One in three people will get cancer and it’s the toughest thing many people will ever face. One charity that goes above and beyond, for cancer sufferer, plus

family and friends is the Reflecting Hope Fundraising Committee, who supports cancer sufferers in the community. Linked with the Macmillan Cancer Support, they do fundraising and go about encouraging people to fundraise for them. In operation for two years now, the Birmingham-based organisation is run by seven committe members, all with direct, or indirect, links with suffering cancer

wo children from Woodmansterne Primary School, in Lambeth, have seen road signs that they designed being attached to lamp posts outside their school. Year four pupil Laura Kryger (left) and year one pupil Elisha Thomas Ingram showed off their designs before the signs were put up outside their school on Stockport Road, in Streatham. They won a competition run by the school to design road signs to remind drivers to slow down after the school and a number of residents in the Streatham Vale area

The effort is part of Lambeth Council’s Cleaner and Greener Streets campaign which highlights everything we’re doing to make the borough a beautiful place sustainable place for everyone to enjoy. Councillor Imogen Walker, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, said: “We were delighted to support the children in this initiative. We have produced several signs from the girls’ two prizewinning designs and they will be displayed around the Streatham Vale and Streatham Common areas to remind drivers to drive carefully and slow

Buddhist Vihara embraces Sikh guests B hai Sahib Mohinder Singh, Chair of Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jathaand the Nishkam Centre, was one of many distinguished guests invited to a prestigious event at the Birmingham Buddhist Peace Pagoda. The event was to mark the launch of a Buddhist Academy, the 15th Anniversary of the Peace Pagoda and a Waso Robe Offering. Bhai Sahib was accompanied by Sewa Singh Mandla and Amrick Singh, Trustee of the Nishkam Centre and Centre

Director respectively. The visit strengthened the on-going forging of relationships and demonstrated solidarity amongst the faith communities of Birmingham. The Peace Pagoda which opened in 1998 stands proud in a residential neighbourhood where its grounds are peaceful and tranquil. Sayadaw Dr. Rewata Dhamma was Founder and Spiritual Director of the Birmingham Buddhist Vihara and Dhammatalaka Peace Pagoda. He passed away peacefully in 2004 and it is firmly believed that without

him the Birmingham Buddhist Vihara and Dhammatalaka Peace Pagoda could not have been established. Bhai Sahib said: “There is some fantastic work going on here. The academy is much needed and any attempt to improve educational attainment is most welcome. We must work together as people of faith to ensure the wellbeing and success of all.” Ven. Dr W Kassapa spoke about the great work the Pagoda was doing before thanking John Beard, Chair of Birmingham Buddhist Vihara for all his hard

work to sustain the centre. Mr. Beard commented: ”Both the Ven Dr Uttara Nyana and I were deeply honoured that Bhai Sahib Mohinder Singh, Sewa Singh Mandla and Amrick Singh, took time out of their very busy schedules to attend our event. It was a great personal pleasure for me to have Bhai Sahib Ji, recognise our work at the Peace Pagoda as I consider him one of the major forces in the protection of faiths and community cohesion that I have ever met.”

Hope springs eternal for Macmillan Support

F

ormer Wolverhampton Wanderers star, Mel Eves, was a special guest speaker as thousands of pounds was raised at the Macmillan Cancer Support Charity Ball held in the West Midlands. The event held at The Cap Centre, in Smethwick, by the Reflecting Hope Fundraising Committee witnessed, first-hand, the overwhelming work carried out, nationwide, by the highly valued charity organisation as recognition of the work they do, often above and beyond that ’extra mile,’ was highlighted by people who suffer, have suffered, or is close to someone who has experienced the deadly disease. Compered by the Reverend Nathan Turner and Committee member, Paulette Williams, the Ball was a fun, yet thought provoking evening, bringing to focus the seriousness of something which affects all of us in one way

or another, in various manors, without ‘preaching’ or ‘dictating’ to a hall full of people, many of whom who had their own story to tell about cancer. From Guest Speaker, Brenda Williams, from the USA, who spoke over overcoming her lifethreatening ordeal, to Eves, who spoke of the devastation that cancer causes, having attended three funerals that previous week, all through the ‘Big C,’ commenting: “Having attended three funerals in a week, all because of cancer, I really appreciate the work carried out by Macmillan Cancer Support and the Reflecting Hope Fundraising Committee, because the disease has no friend or favour. The big thing here is ‘prevention.’ We have to lobby politicians to manage the contents of the food we buy, which is a major issue.” Macmillan representative, Raju Sandher, thanked the guests, saying: “With the support of organi-

sations like the Reflecting Hope Fundraising Committee, we are increasing the support service that we provide and, more specifically, we are looking to get things like free hospital parking for cancer sufferers and family members who visit their loved ones.” This was the first major event held by Reflecting Hope Fundraising Committee with further events to come in the near future.

New city park wins national award

B

irmingham City Council’s flagship £11.7m Eastside City Park was hailed a success after winning a raft of local and national industry awards. The 6.2-acre park, the city’s first urban park in 130 years, scooped up four awards at the Royal Institute of British Architects Midlands and East Awards at a ceremony at Millennium Point. The development was also one of five projects to win a coveted RIBA National Award and is also shortlisted to compete against London’s Olympic Park for a prestigious RIBA Stirling Award. The park stretches from the city centre out into Eastside and is flanked by Millennium Point, achieving the Council’s vision to provide 14,300 sqm of landscaped green space for the community to enjoy. Councilor Tahir Ali, Cabinet Member for Development, Jobs and Skills, said: “Eastside City Park is at the heart of the regeneration of the area and I am very pleased to see the success of the city’s vision, as set out in the Big City Plan and Eastside Masterplan. It is a wonderful facility for Birmingham people, providing much more green space in the city centre. I look forward to the continued growth of Eastside as an integral part of the city centre for people to live and work in.” The scheme was created in partnership with the council’s construction services company, Acivico.

