FOREWORD

[HUNDRED] 100 Photographize Best Selected 2020 VOL. 01 recognizes those who inspire us. In this book, Photographize collects the works of 100 visionary artists that pushed the limits, and we are thrilled to share them with the world. We dreamt this book for a long time and put all our love in every page. But it was not conceived in vacuum, it came at a very special time. 2020 will certainly pass to history as an incredible year. The sudden appearance of a cruel and invisible enemy forced us to pause, distance and put various aspects of society in a state of suspended animation. But this could have never been the final outcome, it is simply not human nature. Facing adversity, we connected like never before. Being far no longer meant being separated. We created new tools, we built networks and we thrived. Daily examples of bravery, hope and inspiration shined bright like the stars in the sky. At the same time, a long-postponed dialogue in quest for a fairer society took the center stage. The incredible energy of a special moment was palpable everywhere. During these challenging times, artists unleashed their imagination and connected us to our humanity. They found new ways of expression and of reaching their audiences. More than ever, art became a safe oasis where we could find beauty and inspiration. This book is a tribute to these artists and their incredible work. 2020. We completed another orbit around the Sun. The world came to a standstill. But, fortunately, creators

kept creating. [HUNDRED] 100 Photographize Best Selected 2020 VOL. 01 is a celebration of their talent.

GEMMY WOUD -BINNENDIJK NETHERLANDS

www.gemmywoudbinnendijk.com

05

Gemmy is a Dutch artist. After she graduated as Goldsmith, she studied Multimedia design. In March 2016, she started photography, it changed her life. Attracted to the light, composition, and use of color used by painters of the golden age, her great passion for painting and drawing was recovered in photography. Every photo is created with a huge investment in good preparation (sketches, story, and mood boards). Carefully chosen color schemes within, for example, styling, set, mood, and makeup, all these ingredients make the story within the frame cohesive. This, combined with the love for humans and a strong creative urge, creates staged portraits in storytelling themes. Born mid-seventies, Gemmy is a mother of 5 kids, an autodidact, but most of all, a sensitive and caring artist with a never-ending creative urge.

Spanish photographer Andrea Torres Balaguer redefines the concept of portrait, exploring the edge between reality and the subconscious. She regards her images as memories we keep from our dreams. Following her previous work (Moon) where the characters hide their faces voluntarily to make them whoever you imagine, Andrea takes away the identity of the character by concealing their faces. “It seemed a bit aggressive to me, especially because was me 'brushstroke' their faces, stealing their identity. For that reason, I decided to do it to myself by taking self-portraits. And it has a new sense: I strip myself of my identity, but I can be whoever the spectators want. I have a lot of possible new identities except my original.” “The Unknown” is about the identity concept and the importance of it when we are talking about a portrait.

ANNA DEVÍS and DANIEL RUEDA SPAIN

www.annandaniel.com

Although it may seem surprising or hard to believe, besides some basic image processing, Anna and Daniel create these surreal scenes without the use of photo-editing software. Instead, they carefully set the scene in real life using all sorts of everyday objects, unexpected locations, and tons of natural light. 07

Set in cities from all over the world and full of striking locations, clean shapes, and pastel colors, these images do not only speak of abstraction, elegance, and simplicity. As a result of their inventive use of everyday objects and worldly locations, their work also invites us to rediscover our own surroundings with a fresh new look. Walls, streets, and facades, usually relegated to the background, become the absolute protagonists of these whimsical photographs through the eyes of this creative duo tirelessly seeking to draw a smile on our faces. As a matter of fact, those of Daniel Rueda and Anna Devís are photographs that undoubtedly transmit joy and optimism, encouraging us, as the Monty Python would sing, to look at the bright side of life.

