology. “Ultimately we want SMEs to be confident that their individual IT needs are being met so that they can focus even more of their attention to the profit-making side of their business.” The new A&O IT for Small Business service will be rolled out nationwide by the end of 2017.

The Impact of Formal Structures to Business Reputationality
B
usiness structures – single, dual or multiple – are often strategic and operational matters debated at both professional and lay level. The reason for this is quite obvious; when owners, directors and managers particularly, get themselves or their firms in trouble, the recurring theme of ‘formal structures’ can be contentious against the background of other system procedures associated with profit-making and not-forprofit entities. Business experts claim that having a formal business structure is dependent on the level of activities a company is engaged in, or with. Apart from building bridges or roads and or undertaking routine maintenance, a construction firm may also provide architectural services in designing, planning and surveying. Its structure may have a more technical outlook, than say a restaurant which is predominantly human resource-driven. Social enterprises have varied structures according to services portfolio; and yet organisational structures have a significant role to play in the way companies are perceived by allies and competitors alike. First, formal structures are important as they reflect the nature and type of organisations in operational mode. Some firms have dual legal status; profit and non-profit for the purposes of commercial and service-oriented ‘trading’. They are involved in either small contracts or in the case of medium-sized companies, compete for tenders that require relevant organisational structures, to meet both ‘Expression of Interest’ and actual submission of procurement documentation. Second, having a proper or relevant structure, enables organisations to be seen as having a commitment to commercial, fiduciary and corporate social responsibilities. It also enhances objectives-setting as an intrinsic part of organisations’ value chain. This ‘resource tool’ is also a pre-
requisite to measuring companies’ annual targets, also known as ‘outcomes and outputs’. These targets include operational, accounting and financial reporting, staffing, quality assurance, customer relations, marketing strategies, distribution and supply chains, other market linkages and stakeholders – internal and external. Third, structuring helps to define industry sector representation of firms including their modus operandi. Definitively, the creative industries sector is highly fragmented due to a range of key segments or sub-sectors. For instance, art is subdivided aspects of: fine art, visual art, the performing arts and other forms of creativity. When combined with digital technology, this sector can appear rather complex in industry classification terms. Fourth, a business structure provides owners, directors, managers, customers, distribution and supply chains, analysts including the media, as well as the wider publics, with a better understanding and appreciation of the type of operations that particular company is engaged in. effectively, the structure says much about the layout, operational activities, staffing, strategy and future outlook of firms. It also illustrates the extent to which industry linkages including partnerships and consortia arrangements, feature within and without firms. (Zikmund / D’Amico 2002)
Resources Matter
Resources are central to the nature and type of organisation structure of commercial, industrial and social firms as well. Aspects of resource capability and resource capacity must be considered within the organisational mix. Resource capability is about the honed abilities and talents and or competencies of staff, investors and various other stakeholders. Resource capacity is about a firm’s reliance or staying poweran attribute that offers considerable market or competitive advantage in the business of trade

and trading. Formal structures are vital because they affect the level of professional image and reputation of producers of goods and services. In tandem with this, structures portray an intelligent array of systems, procedures and arrangements which make for viable and sustainable operations. These structures include sole traders or proprietorship, partnership, corporation and limited liability companies, all of which carry different staffing levels –be they directorial, managerial, administrative, supervisory, technical and/or ancillary personnel. When such structures don’t exist, issues such as poor customer retention, loss of revenue, underinvestment in machinery and equipment, inadequate staff and low or poor market research, can all erode staff and general public trust in firms. Finally, formal business structures are requisite models for corporate governance and civic alignment. They have a positively desired effect, on the routine assessment, evaluation and revision of organisational systems and procedures that inform and guide strategic direction. Interestingly, the organisation and performance excellence [vivendi] is yet to be fully interrogated by contemporary business thinkers and other corporate practitioners. With commercial, industrial and social enterprises undergoing constant changes across the existing Standard Industry Classification (SIC) mode, having a definitive organisational structure with an inherent set of principles, values and a clear mission/vision, is perhaps the most fitting way to improve competition and superior advantage in the marketplace of ideas, goods and services.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE Cash is King, but for how much longer? Rapid growth in the use of contactless cards means cash will be overtaken as Britain’s most frequently used payment method by the end of 2018, according to a new report published by Payments UK, the trade association for the payments industry. This latest forecast still does not herald the demise of cash – even in ten years’ time it is still expected to make up 21% of all payments. Analysis carried out for UK Payment Markets 2017 forecasts that debit cards will become the most frequently used payment method in late 2018, three years earlier than previously predicted due in large part to the increasing popularity of contactless. There were nearly 2.9 billion contactless payments in the UK in 2016, more than 2.7 times more than in the previous year (1.1 billion). By 2018, when debit cards are forecast to overtake cash, 13.4 billion debit card payments are predicted, of which 4.6 billion (or one in three) are expected to be contactless.

eb development platform Wix reckons Facebook Live could become as popular a medium as TV for advertising - especially around major sports events. Wix is investing more heavily in live formats to show off its advertising around the Super Bowl, for example, as it believes the medium will become “as big as television”. The cloud-based web development platform advertised during the last Super Bowl, which attracts 120 million viewers and is classed as America’s biggest annual televised sports event. The brand launched a teaser for its Super Bowl ad for the first time via YouTube Live and Facebook Live, showing actors Jason Statham and Gal Gadot in a dramatic fight scene. The full campaign featured a series of short films, including the 30-second commercial for the Super Bowl, which has been shot by director Louis Leterrier of The Incredible Hulk and Clash of the Titans. Additional spots were released on the day of the New England Patriots match-up with Atlanta Falcond, which was accompanied by a global digital marketing campaign, with opportunities for viewers to engage with the content and win prizes. The brand decided to launch the ad through YouTube Live

and Facebook Live after previous activity showed high levels of engagement. “We saw that those two platforms are now very mature and are perfect for us to use our strengths as a brand to talk with our audiences directly,” the
brand’s chief marketing officer Omer Shai said. Shai has high hopes for live platforms, and believes they can become as important as TV for advertisers. “As an internet company, I’d hope so. It’s definitely going
to take some time to get to 120 million people [who now watch the Super Bowl on TV], but a growing number of people are watching it through digital live mediums,” he says.
Don’t Shoot the Messenger With the number of users rocketing, it’s estimated that by 2019 more than one-quarter of the world’s population will be using mobile messaging apps. Messaging apps have been around for several years now and in 2015 their user numbers overtook those of social media networks. However, news organizations are still grappling with how they can use these platforms to reach new audiences. The Asia-Pacific region is home to more than 50% of all chat app users worldwide, with more than 805 million consumers in 2016. China accounts for more than half of the region’s users. India, the second-largest market for messaging apps, is the fastest growing market, where chat app users are expected to grow by more than 24.0% this year to top 133 million. Cathy Boyle, principal analyst, mobile at eMarketer said; “One reason mobile messaging apps have taken off is because they are a cheaper alternative to SMS”

POLITICS WITH VIVEK RAJKHOWA
Election Time
How The Three Main Parties Manifestos Compare
T
wo weeks ago the three main parties in Britain and Northern Ireland released their manifes-
tos. It seems that the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and Labour all agree that the key areas of policy for a future government will be: the economy, housing, healthcare and Brexit. With just a week until the general election on the 8th June, here is a quick look at how the three main parties compare on the key policies.
Economy
On the economy, all three parties are in agreement that more needs to be done to encourage growth and investment. Whilst the Conservatives wish to lower taxes and improve corporate governance, the Liberal Democrats and Labour wish to provide proper scrutiny of big companies and ensure that those who can afford to are paying an appropriate amount of tax. This would be through a 1p increase in income tax as proposed by the Liberal Democrats, or a 5% increase in income tax for those earning over £80,000 in the case
of Labour. Both the Liberal Democrats and Labour would use the British Business Bank to provide investment and funds to small and developing businesses, whilst the Conservatives remained vague on how they wished to promote small business.
Brexit
Brexit sees all three parties taking completely different stances. The Conservatives are in favour of a ‘hard Brexit’ meaning leaving the EU completely including the customs union and the single market, taking back control of immigration and leaving the European Court of Justice. They would also replace or amend laws that were implemented when the UK was part of the EU through a Great Repeal Bill. Labour wishes to leave the EU but go for a ‘soft Brexit’ meaning that Britain remains part of the customs union and the single market, but prevents freedom of movement. Labour would also seek to guarantee the rights of European citizens currently living in Britain, as well as the rights of British citizens currently living in Europe.
The Liberal Democrats would remain in the single market, the customs union and allow for freedom of movement. They would also wish to hold a referendum on any deal signed between them and the EU, and allow the people the final say, giving them the chance to completely reject the deal and remain in the EU.
Healthcare & The NHS
Healthcare is a big issue for many voters within the country, and considering the ageing population this is no surprise. It is also no surprise therefore, that all three parties have promised significant investment into the NHS. The Conservatives have promised £8 billion of investment throughout the next Parliament, with £1 billion of that going toward Mental Health funding. The Liberal Democrats would use the 1p increase in income tax to help increase funding for the NHS and A and E, they would also set up a cross party consultation group to assess how the NHS is performing and whether it needs to adapt and change, and if so how that change might be implemented.
Labour would invest £30 billion into the NHS, and would invest heavily in GP services. They would also develop a Child’s Health Index to assess how healthy the children in the country are and how their health can be improved.
Housing
On housing, the three parties appear to vary between having clear cut and costed proposals and vagueness. The Conservatives promise to use the Homelessness Reduction Act to half homelessness by 2022, and to end homelessness com-
pletely by 2027. They would also seek to modernise the home buying process through increased emphasis on their ‘Help to Buy’ Scheme and increasing protection for renters through introducing procedures that make the renter the priority in law. The Liberal Democrats would seek to build 300,000 new houses by the end of the 2022 Parliament. They would use the Housing and Development bank to attract investment into the country for housing development. They would also introduce ‘Rent
to Buy’ schemes to ease people into the housing market. Labour would build 100,000 new houses using brownfield sites, 4,000 of which would be for those with a history of rough sleeping. They would also reintroduce housing benefit for 18-21 year olds. All three parties have provided fully detailed manifestos to go alongside these key policies, that are available on their websites. If you have not already done so, please do register to vote. And do remember to turn out on Thursday 8th June, to get the government you want!

