Taking the plunge for Sport Relief l

David Walliams took on and beat the Thames during his heroic five-day swim in aid of Sport Relief down one of the world’s most famous rivers

D

avid Walliams was one of the courageous Sport Relief stars whose extraordinary feats of bravery and endurance helped this year’s appeal smash through the £50m barrier. The River Thames is about as faraway from the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean that you can get, but that did not deter Walliams from swimming its full 140-mile length in just five days – the amazing equivalent of swimming the English Channel seven times. During his week of agony, wonderman Walliams suffered sickness and injury but refused to throw in the towel even when it looked as though the last few miles were going to prove beyond him. After completing the torturous BT Sport Relief Challenge, the Little Britain star declared: “I would like to thank all those

people who gave us their support and donations. I’ve seen the difference their money can make and every single person who gave can know they’ve done something very special.” The money raised through Sport Relief will soon be hard at work. The charity has

already committed to spending £20million to improve the lives of a million people living in urban slums in Africa. This includes £10million from the UK Government, which matched pound for pound £10million of the money raised by the British public that Comic Relief will

be spending on urban slums. In addition, a grant of £5million has been committed to the GAVI Alliance, which will be spent on life-saving vaccines for children in the poorest parts of Africa. This includes a £2.5m contribution from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the GAVI Matching Fund and money raised through the Bishop’s Week of Hell during which comedian John Bishop ran, cycled and rowed 295 miles from Paris to London in five days. More than one million men, women and children also took part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile to raise cash to change lives at home and across the world’s poorest countries. l See Page 21 for news of a Downing Street welcome for the Sport Relief celebrities including Helen Skelton, who completed a 500-mile Polar Challenge.

Diamond plans to sparkle There is a distinctly 1950’s feel to Birmingham’s four-day celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee from June 2-5. There are vintage parades and nostalgic live music in the city centre, 50’s themed entertainments at the annual Spring Festival in Cannon Hill Park and a recreation of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party from Disney’s 1951 classic movie adaptation of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at the Young Reader’s Book Bash. People will also be able to mark this special anniversary by holding ‘Jubilee Big Lunches’ in their communities on Sunday June 3. Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture says: “The Diamond Jubilee will unite people of all ages and interests. From street parties to the Spring Fair, Birmingham Pride to the Book Bash, Birmingham will have a diverse range of exciting events.”

Cameron backing for mayor Elected mayors will initially have direct access to the Prime Minister, Birmingham Chamber of Commerce president Michael Ward was told at a Downing Street meeting. David Cameron is to chair the first meeting of the committee of mayors. Birmingham voters will take part in a referendum on Thursday, May 3 to decide if they want a mayor for the city. If they vote yes, the city will go to the polls on November 15. Mr Ward said: “The whole issue of elected mayors seems to have cross-party support so it is vitally important that Birmingham votes in favour.

Basketball for disabled people in Wolverhampton has also been boosted with funding going to Wolverhampton Rhinos that will be used to promote and raise awareness of wheelchair sports. Wolverhampton South District Scouts will make insulation improvements to the walls of their base, thanks to a grant from the

Community Fund while The Switch Project, which runs arts workshops for young people was handed a grant to help them deliver further activities and sessions to support young people in the city. And Friends of the Coppice have been awarded a grant to use for encouraging educational visits from schools and involving youngsters in planting and other activities. Tim Westwood, Wolverhamp-

ton City Council’s Assistant Director for Schools, Skills and Learning, said: “This is another excellent example of the city’s Building Schools for Future programme providing wider benefits to the community. “These awards will ensure that these diverse and important groups can not only carry on providing vital initiatives and schemes but also increase the services they offer to residents,” he added.

Prospect

“The fact that the Prime Minister said he would chair the first meeting is a clear indication that he is in favour. “These meetings will become a regular feature and it is clear that any city with an elected mayor gives rise to the prospect of direct access to the Cabinet, by-passing the possibility of getting bogged down in Whitehall red tape. “With the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) also having direct access through chair Andy Street, this will make things happen quicker.”

Youngsters get first rung on the ladder

Two apprentices have spoken of their delight at securing the first step on the career ladder. Dean Fisher, aged 18, from Low Hill and Zak Baker, 17, from East Park are among 15 apprentices just taken on by Wolverhampton City Council. Dean and Zak are working in facilities and building maintenance – the department responsible for the maintenance and servicing of mechanical and electrical equipment across all council buildings. Guided by experienced professionals, the duo are gaining a range of experience including helping to maintain the council’s buildings, designing building services for new or refurbished buildings, carrying out surveys and assisting with managing repairs and breakdowns. Dean, a former pupil at Moreton

School, in Bushbury, said: “What I’m learning here is something you can’t experience at college. I’m not just sitting in a classroom being told about a boiler, I can go up to one and see what’s what. “This is opening doors for me and is a great opportunity to do something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Enthusiastic

Zak, who went to Deansfield School, was equally enthusiastic about the opportunity. He said: “I’m learning so much, I can’t believe what it takes to run a building the size of the Civic Centre.” The council’s apprenticeship programme is aimed primarily at 16 to 18-year-olds. Those selected are offered a one year fixed-term contract at a wage of £150 per week.

Mum wants black history in schools

A

West Midlands mother is hoping to take get her campaign for black history to be taught in schools discussed in Parliament. Stephanie Pitter, a mum of four from Quinton in Birmingham, feels that more indepth discussion of black history is needed in the classroom to help break down racial barriers and create greater understanding. “I want black history to become part of the national currticulum to bring about unity and awareness of what is an authentic warm culture. “I’m looking to get 100,000 signatures which would be enough to get the issue debated in the House of Commons. “At present people such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King are taught but black history is much more than that.

l Stephanie Pitter with some campaign supporters “People such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King are significant of course, but safe,” she said. “We need to teach our children much more going into it in greater depth from the 1500s to 1800s to

see how people used to live.” While many schools promote Black History Month every October Stephanie feels that this does not always address the subject in the right way.

Aftab’s legacy is clear to see By Thaiba Ishtiaq

I

’m Aftab Rahman – restaurateur, chef, father, Bangladeshi, brother, husband, adopted Brummie, charity patron, gardener, photographer. A man, who for years has committed himself to furthering cohesion in the community, provides a somewhat humble description of himself. He has become a ‘leading light’ of the Bangladeshi community after establishing several community organisations, the most recent being Legacy West Midlands. Legacy WM began as a group with an interest to secure heritage and use it to build cohesion between communities. It is the platform from which Aftab, as Director, was able to launch the ‘Bangla Food Journeys’ project. The project involves a series of interviews with inspiring members of the Bangladeshi community, leading to the publication of a book. In keeping with his dedication to community cohesion, Aftab headed food workshops at various locations following the book launch. He describes the project as a ‘model’ that can be adapted to any community.

l

Businessman, author and chef, but first and foremost a loving father to daughter Maya

Achievement

Aftab attended Holte School after arriving in Lozells from Bangladesh in 1976, and left with no qualifications. His next few years were spent working in restaurants all over the country, until he landed a job at Currys. He explains how this was an achievement for a young Bangladeshi with no qualifications. “It proved that I could do something other than work in restaurants,” Aftab said. He went on to enrol at North Birmingham College, all the while continuing his voluntary work such as managing Lozells Strikers football team, at just 19.

l

Aftab Rahman

“The Strikers weren’t just a football team. We were there to mentor and support the youth. Many of the players on the team have since pursued careers in youth work,” he said. He supported the team for 18 years, set up the Broadway School club, Shapla, and subsequently the Shapla Football League, which is still on the ball today.