Library of Birmingham transform city service

T

he new £188.8 million Library of Birmingham, a major cultural destination for the city, is now open in Centenary Square to transform the city’s library service. It is expected to attract over three million visitors a year, with even more online. Comprising of ten levels, with nine above ground, an intricate metal façade echoes the gasome-

ters, tunnels, canals and viaducts which fuelled Birmingham’s industrial growth, wrapping the building from the first to the eighth floor. Designed by Dutch architects, Mecanoo, with leading awardwinning support services and construction company, Carillion, and Capita Symonds as project managers, it features a spacious entrance and foyer with mezzanine, the gateway to both the

library and The REP, a new flexible studio theatre seating 300 people, a lower ground level with a performance area and children’s spaces including Story Steps, four further public levels and two outdoor garden terraces. A 'golden box' of secure archive storage occupies two levels of the building, within which the city’s internationally significant collection of archives, photography and rare books will be stored. These include one of the world’s largest Shakespeare collections, the Parker Collection of Children’s Books and Games, the Early and Fine Printing Collection and the Boulton& Watt archive. A new gallery enables select parts of the collection to go on display while a digital gallery showcases the collections on large screens. At the summit there’s a rooftop rotunda houses the Shakespeare Memorial Room and a panoramic viewing gallery where visitors can enjoy stunning views from one of the highest points in the city. A proud Sir Albert Bore, Leader of Birmingham City Council, says: “The Library of Birmingham is a beacon of what the library sector can offer society, providing specialist services for all in business, personal health and learning, and events, live performances and exhibitions for all ages and tastes. But books remain the heart of what libraries are about.”

IBL encompasses the longstanding science park team and remains wholly owned by Birmingham City Council, which also has full ownership of the rest of the 14 acre park. Plans are also being developed for 2,000 sq ft of contemporary pod offices to be constructed on the podium car park. Subject to planning permission, the pod accommodation will be available for occupation this summer. The Digital Plaza will be one of the first Enterprise Zone developments to get underway and will enable its future occupiers to benefit from Business Rates relief. The first new Digital Plaza building will be the circa £8m iCentrumTM building, which

will include a ground-breaking software development playground and a 10,000 sq ft tech incubation facility. In advance of construction work getting underway on the Digital Plaza development, a 2Gbit/s diverse internet transit is being installed across the entirety of the 14 acre Birmingham Science Park Aston estate. Birmingham City Council Leader, Sir Albert Bore, said: “The community of technology entrepreneurs that has been nurtured at BSPA over the past 30 years is a credit to Greater Birmingham. Other large science parks across the country have created campuses to profile specific activity and now we are following suit.” Dr David Hardman MBE, CEO of Innovation Birmingham said: “Creating the Innovation Birmingham Campus represents a statement of intent. We will actively promote innovation to catalyse knowledge economy ventures, in support of Birmingham’s Smart City aspirations.” A 2Gbit/s capacity will allow Science Park tenants to have a dedicated, resilient broadband connection of up to 100Mbit/s.

Festival Madness

Ammo’s

A

ll I’m hearing this summer is festival festival festival! Dance festivals, festivals for Squares, & more City Centre festivals. Well isn’t it interesting that some of the best festivals just go unnoticed? It seems that the crowds at Birmingham’s big Mela at Victoria Park which attracted over 40,000 - including pundits speechifying from the multiple stages, stalls booting out the cities vegetarian feasts and old age pensioners just chilling in the sun with major artists pumping out Bhangra rhymes didn’t count for much, unless of course you was there – it was massive and a true representation of this diverse city we live in. I’m really a little disappointed; as a promoter I don’t like to see festival organisers put their time and money on the line, deliver a winning product and find their success not really given the support from the public agencies, TV channels and papers (you know who you are). And what speaks to me is whenever there’s any opportunity for communities to get together and host a safe, stylish event for thousands of people from across the city and beyond. It’s good business! Any fes-

tival on the UK’s “A list” will set tills ringing and spread great publicity across the world. In Birmingham we also have an endless list of independent festivals that really push the barriers of great work, profiling the spirit of the city and more importantly bringing new people to Brum town and filling out hotel rooms. At Punch we have our BASS Festival – (google it) - Bringing to Birmingham the best of black arts and associated cultural tourism. As with the Mela, our cleverest politicians including our leader have already learned that here they need to be in the vanguard; on the stage and on the TV for launch and execution. They know that Festivals are successful cultural interventions, not political demonstrations. Festivals don’t need to be policed like G20 or covered up in the press. The best festivals are always meaningful; they start with great thoughts, faith, a culture or a space that’s shared by some and inviting to others. London, of course, has learned this first. With fifteen regular cultural festivals happening at Trafalgar Square alone, it offers something for everyone. But London knows it’s lead cannot be taken for granted - that’s why they have the LCSG. The London Cultural Strategy Group brings together professionals from key agencies; a top table of twenty movers and shakers, all thinkers and doers, and all outsiders, which is the key USP - apart from one Elected Member. The LCSG advises

the Mayor on promoting London as a world-class city of culture, and shapes the development and provision cultural activity and sport across the capital. It looks at developing public spaces across the city to support new festivals and temporary arts installations. The big question is where is the brummy version of this? Let’s learn from London. Birmingham – especially the City Council - must give more space and resources to those new ideas and independent companies which can bring our city’s diversity alive, instead of propping up tired concepts and initiatives that will be here today and gone tomorrow. Fortunately we still continue to attract and incubate new and exciting artforms and artists. The Council and other local stakeholders must start to deliver REAL cultural intervention and innovation to prevent them being ghettoised, marginalised, or leaving for greener pastures. Gabrielle Turnquest the youngest in England to be admitted to The Bar

A

t the age of 18 Gabrielle Turnquest has become the youngest person to be called to The Bar in Britain, in 600 years, having graduated two years ago. She started her first degree at the age of 14, gaining her degree on the same day that she graduated from high school. Called to The Bar before she

was even old enough to go to a bar, Florida-born Gabrielle passed her Graduate Diploma in Law at the University of Law when the average age for lawyer passes the Bar Professional Training Course is 27. Trainee lawyers did have to be at least 21 to be called to The Bar before a change in the law in 2009. She’s following in the footsteps of her mother a lawyer herself,

from Nassau in the Bahamas. She spent months researching curriculums from around the world, looking at which countries were doing best in which subjects and why before creating her own educational programme for Gabrielle and her siblings. She called it ‘Excelsior Academy,’ even going so far as to creating a uniform for the programme. Turnquest says there wasn't

any excess pressure, in fact, it was the contrary. She didn’t have any extra expectations from her mother, or anyone else for that matter: "Mother never gave us any massive expectations,” she said. “I am honoured to be the youngest person to pass The Bar exams and am fully of the impact of it,” she continued. Gabrielle insists that she never

missed out as a child growing up: “I don't think there was anything I could have done at 15 or 16 that I can't do now – just with a law degree," she says. She plans to be a Lawyer in the fashion industry back home and will be studying for the multistate bar exams too.

