Library of Birmingham – an ode to the city W hen Malala Yousafzai officially opened the Library of Birmingham, she called it the city’s ‘beating heart.’ She said: “Books are weapons to beat terrorism. The only way to global peace is reading knowledge and education. Books are precious." The teenager who was treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital after she was shot in the head, in Pakistan, by the Taliban for championing women's rights, placed her copy of Paolo Coelho’s “The Alchemist” in the library – making it the last book to go on the shelves, after which, the adopted ‘Brummie’ was given membership to access the archive. With a collection of one million books, more than 200 public access computers, theatres, an exhibition gallery and music rooms, the Library of Birmingham is already its iconic presence for the city described as the

“beating heart of England,” by Malala. Designed to face up to the future, the £189m building is “an ode to the 21st century, says Library director Brian Gambles."It’s a fusion of the digital and the traditional, which is absolutely essential to the vision of the library we have. It’s a re-invention of the library; facing up to the future, yet not forgetting the past, which is essential to the vision of the library we have.” 16-year-old Malala said: "A city without books in a city without a library is like a graveyard." The building also contains the Shakespeare Memorial Room, home to a collection of 43,000 books, including copies of the Bard's First, Second, Third and Fourth Folio editions. It has nine floors - three of which are out of bounds to the public, can hold 3,000 people and has a brown roof garden with wild flower meadow

Culture Minister Ed Vaizey and the city's Lord Mayor, Mike Leddy, joined Malala and library architect Francine Houben to officially open the building, while brass band Super Critical Mass played inside. "It is written that a room without books is like a body without a soul. A city without a library is like a graveyard," said Malala. "This proves that this city loves me and I love it too," she said. The 333,000 sq ft library is clad partly in gold and covered in 5,357 interlocking metal circles supposed to re-

flect the values of universality, timelessness and unity. Dutch architect Francine Houben, founding partner and Creative Director of Mecanoo Architecten, who designed the building, was among the guests at the opening.

Statue of Hindu God installed at popular Midland Temple “

W

e strive to embrace everyone, regardless of colour or creed. This festival is an opportunity for people from diverse communities to come even closer.” – Dr Narayan Rao, Trustee, Shri Venkateswara Balaji Temple A major three-day festival was conducted at the Balaji Temple in the Midlands to mark the installation of a large statue of the Hindu God, Lord Ayyappan. The festival at The Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple, in Tividale, one of Britain’s landmark places of worship, attracted scores of people from all walks of life, reflecting the region’s multicultural make-up and conducted by priests specially flown in from India giving devotees an opportunity to witness and take part in rituals that have been developed over centuries. Lord Ayyappan is the divine child born to Vishnu and Shiva, Lords of destruction and peace and truth, respectively, according to Hindu mythology and the bespoke statue, the biggest outside of India, was prepared there and previously laid at the temple. Dr Narayan Rao, Chair of the Trustees said the management team, volunteers and regular devotees to the temple were very excited about the festival. He said: “This was a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity and we felt honoured to host this remarkable event and educational opportunity, but also one which celebrated the rich culture and heritage of south India.” The Balaji Temple, which celebrates its seventh anniversary, has attracted high-profile visitors in-

A cluding Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands Paul Sabapathy CBE, former Archbishop of Canterbury The Right Reverend Dr Rowan Williams, the Hinduja brothers and several politicians. A not-for-profit organisation, the temple is run mainly by volunteers and receives funding from generous donors. Throughout the year, it celebrates key Hindu festivals including Diwali and Shivratri and in addition, it hosts interfaith activities such as Health & Wellbeing Day and Interfaith Week. It acts as an ambassador of the Hindu faith. Last year the temple was visited by more than 7,000 schoolchildren. Other activities include an annual Youth Camp, Volunteers Day, dance and various other themed classes, for people of all ages.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE ADVERTORIAL

The Five Wealth Secrets 96% of Us Don't Know

D

uring my recent holiday my constant companion for those 7 days was a brilliant book by Craig Hill, called 'Five Wealth a Secrets 96% of us a Don't Know. These secrets have their origins in the bible. Here is what I discovered: 1. Keep your money in 5 jars (accounts) 2. Focus on vision (then provision comes) 3. Invest in things that multiply and never pay interest (use no personal debt) 4. Anticipate and prepare for cyclical economy 5. Leave an inheritance for your grandchildren

Secret Number 1

Place your money in 5 accounts and decide on a proportion for each account. The 5 accounts could be named: 1 = Tithes (10%); 2 = Offerings (10%); 3 = Savings (10%); 4 = Investing (20%) and 5 = Spending (50%). Voluntarily limit your spending to the proportion set aside for each account and never rob the money in one account to pay / fund an activity in another account (especially the spending account). Practising the allocation of your money in their respective percentages will build discipline over time and develop the spirit of meekness/flexibility.

Secret Number 3 Part 2

Invest money, time and energy in people who are reliable and are multipliers. Give specific qualification tests to identify reliable multipliers. Then invest in these faithful multipliers, and do not invest time, money or energy in those who fail the test or don't respond to the opportunity given. Multiplier - someone who is able to produce more value or profit than what they started with, or what has been invested in them. (Example: team building)

Secret Number 4

Understand that the economy is cyclical and not linear. Therefore, always and anticipate and prepare for the next phase of the economic cycle. Learn how to prosper equally when the economy is shrinking as you do when the economy is growing.

Secret Number 5

Plan to leave an inheritance to your grandchildren. Design and execute a strategy to ensure that neither your grandchildren nor any future generations will ever need to borrow money from a bank and pay interest for a house.

Secret Number 2

Focus on vision not provision. Discover your purpose and calling from God. Choose your profession or career according to your calling, not money! then pursue your profession or calling with all your heart and expect provision to naturally follow your vision. (Pro - prefix meaning to follow. vision - root meaning a mental concept of a distinct or vivid kind) If you have a specific vision to accomplish a purpose, and you are able to clearly explain that vision, many people will invest their money in your vision. However, if you do not have a vision or are unable to clearly spell out your idea, then no one will invest in your vision.

Secret Number 3 Part 1

Invest only in things that multiply. Never borrow money to purchase a depreciating asset or to invest in something that doesn't increase the value of the asset or cash flow significantly more than the cost of the interest you must pay to borrow the money. Many of us fail to observe this secret at our peril. How many financial masters do you have, and how do they affect your life? if you carry debt, what kind of emotional pressure has that debt created for you? How does it feel? If you are married, how has debt created trouble and stress between you and your spouse? What is your plan to eliminate debt, or if you have no plan, what is your plan to get some help to create a debt elimination plan?

Stand for Something! Fall for Nothing!

