SAWASDEE KA Welcome to the first edition of the Thailand Marine Guide. For the past two decades the publishers have focused on all things nautical in Phuket, but this year we are covering the leisure marine industry throughout Thailand. The Phuket Marine Guide was first published in 2003 by Ensign Media Co., Ltd., under the supervision of Duncan Worthington. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we stopped printing for two years (2021-2022) but we returned last year with a new online format, prepared, edited and published by The Smart Global Company Limited. Our goal is to become an educational and informative resource for anyone involved in Thailand’s leisure marine industry. We will continue to update our listings, providing better and more accurate information as this vital sector of Thailand’s economy continues to grow.

Pioneering Green Navigation: The Potential of Electric and Hybrid Boats in Thailand Elevating the Electric and Hybrid Boating Experience Thanaya Pleenaram (Managing Director at Sky Marine Group) In the world of boating, innovation knows no bounds. For those navigating the picturesque waters of Thailand, embracing electric and hybrid boats opens the door to a new era of eco-friendly and sustainable maritime exploration. The Advantage of Electric and Hybrid Boats
electric motors have minimal maintenance requirements, leading to long-term savings. 3.Global Growth and Thailand’s Potential:While the global market for electric and hybrid boats has been on the rise, Thailand has not fully tapped into this eco-conscious movement. Across the world, nations are recognizing the advantages of electric and hybrid boats:
1. Elevating Environmental Responsiveness: Electric and hybrid boats are not just vessels; they are the flag-bearers of environmental stewardship. These innovative creations produce zero emissions, preserving the pristine beauty of Thailand’s waterways.
Market Expansion: In Europe, the electric and hybrid boat market has seen substantial growth, with countries like Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden embracing cleaner boating practices.
2.Practicality Meets Savings: Beyond their environmental benefits, electric and hybrid boats are also the key to substantial cost savings. Let’s delve into the economics:
- Government Initiatives: Various countries are encouraging the shift toward greener boating. Incentives and regulations are pushing for the adoption of electric and hybrid propulsion systems.
- Fuel Efficiency: Electric and hybrid boats are significantly more fuel-efficient than their traditional counterparts. The cost of electricity is markedly lower than gasoline or diesel, making every voyage budget-friendly. On average, electric and hybrid boats can reduce fuel costs by 70% or more. - Maintenance Savings: Electric and hybrid propulsion systems are simpler and have fewer moving parts, resulting in reduced maintenance costs. Traditional engines require frequent oil changes, filter replacements, and other costly servicing. In contrast,
- Technological Advancements: Electric and hybrid propulsion technologies have rapidly advanced, offering longer range, faster charging, and greater efficiency. 4.Thailand’s Marine Industry Transformation: Thailand’s marine industry is at the cusp of transformation, and electric and hybrid boats play a vital role in defining its future. The potential is immense, and embracing these vessels can catalyze Thailand’s entry into the global electric and hybrid boat market.
Setting a Course for Sustainable Navigation The electric and hybrid boat industry is at the forefront of introducing a cleaner and more sustainable marine environment in Thailand. These boats, beyond being eco-conscious, deliver a superior boating experience that elevates every journey. Join the Revolution Our journey doesn’t end here. Thailand’s marine industry is evolving, and electric and hybrid boats are leading the transformation. As pioneers of this movement, we have the privilege of spearheading a revolution that enhances the way we explore Thailand’s stunning waterways. Conclusion The allure of Thailand’s waters is timeless, but the way we explore them should evolve. Electric and hybrid boats aren’t just an option; they are a commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable maritime future. It’s more than a vessel; it’s a vision for a greener tomorrow. Step into the future of boating and champion the merits of electric and hybrid boats. Let’s be architects of a more sustainable maritime future for Thailand, together. Save on costs, embrace eco-friendliness, and experience the best of both worlds. Join the global movement towards cleaner and more sustainable boating practices.