Cycling hospital staff saddle up for Sandwell charity

A

team of intrepid cyclists from Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust are setting off on a 143 mile bike ride – all to raise funds for a Sandwell charity. Starting at Sandwell Hospital a group of around 40 staff will be taking part in the Trust’s 2013 annual cycle ride this month pedalling the punishing Sustrans Route 81, taking in Wol-

verhampton, Albrighton and Telford, passing over the Welsh border and crossing the heart of beautiful mid-Wales through the Cambrian mountains and alongside the Elan Valley reservoirs, before finally hitting the coast at Aberystwyth. The ride is to raise funds for Sandwell Women’s Aid, a charity that offers refuge, support and counselling to victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence.

Fundraiser Gastroenterology Consultant, Dr Matthew Lewis, said: “Staff at the Trust have been doing the charity bike rides for 12 years now. It’s the chance to get some fresh air and exercise, while enjoying some beautiful scenery, as well as raising some money for a good local cause. It's also great for team-building, as we get to spend time with colleagues from other parts of the Trust. We hope to raise as much

money as possible for the charity. I'm sure the mountains in Wales will be a challenge, but we're all looking forward to it.” Fellow pedaller, Warren Chapman, a Nurse Consultant at City Hospital’s Endoscopy Unit, added: “All the money raised will go towards the charity's refuge accommodation services, providing essential safe and secure support to women and children fleeing domestic violence.”

Birmingham Repertory Theatre Re-Opens Its Doors Advertorial Feature

A

fter celebrating its centenary in Spring, Birmingham Repertory Theatre re-opens to the public this September with a new 300-seat studio theatre created through partnership with the new Library of Birmingham. The new theatre, along with The REP’s two existing theatres, will welcome an incredible season of entertainment. The first production in their new theatre, The STUDIO, will be the world premiere of The Legend of Mike Smith, written by and starring the Birmingham born MOBO award-winning musician Soweto Kinch. The show will take you on a journey through the seven deadly sins, with jazz improvisation, a driving hip hop score and choreography from a pioneer of British Hip Hop culture, Jonzi D. A world premiere is also the first production in The REP’s most intimate theatre, The DOOR, as one of the most exciting young poets and writers working in Britain today, Kate Tempest, presents her new

play. Hopelessly Devoted tells the story of music and its redemptive power, the show combines lyrical fireworks with exhilarating live music. The REP’s largest theatre space, The HOUSE, welcomes Mark Williams, star of Harry Potter, in a new staging of Molière’s hilarious satire, Tartuffe. In his first stage role at The REP, Martin Shaw returns to his home city to play the lead role in a new version of Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men. Maureen Lipman returns to The REP in Oliver Cotton’s new play Daytona, also starring Harry Shearer and John Bowe. Siobhan Redmond stars in David Greig’s exhilarating play Dunsinane, directed by The REP’s artistic director, Roxana Silbert. For Christmas, Bryony Lavery and Jason Carr’s adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol returns to The REP in a new staging. Plus, twenty years after its debut flight, The Snowman soars back to its Birmingham home. More

information can be found on The REP’s website birmingham-rep. co.uk. The REP’s artistic director Roxana Silbert says of the re-opening season: “This is an historic occasion and I’m thrilled that we are back home. We’re reopening the theatre with an exhilarating season of classics, new work, great hits, fantastic names, an extraordinary range of local talent and some brilliant collaborative and contemporary theatre making. Visitors will be able to enjoy our rejuvenated public spaces, including the stylish new Centenary Bar & Brasserie, run by our partners Searcys. Our season champions new work, nurtures local talent, collaborates with theatre companies both in the UK and overseas and, I hope, creates great theatre that is well and truly made in Birmingham. We’re heralding a new beginning and we can’t wait to welcome audiences through our doors”

Birmingham Jazz icon re-launches The REP

T

o re-launch the newly re-vamped REP, award-winning jazz and hip hop artist Soweto Kinch returns for a staged performance of his new album, ‘The Legend of Mike Smith.’ Inspired by his own experiences in music with influences from ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’ and ‘Dante’s Inferno,’ the production comes to Birmingham complete with choreography from long time hip hop theatre innovator and collaborator Jonzi D. The absorbingly adventurous production tells the story of an aspiring musician’s struggle,

who, as he’s about to get signed, he’s plagued by each of the seven deadly sins. Set in an altered reality charting his downward spiral into curiosity and temptation it is brought to life by creative visuals to illustrate his changing perceptions that affect his potential lifestyle choices and scored alongside Soweto’s improvisational jazz and lyrics. “It’s really exciting because all of my previous albums have had a 'theatrical element,' be it storytelling within it, a narrative within it, but this is the time from the very inception I thought about the full staging of it as a story,”

says the inspirational star. More than a production, he sees the new Repertory Theatre as an opportunity to celebrate Birmingham’s vast number of artists in Birmingham: “I’ve travelled the world and seen our artists make a name for them seemingly everywhere else but here. With The REP’s very ‘open’ programme, we can really put Birmingham’s performing arts heritage on the worldwide map. It’s important to keep the door for local talent.” ‘The Legend of Mike Smith’ runs from 12-28 September.

