Fuerte, bravío, impredecible e inclemente. Así es "El espíritu del viento del sur". Un viento que por siglos ha puesto a prueba a innumerables aventureros.

Quienes fueron capaces de enfrentarlo, pudieron conocer parte de los misterios que aun encierra este hermoso rincón del planeta.

La mayoría de los que embarcaron desde tierras lejanas no lo consiguieron, sin embargo, los vencedores tuvieron la oportunidad de dar a conocer al resto del mundo la belleza inhóspita de estos parajes y el coraje de los habitantes del llamado "fin del Mundo".

Strong, fierce, unpredictable and inclement. These are just some words to describe “the spirit of the southern wind”. For centuries this wind has put innumerable adventurers to the test and only those capable of confronting the wind were able to learn a little about the mysteries that are still hidden in this beautiful corner of the planet.

The majority of those explorers who set off from distant lands were unsuccessful in their attempts.

However those who succeeded were able to tell the rest of the world about the inhospitable beauty of these places and the courage of the inhabitants who lived at the so-called “end of the world.”

Prólogo

os magallánicos estamos convencidos de que nuestro territorio –tierras, mares, cielos- conforma una expresión singular en la inmensidad del globo por su geografía bravía, su esplendor natural y por su historia. Razones nos sobran para ello: desde hace casi cinco siglos se acumulan las descripciones de descubridores, exploradores, viajeros y estudiosos que de variada manera y distinto énfasis dan cuenta de los sentimientos que en ellos provocó el enfrentamiento con un mundo natural mezcla del caos primigenio y de la pristinidad original de la Creación; de sus expresiones ambientales y sus formas vitales y de la fuerza impresionante de sus paisajes. De éstos, en particular, la técnica fotográfica desde un siglo y cuarto hasta hoy hizo posible captar sus particularidades y su belleza o grandiosidad y difundirlos por lo ancho del mundo. Acerca de lo que ha sido su acontecer humano desde doce milenios atrás hasta nuestros días, se han encargado de investigar y dar a conocer algunos historiadores poniendo de relieve el pionerismo caracterizador de la presencia humana a lo largo del tiempo, porque vivir en el meridión ha tenido mucho de desafío.

De todo esto informa el contenido de la obra que el lector tiene entre sus manos, a través de un texto sencillo, veraz y ameno y de imágenes espléndidas que trasuntan la fuerza de la naturaleza. En una asociación feliz y fecunda Luis Bertea en las fotografías y Denis Chevallay en la relación geográfico-histórica, con la colaboración de Andrea Espinoza en la forma literaria y de Nancy Luna en el diseño, han realizado un trabajo bibliográfico muy bien logrado atendidos los fines que lo han motivado y esplendido en su presentación. No menos laudable es su decisión de hacer de las secciones centrooccidental del estrecho de Magallanes, de los canales fueguinos y del islario del Cabo de Hornos los ejes geográficos conductores de un recorrido ciertamente singular, grato para la vista y el espíritu. Hacia

falta una obra especializada que tuviera esa orientación diferente y lograrlo tan bien es un valuable acierto.

El libro ha sido hecho directamente para el uso turístico, que ahí además su carácter bilingüe, y no nos cabe duda de que será de gran utilidad como guía ilustrativa e informativa de viajeros, tanto en un recorrido real como imaginario.

Enfrentarse con la naturaleza bravía del centro-oeste de la Patagonia Austral, del occidente y sur de la Tierra del Fuego, con la suficiente información sin duda que contribuirá al mejor disfrute de cuantos intenten la siempre gratificante aventura del conocimiento geográfico, en particular cuando el mismo se refiere a uno de los territorios extremos del planeta.

Prologue

he people of Magallanes are convinced that our territory- the land, seas and skies- is unique in the immensity of the globe for its wild geography, the natural splendour and for its history. We have countless reasons for this belief as we have been accumulating descriptions over more than five centuries from discoverers, explorers, travellers and men of learning. In their varied ways and with their different emphases they produced accounts of the feelings that were provoked in them by the confrontation with a natural world that is a mix of the primordial chaos and the original pristine nature of Creation. These accounts are records of the environmental expressions, the vital forms and the impressive force of the landscapes. The photographic technique in particular, from 125 years ago to the present, has allowed visitors to capture the territory’s peculiarities, its beauty and greatness and these pictures have been seen all over the world. Historians have been charged with investigating and shedding light on human events in this land dating from 12,000 years ago to the present day. They have emphasized the pioneering nature that has characterized the human presence throughout time because living in the south has been a constant challenge.

All of this informs the content of the work you now hold in your hands with a text that is simple, truthful and entertaining which is accompanied by splendid images that faithfully represent the force of nature. The happy and fruitful association of Luis Bertea with his photographs, Denis Chevallay with his geographical and historical accounts, the literary collaboration of Andrea Espinoza and the design of Nancy Luna has produced a bibliographical work of superb presentation which has achieved all the aims which motivated its publication. No less praiseworthy is the decision to make the sections for the west-central part of the Strait of Magellan, the Fuegian channels and the islands of Cape Horn the geographical axis of a journey which is most certainly very exceptional and pleasurable both to the eye and for the spirit. There

has been a need for a specialized work such as this which has a different orientation and accomplishing it so well is a real success.

This book has been published for tourists, hence its bilingual nature, and there is no doubt that it will be very useful as an illustrative and informative guide for those travellers who are on an actual trip to these areas as well as those on a purely imaginary one.

To be able to confront the wildness of the mid-western part of Southern Patagonia and the western and southern parts of Tierra del Fuego with ample information will, without a doubt, contribute to the greater enjoyment of those who attempt the always rewarding adventure of geographical discovery, in particular when this same adventure involves one of the most extreme territories of the planet.

Nunca más se supo de ellos y en base a este hecho, nace la leyenda de la Ciudad de los Cesares.

1540 Spanish expedition of the Bishop of Plasencia, led by Francisco de la Ribera and the Camargo brothers. The flagship was shipwrecked in the Strait (Possession Bay) but 192 men survived and managed to reach land. Nothing more was ever heard of these men and the legend of the city of Cesares grew out of this event.

1578 El corsario inglés Francis Drake cruza el estrecho de Magallanes .

Saliendo hacia el Pacífico, deriva hacia al Sudeste hasta constatar que Tierra del Fuego era una isla que no seguía hasta el Polo Sur, como se creía entonces.

Luego, saquea las colonias españolas de Chile y Perú antes de volver a Inglaterra en 1580, habiendo realizado la segunda circunnavegación de la historia.

1578 The English buccaneer Francis Drake passes through the Strait of Magellan. After reaching the Pacific Ocean he headed south east and was able to ascertain that Tierra del Fuego is an island and does not, as was previously thought, continue to the South Pole. He possibly reached Cape Horn although this cannot be proven. Next he plundered the Spanish colonies of Chile and Peru before returning to England having completed the second circumnavigation of the world.

Detailed work is carried out on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan. These surveys form the base for the modern and precise knowledge of this part of the world.

El estrecho de Magallanes, que llamaremos en adelante “el Estrecho”, se sitúa entre los paralelos 52 y 54º sur y 68 y 75º de longitud oeste.

Su caprichoso curso tiene una longitud de unos 560 km. y su ancho varía entre 27 y 4 km.

The Strait of Magellan, henceforth called “the Strait” is situated between the latitudes 52° and 54° S and between 68° and 75° longitude west. Its erratic course runs for some 560 km and it varies between 27 and 4 km in width.

Geológicamente hablando, es apenas un recién nacido. Hace 20 mil años, una capa de hielo de unos 1.500 m. de espesor lo cubría casi totalmente. Pero entre 15 y 10 mil años atrás, el clima de la región fue haciéndose cada vez más cálido y el hielo empezó a derretirse.

Producto de esto comenzaron a aparecer grandes grietas que con el tiempo dejaron sólo algunas uniones entre el continente y la futura isla grande de Tierra del Fuego.

Geographically speaking it is a relative “new born”, having been formed 20 thousand years ago when an ice sheet, some 1500m thick, completely covered the area. Between 10 and 15 thousand years ago the climate of the region started to slowly get warmer and thus the ice began to melt. As a result of this, large cracks began to appear that over time left only a few places uniting the continent with what was to become the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego.

Cuando las uniones desaparecieron por completo y el espacio liberado por los hielos fue invadido por el mar, los grupos de cazadores que se encontraban al sur del Estrecho quedaron aislados para siempre, dando origen a las etnias conocidas miles de años más tarde como los Selk’nam (Onas) y los Manekenk (Haush).

When these unions disappeared completely and the areas opened up by the ice were invaded by the sea, the groups of hunters that were found in the south of the Strait remained isolated forever, giving rise to the ethnic groups known thousands of years later as Selk´nam and Manekenk.

Por la amplitud de las tierras y aguas que rodean el Estrecho, no es de extrañar que varios grupos humanos hubiesen ocupado este territorio en cuanto las condiciones climáticas y geográficas lo permitieron. Dichos grupos se dividieron en las siguientes etnias:

Considering the extent of the land and waters that surround the Strait, it is not surprising that various groups of humans have occupied this territory in so far as the climatic and geographic conditions have permitted. These groups divide into the following ethnic groups:

• Los Aonikenk: grupo austral perteneciente a la gran familia de los Tehuelches que habitaba al norte del Estrecho, sobre el continente. La introducción del caballo en América por los españoles provocó un cambio significativo en el comportamiento de este pueblo indígena, haciendo que los Aonikenk adoptaran su uso cotidiano desde el siglo XVII. • Los Selk’nam, igualmente conocidos como Onas, que ocupaban gran parte de la isla grande de Tierra del Fuego.

Ambas tribus eran nómades terrestres. Se desplazaban según la disponibilidad de alimentos y eran grandes cazadores de guanacos, ñandúes, aves y roedores.

• Los Kawésqar, conocidos también como Alacalufes, vivían en las aguas y costas del Estrecho y en los canales occidentales de la Patagonia que dan hacia el océano Pacífico.

Este pueblo también era nómade, cazador y recolector, pero marítimo. Instalaba sus campamentos siempre cerca de la costa y se desplazaba en canoa. Su alimentación se basaba en la caza de mamíferos marinos, peces y aves que encontraban en o cerca del mar, además de algunos animales terrestres como el huemul.

• Los Yaganes (Yámanas) y los Manekenk (Haush), fueron tribus fueguinas que vivían al sur de Tierra del Fuego, lejos de las aguas del estrecho de Magallanes.

• The Aonikenk: a southerly group belonging to the great family of the Tehuelches who inhabited the continental area to the north of the Strait.

The introduction of the horse into America by the Spanish produced a significant change in the behavior of the indigenous peoples and the Aonikenk adopted them for daily use from the 17th century.

• The Selk'nam, also known as Onas, who occupied a large part of the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego.

Both tribes were terrestrial nomads. They moved around according to the availability of food and they were great hunters of guanacos, ñandues, birds and rodents.