Health support for emergency crews Around 50 members of staff from West Midlands Ambulance Service headquarters in Brierley Hill took advantage of the opportunity to learn more about their own health and wellbeing. The staff who work in Emergency Operations dealing with 999 calls were joined by others from non-operations such has Workforce, Quality, IT and Estates. The session was run by the public health team from Dudley PCT and included

services such as stop smoking, a health trainer and alcohol awareness. Human Resources Advisor, Lucy Mackcracken, said: “There was a really positive turnout from all sections of staff. “I know that 10 people are planning to stub out their cigarettes permanently with help from the stop smoking service and a number of others have signed up for the weight management programme so the support will continue.”

His ‘can-do’ philosophy saw him launch his own business at the age of 21, and although it lasted briefly, it gave Aftab a lifetime of confidence and self-belief. This prompted him to complete his BTEC Finance and Management course, and lay the foundations of his most prolific achievement; the Bangladeshi Youth Forum (BYF). Alongside the 10 years he devoted to the BYF, he completed a Youth and Community Work degree leading to a Postgraduate Management Studies and an Msc Management and Organisational Development. He pursued a career at the Government Office for the West Midlands as Community Cohesion Co-ordinator. At the time, he was the youngest most senior member in that position, and the only one of Asian descent. After a spell with Urban Living as Community Cohesion Executive, the foundations were laid for Legacy WM.

Inspiration

Along the way Aftab has established a co-ownership at Mint Indian and Bangladeshi Cuisine. As a budding amateur photographer, he exhibited his work at The Drum in 2006, producing ‘Back Home – Photo Diary of Bangladesh’ as a supplementary booklet. More recently he has opened his own café-bar-restaurant venture; The Bay Leaf. He has also undertaken the role of secretary at the Asian Resource Centre in Handsworth for the past 16 years. Married, with two daughters, Aftab speaks fondly of his proudest achievement, “we have two amazing daughters, Maya, 5 and Leya, 18 months”. This is Aftab Rahman – a gifted entity, a compassionately driven businessman, an inspiration for the youth, a devoted father and a true credit to his community.

ince arriving in the UK at the age of 13, with no knowledge of British culture or language, the one thing Munir Ahmad did know was that he wanted to work for himself. Attending what he describes as the ‘immigrant school’, he left at 16, and told his father “I want my own business”. His father, a factory worker working seven days a week and earning the equivalent of only £1 a day, invested his savings of £1,000 in the Ahmad family’s first business venture; a radio repair shop on Soho Road. “We asked the owner for advice on starting our own business. He said, ‘take mine!’ This was on a Friday. By Monday I had the keys to the business in my hands.” says Munir. Then 19-year-old, Munir, the eldest of eight children, worked hard and honest along with his father and siblings selling radio and audio equipment.

Thriving

Together they established Electro Centre in 1974, which took off and has continued to grow. Over the years his family went on to take their shares from the business and move on with their lives. Munir took sole possession of Electro Centre 10 years ago and persisted working hard with his wife, two sons and two daughters. As time has passed his two sonin-laws have also joined the thriving business. Munir’s determination to be a successful business man has taken him from strength to strength. Over the 38 years that Electro Centre has been established, Munir has also developed Soho City, a two-story shopping complex

comprising of 24 units which he lets out to businesses. He also owns two electrical storage warehouses, to facilitate the booming online business Electro Centre now generates. It has developed from a small radio shop to, in effect, a multimillion pound enterprise. With a turnover of £27 million last year, Munir resolves to do even better this year “We don’t just sell radios any more. We now do import, export, retail and wholesale. We are very well known and I am very proud of what we have created,” he said. With his children now trained in the ways of business, one may

think Munir would have taken a back step – but you couldn’t be more wrong! Still in the thick of things, Munir proudly proclaimed: “I am still the first to arrive and the last to leave. I always open and close the showroom myself.” All in all Munir Ahmad is an admirable man. Hard working and dedicated, he prides himself in providing the best service for his customers. His devotion to his family is his incentive. From the tender age of 16, he knew what he had to do to provide for his family, and even now, at the age of 55, he remains as committed as ever.

Acorns in dog walk

Acorns Children’s Hospice has organised a sponsored dog walk around the beautiful setting of Sutton Park on Sunday, May 27 to help raise vital funds for local life-limited and life-threatened children. Canines can bring their human companions to walk either 3km or 6km around the picturesque landscape, included in English Heritage’s list of historic parks and heath land. It promises to be a great day out for all the family and also raise money for a worthy local cause.

Events manager at Acorns, Kerrie Davies, said “We are calling all canines to sign up now and be a part of something different! “This big event provides a fun day out for dogs & owners from all walks of life, young and old, and by taking part, a real difference will be made to young people’s lives in our community. “All it takes is £5 to enter and both canine and companion alike can enjoy a lovely day out to support local families. On signing up participants will receive a fundraising pack with helpful tips and advice.

The 17 volunteers turning up every week to work on a dedicated plot and greenhouse in the Walled Kitchen Garden at Winterbourne, not only got their hands dirty, but also catalogued their unique experience via artwork and photography. Mayor invitation for foster carers

F

oster carers who have offered a home to scores of children over the years have been thanked for their efforts by the Mayor of Walsall. Councillor Garry Perry invited a group of retiring foster carers to join him in the Mayor’s Parlour for a special tea and to present them with a certificate and flowers for all their efforts. Guests included Ann Wootton who has been fostering since 1986 and Mindell Duncan who has been a foster carer since 1991. Mother-of-four Ann, aged 68, of Beechdale, became a foster carer through the sessional work she was doing at that time. She explained to the Mayor that she was still in touch with some of her former foster children, some of whom were in their 20s and 30s. “It has its ups and downs as

l Ann Wootton with her grand-daughter Sabrina Wootton, the Mayor of Walsall Councillor Garry Perry, Mindell Duncan and her daughter Janice Duncan you’d expect,” she said. “But it is a very rewarding thing to do, to make a difference to a child’s life. “I couldn’t have done it without the backing of my family and I also had plenty of support from the council.”

For Mindell, 69, of Caldmore, it is the satisfaction of seeing children change their lives that has made her role as a foster carer so fulfilling. “Sometimes you have children who don’t seem interested and

need encouragement to go to school for instance but with support they really change and that’s a lovely thing to see,” said the mother-of-five. “I still have letters that many have written to me to thank me and I’m very proud of that.” The Mayor praised the foster carers for the difference they have made to children in Walsall. He said: “I know from my own perspective the valuable role that you have played in our borough’s life – we are going to miss you. “Your advice and experience through your many years of service can be passed on to other foster carers coming through so your good work will continue,” he added. Walsall particularly needs foster carers from different ethnic groups and people who are happy to offer homes to siblings and older children with complex needs.

A massive programme of nature conservation is to be carried out at Sandwell Valley Country Park. It is part of a scheme to improve land around the Forge Mill Lake area that started last year. It followed the council getting a £70,000 grant to enable the improvements to be carried out. The grant is being used to carry out a range of improvements, ranging from tree planting to woodland management, wetland management and wildflower meadow improvements. It will also include a certain amount of tree thinning around the lake. Last year a large amount of overgrown vegetation was cleared from the island at Forge Mill Lake. Jo Miskin, projects and community liaison officer, said: “The next stage of the island work at Forge Mill Lake is clearance of vegetation on the banks of the lake opposite the island. “We are trying to encourage ground-nesting birds onto the

island and heavily vegetated banks with tall trees will not help us to achieve this – the more sparce, the better,” he added. It is also planned to improve the shrubbery at Jubilee Woods by the side of Swan Pool. As part of the programme of work a 1,000m stretch of footpath around the lake linking Forge Mill Farm with the RSPB Nature Centre, has just been improved.

wo recent events have brought renewed optimism to the issue of youth rehabilitation in the Cayman Islands. The Ministry of Community Affairs, Gender and Housing held a groundbreaking ceremony for a purpose-built youth rehabilitation facility – the Cayman Islands Youth Centre. This was preceded by the Ministry’s launch of a new Therapeutic Community Programme at the Bonaventure Boys Home (BBH), in partnership with the Children and Youth Services (CAYS) Foundation. Both facilities will follow the Therapeutic Community Programme – based on the renowned Missouri Model which focuses on rehabilitation and resolving issues in peer-group settings. Acknowledging the importance of these developments, Hon. Mark Scotland presented remarks on behalf of Premier McKeeva Bush and said: “With these steps, we meet the constitutional requirement to separate juveniles from adult prisoners, and, in so doing, enhance the opportunity for delinquent youths to become productive members of our country.”