Living ‘The Dream’

We Live The Dream’ is a specially commissioned UK tour which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s ‘I Have A Dream’ speech which remains a powerful expression of one person’s passion for justice, freedom and equal rights under the law in the USA. Today, these ideals are back in the headlines with the current protests over the shooting of Trayvon Martin and the high profile quarrel between Jay-Z and Harry Belafonte over the importance of giving something back to society. ‘We Live The Dream’ brings together breakthrough artists including Rukus, Paigey Cakey, Shezar, Macca, Dwayne from the TTB band to create and perform powerful and exciting new material that revisits a legendary icon of Black History and Civil Rights and connects with today’s Hip Hop, Soul and Grime audi-

ences. The 6-city tour brings together five of the freshest acts on the UK Black music scene, for the first time, with new compositions and collaborations that reveal how the words of this often quoted speech have helped shaped the world we live in l today.

Paigey Cakey

Paigey Cakey got involved in the Martin Luther King project because: “It’s an amazing educational, motivational and inspire experience for others to understand the strong history of the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King is a huge historic figure and role model to a lot of people so it will be incredible performing and representing him and his legacy,” he says.

tour reveals as I know it’s not only just a performance; this is deffo gonna be a life changing experience.” About the tour, Rukus expects it to be special: “Expect to see something a little more than a regular music show. This tour is special in that it is a creative, conceptual, collaboration and will be something that takes you on a journey from start to finish.”

For Macca, Dr. King’s speech is special for many reasons: “I believe it is now inspiring for everybody of all races showing that dreams can turn into reality if you’re passionate, driven and motivated enough. “ Shezar says: “It has allowed me to continue to make songs that have a message for all to walk with, refer back to, use as there mantra and to uplift and build.

Dr. King made me want to continue to be a voice for the young and females who struggle to feel confident and sure of themselves. So I looking forward to what this

The Lone Ranger (12A)****

T

Starring Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp, William Fichtner, Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, Ruth Wilson. Directed by Gore Verbinski

oday’s Playstation generation probably won’t recall The Lone Ranger, a oncepopular radio and television character. They might have heard the rally cry ‘Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!’ or know the name ‘Tonto’, but that’s all a wild stab in the cultural dark. The film begins with a shot of an under-construction Golden Gate Bridge. Panning slowly to a fairground, an aged Tonto (Johnny Depp) stands dead still, like one of those statues outside dime stores and gas stations across the US. The expansion of America had a very heavy cost – mass genocide and the deliberate stifling of Native American culture. Verbinski and his writers have playfully put Tonto in charge of the yarn and this tact mushes together the John Ford maxim about printing the legend instead of the facts. The subversive aspects of The Lone Ranger place

it firmly alongside the likes of Arthur Penn’s revisionist Little Big Man. In both films, by total design, General Custer turns up as an idiotic figure. Tonto is the heart and weird soul of the movie and through his words and the camera’s eye we witness the often banal cruelty and rampant viciousness of the Old West. The Lone Ranger is a dark picture, a charge that Verbinski in interviews appears to deny. Whilst it is not exactly explicit, violence is not ignored or casually tossed aside. Armie Hammer’s ‘hero’ – as told by Tonto – is another offkilter portrayal. He arrives as a handsome, clean-shaven civilised man from Back East. He covets his brother’s wife and becomes a tireless avenger, transformed by his need for retribution. Again, Verbinski takes a traditional white-hatted hero and makes him less heroic than would seem on the surface of things. The central pairing is no

celebration of heroism, more a gonzo iteration of the buddy cop formula. Much has been made of the 149-minutes running time, but the movie zips along and closely echoes old serial formats with an episodic narrative that has plenty of cliffhangers. An incredible finale, set aboard a hurtling train, is nothing short of breath-taking and Hans Zimmer’s reworking of the William Tell Overture lends it a galloping pace. Verbinski packs his movie with plenty of oddities. Just like his last western – the animated feature Rango – the director’s quirky eye lends The Lone Ranger a humorous tone of possibly acquired taste. It’s a world where horses hide in trees, a brothel keeper packs a pistol in her tattooed ivory leg and the villain is a hare-lipped cannibal.

R

eports say that not only is McGregor a lock to return as a Force Ghost, in J.J. Abrams’ Supcoming Star Wars Episode VII but there’s also rumblings of a Kenobi standalone movie in development. But there’s one problem… the last time we saw Kenobi it was as a Force Ghost in RETURN OF THE JEDI. And although Lucas saw fit to replace Sebastian Shaw’s Vader with Hayden Christensen on the

recent home video releases, he left Kenobi as Alec Guinness. Would this mean McGregor would have to play the part in

old-bloke make-up to make him look like Guinness? Oh dear. As for the Kenobi solo movie, it’s kind of a no brainer given the character’s continued popularity with THE CLONE WARS. But alas, all of this is speculation until there’s some official announcement from Lucasfilm, which should be soon, surely? Things are a little too quiet of late for my liking. “I have a bad feeling about this...”

R

ecently in the UK to promote the struggling Western blockbuster The Lone Ranger, Arnie Hammer revealed that he’ll be back in

the UK later this year filming his role as Ilya Kuryakin alongside Henry (Man of Steel) Cavill’s Napeleon Solo in the much-anticipated Guy Ritchie reboot of the legendary 1960’s

spy spoof series The Man From U.N.C.L.E. which starred Robert Vaughn as Solo and David McCallum as Kuryakin.

utting its way through the air as you stylishly barrel roll off to the side, the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 is super fun, easy to pickup, but devilishly difficult to master.

Droning on? Not with this Quadrocopter!

