Moses joins Prince in Palace kick-about

s further recognition for his lifetime’s work devoted to both local and international football, Birmingham-man Lincoln Moses MBE was one of 150 special invitees to meet Prince William, at Buckingham Palace, as part of the English FA’s much-vaunted 150th anniversary celebrations. Moses, General Manager of the city-based record-breaking Continental Stars football and community club and a lead representative of the St. Kitts/Nevis Football Association in England, was chosen by the FA as one of their 150 grassroots volunteers award winners in celebration of its anniversary and receive a well-deserved award which presented by the Duke of Cambridge. A well-chuffed Lincoln said of the occasion, last month: “I was humbled by the invitation to Buckingham Palace and the level of interest in my work. I was

truly blessed by all the interest it drew for me.” A Kick It Out Grassroots Advisory Group member, Moses is also a board member of the Birmingham Association of Youth Clubs, a Director of ‘Trapped Starz,’ founder of Brothers Keeper, which specialties in empowering socially excluded young people to access local programmes, is an elected representative on the council of the Birmingham County FA, Chair of both BCFA Race Equality Advisory Group and Holford Drive Community Sports Hub and was voted one of the 50 most influential Black people in football in 2009, 2010 and also 2011. The Aston Villa-supporting Prince said of the occasion: “I cannot tell you how excited I was that we played football on my grandmother’s lawn. Football has brought me a great deal of pleasure over the years.” Lincoln was made MBE in the New Year’s Honours List in 2009.

The champagne and rum punch flowed in abundance with lavish hors d’oeuvres catered throughout the reception. We have to celebrate the fact that we know how to get together when there is a need and purpose. I had the opportunity to meet the two writers of the script for Home Again. Sudz Sutherland
was a very keyed up gentleman who exuded passion about the need to create an awareness of Black film makers to make films that would be received in other countries and mainstream cinemas. With a unique partnership with wife Jennifer Holness, they both work in respect and harmony of their skill in the profession of writing and making film. Felix Dexter; so talented and so missed
T
he tragic death of comedian Felix Dexter shocked the world of entertainment as colleagues and peers, and felt by family, fans and friends throughout. Comedian, David Baddiel, mourned the St. Kitts-born Londoner “a real loss to comedy,” The Fast Show's Paul Whitehouse, who acted with Dexter in ‘Bellamy's People,’ said: “I was privileged to be close to the comedian and actor. He was very modest and very private person, but he stuck in people's minds. It was an honour to be close to

him.” He came to prominence in the Black-led comedy show, The Real McCoy and also performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Once named Time Out ‘Comedian of the Year,’ Dexter also featured in the iconic BBC comedy Absolutely Fabulous and also appeared in BBC comedy; ‘Citizen Khan.’ Billed to appear on the recent The Real McCoy Tour, fellow TRMc stalwart and close friend, John Simmit, said: I knew of his illness, but nevertheless it was still a big shock. I miss the very talented and private Felix Dexter." He also featured in Have I Got News For You and Grumpy Old Men, as well as Knowing Me Knowing You. As an actor, he had parts in Casualty and The Bill and appeared in the West End alongside Christian Slater. Felix had suffered from myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer. He was 52.

s Acorns Children’s Hospice celebrates hitting its ‘NOW is the time’ campaign target of raising enough money to provide 25,000 days of care, the charity’s chief executive warns of growing challenges to generating vital funds in the future. When the campaign was launched it was hoped the 25,000 day figure would be reached by this year’s end. Instead, the goal was achieved by the close of September, bettering all expectations by raising enough funds to provide 25,259 days of care. Acorns chief executive, David Strudley, said: “Reaching our fundraising goal early is a remarkable achievement and a

Faith and health leaders launch innovation for community care
F
aith and Healthcare leaders gathered at the Birmingham Nishkam Centre to launch a new faith inspired digital health network to create community inter-dependency in the face of wider healthcare challenges. They also explored new strategies in enhancing compassion in healthcare. The event demonstrated the usefulness of sharing values for collective actions by all stakeholders for the common good of healthcare, also helping to enhance compassion for improving lives and uplift humanity. Following the publication of the Francis Report earlier this year, healthcare professionals across the service have faced heightened scrutiny over their ability to show compassion and empathy for their patients. Whilst care and compassion have always been the values that have underpinned the ethos of the NHS, they also resonate closely with virtues propagated by all major religious traditions of the world, as core principles of faith. Local inspiration Gina Moffatt launches her second café
L
ocated in the heart of Tottenham, Gina Moffatt proudly presented the launch of the Blooming Scent Café , her second cafe at the 639 Enterprise Centre on Thursday 3 October. A previous Pride of Britain Young Achiever winner and mentee of dragon den’s James Caan, Gina Moffatt has the perfect ‘rags to riches’ tale. Gina explains she was in a ‘very dark place’ as a prisoner at Holloway Prison eight years ago, but with the help of Princes Trust and London Youth Support Trust she was given a chance in life with a business of her own and is now an entrepreneur and quite evidently a local celebrity too! Neo soul sound-waves flooded the streets of Tottenham, enticing passers-by. An enthusiastic and wildly talented band played popular tunes by the likes of John Legend and Bob Marley with a jazzy twist. Wine, cocktails and fresh juices were generously served. A collection of vibrant paintings of Marcus Garvey, Bob Marley and more decorated the walls

and supported the ethos of Gina Moffatt’s big day; creating a legacy despite the set-backs in life. Gina Moffatt graced the stage sheepishly with a huge smile on her face. “I’m so shocked and so honoured you’re all here. Eight years ago I was in a very dark place. I can’t believe my life right now. Every day is a dream, it is such a blessing.” Gina went on to thank the main people in her life who she claims were the reason she was able to start her own business, to which they all responded that she deserved it. They all echoed an immeasurable passion she has that was inevitably leading her this
way. “The community always support me, whether it’s constructive criticism or bringing all their friends and family to the cafe, they are such a blessing”. Gina explained. Amongst cheers, claps and exclamations of “we love you Gina,” Gina stepped down from the stage to speak with the guests and more music was performed whilst platters of Caribbean dishes were served. Gina is heavily connected with the local community, and hopes to eventually turn the café in to a social enterprise, where people can get training in skills such as customer service, cash management and business management. Gina Moffatt is living proof that with hard work and determination, anything is possible and we can expect more young entrepreneurs in the Tottenham area too, Gina explained; “There are loads of great young businesses in Tottenham, we are all trying to climb out of that hole, your help matters, we are all trying to help each other!”