Tourism numbers on the up The Caribbean recorded a rise in tourist arrivals last year when compared to 2010, with further growth forecast this year. The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the authority on Caribbean tourism arrival statistics and visitor spend, announced that 23.8 million stay over visitors came to the region in 2011, an increase of 3.3% over 2010. Cruise passenger arrivals, however, were flat, rising marginally by 0.3% to 20.6 million. “The Caribbean tourism industry is holding its own, remaining afloat and resilient amidst turbulence in the marketplace,” Sean Smith, the CTO’s statistical specialist, said at the regional development agency’s State of the Industry news conference in Barbados.

Strong

“Tourist arrivals to the Caribbean region remained buoyant in 2011, continuing the recovery process which began in 2010.” The rise in arrivals came on the back of a strong performance during the winter, although there was less than anticipated growth in the summer months. “Tourist arrivals during the winter months were up 4.4% over the previous winter, which had grown by 3.9% over 2009. “The summer period ending December recorded a lower than expected increase of three per cent,” Smith revealed. High unemployment in the major source markets, pressure on the monetary and fiscal systems, as well as high oil prices continued to be of concern to the region, the CTO official added.

Advisory help for travellers The Boots Travel Health Service has just opened in Birmingham offering a convenient way for travellers to find out about and receive vaccinations and medication before jetting off on holiday. Run in collaboration with the Medical Advisory Service for Travellers Abroad (MASTA), the service offers the chance to discuss travel health needs with a specialist MASTA nurse, via a telephone consultation, who will create a travel health plan tailored for you for £20. The nurse will then book an appointment for you to pop into Boots where a pharmacist can offer advice, administer the vaccinations needed and supply the relevant medications. Boots UK Pharmacist Angela Chalmers said: “We often get vaccinations to protect against diseases at home, such as annual flu vaccinations, but it’s easy to forget to protect your health when going abroad. “Vaccinations and malaria prevention medication can help protect you and your family.”

Health alert on shisha smoking

T

he facts about shisha smoking have been unveiled by a brand new campaign launched this month by NHS Coventry and Coventry City Council. Shisha is a fruit scented tobacco smoked through an ornate waterpipe – sometimes also known as ‘hookah’, ‘narghile’ or ‘hubble bubble’. It dates back over 500 years and originated across India and the Middle East. Many people will have seen or tried shisha while on holiday in places like Dubai and Egypt and shisha bars have also begun opening up across the city, often decked out with low stools and soft furnishings to create an inviting atmosphere. National and local evidence suggests that shisha smoking is becoming increasingly popular –

l

Health experts say shisha is as dangerous as cigarettes

particularly amongst young people, but there are concerns that many are under the false impression that shisha is a safer alternative to cigarettes Dr Tanya Richardson, Consultant in Public Health at NHS

Coventry, said: “In reality, shisha smoking has been linked to the same kinds of diseases as cigarette smoking including heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease and problems during pregnancy. “Shisha tobacco contains a mix-

ture of sweet smelling fruit, molasses (sugar) and herbs it is easy to understand why many people are under the impression that it is a less harmful type of smoking. “The bubbling water also creates the illusion that the smoke is being purified and cleaned.” Councillor Joe Clifford at Coventry City Council, said: “We hope that this campaign will give people the information they need to make an informed choice. Shisha is emerging as the tobacco version of the alcopop and we fear could provide an easy route for young people to start smoking. “The Council is also aware of the sudden rise in the number of shisha bars in the city and is currently leading a joint partnership initiative to make sure that they are fully aware of all the legislation linked to sales of tobacco.”

Brush up on sinus problems Some nine million people in the UK suffer from sinusitis which is an inflammation of the lining of the sinuses. It is often caused by a viral or bacterial infection and symptoms include a blocked or runny nose, pain and tenderness in the face and a high temperature. Often teeth may appear to ache. However, dental problems such as toothache and bad breath are also signs of sinusitis. Bad breath may be a warning sign of potential gum disease – the main cause of tooth loss. It is usually caused by the smelly gases released by bacteria that coat teeth, gums and tongue and reflects poor oral health. A recent study in America has discovered dental-related diseases in 100% of patients suffering from sinusitis Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation Dr Nigel Carter said: “Taking care of your oral health takes on more and more significance every time a link to the state of overall health is made.”

Glen’s service proving a tonic for community In a community as sprawling and diverse as Aston, Buckingham Pharmacy serves as a reminder of the true spirit of the area whilst delivering a message of living well in harmony. Situated at the Witton Island, a throw-in from Villa Park stadium, the dispensing pharmacy is seen as a hub in that people are encouraged to go there, at any time, to discuss any general health issues surrounding them as individuals, service providers or groups. Buckingham Pharmacy is run by Glen Blackwood who although is fairly new to his current address, has been an integral part of the development of the area for some time.

For over 20-years, the name Buckingham Pharmacy has been synonymous with Aston, from its original situ on the main Witton Road stretch before moving to its Bevington Road home just around the corner. Using his personal skills, together with his BSc. – gained at Aston University – to facilitate his role in the ‘frontline’ of healthy living, the 50-year-old former George Dixon School pupil lives by his personal ethos of: “Being part of the community, your community”. He continues: “As I’m from the area, and very proud to be too, I’m always thinking that it’s always best to change things from the inside, as opposed to the alternate. It’s about what can I contribute?’

“Health is a lifestyle thing. People invest in material things so, as the human body is one of God’s miracles we should invest, more so, in it. It’s that simple.” Each patient or customer is No.1 to Glen so no-one has to ever feel intimidated to talk to him. Quite the contrary, in fact to Glen, every individual is seen as his personal friend.” One of the main healthy living programmes being pushed at Buckingham Pharmacy is a ‘drop-in’ stop smoking clinic,

where people are encouraged, by the cheapest, simplest and most effective of means to quit. Glen Blackwood is passionately grateful for the support he’s received from the multiculturally diverse communities in and around Aston, a support he shares especially with his children, 20-year-old twins, Gino and Kimberley. For them, it’s just a case of continuing the positive legacy of Glen and Buckingham Pharmacy for generations to come.

ove: a simple word with the potential to create the strongest of bonds. A universal language understood by all. A notion transcending all race, religion, culture and boundaries, and also the theme of the Islamic Society of Britain’s 19th annual Islam Awareness Week (IAW). The IAW was created in 1994 with the simple aim of ‘raising awareness’ and ‘removing misconceptions’ about Britain’s second largest faith group. Each year the dedicated national team of volunteers organise activities and events all over the UK in a bid to open dialogues about the Islamic way of life; to promote social cohesion through the celebration of arts and culture; and to thus improve relationships between different communities. This year was no different. The IAW, supporting the Prince’s Trust West Midlands, was launched with an array of events and activities taking place all over Birmingham.