Australian-born artist, Ben Thomas, began working with the moving image in his younger years which sparked his initial interest in the visual arts, but it wasn’t until his mid-twenties, when he moved to Melbourne, that he began to pursue photography. Not knowing the city well, Ben saw photography as a tool to discover and document his new home. It was this process of documentation as well as his pure fascination with his new surroundings that sparked his passion for photography. The objective of his photographic work is to create pieces that reflect a strong and individual visual aesthetic along with a revealing narrative. For Ben, the most important factor in moving forward has been to relentlessly follow his own vision and to execute that plan without compromise. Describing his photographic style as hyperreality, Ben creates works that challenge the boundaries of how a photograph is constructed and perceived. Ben poses to challenge the perceptions not only of what photography is, but how the built environment impacts our daily lives. Through this body of work, Ben aims to provide a way for people to consider the relationships that they form with their surroundings and how their environment affects them.

Erik Johansson (born 1985) is a photographer and image creator from Sweden based in Prague, Czech Republic. His work can be described as surreal scenes created by combining different photographs. Erik works on both personal and commissioned projects with clients all around the world. In contrast to traditional photography he doesn't capture moments, he captures ideas with the help of his camera and imagination. The goal is to make it look as realistic as possible even if the scene itself contains impossible elements. In the end, it all comes down to problem-solving, finding a way to capture the impossible. To Erik, it's always important with a high level of realism in his work. It's important to make people feel like they are part of the scene, to relate to it. Although his work consists of a lot of work in post-production he always tries to capture as much as possible in-camera. "No one can tell you that it doesn’t look realistic if you actually captured it for real."

Bara’s surreal images balance on the edge of beauty and weirdness, in between real and fictional setups, originating from her sense of absurd humour and affinity for the lightness that helps her to cope with serious topics. Instead of manipulating images digitally in post-production as to render a magical ambience, Bara works with real props and objects, which lend her subjects a rare authenticity. She meticulously plans all of her shoots in advance, and her detailed sketches, custom-made props, and costumes are usually part of her exhibitions. Including a Hasselblad Masters Award in 2014, Bara has been a recipient of numerous awards, such as the winner of the Photographer of the Year 2009 and 2011 by Czech Grand Design and her first director’s feat has been awarded bronze by prestigious Clio Awards in 2019. Recently, she has branched out into the world of moving images, creating videos based on her stills, which has created another outlet for her to build a new reality.

Subsequent travel to Boston, Paris, and Venice served to illuminate the unbreakable bond between architecture and its relationship with light. Since 1998, Moises began to explore photography with a broad interest in artistic composition, influences, history, and styles. He appreciates the history of the medium and states that he has learned from the photographic work of Sebastião Salgado, Edward Weston, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Eugene Atget.

Turning reality upside down and creating works that run counter to preconceived ideas are part of Angelo Musco’s artistic strategies. Living structures (i.e.: nests, amniotic sacs, eggs) both literally and figuratively stir a depth of emotion closely related to Musco’s personal experience of a delayed and traumatic birth–one which left both physical and subconscious scars. The human body is the artist’s medium. He melds bodies like hundreds of brush strokes, creating large compositions that are re-workings of nature’s structures. Born in Naples (Italy) in 1973, Musco’s studies alternated between the Academia Delle Belle Arti of Naples and the University of Fine Arts in Granada, Spain. Currently based in New York, Angelo’s work has been executed state-side and internationally, staging his shoots from London to Buenos Aires from the Red Woods CA to such exotic locations as Baku and Istanbul. His work, approaching epic proportions, has been displayed throughout the world, including Art Basel and the Venice Biennale.

'In My Silence', continues Jono Dry’s series on mental health and its metaphors. The work was drawn over four-hundred hours - “This new pencil drawing, ‘In My Silence’, continues with the theme of my previous works centered around mental health. This drawing was such a pleasure to work on; it seemed to flow so easily. We are told to constantly push ourselves, that discomfort is good, that it promotes growth. While this is true, it also creates the idea that when we are comfortable, we become stagnant. This drawing reminded me that it’s okay to seek comfort, to enjoy the process, and to return to the familiar.”