Road Safety Initiative Hailed a Success
A
road safety initiative aimed at reducing child accidents and making road safety part of the national curriculum has been piloted successfully in Birmingham. Teachers at all 27 schools involved in the pilot praised the safety messages from lessons using a new early learning book featuring a family of traffic-cone characters for producing a 100% improvement in road safety awareness. The schools in the districts of Garrett’s Green, Hall Green, Hodge Hill and Yardley – locations identified in the 2016 Birmingham Road Safety Strategy as child accident ‘hot spots’ – all gave road safety lessons in which each pupil worked from their own copy of ‘The Conies: Walking to School Safely Journal’. The 40-page book was produced and delivered with a teacher guide, Hi-Vis snap bands and Conies pencils by Birmingham ‘not for profit’ organisation DriveSafe & StaySafe with the support of the Birmingham Community Safety Partnership. The landmark scheme was piloted between February and March this year to more than
3,300 children in 121 classes, the majority of which were Year 1 but also included a number in Year 2, reception and nursery. No less than 87% of all pupils totally or mostly understood the safety messages and concepts within the book, while 99% engaged positively with the characters, according to completed teacher questionnaires returned by all the schools. All the teachers in the pilot praised the initiative for making a 100% difference in improving road safety awareness and stated they would recommend it to others. The results have been announced in the 2017 United Nations Global Road Safety Week, which is timed to raise awareness of the 500 children who die on the world’s roads every day on bikes, in vehicles, as pedestrians and in walking to school. Chris Clements, Deputy Principal at Oasis Academy Blakenhale Infants, said: “This booklet has enabled me to teach a very serious subject in a fun way to keep children focused and interested, while the characters have armed children with thinking time about the dangers on the roads.”
Dawn Kenny, Learning Mentor at St Catherine of Siena Catholic Primary School, commented: “The children find the journal colourful and fun. They liked and engaged with The Conies straightaway.” Founder and Creator of The Coniesm Fay Goodman, who is also Managing Director of DriveSafe & StaySafe, said: “We created The Conies family as the new Safety Heroes for Kids - just as the Green Cross Code man and Tufty the Squirrel were in their day. “We were delighted that they won the attention of pupils and motivated them to focus on the road safety messages and lessons in the book. Our Walking to School Safely Journal was designed to cover road safety topics within six lessons and we made the first three lessons mandatory for evaluation in the pilot exercise, but such was the enthusiasm for the content that many schools said they completed all six lessons. We will now respond to teacher feedback by enhancing the presentation and content of the book to integrate those with learning difficulties that needed support to complete the programme.”
Memorial Unveiling Honours African & Caribbean Military Personnel
C
rowds into their thousands are expected in Windrush Square, Brixton, London, later this month to attend the unveiling of a memorial commemorating the two million African and Caribbean military servicemen and women who served in the two World Wars. The unveiling, set for Thursday, June 22, has been spearheaded by the Nubian Jak Community Trust, and has been hailed as Europe’s premier black cultural event this year. War veterans, in-service men and women and dignitaries including the Chief Executive of Lambeth Counil, Sean Harris, The Mayor of London, and Baroness Ros Howells - patron of the African and Caribbean Memorial are expected to be in attend-
ance. Alongside them, Chiefs of Defence Staff from Caribbean and African countries, High Commissioners from Commonwealth Nations, ambassadors, members of the House Lords, and Members of Parliament, have been invited to the unveiling. The general public are invited to Windrush Square for this unveiling as well. Jak Beula CEO of the Nubian Jak Community Trust, said: “More than 2 million African and Caribbean Military Servicemen and Servicewomen’s participated in WWI and WWII but have not been recognized for their contribution. “The unveiling of this memorial is to correct this historical omission and to ensure young people of African and Caribbean descent are
aware of the valuable input their forefathers had in the two world wars.” The ceremony is set to include a spectacular military salute, a dazzling display of the flags, traditional African and Caribbean music and dance, commemorative tributes by dignitaries, as well as a vivid parade that includes Tambu Bambou Masqueraders, carnival puppets and stilt walkers. The memorial, which is designed in the shape of two 6ft Obelisks, housed on a 10.5ft Pyramidal plinth with a combined weight of just under 5 tonnes, is being unveiled to ensure the contribution of African and Caribbean countries and people to WWI and WWII is known and identified respectfully and globally.

irmingham City University was named Nurse Education Provider of the Year for post-registration courses at this year’s Student Nursing Times Awards. The Nurse Education Provider of the Year (post-registration) category recognises outstanding educational institutions that offer courses to develop the leadership, management and clinical skills of qualified nurses, and which provide an educational environment that nurtures and develops the talent of qualified nurses. On presenting the award - at the London Hilton on Park Lane - the judges commented: “Outstanding support, staff that are tirelessly working to achieve the best for their students, excellent resources and a fabulous environment were comments that were given over and over again by students who could not speak highly enough of this University.” The Student Nursing Times Awards, now in its sixth year, aims to celebrate the drive and commitment of those who go the extra mile, and are the only awards to celebrate
the very best in student nurses and nurse education. This year Birmingham City University received a total of 10 nominations, including those for Student Nurse of the Year, for Adult, Child and Mental Health Nursing; Student Placement of the Year; and Outstanding Contribution to Student Affairs. Carol Doyle, Head of School for Nursing and Midwifery at Birmingham City University, said: “I am delighted that the post qualifying health care department has won such a prestigious national award. LEADERSHIP EXCELLENCE WITH DR NESLYN WATSON-DRUée CBE FRCN FCGI
Leadership Excellence
with Dr Neslyn Watson-Druée CBE FRCN FCGI
Are You Building Your Emotional Capital? T he primary role of a leader is to create emotional wealth for competitive advant-
age. When the tools of emotional intelligence are in the hands of leaders, the tools open the doors to the remarkable, creative entrepreneurial energy that exists in all genuine leaders. Leadership is central to unleashing the best performance. Jim Collins book – Good to Great cites three elements: 1. Leadership is critical 2. The right people 3. Values – a set of values which people are corporate about, the values that define corporate success Effective communication is 20% of what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know. - Jim Rohn Your emotional capital is crucial to your success. The relationship between success and emotional intelligence has indicated that star performers (people who outperform their peers) score significantly higher on emotional self-awareness, self-actualisation, empathy, inter-personal relationships, flexibility, problem-solving and stress management. Here follow five components of emotional intelligence at
work: 1. Self-awareness – your ability to recognise and understand your moods, emotions and what is driving you as well as their effect on the people around you and with whom you communicate. 2. Self-regulation – otherwise known as self control is your ability to control and redirect disruptive impulses and moods with reference to yourself as well as others.
3. Self-actualisation – this is sometimes referred to as motivation. This relates to your passion to work for reasons that go beyond money and status. 4. Empathy – Your ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people. 5. Relationship skills - this is a social skill which relates to your proficiency in managing relationships and building networks. Emotional intelligence has
been called a soft skill, but research shows that it delivers bottom-line business results. "Research has confirmed that emotionally intelligent leaders are indeed more successful than their less emotionally intelligent peers." Self-awareness lies at the core of emotional intelligence and no truly effective leader operates without self-awareness. Self-awareness was highlighted by the Harvard Business Review in an article entitled: “Breakthrough Ideas for Tomorrow’s Business Agenda.” The article stated, “Executives who fail to develop self-awareness risk falling into an emotionally deadening routine that threatens their true selves. Indeed a reluctance to explore your inner landscape not only weakens your own motivation but can also corrode your ability to inspire others. Martyn Newman in his book “Emotional Capitalists the New Leaders refers to today’s top executives as, "emotional capitalists." Emotional Capitalists score high on self-reliance, assertiveness and optimism. In other words, high performing leaders are self-directed, they take responsibility for themselves, possess an independence of mind in managing their thoughts and values. High performing leaders are able to express their thoughts and feelings in a non-aggressive way; are open to sensing opportunities; possess the ability to maintain a positive approach and remain persistent even in the face of major challenges. In terms of business, the three competencies: self-reliance, assertiveness and optimism enable a person to: model self-assured behaviour, communicate a clear view of the organisation’s vision and direction, inspire the confidence of others and deal with setbacks in a positive, constructive way. Research that looked at the predictors of success in the workplace across hundreds of occupations found the one factor of emotional intelligence that consistently showed up, al-
most regardless of job type was self-actualisation. According to psychologist Steven Stein, there are two components to self-actualisation as a skill. The first involves a person having a passion for what she or he does; the second component involves being well-rounded. In the process of self-actualising a leader builds emotional capital by producing his or her best work, this in turn enables others to believe that they can produce their best, too. Another factor that differentiates high performing leaders from the rest is their score on self- confidence. Effective leaders have high degree of self-confidence. Self-confidence is built on the twin emotions of self-liking and self-competence and it determines the quality of a person’s relationship. We build human capital by investing in people to create value. Being able to bring out the best in people is largely based on the expectations we have of them. Leaders high in empathy understand the task their people must perform and sense the feelings, needs and perspectives of others. Everyone’s emotional intel-
ligence needs are different and different jobs require different levels of emotional intelligence. Jobs even require different aspects of emotional intelligence – for instance, if one works in a job which requires a high level of contact with other people, one may need more of an ability to manage emotions and deal with human dynamics and stresses. Neslyn.com offers systematic assessment of 10 Components of Emotional Capital and their applications to leadership. This system builds on the knowledge that emotional intelligence is made up of flexible skills that can be learned. The Emotional Capital Leadership System is a powerful, proven, seven-step process that leverages these seven conditions to maximise the development of emotional intelligence in leaders.