Speeches

l Revd Martin Stephenson

The ‘Families Together’ event took place at St. Peter’s Church in Hall Green. As the name suggests, the event provided something for all the family. From bouncy castles to face painting for the kids to exhibition stalls and thought-provoking speeches for the adults. Waseema Aslam organised the event under the umbrella of IAW in an attempt to engage her local community which consists of people from all faiths and cultures. “The event at St. Peter’s was driven by my desire to address the negative stereotypes put out by mainstream media about Muslims, as well as a belief that it is important for people in a community to connect,” she said. “I had previously been involved with Islam Awareness Week and so sought to use that principle as a springboard. The event was planned to allow fami-

lies of different faiths to come together in an informal environment and have a fun time whilst learning about each other.” Nearly two years ago Waseema had approached the Revd. Martin Stephenson, Vicar at St. Peters, to express her wish for her Muslim friends to learn more about St. Peters and in particular view the extraordinary ‘Prayer Mat Windows’. “Our windows are based on designs of Turkish prayer mats and are an unusual feature of our church, celebrating the praying which both Christianity and Islam practise day by day,” said Revd Stephenson. Echoes of the importance of ‘love thy neighbour’ rang through the magnificent church as he provided the Christian perspective of love, to a diverse audience. “It is an important part of our Christian calling to be at the heart of our lo-

l Josie, 5, gets involved with the art project at St Peter’s with event organiser Wassema Aslam looking on cal community. With fellow Christians in Hall Green, over the last 10 years we have been learning more about other faith communities and celebrating the many things we have in common.” Rehanah Sadiq, the muslim chaplain at QE, provided the insight into love from an Islamic perspective. Drawing upon the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, she spoke of the importance of loving one another irrespective of religion or race. Of how the teachings of over 1400 years ago can still be applied to today’s society, because the one thing common between us all, is the ability to love. The aim was to establish that much needed connection between faith communities. For which, as Waseema correctly identified, there are “few opportunities to happen naturally”. So one can imagine her delight when she was approached by Sylvia Fry, a member of the congregation at St. Peters, who shared the same vision. Together they

composed a team of interested individuals in and around Hall Green, and the rest is history. The children were kept smiling with various activities, something that Uzma Minhas, founder of ‘Hubb Al Quran’, an afterschool club focusing on teaching Islam by way of fun, arts and crafts based learning, would know all about “It was nice to see everybody; mixing, talking, eating and laughing together. My children were running around the church going from workshop to workshop making things, getting their face painted and much much more. I will definitely be helping out on the next event,” she said. Waseema added: “It was wonderful to see such large numbers of people participating in such a relaxed and friendly environment. I think the event achieved more than we had hoped for and we are hoping to continue and build upon our success.”

School chalks up success A West Midlands school is celebrating after being given teaching school status. Lightwoods Primary in Oldbury, is one of only about 100 schools in England to be granted the coveted honour. It has been made by the National College for School Leadership and it now entitles the school to lead the training and professional development for staff. Elaine Bowen, headteacher at Lightwoods, said: “We are extremely pleased to gain this status which recognises our work and gives us further opportunities to share our practice with others.” Steve Munby, Chief Executive of the National College, said: “Teaching schools like Lightwoods need to be at the top of their game to take on this role – outstanding in their own performance and have a track record of raising standards through school-to-school support. “Trainees can learn from the best teachers and those who want to move up the career ladder are exposed to excellent practice within and beyond their immediate school.”

Students add dash of spice to their studies I

l University students gained an insight into food production on a tour of Panesar Foods

t’s not all lecture theatres and lab work for one group of students, as they were invited to spice up their studies with a visit to learn how curry sauces are made on a commercial scale at Tipton’s Panesar Foods. Undergraduates studying for a Dietetics BSc (Hons) degree at Coventry University learn all about nutrition and related subjects areas such as biochemistry and food science, human physiology, clinical medicine, behavioural science to help promote diet and lifestyle changes, and diet therapy to treat and prevent disease. An essential part of the course to become a registered dietitian involves field work; allowing the students to see the theory put into practice. With people leading increasingly busy lives, many take advantage of ready meals, so it’s

important for dieticians to understand the processes involved in their production. Many food producers don’t allow visitors onto their factory floors, which is why a group of first year Dietetics students were so delighted to get an invitation from one of the region’s top producers of cook-in sauces.

Understanding

Carla Phillips, Coventry University Senior Lecturer in Dietetics said: “Thanks to Panesar our students have been given a rare insight into the food industry. “Much of the food consumed by people in the UK is pre-prepared and pre-packaged, so it is vital future dietitians have an understanding of what goes into these sorts of foods. “It was amazing that an organisation with such an impressive profile allowed our students to gain hands-on experience.”

eorge Céspedes studied dance and choreography at the National School of Dance in Cuba. After graduating in 1997 he joined DCC as a dancer and choreographer. Now in his early 30s, Céspedes has created nearly 20 works including Mambo 3XXI. Commissioned by Dance Consortium, Sadler’s Wells and DanceEast, Mambo 3XXI had its UK premiere in 2010 and was nominated for Olivier and TMA Awards. DP: So where did you find inspiration for your work Mambo 3XXI which will be performed in Birmingham this spring? GC: Mambo was commissioned by the British Dance Consortium who asked me

to make a piece for them. I said ‘yes’ and I started to find my own ideas, my own music and my own stuff. Then one day they sent me an email saying they would like to have a piece to Cuban music with Cuban rhythm. But I said ‘I am not the guy for this’. We have so many clichés about Cuba – Salsa,

black guys, whatever – and I am not the right person to do that but I can put you in contact with someone who could do this kind of show, who could represent our culture in the way you would like it to be represented. But they said ‘no’, they liked my style and they wanted me to work with them. So I said

Now with his debut studio album ‘Electronic Earth’ set for release, Labrinth is getting ready for superstardom and will celebrate its success by supporting Drake at the LG as part of the US rapper’s ‘Club Paradise’ Tour. Labrinth – real name Timothy McKenzie – is signed to Simon Cowell’s Syco label and was the first non-talent show signing in six years. He was initially tipped as a producer but was signed as a solo act when his potential became apparent. Since then, he has worked with top urban artists, including Tinie Tempah and Devlin, and he also appeared on the star-studded Children in Need 2011 single ‘Teardrop’ – a cover of the Massive Attack song – under the name ‘The Collective’.

‘yes’, but under my terms. So I did a lot of research and I found Mambo. When I found the music I didn’t want to perform it like that so I went to see a friend who makes electronic music and they made new pieces with the style of Mambo. Then I went to the studio and I took the real dance of Mambo and I developed it and made it into my own way. My idea was to present our rhythm and our culture but in a different way. I am really tired of the clichés. Cuba is a cliché for the whole world. I am a Cuban but I don’t like what people think Cuban culture is. Cuba is more than Salsa. People only know what happens in Havana, but Havana is not Cuba. It is just a small per cent of Cuban culture. I also wanted to tell people how young people like me see our culture as it is not the same as old people in Havana. DP: So what is it like being a young person in Cuba? GC: It is the same for young people in all places but with different stuff. I have my family there, my friends there, I have a girlfriend, I have a bike. I like the weather and some other things and there are some things I don’t like. Living in Cuba is like living everywhere. DP: Do you enjoy being away from Cuba? GC: I enjoy touring a lot and in England I have a lot of friends. It is always good to have a different view of yourself from outside. DP: You have choreographed with DCC, would you see yourself choreographing with companies in the UK? GC: I am a free person and I see myself everywhere. I can see myself wherever I have an idea and we can have a conversation and communication. And if someone is interested to work with me and those ideas then I can do that. I am Cuban because I was born there but that doesn’t mean that I can only work there. I could work anywhere I guess. DP: What is special about DCC? GC: Every part of the world has its own way

Hip hop titans looking for Throne coronation Superstars Jay-Z and Kanye West are bringing their critically acclaimed Watch The Throne tour to Europe, and they will be stopping at the LG Arena in Birmingham on Wednesday, June 13. of being. Being Cuban we have a lot of heat, sea, beach and a different way to see stuff. That makes us what we are. Maybe that is why we are really physical and, at the same time, conceptual. DP: How do you work when choreographing with DCC dancers? GC: When I was creating Mambo I was looking at the dancers and trying to see what they could give me, what they communicated to me and I use that. I have an idea but it is very global. I go there and then I do what I can with the dancers. Normally I break them – mentally and physically! That way it is easier to work with them. DP: You undertook a project in the UK? GC: About three years ago there was a project where one choreographer, Rafael Bonachela went to Cuba and me and another dancer from DCC came to the UK to make workshops. But we didn’t want to just do a workshop, we wanted to make sure the dancers could do something with it. It was fun. DP: A number of international companies are now visiting Cuba, how do you think this benefits dance in Cuba? GC: A lot of companies have come and different people like different things. Different people will choose to see different things in the theatres.

