Brush strokes tackle malaria

Sir Albert Bore was ushered back into power in Birmingham as Labour swept back into the city council hot-seat at the recent local election. “It shows the Conservatives have lost the confidence of their own voters. If Labour can win a seat in true blue Sutton Coldfield we can win anywhere,” said Sir Albert. The Labour leader announced that he would get to work delivering on election pledges of job creation, more housing and improving the city’s most deprived wards.

Future

“The transformation of the city due to the re-generation is one of my proudest achievements,” he said. “Birmingham has become a great place in which to live and work, but we have to look to the future and how we move this city on.” Sir Albert last led the city council in 2004 and so is returning to the seat of power after an eight-year gap. Sir Albert, who was knight-

This city is built on its diversity, so we have to do much more for the young. “The result has gone beyond our expectations. We won seats we have never won before. “The voters have undoubtedly delivered a damning verdict on this Tory-Lib Dem Coalition.” Labour secured more than half the votes across the city ending up with with 77 seats, the Tories took 28 and Lib Dems 15.

rt 4 Action – an initiative devised by ‘Faiths Act’ fellows Immy Kaur and Steve Hirst as part of a global effort to reduce and eradicate malaria – was officially launched at the MAC in Birmingham. The campaign took the form of a city-wide art competition, and was an opportunity for the

diverse population of the West Midlands to express their views on global issues through artistic creativity. “There is a common misconception that young people don’t care what happens in the rest of the world” said Steve. “Art 4 Action is a way to show they do.” Funded by ‘Near Neighbours’ – a community fund available to

those organising events to promote community cohesion – Art 4 Action was able to get its message out to 2,500 people. Faiths Act is a global charity focussing on malaria. Funds raised from Art 4 Action however, will go towards their project in Sierra Leone, where a child under five dies every 60 seconds due to lack of resources.

Frank Stewart

BBC gospel legend will be missed Tributes were paid to one of the pioneers of gospel music in the Midlands recently. Frank Stewart, a leading icon and role model on the gospel scene, hosted ‘Frank Stewart’s Gospel Hour’ on BBC Radio WM for over 10 years. Prior to that, he formed part of the ‘Singing Stewarts’, a unique gospel group combining traditional gospel music with a Trinidadian calypso flavour. The Singing Stewarts performed throughout the Midlands and all over Europe too. Frank’s career with the BBC took off after he became a hit with the listeners during a fiveminute interview spot. The Gospel Hour was the first show on the BBC dedicated to gospel music and in particular the Christian affairs of those from a Caribbean background. His popularity on the show gained him the title of initiating the longest running gospel music show on BBC Radio.

Speaking at events like PRIDE is testament to her belief that no issue should be taboo in any community. “We should be able to talk about any issue openly. The ‘Munshidaat’ are a muslim women’s singing group who have come together to revive the love of Islam through singing praises. The event was jampacked with activities, including performances by the singing group, a bouncy castle, stalls selling everything from food to bespoke canvasses and accessories, penalty shootout and much more! An auction of rare relics took place with a 130-year-old book under the hammer for £500! All of the proceeds were donat-

The charity was founded in 2010 to address the devastation of the floods in Pakistan. All funds raised are distributed on the ground to the needy. The fundraiser was a first for the Munshidaats, who were overwhelmed with the response with more than £5000 raised. “I am so thankful to everyone who attended,” said organiser Haleema Khan. “This is the first event we have organised, and it’s been great! “We will definitely be doing something like this again.”

Violinists required at Public Sandwell string musicians are being invited to join a newlyformed orchestra – The People’s Orchestra. The orchestra is an initiative of The Change Consortium, a community company based at The Public in West Bromwich. The ensemble was launched in March, but is on the look out for more string players. Initial auditions are well under way and musical director Andy Sandham said: “We are really pleased with standard of the players we have attracted, but we are sadly lacking musicians playing violins and violas.”

Big Band to hit the high notes l

Members of The Notebenders Big Band are now enjoying making music at their new home of Ladywood Community Centre in Birmingham

A

fter some worrying and tense moments The Notebenders Big Band have found a new home at Ladywood Community Centre. Managed by the Andy Hamilton Trust (AHT), the Notebenders are a diverse community Big Band, inspired by Ladywood’s own legendary Andy Hamilton, OBE. Having practiced every Friday without fail at Ladywood Arts and Leisure Centre, the Notebenders were given their marching orders to vacate the building at the end of March. Finding a large space to hold at least 20 musicians and storage space was fraught with difficulty. “It was extremely difficult to

find somewhere that had all the facilities required,” said Bindi Kalsi, Chair of the AHT. “There were a number of boxes to tick for example, a large room with storage facilities for all our equipment, ample but safe parking, well lit areas, access to equipment for performances and importantly a central location.” Searching across the City, the band did find a place closer to home at the Community Centres. The Trust was formed in January 2000 as a community constituted body and its aims are to ‘fulfil every aspiring musicians potential’. Andy’s students had been meeting regularly to practice and as word got around more and more

Airport chiefs looking to get China in their hands Claims by BAA that Heathrow Airport is the only answer to forging new air links with China have been further dismissed by Birmingham Airport following a successful visit to the Far East for talks with a number of airlines. During a three-day visit to the Chinese city of Chengdu for the Routes Asia conference, the Airport’s management team, led by its CEO,

Paul Kehoe, spoke to airlines about the market potential, particularly highlighting the level of trade between this region and cities across Asia and the demand for direct flights. Paul Kehoe, the Airport’s CEO, said: “We hear so much from BAA about the UK losing lucrative new routes because of the capacity constraints at Heathrow but the South East isn’t the only solution.”

people started turning up to the group practices. Andy introduced Maurice Williams an American trombone player to the group and the music started rolling with regular practice at Rabano’s. Maurice with his broad shoulders, and even bigger voice and laugh honed the band member’s reading score sheets and playing skills. Not longer afterwards the band was playing at carnivals, charity events, including the opening of the refurbished Handsworth Park.

Diverse

During the band’s stretch at Ladywood Arts and Leisure Centre, they produced their first CD. Interestingly, all the recordings, artwork, pre and post recording was completed in-house by its own members that form the backbone of the Notebenders. Representing the diverse communities of Birmingham, members come in all shapes, sizes and communities. Access is open to anyone who wants to play and perform as individuals and in a Big Band. Notebenders are a true reflection of the diverse communities of Britain. Providing musical tuition and opportunities to anyone able to play an instrument, sing and support its activities the bands doors are always open. l To book Notebenders or find out more information visit www.notebenders.org or telephone Bindi on 07544 184455.