Innovative new procedure to be hosted at BMEC
F
ollowing the success of trialling the UK’s first glaucoma hydrus stent surgery earlier this year, the Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre has forged ahead with another first in glaucoma surgery. Mr Imran Masood, Consultant Ophthalmologist, is the first in the UK to perform the new ‘Glaukos Supra-choroidal Stent’ procedure as part of an international study. Glaucoma is a condition associated with an increase in the pressure within the eye. This condition can gradually lead to permanent loss of sight because of damage to the optic nerve. The innovative procedure involves inserting the new stent
device directly into the space that lies beneath the lining of the eye ball, called the supra-choroidal space, resulting in a significant reduction in eye pressure for adult patients with glaucoma. Patient, Patrick Holloway, who was operated on as part of the innovative procedure, said: “I have had glaucoma for 22 years, and was still a merchant navy officer when I first experienced typical glaucoma symptoms. My local optometrist sent me straight to the Birmingham eye centre after noting high pressure in my eyes, and I have been in their care ever since. My vision is better and I look forward to returning to work and following my other interests. Without the operation this may

not have been possible.” Mr Masood is a leading expert in glaucoma and has extensive experience in the area of microinvasive glaucoma surgery using the i-stent. He is nationally renowned for bringing innovative techniques, as part of global studies, to support patients living with glaucoma. He said: “We are very proud at BMEC to continue to lead the way nationally in innovative and safer glaucoma surgical techniques. The supra-choroidal space is a natural low pressure space within the eye and these new stents tap into this to lower the eye pressure, and prevent further visual loss due to glaucoma.”
R
esearch into local eating habits has revealed that Birmingham people are sitting down to the same meals week in week out. As they admit to sticking to an average of only five recipes on rotation, the retailer is calling on the region to wake up its taste buds. Led by leading supermarket, Morrisons showed an astonishing 51 per cent of the city’s residents polled admitted to being stuck in a severe repeat meal rut consuming the same meals week after week. Almost two thirds (63 per cent) said they still consume the exact same meals they were a decade ago. Demanding lifestyles are the main barrier to Brummies expanding their palates and culinary skills with 53 per cent citing a lack of time as the main restriction to cooking. A third of Brummies admit they are only able to spend 20 minutes or less each day on meal preparation, meaning these unadventurous eaters are sticking with what they know. Despite being home to restaurants by Michelin starred Birmingham chefs Glynn Purnell and Richard Turner, many locals admit to being terrible in the kitchen. 55 per cent describe their cooking skills as ‘average’

or ‘below average’ (compared to 50 per cent nationally), and 19 per cent site this as the main reason they are stuck in a rut. The research undertaken coincided with the launch of a new range of M Kitchen meals, and the pop up M Kitchen in the city’s Victoria Square found that 24 per cent are unlikely to ever attempt to cook a new type of cuisine as they prefer to stick to traditional British meals such as roast beef, bangers and mash and shepherd’s pie.

Minority issues no longer a priority for RSM?

octors from across the UK attended a specially convened meeting to discuss the subject of mental Illness within the Black Minority Ethnic community The seminars, at the Royal Society of Medicine in central London, provide a forum for General Practitioners and hospital specialists to express their views and findings and the huge impact it has on society at large. The BME section of the RSM deals with specific health issues that are associated within the Black demographics with its founder, Dr Frank Chinegwundoh MBE a Consultant Urological Surgeon saying: “The reason why this section was started in 2001 was that the organisation did not have an academic forum
whereby health issues affecting BME communities could be discussed although there were other sections within the Royal Society of Medicine to dealt with. This, though, was the first academic forum that specifically discussed health issues affecting Black and ethnic minority communities. This was not a section for Black people but a section where Black and minority ethnic issues can be discussed because this affects all people. By having a Black and minority ethnic health section ensured that these issues couldn’t be ignored. It is important that the organisations such as the RSM should not conceivably be seen as a white middle-class institution who is not interested in the wider diversity.” The findings of this meeting have yet to be fully documented

Everyone knows that a generation of Asian and Black entrepreneurs built their businesses here with little capital, no government intervention and less support. Many came with just a suitcase - think Uganda or Windrush. How? We knew that we wouldn’t fit in, so we didn’t waste much time and energy looking for acceptance. Instead we put the hours into maintaining healthy business practices and developing core supporting mechanisms. We’ve tried to keep faith in our families and share the successes of what we’ve accomplished. Through tough times its always been a “fight the power” mentality that’s kept me going. These are tools for everyone. In fact we’re already seeing the wider UK business community adopting Black and Asian business models. The local business papers reported this summer that Islamic banking - based on strict moral principles - is free of “toxic assets” and currently picking up British customers, who want safe and ethical finance. ou’ve heard the saying, ‘no man is an island’? Well it is certainly true in business. If you run a small business or you are a micro business, networking can help you grow your business more quickly and more easily than you otherwise would, provided that you take networking seriously. I was visiting a Caribbean take away last month and noticed a pile of October’s issue of The Phoenix Newspaper on the table. As I paid for my food I asked the mild mannered gentleman who served me, what he thought small business owners wanted to see featured in the ‘Business and Finance’ section. “I would like to see more information about marketing”, he replied. I asked him to elaborate and he said, “I don’t think England takes advantage of marketing techniques as well America or China does” or words to that effect. Without getting into the merits for and against that statement, (as I’m sure there would be a wave of responses rebutting l that statement from our fine advertising agencies) I suggested he keep an eye out for the November issue, as he may find at least one marketing idea to grow his business. Networking. Networking means caring about people. It’s about looking for ways to serve others and how you can help them. Please get this. I repeat networking is looking for ways to serve others and how you can help them. If you do this one thing you would be amazed at the results. Now before you go off and apply this, I am making a few assumptions about you and your business. I assume that you give good value for what you charge and you don’t have any unresolved complaints hanging over you from your customers or clients. If you can’t answer yes to the above, I would suggest you sort that out first. Okay, with that said try this. Ask your client or customer or even supplier if there is any way that you can help them. Be sincere and keep doing this with everyone you serve or who serves you. If you persist in doing this people are going to take you seriously and start to want to pay you back the same compliment. When you keep at it you are going to end up being invited to join like-minded people professionals and professional networkers. Have a guess how many networking