Most drones are way out of everybody’s price range, and at £280 the AR Drone 2.0 isn’t exactly cheap, but at least you can own a quadrocopter and be the envy of all of your friends. The 2.0 boasts a 720p HD camera on the front, working alongside a downward facing camera, which can either record to a USB stick mounted inside the drone, or stream straight back to your control device (iOS or Android) with recording available as well as taking still shots. Flight time is restrictive, with each hour long charge giving close to 15 minutes flying, however if you’ve got the money to get one of these, a couple of spare batteries are probably on the shopping list as well. The drone is equipped with 2 hulls, one made from expanded polypropylene, protecting the blades

I see that exit signs are on their way out. I quit my job last week at the helium gas factory - I won’t be spoken to in that tone. I was at the park the other day and I thought, “Why do frisbees get bigger the closer they get?” And then it hit me. I would like to dedicate this months column to my dad who was a roofer. So Eric Bristow came up to me and said, “Why did you put super glue on 1 of my darts?” I said “God you ever going to let that go?!” I went for a meal at my bosses house and his wife asked how many potatoes I would like. I said “1 please.” She said “You don’t have to be polite!”, so I said “1 please you stupid cow!” Teaching must be difficult nowadays. I mean where do you stand? Do you stand at the front, able to write on the board but not see what the children are doing, or do you stand at the back, able to see what they are doing, but unable to write on the board? Nobody has any ideas about this dilemma, not by a long chalk.

hen most children are 11 years old starting Senior school looking at ambitions for their future, how many have

the courage of mind to stay diligent to their goals? Most children at that age are not sure what route they want to take, or most will choose professions that appear glam-

years ago Temilola AdeJohn (known as Temi) one of our local girls from Birmingham embarked on a career in law, her journey has not been straight forward but this article tells of her determination and focus. From her local school George Dixon to the University of London - School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Temi was called to the UK Bar in 2003 (Middle Temple) and, after working for a firm of Solicitors, joined the UK firm Calvert Solicitors at the beginning of 2006. She qualified as a Solicitor in the same year and became a partner at the firm in April 2008. From that time until relocating to the Caribbean in September 2012, she acted as head of the firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department. Temi also became a solicitor-advocate in February

2010, obtaining Higher Rights of Audience to represent clients in all higher UK Courts, including the Royal Courts of Justice and the Old Bailey. Temi was also active in working to develop the youth wing of the Jamaica Diaspora (UK). Temi has gained a reputation among her clients as a tough, no-nonsense litigator and negotiator and has represented clients in a wide range of disputes. Temi’s clients range from listed companies, household names and high net-worth individuals to those seeking sound, cost-effective legal assistance. She is known for her friendly, approachable manner and her proven ability to deliver desired results. Reported cases in which she has been involved include Dearlove -v- Combs [2007] EWCR. This year we are proud to say Temi gained her Legal Education Certificate at the University of the West Indies, Hugh

Wooding Law School, and Trinidad. She is now a practicing barrister at Trinity Chambers, Trinidad. Temi has also had great enthusiasm for community and in active participation in the society continues in Trinidad where has joined colleagues in the Rotary Club in painting classrooms at a local school. If you are wonder where at such a tender age this young lady has such self assurance her name is a clear give away, daughter of one the upstanding women in our community Mrs Camille Ade-John, her latest role is on the board of Governers for Birmingham’s first Hospitality and Catering Studio College Kajans, so much is her passion to give our children the right start. To our young people we say we continue to watch your progress with pride. Well Done Barrister AdeJohn!!!

Dr Melanie Etti

M

elanie Etti from Smethwick went to a local primary where her potential was obvious she passed the 11+ to become a pupil at King Edward Girls School Edgbaston at year 7 to 6th form. School was an arena were Melanie excelled, not just in academia, but also in sport. Melanie is a very good netballer and in year 11 at her first ever trial for England she made it through the England Squad. Melanie has great focus and so first time achievements

although they appear to come easy to her, this is due to great dedication on her part. In year 9 Melanie had made her up her mind she wanted to be a doctor, and shared this with friends, from then on in name the nickname became ‘Dr Etti’ so confident were her peers in Melanie’s ability. In year 11 Melanie received 10A* 1 A at GCSE level, she was also awarded the ‘Creak Memorial Prize’ by her school, a decorative honour for the girl who best served the school. Melanie remained at King Edward to complete her 6th form, in year 12 whilst at the height of her studies, Melanie was also selected for the England U17 Squad. Melanie went on to received 4 grades ‘A’s at A level, setting her well on her way to claiming the profession she so dream about. Melanie puts her ability to be so structured in her studies, down to her parents both

who are both great academics. In fact Melanie’s father is a doctor. Melanie is one of 3 children, and has an older sister who passed her degree in Law and is now well routed in her profession and a younger sister who is in her final year at university, and as you can see ,middle child syndrome did not exist in her house. Family support and encouragement has been very key Melanie stresses to her achievements, and she has much to thank her parents for. Melanie attended Bristol University for 6 years and in January 2013 Melanie had gained her degree in medicine, she also gained a 2:1 in pathology and microbiology is 2010 coming 17th out of a class of 254 and in so doing graduated as Melanie Etti MBChB BSc (Hons). This success story has a personal tinge of pride as Melanie has been one of my netball youngsters for over 10 years and is South Birmingham Netball Clubs first doctor, we are all very proud. ‘Well Done Dr Etti’

auline Hurd, grandmother, mother, treasured family member, community activist and friend. 'P' worked tireless on projects that would help the disadvantaged and those who needed to make their voices heard. She played a key role on Birmingham Reducing Gang Violence and the Independent Police Crime Commission gaining the ultimate respect. After a brief illness Pauline lost her battle with pancreatic cancer, passing away last October. At her memorial service a lasting tribute was made in her memory, a bench in Handsworth Park, Birmingham. A fitting tribute to a stalwart and proud Jamaican who always liked to sit and talk. It was unveiled this August 6, Jamaica Independence Day, led by Mrs. Camille Ade-John who worked tirelessly with the

family to ensure 'P' had a very warming memorial service. Also present was Charles Davis and dignitaries from the Police and the City Council. The bench was a restored by four young offenders from the Community Payback Programme in Bournville, Reverend Carver Anderson commenced proceedings with: “Darling P’s early death reminds us all of our own mortality because she has gone too soon. This bench represents rest, reflection and understanding.” Pauline converted to Islam

some years ago; therefore a Muslim prayer was also shared by her personal friend Saidul Saeed. In his tribute he said: “Having a bench to remember Pauline is very appropriate because if ever you approached her with a problem, the first thing she would say is sit down, calm down. It is good to know that so many people will still be benefiting from the good she has done.” A tribute was also paid by IPCC Deputy Chair, Rachel Cerfontyne who simply said “Many of you will have known her much better and for much longer than me, but you do not need to have known Pauline for long to recognise what a truly special person she was, indeed it was apparent to me at our very first meeting. I admired and respected her from the start and soon grew to love her as I got to know her. “ Gone but not forgotten, Pauline Hurd will always be respected in paths she cross and in this, her adopted city.

tudents from Hereward College looking to move into a career in the Media and Journalism industry are to undertake a work placement at The Phoenix newspaper in Birmingham.