He added: “We have been approached by a violinist from India, but that is just a little bit too far!” Mr Sandham said The People’s Orchestra was all about passion, excellence and enjoyment. The repertoire will be orchestral, but will include modern music with film scores like Pirates of the Caribbean. l For more information, visit www.thepeoplesorchestra.com

Not only does the likeable exercise whirlwind take his popular pilates classes at health centres across the West Midlands, but he actually composes the music that has his followers working up a sweat with a smile on their face. Such is his growing reputation on the health and fitness circuit that Leroy was successfully nominated as a torchbearer for London 2012. Leroy is an interesting character who first started to adopt a healthy lifestyle and philosophy as a teenage boxer where he had a number of fights when training at Ladywood ABC in Birmingham. But while he showed plenty of talent in the ring his destiny took a change of direction when he started to excel as a dancer. After winning a prestigious competition Leroy spent a few years working as a dancer in Germany where he featured on magazine covers and TV shows. Jamaica is hot property this year with the nation celebrating its 50th anniversary of independence, Usain Bolt heading an awesome squad of athletes to the London Olympics and a new blockbuster movie on reggae icon Bob Marley. The city of Birmingham is getting in on the action by staging what promises to be a marvelous 10-day festival between August 2-12 designed to celebrate all things Jamaican. Jamaica in the Square is being hosted by Birmingham City Council – in partnership with Firm (Security) Services Ltd – in Victoria Square. The extravaganza will be a salute to the best of Jamaican culture embracing live music, food, fashion shows, dance, sport and business. “The objectives are to celebrate Jamaica’s 50th anniversary and participation in the London Olympic Games, during which the Jamaican team will be based in Birmingham,” said a spokesperson. “We will be showcasing Jamaica in a true light, its history past present and future. “We aim to show everything Jamaica has contributed to the world and prove that there is so much more to the country than just a holiday resort. “Jamaica in the Square will also help break down some of the negative barriers in the UK. “First and foremost it’s a 10-day festival but we want to use it as the start of a new economic platform, in particular to help Jamaica to climb out of poverty.

“It has one of the world’s highest rates of unemployment.” The thousands of people passing through Victoria Square in August won’t fail to hear the Jamaican reggae beat while their taste buds will be sent into overdrive once the aroma of jerk chicken and curried goat filter through the air. “Jamaica has a proud heritage and community, embracing many different races,” said the spokesperson. “We will try to show how communities can promote the Jamaica brand, enhancing that.” And while people often talk of a legacy with regard the Olympics, organisers believes Jamaica in the Square will create a legacy too. “I hope it is seen as a long-term investment plan and a foundation for young people to climb on. There will be a whole range of benefits,” said the spokesperson. “We will be encouraging local businesses and people from the community to get involved. The priority is to change people’s perception of Jamaica and bring out the true beauty of the country.” l For more information on Jamaica in the Square contact info@firmservices.co.uk

Since 2007, after recognising the often prohibitive costs of specialised equipment, training and travel, Variety has been providing disability sports wheelchairs and equipment to young people eager to participate in disability sport. Through an additional partnership with SportsAid, Variety also provides extra grants to support some of the most promising young, disabled athletes in the UK, including Jack and Amy. Both athletes are hoping to soon fulfill their dreams of being named part of Team GB for the

Sam was thrilled to get the invitation to take charge of the field of play for weightlifting events at London 2012. He said: “This is a huge privilege and means the eyes of the world will be on me and my team of volunteers during all the weightlifting events. “I will be very proud to be representing Sandwell on a worldwide stage.” Sam, aged 49, is a genuine homegrown Sandwell sporting star who was born and bred in Smethwick and is now employed

by Oldbury Academy, where he runs a gym for the school. He added: “I’d like to thank John Martin, the head at Oldbury Academy, and the school governors for their full support. “My call-up has really got all the students and staff at the school excited.

Paralympic Games 2012. Despite only beginning training in 2008, partially sighted 18-year-old Jack is ranked as the fastest in the world for his age and category. He competes in the 100m, 200m and Long Jump. At 16, Amy is ranked in her category as the British No.1 in 100 metres, 200 metres and Discus.

Honoured

Matt was first introduced to Variety, the Children’s Charity, after a serious rugby injury just after his 17th birthday left him paralysed from the neck down. He later went back to his studies, achieving a degree in law and now works as a lawyer. Duncan Goodhew said, “I was honoured when I was asked to be here and lend my support to Matt, Jack and Amy, as they continue their dreams of participating in the London Paralympic Games.”

Funding offer to host own Olympics With the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games getting closer by the day, the Black Country BeActive Partnership is launching round three of its New Events Fund (NEF) to support communities in running their very own Community Games. Community Games is part of the West Midlands London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, and provides a great opportunity for people to bring their community together to take part in sporting and cultural activities inspired by, and in celebration of, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Experience

“I’m looking forward to telling everyone at the Academy and in Sandwell about this once-in-alifetime experience,” added Sam. Sam represented Great Britain in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games in 1986 and 1990 and has gone on to coach national youth teams.

Fostering in window at fun day

F

ostering Fiesta are staging a special family fun day in Birmingham to help encourage more people to think seriously about becoming foster carers. Among the many organisations supporting the event are Birmingham City and Aston Villa football clubs, both of whom sent their respective club mascots along to the special launch event. ‘Family Fun For All’ takes place at Cannon Hill Park and the Mac on Saturday, May 12 from midday through to 6pm and is free to attend. Free Radio will be hosting what promises to be a spectacular show with music and dance events for the whole family to enjoy. Birmingham City and Aston Villa

will be lending their support and there will be a wide variety of arts and crafts workshops and performances for people to enjoy. Among the many activities taking place will be capoeira, zumba, poetry, street dance, Irish dancing, African Caribbean dance and South Asian Dance. There will also be children’s rides and plenty of other entertainment – including a special guest spot from X-Factor finalists The Risk – so why not pop along and be sure to visit the Fostering Fiesta Information tent to find out about more about becoming a foster carer with Birmingham City Council.

l Launching Fostering Fiesta are (from left to right) Villa mascot Hercules, Michelle Simmonds-Nutt (Villa Marketing), Michelle Smith (MAC), foster carer David Gibbs, singer Ruby Turner, Rachel Williams (Birmingham City Communications), Lynette Adjei (Adoption & Fostering Recruitment at City Council) and Blues mascots Beau & Belle. Sandwell supports Fostering Fortnight Sandwell Council’s Family Placement team is backing the national Fostering Fortnight campaign to highlight the need for more foster carers to come forward. In Sandwell, just like the country as a whole, there is an urgent need to find new foster carers as Rachel Gillott, the Family Placement team manger explains. “We are really lucky to have a lot of excellent foster carers in Sandwell, but unfortunately there is a constant need for new carers,” she said. It’s a point that is also being made nationally by the Fostering Network as a child comes into care and needs a foster family every 22 minutes across the United Kingdom.