groups and clubs there are in the UK? Thousands! Just as your business should have an identity, you should know your ideal client and be able to say in a few clear sentences, whom you are looking to serve and the benefit that client will gain by being served by you. Once you have clarity about the above, you will be able to navigate the murky waters of the network marketing sea of the good and the ‘not so good’ opportunities out there. I appreciate that it can be a minefield trying to pick the right kind of networking club to join, since they don’t have the same methods of operation. Black History Month Made Special I
n the month given to recognise Black History, there were many discussions that featured the life of Jamaica's first National Hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey. How fitting that his son Dr Julius Garvey would make his first trip to the UK at this time, and make Birmingham one of his 4 stops. The trip was organised by Eddie Capone, CEO of London’s Treatment Music who teamed up with Desmond Jaddoo, who or-
ganised the Midlands events. First stop was to Jamaica High Commission, before heading to Birmingham for a full day, which included a trip to Birminghams legal African-Caribbean Station, Newstyle Radio, where one of the studios is named after the Honourable Marcus Garvey. In the days of Marcus Garvey, a man whose staunch teaching of Black people to economically be in control of their own destiny could not have happened without education. In the days of Garvey Snr, black people were not allowed into universities. Well like father like son, Dr Julius Garvey certainly was going to accept those teachings, and made his mark as a renowned vascular surgeon based in New York. Dr Julius Garveys visit scheduled to 4 cities certainly took on an academic feel as he visited the Universities of Birmingham, Manchester and Nottingham, on his tour whilst also attending community meetings. The visit to the University of Birmingham organised by Kadian Pow, Community Engagement Coordinator, who was also the organiser for the universities Black History

events. As Dr Garvey spoke to the students at will, he encourage them to overcome the struggles they face in the system by challenging anything they found unfair. This was then followed by a visit to The Drum Arts Centre where he met the pupils of Perry Beeches Academy and whilst some were unsure of what they wanted to be when they grew up he told them he wanted to be an engineer but then found himself studying medicine. He was sure to tell them as a child he was 'a bit of a rebel' this he described as his journey to learning about himself before tucking into his favourite meal of ackee and saltfish provided by local takeaway, Russell’s Caribbean Restaurant . He ended his whistle stop tour in Birmingham with a community evening at New Testament Church of God Handsworth. His trip was seen as invaluable to the black community as he sought to

A National Coffee Morning with a Caribbean Twist
O
ne thing we know for sure, is that Cancer does not discriminate, and as a generation of people we are not good at facing our illnesses. However in this twentieth century ignorance is no excuse for loss of life. To help the community face their fear of the 'BIG C' I decided for the first time to join in with the National Macmillan
Coffee morning on Friday 27th September and give it a twist; ‘a Taste of the Caribbean’ to raise awareness and funds for the illness living amongst our community through ignorance. Having not done this before what was going to be needed? A sponsor, a venue, a speaker, coffee and cakes. Back I went into the community to ask for their support as they have never failed me yet. After his fathers death, it was then left to his mother to instil the teachings of the father into her sons. Marcus Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) after returning to Jamaica from America in 1914 to pursue his dream of a return to Africa; he founded the Black Star shipping line to provide transportation to Africa. Having only moved to London in 1935 he died in June 1940. Garveys body was returned to Jamaica in 1964 and he was declared the country’s first national hero. Dr Julius Garvey had a very fulfilling visit whilst here as he also got meet a cousin who he not seen in 62 years on his visit to Manchester. A rapturous fare-

Then we needed 'coffee' not just your ordinary coffee though, as we were having a MacMillan Coffee morning with ‘a taste of the Caribbean’. Who else would I ask but Marley Coffee, produced by Rohan Marley, son of Bob Marley.
The Caribbean is known for our baking and traditional rum cakes. There is a Kitchen that is currently carrying that sweet smell, whilst giving you all the range to meet your needs; Gluten free, vegetarian and Vegan cakes as well as 'that' Cake ‘The Rum Cake'. So I contacted proprietor of Charmain's Kitchen, then we also needed some cupcakes. I knocked the doors of Tesco Five Ways and behind that door I found Matthew Holdway Hannah, then knowing one of the most things women are sensitive about is our hair, I decided this was an area I wanted addressing. l Raffle prize winners Trichologist Shirley MacDonald who is based in London. Her job is to diagnose and treat hair and scalp disorders. Then I needed some helpers! It was a given as Birmingham first Hospitality College who are on the doorstep of The Drum would deliver service with a smile. I engaged the radio to ask for more support as I reached forward to invite the community. Thankfully everyone contacted was happy to join in the MacMillan Coffee morning with a taste of the Caribbean. I then realised what I wanted to share may require some pampering, so I needed some gifts.
Enter Lush Cosmetics and Organics Roots Stimulator who were kind enough to donate gifts for our raffle. We had the most amazing day, a 'HUGE' Thankyou to all who gave so generously, to those who came to The Drum Birmingham, drank Marley Coffee and 'Stirred It Up ' and shared in the event. We raised a staggering £167.10. The best advice that was shared on the day was ‘as scary as the 'BIG C' is, it is better to face it and get help whilst you can’. EDUCATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH -
Hereward College students team up with The Phoenix Newspaper
S
tudents from Hereward College looking to move into a career in the Media and Journalism industry are to undertake a work placement at The Phoenix newspaper in Birmingham.
It is hoped that their time at the newspaper will encourage the students to become more confident in their skills and enhance their knowledge.
Some of the things the students will be doing include design work for the paper, writing articles for already established features and starting their very own features.
Working in partnership with the newspaper, Phoenix Managing Director Marcia hopes to help the students develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of media.
A student involved in the partnership, Katy Oakes, said, “I am really looking forward to working here and learning new skills. I have already enjoyed the amount of freedom and creativity I have been allowed to have, it’s allowed me to progress quickly!”
Students will be given the chance to work with staff at the magazine to develop their own features which will be featured either in The Phoenix or in our sister publication, Street Cred.
With a diverse range of students, it is hoped that the students will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the paper and help further promote it within the local community we serve.
The Phoenix Managing Director commented “I am excited to be working with the students of Hereward College to not only help them develop themselves but also to develop this paper. The skills that these students have already shown to us make me confident that big things will be happening in the near future. Watch this space!”

he traditional A to G grading structure will be scrapped as part of a shake-up of GCSEs in favour of a new nine-point scoring system. As part of the first major reforms to education qualifications for 20 years, extra grades will be added to GCSEs for the qualifications system in England. They will be graded on a 9-point scale – rather than the present eight – following concerns over the existing system