It is hoped that their time at the newspaper will encourage the students to become more confident in their skills and enhance their knowledge.

Some of the things the students will be doing include design work for the paper, writing articles for already established features and starting their very own features.

Working in partnership with the newspaper, Phoenix Managing Director Marcia hopes to help the students develop their knowledge and understanding of the world of media.

A student involved in the partnership, Katy Oakes, said, “I am really looking forward to working here and learning new skills. I have already enjoyed the amount of freedom and creativity I have been allowed to have, it’s allowed me to progress quickly!”

Students will be given the chance to work with staff at the magazine to develop their own features which will be featured either in The Phoenix or in our sister publication, Street Cred.

With a diverse range of students, it is hoped that the students will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the paper and help further promote it within the local community we serve.

The Phoenix Managing Director commented “I am excited to be working with the students of Hereward College to not only help them develop themselves but also to develop this paper. The skills that these students have already shown to us make me confident that big things will be happening in the near future. Watch this space!”

To support the students, they will be guided and helped by senior staff at the newspaper

any learners with Birmingham Adult Education Service in 2012-13 have been following a course which has led them into work. For some this is through getting a job, or gaining the qualifications which make them ready for work. For others it has been about gaining a skill which they then turn into their own business. Some learners started on a pathway to working in adult social care and it is pleasing to report that more than half of them are now working in the care sector. One couple even plans to open their own hotel for elderly people at a seaside resort! Most of those not working yet plan to return and gain the next level of qualification. We wish them all a very successful future. It has been a similar story in childcare with learners gaining employment in schools and nurseries. For many this will enable them to also move on to the next level. One learner has even decided to move into teaching and has gained a place on a course start-

ing this autumn, whilst another has gained promotion at her current school. Congratulations to all. Learners in arts and crafts have

marketing and the legal aspects of setting up a business. It inspired many to do just that and we have a stack of business cards from everyone to prove it. also been making fantastic progress. Many have gained a skill and then turned it into a business after following a Business Enterprise course. This covered financial set up,

Why don’t you come and learn something new with Birmingham Adult Education Service? July saw the launch of Birmingham Adult Education Service’s 2013/14 Learning Directory. As always the directory contains a comprehensive listing of the wide range of exciting courses and learning opportunities available, from September, in BAES centres across the whole of the city. Martin Wassall, Marketing & Information Manager says “Learners join our courses for a whole variety of reasons. We have people studying with us who want to brush up their English and Maths skills to help in their everyday lives. Others want to learn the I.T. skills you need to get on in the modern workplace. Our large arts and crafts programme is also very popular whether you want to see if you can turn a hobby like cake decorating or floristry into a paid career or to learn a new skill and explore your creative side. Starting an adult education class is also a good way to socialise and meet new people. We have people who come along to classes purely for the love of learning and others find it an excellent way to keep their minds active.” At BAES we think we have something to interest everyone. Along with the very popular Foreign Languages, Classroom and Childcare courses we have some new exciting additions to our programme this year - learning how to play the ukulele, and a new range of business set up courses to help any budding en-

trepreneurs. We also have an ever expanding variety of cookery and baking classes suited for people looking to save money but still eat well, or who would like to entertain their friends at home. From Accounts to Yoga, Fast Forward your skills with BAES To find out more about the courses available pick up the 2013/14 Learning Directory at your local BAES centre, library, neighbourhood office or BCC building. If you would like further advice telephone the BAES Information Line on 0121 303 4318. The staff will be happy to try and help find the right course for you. She also reminded the congregation that while Jamaica is full of resources, like its people, an effort must be made to not only be culturally involved with the island, but spiritually too, saying: “As blessed and gifted people, we came from small beginnings and for that we must be spiritually thankful for.” People then marched out with the national flag, going to the

The Court has also had an input in certain changes and I have tried to summarise the more important changes and their effect.

£14,000 per annum, the Court’s view was that the income threshold was disproportionate and unjustified. The judge gave guidelines for consideration and criticised the lack of discretion available. This judgment will offer hope to thousands who simply found the £18,600 threshold difficult and onerous.

Right of Appeal for Family Visitors Abolished

Derivative Residence Card

In July 2012, EEA nationals received certain rights under new amendment Regulations that were introduced. The new laws allow for certain persons to be able to get a right to live in Britain in circumstances, for example, where they have a child who is an EEA national or caring for an EEA national relative. What has been interesting recently, however, is that the application form for this new Derivative Residence Card also provides that persons who are caring for British citizens can also apply for this Residence Card. This is a refreshing and welcoming change although there are drawbacks with the extent of

the rights persons have. It means, therefore, that where it was difficult before to regularise status if an overstayer was caring for a relative or other person in the UK as primary carer, with the new Derivative Residence card, he/ she can now legalise his/her stay in Britain.

New Hope for Low Earners Filing for Partners

An important judgment was

handed down on 5 July 2013 in the case of MM v SSHD (2013) which gives relief and hope to families especially spouses and partners filing for their non-UK spouse/partner, where the £18,600 threshold has been proving a difficulty. The Court has reviewed the requirement and, considering the UK minimum wage of £12,850, with most government workers making about £13,000-

From 25 June 2013, the right to appeal against refusal for a family visitor visa has been abolished. Prior to that date, where close family was refused a visa, an appeal could be made and the applicant submit further information to support their claim rather than make a fresh application. Now, any person who is refused a visitor visa, regardless of their relationship with the Sponsor in the UK, is not allowed a right of appeal, rather, they must submit a new application. This is really a ‘double edged’ sword, as given there was a charge of £140 for an appeal, with a wait of some six (6) months for a hearing, then persons applying for a six month visitor visa will

be somewhat better off as a new application would be at the same fee of approximately £90, and the wait remains approximately 15 days. For persons making applications for 2, 5 and 10 year visas, however, the cost will be more prohibitive in making a new application. Thus, it is extremely important that persons try to ‘get it right first time’ by seeking appropriate advice before applying.