Ariana Grande & Friends One Love Manchester Concert
F
ollowing the mindless tragedy in Manchester, singer Ariana Grande confirmed that she would return to the city to host a special concert to remember the deceased and injured victims of the bomb attack. The star asked acts including Pharrell Williams, Take That, Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Usher, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Niall Horan to perform at the ‘One Love Manchester’ concert at the Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Multi-award winning giants Black Eyed Peas also joined Ariana’s One Love benefit concert to raise funds for the victims of Manchester terror attack. The chart-topping group including rappers Will.i.Am, apl.de.ap, Taboo and singer Fergie confirmed their involvement by posting a tweet saying: “One world, one love. Honored to join @ArianaGrande in honoring the victims and their families in Manchester.” Twenty-two people died in the
attack after Ariana performed at the Manchester Arena with over 100 injured and she offered fans who were at the her show free tickets to the tribute gig. Alongside the list of worldwide stars pupils from the Manchesterbased Parrs Wood High School choir were also confirmed to be performing. Following the attack they recorded a cover of Ariana’s song ‘My Everything’ to raise money for victims, the singer herself performing the song with the children from the East Didsbury school. Immediately after the announcement Grande sent a tweet with details of the gig, with the One Love logo featuring the bunny ears she is known for wearing. Her manager Scooter Braun also tweeted, with the message: “We stand with you.” She told her 46.4m Twitter followers: “I don’t want to go the rest of the year without being able to see and hold and uplift my fans, the same way they continue to up-
lift me. “Our response to this violence must be to come closer together, to help each other, to love more, to sing louder and to live more kindly and generously than we did before. “I’ll be returning to the incredibly brave city of Manchester to spend time with my fans and to have a benefit concert in honour of and to raise money for the victims and their families.”
The Old Trafford venue’s 50,000 capacity meant an instant sell-out with the gig broadcast on BBC One and BBC Radio with proceeds going to the ‘We Love Manchester’ emergency fund, which was set up by Manchester City Council, in conjunction with the British Red Cross with organisers expecting at least £2m to be raised from the event.
Dancehall King Frankie Paul
A
leading light in reggae music, in general, during the 1980s and 90s and a key figure in Jamaica’s hugely popular dancehall scene, Frankie Paul was a prolific recording artist with dozens of albums to his name and a global profile enhanced by endless touring. His rich tone and impressive vocal range put him in the vanguard of a revolution that essentially ditched roots reggae’s interest in social, political or religious matters, turning instead to more down-to-earth or downright topics and alluring but uncomplicated love songs. Born almost blind, he was dubbed 'The Jamaican Stevie Wonder' and it was after meeting the Motown legend that Wonder urged him to be a singer. Paul’s first single ‘African Princess’ was released in 1980, when he was only 15. He became a global star with hits like ‘Worries In the Dance,’ ‘Pass the Ku Shung Peng,’ ‘Tidal Wave,’ ‘Cassanova’ and ‘Sarah.’ Writing on Twitter, DJ David Rodigan, said; "His incomparable voice and songs are his legacy." Singer Lonesome said; “He will be sadly missed by us all – family, friends, colleagues and thousands of fans around the world.” Dogged by ill health in his later years, he was 51 when he passed.

NIGERIA SPECIAL REPORT
In support of the Olojo Festival, Ile-Ife
Bound For Ile-Ife l CEO and Editor-In-Chief Marcia McLaughlin in Abuja
T
he Phoenix Newspaper was officially invited to have an audience with the His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, and to become the official media partner for the Olojo Festival which takes place in the second week of October. In preparation for this inaugral visit we landed at Lagos International Airport. For those of you who have travelled to Nigeria, I need not explain how different the arrival experience is so lets move on. We stayed at a hotel in Central Lagos for two nights and took the opportunity to experience the lifestyle of the people of Lagos. The one thing that stood out most was the traffic. If you think that London traffic or indeed the
traffic in Manhatten is heavy, you ain’t seen nothing yet! However, amongst all this moving traffic, there is booming business, international trade, foreign investments and opportunities to boot. What we loved most was driving in and out of the traffic, and seeing the street traders with everything and anything to sell, stacked on their heads. From peanuts to mangos, to apples, to grapes and anything else that you would expect to find in a local supermarket. This was the start of my tour to discover ‘The Source’ which is known as Ile-Ife, where the statue of Oduduwa is (left). Take a look at my journey as it starts unfolding.

She committed to projecting its culture and exposing the town to the international community for tourist purposes which will in turn bring about big commercial activities within the entire State. She also explained to the ooni of Ile-Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, about The Phoenix Newspaper Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation Ceremony, which she said was a time set aside to recognise achievers in their diverse fields of endeavors. These individuals and corporate bodies, who have excelled themselves within their communities by making an impact and putting smiles on faces of the less privileged.by providing social community development projects. She further explained that the impact of The Phoenix Newspaper Gala Awards will spur and motivate these individuals and corporate bodies into doing more and giving back to society. She gladly extended the invit-
ation to the event and requested His Imperial Majesty to be the Guest of Honour at the event on the 2nd of December 2017. In a swift reaction, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi welcomed the CEO and Editor In Chief to Nigeria and assured her, that he is highly delighted to have her in his palace. He applauded her vision and passion for positivity, and noted that the Olojo Festival, which The Phoenix Newspaper is the appointed Official Media Partner for, is a very spiritual occasion. The Ooni requested that the CEO and Editor In Chief be taken round to see the realities for herself which included their ancestral heritage sites. He also stated that during the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, it was not an apple which they ate, but a nut and assured the CEO that a sample of that particular nut will be given to her. The Ooni further stated that the nuts are of two types, which were greenish and oxblood in colour but noted that Eve ate

al Visit the oxblood coloured one, while Adam ate the greenish one. His Majesty pointed out that the story of the Garden of Eden in the Bible and the Quran were true, but stated that the male of the creation was in the east while the female was in the west. The forbidden fruit wasn’t an apple he stated again, “oberege, oberefe’’, he said. The nuts are spiritual and powerful, and he noted that there was a relationship between the snake and the nut. The nut was what caused Eve to start menstruating and Adam to start producing semen, which in turn gave rise to mankinds reproduction on earth today. He emphasised that all mankind are the same, and as such there should be no discrimination, no matter your colour. In a final thought he noted that the launch of The Phoenix Nigeria is a welcome one and promised to be part of such a positive endeavour, promising to give all necessary support. He gave his word, “To be
part of the Phoenix Newspaper Awards Night in December, and to send through an Official Invitation with the date.” Before parting ways at the end of the audience, The Phoenix Newspaper presented His Majesty with a personalised poem from Dave Wilkes of Just Divine, a framed copy of the front cover of the recent edition of the newspaper, on which the Ooni was featured, and a photo collage of the Phoenix Newspaper team along with other gifts. The Ooni read the poem on the spot and expressed his delight and desire to meet the poet, and was grateful for all of the gifts he received. In conclusion the CEO and Editor in Chief thanked the Ooni of Ile-Ife for the audience and thanked all the Chiefs for their kind and warm reception, in particular Oba Osogun for his hospitality in taking care of The Phoenix team during their stay, and Chief Amlak who was the UK pathfinder and negotiator for the trip.

ecords of Yoruba mythology state that Olodumare, the Supreme God, ordered Obatala to create the earth, but on his way he found palm wine which he drank and became intoxicated. These acts made the younger brother of the latter, Oduduwa, take the three items of creation from him, and climb down from the heavens on a chain. He then threw a handful of earth on the primordial ocean, and put a cockerel on it so that it would scatter the earth, thus creating the land on which Ile Ife would be built. Oduduwa planted a palm nut in a hole in the newly formed land and from there sprang a great tree with sixteen branches, a symbolic representation of the clans of the early Ife
city-state. The usurpation of creation by Oduduwa gave rise to the everlasting conflict between him and his elder brother Obatala, which is still re-enacted in the modern era by the cult groups of the two clans during the Itapa New Year festival. On account of his creation of the world Oduduwa became the ancestor of the first divine king of the Yoruba. Obatala is believed to have created the first Yoruba people out of clay. The meaning of the word “ife” in Yoruba is “expansion”; “Ile-Ife” is therefore in reference to the myth of origin “The Land of Expansion”. Ile-Ife is the cradle of the Yorubas, the city of survivors, and the spiritual seat of the Yorubas, where the dawn of the day was first experienced, the source, the head of the whole universe, the land of the most ancient day, the home of divinities is to the people of Ife “Ilurun” i.e Gate-
way to heaven. The history of Ife can also be chronologically divided into three periods: The first Ife was known as Ife Oodaye, Ile Owuro, Ibiti Oju Ti Mo, that is, ‘The Land of most Ancient Days where the Dawn of the Day was first experienced’. The second Ife was called Ife Ooyelagbo, that is, the ‘City of the Survivors’. Tradition maintains that the second Ife lasted until the arrival of some strangers who entered the city of Ile-Ife from the “East”. An attempt made by the strangers to seize power from the aborigines on the land led to a bloody struggle between the strangers led by the Oduduwa on one hand and the aborigines led by Obatala, eventually Oduduwa and his groups won the war. The third Ife is called Ile-Ife founded with the arrival of Oduduwa and his groups. It is believed that Oduduwa, the founder of the Yoruba race emerged after the deluge. He, (Oduduwa), and his followers descended on to dry land by means of chain ropes from their life boat (hence the saying Oduduwa afi won ron).