THAILAND BRIEF

THAILAND BRIEF Thailand located in tropical Southeast Asia, encompasses a sprawling land area of 513,120 square kilometers, accommodating a thriving population of 69.4 million. Classified as an upper-middleincome economy, Thailand boasts a fruitful ecosystem and a remarkable biodiversity, which serve as crucial components for the welfare of local communities and national advancement. Renowned as one of the most biodiverse nations in Southeast Asia, Thailand reaps immense benefits from its exceptional array of ecosystems, landscapes, and habitats. Notably, an astonishing 9% of all known species can be found within the country’s borders. Diving deeper into Thailand’s natural treasures, the nation houses a staggering 15,000 plant species, accounting for approximately 8% of the global tally. In terms of fauna, Thailand holds sway with 302 mammal species, over 980 bird species, 320 reptile species, and 120 amphibians. Excitingly, the nation also boasts an impressive aquatic biodiversity, with over 11,900 marine invertebrate species and a similarly striking count of approximately 2,100 marine fish
16
species. Additionally, Thailand’s inland waterways house 720 freshwater fish species, contributing significantly to the estimated global fish species population. Even Thailand’s coral reefs exhibit substantial diversity. Within Thailand’s natural wonders lies the critical role played by watersheds, river basins, and coastal regions, both in terms of environmental importance and their contributions to livelihoods dependent on fisheries, recreation, and tourism. Equally instrumental is Thailand’s historically extensive forest coverage, profoundly impacting agriculture and fulfilling water and energy needs. With 163,974.52 square kilometers of forest areas, equating to 31.68% of the country’s overall land area, including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and other conservation reserves, Thailand boasts an impressive forest vitality. While Thailand is committed to protecting the coastal and marine areas, targeting a high threshold of 10%, the current total coverage stands at approximately 18,000 square kilometers, which accounts for 5.6% of Thai waters.

Half Hitch
Sheet Bend
Bowline Knot
Make a loop in the line, with the working end over the standing end. The working end goes through the loop, around behind the standing end and back into the loop. To close the knot, pull tightly. To untie, turn the knot over and bend it downward to loosen it.
Form a loop around the object you want to tie on to. Pass the end around the standing end and through the loop then tighten into the completed half hitch, which is designed to take a load on the standing end.
Pass the working end twice around the post keeping the second turn slack. Pass the working end over the standing end and under the original slack turn to tie the first half hitch. Pass the line around the standing end to tie a second half hitch and finish the knot.
Heaving Line Knot
Make a bight (loop) in the line and hold it so that it encloses the working end. Wrap the working end around the first two strands, then around all three to use up the line of the working end. Finish the knot by passing the working end through the loop.
Pass the working end around the standing end then pass it around again. Tuck it beside the first turn and pull tightly. Pass the working end around again and then tie a half hitch to complete the knot.

Carrick Bend
Anchor Hitch
Figure-eight Knot Pass the working end over itself to form a loop then loop under and around the standing end. Finish the knot by passing the tail of the line down through the loop.
Form a bight (loop) in the thicker line and hold it in one hand. Pass the thinner line through the bight and behind first the working end and then the standing end. Tuck the thinner line under itself to finish.
With one line, form a loop with the working end under the standing end. Pass the line under the loop of the other line and then over and under. Thread the working line across the loop passing under itself. To finish, pull both standing ends to tighten the knot.
Alpine Butterfly Bend
Join the two ends, then wind the line around your hand so the join is by your fingertips. Wind the line around your hand again, then fold the join back and up under the other lines. Push the knot off your hand and tighten. To finish the knot, release the temporary join.