Ammo’s

N

ow that’s not the way the motto runs, of course, I know that. But; “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for everything” doesn’t have the snap to move the masses in Cameron’s Britain. And anyway, I like my verbs to be right out in front - they’re the doing words, after all, like the little entrepreneurs in every sentence. This column is all about creative entrepreneurs - real life people - and what - if anything - we really stand for. We just saw the legend that Jesse Jackson in the New Library of Birmingham and he was talking about equal rights, civic pride in a recession, making a stand point and all things political. But the cost of doing this and business is rising; infrastructure, travel, food, heat and tax costs are squeezing out cash we’d rather spend innovating,

making change or taking advantage of new technologies. But Birmingham needs to be about more than a balance sheet, we need to show we’ve got some character, that we can stand up for causes that matter to us and not just the bottom line (and stop talking up the Jaws of Doom). This way we’ll show young people that the business community can be, and always has been - a force for positive change in Birmingham. And I’m not talking about people like Matthew Boulton or the Lunar Society - I think we’ve heard enough about them. It’s easy to be a billionaire philanthropist if you’ve invented the steam engine, patented oxygen, mint coins in your shed and live in a stately home. The Lunar Society were the Bruce Wayne’s of history, not typical businessmen. Birmingham’s everyday entrepreneurs innovated, created employment and wealth, and supported (or debated) Birmingham’s Chartists, Abolitionists, Suffragettes and civic leaders. And finally our moment has come - I’ve been down in London, supporting the campaign to keep Black music alive with more people (like you and me)

taking up strategic positions in the music industry. I’ve been helping as I’m able; with the media, with behind the scenes organisation. It’s this experience has charged my thinking this month, but I don’t want to soapbox here; if you want to get involved tweet us on @ punchrecords Punch has a major UK tour unpacking the great Martin Luther King Speech :I have a Dream” to help launch multiple Black History months across the country. We need to look at how history shapes our future but always looking to the youth for inspiration - see you in a city over the October period

ho would have believed that in 2012 a youngster from Trelawny who was setting National School records at age 15 would be 6 times Olympic Champion , now a global superstar with an iconic pose that you see every man woman and child trying to imitate at any event they are at. From that same Island a little girl that use to follow her mother to market would eventually become double Olympic Champion. London sold athletics to the World on the back of the little island of Jamaica who held the highest accolade in athletics by boasting the fastest man and woman in the world after the 2012 games. They then came to London and made history by doing what no man or woman had ever done before, never mind in the same era and from the same island.

As athletes know once you have made a high achievement your mind soon has to focus to the next task in hand, as there is ALWAYS someone trying to take your crown. With London over, the next stop was the Diamond League and the World Athletics Championship in Moscow, Russia from 10–18 August 2013, where all eyes again would be expecting all who hail under that ‘special’ flag to deliver. Usain Bolt entered the arena as 6 times Olympic Champion with his 3 golds from Bejing 2008 in the 100 & 200 metres and the 4x 100 relay in which he duly repeated to show he was no fluke at London 2012. However holding on to his 6th gold medals and titles one thing was sure missing from his accolades, and that was the 100 metre World Title that he had to surrender to his training partner Yohan Blake who went on to win the gold after Bolts false

start in Deagu in 2011. Although he went on to win the 200 metres and the 4x100 relay in Deagu was missing that one title. Enter 2013 and although I am sure Usain would have like to have lined up against the man that held the title he coveted. Unfortunately due to injury Yohan Blake would miss out on Moscow and the latest scandal surrounding Asafa Powell also ruled him out as a contender to this title. On the night of the 100 metres, everyone says it is a sign as the only camera set at the finish line caught the ‘BOLT’ of lightening as he became World Champion, as Warren Weir came in 2nd making it a Jamaica 1,2. He was then to close the games with the final race of the Championships with his 3rd Gold. Whist all eyes have been on Usain, underneath the radar slipped the ‘Little Pocket Rocket’ as she is now fondly known. At just 5ft tall, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce is however known

for her explosive starts. Ironically the press were the first to highlight how many non Jamaicans at the World Championships were boasting the colours of this small nation and waving the flags. Fraser Pryce clearly had her eye on the gold as she entered the arena whilst all the talk was about her ‘pink hair’. Commentating before 100 metres race for the BBC at the championships, former Canadian 100 metres Olympic Champion Donovan Bailey ( who is by birth Jamaican) declared that Fraser Pryce is the fast man OR woman he had ever seen run 0 to 30 metres. Fraser Pryce is in a class of her own, as the race was won by the 30 metre mark leaving her rivals in her wake. In the 200 metres much had been made about the USA Star Allyson Felix. Fraser Pryce will admit she is still learning the techniques of this race, but showed her dominance and focus when Felix limped out of the race early on, as Fraser-Pryce raced through for her 2nd gold, before achieving her 3rd gold by running the anchor leg in a once again different quartet for the Jamaica’s 4x100 team (Carrie Russell, Kerron Stewart, Schillonie Calvert, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce) setting a championship record while beating the Olympic Champions USA into 2nd place, their smiles said it all.

There was a strong interest with 8 countries from Africa and the Caribbean. The World Youth Netball Championships comprised of 70 games, held over a 10-day period. Every team played 7 games, and every team will be awarded a placing from 1st to 20th as a result. Jamaica Sunshine juniors lead by Senior and Youth coach Oberon Pitterson give their all to get to the semi fi-

nals where they would face New Zealand in a grueling contest. They faced their toughest opponent and sadly in the semi finals where Jamaica suffered a blow as their on form shooter Shantel Slater snapped her ACL in this cruicial game. The Sunshine Youngsters lost out only by 7 goals to New Zealand. As they left the court, coach Oberon Pitterson said of the 5344 loss, “I am so proud of them, I could kiss them all; they gave me everything now we have to prepare for the match with England” The other semi final between England and Australia was a much more one sided affair with England being defeated 67-33, bringing them face to face with the sunshine youngsters This head on clash between Jamaica and England is always an

Fraser Pryce is equally capable on the track as she is off it has she recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Child and Adolescent Development When receiving her Degree, Fraser Pryce said in all her achievements on the track this was her greatest achievement which brought tears to her eyes as she as the first member in her family to gain a degree. Keeping it real Shelly Anne said she would like to be a child psychologist or counsellor and own her own child centres, working with children with learning disabilities or childhood disorders. In Jamaica there is a high need for this care, but funds are an issue. With only the Commonwealth games to focus on next year the Pocket Rocket will look to higher heights in the academic field as she plans to take her masters. What next for Shelly-Ann,

entertaining contest. In the Jamaican defence Sterling continued to look incredibly impressive, dominating rebounds and claiming countless intercepts. This stalled any potential chance of a miracle comeback and as the clock ticked down the destination of the bronze medal became more and more inevitable. A ferociously hard fought bronze medal play-off ended in heartbreak for England as a tough competition finally took its toll and the youngsters in red were forced to settle with fourth place overall. A stern Jamaican defence led their side to a 52-33 victory in front of a boisterous crowd in Glasgow. As the final whistle sounded, the Jamaica bench emptied and

well her husband feels she could run for a seat in Parliament and Shelly Anne does not rule this out as she said when you are called to something that is just your role. She feels she has been given her talent to be a leader but feels there is much more in store. Should the RT Hon Portia Simpson Miller be afraid, as one of Jamaica traditional sayings IS ‘We likkle but we Tallawa’. Sounds like this description fits the fastest woman in world!! Their tally of medals which included a Silver for Warren Weir in the 200 metres, and silver for the 4x400 relay team and a Bronze for Nesta Carter in the 100 metres, helping Jamaica to finish 3rd in the Medal table with 9 medals, and 6 Golds between the World’s fastest man AND woman, to give this little but tallawa island a great end to the championship.

the on-court dancing began. A dejected England side had given their all but fell cruelly short and just missed out on a medal. It has been a tough competition for the team with player absences increasing the workload on those who remained fit. The championship had another high for the Sunshine team from Jamaica as the President of the Jamaica Netball Association (JNA), Marva Bernard, has received a service award from the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA). In her words "It's a good feeling to be recognised for what we love to do," It's not like work, it's fun. It's a lot of work, but you enjoy it. I am happy that this award has been bestowed on me, and I will just continue working." said Bernard.