Still ‘Lost’ in music after all these years By Paul Castles Paradise Lost return to the Midlands this month with their distinctive doom metal delivery that has earned them a loyal band of diehard fans stretching back more than two decades. The northerners are at the Slade Rooms on Wednesday, April 25, supported by Finland’s finest dark destroyers Insomnium. The Black Country gig coincides with the release of Paradise Lost’s thirteenth album Tragic Idol which is a masterpiece of brooding intensity. The album, out on Century Media, was recorded in leafy Lincolnshire although frontman Nick Holmes spent a couple of weeks in Sweden laying down the vocals with producer Jens Bogren who has worked in the past with bands such as Opeth and Borknagar. “The new album really reflects the kind of music we were listening to in our teens,” explained Nick, during a chat with The Phoenix. “Tastes often go in circles and Tragic Idol has been influenced by some of the bands we were listening to many years ago such as Candlemass.” Although Paradise Lost have been making records on a fairly regular basis for more than 20 years, Tragic Idol sounds as fresh and furious as anything that’s gone before it. “We are all pleased with it,”

declared Nick. “Once we got the ball rolling the creative energy was there. Some of our fans at gigs thesedays are dads with their sons but we have always had a loyal fanbase.” The band will be back in the Midlands in August when they make an overdue return to the

Fahmida a real Force of nature

By Thaiba Ishtiaq

F

ahmida Begum is your average 22 year old British-Bangladeshi Muslim girl. She grew up in the Lozells district of Birmingham where she attended Holte School, leaving with a number of GCSE and BTEC qualifications. Like every other schoolgirl she imagined ‘growing up’ to be everything from an artist, to making a name for herself in the property market. However, a one-week residential with The Royal Queen Hussars at the age of 15 soon changed her outlook. “I initially went just to get a week away from home and school. But after that one week insight, I knew the military was the lifestyle I wanted to pursue.”

Interest

Being a Muslim from a fairly traditional Bangladeshi family, joining the military was a taboo subject and she was initially met with negative responses when she expressed her interest in signing up aged just 16. She complied with the wishes of her parents by attending college with a view to a nursing career. A military career was always on her mind after turning 18, she applied to the Royal Air Force. “My parents weren’t too pleased at first, as the job would require me moving away from home and the Muslim community as a whole are generally reluctant in allowing young unmarried daughters move away. “Luckily for me, my parents came round without too much difficulty.”

l

Fahmida Begum talks to Prime Minister David Cameron

The application, acceptance and training was demanding but Fahmida graduated after her 11week training programme. After six-months training to qualify as a medic, she was posted to an RAF Unit where she will remain over the next few years during which she will be deployed on an operational tour outside the UK. Currently assigned as a Senior Aircraft Woman (SAC), Fahmida’s role involves her undertaking medical administration, triaging trainees at the unit, dispensing medication, taking blood and giving vaccinations. Every five to six months she and her colleagues are moved around the medical centre to experience every department. She welcomes the diversity of the role and looks

forward to her deployment which will, as she describes, be “an even challenging role due to the variety of tasks”. Fahmida would like to see other Muslims in the Forces. She said: “I know more than anyone else how difficult it is being a Muslim and serving for the British Armed Forces but don’t let prejudice, opinionated people and fear hold you back. “The Royal Air Force provides me with all the support I need. They are supportive towards my religious needs and those of every other culture and are completely against discrimination and abuse.” Fahmida is a member of the ‘Armed Forces Muslim Association (AFMA)’ which provides support for servicemen and wom-

en of the Muslim faith. When asked what she would say by way of encouragement to the Asian and Muslim communities she replied: “what are you afraid of! people always tell me I’m doing such an extraordinary job but why aren’t you doing it for yourself?! Because you can do it! “The first hurdle is always the hardest; facing your family and your own fears but once you overcome it, everything else will seem so much easier. “As long as you stay passionate, focused and determined, you will succeed. No-one can bring you down for serving in the British Armed Forces” Fahmida is a shining example of what can be achieved through determination and a perfect model of what it takes to be ‘British’.

Gangs and guns cast a shadow

St. Thomas and St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), neighbouring islands of these British West Indian Virgin Islands, are two enchanting isles that have long been plagued by gangland violence. The gang culture, rooted in many parts of St. Thomas and St. Croix, claims scores of lives in the hellish crossfire. Recently, a dear daughter of these British Virgin Islands was gunned down in a gangland shooting on St. Thomas. And even before that, a Puerto Rican girl, on a cruise with her family, was tragically killed by a stray bullet while riding in a safari bus with her parents in the USVI Capital, Charlotte Amalie. Yes, the frequent sound of gunshots, followed by wailing women, and then sirens, are a norm in that lovely but tragic land: a very American type Modus Vivendi. This is a deadly US street cul-

Reggae star Tuff Lion

Lion king is made of Tuff stuff There aren’t enough superlatives to describe the accomplished singer/songwriter Tuff Lion. The multi-instrumentalist and producer has over 25 years of experience in reggae. As a bandleader and guitarist, the USbased roots reggae artist has at last brought his vocal and lyrical prowess to the forefront as he takes the stage as a lead vocalist. Tuff Lion’s single “Good Works”, on MT. Nebo Records has become an anthem of hope for those who are working to fulfill their life’s ambitions. In 2006, Tuff Lion received the DC Area Reggae Music award for Best Male Vocalist Records compilation Talking Roots II. His presence in contemporary roots reggae is ubiquitous as he has recorded, performed, produced, and toured with living legends like Apple Gabriel, the Itals, Junior Marvin, Fully Fullwood, the Abyssinians and Donovan Carless. Tuff Lion’s live presentation is well seasoned and experienced as he deftly moves around stage. In an instant, you can hear that his baritone voice is surprisingly mature and soothing. A voice than can easily modulate to a very fine and soulful falsetto with a breathtaking originality to his sound.

Dixon Igwe warns that the British Virgin Islands are not addressing the growing dangerous anti-social subculture in the neighbouring United States Virgin Islands

ture emanating from the black ghettos. Gangsta rap has become a major part of American subculture spawning a national brand and industry worth billions of dollars. This is money earned from a musicality promoting an antisocial and criminal lifestyle that is now a way of life for many young blacks. Whites buy into the music but do not take it on as a way of life, as many blacks appear to do. Attempts at combating this gang scourge in the USVI, and the apparent

limitations in doing just that, were recently highlighted in stories in the Virgin Islands Daily News. One spoke of USVI senators, and their determination that the proposed VI Street Gang Prevention Act, would unfairly target groups of young men. That the Act would “criminalise social activities, and lead to harassment and targeting of groups of young men,’’ which in this observer’s opinion was just another exercise in political obfuscation. Consequently, proposed and much

needed anti-gang legislation for the United States Virgin islands remains in deep freeze. It appears the political establishment in the USVI – like the US National Rifle Association, and even the US Supreme Court – is more concerned about notions of individual freedom and liberty, than a pandemic of death reigning in the black community. The violent street gang, and the gun culture in the USA are synonyms, and both feed off each other. The USVI example of dealing with the gangland paradigm is one where law enforcement appears to have their hands tied behind their backs. The criminal is thus given a free reign to carry out his illegal activities in the full knowledge that he cannot be apprehended by a law more concerned with individual liberties than communal safety.