Mr. Sven Cornelius
Chief Executive Officer Rolly Tasker Sails (Thailand) Co., Ltd. Please tell us a little about your company, when it was established and how it has grown over the years. Rolly Tasker Sails was established in 1949 by the well-known and very successful Australian yachtsman, Rolly Tasker (1926 to 2012), who won a Silver medal at the 1956 sailing Olympics and many World Championships, among others in the Flying Dutchman class. Later, he became hugely successful in ocean racing. He started his sailmaking business in Australia. After the beginnings in Australia, Rolly Tasker opened a Hong Kong branch of his sailmaking firm already in 1961. In 1992, he began his first sail-loft in Phuket, Thailand. Rolly himself was
26
always passionately at the heart of his company, constantly eager to learn, and doing everything himself whenever he could. Over the course of his life, he designed and built 26 different racing yachts, among these nearly all of his famous ocean-racers named “Siska” for which he manufactured all sails, masts, rigging and most of the deck hardware himself. He sailed over 2000 races without any gear failure and without once having to retire early. In 2006, Rolly opened a new sailmaking facility in Phuket, designed once more by himself. With a floor area of 100.000 square feet it is the world’s largest, purpose-built sail-loft. Today, 120 highly motivated staff work here, of which the big majority stay with the firm over many years, if not decades: Sail designers, sailmakers, riggers, spar and ropemakers, engineers and office staff. The team is led by our Operations Manager Mikael Pophillat, passionate sailor and a professional in Marine Industry. Production conforms to ISO standards and not only sails are made, but also the necessary fittings, cordage, spars and complete rigs.
Please tell us a little about yourself and how long you have been with the company. I am passionate about sailing and a sailmaker by profession, having run my own business in Germany when I began to also import sails by Rolly Tasker. So, for several years I worked very closely with Rolly and his wife Kerry. During this time, a strong personal, familylike bond was forged between us. Rolly personally trained me with a view to continue with his company and prepare me to run the business with a long-term perspective as CEO and successor of the company.
I also hold a university degree in international business development.
Outside of Phuket, where else are Rolly Tasker offices or reps located globally? We have many representatives and dealers across the world, especially in Europe and the USA but also of course Australia. Our global HQ in Phuket is ideally situated in one of the world’s major cruising hubs, and crews and owners of many yachts come by and visit us, taking advantage of our locally based, friendly and professional services for anything from the deck up: sails, rigging and spars.
Please tell us about the range of sails you offer. We strive to always deliver best value for money – from our tried and tested top of the range Ocean sails that are incredibly durable and reliable (Jon Sanders sailed around the globe alone and non-stop three times in a row with just one suit of our sails), to performance cruising sails made from various materials and designs to very affordable, inshore sails for relaxed family sailing. We make sails for all sizes of boats and yachts, from dinghies to the largest maxi cruising yachts. Especially for many long-term ocean voyaging sailors, Rolly Tasker is the sailmaker of choice, proven and reliable.
Please tell us about your mast and rigging options. Our dedicated team can cover all your marine and architectural rigging requirements. We replace standing riggings out of high-quality wire and fittings, and make our own spars. Rolly Tasker spar sections are top of the range marine grade 6061-76, aluminium alloy extrusions, featuring
thick walls. They may be a fraction heavier than their industrially made counterparts, but the benefits of having a much stronger spar, not to mention a much longer life span when considering long term corrosion more than compensate for this. In addition, we can supply spinnaker poles, catamaran forebeams, bowsprits, spreaders etc. These can be for new yachts or replacement needs, including insurance purposes.
For your chandlery, please describe the products available. Rolly Tasker Sails is the distributor for Harken, Ronstan and Tylaska in Thailand, to name but a few. We offer their complete range of products, which as well as the run of the mill items, includes roller furling units and blocks, winches etc.
If people are interested in making a purchase or seeing your facility, can they just drop in, or must they make a booking beforehand? Yachtspeople are always welcome to visit the Rolly Tasker Sails loft in Phuket for a chat and a look around. However, a prior appointment will guarantee that our dedicated staff will have sufficient time to discuss your sail, rigging or hardware needs with you in detail.