The Ooni of Ife is believed to be direct descent from Oduduwa and is ranked first among the Yoruba kings. He is considered the 401st spirit (Orisha) and is the only one who speaks. The Royal dynasty of Ife traces its origin back to the founding of the city more than two thousand years ago.
ry of Ile-Ife The 51st Ooni, of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II ascended to the throne in December 2015. Prominent amongst the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s company of Royal Obas, he is regarded as the Chief custodian and Chief Priest of the holy city for all Yorubas. Structures of the palace of Ooni of Ife are built with authentic enameled bricks, with artistic porcelain tiles with lots of other ornaments visible for all to see. Every day in Ile-Ife is generally known as festival day as the traditional worshipers celebrate the festive exclusion of one day in a year. The king is expected to appear in public during the Olojo Festival usually done once a year, which is why the Phoenix Newspaper has been invited as the official media partners.
THE FUTURE WORLD TOURIST CENTRE
Ile Ife, also known as Ife, is an ancient Yoruba city in the southwestern part of Nigeria. Ile Ife is said to be dated back around 500 B.C. when it was founded and is the oldest Yoruba city. It is presently part of Osun State and has an estimated population of 501,000 people. The Phoenix team led by the editor in-chief / Managing Director, Marcia McLaughlin, had a pleasant and smooth trip. Driving from Lagos to Ile-Ife was something new and exciting as she saw things that were new to her. Invited by the Ooni of Ile-Ife, His Imperial Majesty Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II as the official
media partners to the acclaimed Olojo festival. Ile-Ife, known as a land of Deities have various shrines with different heads as overseer and custodian of its values and traditions to maintain. It is yet to be discovered by the international world, but history has it that Africa and the world at large emanated from Ile-Ife, as facts relating to these claims were physically shown to the Phoenix team, and they are quite amazing. No wonder the Queen of England during the colonial days has left her mark as a sign of her presence and honor to what she meets on ground. Shown round by one of the shrine heads, Oba Osogun, who happens to be the custodian of the God of Iron in the company of the Traditional Secretary of the Ooni of Ile-Ife made it clear with facts that Ile-Ife is a town that is yet to be discovered by the International world.
Emphasizing the efforts of the past Ooni of Ile-Ife Oba Sijuwade Okunade who during his days as the imperial leader of Ife led delegates of the Ile-Ife kingdom in search of ancient materials taken away from Ife during the British colonial days of which lots of such items were discovered in the British Museum in London. The significance was disclosed to the custodians and others present, of which the Ile-Ife Kingdom claimed was replicated with the duplicate left in Ile-Ife. The meanings and explanations were given by the then Ooni of IleIfe on the 3rd of May 2010 and well applauded by the British Museum. This rich history is the reason why the current Ooni of Ife is inviting people to attend the Olojo Festival in October and experience where it all began at The Source.

O
ba Osogun invited The Phoenix Newspaper to a very special location that he is the custodial master of, where he expressed the importance of the Olojo Festival and the part that the whole community will play on that day. In the video footage, he explained in depth the importance of
knowing ‘The Source’ in keeping with the ancient traditions and the understanding of where Ile-Ife fits in the grand scheme of things; in effect, where it all began. We wrote about Oba Osogun in The Phoenix Newspaper when he was installed in his post as Oba Osogun. What is important about Osoguns position is that he is young, which means that the tradition can
be kept alive and be brought into the 21st Century. This will give people of all nationalities and cultures a greater understanding of this tradition and a way of connecting people to ‘The Source’. During the visit, Oba Osogun paid special attention in highlighting the many fundraising activities that they are planning to undertake to help with education and other
social endeavours. His vision mirrors that of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, and his youthful energy is demonstrated every day as he is regularly seen handing out money to individuals, mothers and children in the streets of Ile-Ife. Likewise, we were amazed at the level of respect, support and worship that is afforded to him as Oba Osogun from all of the people in Ile-Ife on every step of his journey. l

The Phoenix Lands In Nigeria
I
t was a great moment to have the Editor in Chief of The Phoenix Newspaper in Nigeria all the way from Birmingham, UK, full of excitement. As this was her first visit in Nigeria; the strong and energetic Editor in Chief could not hide her joy and happiness to be in the country. On arrival at the airport in Lagos she was welcomed with a warm atmosphere with all eyes on her as she has features different from what is seen around. The soft spoken young lady with the Queens accent was unable to hide her identity as she spoke. Invited by the Ooni of Ile-Ife in Osun state Nigeria, her visit was in connection with preparations for the forthcoming Olojo Festival. The Olojo Festival is an annual event in Osun State, Nigeria usually around October. Marcia was received by Oba Osogun, accompanied by the International Consultant Mazi A. C. Okoro and The Phoenix Newspaper’s own African correspondent Mr. Alex Emeka Akwaeze at the Lagos terminal. Tired and exhausted after a long flight, she was taken to KFC Nigeria to do what Nigerians call ‘man must walk and then a place to lay her head’. Before she got there though she did some street dance, and she did the street dance professionally too! Nigeria is a place of new discoveries, if you want to know what this street dance is all about, be prepared to visit the Olojo Festival, perhaps the best teacher is by experience. Welcomed by the light black out, she screamed and was frightened but thank God she knows where she was coming to. Nigeria is a country where the power supply is unpredictable and uncertain in some areas, but thanks to God almighty her candle stick was there to help out. The soundproofed generator started up with no noise to disturb her sleep, but the mosquitos weren’t as hospitable. They were there to welcome her with just few bites, with which her body can accommodate. Oba Osogun and Mazi A.C. Okoro of De-Infinite Consults Limited greeted each other with respect as Osogun introduced Mr Mazi to Civil Engineers from Schematics Developers Limited.
Travelling along Lagos road was fun and interesting, lots of new scenes, like the real African women who put their babies on their backs tied with cloths. There was lots of street hocking of different commodities, and passengers hanging on the back of buses all in the bid to get to their destination. Barring heavy traffic jam and insufficient transport facilities and then finally in Ile-Ife where she was hosted by the Ooni and shown round the various tourist centres.

And Finally...
I
feel that when you write about people, it is very important that you get to know them, and one of the ways in which I engage with my readers is to give them a view of my experience, first hand. Nigeria, for me, brings about a very exciting array of opportunities for anyone wanting to start a business or introduce new ideas to a receptive and open minded audience. My visit to Ile-Ife was one of the most emotional, inspirational and enlightening experiences I’ve ever had. My first day was the day that I met my
little friend who was only 1 year and 6 months old walking towards me with money in hand with the red dirt on her feet to buy water for her mother. The second was the Traditional Tour with Oba Osogun, and the final day and creme de la creme, meeting with the Ooni of Ife himself. The people of Ile-Ife have left a tangible mark of inspiration with their innovation, creativity and drive to achieve and to better themselves against all odds. I would like to thank Emeka Alex Akwaeze, our Africa Correspondent for the past four years with The Phoenix Newspaper UK. He is a massive support to the team, and is now the Oper-
ations Director for the Phoenix Nigeria magazine. He will also hold the position of Assistant Editor in the Phoenix Nigeria magazine. I’d also like to thank Mr Mazi A C Okoro, Special Consultant to the entire team for his patience and experience in business affairs. I want to thank Oba Osogun for his hospitality and for giving The Phoenix Newspaper the opportunity to be the Official Media Partners to the Olojo Festival. We admire his vision in support of his people and traditions. It puts life into perspective for me, the respect, love, and rich culture of finding out The Source - Marcia McLaughlin

onsistently, for 50 years, hundreds of thousands of revelers have pounded the streets of the West Yorkshire city – all to make sure that they were there, at the oldest carnival still in existence in Europe. The West Indian Carnival in Leeds remains the staple diet for the heady August Bank Holiday celebration of music, food and culture which, as always, will culminate in its usual kaleidoscope of colour, thumping beats and the world of smiles and laughter as it parades through Chapeltown and Harehills before taking over Potternewton Park in the city. It will prove to be deserved validation for its founding father, Arthur France, who thought-up the idea for a carnival after being homesick for his native home of St Kitts and Nevis, in the Caribbean back in 1967. 50 years on and even more people – from further afield internationally – are converging onto Leeds with France, head of the organising committee, saying: "When you come to carnival it is electric, so many things going on, beautiful costumes, beautiful colours, beautiful music, so we’re looking forward to you joining us for what will be our biggest and best celebrations yet as we look forward 50 golden years of Leeds’ West Indian Carnival." The first in the UK to incorporate the three essential elements of authentic West Indian carnival – costumes, music and a masquerade procession, again it will mark the city’s validation of its cultural cohesion when it comes to outdoor celebrations for all – making this Europe’s longest running Caribbean carnival parade ever.

esi Moves - the award-winning youth programme celebrating streetwise South Asian sounds and styles - is back this summer as part of UTSAV: the Year of South Asian Culture. How do young Brummies of South Asian descent feel about the way their city is depicted in the national media? How can they respond creatively when ex-EDL frontman Tommy Robinson and others make a film about the ‘Islamification of Birmingham’ in Sparkbrook? How do they feel about Brexit? About the opportunity to be creative in Birmingham? Desi Moves launched with two Q&A’s featuring Birmingham’s top Grime artists; Dapz On The Map and Jaykae in Aston and Sparkbrook. Dapz On The Map gave a surprise performance of a track from his new EP, ‘Champion Champion’. BBC-playlisted Jaykae discussed his online public debate with Tommy Robinson, and when he took all his fans out for a Nandos meal after a gig. Desi Moves is now moving into a season of no-cost mu-