Malachi McPherson reveals his top five Caribbean treasures

ith so much to do, see, hear, eat and drink in the Caribbean holidaymakers are spoilt for choice! With vibrant nightlife, natural attractions and an extremely rich culture, it’s easy to find variety in any vacation, on any island. Unfortunately I, haven’t visited every Caribbean island (yet!) but I’ve obtained personal recommendations for some great attractions that are well worth a visit. Here are a few suggestions: • Sulphur Springs – St. Lucia Now I’m going to start off a tad biased as St. Lucia, my mother’s homeland, is truly beautiful, arguably the best Caribbean destination of them all. Mountainous, scenic and largely unspoilt, the island holds scores of great natural attractions. My favorite is Sulphur Springs; the world’s only “drive-in” volcano. Cool huh? Arrive before dawn or during the evening and have a relaxing and soothing mud-bath at the Springs, said to afford excellent skin and health benefits! • Harrison’s Cave – Barbados This is as one of Barbados’ greatest treasures. Lying 700 feet above sea level, the caves are accessed by trams which travel through the tremendous open cavity. Truly a gem of the Caribbean, visitors can also walk along the trail in order to examine the amazing rock formations. Experienced tour guides will give you the lowdown and history of the cave; an opportunity to take some unbelievable snaps. As one of the ‘Seven Wonders of Bar-

l

Palm trees, sandy beaches and warm waters...welcome to Jamaica

bados’ the crystal and rock formations – opened in 1981 to the public – are one of the most popular attractions in Barbados. Visitors can go the extra mile by snorkeling in the cave’s underground tavern. • Grand Anse Beach – Grenada A lot of people think: Caribbean=Beaches. Undoubtedly not a bad thing, but of course we all know there’s much more to the beautiful region as my two previous destinations prove. Nonetheless, Grand Anse Beach gets an honorary mention! Often regarded as the best beach in the Caribbean (no small feat) the beach is two miles of unspoilt, crystal white sand. The fact that the beach is located on the Western side of the island affords it calm cool waters and shelter that make it a haven for scuba diving. Imperatively, there are a number of excellent restaurants and bars – kick your feet up with a local rum punch!

• Dunn’s River Falls – Jamaica A destination, which in the vein of the nature of its mother island Jamaica, ‘packs a punch’ so to speak. Among Caribbean islands, often Jamaica is the first island to be thought of. Dunn’s River Falls is one of the natural wonders. As a young boy I visited the Falls with my dad and remember the gushing water. Thousands of visitors make the pilgrimage to the falls each year. • Botanic Gardens – St. Vincent Located in Kingstown, St. Vincent’s Botanic gardens are one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Home to a variety of rare plant species, the gardens are a worthwhile visit for nature lovers. Occupying approximately 20 acres just outside of the nation’s capital, the Botanic Gardens are a prime location for relaxing, weddings, studying and taking awe-inspiring snaps!

It’s a wrap with

Anne-Marie Davy It’s with great pride, and endless admiration, that this month I introduce Barbara Makeda Blake Hannah. A Jamaican author, journalist, filmmaker and commentator on culture and entertainment, Barbara (pictured below) is also the Executive Director of the Jamaica Film Academy. She has lectured at universities throughout the world and was a delegate to the UN World Conference Against Racism in 2001. But I wanted to know what such a remarkable woman would have to say about herself? Barbara replied: “First of all I am a Rastawoman. I started on that journey in 1972 and am still trotting. I have worked in Jamaica and England and for the past four years I have organised an annual festival of films celebrating reggae culture.” Barbara began wearing wraps in 1972 and continued off and on until 1980; she has consistently covered her hair since. When I see her headwraps and garments, I immediately make a correlation with her lifestyle, her experiences, her culture, her ‘religion’ and her womanhood. Surely I am not the only person that notices a beautiful or elaborate headwrap and immediately start to imagine what the wearer must be like? When I asked her why she wraps her hair she refers to a bible verse which notes that a woman’s hair is her glory and should remain covered when she prays. Ms Hannah said: “I overstand (understand in Rastafari culture) the modesty and humility in that, casting aside the vanity that we women usually attach to our hair and its styles, and instead covering that ‘glory’ just as modestly as we cover our bodies. “Rasta calls headwraps ‘crowns’, so we Rastawomen feel we earn the title of ‘Queen’ or ‘Empress’ that we are called when we wear our crowns. I would not be seen outside my house without my crown, I would not be properly dressed. “Look at the world and you will see women in African, Asian, Indian cultures wearing head-coverings when a girl becomes a woman. By the way, you notice that the Queen of England doesn’t go out without a head-covering? If she doesn’t wear a hat or scarf, she wears a real crown!”

Sandwell looks the business

Sandwell Council Leader Darren Cooper is delighted his borough has a higher than average start up rate for new businesses. A recent survey has also shown that Sandwell is an ideal place to start a manufacturing business due to its location and skill base. Many firms are expanding despite a survey that has showed the borough is one of the worst places in the UK for insolvencies. Councillor Cooper said: “Sandwell is full of hard-working and honest people, but they are being let down by the Government. Its ecomomic policies are failing. “This survey is proof beyond doubt that it is these genuine people who are the ones who who are being hit the hardest. “They are losing their jobs, cannot afford to pay their mortgages and are in danger of losing their homes. It is terrible.” Councillor Cooper said that was why the council announced that it was embarking on a new affordable house-building programme in a bid to help people who are struggling.”

Free to join, Virgin Media Pioneers is an online community that connects young entrepreneurial talent to a network of peer-to-peer support, video blogs, engaging TV series and expert professional mentoring and advice. With over 600 members from the region already part of this digital community, Birmingham City Council through Digital Birmingham will promote Virgin Media Pioneers to those with the creativity and drive to start a company. By making the most of the digital world in order to build better businesses, Digital Birmingham aims to unlock the talent, ambition and ideas of young people in the West Midlands, helping sup-

port the next generation of entrepreneurs. Cllr Paul Tilsley, Deputy Leader, Birmingham City Council and Chair of the Digital Birmingham Partnership, said: “Young people have been amongst those hardest hit during the recession with more than a quarter without a job. “Providing local people with the opportunity to develop new skills and increase their IT capabilities is a great way for us to invest in our area, create jobs and grow our economy at a crucial time. “Many have great business ideas but don’t know how to make them a reality. “If Birmingham is going to generate the next Richard Branson, then we need to encourage initiatives like Virgin Media Pioneers that provide young people with access to the contacts, advice and support they need to unlock their entrepreneurial talent,” he added.

BUSINESS

Theo Paphitis took time out from the opening of his new Bullring store to talk undies, business and the state of the nation’s youth with Phoenix editor Paul Castles

T

heo Paphitis probably knows more about ladies lingerie than your average man-about-town. But then as boss of the rapidly expanding Boux Avenue empire the Cypriot-born entrepreneur has legitimate reasons for knowing his D Cups from his tea cups. Theo is no stranger to the delights of lingerie having launched the hugely successful La Senza chain back in 1990. He sold it on in 2006 for a £100 million and was saddened to see its recent demise in the hands of the new owners. It clearly hasn’t put him off the idea of running a chain of lingerie shops although he accepts his brand new Bullring store has opened against a backdrop of testing economic times. “These are hugely tough economic times,” agreed Theo, “and if I was just going to open a store for 24 or 36 months I wouldn’t be doing it but our strategy is very much a long term one. “It’s very exciting to be in the Bullring and it was always in our first 10 places to be from day one. “The Bullring is actually Boux Avenue’s ninth store so we just creeped in. It was a really a case of just waiting for the right place to become available..