Changes to Legal Aid System

S

ignificant changes to civil legal aid in England and Wales came into effect on 1 April 2013, as part of a plan to reform the system and save £350m a year. Whilst the government has recently announced a u-turn on introducing price competition in the criminal legal aid market, other cuts to legal aid are expected to go ahead. Since April nearly all family law advice has been removed from the legal aid scheme. This means people can no longer get funding for divorce or child contact or residence disputes. The changes mean victims of domestic violence must have proof before they can get legal aid for family cases. What options do people have? Many people will have to pay privately for advice or use nowin, no-fee lawyers (where this is an option), seek support from one of a number of charities that offer legal help, or represent themselves in trying to solve

bono – providing legal assistance and support for free to those who would not be able to access it otherwise. In some countries, such as the USA, there are compulsory pro bono schemes in place which require lawyers to carry out a minimum number of pro bono hours. However, in England and Wales pro bono is voluntary. Pro bono complements, but is not a substitute for, legal aid. There will be many lawyers who would object to providing previously funded work for free.

However, if each lawyer was able to provide some assistance on a pro bono basis, this could go a long way to enabling the most vulnerable members of our society receive access to justice, described by Ken Clark as the “hallmark of a civilised society”. OVERSTAYED IN THE UK? KNOW THE STEPS TO LEGALISE YOUR STAY

B

eing an ‘illegal immigrant’ in any country, can be difficult. It raises fear and opens vulnerable persons to abuse because of that fear, as they may feel they have no one to turn to because of their immigration situation. ‘Illegal immigrants’ or overstayers, are persons in the UK who do not have the legal right to live, work, or claim benefits in the UK. Usually, a person has entered the UK as a visitor, student or otherwise, and the time limit they were given has expired and they haven’t obtained legal status in another category.

Equally, persons may have been in the UK legally, e.g., as a spouse/ partner, or received Discretionary Leave to Remain, but their leave expired and they did not renew it. Whatever the reason, the best course of action is to at least seek advice by way of an initial consultation, in order to know exactly what your legal options are. Just because you have overstayed your time in the UK, does not mean that hope is lost. Despite attacks by some on the nature of Human Rights, the UK remains a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights and, therefore, gives respect to the terms of the Convention. As an overstayer in the UK, you have various options depending on your individual circumstances. Each individual’s situation is unique. Although you may know someone with a similar set of circumstances, that’s all it is - - similar. The biggest mistake is to believe that your circumstances are exactly as someone

else’s and just because they were successful in their application (or worse, failed in their application) the same thing will happen to you. That is not necessarily the case. The most common type of application to make as an overstayer, is one for Further Leave to Remain in the UK. This will involve consideration of your circumstances, usually on the basis of a partner in the UK, any child or children you have in the UK, or your family life in the UK. Thus, if you are married or in a civil partnership, or you have lived with your partner for at least two years, you may well be able to legalise your stay on that basis. Equally, if you have children in the UK, with whom you have a relationship (and you have access to the children), again, you may use this as a basis to submit an application to remain in the UK legally. The concept of human rights and ‘family life in the UK’ is a powerful one. It requires the UK Immigration authorities to consider your entire circumstances in the UK and determine, based on those circumstances, whether your right to ‘family life’ in the UK is strong

enough that you can remain in the UK. Thus, if your entire family base is in the UK, you are under medical treatment in the UK, or there will be extremely difficult challenges for you to return to your home country, it may be possible to make an application to remain in the UK legally based on your ‘family life in the UK’. This is not an easy route and so your personal circumstances must be individually assessed. If your overstaying in the UK has included domestic violence, then there is a possibility for an application based on that ground. However, the requirements are very specific, and it does require documentary evidence. Thus, questions will be raised as to whether or not there has been any reports. If not, why not? But if you are genuinely the victim of domestic violence, even in the absence of such documentary evidence, and based on your entire circumstances, this is a possibility. Your overstaying may have been as a result of conflict or persecution in your home country. If that is the case, there is the possibility of legalising your stay by making

RECENT IMMIGRATION UPDATE

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) Requirements to Change – Act NOW to avoid Difficulties From 28th October 2013, unless you are exempt, you will be required to pass the Life in the UK Test to obtain ILR, in addition to obtaining a speaking and listening qualification in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at intermediate level. If your application falls into the family category, this will affect you. As

such, for those wishing to avoid the expense, time and difficulty of taking both tests, then you need to submit your application NOW as you may only need to complete the ESOL. Contact us in London or Birmingham for more details.

Visa ‘Security Bond’ – Still to be finalised The government’s intention to introduce ‘security bonds’ for visitors coming to the UK from

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Ghana has come up against harsh criticism and there appears to be some ‘backtracking’ with officials insisting it will not affect everyone applying from these countries, rather, it will only affect persons considered ‘high risk’. Therefore, consideration will be on a case by case basis. There is still no agreement on the final sum which will be required but it is expected to

take effect in November 2013. We will keep you updated. And Finally… The Immigration UK Partnership has now partnered with Vesey Solicitors in Birmingham. Villa star running again for Sickle Cell

F

ormer Aston Villa striker, Mark Walters, will be tackling the BUPA Great Birmingham Run again, later this month. The ex-Holte End hero will be taking on the half-marathon, for a second year, raising funds for Sickle Cell Anaemia Research.

Diabetes sufferers told to “cut down on juices”

D

iabetes sufferers eat plenty of fruit, knowing, according to the medical profession, that it’s great in the fight against the disease. Now, however, questions are being raised over the consumption of it, especially for those people with type 2. With the number set to exceed five million in the next ten years, experts are fearing a diabetes ‘tsunami’ in Britain, with 10% of the nation suffering the deadly disease very shortly after. Startling revelations show that sufferers should cut out consuming fruit juices with it seen as high risk whilst eating unprocessed fruit a great option in the fight against type 2. Following expert international examination, the British Medical Journal has showed that replacing juices with pure fruits can reduce the risk of diabetes by up

to a third in many cases. There is a misconception that type 2 diabetes is a mild condition and not one to worry about, but, with added complications, can cause kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, blindness or limb amputation. A spokesperson from the Department of Health quoted: “It is

vitally important that we treat the link between fruit, on the whole, and type 2 diabetes with extreme caution.” The Department is working alongside the food industry, targeting families with advice on improving diets through healthier eating and increasing exercising.