Practical

In Sandwell the Family Placement team are always on the look out for new foster carers and just like the children they will look after, foster carers come from all sorts of backgrounds and circumstances. “Sometimes people just don’t realise what they have to offer,” Rachel explains. “For example it may only be practical for you to offer a home to a looked after child at weekends or during the holiday season, because of work or your own family circumstances. “But, if you can offer ‘respite caring’ – short-term arrangements to give carers a break – that can be a massive help to us, as well

l Fostering can be a rewarding experience as being a rewarding experience for you.” This is just one of the ways that fostering can work around individual situations. In Sandwell there is already a busy team of foster carers, sometimes turning fostering into their main job, while others carry on with an existing career. Whatever the situation, foster carers in Sandwell go through a detailed programme of training before they become a foster carer and can continue that training to

whatever level they chose as a foster carer with Sandwell Council. l To find out more about becoming a Foster carer with Sandwell Council you can call the Family Placement team on 0800 358 0899 or click on www. sandwell.gov.uk/adoptandfoster or visit the team in person at the next Fostering Information open day at Crystal House, Crystal Drive, Smethwick, B676 1QG between 3pm and 8pm on Tuesday, May 29.

BBC in new help on Bard Young people can ‘unlock’ Shakespeare via new online resources as part of their studies thanks to a new series of short films created by BBC Learning and the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). These films, produced as part of the BBC’s Shakespeare season and the World Shakespeare Festival bring Shakespeare to life for a secondary school audience. They provide students and teachers with a unique insight into Shakespeare’s work through world-class theatre productions and workshops with actors and directors. Students will be able to “unlock” key scenes from RSC theatre productions of three of Shakespeare’s most widely studied and performed plays – Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. By visiting the portal at www. bbc.co.uk/shakespeare they will be able to click through to explore three pivotal scenes from each play, each containing significant moments for character and plot development.

ork to build a new state-of-the-art school academy is nearing completion. The South Wolverhampton and Bilston Academy is being built as part of the Council’s Building Schools for the Future programme, which is transforming education for secondary age students in the city. The new building, which is currently taking shape at the Prosser Street campus, is a four storey building, known locally as the ‘jenga’ box, because of its shape and the wooden facades used. The new building will accommodate four skills/ learning zones, an engineering hub, lecture theatre, super labs, drama and music space, a café and a selection of standard classrooms. Not only will students benefit from a full-size multi-purpose Astro Turf hockey and football

pitch, they will also be able to use the swimming pool and other facilities at the recently opened Bert Williams Leisure Centre. The new build will be open to staff and students from September 2012. Students currently studying at the Wolverhampton Road site will benefit from free transport to and from the new Academy building. This will allow for a seamless transition into the new facility and ensure that they will benefit from the outstanding learning experiences that the new building will have to offer. The Academy is already working towards ambitious plans to prepare staff to deliver in their transformed learning spaces.

Fantastic

These include training staff to use interactive whiteboards and SMART technologies, changing teacher practice with the emphasis on Modern Foreign Languages and purchasing different resources to test suitability for the new curriculum the Academy has to offer. Gerard Stone, Head of Service for School Development, said: “We are delighted with how this fantastic new Academy is taking shape. “A number of Members and officers have visited the site recently to view progress made on the new build at the Academy. “They can see for themselves how the spaces will be transformed to engage and inspire staff, students and the local community”

Fashion icon Zandra Rhodes supports students during their Cultural Olympiad project

Students are in the pink as Zandra drops in for a visit A new report has highlighted Coventry University’s involvement in the UK’s Olympic and Paralympic Games contribution. The report – entitled ‘Olympic and Paralympic Games: The impact of universities’ – demonstrates the diverse contribution that universities are making to the 2012 Games. It also spotlights the overall impact on the UK sports industry and the work institu-

tions and academics are doing around the Cultural Olympiad and 2012 legacy programme. Coventry University students’ role in the ‘Godiva Awakes’ project is highlighted in the report as a good example of a higher education institution working with local companies to become a key part of the Cultural Olympiad. A team of fashion undergraduates teamed up with renowned style icon Zandra Rhodes and

local arts company Imagineer Productions to create a contemporary-style medieval gown and gold, hand-painted godets for a 10-metre tall puppet of Lady Godiva as part of the project. The Godiva Awakes initiative – which is led by Imagineer Productions – will see the giant puppet ‘awake’ in Coventry city centre in July to a spectacular performance involving dancers, aerialists, musicians and pyrotechnicians.

ore than 50 dedicated volunteers from all over the West Midlands joined forces recently to orchestrate one of the largest ever fundraising events in Birmingham. The ‘Evening of Inspiration’ series of concerts was part of the international charity, Islamic Relief’s efforts to raise funds for orphans and needy children worldwide. Travelling nationwide to Bradford, Cardiff, Manchester and London, ‘Evening of Inspiration’ made its stop at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham to an audience of more than 1,500 people. “Birmingham is the home of Islamic Relief,” announced Islamic Relief’s UK Director, Jehangir Malik. “This is where it all began and we are glad to be back.” The atmosphere was eclectic with amazing performances from some of the biggest names on the

Preacher Moss, the American comedian and writer, kept the crowd entertained inbetween performances with an array of stand up comedy. With all the smiles and laughter, there was no doubt that the event

was thoroughly enjoyed by all those present. The true reason behind the event was also highlighted. With a West Africa crisis imminent, Islamic Relief’s ‘One Safe Village Campaign’ aims to get as many funds out to the needy as possible. The Birmingham campaign was led by the head of the West Midlands fundraising body, Zeshaan

Ali. Committed and driven, he and his team raised an impressive £134,578,71! A total of over £630,000 was collated over the entire ‘Evening of Inspiration’ tour. Zeshaan fittingly maintains “without the selfless commitment of our volunteers, we would never have been able to achieve what we have.” Presented with ‘the world’s most ‘big timest fundraiser’ award, Zeshaan was grinning from ear to ear to realise that Birmingham had raised the second greatest amount of money on the tour. His team of volunteers joined him on stage to celebrate the well earned achievement. “I personally have been volunteering for Islamic Relief for the best part of four years” he said. “In this time I felt that I may have seen it all, yet the ‘Evening of Inspiration’ brought out a sense of commitment, passion and hard work which I had not seen before.

Staggering

“Before the event, during and after the event, the volunteers were magnificent.” Led by Zeshaan Ali, the group of volunteers and the generous people of Birmingham raised a staggering £134k, an incredible amount, which made every ounce of effort worthwhile. “Another great step in the right direction from Islamic Relief, another great effort by the volunteers,” said volunteer Adil Riaz. Coming from all walks of life, different cultures and backgrounds, volunteers give up their personal time to arrange, not only events such as ‘Evening of Inspiration’, but also fundraising dinners and community fairs. Without them, Islamic Relief West Midlands would not have been able to present Birmingham with such a fantastic event!

HEALTH

Health and fitness tips brought to you by MA3K Fitness owners Carlos (right) and Russell (left)

Bytesize health and fitness advice made simple 1 – To start off your health and fitness regime, you can stair walk – up and down your stairs a few times – to check how quickly you get out of breath to help gauge your level of fitness at a very basic level. If you feel that you are getting out of breath quickly after just a few climbs then you may want to try taking up brisk walking to build up your cardio rather than running. 2 – To gauge your upper body strength levels (especially for females) – you can see how many pressups you can perform within 60 seconds. If you feel that you have a strong core and upper body you can perform a full push-up. If you feel that your core and upper body is weak, then perform the push-up on your hands and knees. If this still proves to be over-challenging then some can try performing push-ups vertically off a wall. 3 – To start off your daily workout with a warm-up – a good overall exercise is skipping – which is good and beneficial for building stamina, endurance, agility speed, hand-eye/hand-feet coordination and generally improving rhythm timing and motor skills.