15

“I remember that when I was a child I used to spend hours alone in my room playing with my toys. I also remember that the best part of it was customizing them and creating worlds where they could exist … Now that I am “grownup" I realize that I have never stopped playing and that the only difference is that now I do it with a camera in my hands”. Photography and digital art have given Felix the chance to bring those childhood scenes to life. Photography with scale models is not so different from other areas of photography, but it has its peculiarities. You have to think big, but at the same time, small. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

I take pictures of things and places that resonate with me—for reasons I’m not always entirely aware of. I suspect the philosophy that drives my images is my history. I had a rocky start; my first forty or fifty years were pretty miserable, to tell the truth. But now that I'm a senior citizen, I'm doing much better; I give thanks constantly for the miracle of being alive and I would call myself a happy and peaceful man. I think gratitude is an essential part of my healing process, and my pictures, especially the most recent ones - the underwater nudes - are an expression of that. I know there's an endless amount of ugliness and suffering in the world, but that's not what I choose to photograph. Instead, I want to make pictures of how beautiful we are and how there’s forgotten beauty all around us. Even in the places we no longer think to look. I don't know if that's going to earn me a place in the panoply of the World's Great Photographers, but it's what I feel called upon to do, and I’m very committed to doing it.

Martin creates images that appear to be stills from a film — one that walks the line between fantasy and reality. Leif Steiner creates soulful portraits that open a window into the daily existence of traditional communities with minimal contact with the outside world. He’s currently working on a multi-year project devoted to photographing and documenting traditional cultures around the world. Remarkably, this project made him realize the profound coincidences that define us as humans. In his words: “We come in a thousand different shapes and colors, but underneath that thin layer of skin, we’re far more similar than we are different. Even the most remote and isolated groups of people share the same basic kindness, the same intellectual curiosity, and the same empathy we’d expect from our next of kin.”

In his works the viewer can find a thoughtful moment — rather than the traditional, smiling-at-the-camera poses, his subjects are often in-studio backgrounds with stoic but genuine expressions. While his work in the studio seems to require more preparation, his work outdoors seems to be more spontaneous. In both situations, the photographer shows different creative results. Not everything has to be dramatic when it comes to black and white, and Paco’s images are a good example of this fact.

In the art of vandeCamp & Heesterbeek portrait, photography meets existentialism. By digital manipulation of photographs of ordinary people their existence is questioned. These ordinary people become alternative versions of themselves. Sometimes they become an esthetically enhanced version of themselves, sometimes they seem to dissolve in a black or white environment. In all cases, the works are highly associative. There is no one way to interpret them. There is no one reality anymore. Most manipulations evolve by chance. Because Patricia van de Camp and Marc Heesterbeek always work separately, their studios are in a different part of the Netherlands, and they send the photographs back and forth via a web link, they often misinterpret each other’s intentions. In this way, the images start to have a life of their own. Patricia van de Camp (1969) studied graphic Art and photography at the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and the Design School SDU Kolding in Denmark. Dawid Planeta is a conceptual photographer and illustrator from Poland. He came to this realization while working on “Mini People”, his most recent series. It made him realize the power of art and creation. All of this was thanks to an unpleasant circumstance: he faced 'the black dog’ - depression. It’s not an easy condition to deal with. When one's depressed, nothing seems to have a purpose. Nothing is exciting. Decided to change this, art became his way out.

Dariusz Klimczak (1967, Sieradz, Poland) is a photographer for more than 30 years. Dariusz creates surreal montages based on his own photos. He prefers b&w squares but also uses colour. In his works he uses symbols and archetypes, to provoke the viewer to think or smile. His private ambition is to create a kind of visual esperanto, which would be understood all over the world.

He tried to stop thinking about depression as a weakness and turn it into something brilliant. He started creating dark, mysterious, and frightening images originating deep inside his mind. The recurring motif in his work is a small human figure lost in a dark jungle, facing huge creatures. Working on them and contemplating the final effect helped him grow his awareness of who he is and what he’s afraid of. It helped him see his emotions and confront them. It helped him get out of the jungle.