Global Superstars Headlining F1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2017
T
wo of the world’s most iconic musical acts will perform two incredible backto-back concerts at the 2017 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, on Saturday evening, June 24, with one of the defining voices of her generation, Nicole Scherzinger, taking to the Main Stage at Baku City Circuit (BCC) during the midpoint of the second successive F1 race weekend to be hosted in Baku. She will then be followed by none other than one of the most successful groups in music history, The Black Eyed Peas, to deliver a stunning night of worldclass music and entertainment at Formula 1’s newest street circuit. Nicole, one of the world’s most celebrated artists, will take to the stage first in Baku after the Qualifying session has ended on track. The Grammy-nominated triple threat has scored #1 singles on both sides of the Atlantic, selling 37 million singles worldwide
- 16 million records as a solo artist and a staggering 54 million albums as the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, making them one of the best-selling girl groups ever. Outside of her work in the entertainment industry, the X Factor judge is an Ambassador for UNICEF and a Global Ambassador for the Special Olympics. She will be followed by one of the best-selling, most popular and most innovative groups of all time - The Black Eyed Peas – who will deliver one of their spectacular live shows to close out the night. In an era of an ever-changing music industry they have transformed themselves from a beloved backpack rap troop from the West Coast Underground into fully-fledged, massive global superstars whose music can be heard in any country around the world. They’ve created albums that are more innovative than the last; which has translated into
each new album being more popular than the last. And in following this pattern, they have released their sixth full-length album, ‘The Beginning.’ It follows on the heels of 2009’s ‘The E.N.D.,’ the group’s most popular and creative album to date – and one that reaffirmed their singular status as global music icons. ‘The E.N.D.’ sold more than 11 million copies worldwide and entered the Billboard Top 200 Chart at #1, yielding 5 Top 10 singles (the first album to do so in 20 years), spent an entire year in the Billboard Top 200 Chart, and earned the group 3 new Grammy Awards, for a total of six Grammy Awards they’ve won. In all, they’ve sold 29 million records worldwide (plus over 30-million digital tracks). They’ve sold over 3-million tickets and headlined over 300 different tour dates in 29 different countries. Speaking after both acts were confirmed, BCC Executive Dir-
ector, Arif Rahimov, said: “It is hard to fully express just how delighted and honoured we are to welcome two of the most successful global music acts of all time to Baku. Both The Black Eyed Peas and Nicole Scherzinger have proven themselves time and again to belong to that very elite group of performers who transcend ordinary expectations of what an artist can and shouldB17_A5_flyer.pdf be. 1 “Music and Formula 1 have

A segment of his music video for ‘No Type,’ which features Krept and Konan, appeared online, to which Zayn blamed Naughty Boy for releasing. Lashing out at the music producer, he posted; “@NaughtyBoyMusic you fat joke stop pretending we’re friends no one knows you. ~ Zayn Malik” “Someone learned how to upload a video… maybe now he should learn how to use logic ha you ain’t s**t but a faker. ~ Zayn Malik” Record producer and songwriter, Naughty Boy responded by saying, “I can deal with what he said, but he knows the hate I’ve had to endure for him is the bit that upset me,” he explained. “Three months ago he was calling me his best friend at the Asian Awards so it’s a bit sad. Krept called him and explained that I had nothing to do with [the music video leak].” “He has got a new manager and sometimes things get interfered with,” he added.

Alien: Covenant
B
ound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, members of the colony ship known as “Covenant” discover what they think to be an uncharted paradise, capable of sustaining life, with the perfect conditions for their colonisation mission. When a small team is sent to the surface for reconnaissance, they soon come to realise that this beautiful world is actually a dark and dangerous place that houses a hostile extra-terrestrial life form that forces the crew into a deadly fight for survival. In 2012, Ridley Scott made his grand return to the science-fiction genre for the first time since directing Blade Runner (1982) in order to helm Prometheus; a film that would tell an original story, while also acting as a prequel to Ridley Scott’s very own Alien (1979), one of the greatest science-fiction films of all time. Unfortunately, many fans seemed to be left with a bad taste in their mouths, feeling that Prometheus was too much of a departure from what an Alien movie

“should be”. However, that was the whole point - Prometheus wasn't meant to be an Alien movie, but more a companion piece that expanded upon the universe established way back in 1979. Despite the mixed reception, one thing was certain; Ridley Scott has more stories he wants to tell within the universe he created all those years ago, and that is an exciting prospect for all Alien fans. With Alien: Covenant, Scott has made somewhat of a hybrid, which is equal parts Prometheus and Alien, which is also something that ties in beautifully with certain story elements involving the parasitical alien life form. One cannot help but think Scott may have felt forced to make a movie closer to Alien after the criticism he received for Prometheus, and its difficult not to imagine what Covenant may have been in a world full of people who loved Prometheus; but thats a discussion for some other time. For those of you who did love Prometheus, fear not! Ridley Scott has not abandoned it, not by
a long shot. Do not let the title fool you Alien: Covenant is very much a sequel to Prometheus, and features some excellent call backs and expansions on the questions left unanswered, all while exploring a dark and grungy new world. The locations and sets on display in Alien: Covenant are breathtaking, and Ridley Scott, along with his long-time cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, capture everything beautifully. Whether you like the movie or not, you cannot deny that Covenant is exquisite to look at. Even the horrific violence that comes in to play later in the movie has something of a gruesome majesty to it. A ballet of blood. Ridley Scott was made for science-fiction. Michael Fassbender returns as David, the synthetic android from Prometheus, while also playing the resident android of the Covenant ship, Walter. That’s right - you get double Fassbender for the price of one ticket. That alone is worth your money. There is also an excellent sup-

All of the main cast deliver excellent performances, but Fassbender in-particular is exquisite, and the scenes between David and Walter are nothing short of mesmerising. Unfortunately, the rest of the cast are faceless, interchangeable drones who we never really get to know or care about. They are literally there to be the first ones to be killed and none of it really matters much to the audience. Covenant could have benefited from an extra scene or two, showing the crew interact with one another and highlighting the close relationships many of them share so that, when things start going wrong, the audience actually care. This is something that was done remarkably well in both Alien and Aliens, but its an element that seems lost in Covenant, and its

However, one of the main issues with Alien: Covenant (and Prometheus), and perhaps this is just a personal one, is that the further this particular universe is explored, and the more certain things are explained, the less frightening it all becomes. Part of what made Alien (1979) so effective was that we had no idea what was going on. We experience everything from the point of view of the crew and we know as much as they do. We find the eggs. We see our friends die. We come face to face with a savage and seemingly unbeatable creature. Part of what made Aliens (1986) so effective was taking everything we discovered in the first movie, and multiplying it. We know how terrifying and dangerous one Xenomorph can be, so they throw hundreds of them at us. With Prometheus and Alien: Covenant asking bigger questions and slowly exploring the origins of these creatures, one can’t help but feel that it takes some of their mystique away and makes them less frightening. When Darth Vader removes his helmet at the end of Return of the Jedi and you discover he's nothing more than a sad, lonely, broken old man, suddenly, you aren't afraid of him anymore and this is something that appears to be happening in these new instalments. Ridley Scott is retroactively making his universe less frightening. More interesting and thought-provoking, sure, but less frightening nonetheless. Though, this isn’t necessarily a criticism as Scott is merely taking the franchise in its next, logical step, and the final thirty minutes of Covenant are absolutely fantastic and it has a doozy of an ending that promises big things if we get another sequel. It may have it’s issues, but Alien: Covenant sits comfortably as the third best movie in the franchise. It takes everything that worked about Prometheus - the big questions about creation and the purpose of life - combines it with the visceral horror of Alien, adds a sprinkle of the fast and furious action of Aliens and the resulting movie is an uneven, but thoroughly enjoyable experience.

he Ferrari Museum of Maranello has opened its new exhibition spaces and two exhibitions - "Under the Skin" and "Infinite Red" - in the presence of President and CEO of Ferrari Sergio Marchionne, Vice President Piero Ferrari, Director of the London Design Museum Deyan Sudjic and Mayor of Maranello Massimiliano Morini. The Ferrari Museums enjoyed a record year in 2016 with more than 478,000 visitors, of whom 344,000 came to Maranello. So also in order to cope with a growing public, the Museum's spaces have been extended by more than 600 square metres to a total of 4,100 square metres, creating a new wing that connects to the existing structure by means of a great continuous glass facade, and a new museum itinerary. In addition, a multifunctional space of about 300 square metres has been built, which can host up to 250 people for events, conventions and educational activities. The refreshments area and the Ferrari Store are also completely new. Two new exhibitions, "Under the Skin" and "Infinite Red", celebrate Ferrari on its 70th anniversary. The former recalls the founder and the evolution of the company's innovation and style, while the latter covers the company's history through its models.

2018 Models set to Hit Showrooms Worldwide
W
ith the seasonal auto shows in preparation, many of the 2018 models are set to arrive in dealerships – locally, nationally and worldwide. The car industry is an anomaly as it doesn't follow the regular calendar - models labeled 2018 can arrive anytime after 2017 starts, which means that some 2018 models will be all-new, whilst others will be redesigns of existing vehicles. There are plenty of models to chew on as automakers plan to revamp significant mainstream models like the Toyota Camry and Honda Odyssey, while offering up some tasty all-new entries like the Kia Stinger sport sedan and Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV. So the coming array of auto shows will enable consumers to explore and experience what’s ‘new’ for the motor industry’s own coming year.
Late Easter Blamed for Drop in UK Car Figures
late Easter was to blame for the drop in the number of cars made in the UK according to the UK's industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. A fall of almost a fifth in April with 122,116 cars built - an 18% fall - compared with the same month last year. Strikes at three BMW plants in the UK - in a row over pensions - also affected the figures. That said, the SMMT did state
MOTORING
that the underlying picture remained "strong," with output up 1% for the year to date. 593,796 cars were made in the first four months of the year - the highest number for the period since 2000. Overseas buyers have helped to lift the market, with demand up 3.5%, which has helped to offset a 7% drop in demand from the UK. SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes, said: "The significant fall in car production is due to the later Easter bank holiday week-
end meaning a reduced number of active production days. However, car manufacturing in the UK remains in good health especially with new models due to be going into UK production very soon. To sustain future growth and investment into our industry and supply chain, the government has to safeguard the conditions that have made us globally competitive, keeping us open and trading and delivering an ambitious industrial strategy."