Successful

“It has to be the right concept for us but we are now rolling out stores across the country.” And despite the recent La Senza closures Theo remains certian the need fort stylish lingerie on the high street remains. “I got La Senza to where it was in the first place. It was very much my baby and it’s incredibly sad to see what has happened. “There was no reason for it to go that way but unfortunately it was let down by the people at the top.” Much like Alan Sugar, Theo, who is also the man behind the throne of Rymans stationers is thesedays known to most people through his media work and in particular on the hugely successful Dragons Den from which he has just finished recording the latest series. As one of the fire-breathing Dragons, Theo has to take a view on enterprising ventures put forward by a band of wouldbe self-starters. Occasionally, the more inspired ideas will meet with a Dragons approval although invariably there are more tears of sorrow than success. Theo is passionate about business and keen for the next generation to make their way in the world with purpose. Like many of his generation the ‘world owes me a living’ mantra of some young people does not sit easily with him. “This is my third recession in business. But if you think back to 1989/90 people

who were 10 or so then have only really ever seen wonderful economic growth up until now. We are living with what I call an an ‘entitlement mentality’.Every year people think they are entitled to a pay rise, enti-

tled to a better home, entitled to a better car and with less working hours. Well, surprise surprise you’re not! “There’s a whole generation out there growing up in the most blessed economic

times of the millennium. so it’s very strange therefore that actually one doesnt follow the other.” And for anyone reading this hoping to make it big, Theo offers these sensible words of advice. “There are opportunities out there for people to grow a business but you need to be realistic, work hard and work smart. “Working ‘smart’ is the key. You have to do your homework. There is no excuse. There is so much information out there. You can market on the web and on twitter. Boux Avenue’s Bullring launch coincided with Sport Relief weekend and through his own charitable trust the former chairman of Millwall Football Club is never slow to support good causes. “I do take pride in what the Trust does. It is an opportunity for people to give something back. The staff at Rymans have raised around £400,000 for Sport Relief. I’m incredibly proud of what those guys do and I’m just a small cog in that.”

Nasir Awan, president of the IAB, said: “It is time for the IAB and all Birmingham’s diverse communities to step up and support an elected mayor for Birmingham. “The Institute of Asian Businesses was founded to create the best environment for Asian companies. This mission has not changed and it is our view that an elected mayor of Birmingham is the way forward,” he said. “This is a positive move bringing

the city into line with other major cities of the world where the mayor who is publicly elected works hard to promote the city nationally and internationally. “Along with other benefits this would bring business and investment opportunities into the city benefitting the whole business community.” Joining its sister organisation the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, the IAB argues that the rec-

ognition, profile and democratic accountability of a mayor for Birmingham will deliver a better deal for Asian businesses and is urging its membership to vote yes. The elected mayor campaign will culminate at the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce annual dinner on April 25. If the answer is yes, an election will take place on November 15 – the same day as an election for a city police commissioner.

Work has finished on a £2.2 million housing scheme at Cape Hill in Smethwick. Fifteen two-bedroom apartments have been built on the site of former Victorian terraced houses at the junction of Raglan Road and Durban Road. The project has been built by contractors E Manton’s and is part funded by the Homes and Communities Agency. The building is designed as two wings of differing heights – two and three storeys. The scheme has been designed to achieve level four in the Code for Sustainable Homes and achieve Building for Life Silver Standard. It also meets ‘green’ home building standards by harvesting rainfall and using solar panels to supply electricity, which will help reduce fuel bills for the tenants. Tenants are now moving into the new council homes and they will be managed by Sandwell Homes on behalf of the council. Sandwell Council Leader Darren Cooper said: “Residents were not the only ones to feel the benefit of the project as contractors E Manton’s took on three local apprentices and a work experience placement. “They were able to work on the development through Sandwell Council’s Think Local Construction scheme and gained invaluable experience during the project.”

Town fears

IAB backing call for Brum mayor An elected mayor for Birmingham will deliver a better deal for Asian businesses, says the largest business organisation representing Asian companies. The Institute of Asian Businesses’ (IAB) president and executive committee are unanimously in favour of the introduction of an elected mayor and are urging member businesses to make sure they are registered to vote ahead of the referendum on May 3.

Verdict, the independent retail analysts, forecasts that town centres will continue to struggle as spend is diverted to online and out-of-town. Carly Syme, Senior Retail Analyst at Verdict said: “Town centres have continued to decline despite experiencing higher levels of inflation. “Those who are expanding are going out-of-town, where rent is lower and larger units are available, allowing for deeper and wider ranges.”

Green light for car share Birmingham is to become the UK centre for trials of new car sharing schemes which allow motorists to collect and ‘drop off’ vehicles when and where needed throughout the city. The news comes as the City Council announced it has entered into agreement with specialist car share supplier, car2go, to pilot a scheme which will allow motorists to rent vehicles for short trips within the city, without being tied to a limited number of pick-up or drop-off points. This project will build upon a scheme already being trialled in the city with car share supplier City Car Club, who provide vehicles to the public for short term rental from and to specified popular locations. Cllr Timothy Huxtable, Cabinet Member for Transport, Environment and Regeneration, said: “Birmingham is committed to developing a wide range of green and public transport initiatives to reduce both traffic congestion and carbon emissions within the city, and then country at large.

Developed

“Through these projects we are keen to explore the potential that short term car share schemes may have, alongside improvements to public transport and walking/ cycling links, in removing the traditional reliance on bringing cars into the city everyday.” The car2go pilot is set to begin in the autumn, providing car2go members with access to a fleet of up to 250 two-seater smart fortwo “car2go edition” vehicles. The cars are specially developed for carsharing and can be rented spontaneously inside an operating area of around 50 square kilometres of the city. “We are proud to be chosen to build up Birmingham’s first fully-flexible carsharing service,” said Robert Henrich, CEO of car2go.

Janet standing up for black business

A

forum aimed at supporting and promoting black businesses has appointed a new chair to drive forward the group’s ambitions. Wolverhampton’s Black Business Network has elected Janet Smith of JS Associates as Chair and Sam Duru of SCA Management Consulting as Vice Chair. Its main aim is to promote the interests of black businesses in Wolverhampton by giving them a collective voice and linking them to various business opportunities such as procurement and tendering opportunities across the City. The network aims to identify the barriers and examine the experiences of black businesses and help them remove barriers to doing business which face them. Wolverhampton City Council’s Economic Development Team is working with the Wolverhampton Black Business Network and will be hosting a series of Workshops to bring black business owners together; it will be these businesses along with the Private Sector Chair and steering group that will drive the network.

Pride

The newly-formed Wolverhampton Black Business Network has now elected a full Board comprising of business owners. Councillor Peter Bilson, Wolverhampton’s city Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration and Prosperity, said: “The Black Business Network now has the structures in place to develop its action plan and move forward on priorities identified by black businesses within the city. “As a council we have taken steps to improve our engagement with all Wolverhampton’s business communities,” he added. Janet Smith said: “Wolverhampton Black Business Network provides opportunities for greater collaboration and partnerships between Black Businesses and other key stakeholders across the city of Wolver-

Coventry take new steps towards £300m revamp

The outline planning application for the £300 million plan to redevelop Coventry city centre has been submitted to the city council’s planning department. The submission of the thousand page document which includes a design and access statement, environmental statement and parameters plan is another step towards the transformation of the city centre south area which covers Bull Yard, Shelton Square, City Arcade, Barracks Car Park and Hertford Street. The plans, seeking outline approval, include a new anchor store, a 1,200 space car park, cin-

ema complex, hotel, apartments, new and refurbished retail units of the right size to attract new shops and the reintegration of the market into the scheme.