An author of 25 individual exhibitions. A composer and a producer of the album "Frimagination" by Climax Indigo. Author of 2 books of aphorisms (Aforyzjaki, Klocki ego). NADINE KOUPAEI SPAIN

www.nadinekoupaei.com

“Right now I feel like getting a walking stick. I want to feel my feet lifting and setting back down after every turn, hear each and every thump they make. Then, I want to trace the contours of all the impressions they’ve made, or at least all the ones I can see.”

39

Nadine is a young all-around creative currently based in Mallorca, Spain. Born into a Bulgarian-Iranian family and raised between Germany, Dubai, and Spain, she developed an early capacity to communicate with a wide range of communities. To her, photography is a way to highlight certain aspects of her experiences rather than a way to interpret the world around her. Her work is usually characterized by an intimate connection with her subject matter, which is why sometimes she also combines poetry with her visuals. She has worked as a fashion photographer, as well as with different artists in the music industry, and has been featured in magazines such as California Style, Indie, Whitewall Magazine, among others. At the moment she is producing her first formal independent project.

Pauline’s main inspiration comes from children's literature and her love for painting and drawing. By presenting a universe that is both youthful and fresh - but also very rigorous and precise - Pauline perceives how to intelligently combine these two passions and present visuals halfway between photography and drawing.

“I tend to see the history of art as an index from which I can borrow, depending on what’s going on in contemporary life. At the moment I’m focusing on the Regency era and the birth of the British empire, a period of time that spawned a huge amount of self-congratulatory portraiture which now lines the walls of our museums and institutions... Britain is obsessed with its own history and how influential we used to be; we view our history with rose-tinted glasses, lionising our perceived victories whilst overlooking our various misdemeanours. Nationalism has been stoked recently by representing the past as something we should be moving back to, often painting a distorted picture of a greatness that never was. In my current work, I take these confident Regency poses and subvert and disrupt them, taking a ‘strong and stable‘ part of my heritage and making it unsafe and tainted.”

TAIWAN

www.lochanpeng.com

Anthony Rondinone is an emerging American painter born and raised in the Bronx, New York. With no formal training, he primarily focuses on stylistic portraits and figurative works which are the culmination of memories from growing up in a poor immigrant community and his take on humanity and current events. Mainly conveying emotions from deja vu like melancholy to inner disgust, each piece has its own personality.

Lo Chan Peng made his debut in 2007 with the Strawberry Generation series which depicts people around him as the subjects. Since then his name has been closely linked to photorealism or hyperrealism. Thirteen years later, his passion for portraiture remains. People are Lo’s main subjects. As long as he needs people, he is constantly in demand of photographing people or searching for images of men for the familiar connection between the artist and his subjects.

Anthony is interested in self-reflection and connecting to emotions. Whether he's attempting to show the beauty in sadness or revealing the ugly side of humanity, he wants people to find themselves in his work and spark a personal confrontation. Each of Anthony's paintings is a snapshot of exactly how he feels in a moment; a page in a journal where he pours emotion and watches it take shape. This is his way of documenting life.

Lo Chan Peng applies the glazing technique on his latest Portraiture series, with Garden of Secrets as one of the major works. The canvas is almost hyperrealistic, with metaphoric and metonymic details, the dramatic compositions respond to the disciplined forms. Lo gradually detaches himself from the shallow appearances in order to seek for the mind-blowing truth and reality under the deceiving surface. One only needs to look deep into the sitter’s eyes to realize she is in fact the representation of the artist himself, looking at our past, present, and future.

Wanjin Gim is a Korean visual artist that creates wonderful surreal studies of the human anatomy. The prominent characteristics of his works are color and expressiveness. Transmitting such levels of emotion demands intensive work, but Wanjin is delighted by the process and believes the audience can perceive it. While it might appear that he focuses on expressions, he is primarily interested in the empty space surrounding characters. He works thinking on the harmony and balance between the human body and its environment. He explores how to turn a "target" into a "phenomenon" through the relationship between the figure and the margin. Wanjin not only uncovers the beauty of the human body, but he takes it to new dimensions with his boundless imagination. "The pure and clean true self is not far away. It has never been separated from myself for a moment, and from the beginning, it is shining brightly in its place."

