THE EXHIBITION
The exhibition features a selection of original photographs by "the greatest paparazzo of the world, Ron Galella. Some action sequences realized during his long career of assault photographer, add up to a long series of stolen portraits by Ron Galella from the celebrities of the international star-system of the Seventies and the Eighties in New York and Los Angeles. All of the photographic works exhibited, which come straight from Ron Galella's archive in Montville, New Jersey, are unique vintage prints. Each photo displays as caption an original press release of the days following the scoop. Marlon Brando, Jackie Kennedy, Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, Maria Callas are just a few of the celebrities photographed by Galella in the most unexpected moments, in the search of the "street truth, contributing to the definition and glamour of some icons of cinema, music, art and show business. The artworks in the exhibition, about 30 among action sequences and portraits, are mounted on acid free museum passepartout in black painted wooden frames.
BIOGRAPHY
Photography by Paul Schmulbach/©Ron Galella
Ron Galella was born in Januay 1931 in Hoboken New Jersey; after struggling to find the right job related to Art, Galella joined the Air Force and became a Camera repair officer. In the 50’s and 60’s he refined his skills as a freelance reporter becoming a printing lab technician. His career had a hit in the late sixties with bestselling scoops featuring Hollywood megastars like Sinatra, Cher, Taylor, Loren. Although his photography icon was Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Galella was on every cover and soon became the most popular American paparazzo. He was willing to do almost anything and although he was a notoriously pesky photographer, he helped to create icons, to redefine glamour and to launch the age of modern celebrity. “Bandit”, “Hound”, Ron Galella has been called in a lot of ways. From his notoriously obsessive treatment of Jackie Onassis and the subsequent legal battles associated with it, to his alarmingly beautiful photographs of celebrities in the 60s and 70s, Galella has always been in a category of his own. Possessed of a unique talent to catch stars at moments when they seemed most alive, most human, most stylish, Galella was able to do something no other celebrity watcher was able to do: to become a star himself. Featuring images of Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Cher, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Mick Jagger and many more, Photology is the only gallery in Italy to represent the Galella’s vintage prints with the original hand-typed caption and exhibited his works since 2003 with the show and the catalogue Ron Galella, Exclusive diary in 2004. He now lives and works in New Jersey.

What is generally known about the so called “street photography”
has
nothing
to
do
with
the
“street
photographs” by Ron Galella. Like an army officer he plans his action strategy: he sees the street like a battlefield, with mined areas, barriers to jump and enemies to shoot. His bypassing system features special outfits, hideaways, fake documents, enticements, screening actions. Photography becomes an urban guerrilla, everything is made for a simple scoop: another “dirty dozen” of characters to be added to his private photoarchive. When Jackie Kennedy sued him for stalking and invasion of privacy, Galella could never imagine the quantity of journalists - and the amount of press - who pleaded him morally guilty and pointed him as an executioner, a maleficent photographer, the same way as a nazi officer. But like a tough self-made guy he did not negotiate with the court, he paid for his offense and had to remain 50 yards away from Jackie (like the court ruling imposed him) for the rest of his career. In Galella Montville New Jersey headquarter, like in a Pentagon archive, there are still traces and top secret documents of actions and targets; for Ron Galella there is an endless work of notes and mapping territories. Streets, corners, blocks, lobbies, condos, are the performing stages of the greatest American paparazzo who, by his own admission, was inspired by a group of roman photographers from the fifties whose style became synonymous with “la dolce vita”.

A special section of this diary is dedicated to Jackie Kennedy Onassis, “his most wonderful obsession”. Throughout the Seventies and the Eighties Galella kept portraying people who were either unaware, posing, fleeing, in love or annoyed by his presence. Every picture features a caption (often ironic) describing in detail facts and people behind each photography.

Screening: every Sunday (from January 10th to February 28th) at 8.30 pm. The exhibiting space of Photology set in Garz贸n, geographical area of agribusiness products such as oil, wine and fruit, is an oasis of peace and tranquility. The charming garden of the gallery will frame a special installation of art books and, precisely, a space dedicated to the APERITIVO ITALIANO. Every evening between 7 pm and 9 pm visitors will taste quality wines paired with a platter of italian cold cuts served with tigelle (typical bread of the modenese area). The guests and visitors will be able to relax in the outside lobby of the gallery, sipping their favorite wine, browsing through books and catalogues available for the occasion. The gallery staff will also be available for guided tours of the exhibition throughout the time of the aperitif.