Students were given the opportunity to present their design ideas when Dominic Goold, a local business entrepreneur and Managing Director of fashion brand Brady Bags, chose to work with the college on a live brief. Brady Bags are high quality sporting bags handmade in Walsall, from best quality canvas, brass components and English bridle leather. Established since 1887, Brady is a renowned name around the world and Japan is currently one of its fastest growing markets. The brief was to come up with a new business bag aimed at a younger market but still in keeping with Brady’s trademark style. Students had a month to work on their designs before six were shortlisted. These students then visited the Brady factory to work with the production team to further develop their ideas. Rachael’s design was selected as the overall winner and Domi-
nic commented: “Rachael’s bag fits the brief extremely well and it’s a simple yet elegant design which combines tweed, canvas and leather materials which tell a story about the heritage of the brand. It can also be developed as part of a range of bags.” Rachael said: “I was very excited when my design was picked and seeing it come off the production line was an amazing feeling. Hopefully it will be popular in Japan. I feel really lucky to have this amazing opportunity so earlier in my career as a designer.” In addition, the company was impressed with Krystal’s design that they have decided to make a sample and test for feedback. Dominic said: “It was very clear to us that Krystal’s sketch would be a great fit with the Brady brand and we felt this was an opportunity we couldn’t afford to pass up.” “I didn’t expect the company to select a second design but it’s great to be rewarded for the hard work I put into the project,” said Krystal. The sample bags are now being shown to Japanese distributors and Dominic will also visit Japan to gain further feedback.

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience. Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons
why a child is placed in care. There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more ! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!
We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

Adoption & Fostering Our ongoing campaign to help the children in need in our communities With support from
olverhampton’s Children in Care Council welcomed members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Looked After Children and Care Leavers to a special workshop recently – and gave their views on the services they receive. In particular, the 12 young people who took part were asked for their thoughts about services they are entitled to, either as looked after children or when they leave care for the final time. Also taking part was Craig Whittaker MP, Chair of the APPG, as well as representatives from Birmingham and Bradford’s Children in Care Councils.
Councillor Val Gibson, Wolverhampton City Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Families, said: “The All-Party Parliamentary Group is carrying out research into whether looked after children and care leavers are aware of the help and support they are entitled to. Wolverhampton Children in Care Council recognises that this is a hugely important issue and so we decided to take a proactive approach and arrange the workshop so that they could contribute to the inquiry.” Corporate Parenting Officer Lorna Tull said: “The young people raised a number of concerns, including about the disparity in entitlements between young people attending higher
education and those in further education and allowances for young people in residential and foster care. They also felt it was unfair that young people could remain in foster placements after the age of 18 while those in residential placements had to leave. It was a very interesting discussion and I am sure it proved useful for the Entitlements Inquiry.” Councillor Gibson added: “I’d like to thank all the young people who took part in the workshop for giving up their time and speaking so passionately about the services they receive – and the sort of support which is important to them.”
Diversity in Adoption
I
t is a sad fact that there are some children who are unable to live with their birth family, and who, because of neglect, abuse or perhaps just because their parents simply cannot cope with being a parent, go into public care. Adoption is one of the best ways we know of giving these children a family for life. We, at the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) believe passionately in the importance of families. We know that children do best in life if they have a secure and loving family of their own – a family who will help them feel strong and confident and who will always be there for them. There are over 4,000 children across the UK who need to be adopted every year and there is a desperate shortage of adopters. Some people think about adoption, but never look into it further. They are convinced they will be ruled out due to the many myths that surround who can and cannot adopt. Some people
still don’t realise that being disabled doesn’t automatically rule you out. And being disabled is not the only reason why people think they are not allowed to adopt. Other misconceptions that persist include issues around age, marital status, sexual orientation and income. But in reality, you don’t need to be under forty – there is no upper age limit; if you are single or in a same –sex relationship you can adopt; you don’t need to own your own home or be rich and issues such as being overweight won’t automatically rule you out. Also people from all ethnicities and cultures are needed and welcomed As long as you are over 21 and do not have a criminal conviction for certain crimes, you can apply to be assessed as an adopter.
Karen, who is a, single black adopter who has adopted a little girl told us:“There are so many children of all ages who need a forever family. If you feel you can make that happen, go for it. Speak to someone about adoption and ask all the questions you need to ask. From the moment my daughter stepped into my life, I haven’t been happier. I live for her. I feel like I’ve had her from the moment she was born. Adoption is a wonderful thing.” Alan Wood, Deputy Chief Executive at BAAF said: “The UK has one of the most open, liberal and supportive set of criteria for those interested in adopting a child. Adopters come from every sector of society, from 21 years up, from every income level, ethnic group, religious persuasion and sexual orientation. Most adopters have overcome various challenges in their lives and have the evidence to show they have emerged more resilient, more insightful and more child
centred. These are the qualities that count.” Especially needed are people who could parent a sibling group of children who need to stay together; children from some black minority ethnic communities; older children (and by ‘older’, we mean over four years of age) or a child with disabilities or complex needs. These are the children who wait longer for a forever family. BAAF knows from existing adoptive families that it can be hard work, but that the rewards are huge. Adoption is a lifelong commitment. It's not always easy, but as many adoptive parents will tell you, it can be one of the most amazing and worthwhile experiences of your life. The Government Help to Buy Scheme
T
he launch of the Government’s Help to Buy (HTB) scheme has provided a welcome solution for buyers struggling to step up the property ladder. Martin Allsopp, president of Birmingham Law Society, takes a look at the scheme and the additional costs buyers should be aware of when signing on the dotted line. Help to Buy is an equity loan scheme designed to help first time and low deposit buyers to purchase a home with only a five per cent deposit. The scheme allows buyers to borrow up to 20 per cent of the purchase price of a home, which is Government backed and interest free for the first five years. Buyers are required to provide a five per cent deposit, with the 95 per cent mortgage provided by a selected mortgage company. The first half of the scheme (HTB1) was launched in April but only available on brand new homes. Although successfully helping buyers onto the property ladder, it is a fairly complex legal process. Lawyers need to be involved with equity charges, where criteria have to be followed at different stages of the process, and agents for the mortgage provider have to authorise each stage.
This in turn may result in additional legal costs for the buyer. Part two (HTB2) of the scheme has now been launched four months early in an attempt to further boost the housing market. It is hoped it will attract not only first time buyers but existing homeowners who are purchasing any property valued up to £600,000. Unlike the first phase, HTB2 should proceed in the same way as a normal house purchase transaction, meaning there should be no additional legal costs l Martin Allsopp, President of Birmingham Law incurred. I now work as a logistics manager at William Pitt construction in Accra Ghana. I love the lord and the lord love us all, every month I will be bringing to you God’s News from various different perspective. As a little background to myself presented in this document, I am persuaded to bring certain things to light because until we receive the understanding of God, we will continue to walk in