The former England international will be taking on the 13mile run, saying: “I’m looking forward to running the BUPA half-marathon again. Ever since retiring from football I’ve been keeping fit through coaching, playing squash and also playing in charity games. I was always looking to do a half-marathon. To be able to do so on my door step and for

a very worthy cause just made sense to me.” Walters, 49, who also played for Glasgow Rangers, Liverpool, Swindon and Bristol Rovers, is now a fully-qualified coach, coaching with the English FA and sharing his vast wealth of experience around the world. Sickle Cell Anaemia disease affects millions of people worldwide, most common

among people from Africa, Mediterranean countries, the Caribbean, India and Spanishspeaking regions in South and Central America. To support the ongoing research into Sickle Cell Anaemia, you can sponsor Mark on:www.justgiving.com/MarkWalters4SickleAnemia

any of us will remember a game on the Sega Mega Drive all those years ago, called ‘Castle of Illusion starring Micky Mouse’. So step forward 23 years and Sega have reimagined this classic with up to date graphics, clever used of 3D depth and a number of tweaks taken from games this side of its original release. With smooth controls and beautiful scenery, Castle of Illusion takes you straight back to your childhood as you guide Mickey through each

gloriously re-imagined level with ease. Mickey Mouse has had his darling Minnie captured by the witch Mizrabel to transfer her beauty and youth. So off Mickey wanders, content that the titular Castle of Illusion will be where he will find his sweet princess. If there is one negative thing to say about CoI, it’s that it has a very straight learning curve, in

as much as there isn’t one. Whilst the nostalgia will keep you playing, it won’t be for the difficulty,

as you can sleep-game your way through the game. All in all Castle of Illusion is

a fun remake of a classic that makes for a child-friendly game even 23 years later. Nostalgia will only get you so far with a remake, and without the rose-tinted glasses on, skipping his way through Castle of Illusion is sadly a rather dreary experience. A fun game for what it is, but what it is past the nostalgia isn’t all that. 6/10

he Butler starring Oprah Winfrey, Forest Whitaker, Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr, and many others, easily brought its gross revenue to more than $52 million after its second week of release, with experts saying the film will easily break $100 million. The success of the film, which was directed by Lee Daniels, has been credited to strong reviews, positive word-of-mouth via social media, and great timing as the release was during the weekend which marked the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King's March on Washington. In the film, Forest Whitaker stars as Cecil Gaines, an African-American who works as a butler for 34 years in the White House and eyewitnesses many notable events of the 20th century. Oprah Winfrey stars as Gloria Gaines, Cecil's wife. Terrence Howard stars as Howard,

t was a slight shock to most people when Ashton Kutcher announced he was playing the part of Steve Jobs, However if you compare him to steve jobs younger days it makes sense as anyone could see the instant resemblance anyone would of thought they was twins. It's a great film. Even if you aren't an Apple fan it doesn't matter because it's such a incredibly well put together movie. To actually become Steve Jobs, Ashton even took his diet into consideration and he genuinely became Steve Jobs for his role which was incredible. It's such a unique role from Ashton. I was genuinely surprised but I wasn't because it still maintains the witty comments

that we know and love from the actor himself however there is also a serious side which was absolutely incredible. This movie is recommended purely on the basis that even if you don't know or like Steve Jobs it's an absolutely great insight to his life without a

shadow of doubt. It's a great movie nevertheless the camera angles were excellent, locations are incredible. Although it's a good movie, I wouldn't state it's the world's greatest movie. It's a movie I would most likely watch again

but not one to watch over and over. Overall this movie was a great watch especially if you are someone who isn't sure about Apple's history. I would recommend it most definitely. Overall rating 7/10

egendary singer, Bob Marley was originally a farmer and now, his son, Rohan, is reliving that aspect of his father’s life with the launch of Marley Coffee which is kicking up a storm.

Inspired by his religious beliefs, Rastafarian, Rohan uses the finest beans from around the world. These are grown organically in Jamaica’s Blue Mountain coffee region with the highest level in ethical practice - using beans sourced from around the world including: Ethiopia, Indonesia, South America and Central America. “Ethiopia is the birth of coffee and the birth of Rastafari so this is a spiritual thing for me,” says the visionary with a passion that is hard to surpass. Jamaican-born Marley, who moved from Jamaica to America when he was 12, is using coffee as a vehicle to eventually retail it worldwide. “This is not a Jamaican coffee company,” he says, “It’s an international coffee company.”

Yes Ian how you doing mate still looking fresh I see what’s the secret? Having a young wife, and living life as it’s meant to be lived. Laughing ! What has been the most emotional experience for you in your career in terms of achievement? Taking the England number 9 shirt of the peg in the dressing room and knowing I had the privilege of partnering Gary Lineker up front. The teams you played for, were they who you supported growing up? No I supported Millwall as a kid, and I am sure people know Arsenal are my team. How did you get on with Will Smith? I could just imagine the

energy between the two of you. Wooow!!! We got on very well. He loved my Oliver Sweeney brown suede shoes so much I bought him a pair. He wanted mine but I am a size 7 and he is a size 12. He said “man you must have a small dick” Tell me out of all the interviews you have done which ones did you most enjoyed and why? Denzel Washington, he is a hero of mine. I would have loved to have been able to interview Richard Prior. Did you see yourself going into TV when it happened, or did you just think I am a footballer? No, I was actually thinking about what my future could possibly hold.

lready one of Birmingham’s biggest names in entertainment, Mark Dwayne’s massive popularity went above and beyond as he celebrated his 35th birthday with ‘one or two’ friends.

Footballer, pundit, celebrity and all-around nice guy Ian Wright talks with Mark Dwayne about his life. I know you’re into Caribbean food, so apart from home cooking which you cant beat, which takeaway would you plug in London or Birmingham? Would have to be Jerk City

on Wardour Street Soho. http://www.jerkcity.co.uk/. I would recommend that they open one in Birmingham. To read the full exclusive interview with Ian Wright, check out the September edition of Street Cred!

With his ‘Swish’ night, at the city’s Arca Bar, already well established on the Birmingham night scene, his birthday ball is one people are still talking about to this day. The ‘Mark Dwayne Black & White Birthday Ball’ was arguably the biggest thing seen in the city for some time. It was everything that you would expect for Street Cred founder, Mark, Topping the night was seeing R&B legends, Damage, strolling in, at the strike of 12 midnight, fronted by long-time friend and supporter, Mark, creating joyful pandemonium as Jade, Andrez Rahsaan and Noel made their surprise appearance, as special guests, at the party to beat all parties, in Birmingham’s China Town. With tears and drinks flowing in equal measures, all attendees certainly played their part in the night’s celebrations. The ‘Mark Dwayne Black & White Birthday Ball’ was definitely one held at the top of the

aving fully established itself in North Birmingham, as a premier hair design salon and treatment clinic, you can now find The Hand of God Hair Dressing Salon & Barber in the centre of the city, which gives men and women from a wider geographical scope, the ideal opportunity to get the greatest in up front styles, whilst, at the same time, giving your hair the best, organic treatment, keeping very much in the condition God meant it. After creating such a massive stir in Perry Barr, Hair Treatment Specialist, Clotilde Telewane’s

quite unique in her defiance in using chemical products on natural, God-given hair and scalps. As it has been inundated with client inquiries, on a regular basis, the qualified clinical adviser was left with no option other than to expand and be more central. Now on the constantly busy Corporation Street thoroughfare, The Hand of God is central in every way and, for Clotilda, this means greater awareness, for a wider cross-section of Birmingham and the West Midlands, plus a greater opportunity to pass her specialist, quality clinical treatment experience on to the next generation; “You’ll be surprised

to find how few hair salons can lay claim to being qualified whilst saying they have your hair and scalp’s best interest at heart. My duty is to make sure the next generation of hairdressers are fully qualified in and mindful of natural hair and scalp conditions and how to maintain its rich moisturized condition. Especially living here in Europe, the diverse climate has an effect on people’s hair. “It’s the way God planned it,” she would say. Endorsed by the NHS, Clotilda’s aim is for women, and men, to really value their own, natural hair; “People want to look nice, but if the hairdresser doesn’t

