Through the eyes of the bride! Spring has only just started and with the last drops of the Winter-rain disappearing, trees lighting up with the most beautiful colour decorations and the Cape Town sunshine eager to take its place where clouds not too long ago graced the sky… well, life seemed blissful! To add to this inconceivable happiness, I was getting ready, both physically and emotionally, to marry the man of my dreams and having waited a long 5 years for this day to arrive, nothing could possibly dampen this feeling of utter blessing in my heart! Ever since the day Lesley nervously proposed and I, full of giggles and also somewhat nervous said yes, we immediately started drawing up all kids of lists - from the budget list right down to the guest list. This day, we vowed, would be the most beautiful celebration in history and since the soccer world cup, for the very first time was hosted in SA this year, we knew our day had to be even more talked about and remembered by all our guests for a very long time to come! With that said, I’m sure you’d guess there might have been a myriad of people, hundreds of doves released into the sky to signify our union, huge reception with 10

Ice sculptures and French Champaign flowing freely, right? Wrong! Instead we opted for an Intimate affair with only the closest of family and friends and kept it small, but in no way less Lavish! D-day started bright and early for me, the bride, and as a traditional couple it’s been quite a few hours since my soon-to-be hubby and I had last seen each other - The next time I see Lesley, I’ll come walking down the aisle and he’ll be there waiting to make me his wife. This thought nearly paralysed me with

anxiety and most of all happiness! If ever there was a beautiful, perfect wind-free morning in Cape Town, this was it. Just yesterday it seemed like winter was not really ready to let go. Today, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. So before God, our family & friends, under a flawless sky, in a lush garden at Silvermist Estate we said our ‘I dos’! At the Luncheon everyone commented on the tranquillity of the venue and cosiness of our reception. Even if we paid more, would we not be able to buy a more special moment in time. Sure, of cause we spent decent amounts of money where absolutely needed, like

on our photographers and making sure every second of our small and intimate, yet lavish wedding day is captured in all its splendour! Sometimes in life, if not all the time, the most beautiful things are created with more about quality and less about quantity in mind. Our Wedding day, as we dreamt, turned out to be a day every one of our less than 50 guests will remember for a very long time. As for the happy couple - I can only hope that my story and these images give you an idea, however slight, of just how proud I am to be called Mrs Marks‌

COVER SHOOT

Jadwiga Malkiewicz Cover Girl

The times, they are a changing - by our stylist helena sheridan

It felt a lot like mid-winter on the morning we shot the autumn themed cover story. I had my warmest jersey on under my rain coat and the raindrops danced on my windscreen as I drove to Newlands (infamously the coldest, wettest little suburb of this city!) But the autumn coloured leaves on the trees that lined the road to Rhodes Memorial breathed new life into the grey day and after a few cups of (good) coffee from the restaurant at the Memorial our newly introduced team was ready to roll. Jadwigka, the half Polish half Afrikaans model who arrived with a head full of curlers – the splendour of which I last saw on my late Grandma in the 80’s – proclaiming “this is how we do it in Pretoria ok...” and sat patiently while her and Henry Maritz, the ever entertaing make-up artist, 30

debated which number in the Mac foundation range she REALLY is.

TEAM Photofuzion, were already playing with their digital and photographic toys, filming everything from blusher and cappuccinos to me unpacking shoes and accessories... Behind the scenes footage can be viewed here!

Shooting begins...

The first outfit I had put together was to be the cover shot. A mix of two current trends; the lively, free spirited 1970s and the natural, crisp colours of the season. “Think Donna from That 70s show” I wrote in my style diary... It’s boyish and warm yet sexy and stylish. By layering various brown, cream, mustard and orange tones I created an autumn feel to fit with the changing trees. The outdoor natural look was completed with knee high leather boots and a sporty yet warm body warmer. Adding accessories such as a beret, a scarf and wooden jewellery completes the look. According to the model, this was her favourite look. “This is a comfortable outfit, easy to mix and match accessories with and it’s something I would wear as a day look to the Waterfront or when going to a wine tasting in Stellenbosch. I love how the colours make me ‘pop out’. “