destinations worldwide and had the privilege of working on the illustrious HMS Ark Royal, until its decommissioning. Following my military service and a period of extensive travel, I decided to make a life-changing move to Phuket, Thailand. This relocation marked the beginning of my involvement in the leisure marine industry. What brought you to Phuket originally & what are your specific duties with Simpson Marine?
Mr. Nick Longstaff
The charter sales manager for Thailand and Malaysia Simpson Marine Charter Please tell us a little about your background & history in the leisure marine history. I come from Hull, England, where my early life had no connection to the world of yachting. Growing up, I didn’t have much exposure to water activities, especially considering the river Humber’s nature. However, at the age of 19, I made a significant decision to join the Royal Navy as an Aircraft Engineer. This decision led to an incredible seven-year journey, during which I was deployed to numerous
28
Following my service in the Royal Navy, I embarked on a six-month journey through Europe and Asia, absorbing the diverse cultures and experiences this vast continent had to offer. Subsequently, I took on a role at RAAF Edinburgh, where I was involved in training new Aircraft Engineers for up to six months. However, at the end of this period, I made a life-altering decision to relocate to the captivating island of Phuket, Thailand. I started my journey in this sector with Master Liveaboards, based in Phuket. Over time, I rose through the ranks to become a Sales Supervisor, overseeing yachts in captivating locations like the Galapagos, Indonesia, French Polynesia, and more. After four enriching years with Master Liveaboards, I embraced a new opportunity at Simpson Yacht Charter. Initially, I joined Simpson Yacht Charter as the Charter Sales Manager for Phuket, overseeing a fleet of seven yachts. Over the course of three years, our
Phuket fleet has grown to 13 yachts, and my role now extends to handling inquiries from around the world, excluding Hong Kong and China. My unconventional entry into the yachting industry has given me a diverse perspective, drawing from a range of experiences in various sectors. At Simpson Marine, my primary role is to ensure the efficient operation of the charter sales and operations aspects of our business. Concurrently, I am committed to enhancing our customer service offerings, ensuring that every client’s experience is nothing short of exceptional. Additionally, I work closely with yacht owners and prospective buyers, facilitating the process of integrating their vessels into our charter fleet. Please tell us about the range of boats that Simpson Marine has available to charter in Phuket? Our charter fleet in Phuket boasts an impressive range of vessels, catering to various preferences and needs. We currently have a diverse selection of 13 yachts available for charter, including: Lagoon 400 Lagoon 40s Lagoon 42s Lagoon 46 Lagoon 52s Azimut 55E Lagoon 620s Superyachts ranging from 111ft, 118ft to our crown jewel, the 144ft vessel.
Phuket, in particular, has emerged as a fantastic cruising ground for superyachts, and we’ve witnessed a significant surge in our superyacht charter fleet over the past year. This growth reflects the allure of this remarkable destination for luxury yacht charters. These yachts represent the pinnacle of luxury and are designed to provide an unforgettable charter experience. Whether you’re seeking a sleek and nimble catamaran or a spacious superyacht, our fleet has you covered. Moreover, our charter services extend beyond the confines of Phuket. We have the capability to assist you with charters regionally and even internationally, ensuring that your dream voyage becomes a reality, no matter where your desired destination lies. What makes the cruising grounds in this region so special? Having traveled extensively around the world, I can confidently say that while the Mediterranean boasts incredible islands and a rich history, Thailand holds its own unique charm that sets it apart. The cruising grounds in this region are truly exceptional for several reasons. First and foremost, the topography of Phangnga Bay is globally renowned. Iconic spots like Koh Hong and Koh Phanak, along with the breathtaking views of Phangnga from Samet Nagshe, are nothing short of fascinating. It’s no wonder that this region served as
the backdrop for iconic James Bond films, adding to its allure. Moving south, Krabi province opens up with its mesmerizing islands and the captivating Railay Beach area, creating a cinematic setting for any yachting adventure. The allure of exploring islands and locations featured in James Bond films is a unique and unforgettable experience. The journey can continue even further south to Koh Lipe, marking the southernmost Thai island, offering a sense of discovery and serenity that’s hard to find elsewhere. But it’s not just the west coast that’s enchanting. The east side of Thailand offers its own treasures, including Koh Chang and Koh Samui, among others. In essence, the cruising grounds in this region offer a remarkable blend of natural beauty, pristine beaches, and a diverse range of destinations that can cater to every traveler’s desires. It’s a place where you can live out your own James Bond adventure while experiencing the genuine warmth and hospitality that Thailand is known for. Where do you recommend sailing to in this area taking into account time constraints? When it comes to making the most of a limited timeframe, we have some fantastic recommendations for sailing adventures in Thailand. For a day trip, your options are quite exciting. We suggest considering a sailing catamaran voyage to Phangnga Bay, departing from Ao Po Marina. This journey
typically takes around 90 minutes and allows you to explore the stunning beauty of Phangnga Bay in a day. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a day trip with a bit more speed, you can opt for a motor yacht or power catamaran adventure to Phi Phi or Ratcha Island. The travel time to Phi Phi or Ratcha is approximately 2 hours each way, making it manageable for a day trip. Now, for those with a little more time to spare, a three-day adventure opens up even more possibilities. Sailing catamarans can comfortably take you to Ratcha and Phi Phi for overnight trips, allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of these destinations. However, if you find yourself with the luxury of time, we highly recommend considering a weeklong itinerary that takes you down to Lipe and back. This extended journey offers an incredible experience, allowing you to fully embrace the wonders of Thailand’s coastal regions. It’s a voyage that promises unforgettable memories and a deeper connection with this captivating part of the world. Ultimately, the choice depends on your timeframe and the type of experience you seek, whether it’s a quick day trip or a more immersive multi-day adventure.