• The Kawéskar, also known as Alacalufes, lived on the waters and coasts of the Strait and in the western channels of Patagonia that flow into the Pacific Ocean. This group was also nomadic; hunters and gatherers but maritime. They always set up their camps close to the coast and traveled around by canoe. They hunted the marines mammals, fish and birds that they found in, or close to, the sea, as well as some land animals such as the huemul (Chilean deer).

Estos pueblos presentes en la Patagonia desde hace miles de años desaparecieron casi por completo a principio del siglo XX, al ser víctimas de la invasión de los europeos a partir de

la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Con ello, no sólo desaparecieron miles de personas, sino que también se perdió gran parte de sus lenguas, culturas y conocimientos ancestrales sobre la región y su riqueza natural. Hoy sobreviven un centenar de descendientes de Kawésqars, entre Puerto Edén y Punta Arenas, y un número similar de Yaganes en Puerto Williams, todos prácticamente mestizados.

• The Yaganes (Yámanas) and the Manekenk (Haush) were the two Fuegian tribes and they lived in the south of Tierra del Fuego, far from the waters of the Strait of Magellan.

These ethnic groups survived in Patagonia for many thousands of year but they had almost completely disappeared by the beginning of the 20th century having fallen victim to the invasion of Europeans which started around the middle of the 19th century. Not only thousands of people disappeared but a large part of their languages, cultures and ancestral knowledge about the region and its natural riches was also lost. Today there are only a hundred or so surviving descendants of the Kaweskar who live between Puerto Eden and Punta Arenas and a similar number of Yágans in Puerto Williams.

Magallanes y el hallazgo del Estrecho El descubrimiento del estrecho de Magallanes tuvo su origen en el gusto de los europeos por las especies, es decir, por la canela, la nuez moscada, los clavos de olor y la pimienta. Desde el siglo XIII los europeos las obtuvieron desde las islas Molucas, situadas entre Indonesia y Filipinas, conocidas entonces como las “islas de las especies”. Estos codiciados productos debían recorrer un largo viaje por mar y tierra, pasando por intermediarios chinos, hindúes, árabes y comerciantes genoveses o venecianos, lo que explica los precios exorbitantes que alcanzaron las especies en Europa y las enormes ganancias que dejó este negocio.

Magellan and the discovery of the Strait The discovery of the Strait of Magellan originated in the European love of spices; cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and pepper. From the 13th century onwards the Europeans obtained these from the Molucca Islands, situated between Indonesia and the Philippines, which were at the time known as the “Spice Islands”. These coveted spices had to travel a long way by land and sea passing through the hands of Chinese, Indian and Arab intermediaries as well as Genoese or Venetian merchants which explained the exorbitant prices these spices demanded in Europe and the enormous profits that could be made in this trade.

Con el descubrimiento por Vasco de Gama de la “ruta de las Indias”, que pasaba por el cabo de Buena Esperanza, se estableció el monopolio portugués (1498). Con ello, la directa y marítima “ruta de las especies” se cerró para España.

Esta ruta la había navegado en 1505 un marinero portugués llamado Fernão de Magalhães. Sus conocimientos en astronomía y cartografía, además de la información que circulaba en ese tiempo entre marineros y cartógrafos, despertaron en él la sospecha que al sur de América se encontraba un paso que permitía llegar a las islas Molucas por el oeste.

Con el tiempo, su sospecha se transformó en una certeza tal que buscó interesar al rey Manuel de Portugal en el proyecto de armar una flota para descubrir la nueva ruta, pero el Rey no acogió esta audaz idea.

In 1498 with Vasco de Gama´s discovery of the Indian Route which sailed round the Cape of Good Hope a Portuguese monopoly was established which meant that the direct, maritime “spice route” was effectively closed off to Spain.

This route had been navigated in 1505 by a Portuguese sailor called Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan). His knowledge in astronomy and cartography as well as the information that circulated at the time amongst sailors and cartographers awoke in him the suspicion that in the south of America there was a passage that would allow access to the Molucca Islands from the west. Over time his suspicion grew into such a certainty that he tried to involve Manuel, the King of Portugal, in a project to put together a fleet to discover the new route but the king was uninterested in this daring idea.

This passenger was the Italian Antonio Pigafetta and he proved to be of major historical importance when on his return he wrote a detailed narrative about the trip carried out by Magellan.

Tres meses después de su partida desde España, la flota de Magallanes dejó las costas brasileñas para viajar hacia el sur por aguas muy poco conocidas hasta entonces. Cada entrada de mar hacia el interior del continente fue cuidadosamente explorada y en abril 1520, Magallanes decidió invernar en la bahía de San Julián (hoy en la Patagonia argentina).

Three months after their departure from Spain the fleet of Magellan left the Brazilian coast to travel southwards through, what were at the time, relatively unknown waters. Every inlet heading inland to the mainland was carefully explored and in April 1520 Magellan decided to winter in the Bay of San Julian (nowadays part of Argentine Patagonia).

En este lugar ocurrió el primer contacto entre europeos y patagones, descrito por Pigafetta de la siguiente manera: “Transcurrieron dos meses antes de que avistásemos a ninguno de los habitantes del país. Un día en que menos lo esperábamos se nos presentó un hombre de estatura gigantesca. Estaba en la playa casi desnudo, cantando y danzando al mismo tiempo y echándose arena sobre la cabeza.

El comandante envió a tierra a uno de los marineros con orden de que hiciese las mismas demostraciones en señal de amistad y de paz.

Este hombre era tan alto que con la cabeza apenas le llegábamos a la cintura. Era bien formado, con el rostro ancho y teñido de rojo, con los ojos circulados de amarillo, y con dos manchas en forma de corazón en las mejillas. Su vestido, o mejor, su capa, era de pieles cocidas entre sí, de un animal que abunda en el país. Este animal tiene la cabeza y las orejas de una mula, el cuerpo de camello, las piernas del ciervo y la cola del caballo, cuyo relincho imita. Nuestro capitán dio a este pueblo el nombre de Patagones”.

It was in this bay that the first contact between Patagonians and Europeans occurred and the meeting was described by Pigafetta in the following way.

“Two months passed before we saw any inhabitant of the country. One day when we were least expecting it a man of gigantic proportions presented himself. He was on the beach almost naked, singing and dancing and at the same time throwing sand around his head.

The captain sent a sailor to land with the orders to behave in the same way as the man as a sign of friendliness and peace. This man was so tall that our heads barely reached his waist. He was well built with a wide face painted red with his eyes circled in yellow and with two heart shaped marks on his cheeks. His dress, or rather cape, was made from the sewn-together skins of an animal which is particularly abundant in this country. This animal has the ears and head of a mule, the body of a camel, the legs of a deer and the tail of a horse whose neigh it imitates. Our captain named this place Patagones”.

This narrative sees the birth of the myth of the gigantic Patagones: a myth which lasted various centuries. Likewise it includes the first description of the guanaco and above all records the entry of the name Patagones into history from which the term Patagonia derives. The origin of this word is uncertain, but there are three theories with regard to it. The first alludes to the large feet of these pseudo-giants. The second refers to their rough and

This book, called Primaleon, was written anonymously and published for the first time in 1512. In it the hero captures a giant called Patagon on a remote island.

The wintering over in San Julian lasted 6 months and was very tough for the fleet. There were shortages and acts of indiscipline which resulted in Magellan condemning to death two officials and abandoning a third on land. During a reconnaissance to the south the Santiago was shipwrecked at the mouth of the River Santa Cruz which was the first maritime disaster registered in Patagonian waters. The spirit and motivation of the fleet reached an all time low but Magellan continued with his obsession of discovering the pass.

La invernada en San Julián duró unos seis meses y fue muy dura para la flota. Hubo penurias y actos de indisciplina, a tal punto que Magallanes condenó a muerte a dos oficiales y abandonó a un tercero en tierra. Durante un reconocimiento hacia el sur, el buque Santiago naufragó en la desembocadura del río Santa Cruz, siendo éste el primer desastre marítimo conocido en aguas patagónicas. El

ánimo y la motivación de la flota llegó a su nivel más bajo, pero Magallanes siguió con su obsesión: descubrir el paso.

Finalmente, el 21 de octubre de 1520 se detectó un cabo y una entrada de mar hacia el oeste. Magallanes envió dos naves a explorar dicha entrada, las que regresaron con la tan anhelada noticia de que ese curso de agua seguía hacia el oeste. Dicha información fue conocida por el portugués el 1º de noviembre, razón por la que bautizó el estrecho descubierto como “Estrecho de Todos los Santos”. Años después los geógrafos lo nombraron definitivamente - y con justicia - como “de Magallanes”. Durante esos días, la flota observó varias fogatas en la costa sur, señales de la presencia de campamentos indígenas. Magallanes bautizó entonces esta tierra como “Tierra de los Fuegos”, nombre que se transformó con el tiempo en “Tierra del Fuego”.

Luego que la "San Antonio", desertara y regresara a España, los tres barcos restantes de la flota de las Molucas alcanzaron con bastante rapidez el final del Estrecho (en el cabo bautizado “Deseado”) y se abrió frente a los expedicionarios, ese 28 de noviembre de 1520, un gran océano de aguas muy tranquilas, que Magallanes denominó “Pacífico”.

Pero la extraordinaria odisea de Magallanes y sus hombres no terminó allí. Después de cruzar el océano Pacífico con innumerables dificultades, debido a la falta de víveres y los consiguientes estragos del escorbuto, la flota tocó por fin tierra firme en marzo de 1521, primero en la isla Guam (archipiélago de las islas Marianas) y luego en una isla de las Filipinas donde los sobrevivientes pudieron recomponer sus fuerzas.

Finally on the 21 October, 1520 a headland was sighted and beyond it a sea inlet leading towards the west. Magellan sent two boats to explore the inlet and it returned with the longed for news that the water course continued towards the west. This information was communicated to Magellan on the 1 November for which reason he baptized the discovered strait as the“Estrecho de Todos los Santos” the Strait of All Saints. Years later geographers renamed it, definitively and rightly so, with the name of

Magellan himself. During the next few days the fleet observed various fires along the southern coastline, signs of the presence of indigenous camps.

Magellan named this land the Land of the Fires which later changed into Land of Fire (Tierra del Fuego).

En septiembre 1522, sólo uno de los barcos de la flota de las Molucas, la bien llamada "Victoria", llegó de vuelta a España en manos de El Cano junto a 18 hombres famélicos, de los 234 que habrían partido tres años antes. Estos hombres realizaron la primera circunnavegación del globo, y para sorpresa de Sebastián El Cano, su bitácora marcaba un día antes del indicado por el calendario.

After the San Antonio deserted and returned to Spain the three remaining boats of the Moluccas fleet rapidly reached the end of the strait on the 28 November 1520. They named the headland Cape Deseado (Desired) and there stretching out in front of them was a great ocean of tranquil waters which Magellan named the Pacific.

La expedición de Magallanes no descubrió que la tierra era redonda, como se ha escrito muchas veces. Este hecho era conocido desde la civilización griega. Pero sí forzó a los partidarios de una tierra plana a aceptar definitivamente la forma circular de nuestro planeta. Pero sin dudas, el legado más grande de Magallanes fue revelar a los geógrafos y cosmógrafos que las distancias entre los continentes y, por ende, de los océanos, era mucho mayor de lo que se pensaba. De esta manera se abrió un largo proceso en pos de revisar por completo la visión del mundo heredada de Ptolomeo. En este sentido, los efectos del viaje de Magallanes fueron realmente revolucionarios.