Bytesize nutritional advice made simple 1 – Cut down on junk (sugary foods, foods high in simple carbs or foods with monosodium glutamen and aspartame (poisons in foods), intake and increase – more healthier diets, white meats, balanced diets, water intake , fruit ‘n’ veg. 2 – Breakfast is the most important meal of the day – slow release energy, a bowl of oats and some fruit maybe a banana.

Walking is a step in right direction towards fitness Keep fit and Trim with Kim Kim Kardashian is in the UK this month to launched her new weight management product. And customers who buy any QuickTrim product will be in with a chance of meeting Kim at the VIP event in London. Kim Kardashian’s QuickTrim Essentials Kit is a seven-day programme that starts with a two-day cleanse followed by five days of meal replacement shakes to aid weight loss. QuickTrim was first launched in America in September 2009 and is the leading weight loss brand in the US currently sold through 60,000 outlets. QuickTrim was released in Australia during 2011 and in April 2012 it will be launched in the UK exclusively through Rowlands Pharmacy and at www.quicktrim.eu.

Decrease

Kim said: “I like to stay in shape but like most women I don’t find it easy. Rather than completely deny myself the things I like, I practice moderation, eating a well balanced diet and exercising regularly. “I’ve put my name on QuickTrim as it’s a range that my sisters and I use when we need a bit of help getting in shape from time to time.” When Kim Kardashian’s Essentials Kit product is used in conjunction with the recommended diet plan it gives the body a chance to eliminate waste products from the colon and decrease the amount of strain put upon the body’s organs due to reduced sugar, salt, fat, protein, alcohol and caffeine intake. Reducing waste from the body is likely to remove any feeling of bloatedness which often accompanies accumulation of waste material and gas in the colon, leaving the body feeling lighter and promoting healthier digestion. The cleansing stage also means that the body is more prepared for the weight loss phase. Once the initial two days have been completed, the body is in a better position to continue on a weight loss program. As the normal diet has already been restricted, side effects due to dietary changes will have begun to subside. The customer will have a more positive outlook due to feeling lighter from the initial cleanse. This sets the scene for moving onto the weight loss phase with heightened motivation to succeed. l Kim will be in London this month for a VIP event at St Pancras Renaissance Hotel.

T

here are many reasons to get out walking: improve your fitness levels, trim your waistline, reduce stress levels and save money on transport costs. Some people even take up a walking challenge such as trekking through a forest, climbing a mountain or rambling around the countryside. Walking is free, doesn’t require any equipment and most of us can do it. So, with nothing to lose and everything to gain, use the National Walking month of May to get into your stride. Here are a few tips and interesting facts to motivate you to take steps towards a heart healthy lifestyle; Get competitive with friends, family and colleagues by logging your steps, miles or walking routes over the week. At an average speed of 3.5 mph it takes only 17 minutes to walk a mile, so take a brisk walk at lunchtime and clock up an extra five miles each week. At around six calories per minute you’ll be burning up an extra 500 calories each week Add more foot mileage by walking to work, parking further away or getting off the bus a stop earlier. Walk to colleagues’ desks instead of emailing them and take the stairs when you can. You’ll be surprised at how much ground you can cover in a day and how quickly you see improvements in energy, alertness and your waist lineMany children are falling short of their recommended 60 minutes of physical activity

every day so walk your children to school where possible. Make it fun by trying to name all the different trees, flowers, bushes or birds on the way and enjoy spending this quality time with them. Walking two miles each school day will mean 380 miles covered in a year which is further than the length of the English Channel (350 miles) If you fancy a personal challenge, then the Yorkshire Three Peaks event on Saturday, June 16 is an ideal opportunity to enjoy some spectacular views of the Yorkshire Dales and give you a great sense of achievement. TV nutritionist Dale on omega 3 crusade TV chef and nutritionist Dale Pinnock is embarking on a national crusade in order to raise awareness of the vital importance of omega 3 in our diets. Omega 3 is a type of vital fat found in our food that has been at the centre of over 15,000 trials in recent years, and has been shown to be a vital ingredient in protecting us from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, depression, anxiety, obesity, and even neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimers disease, yet it is one of the most overlooked and deficient nutrients in the UK.

Awareness

It is found widely in fish, green vegetables, some seeds and fruits – often foods that are low down on the list for us Brits. With so many profound health implications, medical experts the World over are backing this awareness campaign, which has the potential to drastically

he enduring nature of Bob Marley’s fame is anything but a simple pop music phenomenon. Just one index of it is the success of the compilation album Legend, which is one of only 17 albums to pass the 10-million mark in sales (in 2009), and is the second-longest charting album in the history of Billboard magazine’s record-keeping. With an ever-growing fanbase (as evidenced by his 33+ million roster of fans on Facebook and Twitter), his fame has elevated his stature to one of a spiritual beacon. More than 30 years later, the undying messages that go beyond his music make Marley a cultural force to be reckoned with. His way of living was in many ways a political act on the world stage, across the world’s continents. Today, wherever politically minded youth seeks ways to find solidarity they find him to be an ever-potent cultural touchstone. And yet, for all the loyalty shown to the icon, and all the renewing excitement for those still discovering his legacy,

fter the sell-out success of last year’s production of Top Hat in Birmingham, West End producers Kenny Wax and Lee Menzies bring Leonard Bernstein’s big, bright Broadway musical comedy, Wonderful Town, directed by The Royal Exchange Theatre Artistic Director Braham Murray and starring Connie Fisher, to Birmingham Hippodrome from Tuesday 22-Saturday 26 May. The Lowry, Salford have combined forces for the very first time with the Royal Exchange Theatre and The Hallé Orchestra to present a remarkable fully staged, brilliantly choreographed production of legendary composer Leonard Bernstein‘s musical comedy.

Success

Connie Fisher, star of The Sound of Music and of the BBC’s How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, plays aspiring writer Ruth Sherwood who arrives in New York with her beautiful younger sister Eileen. The indomitable pair meet an array of colourful characters along the way, creating chaos at every turn in their search for romance, success and a free meal from Walgreen’s deli. Wonderful Town first premiered in New York in 1953 where it won five Tony Awards including Best Musical. The 2003 revival also won further Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Wonderful Town was last performed in London’s

A new documentary film exploring the life of Bob Marley – musician, revolutionary, legend – has been welcomed by music fans of all ages, including those not even around at the time of the reggae revolutionary’s death in 1981. Here, director Kevin MacDonald discusses the movie many mysteries and unanswered questions have remained. A glut of concert films, biographies and DVDs have attempted to explore his story since his death, but the man himself remains almost as enigmatic as he is beloved. Now, through the unprecedented, combined efforts of the Marley family, Oscar-winning master filmmaker Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland, Life in a Day, One Day in September) and Shangri-La Entertainment (Shine a Light), many of those questions have been given an answer. “The questions I wanted to answer in making the film, was: ‘Why does he still speak to people around the world’ and ‘why does he speak to people so much more profoundly than any other rock artist or popular music artist’.