Visa ‘Security Bond’ to be introduced

In June 2013 The Government announced that it was planning to introduce ‘security bonds’ for visitors coming to the UK from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nigeria and Ghana which it considers are ‘high risk’ countries. The intention is that from around October 2013, persons from these countries coming to visit the UK will have to pay a bond of £3,000

before a visitor’s visa is issued. In the event the applicant does not return to his/her home country, the bond would be forfeited. There have been angry reactions from the countries targeted, and there has been a subsequent suggestion that the bond may be lowered. However, it does appear that it will be introduced. Of course, if it does come on stream, then it is likely that it will extend to other countries and, therefore, even if your country is not currently on the list, then keep reading our page to see if it does eventually.

Landlords to be “Immigration Police”

The Government had recently announced that it would require all landlords to check all prospective tenants’ immigration status before allowing them to rent flats and to only rent to persons who are legally in the UK. Failure to carry out the checks would result in a huge fine. After some ‘backlash’, that the majority of private landlords, the government seemed to have diluted its position, but it is highly unlikely that that will be the last we hear of the matter. Watch this space.

ADOPTION AND FOSTERING

W

ith a national shortage of Foster carers across the UK, there are more children than ever who need a caring and loving environment, which every child has the right to experience. Whether a crisis in the family, illness or relationship difficulties could be some of the reasons

There are already so many fantastic individuals who foster and adopt children into their families- but we need more ! At the Phoenix, all of our team are committed to raising awareness of fostering and adoption through our campaign not just for the month of May, but for an entire 12 months!

We will be highlighting the inspiring work of current carers, the extensive support and training that is available and the difference that you could be making in a young persons’ life. If you feel that you can offer this, or even if you would like to find out a little bit more – don’t hesitate! It could make the greatest difference to a child’s life.

heart of the adoption process. The figures are shocking. The new plans will see babies fostered first, to create a stable home at a much earlier stage. We're looking to avoid the disruption that is often damaging to a child's development and detrimental to their future wellbeing." On average, a child waits up to two and a half years to be placed with an adoptive family. Debbie Jones, President of the Association of Directors of

Children's Services, said: "Some good local authorities are already taking steps to place children with families who will become adopters earlier in the child's journey to adoption. This process will not be right for all children or all adopters, but can offer the benefits of early permanence for some." In 2012 Ministers revealed figures which showed that of the 3,660 children under the age of one who were in care in 2010-11, only 60 were adopted.

rime Minister, David Cameron has unveiled a 'foster to adopt' plan for newly-born babies being taken into care. He said that they the law in England will be changed to encourage more councils to allow the babies to be fostered by people who want to adopt them - so more babies can find a loving home earlier. Shocked that so many babies taken in to care at one month wait for up to15 months to be adopted, he says the government pledges to simplify and speed up the adoption process. This means babies can be placed with prospective adoptive parents before a courts’ decision to permanently remove them from their biological parents. At present, only 50% of onemonth-old babies who come to the care system go on to be adopted but wait 15 months to be placed in a permanent, loving home. The PM said: "The need of the children has to be at the very

Q & A On Fostering

T

his month, the BAAF answer some questions about fostering.

How should someone go about become a foster carer?

You should look at the BAAF website and the Fostering Network website: both give lots of advice and guidance about how to start the process and what to expect. The BAAF website will give you a list of Local Authorities and independent Fostering Agencies, who you can contact to talk about fostering and what it will mean for you and your family.

What are the different types of fostering? There are lots of options: You can foster children on a long term basis (where the plan is for them to remain in foster care up

to their 18th Birthday); on a short term basis (where the court may have yet to decide what is going to happen in the long term, or a child in a long term placement needs a short break); you can specialize in fostering children with a learning/physical disability; you can foster children who are sanctuary seeking here in the UK; and you can also foster a baby alongside providing accommodation for the baby’s mother as part of a court assessment process. Specialist training is offered for all types of fostering.

What support networks are available for foster parents? Local Authority and independent agencies are required to offer on-going training for foster carers, this training is designed to help you in your task of being a foster carer, and also puts you in contact with other carers. Agencies also offer the op-

portunity to take part in support groups for foster carers. Support and advice from other carers can be invaluable, as you can share ideas and look at possible solutions to issues that are common between many carers.

How long can the foster process take? The fostering assessment process is an important one, and can feel intrusive at times. However it is important to look at how our life experiences can help us to look after children and young people who have been hurt by adults in the past. It is hard to be precise about the gap between the moment you pick up the phone or email a fostering agency to the moment

a child is placed with you, as people’s personal circumstances differ.

You should expect however that the assessment process should be com-

pleted in no longer than 5-6 months. This will include you meeting a panel of people experienced in fostering who will look at your application. To find out more about foster care please visit http://www. baaf.org.uk/info/fostering

O

n Thursday 30th August NEC Birmingham held a special event to promote ‘Motorcycle Live 2013’. Professional Moto GP riders,

members of the public and celebrities joined a 'Ride out to Silverstone", which looked amazing, as the mass of bikes left the NEC to head down to Silverstone. The event in November prom-

ises to be an exciting spectacle with everything from racing bikes to bikes designed and built for specific tasks, and everything inbetween. If the atmosphere before the ride out was anything to

go by, Motorcycle Live 2013 will be electrifying when it graces the NEC. From Honda to Suzuki, the ride out contained some beautiful and unique motorbikes, bringing enjoyment to the faces of attendees. Steve Parrish from the BBC explained that the reason the event was created was to raise money for Charity, and son of legend-

ary rider Niall McKenzie, Taylor, advised "If you're looking to go into Motorsports, don't!" due to the sheer number of possible injuries you can sustain by being a professional rider, and reflected on how he got started in the sport thanks to the influence of his father. Overall there was a sensational buzz around the place as there

was a great feeling for the moto sports, with everyone loving the sport and the amazing speed of the bikes. The anticipation for the event to be held in November at the NEC Birmingham is huge, it’s going to be an absolutely incredible out come. After watching the ride out it’ll stay in the mind of many people all the way until the actual event!