El descubrimiento del Estrecho y del cabo de Hornos cien años más tarde, abrieron rutas que permitieron un aumento en el comercio y en las comunicaciones mundiales impensable para la época.

However the extraordinary odyssey of Magellan and his men did not end there. After crossing the Pacific Ocean with innumerable difficulties owing to the lack of provisions and the consequent ravages caused by scurvy, the fleet at last reached terra firma in March 1521. Firstly they landed on the Island of Guam (part of the archipelago of the Marianas Islands) and then they sailed to an island in the Philippines where the survivors were able to recover their strength.

A few months later Magellan was killed whilst covering the retreat of his men from a skirmish with locals on the Island of Mactan. Thus it was under the command of Sebastián El Cano that the three Spanish ships finally reached the Moluccas Islands in November 1521.

Cuando Magallanes, a principios de noviembre de 1520, pisó tierra en la bahía San Felipe de Tierra del Fuego, fue la primera vez que un europeo vio y tocó su (futuro) suelo nacional, 16 años antes que el conquistador español Diego de Almagro, bajando hacia el sur desde Perú, encontrará una tierra que llamó Chile.

Nearly a year later in September 1522 just one of the boats belonging to the fleet of the Moluccas made it back to Spain. The aptly named Victoria, captained by El Cano, returned with only 17 famished men out of the 234 that had set sail three years previously. These men had carried out the first circumnavigation of the world and to the surprise of Sebastian El Cano his logbook registered the day before that of the actual calendar.

The expedition of Magellan did not discover that the world was round as has been written many times before. This fact had been known since the Greek civilization. But the trip forced those who still believed that the

earth was flat to finally accept the circular shape of the planet. Undoubtedly the biggest legacy of Magellan was to reveal to the geographers and cosmologists of the time that the distances between the continents, and thus between the oceans, was much greater than had been previously thought. As a result there began a long process of revising completely the vision of the world inherited from Ptolemy. In this sense the effects of Magellan’s journey were truly revolutionary. The discovery of the Strait, and Cape Horn a hundred years later, opened new routes which allowed for an expansion in commerce and changed the world communications in a way that was unthinkable at that time.

Los seguidores de Magallanes en el Estrecho Durante esa época, el rey de España no quiso entrar en conflicto con Portugal respecto a las Molucas, ya que no se había decidido aún si eran de dominio luso o hispano. Por ello, es sólo en 1525 que una nueva flota de las Molucas con motivos puramente comerciales zarpó desde España bajo el mando de Francisco García Jofré de Loayza.

For Chile, a country that at the time did not exist, the discovery of the Strait marked a retrospective foundational milestone.

When Magellan landed in the Bay of San Felipe on Tierra del Fuego, at the beginning of November 1520, this was the first time that a European set foot on what was to become the (future) national soil of Chile. This event took place 16 years before the Spanish conquistador, Diego de Almagro, traveling south from Peru, founded a land that he named Chile.

Los cinco buques que la conformaron sufrieron todas las rudezas del clima magallánico a tal punto que demoraron cuatro meses en cruzar el Estrecho y en la odisea perdieron un barco. ¡La mala fama del estrecho de Magallanes tomaba forma! Además, llegando a las Molucas (con sólo dos barcos) se produjeron luchas con los portugueses, que derivaron en un fracaso comercial rotundo para la flota de Loayza.

As a conclusion to this significant page that Magellan wrote in the annals of humanity, and as an ironic aside for European egocentrism, it is worth mentioning a fact not often highlighted. The 18 survivors of the Moluccas fleet, who returned to Spain in 1522, are considered to be the first men to circle the globe but the first circumnavigator was actually the personal slave of Magellan, a native of Sumatra, who had been baptized with the Christian name of Henry. After the death of his master, Henry decided to abandon his fellow Spaniards and remain on one of the islands in the Philippines.

After Magellan At this time the King of Spain was unwilling to enter into a conflict with Portugal with respect to the Moluccas as it had not yet been decided if they were of Portuguese or Hispanic dominion. As a result it was only in 1525 that, under the command of Francisco García Jofré de Loayza, a new fleet set sail from Spain for the Moluccas with purely commercial objectives.

The five boats making up the fleet suffered the rigors of the Magellanic climate to such an extent that they took 4 months to cross the Strait and in the odyssey lost a boat. Thus the famed bad luck of the Magellan Strait began to take shape. When they finally arrived at the Moluccas (with only two boats) they then had to battle the Portuguese leading to a complete commercial failure for the fleet of Loayza.

En enero de 1540, los cuatro barcos de dicha expedición llegaron a la boca occidental del Estrecho, pero un temporal dispersó la flota.

Una de las naves naufragó sobre la costa continental patagónica, logrando llegar a tierra 150 soldados, 38 marineros y 3 mujeres casadas. Nunca más se supo de ellos. La historia de estos náufragos dio origen a una leyenda sobre la fundación de una ciudad escondida en la Patagonia. Con el tiempo fue conocida como la Ciudad de los Cesares; se decía que allí los edificios eran de oro y que sus habitantes habrían descubierto el secreto de la longevidad. Esta leyenda fue tan tenaz que hasta el siglo XIX, más de una expedición se internó en las montañas de estas australes tierras para descubrirla.

In fact the Spanish and Portuguese monarchies signed the Treaty of Zaragoza in 1529 stipulating that the Portuguese had dominion over the Moluccas which led to the Spanish losing interest in the Strait of Magellan route as a means of reaching the Spice Islands. Interest in the Strait thus became focused from then onwards on projects for colonizing the newly discovered territories although none of these schemes actually produced concrete results.

Durante 20 años, luego del descubrimiento del Estrecho por Magallanes, al menos cinco expediciones intentaron cruzarlo con 18 barcos. De ellos, solamente ocho lo lograron, pero sufrieron tantas dificultades que la ruta del Estrecho fue abandonada por años. Para la corona de España parecía menos arriesgado y más provechoso concentrarse en la explotación de sus colonias mexicanas y peruanas, grandes proveedoras de oro y plata, metales que viajaban por tierra entre el Pacífico y el Atlántico. De esta manera se evitaba lo único que ofrecían las regiones magallánicas: naufragios, proyectos fracasados y ventoleras.

From 1536 onwards the Strait once again began to regain its importance as it became the route though which the rich lands of Peru could be reached.

One expedition set up by the Bishop of Placencia, but commanded by his brother Francisco de Camargo, produced the legend that for centuries marked the history of Patagonia.

In January 1540 four boats from the aforementioned expedition reached the western entrance of the Strait but a storm dispersed the fleet. One of the boats was shipwrecked on the continental coast of Patagonia and 150 soldiers, 38 sailors and 3 married women managed to make it to land but nothing more was ever heard of them. The story of this shipwreck gave

rise to a legend about the foundation of a hidden city in Patagonia. Over time the city became known as the City of Cesares and it was said that the buildings there were of gold and that the inhabitants had discovered the secret of longevity. This legend was so durable that even until the 19th century more than one expedition set off into the mountains of these southern lands in an attempt to discover the city.

Después de varios intentos, una nave comandada por Hernando Gallego y que había zarpado desde la ciudad chilena de Concepción, logró no solamente atravesar el Estrecho desde el Pacífico hasta el Atlántico -por primera vez-, sino que además regresó por el mismo camino hasta su punto de partida. Este viaje efectuado en 1553 significó un adelanto para el conocimiento geográfico e hidrográfico del Estrecho.

During the twenty years subsequent to the discovery of the Strait at least 5 expeditions attempted to pass through the Strait in 18 ships. Of these only 8 ships survived but suffering such difficulties that the route was abandoned for years. For the Spanish crown it seemed to be less risky and more advantageous to concentrate on the exploitation of their Mexican and Peruvian colonies. These colonies supplied great quantities of gold and silver, which were then sent overland from the Pacific to the Atlantic. In this way it was possible to avoid all that the Strait seemed to offer: shipwrecks, failed projects and blasting winds.

Meanwhile to the north in Nueva Extremadura (or the Province of Chile) the governor, Pedro de Valdivia, planned to annex for the Spanish crown the lands lying between the central part of what is the current Chile and the Magellan Strait. As part of this plan various expeditions came down to the Strait from the north.

En 1557 salieron desde el puerto de Valdivia tres naves comandadas por Juan Ladrillero. Sólo una de ellas llegó al Estrecho y regresó al puerto desde donde había partido, más de un año y medio después. Ladrillero y sus hombres no sólo se internaron en el intricado laberinto de las costas del archipiélago patagónico oriental, sino que también exploraron el estrecho de Magallanes y sus canales adyacentes como nadie antes y tomaron posesión de su territorio en nombre del Gobernador de Chile (9 de agosto de 1558).

Algunos de los numerosos topónimos que dejó Ladrillero resumen bien las dificultades encontradas y superadas: seno Poca Esperanza, bahía Desengaño, fiordo Obstrucción, fiordo Última Esperanza… Pero el relato que dejó Ladrillero fue guardado por años en el archivo secreto de la Casa de Contratación española, por temor a que navegantes ingleses o franceses sacaran provecho de estos levantamientos. Más de 200 años pasaron para que los escritos de Ladrillero salieran a la luz, permitiendo su póstumo reconocimiento como uno de los más ilustres y valientes exploradores de los mares patagónicos.

After several attempts a ship commanded by Hernando Gallego, which had set sail from the Chilean town of Concepción, managed not only to sail through the Strait from the Pacific to the Atlantic for the first time but they also managed to return the same way back to their original starting point. This voyage was carried out in 1553 and signified a great step forward with regards to the gathering of geographical and hydrographical information about the Strait.

In 1557 three ships commanded by Juan Ladrillero left the port of Valdivia.

Only one of them managed to reach the Strait and return home more than a year and a half later. Ladrillero and his men did not only venture into the intricate coastal labyrinth of the western Patagonian archipelago. They also explored the Strait and its adjacent channels as had never been done before and they took

possession of its territory in the name of the governor of chile (9th august 1558) Some of the numerous place names that Ladrillero left sum up well the difficulties they faced and overcame: Little Hope Sound, Deception Bay, Obstruction Fjord, and Last Hope Sound....

But the account that Ladrillero left was kept for years in a secret archive in the Spanish Casa de Contratación for fear that English or French sailors would take advantage of these surveys.

More than 200 years passed before the writings of Ladrillero saw the light of day allowing for a posthumous recognition of him as one of the most illustrious and brave explorers of the Patagonian seas.

De esta manera, Drake dejó el puerto de Plymouth en diciembre de 1577 para empezar una odisea que duró tres años y que lo cubrió de gloria y riquezas. At the end of the 16th century, Tudor England, in spite of being officially at peace with Spain, commissioned Francis Drake with the task of exploring the Magellan Strait and the Terra Australis Incógnita (the unknown south land).