“What I was fascinated to try to do in this film was to make something very personal. Who is this man? Why did he become so successful? What was the message that he had to give out?” MacDonald’s documentary was made with the cooperation of the Marley family and embraced a variety of sources and speakers. Beyond the joyous and upbeat quality of many of the film’s sequences (Bob’s music was uplifting even in its darker moments), the film delivers a depth of information and insights that would have been impossible without the cooperation the Marley family offered. Bob’s wife Rita and his children, friends and musical colleagues, have opened their hearts, minds and memories to Macdonald. As a result, the unrestricted ac-

cess to a trove of archival imagery mean that this film will stand as the one definitive record of Marley. “Obviously one of the challenges with Bob is that there’s so little great archive footage,” said Macdonald. “A real key for me,” he said Macdonald, “was trying to understand the importance to Bob’s life that he was of mixed race. It’s hard for some of us in both Europe and America to understand the stigma attached to that. “And Bob, coming as he did from the deep countryside in his own day, one of the truly black parts of Jamaica, felt that stigma attached to being of mixed race.” Macdonald’s summation of Marley is a testament to the deeper insight he has achieved. “I feel that that one of the reasons Bob has lived on is because he speaks to the oppressed people of the world, but more than anything else, he speaks to people in the developing world who feel like they’ve been given a bum deal, who feel like they’ve been hopped over by the west or whatever. “And here’s a voice telling them, ‘Your turn will come. You’re down now but you’re going to get up there’.”

l Connie Fisher stars in the musical Wonderful Town West End in 1986. Director Braham Murray said “To direct a great musical with a fabulous orchestra and world renowned conductor is a dream come true. There is only one word to describe it. Wonderful!” The cast for also includes Lucy van Gasse, Michael Xavier, Haydn Oakley, Joseph Alessi, Michael Matus, Sevan Stephan, Nic Greenshields, Tiffany Graves, Annette Yeo, Paul Hawkyard, Natalie Moore-Williams, Katy Hards, Lucinda Lawrence, Lucy James, Frankie Jenna, Oliver

The Grand Hotel Kronenhof is a wonderful location from which to explore the stunning Engadine Valley

ll too often Switzerland gets forgotten as a holiday destination once the snow has melted and Easter past, but this Alpine country is stunning in summer, too, and offers just as many opportunities for family adventures, if not more, than in winter. The Engadine Valley, where the Grand Hotel Kronenhof, Pontresina is located, is positively bursting with activities that suit families with children of all ages. There are mountains to be climbed, hiking trails to be discovered (of varying difficulty and with different themes, such as fairy and flower) by foot, mountain bike or scooter, lakes in which to swim or on which to sail, excursions by train, horse-drawn carriage, boat or helicopter, and child-friendly centres such as a petting zoo and rope park. Better still, Grand Hotel Kronenhof has a comprehensive inhouse programme for children, which means that parents also have the chance to spend some time relaxing on their own. The hotel’s play school offers a wide range of activities that vary daily and include crafts, indoor games, painting and plenty of exercise, then there’s the Children’s Club with its climbing wall, crea-

l Making a splash with the whales in Dominica.

ritish TV Presenter Jimmy Doherty has just completed two weeks of filming in Dominica, the ‘whale-watching capital of the Caribbean’, for a new programme that gets closer to these magnificent mammals and will air in the UK later this year. The presenter was joined by whale anatomist Joy Reidenberg, known for her role as an expert in the Channel 4 hit series ‘Inside Nature’s Giants’, and Andrew Armour, Dominica’s very own ‘Whale Whisperer’, who has been able to build a personal relationship with the incredible animals and is now facilitating a unique and privileged view of their secret lives. Their adventure will be made into a 90-minute documentary, which will be shown in the UK by Channel 4. Throughout this journey they will explore the world of the whale, the life of the people of Dominica and come to understand how the two are linked.

FACTFILE l For more details on the island of Dominica call 0800 0121 467 or visit www.discoverdominica.com The overriding message of the show will be that the health of the whales impacts on the health of the sea on which we all depend. Dominica’s temperate seas and underwater contours provide the ideal environment for whales and dolphins year-round. All whale watching tours have an almost guaranteed sighting success rate and 22 of the 33 known species in the Caribbean have been seen in the island’s waters. The most commonly sighted are sperm whales, which grow to a length of 70 feet and have a blunt, square snout. While on the island, the production team wanted to leave a

legacy of the documentary’s positive message, especially celebrating the work Dominicans have already done to keep whales safe and to encourage further respect of them in the future. Local artist Marcus Cuffy was commissioned to paint a mural on the northern wall of the Roseau City Council building, which was unveiled recently. Describing his experience of filming in Dominica, Jimmy Doherty said: “We have been here for two weeks and our mission is to find out more about your fantastic sperm whales, what they eat, what are their lives like. “Dominica is blessed with natural beauty. After filming here for two weeks we wanted to leave something that everyone can enjoy”. Dominica is a spectacular green island of rugged mountains, lush rainforests and rushing rivers in the Eastern Caribbean, lying south of Guadeloupe and north of Martinique.

No travel boom to UK for Olympics The United Kingdom will only welcome an additional 330,000 international visitors as a direct result of hosting the London 2012 Olympics, reveals research at WTM Vision Conference London. Euromonitor International Head of Travel and Tourism Research Caroline Bremner told senior travel industry delegates, at the event organised by Reed Travel Exhibition’s World Travel Market, the UK will welcome 29.4m international visitors this year, a 2% increase on 2011, or 588,000. The number of international visitors coming for London 2012 represents less than 1% of the total UK inbound market. Bremner told WTM Vision Conference – London delegates that domestic visitors were crucial to the success of the games, saying that around 70% of the eight million tickets sold had gone to British people.

Branson tops poll on holiday chums Virgin boss Richard Branson has pipped both George Clooney and Johnny Depp to the post in a survey that asked British holiday makers who they would most like to stay with! Travellers were asked who they would most like to stay with in a poll carried out by UK holiday rentals specialist Owners Direct and Britain’s favourite entrepreneur came out top. Sir Richard (pictured) achieved a third of the votes with chef Jamie Oliver coming a close second with just over 23% of the votes – maybe because people were hoping for a catered break!

Surprisingly, only 11 per cent of British holidaymakers said they wanted to holiday with George Clooney. Other big names who made it in the top ten were Elton John, Bradley Cooper, Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie and Pippa Middleton, who still only managed to achieve just 9% between them. One holidaymaker gave her reason for choosing Richard Branson over George Clooney: “Because it would probably be a spacious place in the country with good books and nice food and George Clooney wouldn’t fancy me, let’s face it!”