usic is an art transmitted through sound and silence. It has also been defined as an artful arrangement of sounds in time. Its common elements are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, meter, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The word is derived from Greek (mousike; "art of the Muses") The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Music ranges from strictly organized compositions (and their recreation in performance), through improvisational music to aleatoric forms. Music can be divided into genres and subgenres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to personal interpretation, and occasionally controversial. Within the arts, music may be classified as a performing art, a fine art and an auditory art. Though opinions and approaches to music differ from one culture or society to the other, even to the extent that there is general lack of consensus in academia as to the true purpose of music, the physical, emotional, social and above all the spiritual benefits and blessings that comes from listening to a godly music is indisputably palpable.

To many people in many cultures, music is an important part of their way of life. Music is much more than a form of entertainment, music identifies races, nationalities and communities. It has far reaching, hypnotic effects on the brain and soul, and can take complete control of the body and the mind. Music can determine the mood of a person or a people. After comprehending its profound effects on the mind, it stands to reason that we must beware, for the effects can be good or evil. Music is like a series of thought waves that can cause men to think and do right or wrong, behave wisely or foolishly. In addition to that, there are sounds that destroy ear drums, shatter light bulbs and crack glass. This clearly demonstrates that, there is a mode or musical sound that can destroy the mind, corrupt morals and debase human nature. In our quest for divine fulfillment, or elevation to a higher consciousness, an unalloyed, chaste communion with God, music not only becomes a medium which we can merely gloss over or pay scant attention. It is something we shouldn’t lose sight of. There is creative power as well as destructive element in sound. And depending on the motive behind how we deliver a particular message through music or how we absorb it, will determine how it will impact on our lifestyles,

The Spirituality Of Music psyche and consciousness. The creative and regenerative power inherent in sound is best exemplified in the biblical book of Genesis. Everything there came from sound. At the dawn of creation, sound yielded all that came into existence, so that nothing was made or accomplished without sound. Life sprung from righteous sound. God evolved the success over evil forces around sound as he instructed our forefathers to blow trumpets anytime they were under oppression. Any time there was war, a special mode of sound war heard and specific instruments were played accompanied by complex dance moves to unsettle the enemy. When the Israelites went to war against the Midianites, they were accompanied by a group of musicians with holy instruments, including the trumpet for the priest. They lifted up a special sound unto God and they were delivered. The African applied the remnant of this ancient wisdom as he played music for the warriors and the Chinese used a frightening sound as they attacked during the Korean war. During the U.S. Calvary’s wars against the American Indians, there was always a trumpet (bugle) player in every company of soldiers. The bugler blew the trumpet for calling assembles, time to get up, time to lie down, time for meal. He even had a tune for solemn moments. But more significant than all of those was when it was time to go to war against their enemy. The sound of the trumpet preceded the battle. He blew a certain musical
sound and they charged forth and fought with unexpected strength and skill, and they won. When the trumpet player fell, fear gripped the soldiers as if victory will not come. Even in scientific circles, the proponents of the big bang theory all concur that there was a massive explosion, big Bang! of gaseous elements billions of years ago which eventually formed the universe. The incorporation of music training from preschool to postsecondary education is common in most parts of the world. Involvement in music is thought to teach basic skills such as concentration, counting, listening, and cooperation while also promoting understanding of language, improving the ability to recall information, and creating an environment more conducive to learning in other areas Music therapists use music and all of its facets—physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual—to help clients to improve or maintain their health. In some instances, the client's needs are addressed directly through music; in others they are addressed through the relationships that develop between the client and therapist. Music therapy is used with individuals of all ages and with a variety of conditions, including: psychiatric disorders, medical problems, physical handicaps, sensory impairments, developmental disabilities, substance abuse, communication disorders, interpersonal problems and ageing. It is also used to improve learning, build self-esteem, reduce stress, support physical exercise, and facilitate a host of other

health-related activities. This raises the grave question of as to whether musicians and music lovers of today really know the power they wield in the society by virtue of the fact that they create and transmit music. Have they assessed the physical, social and the true spirituality of music? Some musicians of today are self-proclaimed homosexuals, rakes and debauchees whose brand of music is heavily influenced by their sexual escapes, drinking and gambling habits. They make explicit references to sex and drugs. There is no denying that, homosexuals, fornicators and pleasure seekers will not go any length to infuse their music with thoughts that emanates from
their lifestyles. Some musicians make unequivocal references to Satan worship in their songs. In our quest for God, we must bring forth a righteous sound upon the instrument, we must halt the onslaught of music that weakens and destroys. The musicians have forsaken God and the people. They no longer understand that their responsibility is not only to entertain and uplift, but also to educate their audiences. Their music make demands on the people and give them vision. The empty, nonsensical songs which deprive the soul of spiritual nutriment must be replaced with music that uplifts the soul and makes communion with God possible.

Now not-for-profit credit union such as Citysave are working with Birmingham Council to promote notfor-profit finance lenders in Birmingham, to turn the tables of payday lenders and to help some of the estimated 35% of children growing up in child poverty in the city. Inequalities, deprivation and poverty still hold many of our fellow citizens back. That’s what Fair Brum a citywide movement, focusing on building a fairer and more inclusive city, wants to change. The Rt Revd Andrew Watson, Bishop of Aston, says: “The Archbishop of Canterbury spoke out against the scandalous rates of interest charged against those who take out loans with payday

loan companies. Having met some of the victims of those charges, I'm determined to support our local credit unions in their excellent work, lending responsible amounts at realistic rates of interest, and not profiting from the struggles of some of the poorest people in our great city.” Councillor John Cotton who is one of the driving forces behind the Fair Brum campaign says: “We know that Birmingham has tremendous strengths—it’s youthful population, its rich heritage and diversity, its spirit of innovation and enterprise. But there are also some real challenges. Birmingham Fair Money is part of this campaign; promoting the services of not-for-profit personal loans organisations in our city.” As part of its commitment to local credit unions St Martin in the Bullring will be hosting a Citysave Kiosk in its Café for a trial period. The kiosks (of which there are over 20 across Birmingham) allow access to financial services and offer help and advice.