Francis Drake But behind these sensible and official intentions there was hidden an ulterior motive: to plunder the colonies and Spanish ships that were to be found on the west coast of America.

Thus Drake became a corsair, or rather a pirate, for the queen.

Next Drake traveled to the north through the Pacific sowing terror in the Spanish colonies of Chile and Peru that were unaccustomed to seeing English ships in their waters. He continued northwards until the latitude of Vancouver in search of the Northwest Passage to which he got very close. After a stay in California he crossed the Pacific to the Molucca Islands and returned to England in September 1580, laden with riches and receiving the highest honors. Thus Drake carried out the second circumnavigation of the world after Magellan, the first to be carried out by an Englishman.

Por esta razón, la máxima autoridad hispana en Perú encargó a Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa la misión de recorrer el Estrecho para perfeccionar los levantamientos hidrográficos (en esa época el derrotero de Ladrillero aún dormía en el archivo secreto de España), estudiar la posibilidad de fortificarlo, combatir a Drake en el caso de encontrarlo y, finalmente, viajar a España para rendir cuentas de su misión al Rey.

The tragedy of Sarmiento de Gamboa The exploits of Drake and all the havoc that he caused were a harsh blow for the security of the Spanish colonies and ships in the Pacific. The Strait of Magellan thus became the Achilles heel in the prosperity of the Viceroyalties of Peru and Chile.

Sarmiento zarpó con dos naves desde el puerto del Callao (Perú) en septiembre 1579. Luego de demorar semanas en encontrar la entrada al Estrecho, penetró en él cuatro meses después de su partida. Durante 34 días recorrió detalladamente las costas continentales y fueguinas del Estrecho, teniendo el primer contacto conocido entre europeos y los indígenas Selk’nam de Tierra del Fuego. Al llegar a España en agosto de 1580, Sarmiento recomendó al Rey fortificar y poblar el estrecho de Magallanes, con el fin de impedir el paso de piratas.

For this reason, the maximum authority in Peru charged Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa with various undertakings: to travel through the Strait perfecting the hydrographical surveys (at this time the account left by Ladrillero was still lying in the secret archive in Spain), to study the possibility of fortifying the Strait, to combat Drake (if encountered) and finally, to return to Spain to present an account of his mission to the king.

Sarmiento set sail with two ships from the Peruvian port of Callao in September 1579. After taking a few weeks to find the entrance to the Strait he then spent four months there. For 34 days he studied in detail the mainland coast and the Fuegian coast on the Strait and had the first known contact

between Europeans and the indigenous Selk'nam of Tierra del Fuego. Upon his arrival back in Spain in August 1580 Sarmiento recommended to the king to build a fort and to bring people to the straight Strait with the idea of impeding the passage of pirates.

La naturaleza se desencadenó desde el principio en contra de la imponente flota. En cuanto salió de su puerto de partida, un violento temporal redujo la flota a 19 naves. Luego vino un largo listado de desgracias: una travesía accidentada por el océano Atlántico, numerosos incidentes durante las recaladas en Brasil y en las costas patagónicas, además de un intento fallido de penetrar una primera vez en el Estrecho, seguido por un regreso forzoso a Brasil.

Finalmente, sólo cinco naves y 500 personas zarparon desde Brasil para ¡por fin! entrar en el estrecho de Magallanes en febrero de 1584, es decir, casi dos años y medio después de su salida de España.

Such was the hurry for Spain to counteract the English pirates, and thanks to the organizing capabilities of Sarmiento, it was only one year after the presentation of his account to the king that Sarmiento set sail from Spain heading to the Strait with an impressive fleet. There were 23 boats with 3000 people on board amongst them 350 colonists and 400 soldiers. This was the start of an expedition that transformed rapidly into an immense and tragic odyssey which is summarized in the following paragraphs.

Right from the very start nature unleashed itself against this imposing fleet.

Shortly after leaving their port of departure a violent storm reduced the fleet to 19 ships. Next followed a long list of misfortunes: an eventful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, numerous incidents during the dockings in Brazil and along the Patagonian coasts, a failed first attempt to enter the Strait, which was followed by a forced return to Brazil. Finally only 5 ships and 500 people set sail from Brazil reaching the Magellan Strait at last in February 1584: that is to say almost 2 ½ years after their departure from Spain.

Gracias al conocimiento que Sarmiento tenía de su primer viaje, fundó de inmediato en Punta Dungeness (entrada oriental del Estrecho) la Ciudad de Nombre Jesús, dejando alli unas 180 personas. El resto de la expedición se dirigió por mar y por tierra hacia el oeste para fundar la Ciudad del Rey Felipe, al sur de la actual Punta Arenas. Allí se construyeron tres edificios de piedra y una treintena de casas. Pero las duras condiciones climáticas de un invierno particularmente crudo y la falta de víveres empeoraron rápidamente la situación en ambas ciudades. De hecho, los habitantes de Nombre de Jesús mandaron por tierra hacia Rey Felipe a un grupo de 40 hombres en busca de ayuda, pero casi todos murieron de frío y hambre en el camino.

Thanks to the knowledge that Sarmiento had from his first voyage, they immediately founded the town of Ciudad de Nombre Jesús in Punta Dungeness (the eastern entrance to the strait) and left some 180 people there. The rest of the expedition headed by sea and over land towards the west to found the town of Ciudad del Rey Felipe to the south of the current location of Punta Arenas. Here they built three stone buildings and some thirty houses. But the harsh climatic conditions of a particularly bad winter and the lack of provisions rapidly worsened the situation in both of the towns. In fact the inhabitants of Jesús sent a group of 40 men to Rey Felipe in search of help but almost all died of cold and hunger on the way.

But in the Atlantic he was captured by some of his sworn enemies: English pirates.

Freed by Queen Elizabeth, Sarmiento headed overland back to his homeland but this time he was imprisoned in France and did not manage to recover his liberty until 1590, some 5 years after he had first tried to go to the rescue of the settlers of Nombre de Jesús. When he finally made it back to Spain, in spite of the efforts he made to get the king to provide a rescue expedition for the Strait, the court showed no interest in the colonists’ case.

Sarmiento died a few years later, most probably desperate at the indifference shown by the authorities when confronted by the drama being played out in far off Patagonia.

Whilst all this was going on the settlers of the two Magellanic towns died, practically all from hunger, cold, fatigue or in battles with the local indigenous peoples. It has been reliably proven that there were even cases of cannibalism.

The final act of this tragedy took place at the beginning of 1587 three years after the arrival of Sarmiento in these cruel lands when the 22 last remaining survivors attempted to cross over land to the Nombre de Jesús from Rey Felipe and then head northwards in search of civilization. On the way they were met by the English pirate Cavendish who was passing through the Strait of Magellan. For reasons never well explained the English left with only one Spaniard on board, Tome Hernandez, condemning the others to an almost certain death. This survivor, taken on board by Cavendish, wrote an account of what happened and it is this narrative that has provided the knowledge of the sad events of the two towns. Cavendish took the opportunity to visit the abandoned town of Rey Felipe which he found

English pirates and Dutch merchants After the tentative attempt at colonizing by Sarmiento (15841587), it was mainly English pirates, who used the Strait to pillage the Chilean and Peruvian coasts (various times). These pirates included the already mentioned Cavendish as well as Chidley in 1590, Cavendish again in 1592 (but he could not cross the strait) and Hawkins in 1594.

From 1600 onwards the Dutch began to frequent the Magellanic waters in earnest, searching for a route to the Spice Islands that would avoid the monopoly held by certain companies over the Cape of Good Hope route.

This was the case with Jacob Mahu and Simon de Cordes (1599), Oliver van Noort (1599) and Joris van Spilbergen (1615). Their hydrography surveys, passed on to their fellow cartographers, allowed for the publication of maps with a precision which at that time was unequalled.

Next it was the turn of the Spanish brothers Nodal who brought to a close the first century of navigation in the waters of the Strait of Magellan by rounding Cape Horn and carrying out the first circumnavigation of Tierra del Fuego before returning to Spain.

After the undertakings of Parker King and Fitz Roy the remaining exploratory tasks in the Strait were focused on the few sectors that still remained to be explored in detail, as well as furthering the scientific knowledge about the Magellanic Region. This was the case for example with the Frenchman Dumont d´Urville on route to Antarctica in 1837 and the Englishman Richard Mayne in 1866 and 1869. It is also worthwhile mentioning here the valiant and self-sacrificing survey work carried out by the Chilean navy of that time. Between 1874 and 1902 the Chileans concentrated on refining the important details of Magellanic hydrography and ensuring better safety for sailors.

In 1877 there was a second mutiny know as “Los Artilleros” which resulted in the loss of 52 lives but the dynamism of the colonists managed to quickly overcome the damage caused.

1877 was a year that marked the life of Punta Arenas and all of Patagonia forever after. Sheep brought from the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) were introduced into the region for the first time. The success was so great that numerous estancias, dedicated to sheep rearing and wool production, were quickly built on the mainland coast of the Strait and later on in Tierra del Fuego.

Ten years later, as a result of this “white gold”, there were more people living in the countryside than in the city (2.000 and 850 respectively). The farming growth was explosive; in 1877 the region had 300 sheep, in 1883, this number had increased to 30,000, by 1895 the number was 300,000, in 1903, there were 900,000 individuals and by 1928 there were 2,500,000.

Correlatively, and equally explosive, was the decrease in the indigenous population in Tierra del Fuego: the Selk'nam were exterminated or displaced in order to protect the security of the sheep.

In 1884 there was a gold rush, firstly on the Fuegian beaches exposed to the great swells of the Atlantic Ocean and then as far as the remote islands of the Cape Horn region. Short but intense (it declined after 10 years) this fever for gold produced an important long term effect. Many gold seekers, whether they had been fortunate or not, put down roots in the region and this resulted in (and for about 50 years afterwards) an important influx of immigrants, the majority coming from the island of Brac in what is now Croatia.

From 1882 onwards Punta Arenas, although small, became a true city, albeit one lost in the confines of the world. The city became the economic capital of Patagonia and a real Tower of Babel of languages and nationalities.

It was in this period that the large fortunes of some of the colonizing families were made enabling them, in barely two generations, to control the gigantic businesses that ranged all over Patagonia, on both the Chilean and the Argentine sides.

An emblematic case is that of the Portuguese José Nogueira, the Russian Mauricio Braun and the Spanish José Menéndez. Through marriage and mergers they formed what is now known as the Braun Menendez Holding Company which, from 1900 onwards, managed to control millions of hectares of Patagonian lands in Chile and Argentina as well as banks, shipping and insurance companies, sawmills, mines, shops, etc. They were the true “kings of Patagonia” and numerous elegant buildings in Punta Arenas today were built thanks to the activities or donations from this all-powerful family conglomerate born of humble immigrants.

But returning to Punta Arenas at the end of the 19th century the small and booming city had transformed into the principal port of entry for the cargo and passenger ships that were heading for the west coast of America and that preferred the more protected waters of the Strait than those of Cape Horn (remembering that steam sailing only became more widespread from 1870 onwards).

The maximum number reached was in 1913 with 1,539 boats making use of the port.