This photograph is part of my Lake Geneva project started in 1995. It is a long-term work about the esthetic value of the man-made objects built on the shores of Lake Geneva in France and Switzerland. I have been photographing the lake for more than 20 years now. Living on the lakeshore, I must say that I have always been inspired by this large and beautiful 53

body of water season after season, year after year. Every single day, the magnificent combination of light and water tells a different story to those who take time to contemplate these striking sceneries. My approach consists of depicting a personal vision of these man-made structures built above the water. Over time, these structures deeply affect the perception of the landscape one can have. They gradually belong to the landscape until they are completely mingled. To me, this ‘unwitting esthetics’ of the man-made constructions contributes to the beauty and the uniqueness of Lake Geneva.

Humanopolis is a photographic project that aims to humanize the city. It shows the interconnection of a man with the city. Humanopolis uses the metamorphosis of the human body with the landscape of the city. The naked body of a man as a symbol stripped of all sexual, economic, racial, political, and social conditions. Humanopolis series recreate, reconstruct the city through the intervention of the naked body with the urban space. Man merges with space and matter with form. Crossing the skin as a human boundary and crossing the surface as an urban boundary. The limits of the body with the limits of the city to create a mind without limits and an open city. Our physical space with our mental space, from the intimate to the public, from the interior to the exterior. Body and space, skin, and stone. Man grows and the city with him according to its needs. GUS SPAIN

Thoughtful and contemplative, viewing Gus artworks is like a meditation. Gus is a Fine Art Photographer from Spain. The most unique aspect of his work is the variety. His artworks depict subjects that feel like they are fading in front of the viewer’s eye. The surreal quality of his work augments his technical ability and leads the viewers to a new appreciation of a place that might not exist. This imaginative world stood with equal weight as a reality – with its endless mystery and revelation. 59

Gus compassionate artworks are inspired by ideas he carries in his mind. He captures the essence of the transient nature of life. Most of Gus' works carry soft touches of color that give his creations a dreamlike quality. Combining a variety of photographic techniques, especially multiple and long exposure, the artist takes us into a magical journey into the depths of his imagination. Using an age-old natural technique, mixed with nowadays photographs, his images are multi-layered, simply executed, and visually delightful.

Living in a great city, he was naturally driven to street photography and depicting quotidian life in its simplest form. When he started in this field of photography, he worked according to the established standards of the style and at a certain point, he got bored of not being able to illustrate the mood of the “moment”. To give a more authentic touch to his work, audacious and greatly influenced by the early 20th-century pictorialist movement and artists such as Alfred Stieglitz, Robert Demachy, and Léonard Misonne, he began to process his imagery to make it a little more mysterious. This ended up in a unique "creative street photography" style, hence the name of his series "Quotidian Life".

Kathleen Greenwood views art not only as a form of self-expression but also as a means to provide a message about social issues and to evoke thoughts or emotions through images. Kathleen’s style is eclectic and her approach to transforming a blank canvas can be structured with a specific goal in mind or free-flowing with a lot of experimentation. Each design starts off with a base subject that gradually becomes more complex by adding layers, manipulating light and including a variety of elements. All of these actions help to enhance the main area of focus. A chain reaction occurs as each step that is taken leads to a set of sequential steps toward a predetermined vision or a vision that results from experimentation within the creative process. While at present she mainly focuses on digital art, she is a multifaceted artist that experiments with other techniques, including watercolor, pen and ink, and graphite. Kathleen’s inspiration comes from daily practice, nature, workshops, and fellow artists. Art for her continues to be a meandering path full of surprises and unpredictable outcomes.