The weather played along miraculously on the day – every time we stepped outside to shoot the raindrops dried up and the sun peeked out from behind a grey cloud to see what we were getting up to. After a wardrobe change, hair and make-up touch up and a debate about Lady Gaga (whose music was blaring from Henry’s Blackberry, carefully propped up amongst eye shadow and lipstick) we were ready to shoot the second look. For round two I also tried to marry two ever-present trends. Firstly the muscular power suit trend, where woman wear everything from “boyfriend jeans” to tailored jackets, ties and suspenders. I executed this in black and white – you cannot go wrong with this combo, it is always on trend. By combining strong looks like a formal black shirt (with neck tie detail), white vintage pull over and slightly more playful denim waistcoat with skinny jeans and sexy heels we created a powerful look. Lesley shot it carefully against the backdrop of mountain along the lines created...

For the final look we went for something completely different. Picking another trend of the season to execute our way, I went for the soft, feminine 1950s inspired look in dirty pink, maroon and beige. The look was created with a fluffy hat, vintage fur around the shoulders and a high-waist tweed skirt paired with a sexy chiffon shirt. We added gloves and boots in maroon hues to finish it off. The shoot was a great success and i think it shows in the images. It is fantastic when a newly introduced team all work well together, when things just click. We hope we have moved you to embrace the chill in the air, to be inspired by the colours of the changing season and to get dressed up on those grey mornings when really you just want to stay in your cosy bed!

Snapshots of a beautiful soul ~ By Lezanne Janse van Rensburg

One should look at old photographs more often. Really, take my word for it. Not for the nostalgic trip or to laugh at that revolting dress, but rather to see where exactly you came from and where you’re headed. For years I ignored the dusty corner of my closet, the corner containing a mountain of photo albums just waiting there. Waiting to reveal my little secrets. But during yet another therapeutic house-cleaning session I spotted their dusty covers and soon found myself sitting on my bedroom floor, just enjoying the journey. It was an exciting experience to be witness to a life I had inadvertently forgotten. I relived my years as the sweet, pigtailed blonde who spent her days in her mother’s bright red shoes and made garlands from ivy. I was a true princess with a delicate dress made of old curtains and lipstick darkening my thin lips as well as the surrounding areas. Suddenly, I was confronted with the question of why we, as woman, so easily leave that princess-mentality behind. As I paged through more albums I noticed how I slowly transformed into a confident and rather attractive woman. One photograph in particular grabbed my attention. It was taken at a time when I was young, naive and somewhat rebellious – acting seventeen at the age of twenty six. I used to flirt around with the boys just to experience the thrill of trapping another poor soul into buying me a drink. I am no longer that “wild child” my parents struggled to understand. Instead, I have grown to become a mother, a wife, an individual who has no choice but to be the responsible one. The leather-bound albums rested comfortably in my hands and I sat there thinking. Just thinking about how many times life kicked me to the ground and I somehow managed to survive. In fact, one could almost say I am a walking miracle, physical evidence that there truly must be something like divine intervention. It was strange. After almost twelve long years these books, which previously served no meaningful purpose, were suddenly the most valuable items in my life. They were the narrator to an eventful life and every picture was like snapshots of my psyche. And when I closed my eyes I allowed myself to go back to those exuberant family lunches or the first time my daughter gazed at me with such intensity and said “I love you, mommy”. I came to the blissful realisation that thus far I have had a fantastic life. As I carefully flipped through the yellowed pages covered in memories I noticed some of the photographs were starting to come loose. They were almost clinging onto the pages, and in some poetic way they signified aspects of my life which gradually became undone, threatening to fall away. One such aspect would be the relationship with my mother. To this present day our bond has been, shall I say, fluctuating. One day we are the best of friends and the next we would be at each other’s throats. It was a frayed relationship, but a relationship nonetheless. At least we both were aware of the most crucial fact – we loved each other more than words could ever describe. Hours went by and I was still stuck in this movie of my life. It was a glorious journey of self-discovery and it served as reassurance that everything always works itself out. I was proud of who I was, because now I had a better understanding of who I was and how I became this complex being. Just a simple browse through a few inanimate photo albums placed my entire life into perspective, and it didn’t cost me a cent.

46

Eventually I convinced myself to re-enter the realm of reality. But as I safely placed the albums back in their dark little corner I realised that life shouldn’t be this fast-moving. We should at least stop every once in a while and take a few more snapshots.