This epoch (1900-1920) was the golden age of Punta Arenas. The city established itself as the first port of call in America for many boats and as such the international news arrived from Europe, as well as the new techniques and materials and more frivolously the latest fashions from London or Paris.

The opera Lucia de Lammermoor by Donizetti was performed here. The theatre was built with funds supplied by the businessman Jose Menéndez and it was a gift to the Municipality.

a great part of the maritime traffic that had maintained it for decades during its explosive growth. The city also suffered from isolation from the rest of the country. Economic activity was maintained with highs and lows, and was based principally in sheep production for wool and meat.

Another key year in the history of Punta Arenas and the Strait was 1945 when petroleum was discovered in the northern part of the Chilean Tierra del Fuego. Under the direction of the state-run ENAP (National Petroleum Company) the appearance of the countryside and the town changed rapidly.

In addition there was an important increase in the immigration of workers coming from the island of Chiloe. Roads were built as well as new districts, villages and oil pipelines. In 1952 the city had increased to a population of 45 thousand inhabitants.

The extraction of petroleum revived to a certain degree maritime activity in the Strait. The petroleum terminal at Cape Negro, a few kilometers to the north of Punta Arenas, monopolized from then onwards the majority of cargo traffic. From 1985 with the installation in Cape Negro of the company Methanex, a world leader in the production of methanol (a type of liquid alcohol derived from gas), Punta Arenas became the supplier for around 20% of the methanol used in the world.

His first task, the Evangelistas lighthouse, was perhaps the most admirable and arduous to carry out. Located on a rock at the western entrance to the Strait (measuring 480 m by 320 m and 50 m above sea level), the construction of the lighthouse required two years exertion and the work of 80 men to raise a tower of 17 m high and 7 m in diameter, as well as build the lighthouse keeper’s house.

the reasons for which the construction of the lighthouse is considered, even today, to be one of the milestones in maritime signalling. The following anecdote well illustrates the problems faced. The nearest port to the lighthouse is a sail of two hours yet it appears on maps as “the 40 day port”.

This name comes from the fact that during the construction of the lighthouse a supply boat carrying provisions and materials had to wait this time before the right weather conditions allowed it to land on the small island.

Currently the signalling system in the Strait consists of 35 automated lighthouses and 7 manned lighthouses (Evangelistas, Fairway, Dungeness, Punta Delgada, Espíritu Santo, Félix and San Pedro). As regards Tierra del Fuego there is an inhabited lighthouse, Cape Horn (1991) and another in Diego Ramírez (1985) in the Drake Sea, as well as 49 other types of illuminated signals.

The Tierra del Fuego channels route unites the Strait of Magellan with the Beagle Channel in a maritime journey of approximately 500 km. This same trip, following an imaginary straight line, would be no more than 280 km as the crow flies.

The route starts south of Punta Arenas on the west side of Dawson Island. First the sailor must head into the Magdalena Channel before heading west into the Cockburn Channel. At the end of the Cockburn Channel is the Brecknock Peninsula which marks the extreme west of the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego. Cook Bay permits one enter the Beagle Channel through one of two arms, either the northeast or the southeast. The first is the most commonly used not only because it offers the shortest journey but also due to the numerous glaciers that fall into the sea from the Darwin Cordillera, giving it the welldeserved nickname of Glacier Avenue.

In fact, from the Brecknock Channel until well inside the northeastern arm of the Beagle Channel, there open out numerous fjords that reach deep into the middle of this Dantesque landscape of ice, wind and rock that forms the Darwin Cordillera.

This is an area with difficult access, characterized by relatively low precipitation (between 350 and 2,000 mm of rainfall annually, depending on the sector) and temperatures that average 5°. The wind is the principal factor in these channels, blowing for most of the time from the westsouthwest quadrant. The wind blasts between the mountains and the islands in a completely irregular manner, gusts or whirlwinds bounce between the rocky walls forming what sailors call “williwaws”. This phenomenon is completely unpredictable and can reach such violence that it is capable of capsizing a boat for several moments.

Nowadays the contours of the coast have been fairly accurately mapped (at least for the maritime routes that are commonly used) but various sectors further inland have yet to be explored. Such is the case for example with the Darwin Cordillera and part of Hoste Island. Modern climbers and explorers thus have a territory that is still awaiting the first human footprint.

The original inhabitants Yaghans or Yamanas were the principal inhabitants of the southern sector of the Fuegian channels. This group of nomadic maritime hunters and gatherers traveled around in bark canoes and set up their camps on the coasts. It is thought that their territory stretched from the Brecknock Pass in the west to Los Estados (Staten) Island in the east and from the Beagle Channel in the north down to Cape Horn in the south.

There is evidence proving that their ancestors occupied this region from at least 7,000 years ago. The Yaghan population was estimated at around 3,000 in the middle of the 19th century.

Their food was mainly sourced from the sea and, by preference, they ate the meat of the sea lions that they hunted or whales that had beached on the

A pesar de las semejanzas que pudieron tener, sus respectivos idiomas no tenían ningún tipo de parentesco y el origen de ambas etnias sigue siendo un misterio.

El primer contacto entre yaganes y europeos transcurrió en el año 1624 con el paso de la flota del holandés L’Hermite, pero es con las recaladas de cazadores de lobos marinos, a partir de la primera mitad del siglo XIX, que dichos contactos se hicieron más frecuentes.

A partir del año 1832 se desarrollaron varios intentos misioneros en territorio yagán, los que culminaron en 1870 con la instalación en la futura Ushuaia de los misioneros ingleses y anglicanos de la "South American Missionary Society", la que tenía su sede en Londres.

The Yaghans shared several resemblances with their neighbors to the west, the Kawesqars. They had some contact (not always peaceful) in the area found between the two arms of the Beagle Channel and the Brecknock Pass.

However despite these apparent similarities, their respective languages share no type of relationship and the origin of both ethnic groups remains a mystery.

The first recorded contact between Yaghans and Europeans occurred in 1624 with the visit of the Dutch fleet of L’Hermite, but it was with the landings of the sealers, which began during the first half of the 19th century,

From 1832 onwards various missionary attempts were made in Yaghan territory, culminating in the foundation of an Anglican mission in what was to become Ushuaia in 1870. These English missionaries were from the South American Missionary Society whose headquarters were in London.

Unfortunately the good intentions of the missionaries could not counteract two elements that provoked a rapid decrease in the Yaghan population. Currently the last visible vestiges of this group are the thousands of conchales (shell heaps), some remains of fish corrals (barrages used to catch fish during the changing tides with a mobile gate) and the beaching areas of the canoes (portions of the beach cleared of stones in order to drag up their fragile embarkations without damaging them). The Yaghans knew how to adapt themselves admirably to an extreme environment and survived for thousands of years but were unable to resist a more impalpable enemy: European expansion and its consequences.

Tentative explorations Accounts of the explorations to the south of the Strait of Magellan, from 1520 until the discovery of Cape Horn in 1616, have left many question marks and mysteries for modern historians. It is known for example that in 1526 a boat from the expedition of Loayza went adrift off the western coasts of Tierra del Fuego until “the end of the world” was sighted. Had they arrived at Cape Horn or more prosaically at Los Estados (Staten) Island?

There are also the vague records of the Portuguese Affonso (1530) who left a map marking a channel which could well be what is nowadays called the Beagle Channel.

However the most reliable information dates from 1578 when the English pirate Francis Drake was leaving the Strait of Magellan and heading for the Pacific. Hit by a series of storms, he was blown off course and had to head southeast discovering that Tierra del Fuego did indeed end in the south.

The exact point where Drake reached, which he named Port Elizabeth, has remained a mystery right up until the present day. Did he reach Cape Horn or Henderson Island (to the south of Hoste Island) or did he find an island, now disappeared, in the position of the current Pactolus (Burnham) Bank?

It is unlikely that the truth will ever be known for sure. However, centuries later, in honor of this discovery, the sea situated between Cape Horn and the Antarctic Peninsula was named Drake’s Sea or Drake’s Passage, and it is considered to be one of the fiercest seas in the world.

In spite of the evidence about the insularity of Tierra del Fuego the majority of the maps of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century represented the lands to the south of the Strait of Magellan as a continent that reached the South Pole under the name of “Terra Australis Incognita” or “Continent Australis”. This vision is perhaps based more on an aesthetic concern on the part of the cartographers to “balance” the distribution of the lands between the two hemispheres than on a geographical reality.

It was with the discovery of Cape Horn by the Dutchmen Schouten and Lemaire in 1616 that the island of Tierra del Fuego made its geographical debut.The explorations that followed the Dutch in this sector aimed to prove the existence of a new pass and to fix its geographical position and were not concerned with any actual exploration of the Fuegian channels. However some explorers identified landing areas on the southern coasts of Tierra del Fuego.

This was the case for example of James Cook, who explored Christmas Sound (on the southeastern coast of Hoste Island) in 1774 and Weddell who explored the sector of the false Cape Horn in 1823.

These English sailors carried out the titanic task of surveying the coasts from Brazil to Cape Horn and from the Strait of Magellan to Chiloe, and their findings formed the basis of a totally new cartography for this region.

The second expedition (1831-36), this time with Robert FitzRoy in command of the reconditioned Beagle, carried out a complete circumnavigation of the globe which included a stay of various months in the Fuegian channels in order to complete the surveys of the first voyage.

On its departure from Davenport the Beagle had various passengers who made their mark on history.

The first were three indigenous Fuegians that FitzRoy had taken to England on the first journey: the Yahgan Jemmy Button, and the Kawesqars York Minster and Fuegia Basket (a fourth, Boat Memory, had died in England). FitzRoy was trying to build a bridge between the English civilization and the indigenous of Tierra del Fuego, educating the Fuegians during their stay in England. (Later on during the section on the missionary work in Tierra del Fuego this praiseworthy purpose can be seen to have resulted in consequences unimaginable to FitzRoy.)

The third passenger was a young, and at that time unknown, naturalist by the name of Charles Darwin. It was on this voyage, lasting almost five years, that he collected together part of the information which led him to publish twenty-three years later his revolutionary theory about the origin of the species. In his old age he wrote "The voyage of the Beagle has been by far the most important event in my life, and has determined my whole career." The account of this famous trip was originally published in 1839, and is still in print, under the title of Voyage of the Beagle.

Es igualmente gracias a la precisión de los mapas de Fitz Roy que las rutas del estrecho de Magallanes y del cabo de Hornos se volvieron mucho más seguras para los navegantes.

But Darwin could not escape the well known English saying “No-one is perfect”. His book has several mistakes; for example when he refers to the Yaghans as cannibals that in his eyes were so miserable that “one can hardly make oneself believe they are fellow- creatures, and inhabitants of the same world”. Likewise he was wrong when he wrote that Patagonia was a sterile desert and that it would remain so forever. One has to consider the youth and inexperience of this young man who had recently left university and was imbued with all the Victorian superiority of the period.