It is located in the province of Cáceres, in the region of Extremadura in Spain. It is the place where all my family is and ancestors existed. Far from showing the perceptible appearance of Deleitosa or some of the visual references linked to what was a photographic icon of the social and economic backwardness in Spanish rural society, my gaze has some subjective nuances linked to a series of experiences, places, and memories. Reminiscences that have endured as apparitions in my memory. Images that intermingle episodes that float in the collective imagination with the new realities that coexist in the village. There is an emotional need to reflect on the territory of which we are part. This motif is explored in its various aesthetic and inner aspects. The light, the mood, the atmosphere, and the feelings or memories that the motif evokes, also play a decisive role. The contours blur and the subject are not reproduced in a detailed representation of reality. What remains is a reduced and individual reproduction of the experienced nature and an impression of it. The title "LÜM" (Rhaeto-Romanic Light), depicts light as crucial in optical perception. It reveals the perceived landscape sometimes in contrast, sometimes only gently and not always in a clear way, but it is essential for our perception, which always remains individual.

The town appealed to him as much as in his memory of Steve McQueen’s classic film Bullitt, which he had seen a few years before. Above all, Stephane was fascinated by urban graffiti. 77

Back in Paris a “bad guy” named burnout ingratiated itself into Stephane’s professional existence. Nothing made sense to him anymore. He even pawned his favorite camera! After months and months of “nothingness”, his horizon opened up again to the beauty of lines, curves and people. Even black and white photography, which he used to find dull in the first place, became a most stimulating means of expression for him. Every shot, either in monochrome or color, made him feel alive again, while the urge to share his experience continued to grow. Stephane’s project combines his explorations into the beauty of graphic photography with his quest for beauty that is true to life, with all its contrast and ephemeral emotions.

His work has taken Lee to a number of different paths, and this allowed him to make relationships and connections with people from all walks of life. Everywhere he has gone, his camera has served as a literal and figural lens, through which he accesses the world around him. At first, Lee engaged with black and white imagery, and he connected with tonal contrast. From there, he began to explore narrative and storytelling. Photographs need to be about the subject, without the subject, the photograph cannot exist and everything else is merely a bonus. This is how Lee's mission is to capture stories, doubts, dreams, and feats. Lee uses photography to give his subjects a voice. Everybody has a story to tell, and if he can play a role in helping someone share it, so be it.

The Girl in The Glass

STÉPHANE NAVAILLES FRANCE

www.instagram.com/stephane_navailles

French artist Stéphane Navailles has been practicing photography since 1993, the year when he discovered San Francisco, its tramcars and hip hop culture.

Mixing light, perspective and color he provides a feeling of luminosity and genuine sense of atmosphere. With a unique geometric style and the use of striking colors, he simplifies, distorts, and exaggerates reality to give alternative meanings to his subjects. Dedicated to a greater understanding of nature and the human condition, Orlando’s practice is to use landscapes as vehicles to engage with the contemporary discourse of art. He’s driven by ideas related to philosophical themes and intrigue through the understanding of human nature. With concepts like introspection and retrospection, his artistic motivation is particularly concerned with transmitting messages about human needs, desires, emotions, motivations and self actualization. In his paintings the ethereal and the geometrical collapse, allowing space for them both to coexist. His depictions of inert spaces suggest we should examine ourselves if we seek to improve our human condition. His works endeavor to motivate the audience to explore their inner-selves in order to reach personal fulfillment.

The dark background, from which the figures emerge, suggests intimacy, the personal life hidden from the public view. Complementary to it, the bright white light, similar to that in operating rooms, exposes the inner intimate life of our emotions to be dissected by others.

Using digital manipulation Sarah makes us believe that magic can exist, that fantasy and reality can merge, and that we are only limited by our own imagination.

Constanza Silva Rosales is an artist from Santiago de Chile who explores the world of symbols, mythology, and dreams that bring to life images with a surrealist aesthetic. Her process is different with each image. Constanza's images often feature her in the frame, interacting with the environment in an imaginative way. Being the creator and the main character, Constanza investigates the subconscious and translates it into compositions that oscillate between the personal world and the collective unconscious, making the creativity of her work original.