Recently featured in Huffington Post as an artist of Zimbabwean descent, meet the witty and humble - Nego True. Our telephone conversation began with Nego catching the W15 bus, setting out for a busy day.
foresight, I guess I was lucky blessed.
Are you working on any projects at the moment?
“No Crowns” my EP which will be released this year. I am also working on another tour – an International Tour.
What are some of your most memorable projects to date?
Who is Nego True?
Spoken word artist, music artist, speaker and newly established Author.
Can you remember when we first met?
I think we met before we officially met (laughs). We went to the same primary school, we also went to a young people’s Christian music events night called Connect Café in 2008. We both lost our friend Cj in 2009 and in 2012 we recorded a Sing For Tomorrow remix by Sneakbo and two years later worked on a song called Where’s Ty? for another friend who was also killed. Most recently, we performed at Leyton Carnival in Waltham Forest!
How long have you been writing and performing?
I started writing in 2012 and started releasing in 2012. I began writing about the things happening in my family and in the area that I live in. One day, I went to a park with
my girlfriend at the time, we jumped over the gates as it was late, I ended up disappearing and found myself sitting down writing. I wrote my first poem entitled RIP CJ. The next day I went to CJ’s memorial and his mum asked me to speak, I said no at first but I had to read the poem. I was surprised by the reaction, people could relate to the poem and they appreciated it. That’s where it all started. It was almost like I became a voice for the people around me. I remember the reaction to one of my personal favourites - The Breakup Poem, thinking people might assume I was soft but I had gangster guys approach me
saying how much the song made them miss their ex - over 30,000 people had seen the video. I also remember the time I was chilling with some friends, my boy had a camera and said drop a bar so I said ‘ite cool, I started doing my thing and my other friend started doing his thing. I made a twitter account and someone tweeted me saying, “you’re so inspirational” (laughs) they sent me a link to a video of myself, it had 2000 views – that was a shock. There are certain people that I am actually trying to speak to through my music. When we are growing up we are all friends, then we split and end up in different areas – it’s a message for everyone, not just for my area but London and worldwide.
What did you do before/during your career of music?
I had a bunch of jobs when I left school and I knew how I
wanted to live my life. I went to University in Kingston to study Business and Finance. The year I finished, was the year I started making music and creating videos. I went on to a graduate job in finance but I gave myself an ultimatum - if I can make as much money with music as I can with Finance, I will give up Finance. I was able to do so. I learnt about complacency. I achieved my goal and didn’t do much after that, so I ended up struggling financially. I had to push again. My family couldn’t see the longevity in music at first. My mum came around when she was at work and a c o l league of hers said, “listen to this, my favourite song at the moment” it was my song on the radio! She came home and was so happy. I later put on my first solo show and my dad sat front row – he gave me “the nod” and I knew he was proud of me. I think I have
My book When Words Speak is the most memorable thing to date. Everyone has loved it so far. A lot of girls say it has helped them understand the mind-set of men and their emotions which is something we struggle with at times. I have sold just over 3,000 copies to date. Oh, another great memory, I used to sit and work on my phone all night long, I would sit up at 3am posting and sending videos, I didn’t have a laptop at the time but it had to be done (laughs) - good times.
Have you faced any struggles over the years?
Yes, personal struggles, trying to keep up with the standards that I have set for myself. I have
to remind myself that I don’t need to recreate my material. I have over 100 poems in my phone, work with what you’ve got – it’s yours and it’s original. Also, financial struggles, trying to make everything with the little you have. It’s hard to stick to budgets and there’s hardly anyone who has done it before, there is no textbook to follow so you have to create your own pathway. I look forward to, God willing, soon having the money to pay another young person full time to run projects and promote works.
What are the things most important to you?
God and family before everything. Keeping my morals and not letting things around me change me. Expression is important to me. Supporting positive movements is also important to me. I would like to be able to retire soon, travel and support meaningful movements - like Black Lives Matter.
Is there anybody who you would like to thank?
Camara. (we laugh) Leyton, my original fan base – so much love. Ed Sheeran is another person who is able to paint his life in a crazy way, his songs are inspirational. Oh, and RnB. RnB music inspires me, it is just like poetry (we laugh again).
I would like to say a huge thank you to Nego (Nego True) for taking the time to speak with me amongst his many pressing projects. Keep an eye out for a new visual project he is working on with Barnardos, supporting the creation of mentors for children in foster care. Also, grab a copy of his book When Words Speak via his website. You can find Nego True online at… Bookings@NegoTrue.com Twitter/Instagram @NegoTrue Facebook NegoTrueOfficial

ADOPTION AND FOSTERING
W
ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience. Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons why a child is placed in care.
There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!
We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

Under 35s Called On To Consider Becoming Fosterers
T
o help recruit 7,000 new foster families across the UK there’s a call – made during the second week of Foster Care Fortnight - for more under 35s to consider becoming foster carers. At present less than five per cent of foster carers are under 35, despite this age group making up about 20 per cent of the UK’s population. The call comes from leading fostering charity, The Fostering Network, whose chief executive, Kevin Williams, said: “Older foster carers bring life experience and skills from other work to fostering, and do an amazing job in providing homes for thousands of fostered children. However, given the need for over 7,000 more foster families in 2017, it’s vital that we also
reach out to more people under 35 who are heavily under-represented among foster carers. What is important is not age, but rather the skills and qualities to look after fostered children, and we believe there are many people in this younger age bracket who would make fantastic foster carers but may think they’re too young. Younger foster carers will also be in a great position to offer homes to the many children who need to live with a foster family for the long term, often until the age of 21.” According to figures released from The Fostering Network overall, at least 7,180 new foster families are needed across the UK during 2017 to provide stable, secure and loving homes for record numbers of fostered children.
children. Often seen as leaders in fame, fortune and fashion, some of India’s leading celebrities are bringing about the biggest change in the society. One of the biggest names when it comes to Bollywood star adopting children is film actress, model and former Miss Universe winner, Sushmita Sen - the first name that comes to mind, when talking about adoption having fought a long battle to bring her baby, Renee, home before her battle for the custody of another child, Alisah. Sushmita said: “I wanted to be a mother all over again. The earlier law was that if you have adopted a girl as your first baby, you can't adopt another girl child. And I wanted a girl. Thankfully, the High Court changed the ruling. You can't imagine how happy I was after hearing that." Other Bollywood legends who have adopted children include; Raveena Tandon who took the bold step, when she was just 21- adopted two daughters - Chhaya and Pooja, when she was at the peak of her career, ‘Pardes’ director Subhash Ghai who adopted daughter, Meghna, ‘Khosla ka Ghosla,’ ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!,’ and ‘Love Sex aur Dhokha’ director Dibakar Banerjee, who, with his wife, Richa, adopted a baby girl from an orphanage in Mumbai, film producer, director and screenwriter Nikhil Advani dotes on his beautiful daughter, Keya, whom he adopted along with his wife, Suporna and choreographer, Sandip Soparrkar, who had to wait for long to get the custody of his son, Arjun. Adoption is an option for couples who are unable to have biological children. But many couples, single men and women are adopting children whenever they have heard of celebrity adoption despite of having, or being able to have, biological children.

he Adoption Leadership Board has published a briefing paper outlining its views on recent trends in adoption and permanency decision-making. Andrew Christie, Chair of the Adoption Leadership Board, said: “This paper looks at the recent trends in adoption and highlights some significant differences in the number of decisions for adoption in different areas of the country. This suggests there may be different approaches to planning and decision making for children in different parts of the country.” More needs to be done to understand why, in some parts of the country, adoption seems to have been ruled out as an option for children where previously this would have been considered along with other options.” Data collected by the Board
suggests that while the fall in decisions for adoption and placement orders seems to have halted, this masks a high degree of variation in decision-making at a local and regional level. In many local authorities there has been a fall in adoption decisions of over 50%; while in other areas there has been a significant increase. The paper also highlights the 560 children with placement orders that have been waiting for 18 months or more since entering care. This strongly suggests that more needs to be done to find suitable adopters to care for those children whose needs are well known and all too familiar – children with complex health needs or disabilities, children from minority ethnic, cultural, religious and language backgrounds, older children and sibling groups.

Chinese Worshiping Site a Major Attraction during Tomb Sweeping Day Up to 200,000 visits are made to an ancestral worshiping site in north China’s Hongtong county of Shanxi Province, to trace their roots, during the three-day Tomb Sweeping Day holiday. The Hongtong Dahuaishu, or the Big Locust Tree, is where many natives, both in and outside the country, believe their ancestors started their long trek of immigration in the Ming Dynasty (13681644). When the Tomb Sweeping Day falls in each year, a huge number of people from across the country and overseas would visit the ancestry tracing park built for the holy tree, a phenomenon classified by the authorities as a national intangible cultural heritage. "We travel from Hebei Province’s Handan City," said one visitor. "It’s a special trip for us to trace our ancestry roots on Tomb Sweeping Day. We go with our parental instructions and family tree book. This is really great." Jiao Chenbai, deputy managing director of the Hongtong Dahuaishu Ancestry Tracing Park, said; "Many people visit to trace their ancestry roots every year and the visits made during the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday always expect up to 2000,000 – and increasing every year." Tomb Sweeping Day, a day Chinese people pay tribute to their ancestors and remember their deceased family members has always been the busiest time for the park, according to Jiao.
Ramadan 2017

t’s the holy month of Ramadan, one of the most eagerly awaited months in the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims around the world will bearing gifts and blessings that are there for the taking. During this, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims will be fasting from the time of Fajr (the dawn prayer) to sunset as ordained by Allah (SWT). With countless narrations that discuss Ramadan in great detail, this month carries more importance than others, one of them being that it was the month in which the Holy Qur’an was revealed. “Ramadan is the month in which the Holy Qur’an was sent down, as a guide to mankind and a clear guidance and judgment so that mankind will distinguish from right and wrong,” said a scholar. “Lailat-ul-Qadr, a night worth a thousand months, comes in Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammed stated himself that all the gates of paradise open during Ramadan and they stay open throughout the
you, and that perhaps you may be thankful.’ Each year Ramadan’s schedule moves 11 to 12 days back, gradually shifting from one season to another because Islamic/Hijri are 11-12 days shorter than the Gregorian or Solarn calendar. The conclusion of Ramadan brings about the joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr; a three-day celebration during which there will be feasts and giving gifts to families
and friends. Millions of Muslims around the world will take part in Eid ul Fitr once again this year which will include prayers, feasts, parades and games at mosques and through hamlets, towns and cities. The end of Ramadan will fall sometime between Sunday June 25 and Monday June 26 with several of the festivals held at the weekend after the month-long fast has been broken.
It can range from a small gathering to the largest of ‘blowouts’ at community halls, clubs and centres, or places of worship. Whatever the scale – large, small, or indifferent – wherever the venue Father’s Day is one of those days where everyone will get a chance to honour his or her own father in a special way. Celebrated on the third Sunday of June each year, many churches throughout the UK will be holding religious events to honour the fathers.
Almost every Christian church will hold a special service on that Sunday commemorating the service and support which fathers bring to society and the UK as a whole. Catholic churches have special services in order to honour the paternal support that fathers provide for their families. Other religious centres will also have events planned for the special day. Father’s Day takes place on Sunday June 18, so help celebrate your father’s day this year by just being there for him. That’s the very least he deserves.