The surveys of Parker-King, Stokes and FitzRoy left behind hundreds of place names as witnesses to their passing and these names still appear on the maps of Chile and Argentina: Beagle Channel, Navarino Island, Murray Channel, and the islands of Picton and Hoste, etc. These expeditions also produced for the first time fairly precise information about the geography, fauna, flora and inhabitants of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, territories that were at the time relatively unknown. Also, thanks to the accuracy of the maps of FitzRoy, the routes through the Magellan Strait and around Cape Horn became much safer for sailors.

During the same period of the voyages of FitzRoy there were many boats that sailed through the Fuegian waters dedicated to whale hunting and (in the internal channels) to the hunting of seals. Many of these boats came from the American port of Nantucket (Massachusetts) and later on from Punta Arenas. Without a doubt these daring sailors knew a great deal about Fuegian channels, but they kept their knowledge secret to avoid it falling into the hands of other sailors; above all information related to the hunting sites.

The Romanche After the surveys of Parker-King and FitzRoy the remaining exploration tasks left to do in the channels were limited to the sectors that had escaped their vigilance as well as attempts to broaden the scientific knowledge of the region. Such was the case of the French Mission Scientifique du cap Horn which was part of the first International Polar Year. One of the priorities of this international geodesic program was the simultaneous observation of the passage of Venus in front of the sun from various points all over the world.

The site chosen for the installation of this mission was Orange Bay, in the extreme south of Hoste Island, a few kilometers from Cape Horn. The expedition of the Romanche brought the cycle of great maritime explorations to a close in the Fuegian channels, although one must not neglect to mention De Agostini the valuable work carried out by the Chilean Navy at the beginning of the 20th century. En la Patagonia continental realizó numerosas expediciones en el sector del Paine y del Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur y Patagonia andina central (primera ascensión del monte San Lorenzo en 1943).

The Italian Alberto María De Agostini (1883-1960) played a very special role in Patagonian history. This catholic priest of the Salesian order was also a climber, explorer, writer and photographer.

To summarize his almost 50 years of trips and explorations in Patagonia in a few lines is frankly impossible but it is important to mention some of his major triumphs; a navigation to Cape Horn (1910); the attempt to climb Mount Sarmiento, the crossing of the extreme east of the Darwin Cordillera and the first ascent of Mount Olivia, close to Ushuaia (1913); the second and equally unsuccessful attempt at Mount Sarmiento (1913); a second trip to Cape Horn (1915); the exploration of Sierra Valdivieso to the north of Ushuaia (1923); and the third attempt at Mount Sarmiento and Mount Italia, both successful (1956).

In continental Patagonia he carried out numerous expeditions in the Paine sector and on the South Patagonian Ice field and central Andean Patagonia (first ascent of Mount San Lorenzo in 1943).

Alberto De Agostini publicó sobre la región magallánica varios artículos, las primeras guías turísticas, cinco hermosos libros ilustrados con sus propias fotografías y mapas, y además, filmó dos documentales. Por todo lo mencionado podemos considerar a De Agostini como un gran difusor de las bellezas fueguinas y patagónicas y, por ende, como un indirecto fundador del turismo en esta austral región de América. Alberto De Agostini wrote various articles about the Magellanic region.

He also produced the first tourist guides, published five beautiful books illustrated with his own photographs and maps and filmed two documentaries. Taking into account all the aforementioned De Agostini can be seen as a great publicizer of the beauty of Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia and thus as the indirect founder of tourism in the southern region of America. Various place names in the sector of the Cordillera Darwin mark the footsteps and work of De Agsotini such as Mount Italia, Luis de Saboya Glacier and the De Agostini Fjord.

Gunther Plüschow Este oficial retirado de la Marina Imperial alemana realizó su primer viaje a América del Sur a bordo de un velero en 1925. Fascinado por los canales australes, volvió dos años después a Punta Arenas, esta vez con su propia embarcación, el "Feuerland", con el que alcanzó el cabo de Hornos. He managed to escape and was picked up months later by a boat sent from the Malvinas/Falkland Islands. In spite of his testimony, the reasons which triggered this violent reaction were never really clarified. According to the cook, Jemmy Button and one of his brothers were the ringleaders of the massacre. Later on in a mock trial that was carried out in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas), and where no-one was declared guilty, Button absurdly blamed the Onas tribe.

In 1863 a new head of mission was named, the Reverend (and later bishop) Waite H. Stirling. This man, gifted with an extraordinary energy and courage, went to live in Ushuaia in 1869 for eight months as the only European amongst the Yaghans. His aim was to show that the moment had arrived to settle permanently right in the middle of the Yaghan territory, without there being any more risk to the safety of the missionaries.

En 1884 se instaló en Ushuaia una Sub-Prefectura argentina con su debido destacamento militar (la definición de la frontera internacional entre Chile y Argentina se había acordado en 1881). Tanto los propios yaganes como los misioneros se dieron rápidamente cuenta de las consecuencias nefastas que trajeron estos nuevos habitantes de la bahía con la aparición de enfermedades contagiosas mortales y los problemas -nuevos para los yaganes- relacionados con la ingesta de alcohol.

As a result of the success of his stay, a prefabricated house baptized as Stirling House, was sent from England to be installed in Ushuaia. The first inhabitant was Thomas Bridges who became the first European to settle on Tierra del Fuego (1871) followed soon afterwards by his colleague John Lawrence.

Por ello, se abrieron sucursales de la misión de Ushuaia en lugares más apartados: en la isla Bayly, cerca del cabo de Hornos (1888-1892), Tekenika en la isla Hoste (1892-1907), y bahía Douglas en la isla Navarino (1907-1916). La colonización

In 1884 an Argentine Sub-Prefecture was set up in Ushuaia with an attendant military presence. The Yaghans as well as the missionaries quickly realized the unfortunate consequences that these new inhabitants brought to the bay with the appearance of deadly contagious diseases and complications related to the consumption of alcohol which were new to the Yaghans.

Due to these problems the missionaries opened branches of the Ushuaia mission in places further afield: on Bayly Island, close to Cape Horn (188892), at Tekenika on Hoste Island (1892-1907), and at Douglas Bay on Navarino Island (1907-16). This last site marked the end of the missionary activity a decision that the London headquarters took upon seeing the drastic reduction in the Yaghan population.

El tratado de delimitación de las fronteras entre Chile y Argentina de 1881 dividió la isla grande de Tierra del Fuego en dos partes y otorgó a Chile las islas situadas al sur del canal Beagle y hasta el cabo de Hornos. All that remains of this true missionary epic is the already mentioned Stirling House constructed in Ushuaia in 1870. This venerable yet simple building had a strange destiny; it was taken down and reconstructed successively in Tekenika and Douglas where it remained until 2004, when it was transferred to Puerto Williams (Navarino Island) where it now forms part of the Martin Gusinde Museum.

Colonization The 1881 delimitation treaty for the borders between Chile and Argentina divided the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego into two parts awarding Chile the islands situated to the south of the Beagle Channel right down to Cape Horn. Thus from this year onwards all of the southern channels were officially Chilean, excluding the northeastern part of the Beagle Channel.

In 1884, in exactly this part, the Argentine government founded Ushuaia, the first populated settlement. At the beginning it was a modest military post (SubPrefecture) and it appeared for the first time in a national census in 1895 with 225 inhabitants. Its demographic growth was slow: increasing from 639 inhabitants in 1914 to just 2.182 in 1947.

The majority of these establishments went into decline from 1950 onwards, surviving in some cases until the present day but with a level of production greatly lower to former years.

Practically all the economy of these farming estancias was based on the sale of meat to Ushuaia, which expanded from 1902 onwards with the installation of a prison that had more than 500 prisoners. Until its closure in 1947, this establishment was the real motor for the colonization of not only Ushuaia but also indirectly of all the region of the Beagle Channel.

The estancias generated further incomes with the sale of wool to Punta Arenas and wood for the Falklands (Malvinas), Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Valparaiso.

El interés del gobierno chileno por asentar su soberanía en este remoto limite sur de la República fue en aquellos tiempos escaso, a pesar de las tentativas por establecer poblados en isla Navarino, como lo fueron las efímeras fundaciones de Puerto Toro (1892) y Puerto Navarino (1931). En 1906 un censo contabilizó en las “islas australes” de Chile: 112 habitantes, 20 casas, 51 caballos, 645 vacunos y 20.881 ovejas. En 1927, estas cifras crecieron a 200 personas y 40 mil animales. Cabe precisar que gran parte de estos habitantes eran yaganes.

The Chilean government of the time showed little interest in establishing sovereignty on this remote southern limit of the Republic although there were attempts at founding settlements on Navarino Island, as was the case with the short lived existence of Puerto Toro (1892) and Puerto Navarino (1931). In 1906 a census counted 112 inhabitants, 20 houses, 51 horses, 645 cows and 20,881 sheep on these southern islands. In 1927 these figures had increased to 200 people and 40,000 animals with a large number of the inhabitants being Yaghans.

but from 1989 onwards the slow process began of handing over the control of the town to civil authorities.

During the first half of the 20th century there were some families, usually Yaghans or Chilotes, who lived a very precarious existence on the small islands dotted around Navarino Island. The attraction that signified the facilities offered by Puerto Williams (school, hospital, etc.) led to the abandonment of these remote places.

Cabe recordar que luego de un largo proceso diplomático, Argentina y Chile estuvieron a punto de generar una guerra en 1978 por diferencias de interpretación sobre el trazado de la frontera en el canal Beagle, lo que reforzó aún más la presencia militar en ambas orillas de dicho canal. Gracias al arbitraje del papa Juan Pablo II se firmó en 1984 el “Tratado de Paz y Amistad” que puso fin a esta larga controversia con el pleno reconocimiento de la soberanía chilena de las islas situadas al sur del Beagle y hasta el cabo de Hornos, devolviendo así la calma en las aguas naturalmente agitadas del canal Beagle.

Worthwhile mentioning is the long diplomatic process which took Argentina and Chile to the brink of a war in 1978 over differences in the interpretation of the border treaty of the Beagle Channel. This led to an increased military presence on both sides of the channel but thanks to the arbitration of Pope John Paul II the “Treaty of Peace and Friendship” was signed in 1984 which put an end to this long controversy with full recognition of the Chilean supremacy of the islands located south of the Beagle Channel all the way to Cape Horn, this returned calm to the naturally agitated waters of the Beagle Channel.

The channels today At present, Puerto Williams has close to 2,000 inhabitants most of whom are concentrated on Navarino Island. El cabo de Hornos es la punta sur de la isla Hornos y está situado a 55º 59’ latitud sur y 67º 16’ longitud oeste, levantándose a 417 m. sobre el nivel del mar.

Cape Horn is the southern point of the Hornos island and it is situated 55º 59’ South and 67º 16’ West, rising to 417 m. above sea level.

Hornos islad is part of a small archipelago composed of 8 islands: Grevy, Bayly, Wollaston, Freycinet, Hermite, Herschel, Deceit and Hornos.

Geographers have never reached a consensus about the name of this group of islands and as such they are variously called either the Wollaston Islands or the Cape Horn archipelago.

To the south of Cape Horn opens out Drake’s Sea (also known as Drake’s Passage or Drake’s Strait) which separates Tierra del Fuego from Antarctica. This sea is considered to be one of the most difficult in the world to navigate.