The undisputed UK Queen of Gospel was a very deserved of her winner having sung in front of the Queen and other world leaders, and working with the likes of gospel greats, such as Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Destiny's Child, Kylie Minogue, Andrea Bocelli and Donnie McLurkin. Growing up in the church, she has always been around music, considering her mother and sisters as major influences in her career. OCT Lurine, one of 11 children, created her own unique style by fusing rock, R&B and pop into a mesmeric form of gospel music which appeals to a wider audience. A veteran in the industry, she accepted her MOBO award opening her speech with her popular and very powerful 'You Revive Me,' after which saying: “Sometimes we go through things that are hard. Many would argue it is a film that exposed the injustices in deportation full stop, in any part of the world. This is not exclusive to Jamaica, and those of us who are in the know and read the news will know that to be the case. It must also be made clear that this is just a film, and it does not represent the population of Jamaica as a whole. After watching the film I asked myself - if someone was to watch that film, would they be put off from going to Jamaica? Then I had another thought - Would

ou may remember a number of months ago hearing about a couple of speakers from Damson namely the Cisor, and the Twist. With impressive sound, portability and battery the Cisor and Twist both held a place in our hearts at Phoenix HQ. Can the Oyster (no we’re not sure quite why it’s called the Oyster either, it looks nothing like one!) live up to the expectations brought upon it by it’s predecessors?
At £179.99, the Oyster is quite a bit more expensive than Damnson’s previous offerings, but boy does it pack a punch for your money. Sound replication from movies works well, and proves the versatility of the Oyster. All in all, you could do a lot worse than splashing £180 out for the Damson Oyster, but you’ll be hard pressed to find something that looks this sleek, stylish and sophisticated while doing it. rom start to finish it was fantastic,the skating was brilliant and the costumes were something else. It can be difficult enough to stand upon the ice so how the Severn Dwarfs and Cinderella's horse managed to not only stay upright but to skate around deserves a mention. It has got to be hot in there especially being followed by the lighting which was also very good. The stage changes were quick and the stories kept going. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and Rapunzel of which the wire work when Rapunzel and Flynn flew around above the ice was heart in the mouth stuff; absolutely amazing.
Some children actually got to join in being pulled in a cart around the ice by the Seven Dwarfs, which will no doubt be a moment they will never forget. The seating was comfortable and there are no restrictions to any view, the music was clear and not too loud, and each story was introduced by none other than Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and of course Donald Duck. The choreography for all the dance work you could see was especially good when the whole of the cast danced together in the finale. The queues were quickly dealt with and there were no delays in getting into the arena and staff at the NIA are very polite and helpful and deserve a mention also. Inside the arena there was plen-
ty of promotional gifts on offer from cuddly toys to ice drinks, Disney Cups and much more. If Disney is for you then try the VIP experience, you are invited to the NIA 2hrs before the show (no queuing) for that little extra. You receive goody bags for the children and a free programme at the door, great seats, hot food, and mom and dad can relax with a beer or a glass of wine while the children can have squash or fizzy drink. After you have finished eating and drinking one of the cast members will come out in full costume and allow for parents to take photos of their children with the Prince or Princess. WHY NOT CANADA? CONSIDER EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES BEYOND THE UK
F
or a country built upon, and largely maintained by migrants, the UK’s recent apparently ‘anti-immigrant’ stance, with advertisements for ‘illegal immigrants’ to ‘go home’, has left a nasty taste in the mouths of many. In the UK, family immigration has flourished, and EU immigration has substantially increased, however, the government has placed enormous restrictions on those defined as ‘economic migrants’. Simply put, this means that if you are coming to the UK simply to work hard, get a job, start a business, or invest and get a better future, the UK has placed tremendous obstacles or set ex-
tremely high thresholds. Work permits in the UK have been practically non-existent for persons coming from countries which are not in the EU, with some financial requirements for investing being as high as £1,000,000. So what options are there for a migrant who is honest, hard-working, wishes to get a better quality of life for his family but is not an EU citizen. The short answer is….CONSIDER CANADA! Canada is an under-populated country with a high standard of living and has always been welcoming to migrants. A visit to Canada shows there is not the hostility towards migrants as has been shown in the UK in recent times. There is the genuine feeling that Canada nurtures and accepts that persons who are genuinely coming to work build the Canadian economy. As such, there are various opportunities and types of visas available for economic migrants. Thus, in order to go to Canada, you do not need to have any family or relatives in
Canada. Canada has a two tier visa system. You may seek to apply through the ‘Federal government’ or through the ‘Provincial’ programmes. Generally, persons seeking to go to Canada to work will need to check if their occupation is on the list set out by the government. The list changes depending on the skills areas they want to recruit. It is unlike the UK where it appears you have to be a ‘rocket scientist’ to obtain a work permit to enter. Thus, there have been times when there have been plumbers, contractors, pipe fitters, etc. on the list for work permit applicants. Equally, you may migrate to Canada as an Investor with as little as CDN$25,000 (approximately £15,000) as opposed to the exorbitant £50,000 - £1,000,000 required by the UK. Canada has also made it easier for workers to obtain Residence, unlike the UK where Points Based System visas (Tier 1, 2, 4, 5) required a lengthy period before receiving permanent residence. Canadian Provinces (somewhat like US States) also have their
own visa programmes. So, for example, there are programmes for Food Service Industry workers, International Graduates, Trade and semi-skilled employment which may qualify you for a work visa to Canada. Some of the more attractive provinces are British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. With the Provincial programmes (called Provincial Nominee Programmes) persons may seek to move to a particular province and the province has its own set of immigration rules for workers, investors and entrepreneurs. So if an applicant does not meet the general criteria for Canada’s general visa programme, they may meet the requirement for a particular province. It is generally through the Provincial programmes that specific employers may issue work permits. Again, because of its under-population, we know of at least one instance where work permits have been issued for an establishment equivalent to McDonalds! Thus, hospitality workers, food service workers and other blue collar workers can still have hope for economic migration