New film opens door on life of a Jamaican icon

Bob was mixed race. However, in the documentary Marley proclaimed and showed the way he felt about racial division “Mi nuh come from black side or white side, mi come from God side”. In the final days of Bob’s life he requested all 11 of his children visit him at a hospital in Miami where he was suffering with cancer. One of the most touching moments of the film was when Marley’s daughter Cedella spoke of the first time she went to visit her father. It was the first time she saw him without his famous locks, looking so tiny. The documentary dealt with his life in Jamaica, his personal relationships, his musical journey and his love for the people and the final days of his life.

Nastasia Grant previews the new film Marley

W

e have heard and seen many documentaries about Bob Marley; the type of life he lived and the man he was, but were they credible to his character or not? Well, one of the best ways we will ever find out is by seeing the film directed by Kevin MacDonald called “Marley”, as it has the stamp of approval from the Marley family. The documentary featured those who knew him best including his beloved wife Rita, Cindy Breakespeare, Chris Blackwell, Lee “Scratch” Peary, Bunny Wailer, Neville Garrick, Edward Seaga, Cedella Marley and his son David “Ziggy” Marley, who is also one of the film’s producers. The film’s premiere was held at the Emancipation Park in Kingston where people of all cultures came out to watch the documentary. The event was hosted by Michael ‘Ibo’ Cooper, co-founder of Third World. Many dignitaries were in full representation. Member of Parliament, minister of culture, Hon. Lisa Hanna representing the prime minister spoke about the Hon. Robert Nesta Marley OM and his contribution to reggae music and referred

to him as “one of the greatest humans to ever walk the earth”, and many would agree. The public park was lit with big screens and the voices of those who were in at-

tendance to profess their immense love for Bob Marley, everyone was buzzing about the film as they awaited a milestone in reggae music. The honourable Robert Nesta Marley OM is honoured by Jamaicans for being the man who brought reggae music to the world and gave Jamaica international status. Bob Marley put Jamaica on the map culturally, socially and artistically. He was born in Nine Miles, St. Ann, Jamaica to Cedella Booker, a black woman and Captain Narvel Marley, a white man. This information was surprising to many, as most people did not know that

Marley is said to have released his first song “Judge Not” at the age of 16. Marley did not just live for himself, he lived for the people. Although there were many stories to be told, Kevin Macdonald had to compress as much as possible within the almost 2½ hour long documentary. However, he is pleased with the film and describes Bob Marley as “Our Man”, as he brought reggae music to the four corners of the world. The film took us from the Legend’s birthplace; the hills of St. Ann to Trench Town, Kingston and to the world when Jah finally took him home. The film definitely took us back in time and definitely received my five stars.

talks to NASA scientist Camille Alleyne

Where are you from originally? I am from Trinidad and Tobago So you’re a NASA Scientist? I am an Aerospace Engineer and have worked in this capacity, managing space projects both at NASA and Department of Defense, for the last 16 years. I am currently the Assistant Program Scientist for the International Space Station (ISS) and specifically responsible for developing innovative strategies for communicating the benefits and value of the ISS. I hold a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering and currently working on my Doctorate in Educational Leadership. What inspired you to literally reach for the stars? I always had an innate curiosity about space. I remember at the age of seven, sitting on the trunk of my dad’s car every night, star gazing. I was always fascinated by the vastness and the awe-inspiring nature of space. Little did I know that those moments were shaping the trajectory of my life. My parents always encouraged me to

Help yourself by helping others By Latoya Wakefield

“We all know the world we live in isn’t perfect, and it may never be, but volunteering is a key step in attaining something that is close to perfection.” So says Candice Ramsaroop, an avid volunteer, of the More Than Tomorrow Project, Inc. and other charities. I recently met Candice, a very interesting person who hails from our brother country, Trinidad. What captivated me the most about her was her dedication to volunteering. She didn’t just do it for the credits, she did it to make a difference in someone’s life and because it makes her feel better as a person.

Education

I strongly agree with her sentiments and I do believe that through volunteering, we can make ourselves and the world better. No man is an island, we all need help, some more than others. With the economy shaky, education expensive, cost of living on the rise, now is the time for us to help each other. Volunteering is one of the ways in which we can lend a hand to all those who need it. United we conquer and therefore if we all pitch in with helping another then we can overcome most if not all of our nation’s problems. Of course, it’s not easy work and some may be long term, but if you stick to it,

l Candice Ramsaroop, pictured second right, is an enthusiastic volunteer and supporter of good causes we’ll gain so much more as a people. According to Candice, the two key duties of volunteering are commitment and responsibility. Hence, you must be prepared for such before you volunteer. You can start as small as offering your neighbour a hot meal which they may lack and as big as creating your own nonprofit charitable organization. Or you could just do volunteer work through such an organisation. It can be a short term, on- off gesture

such as the recently held Stigma run or it can be long term such as regularly visiting homes to socialise, assist with lessons, do domestic work, some administrational work, etc. If you never did volunteer work before or plan to start doing it on a regular basis, I suggest you start with your community. Explore the area you live in and assess what it needs. Visit the schools, churches, youth clubs, community centers and find out which way you can be of assistance.

Maybe you could offer an extra-curriculum activity or assist with a homework program, host an event for a pressing cause, offer career advice to the youth, use your resources such as a computer to assist with a project for church. Find ways in which you can use your skills, knowledge or whatever else you can offer to help someone. Take it from Candice who has been a volunteer for about nine years that through helping someone, you also help yourself.

do what came naturally to me, and what came naturally was building and fixing things – solving problems. It was in college while studying aeronautical engineering, the day the tragic accident of the Challenger Space Shuttle, I decided that NASA was where I wanted to spend my career. You run a charity for young women? Yes, my non-profit Brightest Stars Foundation is dedicated to the education and empowerment of young women and girls around the world to be future leaders through the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Since 2007 when I founded the organisation, we have inspired and empowered countless girls and young women around the world to aspire to pursue careers in STEM. My intention with my humanitarian work is to give voice to the voiceless young girls around the world through the gift of a quality, challenging education. Who’s your role model? I have several starting with my mother, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr, Mahatma Ghandi and Nelson Mandela. They are all extraordinary human beings who have had a profound love for humanity and a huge commitment to being of service.

BUSINESS

Still hope for young guns With the latest rise in youth unemployment figures, questions are being raised as to whether a new generation of young entrepreneurs will be created as enterprising young people go into business for themselves. Andrew Gilbert, Managing Director of data centre and communications firm Node4 began his company at the age of 23, being a part of what is now the troubled 16-24 age bracket. He seized an opportunity to set up his company that has grown 363% over the last five years and now has a turnover in excess of £11m per year.

Chamber cautious over fall in jobless

Business leaders across the West Midlands have welcomed the first fall in unemployment figures this year. Figures for job seekers’ allowance claimants were 172,445 in March – a fall from 175,134 in February and 173,053 in January. Michael Ward, president of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, said many of the jobs created are for part-time work and therefore the figures are still disappointingly high. The latest quarterly economic survey (QES) of Chamber members showed that the number of companies which said they were recruiting at a low 35 per cent. He said: “This is down from the last quarter of 2011. The West Midlands economy just can’t grow fast enough to absorb both the increase in the unemployed and job losses in the public sector.”