know how to look after natural hair, that’s dangerous,” she says. Women, and men, are always looking for the next big ‘style,’ and will always, seemingly, go to extreme measures to keep up with the latest trends and that includes hair. Catering for men, women and children, The Hand of God is always ahead of the game, but, unlike too many of her rivals, Clotilda makes sure to put her clients’ health and wellbeing above everything else. With Street Cred Sub Editor/ Photographer, Gordon Munro – Gordy Pix has been by Mark’s side for a decade now – also wife, Bridget, making the trip from London to be part of the night; it was almost too much to take for the host. Having him there was the icing on the cake for Mark. Keeping himself together, though, with both his Street Cred team and massive number of regular Swish followers by his side, Mark Dwayne showed the Damage boys true Birmingham love, leaving them with the best option available to them, after singing some of their biggest hits, plus ‘Happy Birthday’ to Mark - that was to spend the rest of the night dancing and partying away in the most comfortable of atmospheres that is Swish! BLACK HISTORY FUTURE MONTH First of all, great job with Studio Zoo, how do you felt it went? I’m still at the stage where I’m asking people loads of questions, like “What was it like to watch?” and “What was it like to watch and then get the album at the end?” But yeah I’m still trying to work out exactly what, because no one had done it before. Where did the idea for livestreaming Studio Zoo come from? It was my managers idea, it started really small like “Can we stream part of the recording process?” and I thought probably, but we probably wouldn’t be able to do it with sound, I thought there would be all kinds of latency issues. But the way it ended up was so much bigger than I think anyone thought it could be with the four cams. The level of involvement was fascinating. Just as an artist, being able to hear people commenting on something as it’s coming together, it’s very strange!

The Phoenix - October 2013

The Cosmopolitan Cutting Edge Entertainment Magazine Which instrument is your favourite to play? I really want to get better at using the Guzheng, which is used on Plastic Hearts, and it’s just so much fun to play. I’d love to do a song just with it, but it’s really hard. Is there any instrument that you can’t play at all that you really want to learn? I’d love to play something kinda brassy, but I had a BMX accident when I was a kid, so I don’t have much lip on one side, it just kinda tapers off, it’s really funny. But when I did try and blow into a trumpet, all the air just came out one of the sides. So I don’t think I can ever play the trumpet, unless I find some sort of weird sideways style. “The digital industry is the future and opportunities for young BME’s are waiting to be taken.” Explains 23 year old digital entrepreneur Micah Adams

lthough tales of success among the black community appear to be far and few, according to the media, we know there’s a lot going on behind closed doors. The Phoenix Newspaper spoke to a young inspirational man who will take the digital industry to new heights and believes this industry won’t shape the future, simply put in his own words ;‘it is the future’. At only 23 years of age, Micah Adams is the head of a new digital department at Media Zoo based in Imperial wharf, London, he explains how he got there, which skills are vital and the common social barriers BME’s face when approaching corporate industries. “As the head of digital at Media Zoo I work with regional and international businesses and develop digital media strategies for them. My team report analytics, performances and lead generation metrics for each campaign. So far we’ve worked with INEOS, Adidas, EDF, Channel 4, and more. “I’ve always been talented within business; therefore working within the new digital space has always been easy for me. Digital became the vice I used to showcase my skills. I believe those skills could have been transferable in journalism or marketing, it’s just that the dice have fallen in my life this way and doors have been opened in the digital arena.” Concerns are continuously

by Melissa Erasia raised about the struggles young BME’s face when approaching large businesses for work and trying to make a name for themselves in corporate environments. Adams believes the digital industry is an exception for such barriers. “Digital seems to be such a new area, a lot of the racial hardships and glass ceilings found in more traditional modes of business do not exist as of yet in this buzzing industry.” Without being too misleading and presenting the idea that a successful position in the digital industry is a walk in the park, Adams explains one key lesson learned on his journey. When presented with the idea that a percentage of young BME’s struggle to land commanding professions because of a social rather than racial barrier, he readily shared his view: “Whilst I’m not silly enough to believe there aren’t racial barriers hindering all people of colour, much like we have with sexism and ageism, there are certain things you have to be willing to do if you really want to achieve. This does not mean neglecting culture but progression is the changing of someone’s ability towards excellence. Let us not be ignorant to the idea of language and presentation barriers. You wouldn’t speak to your friends the same way you would speak to your parents. It’s vital we learn how to tailor the way we speak to different

people. In a business meeting today with INEOS, who are an oil refinery in Scotland and a billion dollar company, if I didn’t present myself in a way that would be appealing to them, I would not have won the pitch. Be mindful of your speech, words are powerful.” When asked which qualities he believes are essential for his particular role he explained. The most important thing in my arena is forward thinking; there must be a drive to want to learn about the arena you wish to work in as much as any hobby or past time you may have. Lastly, he shared his two pence on the way this industry is heading: “Everything is moving towards becoming digitalised. This presents itself with some interesting opportunities for young BME’s considering digital is now an international arena. You can have a business call with someone in Lisbon from your office in London. As a young black man my greatest challenge was dealing with depression which is sometimes misunderstood and mishandled in the black community, with the help of selfless parents and God who took me out of those dark times I was able to push through such hindrances.” The world is ever-changing, presenting itself with new opportunities for anyone. As Micah concluded “you don’t have to be the best, just be a better you than the you that went to sleep last night.”

he re-launch of The REP sees “The Legend of Mike Smith,” as its first production, bringing home one of the city’ greatest ever icons to kick-off what will be on-going massive things for one of the UK’s best theatres. Award-winning jazz icon, Soweto Kinch, opens Birmingham’s Repertory Theatre with his musical production which

runs to the end of the month as the theatre embraces the wide, diversity which represents the city. Soweto explains his positive state of mind for his new show and how much it is important to consider new Birmingham talents by the same way.

“My last album is called ‘The Legend of Mike Smith.’ It is something huge, like the ‘Lord of the Rings’... in a Hip Hop way, with rage. It’s one of emancipation. We’re played all around the world and now, of course, in Birmingham. It’s not a piece of theatre; a musical, or a music concert. It’s another form, an original one. We can’t put it in boxes, or can’t categorize it.” Street Cred loves this of Art, because it comes different forms and it’s ticultural. Creativity is palpable.

Hold out for a better offer, even if loved ones pressure you to take this one. By the time mid-month arrives, you'll be able to find a position related to writing, research, or teaching. The competition will be fierce, but you will prevail if you emphasise your work ethic in the interview. You will do battle with a bureaucratic organisation in the days surrounding the 18th. Support that was promised to you will suddenly be withdrawn, forcing you to find other ways to attain your objectives. Suddenly, it will feel like you're walking a tightrope without a net. Fortunately, you have friends in high places. Lean on a business or romantic partner when the going gets rough. Fill out applications for grants and scholarships as October comes to a close. Your efforts will not be wasted.

A

good job is yours for the asking at the beginning of October. This May 22nd - will be a wonderful Jun 21st opportunity to utilise your research skills. You have a knack for digging up information that eludes everyone else. Don't cancel plans with a friend near the 5th, even if a hot date is in the works. You can't afford to turn your back on the people who have loved and supported you all this time. A troubled friendship will fall by the wayside around the 18th. You can no longer tolerate an old friend's erratic behaviour. Once this troublemaker leaves

your life, you'll have so much more time for the activities you love. It will make you realise just how draining this relationship was, and how right you were to end it. Thinking of moving to a bigger place? The final days of October are ideal for finding a spacious, beautiful abode.