From 28th October 2013, unless you are exempt, you will be required to pass the Life in the UK Test to obtain ILR or naturalisation, in addition to obtaining a speaking and listening qualification in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at intermediate level. If your application
There is a new Immigration Bill currently making its way through Parliament. The main changes include cutting appeal rights. It will reduce the number of grounds a person can appeal on in order to remain in the UK. This, however, does not affect fundamental rights
and is predominantly targeted at ‘foreign criminals’ (which has a specific meaning in immigration law). The intent by the Government is that persons who have a pending appeal can be removed from the UK first, and their appeal heard later. s we begin another State of the Industry Conference the Caribbean Tourism Organization renews our commitment to marketing “destination Caribbean” and increasing our interaction with and among our members, to their benefit. In line with our mandate to support the goals each member country has set at the national level, at this year’s SOTIC we have chosen to focus on the uniqueness of each Caribbean country and how we can use this to our region’s collective advan-
tage through the theme – Perfecting the Experience; Delivering Authenticity. It is our desire that this conference will help to narrow the focus on aligning what makes each destination special with the many niche markets – established and trending – that we can serve. By doing a better job at matching the most lucrative travel segments with the authentic experiences afforded by each destination we can continue to grow our region’s business. The challenge is to ensure that we execute our strategies in a manner that is sustainable – protecting our vulnerable ecosystems, preserving our cultural integrity and asserting our collective voices to shape international events that affect us. The truth is that individually we have much to offer and much to gain but together we can be a greater force in the marketplace. French-speaking Caribbean country has an ambitious tourist target of one million visitors to its island by 2020. Martinique may appear to be just a small eastern Caribbean island to much more developed parts of the world like the UK. However, it has a tourism master plan which will bring it to achieving a one million mark in tourist arrivals. Martinique is fresh out of hosting the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s (CTO) State of the Industry Conference (SOTIC)an event which brings tourism promotion agencies and Government tourism officials together to exchange ideas with leading tourism experts on issues including standards, visitor satisfaction and regional transportation. “The Martinique Tourism Au-

thority along with Martinique’s Regional Council signed a comprehensive Tourism Reform Plan aiming at welcoming one million visitors by 2020. Over the next three years the Regional Council of Martinique will invest one hundred million dollars to support and develop the island’s tourism industry,” Martinique Tourism Commissioner, Karine Roy-Camille explained during the official opening of SOTIC at the Madiana Convention Centre in Schoelcher- a suburb of FortDeFrance. The destination also expects an increase of tourist arrivals for the 2014/2015 cruise season. Christa Coita of the Martinique Promotions Bureau based New York is confident that their tourist target is attainable. “We have new ships coming. We have the Quantum of the Seas… that will call in Marti-
nique during 2014/2015 cruise season. We have upgraded the the cruise terminals in Port Seamore. We can accommodate very big ships … we revamp another terminal… MSC Cruises is coming to Martinique…. So next year we gonna have 121 calls and more passengers,” Coita told the press. Martinique has committed to improving access to the island by both sea and air to achieve its one million mark goal. “We have new flights since June with Seaborne Airlines four times a week out of San Juan, Puerto Rico. We also have flights with American Airlines; it’s pretty new. We have flights out of Miami on Saturdays nonstop to Fort-De-France. And starting November 27 we’re gonna have a second flight out of Miami (on Wednesdays),” Coita said very thrilled at their accomplishments.

Addressing industry officials at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation State of the Industry Conference (SOTIC 2013) held in Martinique, Governor of the United States Virgin Islands Hon. John de Jongh urged the islands not to regard themselves as mere competitors, but as co-conspirators in a fight for ac-
celerated economic growth. The USVI Governor noted that though the region had survived for many years on “sun, sand and retail”, these areas would take on a completely different connotation going forward. “[It's] going to require... an economic union in terms of travel within our countries... as we begin to look differently and execute differently, things such as cultural and heritage tourism... take on a different connotation be- l Martinique’s Commissioner of Tourism, Karine Roy-Camille greets the USVI Governor as he arrives for the conference. This, he suggested, could be done by capturing their minds through entrepreneurship and small business creation. l The statue represents the first wife of Napoleon, Josephine De Beau of Martinique. The statue’s head was cut off because Martiniquans believed she had enslaved their people on her estate. The replica of blood on the statue reflects the blood of the people she enslaved on her.
l The 18th century St. Louis Catholic Church building is a major tourist site in Schoelcher, Fort De France. It is built with a steel frame to withstand natural disasters.

Aviation Issues On The Front Burner For CTO
T
ravelers to the Caribbean could experience less hassle in the future. At least that’s the assurance coming from Chief Executive Officer of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), Hugh Riley. Riley who was addressing a post news briefing at the State of the Industry Conference (SOTIC) in Martinique said the CTO’s Aviation Task Force is approaching a breakthrough on reducing constraints to intraregional travel. “We’re on the verge on reaching a conclusion on removing some of the hindrances to traveling around (the region). Within the group of the OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) there is a great deal of discussion about going back to the domestic space… It is getting to a conclusion so that we can remove some of the hindrances in terms of entry requirements,”

TACKLING ISSUES
The Aviation Task Force was formed about a year ago under the supervision of United States
Virgin Islands Tourism Commissioner, Beverley NicholsonDoty. CTO's Aviation Task Force seeks to facilitate air travel within and to the Caribbean. The ATF
has even become a place to call to resolve air transportation and access issues, according to Riley. The ATF has as one of its issues to tackle standardizing Embarkation and Disembarkation (ED) Cards when traveling within the region. The ED cards are retained by immigration officials upon each port of entry. “These embarkation/disembarkation cards can be an issue so that’s being tackled within first the OECS group of nine so then we can spread the implementation,” Riley noted. What is even more troublesome for most-if not all travelers- is the consistent rescreening at airports. “It’s been difficult to explain to the public of the Caribbean why they have to take their shoes, and their belts and everything else off every single time they go through various hubs,” the CTO executive said.
STRATEGIZING
A major Aviation meeting is

Caribbean region. ALTA has networks and influence and members that are in South America and this is one of the things we must do if we’re to fulfill our mandate -not just focus on the narrow region.”