Skilled

In the latest QES only 20 per cent of services and 22 per cent of manufacturers predicted that their workforce would expand in the second quarter of this year. Mr. Ward said: “This is a very poor percentage rate.” To grow employment further, the Chamber of Commerce is calling on the Government to reduce employment legislation to enable companies to hire and fire more easily and access a skilled workforce. Mr. Ward said: “While some red tape has already been cut, it is not happening fast enough and there is much more that the Government needs to do to encourage businesses to recruit. “Companies must play their part but that is only half of the solution. “The Chamber is working with businesses and schools to encourage partnerships where businesses can support schools and let them know what skills they require and where schools can support businesses by getting students ready for work.”

He said, “The 16-24 age range is a very significant period for young people in the formative years of their working lives. “Many talented young people who are struggling to get their foot on the career ladder will be forced by the economic conditions to set up their own enterprises. “Many people had great ideas in the past for new businesses but may not have had the courage to go it alone. “In the current economic climate, the severe constraints we currently have make starting up a business a much more appealing option.

“At the age of 23, I was very fortunate in that I had an idea for my business which I felt could work but I also had the courage to follow through and some supportive investors. “But at the centre of my plan was the desire to control my own destiny and develop my idea to empower businesses to save money through technology. “Today, that dream has resulted in Node4 owning a string of rapidly growing data centre sites across the UK, making us Britain’s largest independent provider of local data centres. “What UK industry needs is for

more young people to be more enterprising by researching their ideas and applying their talents, bright minds and aspirations to the world of business.” Node4 is a specialist in data centre and communications solutions. Launched in 2004, the company has grown rapidly in the past eight years through its comprehensive service offering and the growth in demand for hosted IT from businesses in the UK. It has four state-of-the-art data centre facilities, two located in Derby and one in Leeds and one in Northampton, which offer the latest in security technology.

Flights on the new route are on sale now with fares starting from £22.99 (one way, including taxes). The route will mainly serve the region’s business passengers by providing flexible access to Belfast but it will also offer more

We are confident this new route will be a popular addition for Midlands passengers. “Importantly, it will also provide inbound tourism for Birmingham from the Northern Ireland capital city, benefitting the local economy and driving more footfall to England’s second city.”

The inaugural flight will take off from Birmingham Airport on October 22, initially a daily service, and from October 29 will increase to two flights a day on weekdays, and one on weekends. Martyn Lloyd, Air Services Development Director from Birmingham Airport, said: “We’re delighted such a successful brand like easyJet is expanding from Birmingham, adding to its existing Geneva and Grenoble routes. “This is a major development for us and we are delighted that easyJet is committing to this expansion.” l For more information visit www.easyJet.com

Ward looks at positives

The latest figure showing GDP has shrunk to minus 0.2 per cent is disappointing but Midlands business leaders have warned against talking the British economy down. Michael Ward, President of Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, said that while technical recession UK-wide had not been avoided, there are clear bright sparks in the West Midlands and South East which are significantly outperforming the rest of the country and experiencing marked growth. He said: “The Chamber’s latest economic survey shows sustained growth across domestic and export sales and orders in Greater Birmingham. “This is being driven by the region’s manufacturing sector which is reporting strong demand in Asia and America.

dgbaston Stadium has appointed Guy Wolfenden as Head of Commercial as part of newly structured team led by Commercial Director, Gareth Roberts, who also joins the Club early next month. Guy arrives from Somerset CCC, where he has worked for 15 years and is currently the Head of Sales & Marketing. In his new role he will manage Warwickshire CCC’s relationships with its commercial partners, the new 24-hour ticketing operation with Ticketmaster as well as the Club’s membership packages. He replaces Darren Andrew

who left the role of Sales & Sponsorship Manager in March. Commenting on his appointment, Guy said: “Not only is Edgbaston one of the most iconic venues in world cricket, but it also boasts some of the best facilities available, following its £32 million Pavilion Stand redevelopment last summer. “Like Somerset, Warwickshire is another fantastic Club with a very loyal fan base, and with a stadium that can host the world’s biggest cricket matches. “I’m looking forward to working with the new Commercial Team and utilising my experience of the cricket industry to the benefit of the Club.”

System fits bill for police Warwickshire Police has just upgraded its intelligence database to the latest version of ABM’s IMS Intelligence. The system will improve the efficiency of Warwickshire Police staff due to a more intuitive user interface, improved workflow functionality and better system performance.

Jackie Whordley, manager of Protective Services Systems at Warwickshire Police, said that her staff are pleased with the upgraded system: “The computer-based training has gone smoothly and users are finding the transition troublefree. The upgrade project ran relatively smoothly.”

Gareth Roberts, Commercial Director at Edgbaston, commented: “Guy comes to Edgbaston with an outstanding track record of growing revenues on sponsorship, membership and ticketing, so he will be a great addition to the team. “The Commercial Team has done a great job over the last few years of bringing in many new partners, who have remained with the Club.

Challenge

“The new team gives us the opportunity to not only maintain these great relationships with leading businesses, but also explore the many other opportunities that have been created from the redevelopment of Edgbaston,” he said. “We’re all looking forward to the challenge ahead.” As well as the impending arrivals of Gareth and Guy, Catherine Nuttall will join as Commercial Executive in May. A recent graduate from the University of Birmingham, Catherine will also work alongside Tom Rawlings (Communications Manager) and Arnes Pobric (Strategic Marketing Officer) within the Edgbaston Commercial Team.

“Nonetheless we must continue to push for a better environment to encourage businesses to invest. “We are asking the Chancellor to reverse his Budget decision to decrease the annual investment allowance from £100,000 to £25,000. “This is a quick way of getting business to invest now in capital equipment. “Revised planning procedures and new major developments such as the Genting Casino at the NEC and new Birmingham airport runway will create jobs but these plans need to be pushed forward more rapidly and not held up by red tape.”

Banking on the menu for Vaisakhi

Understanding what banks are looking for when extending loans and finding out how to work with your bank manager was some of the business advice passed on to over 200 Asian businesses who attended this year’s Vaisakhi event. Jerry Green, international commercial manager at HSBC Bank said the Institute of Asian Businesses (IAB) networking event was an ideal opportunity for HSBC to provide information which would open up ac-

cess to the bank’s business funding. He said: “Borrowers need to give thought and preparation to how they put forward lending requests and ensure that they provide supporting financial information and dialogue, to not only support their request, but also make the best business case they can, and differentiate it from other similar requests that they receive.” The event at St. John’s Hotel in Solihull was hosted by IAB president Nasir Awan,

with presentations from Eric Williams of IAB patron, Grant Thornton and Birmingham City Council’s adoption and fostering recruitment team. IAB President Nasir said: “All our guests had a wonderful evening celebrating the important festival of Vaisakhi in a great venue with excellent speeches and superb hospitality. Vaisakhi is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the South Asian community.”