E

arly October finds you doing battle with an indecisive relative. You think you Jun 22nd know what is best Jul 23rd for this family member, but that's not necessarily true. Try to be more flexible. A choice has to be made, but it won't happen if you tighten the screws. You will have more success if you listen closely and make a few critical compromises. Be aggressive in financial talks at mid-month. You won't get paid what you are worth unless push your agenda. Pushy behaviour is pretty alien to you, but it does serve a purpose. Resist the urge to accept a job that involves lots of pressure. Although you'd probably be successful in this position, you really don't want to sacrifice your personal happiness for the sake of an impressive title. Besides, you know what it's like to work for a demanding boss. Do you really want to subject yourself to another such nightmare?

A

lack of experience creates problems for you in early October. If Jul 24th - you feel like you're Aug 23rd out of your depth with a particular duty or assignment, admit it. Ask the powers that be for help. The quicker you draw attention to the problem, the less your reputation will suffer. On the plus side, this is a wonderful learning opportunity. Beware of sending an angry email or text message around the 5th. Diplomacy is key during this sensitive period. Being able to withstand the insults of an oppressive authority figure will pay off. Someone who admires your grace under fire will offer you the chance to show off your creative talent. The second half of October will be spent on the activities you love: Acting, singing, or playing music. You've always had a knack for the performing arts, and will enjoy developing your gifts in such a supportive environment.

O

A moneymaking opportunity related to childcare, property, or catering will come your way this month. This is your chance to pay off some bills and put anything left over into a savings account. With this month’s theme marking the legacy created by Dr. Martin Luther King after his famous 1963 march and speech in Washington DC, the launch event highlighted the position in which Black people find themselves today and what’s needed, collectively, to move forward and create a legacy for the next generation Noted speakers on the night celebrated what has so far been achieved and what each individual’s responsibility is in making Black children and young people’s future brighter and fulfilling than today. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of The Drum, so, in kicking off proceedings, CEO, Charles Small lorded in its achievements and longevity, as well as position as Britain’s longest serving in its field.

“The ‘I Have A Dream’ speech on the steps on the Lincoln Memorial was a seminal moment that captured the hearts and minds of millions throughout the world becoming the rallying call in the fight for jobs and freedom for the under-represented,” he said. Birmingham City Council’s Councillor John Cotton pointed out the number of events and activities taking place across the city, during October, under the auspice of the Council. Speaking of the recent visit to Birmingham by Reverend Jesse Jackson, the Cabinet Member for Social Cohesion and Equality marked the advancements made by the Black community, focussing on the former King aide remarking on the diversity of the city and said; “It’s important that we embrace the diversity as it’s a key strength of us moving forward.” On Jackson’s challenge for there to be more Black people in prominent positions in the Council, Cotton said; “It’s our duty to create a more diverse Council and that we are striving to do.” “London had ‘cancelled’ Black History Month,” said keynote speaker, Lee Jasper. more about critical regional issues that will affect them here in the UK. Jamaican born and raised Burton founded the company last year to fill the void for investigative reporting on Caribbean issues. “I want to make credible news from the region,” said Zahra. “I am determined to deliver news that digs deeper and remembers to follow up. There are millions of people in the Caribbean and its Diaspora who want to know the facts about what’s going on where they live.” Named for the geographic coordinates of Jamaica, 18° North, founded last year, is the first production of Global Reporters for the Caribbean to fill the void for investigative reporting on issues in the Caribbean that is never told, for whatever reason. Zahra, who has a Masters in Marketing and International Hospitality from the

University of Southern California, always wanted to dig deep into the psyche of the Caribbean; “The Caribbean is always noted for its music and sporting prowess,” she says, “but I want to connect the Diaspora far more further.” Although her background is in finance, Ms Burton always knew that investigative journalism wpuld be her calling. Her ‘journey’ started on Jamaican channel, TVJ, where, though here time there was exciting, it wasn’t as fulfilling as she wished it to be. She returned to the US where, starting at the bottom, she was a teleprompter at Bloomberg before being a producer, responsible for outside broadcast work

and booking some of the world’s biggest names as guests. “Never be afraid to work in different businesses to find out what you ‘don’t’ want to do,” says the effervescent Zahra. Now thirty-something, she’s very much in her element doing very controversial, cutting-edge shows that; “delivers news that digs deeper and remembers to follow up,” as she said. 18° North features stories that reveal Burton’s dedication to in-depth coverage of Caribbean affairs, with far more than 20 stations in the Caribbean, U.S. and

U.K. having signed on to distribute it, including top broadcast networks like Jamaica’s afore mentioned TVJ and Trinidad’s TV6. Negotiations are underway with even more broadcasters as far away as Africa. She is also now looking for story ideas to be submitted from the Diaspora, here in the UK, for possible broadcasting. Month celebrations, he said: “Dr. King faced a barrage of obstacles in reaching his goal. We’ve allowed pain to be the ‘norm.’ Our problem is us. The solution doesn’t start with Obama, and you can’t start a revolution on buying weave or weed. With deep love, inner strength and togetherness, we can move mountains.” A group of local young people took part in a special spoken word workshop by recreating that seminal moment in history as they delivered their own interpretation of the "I Have A Dream" speech. "We Live The Dream," a hugely talented, creative and uplifting collective of rappers, singers and musicians featuring new and original compositions from leading contemporary artists including MC Rukus, lyrical Maverick Paigey Cakey, Soul Queen SheZar, Macca with full live band and much more giving a rapturous performance leaving everybody, young and old, man, woman and child, in awe of the legacy left by Martin Luther King to this day. "Less we forget?" Not on the basis of the nights performers. Just as long as local talent is nurtured by centres in the position to do so, then MLK's legacy, entwined with that being created today, will live on. This will attract representatives of Franchophonie States. So far, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Seychelles and Haiti have expressed interest in participating. The Creole Symposium is a vision of Roseau Mayor, Cecil Joseph. His idea came up on a trip to Martinique three years ago with the Mayor of Bouillante, Guadeloupe. “I told him why can’t we have something that is called a symposium for Creole? He asked me to give him an idea of the concept of what it is. I told him we could have both a symposium and exhibition on the language,

the event is hoped to be yearly. It will focus on a different aspect of the Creole heritage every year. “We need to bring Creole back under the spotlight and examine where we want it to go. Is it going in the direction that we want it to go? Is there more that we can do about Creole? Creole and tourism- can we package? Somebody living in Europe or North America can come to Dominica or Martinique on a seven-day holiday and spend two days in every island. There’s room for cooperation; there’s scope for collaboration through Creole and that is what we want the Creole symposium to be about,” Douglas said. The symposium will take place at Arawak House of Culture in Roseau, while the exhibition will compliment Creole in the Park at the Botanic Gardens. l

AJN ultimate winners in Trophy tournament

I

n its’ fifth year, under the careful jurisdiction of some of Birmingham’s most prominent and celebrated businesspeople-and associates-this was not only another way of celebrating yet another great of independence for Jamaica, it again proved the ‘glue’ that the AJN uses as they continue their part in ‘cementing’ the rich and diverse communities that they see make the West Midlands truly multicultural. With backing from well-established and respected independent travel agent, Diamond Travel, noted solicitors firm, Bailey Wright & Co, leading made-tomeasure clothing company, We Make & Mend, Sunrise Bakery, Deep Caribbean Restaurant and Cleone Foods, the annual Association of Jamaican Nationals Twenty20 Cricket Trophy in Birmingham’s Handsworth Park was again the ‘stands-out’ as one of the biggest public sporting events to take place to date. Bringing the August Bank