month while all gates of hell remain closed.” Although Ramadan is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. This difference means Ramadan moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days every year. The date may also vary from country to country depending on whether the moon has been sighted or not. The Quran says: ‘The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion (of right and wrong). “And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you is sick or on a journey, a number of other days. “Allah desires for you ease; He desires not hardship for you; and that you should complete the period, and that you should magnify Allah for having guided

he Bishop of Birmingham has approved the appointment of The Reverend Canon Matt Thompson as the next Dean of Birmingham follows the departure of the Very Revd Catherine Ogle earlier this year. Currently serving as the vicar of Bolton Parish Church, Revd Thompson will be installed at the city’s St Philips Cathedral in September. Canon Matt, who is married with a 10-year-old daughter, said he was excited to be joining Birmingham Cathedral. He said: “I am very honoured and delighted to be the next Dean of Birmingham and to serve
the Cathedral and the communities of the Birmingham diocese. I am very drawn by the desire of everyone at St Philip’s to reach out to the parish, city and diocese they seek to serve. “As a minister of the Gospel, I believe that God’s deepest desire is to see lives transformed so that all can enjoy the abundant life that Jesus proclaims to us. In that spirit, I am so excited by the Church of England – Birmingham’s vision of Transforming Church. I look forward to working with Bishop David in the service of Jesus Christ and in doing all I can to see the Cathedral, the congregations and the communities we
serve flourish. The opportunity to return to the West Midlands is a very exciting one and my family and I are really looking forward to our move to Birmingham.” Bishop of Birmingham, The Rt Revd David Urquhart welcomed Canon Matt and said: "I am delighted that Matt has been appointed Dean of Birmingham at such an exciting time in the life of both the church and the city. adly, it is becoming more and more common for women to diagonised with a form of cancer. Luckly, more women are becoming aware of the symptoms and battling against it. Cysters have been working closely with Womb Cancer Support UK and raising vitial awareness of Womb Cancer. Womb Cancer is the most common gynae cancer, and according to Cancer Research UK 9,324 women were diagonised with womb cancer in 2014 alone. 2,166 of these died as result, within the same year. Most cases occur in women over 50, however more and more women are being diagnosed at a younger age, some as young as 20. There is very little awareness of this Cancer. Despite it being the most common gynae cancer and the 4th most common cancer in women, (breast, bowl and lungs being the top 3), there is little research into this type of cancer, so we are not able to accurately confirm why more and more younger women are being affected. Obesity is also a factor within this diagnosis, with 41% of women with Womb Cancer struggling with obesity. But this still doesn’t explain the other 59%. Womb Cancer is also known as uterine cancer and endometrial cancer. Abnormal vaginal bleeding is the most common symptom of womb cancer. Especially if you have been through menopause. If you have not yet been through the menopause, unusual bleeding may include bleeding between your periods. You should see your GP as soon as possible if you experience any unusual vaginal bleeding. While it’s unlikely to be caused by womb cancer, it’s best to be sure. The bleeding maybe light bleeding accompanied by a watery discharge, which may get heavier over time. In women who haven’t been through the menopause, unusual vaginal bleeding may consist of: - Heavy Periods Bleeding in between
periods Less common symptoms include pain in the lower abdomen (tummy) and pain during sex. If the womb cancer reaches a more advanced stage, it may cause additional symptoms. These include: • pain in the back, legs, or pelvis • loss of appetite • tiredness • nausea The bleeding may be the result of several other health conditions, such as: • Endometriosis – where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb is found on the outside of the womb • Fibroids– non-cancerous growths that can develop inside the uterus • A Polyps in the womb lining Other types of gynaecological cancer can also cause unusual vaginal bleeding. Kaz Molloy from Womb Cancer Support UK offered this this piece of advice for those battling against this condition. “Being diagnosed with cancer changes your life in so many ways. You can never prepare yourself for a cancer diagnosis but how you respond to it will make all the difference. “If you can use the experience for good then do so. Seek out those people who can help you get through this. “It is a journey that you do not have to go on alone.” You can find out more about her journey here http://wombcancersupportuk. weebly.com/ If you find yourself in need of support and guidance through this, feel free to join our Private Facebook group. Focusing on topics such as CVD challenges, atrial fibrillation (AF) - a heart condition which causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate - high blood pressure, the way forward for diabetes care and improving outcomes for patients with diabetes, the aim of the event was to enable delegates to share new ideas in tackling diabetes, atrial fibrillation and CVD, as well as showcasing innovation from around the region. Reflecting on the event, Karen Morrey, Atrial Fibrillation Programme Lead at WMAHSN, said: “The day showed us that there is some great work going on in the West Midlands. “The aim of our project is to bring these strands together to

Diabetes Week
J
une 11th to the 17th inclusive is Diabetes Week in Great Britain & Northern Ireland, an annual event in the Diabetes UK calendar. I cannot believe the year has flown by so quickly as my first article in June 2016 for this monthly newspaper was all about diabetes. Well diabetes has not suddenly gone away and as a matter of fact it is on the increase as over four and a half million people have this medical condition. A further three quarter million are not aware that they have it simply because they have not had a health check or risk assessment done by their doctor or other health care professional. Of significance is the fact that diabetes can remain undetected in one’s body for up to ten years with none of the symptoms of tiredness, thirsty, thinner, more frequent passing of urine, blurred vision and slow healing of cuts and wounds. It is therefore highly appropriate that this anniversary article focuses on the health and well-being agenda pertaining to diabetes that I am passionate about. If I manage by this medium to convince one reader to have a medical check-up or alter their lifestyle with more physical activity and a more balanced diet it would have been worth it. I think my passion stems from the fact that as a child growing up in Jamaica I witnessed amongst my relatives the complications associated with diabetes of kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, blindness and limb amputations and with an enquiring mind would ask why. I was often told that my relatives had ‘a touch of sugar’ and have over the years come to realize how much diabetes was minimized and trivialized because if not managed and controlled the complications can be serious and life threatening. Having developed Type 2 diabetes in December 2004 I am fortunate enough through diet and a variety of physical activities to have never taken any medication since diagnosis and long may that continue to be the case. It is a known fact that for some people the word exercise conjures up images of having to go to the gym when that is not necessarily so. I am trying as one of the Diabetes UK Community Champions to get over that barrier and when I deliver presentations across the West Midlands prefer instead to use the words, physical activity instead of exercise. Brisk walking, gardening, dancing, climbing the stairs instead of using the lift/elevator and aerobics to name a few are all forms of workouts to keep one active, mobile and fit. There is so much to gain from being active as opposed to being inactive. That coupled with a healthy balanced diet are key to the new Diabetes UK slogan of ‘Know diabetes. Fight diabetes’. OVERSEAS NEWS Thinking of taking your child out of school for a holiday? As preparations are in place for barmy sun, sea and sand next month, it’s worth reminding parents that those who plan to take their children out of school for term time holidays is in line to be prosecuted – as, you remember – what happened to the father who lost his landmark case in the Supreme Court. Isle of Wight businessman, Jon Platt, who took his six-year-old daughter on a seven-day family trip to Florida in April 2015, lost his appeal against a £120 fine he had against him for his daughter’s unauthorised absence. The judges said he had shown a “blatant disregard of school rules” and that his approach had been a “slap in the face” to “obedient” parents who abide by the law. The ruling means that parents who take their children out of school on holiday - even if their child has regular attendance can be prosecuted if they do not receive permission from the head teacher. Lady Hale, Deputy President of the Supreme Court, said that Parliament would not have found it “acceptable” for children to be taken out of school by parents with a “blatant disregard for the rules.” According to guidelines, you can only allow your child to miss school if they are ill, or if you have received advanced permission from the school. Getting permission from the school requires making an application to the head teacher in advance, who will decide if your request will be granted. If you take your child out of school without permission, you risk receiving a fine of £60, which rises to £120 if paid after 21 days. If you don’t pay the fine after 28 days you may be prosecuted for your child’s absence from school, and could be fined up to £2,500 or receive a jail sentence of three months.

Second Runway Proposed for Abuja With the appropriation bill to be approved by the National Assembly a new, second, runway for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja is included in the 2017 budget as the National Assembly considered the injection of a N15 billion - work is due following ratification by Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika. The N15 billion is contained in the 2017 N7.3 trillion budget expected to be passed once the lawmakers resume from the Easter recess. The Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara, are said to be in talks with the Chairmen of the Committees on Appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje and Honourable Bala Dawaki, and the Chairmen of both the senate and house committees on the aviation sector - Sirika did say that the approval for its construction was dependent on the availability of funds. Support for the second runway, however, comes as long as they avoid a reoccurrence of the recent total shutdown of the Abuja airport with the subsequent negative implications on airline business and other logistics. The proposal has brought different reactions from significant players in the sector. While some displayed their support for the construction of a second runway others have argued that the airport, at least for now, needs no second runway. Sirika said: “We will have a second runway in Abuja by the grace of God. All our major airports have second runway, including Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kano. It’s only Abuja which is the nation’s capital and the fastest growing city in Africa that has no second runway.” He said the same spirit and zeal the federal government exhibited in fixing Kaduna-Abuja road within a month and rehabilitation of the runway within six weeks should be adopted in constructing a new runway as soon as possible.