Cape Horn is located at the confluence of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

It is also on the route of the winds blowing from the west to the east around the south of the globe undeterred by any obstacle. This location means it cannot be anything else than one of the most violent climatic manifestations of wind and sea.

The big question that fills hundreds of pages of books about Cape Horn consists in determining whether the climate is better in summer or winter.

The truth is that in reality the weather is equally bad during both seasons but the difference lies in the fact that in winter the climate is stable for longer periods of time whether this be good or bad weather. In summer, on the other hand, the weather changes quickly, varying from absolute calm to hurricane winds in a matter of minutes.

Como lo vimos en el capítulo anterior, eran los yaganes quienes poblaban la región incluida entre el canal Beagle y el cabo de Hornos. El grupo que ocupaba más a menudo las islas Wollaston se llamaba “Yeskusinaala”, palabra derivada de Yeskusin, que significa “grupo compuesto de varias islas”. As described in the previous chapter the Yaghans were the inhabitants of the region between the Beagle Channel and Cape Horn. The group that more or less occupied the Wollaston Islands was called “Yeskusinaala”, a word derived from Yeskusin which means “group composed of various islands”. This group had sporadic contact with the missionaries in Ushuaia between 1888 and 1892 when there was a mission settlement on Bayly Island.

The famous Rosa Yagán or, to use her real name, Lakutaia le Kipa, was as she herself declared “the last of the Wollaston tribe”. Before her death in 1983 the Chilean journalist Patricia Stambuk recorded her memories and published them in the book Rosa Yagán, el último eslabón (Rosa Yagan, the last link). This book deserves a particular mention as it is the only testimony of former times left by a Yaghan.

Discovery

El descubrimiento At the beginning of the 16th century there were two known routes to the “Spice Islands”; that of the Cape of Good Hope and that of the Strait of Magellan.

Theoretically, the first route was a Portuguese monopoly and the second a Spanish monopoly but both countries were unable to resist the new maritime and commercial

The Dutch were actually in a stronger position and in 1602 a law brought together all the companies that were doing business in the East into a single monopoly called the Dutch East India Company. So in 1614, the merchant Isaac Le Maire and the sailor Willem Schouten went into partnership to discover a new route and thus legally evade the monopoly of the all powerful company. At this time, as was shown in the second chapter, there were various rumors that were circulating in the maritime world which led many to believe that Tierra del Fuego was not a continent that reached the South Pole and as such there had to exist a pass more southerly than the Strait of Magellan.

In November 1615 they docked in Puerto Deseado but a fire started during the caulking of the Hoorn which resulted in the loss of this boat.

Thus with only the Eendracht they left Puerto Deseado, passed in front of the entrance to the Strait of Magellan and continued their journey southwards.

At the end of January of the following year they entered a strait that they named Le Maire.

Explorers and travelers In Spain the discovery of this new Cape Horn route provoked a rapid reaction for fear of a massive arrival of Dutch or English boats into the southern seas.

The South American colonies were seen to be in danger so King Felipe III organized an expedition to confirm the discovery of Schouten and Le Maire.

This expedition, consisting of two boats, under the command of the brothers Bartolome and Gonzalo Nodal, set sail from Lisbon in September 1618. In February of the following year they rounded Cape Horn, which they rebaptized as Cape Idelfonso. They also discovered the Diego Ramírez Islands (the name of the principal pilot and the cosmographer of the expedition) and then returned to the Atlantic via the Strait of Magellan. This expedition carried out the first circumnavigation of Tierra del Fuego.

In 1623 an important military fleet composed of 11 boats, 1037 crew, 600 soldiers and 294 cannons set sail from the Dutch port of Goeree. Led by Jacobus L’Hermite and Hugues Schapenham the objective of this fleet was to attack and conquer Peru, taking advantage of the end of the truce between Holland and Spain that had been in force from 1609 and 1621.

L’Hermite and his fleet arrived at Cape Horn in February 1624 and spent more than a month exploring the surrounding area. It was during this time that various names entered into modern usage such as the bays of Nassau, Windhond, Orange and Schapenham, the Goree Pass, L’Hermite Island and the small islands of Vauverlandt, Terhalten and Evout. Peru was not conquered but there was considerable progress made concerning the geographical knowledge of the area situated between Cape Horn and the southern part of Navarino Island. During this expedition the first contact with the indigenous of the region was made thus marking the entrance of the Yaghans into history.

After hostilities between Holland and Spain had once again started a new Dutch military expedition, with the mission of conquering the coasts of Chile, explored the region of Cape Horn in 1642 under the command of Hendrik Brouwer. His main contribution was to determine the insularity of “the land of the states”, which thus became the Isla de los Estados (Staten Island). This important discovery definitively cast aside the existence of the mythical “Continente Australis” although some geographers persevered in drawing the imaginary contours on their maps. During this expedition the first shipwreck was recorded in the waters off Cape Horn. The boat was the Orangie Boom which had the sad honor of heading a long list of maritime misfortunes in the waters surrounding the Cape.

After this period, marked principally by Dutch discoveries, the Cape Horn route entered into a period of lethargy which ended at the beginning of 1680 when English pirates began to pass through the region. Amongst them were Sharp, Dampier, Rogers and Shelvocke. When Rogers returned to England he took with him Alexander Selkirk, more commonly known as the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe, who had spent five years living alone on the island of Juan Fernandez in the Pacific.

The Frenchman Gouin de Beauchesne (the source of the name of the Island of Beauchêne, to the south of the Falkland Islands/Malvinas) rounded the Cape in 1701, on his return from a commercial expedition to the west coast of South America. He was followed by other compatriots who did not provide much knowledge about the region except for d’Arquistade (1701), who left behind a fairly imprecise map of the Bay of San Francisco, the area found between the islands of Hornos, Herschel and L’Hermite.

Cabe mencionar que a principios del siglo XVIII los franceses –seguidos rápidamente por los ingleses– entablaron relaciones comerciales ilegales con las colonias españolas americanas. Esto no se limitó al nuevo continente, ya que también comerciaron con China, usando discretamente la ruta del cabo de Hornos. Es en este tráfico de contrabando muy lucrativo que se debe ver los orígenes de los "caphorniers" de los siglos XIX y XX.

At the beginning of the 18th century the French, rapidly followed by the English, struck up illegal commercial relations with the Spanish dominated American colonies. This commerce was not just limited to the new continent as the French and English also traded with China discreetly using the Cape Horn route. It was this very lucrative contraband traffic which gave rise to the “Cape Horners” of the 19th and 20th centuries.

In 1711 and 1714, the Frenchman Amédée Frezier twice rounded Cape Horn. His astronomical and meteorological observations, as well as his cartography, remained as an important reference for the area for decades. In 1722, the Dutchman Jacob Roggeween left Holland to trade in the Philippines passing via the Cape. On route he discovered an island lost in the middle of the Pacific exactly on Easter Sunday. This island is now known as Easter Island.

However, as detailed in the previous chapters, it was thanks to the surveys carried out by Robert FitzRoy that the geographical position of the Cape was fixed in a precise manner. For the first time the contours of the islands surrounding the Cape were put onto the maps as well which considerably helped on more than one occasion boats that were in difficulty during the passage round the Cape. The following extracts from Fitzroy’s diary relate the ascent to the summit of Cape Horn in April 1830.

In order to transport these enormous quantities of people and merchandise the most rapidly as possible and at a low cost, a type of sailboat (originally conceived for military purposes during the war of independence in the United States) was developed: the clipper. This boat was light, rapid, needed only a small crew and had masts and sails that were gigantic in relation to its hull.

Para trasladar estas enormes cantidades de gentes y mercaderías lo más rápido posible y a bajo costo, se impuso un tipo de velero originalmente concebido por motivos militares durante la guerra de independencia de los Estados Unidos: el clípper. Este barco era liviano, rápido, necesitaba escasa tripulación, y tenía mástiles y velámenes gigantescos en relación a su casco.

One of the most perfect examples of these “windjammers” was without a doubt the famous Cutty Sark. Measuring no more than 58 m long its tallest mast was more than 45 m above the bridge and could unfurl 3,000 m2 of sails. Loaded with tea it could reach a speed of 17 knots (31.5 kmph). On one of its trips it covered 2,180 miles (4,037 km) in just a week.

Uno de los ejemplos más perfectos de estas “maquinas de viento”, fue sin duda el famoso "Cutty Sark". No medía más de 58 m. de eslora, pero su mástil más alto medía 45 m. encima del puente, pudiendo desplegar hasta 3.000 m2 de velas. Cargado de té, podía alcanzar la velocidad de 17 nudos (31,5 km/h). En uno de sus viajes, recorrió en una semana la distancia de 2.180 millas (4037 km).

Another famous clipper was the Flying Cloud, which was 68m long. In 1851 this boat set a record of only 89 days for the voyage from New York to San Francisco via Cape Horn. At the time this trip usually took an average of 135 days. The inverse record was set by the Henry Allen also in 1851 with the journey taking 225 days.

After 1880 giant sailboats were built with steel hulls and 4 or 5 masts of the same material, for example the German Preussen which measured 133 m long and 16.50 wide and had a sail area of 5,600 m2. However what is considered the largest sailboat in the world was the France II. This boat, built in 1912 by the ship-owner Frances Bordes, measured 150 m long, 17 m wide and it had five masts which could take 6,350 m2 of sails. It disappeared off New Caledonia in 1922.

Otro clípper famoso fue el "Flying Cloud", de 68 m. de largo. Estableció en 1851 el record de la travesía desde Nueva York hasta San Francisco por el cabo de Hornos en 89 días. En esa misma época, ese viaje se realizaba en 135 días promedio. El record inverso lo estableció el "Henry Allen", igualmente en 1851, con 225 días de viaje.

el velero más grande del mundo fue el "France II". Construido en 1912 por el armador francés Bordes, medía 150 m. de eslora, 17 m. de manga, tenía cinco mástiles y 6.350 m2 de velas. Desapareció en Nueva Caledonia en 1922.

Compañías inglesas, francesas, norteamericanas, alemanas y noruegas fueron las grandes competidoras de esta verdadera carrera internacional contra los factores climáticos, los peligros del mar y el desarrollo de la navegación a vapor.

La época de oro de la ruta del cabo de Hornos surcada por estos gigantescos veleros tuvo lugar en los primeros años del siglo XX, cuando en 1914 la compañía francesa Bordes (la segunda más importante del mundo) tenía 17 veleros de tres mástiles y 29 de cuatros mástiles. Pero entre la pérdida de la mitad de sus barcos durante la primera guerra mundial, la apertura del canal de Panamá en 1914 y la competencia de los barcos a vapor, la ruta del cabo de Hornos perdió su razón de ser y la mayoría de los grandes veleros de Bordes terminaron hechos chatarra, mientras la compañía desapareció definitivamente en 1926.