Holiday to ‘a close,’ the AJN Twenty20 Cricket Trophy was a triumph for Handsworth C.C., the dedicated businesses and organisations who constantly and willingly lend their ongoing support to the association and Smethwick Cricket Club, eventual winners of the hard-foughtfor trophy, after a day of fierce, sporting competition, and family fun too. That came by way of some swashbuckling twenty-over cricket, as the hosts made a fist of a thrilling final before falling short of outright winners Smethwick’s mighty 230 for 4. 120 all out was never going to be enough as former Handsworth batsman, and eventual ‘Man of the Match,’ Renrick Cooper, proved the star of the show, almost single-handedly batting the visitors beyond reach hitting a whirlwind 105-the first century made in a twenty20 match at Handsworth Park. Despite defeat, Handsworth C.C. were ‘winners’ in many people’s eyes; with the capa-

bilities of running this wellrespected and well-supported tournament in self-funded, first class surroundings, open for everybody. Beverley Lindsey OBE OD, owner of Diamond Travel and Chair of the Associate of Jamaican Nationals (UK), celebrated solicitor, Karen Wright, of Bailey Wright & Co and We Make & Mend owner, Audley Hinds, lending their considerable support by being present to make the day’s presentations. “We (AJN) thank all who support the event and what we are doing for communities at large,” said a proud Ms. Lindsey. ominica is preparing to host internationally acclaimed artistes including soca superstar Machel Montano and Haitian Compas band, Carimi for its 17th World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) in October. The WCMF which carries the tagline ‘Three nights of pulsating rhythm’ will take place from October 25 to 27, 2013 at the Windsor Park Stadium. “This festival started in 1997 and its sole purpose was to put Creole (music) on the map…. We want the music to continue to be of that caliber that we can attract more patrons to create a bigger patron base. I think people think I’m joking when I say that I would like to one day see 5000 people per night consistently coming to the World Creole Music Festival, but this festival needs that support. We need to have 20,000 people land on the island to support the whole month of October,” Events director of Dominica Festivals

by Edona Jno Baptiste Committee (DFC), Nathalie Clarke said at a news conference this month. Friday’s lineup features Machel Montano, Nu Look, Kwasi Color and Triple K Global Jamaican dancehall/reggae artistes Busy Signal and African Band Bracket will headline Saturday night. Zouk All Stars including Alex Alexis and Patrice Hulman, and local Cadence All Stars like Fitzroy Williams and Elisha Benoit are also down to perform on that night. Carimi, Kassav, Tito Puente Jr., Swinging Stars with calypsonians and Uprising Stars will close the curtains on the final night of the show. Eight local performers will also get the opportunity to share the spotlight on the WCMF stage and DFC-organised fringe activities. “There’s so much talent on this island so they’re eight rising bands that were identified.

They’re groupings of young artistes from 365MMP, Q95 (Talent Search), from people that are just around in the villages don’t really get a chance to shine anywhere. We decided let’s give them a chance to support the intermissions and the nightly opening, the little after parties…. And give us space for agents who come down with the headline artistes and persons who come looking in the island for talent,” Clarke explained. DFC has decided to pay homage to pioneer of Cadence lypso and founding member of Exile One Band, Fitzroy Williams and has made him this year’s WCMF icon. A season ticket for the event costs EC$325 while a nightly ticket is EC$120. The peak of Dominica’s independence celebrations are held in October and culminate on Independence Day- the third of November. This year, the Nature Island is celebrating its 35th anniversary as an Independent nation.

Lambeth schools get funds to beat the bulge

S

even schools in Lambeth will be able to expand and create much needed school places, thanks to successful funding applications submitted by Lambeth Council. A steady increase in the number of school age children has put huge pressure on local schools and several have had to create extra ‘bulge’ classes and use portable classrooms for lessons. The government’s Targeted Basic Need Programme supports the provision of new, high quality school places for local authorities experiencing the greatest pressure on places. The exact amount and time scale of the new money from the Department for Education has yet to be clarified. However, Lambeth council is confident that, along with financial support from the DfE announced in March, it will provide sufficient funding for both 2013/14 and 2014/15, which had been facing a considerable shortfall. Cllr. Rachel Heywood, Cabinet Member for Education said:

l Cllr. Rachel Heywood “This is absolutely brilliant news, and is largely thanks to the great deal of work that went into the funding applications. It means that we have been able to maximise the levels of financial support coming into Lambeth over the next couple of years to create much needed places in schools which will be a great relief for teachers, pupils and parents .”

ADOPTION AND FOSTERING

W

Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons

There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more ! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!

We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

7. Meeting the child

9. Making the adoption legal

10. Your life together

An adoption is made legal only after the making of an adoption order in a court. This finally means that you are the legal parent of the child, and nothing can revoke that. The child will be “yours”, as if born to you. That day will mark a momentous occasion in your lives.

Like any other family, you will enjoy watching your child grow and develop. Also like any other family, there are bound to be ups and downs! Adoption support is available to see you through.

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience.

why a child is placed in care.

The 10 steps of adoption Adoption & Fostering Our ongoing campaign to help the children in need in our communities With support from

1. Make an application You can contact your local authority or voluntary adoption agency in your area. To locate one near you, you can use BAAF’s Find an agency directory. They will welcome your interest and send you an information pack about adoption, the way they work, and the children needing new families.

2. Preparing to adopt Your agency will have probably invited you to an open day, and then to join a preparation group. This is like a training course, along with other prospective adopters, that will give you an insight into what adoption means today. It will tell you what children need from an adoptive family, and will help you explore what you are able to offer.

3. You are assessed Every prospective adopter has to go through a formal assessment process. A social worker carries this out, and sometimes it is also called a home study. The assessing social worker will visit you at your home to discuss and explore why you want to adopt, the kind of child you would best be able to care for, and your overall suitability. References will be sought and checks will be made.

4. Going to panel The report written by your social worker about you is given to an adoption panel for them to recommend whether or not you should be approved as a prospective adopter. The panel will make the recommendation, but it will be the agency that will approve you. Don't worry too much about this! The vast majority of adopters considered by the panel are approved.

5. Being linked with a child Once you are approved, the agency will do its best to link you with a child. This could be with a child in the care of the local authority, or, if that doesn’t happen, a child featured in a familyfinding publication like BAAF’s Be My Parent, or Adoption UK’s Children Who Wait, or a referral to the Adoption Register.

6. A match is made Once a link is made between you and a particular child or children, you will be given background information about the child. This would include information about the child’s family background, a history of their early years, why the child came into care, the child’s characteristics, and any particular needs the child may have. Once the match with a particular child or children has been made, you will attend the “matching panel”. This will determine whether or not to recommend the match. Once again, the final approval will be given by the agency.

Once the match has been approved, introductions to the child can finally begin! These will be well planned by the social worker, and with yourself and the foster carer who may be looking after the child. There will probably initially be visits to the child at the foster carer’s house, outings, and visits by the child to your house, including overnight stays. Gradually, you and the child will be getting to know each other, and soon the child will move in.