Exciting

The plans also reflect the city’s heritage and were inspired by the 1950s Gibson plan – recreating the iconic cross layout and better connecting Market Way, Hertford Street, IKEA and the market. Cllr Linda Bigham, Cabinet Member for City Development said, “This is the beginning of one of the most exciting transformations our city has seen in 50 years – it is what people have been ask-

ing for and importantly it is a deliverable plan. “We promised that the outline plan would be submitted for approval in March and we have kept that promise. “This is a big step forward and one that makes it very real. We have always been clear that we wanted to come up with a solid plan, not a promise of something that a development partner could not deliver. “Our aim is to secure planning permission by the Autumn. That might seem like a long way off, but a plan of this size and scale takes time to look at.”

The Phoenix–April 2012

Businesses from across Coventry and Warwickshire have heard how the region is quite literally supporting the Olympics – and how they too could still benefit from London 2012. Around 50 businesses attended an event organised by the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the Local Enterprise Partnership where firms were given an insight on how to make the most of the Games.

IAB guests were able to witness first hand the thrills of the world’s fastest racket sport at the recent Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships at the NEC. The IAB has forged a solid partnership in the past three years with Badminton England, the organisation responsible for the sport in this country. Badminton itself is the second most popular participation sport in the UK after football, and the championships event at the NEC attracts a healthy following.

Excellent

The championships began in 1899, and these days are known as the ‘Wimbledon of badminton’. IAB president Nasir Awan said of this year’s lively event: “We are very pleased once again to work with the excellent team at Badminton England to promote this international competition, and the family sport in general, to the both business community via the Chamber and the wider population in Birmingham.”

or anyone looking for a solicitor at an important or difficult time in their lives, it’s important to ensure that they offer excellent customer care to their clients. For John Wotton, President of the Law Society of England & Wales, he want to make sure that they offer the best possible service in providing legal advice. At the moment there is a confusing range of ‘legal service providers’ in the market, so it is essential to seek the services of a solicitor, as they provide a high level of financial protection and strong consumer guarantees, in the event

lation Authority to make sure that they deliver the best service to their clients. With some solicitors’ practices making sure that they stand out from the crowd by committing themselves to offering excellent standards of client care and business management, they are recognised for their achievement by the national Law Society by the award of a ‘Lexcel’ quality mark. Says Mr. Wotton: “All firms who receive the Lexcel accreditation undergo a robust application and assessment process. To maintain their Lexcel status they undergo an annual ‘health-check’ and on-site visits from Lexcel assessors to ensure that they are continuing to meet the high standards expected of Lexcel firms. “I want everyone to be in no doubt that using a solicitor will ensure a level of service and consumer protection that you will not be able to find anywhere else. Choosing a practice with the Lexcel quality mark will give you that extra reassurance.”

One of the firms represented at the event was Ryton-based Keller Foundations, which installed the foundations for the Olympic Stadium in London. Representatives of CompeteFor, the official portal for companies to tender for London 2012-related business contracts, also informed businesses about how they can still be involved in the Games. The event, at the Coventry University Innovation Village also featured talks from Olympian David Moorcroft and Coventry and Warwickshire LEP vice chair Cllr John Mutton.

Time to act over potholes

The Warranty Direct-owned campaign website, potholes. co.uk, is calling for councils to resurface pothole-ravaged roads and to scrap their patch and mend policy. The call comes as the annual ALARM (Annual Local Authority Road Maintenance) report reveals that there are 1.7million potholes in England and Wales and an 11-year backlog of road repairs. Potholes.co.uk revealed last year that British motorists shell out an average of over £1 million a day fixing suspension and axle damage caused by potholes and badly-maintained roads. Duncan McClure Fisher, of Warranty Direct, which set up potholes.co.uk, said: “It’s simply not acceptable for local authorities to patch-up roads that resemble the surface of the moon – they need to be resurfaced. “Councils need to be creative, enlisting local businesses and spending the money there is as wisely as possible, not wasting a penny on repairs which only last a matter of days sometimes.”

ATS boss in blast at budget

Any glimmer of hope that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, would offer British businesses and motorists relief from the soaring cost of petrol and diesel was quashed during the recent Budget. Ian Stuart, Group Managing Director of Birmingham-based ATS Euromaster, the UK’s largest comprehensive tyre specialist, said: “The budget was a golden opportunity for the Chancellor to reach out to British business by scrapping the planned fuel duty increase.

Heart

“The Government could have used the additional tax generated by record fuel prices to offset the planned rise in duty. “Instead, their decision strikes a bitter blow right into the heart of the economy. “When will the Chancellor realise that the country cannot get back on its feet if the cost of fuel is continually dragging businesses and motorists back down?” ATS Euromaster offers free tyre pressure checks at any of its 370 fast-fit centres nationwide.

Tyre warning for caravan owners

l

Caravan owners need to take extra care with tyres, both on the car and caravan

With a spate of Bank Holidays on the horizon, TyreSafe is advising caravan owners to give their tyres a full ‘health check’ to avoid possible motoring misery. While tyre safety is important for all vehicles, caravan tyres, and those on trailer tents or motorhomes, which might have been left to stand outside over the winter and are not used that often, are especially at risk from rubber degradation. This is because harmful UV rays can penetrate tyres, attacking the rubber ingredients that give resilience and flexibility. The result, particularly for under-inflated tyres, can be a terrify-

ing high speed blow-out. Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe, explains: “Exposure to the elements for long periods without movement can be a real cause of rubber damage to caravan tyres, often seen by cracking or a drop in pressure. “It’s vital to ensure that the tyres are properly inspected before use and correctly maintained.” Any sign of cracking should result in the motorist seeking professional advice or replacing the tyre. l TyreSafe has a dedicated caravan tyre section on its website, www.tyresafe.org, which is full of important tyre safety advice, information and tips.

India puts cricket first Cricket, tennis and football are the top three most followed sports in India, according to new research. The report by SMG Insight/ YouGov asked people what sports and events they follow and participate in on a regular basis. Unsurprisingly, cricket led the way with the majority of respondents following and/ or playing on a regular basis. Of those quizzed 85% watch cricket on TV or in the media at least once a week and 62% play cricket at least four times a year

The grants come from Sport England’s ‘Inspired Facilities’ programme which invests in sports facilities for the benefit of future generations. Spencer Lamb of Warley Rugby Club said: “This is a massive boost for both the club and the local community. “We’ve been desperate to upgrade our training facilities and changing rooms for many years and this £50,000 grant will mean we can modernise and welcome even more new members. “We listened carefully to the voices and opinions of local people to learn more about what they want from the club and I know they’ll be delighted with the improvements.” Jessica Gripton from Old Hill Tennis club said: “We’ve been awarded £35,000 to improve parking, fencing, lighting and steps at the club – we couldn’t believe it when we were told our application had been successful. “The improvements will make a massive difference and will undoubtedly help us attract more members. ewly crowned World Indoor 4x400m relay champions Shana Cox, Christine Ohuruogu, Nicola Sanders and Perri Shakes-Drayton, have turned their attention to preparing for their trials battle at the Aviva Trials in Birmingham in June. The quartet took gold in Istanbul, having never medalled at the world indoors previously, and relay places will be a rare commodity as the team will seek to add to its previous two Olympic podium places winning bronze in 1980 and 1992. Perri Shakes-Drayton knows that this year’s event will be tough with only two automatic qualification spots available in each discipline.

Drama

“Everyone’s going to be trying to step up their game for the Aviva 2012 Trials. We’re all going for those Olympic places, so it’s not going to be easy. “You have got to treat it like a Championship. You are going against the best in your country so everyone is going to be on their A-game. I’m sure it will be electric.” Even with Shakes-Drayton likely to prepare over her key event - the 400m hurdles, Shana Cox, who won the 400m at the