The food of Martinique

artinique's cuisine reflects its many cultures. The local Créole specialties combine the finesse of French cuisine with the spice of African cookery and the exoticism of East Indian and Southeast Asian recipes. Fresh seafood appears on most menus. Other specialties include shellfish, smoked fish, stuffed land crabs, stewed conch, and curry dishes. Some are in hotels, some in lovely settings by the sea and some on the front porches of the cooks' homes. Local rum drinks often precede a meal and imported French wines often accompany it. Dining in the French Caribbean is always a memorable event. An exciting variety of restaurants take advantage of gorgeous settings to complement their culi-
nary delights. Cooking in France is an art form and the French Caribbean continues this delicious tradition. Visitors discover a wide range, from classical and nouvelle French cuisine to spicy Créole and local specialties. Le déjeuner, or lunch, is often the main meal of the day and usually served from 12:00 noon to 14:00. Créole cuisine is a delicious mélange of French, African and Indian influences. Exotic seasonings ignite fresh seafood and poultry in prized recipes handed down from generation to generation. If you overindulge and burn your mouth on the hot seasonings, bread (pain) and butter (buerre) will help put out the fire. Local fruits, vegetables and beverages add to the wonderful flavors. t has been announced that two years after severe fire left it with no form of connection to the outside world, billionaire mogul, Sir Richard Branson's private Necker Island will now be powered by Jamaican-based mobile network provider Digicel. Branson, who opted to shift his official residency to the British Virgin Islands, in the Caribbean, oversaw the recent renovation of The Great House on the property after a devastating fire in 2011 that destroyed much of the infrastructure with Digicel BVI Business Solutions Manager, Matthew Drum, saying the company has provided Necker, a 74-acre property, with top-class technology and recovery services.

ngland international Daniel Sturridge fulfilled a life-long dream by launching a foundation, in his name, in the land of his grandparents, Jamaica. Taking the form of a massive family fun day at a Faith Basic School in Portmore, in St. Catherine, the Liverpool striker, together with his parent, was present to witness the ‘Sturridge Family Foundation Sports Day’ to encourage local youngsters to play sport. This is the first activity for the Foundation in Jamaica which aims to build on this initiative in the future.
Showing great passion and commitment to the cause, a very proud Sturridge said: “Our family has strong links in Jamaica with both my grandparents coming from there, so it was great to be able to give back to the local community. My grandfather and family were all out there helping out at the event and we were very happy with what we saw.” Playing their part in the Foundation and the Fun Day is leading mobile telecommunications giants, Digicel, expressed their pleasure of being onboard with sponsorship manager, Tahnida Nunes, saying: “As a leading
supporter of sports in Jamaica and the region, Digicel was invited to come on board as a lead sponsor of the venture. IFA vice-president, Jeffrey Webb, has called on English football to address the lack of coaching and management opportunities for ethnic minorities. He warned that Black and ethnic minority players who would like a future in the game after retirement are “demoralised” by the status quo. Webb, who heads the governing body’s anti-racism task force, believes the lack of nonwhite managers is an issue which needs to be looked at immediately. The Premier League is one of the most culturally diverse divisions on the planet but has been overwhelmingly dominated by white managers. Norwich City’s Chris Hughton is the only Black manager in the top flight and Blackpool’s Paul Ince and Charlton Ath-
letic’s Chris Powell are the only Black managers in the Football League. Webb, who has been meeting senior players during a visit to England, suggested there was a growing disenchantment among professionals: “There’s a lot of young players coming through and I understand that over 30% of the league is made up of people of African descent and over 71 different nationalities playing in the Premier League, but it’s not reflected, they’re not getting an opportunity to manage. “The game must reflect society and the community it serves," he said. "Players are becoming very demoralised and these are issues of course that we hope the FA and Premier League will take on board.” FA Chair, Greg Dyke, was recently criticised by board
member Heather Rabbatts for a perceived lack of diversity in his commission on the future of the English game. His initial eight-strong panel was entirely comprised of white men, although Manchester United’s Rio Ferdinand was later added to the group. An outspoken advocate for more Black and ethnic representation in the higher echalance of English football, Reading’s Jason Roberts, met with Webb who also talked to Manchester City’s Yaya Toure, about the racist abuse he faced from CSKA Moscow fans during a Champions League match in Russia. Webb is in line, as the favourite, to take over as FIFA president when present incombent, Sepp Blatter, finally retires.
Nuttall takes up Qatar role

ritish Athletics’ Endurance Coach, John Nuttall, has left the UK for pastures new in the Gulf. Nuttall, who worked as a lead coach at the National Performance Institute in Loughborough has accepted a new role as Head Coach at the Aspire Academy in Qatar. The former endurance athlete joined Terrence Mahon in the endurance coach role in December and the pair had been due to see the programme through to Rio 2016 and the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London. “The British Athletics Endurance Programme has gone
from strength to strength over the past few years and it’s been a privilege to have been involved in some of the success stories,” said Nuttall. “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with some worldclass athletes on the track, cross-country and road both at training venues and major championships around the world. The time is right for me to move on to a fresh challenge. I wish British Athletics all the best in the future.” British Athletics Performance Director Neil Black said: “On behalf of British Athletics I would like to place on
record our thanks to John who has been a great support to the endurance programme in recent years and leaves it in very good health.” Nuttall, who was endurance lead for the 2012 Olympic Games, is the former coach to 2010 Eu-

Birmingham Students Take Part In National Student Raceday

group of students from Bimingham University took part in the first ever National Student Raceday, in October, as part of an initiative from Great British Racing designed to encourage a younger generation of racing fans. Taking place at Wolverhampton Racecourse it had student, Jake Wright, saying: “We had a great evening on National Student Raceday. Not only has it been great value, the action on the track has been really good as it was also the start of the All-Weather Championships. It is something I’m sure I’ll do again.” David Roberts, Managing Director of Wolverhampton Racecourse said: “We are delighted to be involved in supporting the National Student Raceday and hope it will become an annual
event”. In total, more than 1000 students from over 30 universities took part in UK’s first ever National Student Raceday. Champion Akufo to reclaim world title in Birmingham

n what promises to be one of the year's biggest fight nights in Birmingham this year, Simon Akufo will be fighting for the World Kickboxing Association welterweight title against Italian champion Cristian Tronu next month. Reigning European champion Akufo will become world champion for the second time if he wins and is expected to do it in front of over 1,000 adoring fans. Simon, aged 31, is determined to be world champion again after losing his belt in a brutal battle against Ilya Usachev laast year. He said: “I still see the world belt as my title, I made a mistake when I was at the top but I have learnt my lessons.
I refused to quit so took a step back and am now ready to be world champion again. I cannot wait to show everyone where I belong.” Italian champion Tronu fights out of the world renowned Ferrari Gym in Calgiari, Sardinia, and has a reputation for devastating finishing power. Akufo said: “This will be a great fight, I know what the fans expect of me when they come to my fights and I am going to give it to them. Birmingham is a kickboxing city, renowned for producing world champions and its people are used to big shows and this will be the biggest yet."