T
he world’s first robot policeman has officially joined Dubai’s police force. While it’s not exactly the Robocop from the movie, officers in the United Arab Emirates may want to get used to them, as the bots may soon account for a quarter of their colleagues. The autonomous Robocop entered the line of duty by greeting guests and patrolling the halls at the three-day Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference (GISEC), with plans in place to have the machine on the streets in popular Dubai areas now - after
the expo ended. “With an aim to assist and help people in the malls or on the streets, the Robocop is the latest smart addition to the force and has been designed to help us fight crime, keep the city safe and improve happiness levels,” said Brigadier-General Khalid Nasser Al Razzouqi, Director-General of Smart Services with the Dubai Police. The cyborg is the first of many that will be joining the frontline if officials are to achieve their ambitious target of staffing 25 percent of the police force with machines by 2030.

PROPERTY AND REAL ESTATE Buying Now Cheaper Than Renting
F
igures are showing that renting a home in Britain is now cheaper than buying one in over 50% of major cities with Londoners faring best - paying 47% less (£1,861) than the average mortgage payment (£3,001) in the capital. The average monthly rental payment on a two-bedroom home across Britain's 50 cities rings in at £690 – that's £47 cheaper than the average mortgage repayment of £737. The proportion of locations where it's now cheaper to rent a home than to buy one has increased by 14% since October 2016. Then, it was more cost-effective to rent in just 40% of British cities. A spokesperson for British property websit Zoopla, Lawrence Hall, said: "It's important to remember that, while renters may be better off in the short-to-medium term in some areas of the country, buying a property is a long-term investment. And, with most buyers opting for mortgage terms of 25 years, buyers are likely to be better off overall compared to those who choose to rent."
Estate Surveyors Demanding Reform in Asset Valuation
A
surprise windfall could soon provide valuation jobs for estate surveyors, if federal authorities in Nigeria adopt and implement a radical plan proposed under the International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS) for all Ministry, Departments and Agencies (MDAs). Following a meeting between Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers president, Dr. Bolarinde Patunola- Ajayi and Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Ahmed Idris, became necessary to fulfill the Estate Surveyors and Valuers’ Registration Board of Nigeria Act, Cap E13 LFN 2007. In the meeting the Patunola-Ajayi faulted in the non-inclusion of estate surveyors in the MDAs-IPSAS Implementation Committee; “As important and
as critical as the competence of our professional members is, the committee did not factor the valuer’s competence either as an in-house member or as outsourced input,” he said. “The terms of reference of the MDA-IPSAS committee included: to identify and document all assets and liabilities of the MDA grouped as follows: investment property; property, plant and equipment; biological assets and agricultural produce; intangible assets among others.” The six requests made by the institution at the meeting are as follows: inclusion of qualified estate surveyor and valuer in all the MDA’s IPSAS committees at all levels; engagement of registered estate firms in the valuation and preparation of public sector asset register and adoption of the reviewed attached sample of fair valuation template/schedule.
Other demands include issuance of a directive to all MDAs to the effect that asset registration and valuation should be captured in the 2018 Budget for those which have not valued their assets for IPSAS compliance; implementation of immediate establishment of Directorate of Valuation in the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) as well as establishment of asset management department in each MDA, to be headed by a qualified estate surveyor and valuer. ome of the biggest names in cricket launched the brand new ‘Cricket Has No Boundaries’ initiative – a campaign designed to showcase and celebrate the diversity of modern cricket in the UK – to support the ECB’s aim for a game for everyone and mirror the bank’s own commitment to diversity and inclusion. At its heart is a partnership with ‘Chance to Shine,’ the charity that uses cricket to increase aspiration, promote social cohesion and create opportunities in diverse communities affected by youth crime and anti-social behaviour. ‘Cricket Has No Boundaries’ will be the first undertaken by NatWest, as it assumes its new role as principal partner of England Cricket. NatWest is the longest-standing sponsor of cricket anywhere in the world with a track record of nearly 40 years’ support for England’s national sport. David Wheldon, NatWest’s chief marketing officer, said: “We’ve been supporting cricket since 1981, so we’re delighted to extend our partnership with the ECB. We believe cricket is the most diverse and inclusive sport in England and Wales, offering access and opportunities to people of any age, gender, physical ability, sexual orientation, social or ethnic background.” People will be encouraged to pledge their support through a range of initiatives that will raise funds for ‘Chance to Shine’ and will mobilise the Bank’s 60,000 staff and 16m customers.
he organisers of the IAAF World Championships London 2017 have announced that for the first time ever at a World Championships, coaches of medal winning athletes will also receive medals. The medals, gifted to successful athletes once they return from their ceremony, will be for them to hand to their coach or significant advisor in recognition of the unique and valued working relationship between athlete and coach.
H
undreds of runners took part in ‘TehRUN’ – the first international marathon to take place in the Iranian capital - although many were left disappointed after authorities reportedly denied US citizens visas and prohibited women from taking part in the full race. The race was meant to be an opportunity for Iran to "build bridges" with the international community and break down stereotypes.
Initially female runners believed they would be able to participate in the 26-mile race, although the event website made it clear they would need to wear a headscarf or sports bandana covering their hair, long-sleeved shirts that came down over their hips, and avoid shorts. Due to the country's strict segregation rules, however, the organizers were unable to confirm whether or not they would be able to run at all. After learning that they could only participate in a 10km ‘ladies
run,’ a select number of defiant and determined women held their own unofficial marathon Dutch runner, Karin Brogtrop-Beekman, led a group of defiant female runners to Behesht Madaran Park to complete a marathon run there. “Behesht Madaran (‘mother’s heaven’) is usually a women’s park,” she said. “But as it was a ‘family day’ meaning both sexes were in the usually female-only space, so we ran wearing headscarves.” Contrary to some reports of

irmingham’s first-ever 50 metre swimming pool is now filled with water and will be open to the public in a matter of months- and will prove a vital cog in the city’s wheels in its bid to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Part of the showpiece £55 million 360 Sport and Fitness Centre at the University of Birmingham, the Olympic-sized pool will prove to be the perfect platform to discover future Games medalists – right in the heart of the country.
Coaches to receive Recognition in London
Gary Humpage, head swim coach at the University, said: "For our elite swimmers, to be able to train in a 50m pool, the difference cannot be stressed enough - they can now effectively be able to swim 10 per cent more because of not having to turn every 25m." He went on: "The pool has a moveable wall to allow it to be split into two 25m pools, as well as a moveable floor for children's swimming lessons." City Council leader, John Clancy, said Birmingham is a "fantastic
sporting city," already hosting major events including The Ashes and the Rugby World Cup. "We have proven ourselves to be warm, welcoming and friendly hosts to a number of international events in recent years," he said. "In addition to the huge economic impact, the showcase baths will highlight the very best that our city and wider region has to offer to the world." Due to open in December, the Olympic-size pool will be the only 50metre swimming-pool in the West Midlands.
“high risks of arrests,” Brogtrop-Beekman says the breakaway runners were always careful to stay within the limits of Iranian law. She said; “I’m so happy we pulled it off in such a positive and non-offending way. We all just had a ball. I lived in Tehran for two years with my family, so I love Iran and by running a marathon there I hoped it was a good example for sports women in the country.”
The coaches medal will be based upon similar themes to the athlete medals but will differ in design, with both sets unveiled in May. Olympic long jumper Jazmin Sawyers, who was part of the creative panel that fed into the medal design process, said: “The coach-athlete relationship is so special and important so it is fantastic that they are set to be recognised for their efforts with medals in London.” The IAAF World Championships London 2017, and the World Para Athletics Championships London 2017, are together the biggest sporting event in the world in 2017 - the biggest to be staged at the London Stadium since the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Perfect ‘Match’ a Perfect End for Super Eagle Victor Moses
I
t proved to be a week to remember, or forget, for Nigerian international, Victor Moses. He got himself a treasured Premier League winner’s medal, massive headline after his inexplicable ‘dive’ – which saw him receiving a red card - in Chelsea’s FA Cup final 2-1 loss to Arsenal, before – to top all his achievements – he got married to his long time partner, Josephine, in London a day later. The ex-Crystal Palace star, originally failed to tie down a place at Stamford Bridge – which prompted his loan moves to Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham United – before he repaid present manager Antonio Conte’s faith in him with impressive showings this season, leading to the Blues lifting the trophy after a 5-1 battering of Sunderland on the final match day, having wrapped up the title by beating West Bromwich Albion earlier in the month. Chelsea manager Antonio Conte believes his players’ ability to adapt to a new defensive system quickly was key to their Premier League success this season. And ‘key’ in that adaptation proved to be wing-back Victor Moses. A 2013 Africa Cup of Nations
winner, the 26-year-old, whose family are strict follower of Christianity -beamed; “I have always believed in my ability to play in a big club like Chelsea. I have proved that. And we have a manager here that is willing to give everybody an opportunity.” The Blue’s transformation in fortunes under Conte was, in part, down to a shift from playing four at the back to a three-man defence-with winger, Moses, an integral part of that shift in formation. “To be honest, I just wanted to play football,” the Kaduna-born Super Eagles star said; “It was at Hull that it all started. I really enjoyed it and I took everything in. I kept watching the video of myself after that game, to make sure I was in the right place, and after that I took it in and kept on improving.” His new contract now guarantees him a weekly wage of £110,000 which is the highest for any Nigerian player in Europe with the Confederation of African Football and Nigeria Football Federation both congratulating him for his English Premier League triumph with Chelsea and hailing the Super Eagle for his landmark achievement.