Cartwright King’s immigration team in Birmingham will be providing a range of immigration services to businesses, community groups and students including points based system applications, naturalisation, indefinite & limited leave applications, EEA, entry clearance, spouse, dependant, family reunion applications and legal advice on Asylum and Human Rights. Hera said: “There is a growing demand for good quality legal advice on immigration issues in the West Midlands which is currently not being adequately met. Our focus is on quality tailored advice as no two cases are alike, and a fixed fee approach will ensure that there is no mystery in relation to costs

Immigration law is an area that Cartwright King have specialised in for a number of years, with the firm’s offices in Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Sheffield already providing a range of legal services. “It was therefore a natural progression to extend these services to Birmingham and I am delighted to join the firm in such a vibrant city where tailored advice on immigration matters is so urgently needed.” Michael Thurston, managing director of Cartwright King said: “I am really pleased that Hera has joined the firm in Birmingham. She will be a great asset as an expert adviser.”

It’s green for go at BMW Green-Car-Guide.com, the UK’s original green car news website, has announced BMW Group as the winner of its Greenest Manufacturer of the Year Award 2012. A key factor in BMW Group winning the award was the wide range of BMW and MINI products that offer class-leading emissions and economy, whilst also delivering an excellent driving experience. This is the third year out of five that BMW Group has won the Green-Car-Guide.com Greenest Manufacturer of the Year Award. Paul Clarke, founder and editor of Green-Car-Guide.com, said “Although judging the winner for the Greenest Manufacturer of the Year Award was harder than ever this year, BMW Group genuinely deserves this accolade, due to the company producing large volumes of cars that genuinely combine efficiency, performance, a great driving experience and an aspirational brand.

ash-strapped drivers are putting themselves, their passengers and other road users at serious risk of injury by opting for part-worn tyres, according to campaign group TyreSafe. The group has issued the stark warning following a month-long nationwide investigation where it purchased a random sample of 50 part worn tyres. The tyres were inspected by an independent tyre expert and the alarming results found that 98 per cent of the tyres were being sold illegally. But more concerning was that over a third of the tyres were found to contain potentially dangerous forms of damage or non-compliance.

Amazing

“As well as its current range featuring the brand’s pioneering EfficientDynamics technologies, we’re also on the verge of seeing hybrid and electric cars come to market from BMW, which will add another facet to the company’s green credentials.” Tim Abbott, Managing Director of BMW Group UK, said: “BMW is delighted to have been awarded this honour as it highlights all of the amazing work we have done to lower vehicle emissions and improve fuel consumption figures but without losing any driver enjoyment. “We have the lowest average fleet CO2 emissions of any premium manufacturer. 2012 is the year we will introduce the ActiveHybrid3 and the ActiveHybrid5 saloons, show further developments with the BMW i brand, our vision of electromobility in the near future, and launch other vehicles all with ever lowering emissions figures.”

l The impressive new Ford Transit Custom is the ideal vehicle for skilled tradesmen

he all-new Ford Transit Custom makes its global debut at the Birmingham CV Show, bringing new levels of style, driver appeal and functionality to the one-tonne commercial vehicle market. Representing a completely new generation of Ford one-tonne vehicles, the Transit Custom marks a major step in Ford’s commitment to refresh its entire commercial vehicle line-up by 2014. With its bold new design, carlike interior and outstanding driving dynamics, the Ford Transit Custom is targeting an expanded share of the segment, appealing to a broad range of professionals,

skilled tradesmen and small businesses. The new model has lost none of the legendary Transit toughness and value, however, combining class-leading load-carrying ability, impressive durability and attractive cost-of-ownership – with best-in-class fuel economy.

Proud

“The Transit Custom is a completely new kind of one-tonne vehicle from Ford,” said Jesus Alonso, director CV Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “This is a stylish, modern van which customers will be proud to have on their driveway, while losing none of the hard-working

attitude that they expect from a Transit. “The launch of this new range marks the start of a far-reaching transformation of Ford’s global commercial vehicle range. “With more new models set to be revealed in the coming months, 2012 is destined to be a very exciting year for our commercial vehicle business.” With a full range of van, kombi, and double-cab-in-van models, the dynamic new Transit Custom will go on sale later in 2012 in Europe as well as other global markets. The Transit Custom model will not be offered in North America.

Indeed, one tyre was described by the inspection engineer as having the “potential to kill” as it still contained a metal object penetrating 5cm through the tread in a manner which was likely to result in sudden and total tyre failure had it been fitted to a vehicle. Other safety breaches included dangerous and unsafe repairs, exposed cords, bead damage and evidence of runflat damage. “Although a number of clear regulations exist which permit the sale of part-worn tyres, it’s obvious from our investigation that these are not being adhered to,” said Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “Not only are drivers putting their own lives at risk, but they

are also endangering their passengers, which in many cases may be their children, and other road users. Before buying part worn tyres I would urge drivers to ask themselves if the risk of buying part worn tyres is really worth it?” With motoring costs reaching record levels, a growing number of drivers are choosing part worntyres in the belief that they offer better value. However, TyreSafe’s investigation also disproved this myth as it found that the average cost per mm of useable tread of the part worn tyres was £6.33, whereas the comparable cost when selecting an equivalent new tyre was 16 per cent lower at £5.32.

The vehicle’s driving performance features are matched by its impressive advances in the area of fuel economy. The fuel consumption of 20.4 mpg (NEDC combined) is a 2.7 mpg improvement on the predecessor model, representing fuel savings of 13 percent. l The G 63 AMG arrives in Autumn 2012 and UK pricing and specification are still to be confirmed.

Motorists face new regulation in France British drivers heading through France must carry Breathalysers in their vehicles by Law this summer or risk a fine. The new legislation which will come into force on July 1 and will affect anyone intending to drive in France this summer. It has already resulted in car accessory retailer and Autocentres operator, Halfords seeing a strong demand for the, French Government approved, disposable breathalyser kits. Costing £4.99 the new twin pack has already proved popular with drivers planning to head for the continent. “We want to ensure that UK drivers are aware of what they need to carry in their car in France. We have plenty of breathalysers in stock and we are ready to help,” said Paul McClenaghan, Halfords Commercial Director. French Police are expected to carry out random checks on drivers crossing into France via Calais to enforce the new rules. The French drink-driving limit is 50mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, substantially below the UK’s limit of 80mg.

Advised

Motorists found with a level of between 50mg and 80mg of alcohol in their blood can be fined 135 euros (£112) and lose six out of 12 points on their driving licence. A driver who is over the limit in France also risks a fine of 4,500 euros (£3,744), losing their licence and being sent to prison for up to two years. Motorists are being advised to carry at least two of the singleuse breathalysers so that if they have used one to check their alcohol levels, they can still show police they have an unopened kit if stopped. Those drivers caught without a kit will face a fine of 11 euros (£9) but the French authorities have said there will be a transitional period until November before police start issuing penalties.