The golden age when the route of Cape Horn was plied by these gigantic sailboats was during the first years of the 20th century. In 1914 the French company Bordes (the second most important in the world) had 17 sailboats with three masts and 29 with four masts. Nevertheless with the loss of half of these boats during the First World War, the opening of the Panama Canal in 1914 and the competition of the steam boats, the Cape Horn route lost its reason for being. The majority of the sailboats belonging to Bordes ended up as scrap, whilst the company folded in 1926.

El final de esta flota fue un fenómeno generalizado en el mundo, quedando sólo una quincena de veleros que surcaban aún esporádicamente las aguas del cabo de Hornos. La mayor parte de ellos pertenecía al finlandés Gustaf Ericsson, quien fue el último armador en el mundo en mantener una flota de veleros. La última carrera de transporte de trigo desde Australia hacia Europa por el cabo de Hornos se realizó en 1939 con 13 veleros.

The disappearance of this fleet was a trend generalized throughout the world with only about 15 sailboats left that sporadically sailed around Cape Horn. The majority of these belonged to the Finn, Gustaf Ericsson, who was the last ship-owner in the world to maintain a fleet of sailboats. The last race transporting wheat from Australia to Europe via Cape Horn took place in 1939 with 13 sailboats.

The last straw for the era of the great Cape Horner sailboats was the tragic shipwreck of the Pamir in 1957. At that time the boat was a training ship for the German Navy but it also transported grain between Argentina and Europe. The Pamir was unable to withstand a hurricane in the middle of the

Los historiadores modernos estiman que entre el siglo XVII y el XX se perdieron en los alrededores del cabo de Hornos unos 800 barcos, provocando la muerte de al menos 10 mil tripulantes.

Atlantic Ocean and out of its crew of 86, almost all cadets, only six were able to be rescued.

Modern historians estimate that between the 17th and the 20th centuries 800 boats were lost in the area surrounding the Cape, with the loss of at least 10,000 sailors.

The Cape Horners

Los Caphorniers En los medios marineros de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y primera del XX, se desarrolló toda una cultura ligada al paso del cabo de Hornos. De esta manera, los capitanes que comandaban un buque que había pasado por el Cabo eran reconocidos como "Caphorniers"

In the maritime world of the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century there arose a culture surrounding Cape Horn and those captains who commanded a sailboat that had rounded the Cape became known as ‘Cape Horners’.

Gradually there built up innumerable stories and accounts relating to the enormous difficulties that ships experienced rounding the Cape and the incredible feats that they carried out. The waters around the Cape witnessed an incredible number of heroic acts and plenty of drama, which generated a body of stories, traditions and customs specifically bound up with the Cape Horners.

Poco a poco se tramaron innumerables historias y relatos ligados a las enormes dificultades que solían tener los barcos en el cruce del cabo de Hornos y las increíbles hazañas que realizaron. En estas aguas se vivieron una cantidad increíble de actos heroicos y de dramas, los que generaron un corpus de historias, tradiciones y costumbres específicamente ligadas a los Caphorniers

The great sailboats had practically disappeared by the 1930´s but in 1937 a group of French Cape Horner captains founded a society called the Amicale des capitaines au long cours cap horniers in the port of Saint Malo. At their inaugural meeting there were 30 captains present and between them they shared 900 sailing years and had rounded the Horn 250 times.

Los grandes veleros habían prácticamente desaparecido en los años treinta, pero en 1937 un grupo de capitanes Caphorniers franceses fundaron en el puerto de Saint Malo la "Amicale des capitaines au long cours cap horniers". En su reunión inaugural estuvieron presente 30 de ellos, quienes totalizaban 900 años de navegación y 250 cruces del cabo de Hornos.

After the incorporation of numerous foreign members they added the word international to their name in 1950 and from that date accepted officers and sailors alike of all nationalities who had rounded the Cape on board merchant navy sailboats.

Con la incorporación de numerosos socios extranjeros, se agregó en 1950 la palabra "internationale" a su nombre y desde entonces se aceptaron igualmente los oficiales y marinos de todas las nacionalidades que habían pasado por el Cabo sobre barcos a vela de la marina mercante.

In 2003 the original association folded due to the death of the majority of its founding members but it continued in several countries under a variety

of names. In Chile for example the Cofradía de los capitanes del cabo de Hornos (the Brotherhood of the Captains of Cape Horn) was founded in 1987. In 1992 this fraternity erected the Monument to Cape Horn, a giant sculpture representing an albatross in flight on the Isla Hornos.

En el año 2003 se extinguió la asociación madre por el deceso de la mayor parte de sus miembros, pero perdura en varios países del mundo bajo distintos nombres. En Chile, por ejemplo, se fundó en 1987 la Cofradía de los capitanes del cabo de Hornos. Es dicha cofradía que en 1992 hizo erigir en la isla Hornos el Monumento Cabo de Hornos, escultura gigante que representa un albatros en vuelo.

In conclusion we will quote the lovely homage to the Cape Horners by the French writer Paul Guimard: “Cape Horn could have been nothing more than what it is: a point on the world map. But the men and their sailboats transformed it into an epic.”

Como conclusión, citaremos el hermoso homenaje a los Caphorniers del escritor francés Paul Guimard: "El cabo de Hornos hubiera podido ser para siempre nada más de lo que es: un punto sobre el mapa del mundo. Pero los hombres y los veleros lo han transformado en una epopeya."

Settlers To talk of settlers on Cape Horn may seem somewhat strange to the reader, and with good reason: Isla Hornos was never permanently inhabited.

However L.H.Burleigh, an English missionary, lived between 1888 and 1892 with his wife and children, 50 km to the north on Bayly Island, which is part of the Wollaston Islands.

Pobladores Hablar de pobladores en el cabo de Hornos parecerá extraño a más de un lector y tendrá toda la razón: la isla de Hornos nunca fue habitada permanentemente. Pero a 50 km. más al norte, en la isla Bayly, que es parte de las islas Wollaston, vivieron entre 1888 y 1892 el misionero inglés L.H. Burleigh, con su esposa e hijos.

This temporary mission at Bayly functioned as a branch of the Ushuaia mission and Burleigh dedicated himself to evangelizing the Yaghans of the Wollaston Islands and to helping any shipwrecks. After four years, due to the extreme harshness of the climate and the impossibility of even growing potatoes, the mission transferred a little more to the northwest to Tekenika Bay on Hoste Island. Mrs. Burleigh years later wrote of her time, “It is a fearful coast, and humanly speaking not fit for habitation. Often when these gales were raging we had to hang blankets and cloth round the kitchen to enable us to keep a fire and to burn a candle. In consequence of the swampiness of the soil nothing would grow, and while we were so far south we had no vegetables of our own”. Considering what she had written

Between 1906 and 1908 the Hunziker brothers from the Falkland Islands also established themselves on Bayly Island. They raised sheep but lost “many during the winters. Only 70 of the 200 sheep that we brought survived although we had 100 births in those two years”.

Entre 1906 y 1908 se establecieron -igualmente- en la isla Bayly los hermanos Hunziker, oriundos de las islas Malvinas. Criaron ovejas, pero perdieron “bastante durante los inviernos. Solo 70 de las 200 ovejas que trajimos sobrevivieron, a pesar que tuvimos 100 nacimientos en estos dos años”.

Apart from these two cases there were no other known attempts at settling in the area close to the Cape, apart from some sealers or otter hunters who established camps for a few weeks at a time. During the gold rush, that shook the south of Tierra del Fuego at the end of the 19th century, some gold diggers from Lennox Island tried their luck at panning on several of the beaches of the Wollaston Islands.

Fuera de estos dos casos, no se conocen otras tentativas de radicación en las cercanías del cabo de Hornos, salvo uno pocos loberos o cazadores de nutrias, quienes establecían campamentos por pocas semanas.

Sabemos que durante la fiebre aurífera que sacudió el sur de Tierra del Fuego a finales del siglo XIX, algunos buscadores provenientes de la isla Lennox intentaron lavar la arena de algunas playas de las islas Wollaston.

Cape Horn today Nowadays the inter-oceanic maritime route round the Cape Horn is only used by some petrol supertankers or gigantic grain tankers that are unable to pass through the Panama Canal or the Strait of Magellan.

However tourist navigations have taken over from the sailboats of former years and each summer Cape Horn is admired by thousands of tourists on board large cruise ships.

Also with the boom in modern sailing for sport and the great trans-oceanic races the Horn has been able to re-establish its position as a world landmark for sailors.

El cabo de Hornos hoy La ruta de navegación interoceánica del cabo de Hornos se usa hoy en día solamente por algunos petroleros o granaleros gigantes que no pueden cruzar el canal de Panamá o el estrecho de Magallanes.

Sin embargo, la navegación con fines turísticos tomó el relevo de los veleros de antaño y cada verano el cabo de Hornos es admirado por miles de personas a bordo de grandes cruceros.

Precursors to this sport were some sailors with admirable courage who began to navigate the waters of the Cape in sailboats with low tonnage, for example the Argentine Vito Dumas in 1930. However from 1960 onwards Cape Horn transformed into an achievable goal for many sailors in the world. Damien), amongst others, opened the way for sailboats from all over the world sailing from either Puerto Williams or Ushuaia to round the Cape in sailboats of 12 meters or more.

Amongst other navigational details we can mention that in 1947 the Sea Robin, a submarine from the USA was the first to round the Cape (in peacetime). As well on 13 December, 1977 the Englishmen Barry Smith, Nigel Matthews, Frank Goodman and Jim Hargreaves were the first to paddle round the Cape in kayaks, a feat which has been repeated various times since then.

Entre otros datos de navegación, podemos mencionar que en 1947 se registró el primer cruce del Horn en tiempos de paz por un submarino (el "Sea Robin", de EE.UU.). Además, el 13 de diciembre 1977, los ingleses Barry Smith, Nigel Matthews, Frank Goodman y Jim Hargreaves fueron los primeros en doblar el Cabo ¡en kayac!, hazaña que se ha repetido desde entonces varias veces.

The first lighthouse on Cape Horn was inaugurated in 1962 and rebuilt in 2007. Today a member of the Chilean Navy lives on the island of Hornos with his family in charge of the vigilance of the maritime traffic in the sector. This is a posting that lasts for one year.

Since 1945 the island of Hornos and its archipelago have made up the Cape Horn National Park with an area of 63.093 hectares. In 2005 the entire Chilean region between Cordillera Darwin and Cape Horn was declared a “Biosphere Reserve” by UNESCO.

El primer faro del cabo de Hornos fue inaugurado en 1962 y reconstruido en 2007. Hoy vive en la isla Hornos un miembro de la Armada de Chile con su esposa e hijos, encargado de la vigilancia del tráfico marítimo en el sector. Permanece en este lugar por un período de un año.

Desde el año 1945, la isla Hornos y su archipiélago conforman el Parque Nacional Cabo de Hornos, con una superficie de 63.093 hectáreas. En 2005, toda la región chilena situada entre la cordillera Darwin y el cabo de Hornos fue declarada “Reserva de la Biosfera” por la UNESCO.

On the most stormy and horrendous nights he drags these shackles around making them creak and groan at the bottom of the sea and the waters and the obscure shadows seem to rise up to the sky before crashing down to this abyss."