8. Moving in An exciting time, and a daunting time for all concerned! Moving can be stressful at the best of times, so it doesn’t take much to imagine the mix of emotions that this could evoke. Most importantly, it marks the beginning of your life together as a family.

He said, “Karachi is the economic hub which gives 70% of the total revenue of the Pakistan. Karachi had been a centre of

labour and democratic movements in the past. People of Karachi had contributed a lot to the movements for democracy but unfortunately, for the past two decades, they have been suffering from the fire blazed by lawlessness, target killing, activities of extortionists and racism. This had also affected the economical activities of the city.” During the visit, Imran Khan was accompanied by several party members including PTI Central

Imran Khan said, “People of Karachi participated in 11th May General Elections, to show yet again that they are in favor of democracy. They flayed the criminal forces and stood by Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaf for which we are grateful. I am confident that people of Karachi, especially the residents

Car buyers urged to double check log books

H

PI, the UK’s leading vehicle history check expert, is warning used car buyers to be on their guard against stolen log books after receiving a spate of consumer calls expressing concern over recent purchases. Criminals are using these documents to accompany stolen vehicles that have had their identity changed to match that of a legitimate vehicle. The practice, otherwise known as cloning, is costing car buyers tens of thousands of pounds, says HPI. Although the theft of 130,000 blank registration forms from the DVLA happened back in 2006, they remain very much in circulation and are catching out unsuspecting car buyers. HPI is in the unique position of including a stolen V5 document check as standard within its HPI Check, confirming the V5 registration document is not one of the batch the DVLA confirmed as stolen. HPI is also the only provenance check provider to provide clone cover up to the value of £40,000

with their vehicle check. Daniel Burgess, HPI Managing Director said: “Despite ongoing warnings of the threat of car cloning, buyers remain at risk. Criminals continue to make millions by cloning cars using the blank registration forms stolen from the DVLA and selling these vehicles on to members of the public, who then lose both their new motor and their money when their vehicles are confiscated by the police.” The stolen certificates have a different background colour on the Notification of Permanent Export (V5C/4) tear off slip on the

second page, which looks mauve on the front and pink on the reverse. On legitimate documents they should be mauve on both sides.

Has the Olympic Flame B burnt out? A

Research explores BME coaching aspirations

year on after the nation collectively celebrated The Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the overwhelming London 2012 Olympic Games success, a new national poll paints a depressing picture of the nation’s community spirit, with over half of Britons feeling that community camaraderie has plummeted in their area. Furthermore, it appears that almost two thirds of Londoners believe that last year’s spirit has dissipated. The poll, commissioned by Kumho Tyres to support its Cash for Causes campaign, also discovered that over a quarter of Brits have stopped making the effort to volunteer, to get to know their neighbours or even donate to charity. The new research also revealed a significant lack of awareness when it comes to community projects, with two thirds of respondents unaware of any local

initiatives. The results are not all doom and gloom though, with a quarter of Britons actually still getting involved and participating in community groups as a direct result of the Olympics. Kumho has teamed up with over 200 members of its nationwide ECSTA Performance Centre network of independent tyre retailers with the aim of revitalising the nation’s dwindling community spirit by encouraging local people to get behind their favourite local causes and charities in its Cash for Causes campaign. The scheme will see up to 400

community projects, charities and organisations chosen by the EPCs from across England, Scotland and Wales benefit from a

share of a £100,000 pot. People can show their support for the causes and charities by voting either at their local participating EPC or online. Kumho Tyres’ UK Marketing

Director, John Thrupp said: “It is important to harness the community spirit that 2012 generated in Britain and make sure that it

B athlete, Louise Hazel has announced her retirement from heptathlon, the event where she has had great success. It comes just 12 months prior to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she would have been defending the title she won in Delhi in 2010. Hazel went on to compete at the Olympics in London last year where she finished 27th. Whilst the Birchfield Harrier is hanging up her heptathlon spikes, she isn’t stepping away from the sport completely, admitting that she may not leave track and field behind altogether. “I’m retiring from the heptathlon but I’m not ruling out other sports; I just feel I can’t carry on in that discipline,” she said.

Heart disease is one of the biggest killers in the UK and I think it’s so unnecessary in this day and age with all the advances in technology and all the information we have about nutrition and diet and exercise that people are still getting it wrong. It also echoes the values behind The Podium Effect as well,” she says. Louise retires as the seventh best GB & NI heptathlete of all time with a personal best score of 6166 set in 2011.

ritish Athletics will be working with Leeds Metropolitan University on research into sporting experience and coaching aspirations among under-represented groups, with particular reference to Black and Minority Ethnic groups. The study, commissioned by Sports Coach UK, aims to find out more about the motivations, aspirations and experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic groups and their entry into sport coaching. Athletics is one of the world’s most diverse sports and British Athletics is keen to hear whatever experiences they have faced, so they can fully enhance the diversity of their athlete and coaching profile. In striving to provide equality and fairness for all and not to discriminate on grounds of age, disability, ethnicity, gender reassignment, marital sta-

tus or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, religion or belief, sex or gender and sexual orientation the project supports British Athletics’ commitment to the creation and enhancement of an inclusive climate which enables elite success, individual achievement, and a vibrant, attractive and sustainable sport that can captivate both existing and new audiences.

Doyle reaches record ‘Record’

M

Ball players help young people raise their game

uscleman and former paratrooper Paddy Doyle once again beat the Guinness World Record, this time with his 10km cross country speed march carrying 100lb back pack. Doyle and his team of pacers and officials walked part of the Arden Challenge Walk route starting and finishing in Henley-in-Arden. The arduous walk consisted of hills, streams and stiles. It‘s his 304th fitness endurance record. Paddy said: "We decided to start off at 7am in the morning as it was far cooler at that time in the morning, I felt mentally strong and was determined to get a good time, and my team pushed me all the way to the finish line. The Arden Challenge route is ideal for such an event as it is 100% cross country terrain". The finishing time was 2hrs. 4mins. 36secs. averaging just over 20 minutes per mile.

l Cllr Jack Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Neighbourhoods, joined Lambeth police, London Lions basketball players and residents at the Rhodesia Road Ball Pitch. ondon Lions basketball players visited a Lambeth court to offer young people a free opportunity to improve their skills. The ‘Hoop it… don’t shoot it’ sport and social event was organised following a non-fatal shooting in April at the Rhodesia Road Ball Pitch in Stockwell. The council, police, Grantham

Road Residents Association and Hyde Housing Association were all involved, and regular basketball coaching sessions at the court followed. Cllr Jack Hopkins, Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Neighbourhoods, said: “The basketball session was great fun, and a good opportunity to pick up some tips from the London Lions’ players.

Our community safety team helped put the event together because we want young people in the borough to have as many chances as possible to enjoy sport, get to know their neighbours better and build community spirit.” On the day the park around the basketball court also hosted a barbeque, face painting and there was information for local resi-

dents from the police and Hyde housing. A/Chief Inspector Jon Hubbard from Neighbourhoods Policing Team said; “This event is the culmination a great deal of partnership work by the community, council, the London Lions and Lambeth police. The effort gives local people a sense of regaining control over their facilities – to be used by

young people living in the community, in the right way.” The work is being undertaken as part of Lambeth Council’s Safer Communities campaign to highlight work being done to make the borough a safer place. The campaign also shows how we are giving people in the borough more control over the council’s work with the police.