Major golf development launched in Pype Hayes

P

ype Hayes Golf Course, Gym and Clubhouse were officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham following a £2m refurbishment by social enterprise Mytime Active. This is the first major investment in the region from Mytime Active who last year took on a 50-year contract to run Birmingham City Council’s seven golf courses. The club in Sutton Coldfield, which was destroyed by a fire in 2009, has been transformed into a state-of-theart community space which now boasts stylish function suites, a new café/restaurant and high quality changing rooms. The clubhouse also includes a modern gym with an impressive 60 stations, and top of the range Precor equipment for people of all ages and abilities. Significant improvements have also been made to the golf course. The Lord Mayor, Cllr Mike Leddy, said: “I was very pleased to officially open this fantastic facility and encourage the whole community to come along and enjoy the wide range of activities on offer”. Steve Price, Mytime Active CEO said: “We are delighted to open the doors of this new clubhouse which provides an excellent, long overdue facility for golfers and gym enthusiasts as well as a perfect venue for corporate and family functions. This is an investment plan that will transform the golfing experience across Birmingham. The success of this project could not have been achieved without the strong relationship between Mytime Active and Birmingham City Coun- l (L-R) Mytime Active Chief Executive Steve Price, The Lord Mayor, Cllr Mike Leddy and Mytime Active Chairman Dennis cil, providing the platform for change, marking an exciting Barkway time for golfers within the region”.

Albion Continued from Back Page the registered charity with vital funds to continue supporting local people in the local area. To help participants raise the required amount, a number of fundraising events will be held to raise awareness. Included in the trip is an incredible rift valley adventure day, comprising of a morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, a stop off at the earth’s equator, and an adventure trail at Thomson Falls, near Nyahururu. Albion Foundation’s Business Development Manager, Jon Ross, said: “We are delighted to be involved with African Adventures. It’s great that fans will get the opportunity to represent the club in another country, where they will be doing such fantastic work. The trip will not only make a massive difference to the local community in Kenya, but will also have a huge impact on the local community in the West Midlands.” The official trip launch, at The Hawthorns on September 4, provides prospective volunteers with all the information they need ahead of the trip. They then trained in the Rajamangala National Stadium in the evening. Sports a shining light in UK economy

S

port’s contribution to the English economy has been revealed to be £20.3 billion a year, with grassroots sport responsible for well over half of this total. The study, which was commissioned by Sport England, shows that the growth in sport has outstripped the English economy as a whole – and the sector was resilient when the recession struck. The research puts sport within the top 15 industry sectors in England, having a bigger impact on the economy than telecoms services, car sales and repairs, insurance and accounting. £11.78 billion of sport’s contri-

bution comes from people playing sport and related expenditure such as sports equipment and coaching, while £8.5 billion comes from people’s consumption of sport such as watching elite sport live or on TV, sports-

related TV subscriptions and sports gambling. More than 440,000 people have sport-related jobs, accounting for 2.3% of all employment. Sport England’s Chair, Nick Bitel, said: “This report show that as well as improving the

lives of millions of people grassroots sport is also having a huge impact on our economy. Put alongside the enormous value of the health benefits that sport delivers, it’s hard to overstate the sector’s contribution to our country.” The report also examines the wider economic value of sport such as improving educational attainment and improving health. The annual value of health benefits generated by grassroots sport is put at £11.2 billion, with a £1.7 billion saving in healthcare costs. The economic value of sport-related volunteering is estimated to be £2.7 billion.

Transfer specialist in deal with PSG

transfer specialist MoneyGram has entered into a partnership with Ligue 1 champion Paris Saint-Germain which will see them being the main sponsors of the French giants. The three year deal will allow the champions to build on a new strategy focusing on its brand and innovation following the transfer of its stock market listing in May from the New York Stock Exchange to NASDAQ. This agreement represents another step in the development of the Paris Saint-Germain brand, with MoneyGram already operating in 198 countries and boasting more than 327,000 outlets around the world. It's a new step for MoneyGram, who chose to sponsor the French club for the coming three sea-

sons, with Guillaume Dewaël, France vice-president of MoneyGram saying: "This is a very strategic partnership for MoneyGram, because it will reinforce our visibility in France, but also internationally and act as a real catalyst for our development. Our clients are our main priority, as we’ll enable them to remain close and present in the lives of their families that remained

in the country of origin. With Paris Saint-Germain, we want to share strong emotions with our clients by celebrating the universal values of sport and friendship." PSG Director General, JeanClaude Blanc, said: "By signing with MoneyGram, Paris Saint-Germain is associating itself with an international economic player that has an essential role in enabling individuals to financially support their loved ones. The partnership of these two brands constitutes a formidable window of global visibility." The partnership between Paris Saint-Germain and MoneyGram is based on a series of events to heighten visibility of the brands and includes a complete hospitality package at Paris Saint-Germain matches and the creation of cross-promotional events.

Ioan Achiriloaie will represent his country, Romania, in the downhill and super combined skiing, in Sochi, in February. Benefitting from being part of the university’s Scholarship scheme he said he would never had a chance of being selected had it not been for the help and support of Coventry University

itself. Describing being selected to represent his country at the 2014 Winter Olympics, Ioan said: “It was an honour. Being part of the Olympic team of Romania is amazing. I thank Coventry University not only for the financial support provided, but also the moral support.” The XXII Olympic Winter Games will be held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana with ninety-eight events in fifteen winter sports taking place.

est Bromwich Albion’s ‘Albion Foundation’ has teamed up with African Adventures to offer supporters the opportunity to spend seven days working with a range of community projects in a developing area of south-western Kenya. In May, 2014, a group of Baggies fans will embark on the charity’s first-ever group trip to sub-Saharan Africa, to give something back to the international community, whilst enjoying a unique travel experience. From football coaching and building work to teaching in schools and community work with children, there are a number of project roles to choose from and the trip will require dynamic, enthusiastic individuals to help us achieve our goal of improving the lives of people less fortunate than us. You do not need to be qualified in your chosen field – you will be provided with teaching/sports coaching resources prior to departure to support you. The trip also aims to raise £20,000 for the Foundation, which will provide