Processing can be lengthy the first time, but gets easier. CLEARANCE FORMALITIES FOR MYANMAR / ANDAMAN ISLANDS
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands
MYANMAR Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is one of the last untouched cruising grounds in the world. The Mergui Archipelago, located 120 nm north of Phuket, contains around 800 densely forested and mountainous islands that are surrounded by tropical reefs. Most of these islands are uninhabited and remain in their pristine and natural state. Wildlife is prolific both above and below the water, although dynamite fishing is beginning to spoil some reefs. The native inhabitants are nomadic sea gypsies who choose to live aboard their uniquely crafted wooden boats. Surviving out of the sea and on wild game from the islands, and preferring to keep to themselves, these people remain little changed by the modern world. PERMITS Permission to cruise the Mergui Archipelago must be applied for to Myanmar Tours and Travels (MTT) in Yangon at least 30 days before arrival (for more information visit https:// www.noonsite.com/place/myanmar-burma/ formalities/). Alternatively permits can be obtained from yacht agents in Phuket (see directory of services at the back of this guide). Fees vary depending on the number of crew/ passengers and the intended length of stay. It is compulsory to take a Burmese guide onboard while the vessel is in Burmese waters.
Port Blair
ANDAMAN ISLANDS The Andaman Islands are a territory belonging to India. Forming part of the Andaman and Nicobar chain, they are situated in the Bay of Bengal 420 nm northwest of Phuket. The Andaman and Nicobar chain consists of 572 islands, most of which are uninhabited, densely forested and fringed by stunning coral reefs. All foreign nationals required a permit (RAP - Restricted Area Permit) to visit the Andaman Nicobar Islands, which is easily available on arrival at Port Blair by flight or ship from the Immigration Authorities for 30 days subject to availability of valid visa. The climate is tropical with medium to heavy rain during the monsoon season (May to October) and clear dry periods through the hot season (December to April). The population is hugely varied including Malay, Indian, Pygmy and Aboriginal, most of who live in and around the capital city of Port Blair. The rest of the islands are speckled with small villages and stunning scenery.

Gulf of Thailand The southern border of Thailand, close to Phuket, is some 400 miles north of the Equator at about 7 degrees N. The famous Doldrum Belt stretches from the equator north and south by 600 miles, or 10 degrees. In this belt, the wind and weather are unpredictable since it is the meeting of the southerly winds in the Northern Hemisphere and the northerly winds in the Southern Hemisphere. Koh Samui lies right in the northern limit of the Doldrum Belt, so for half the year it is clear, and half the year it’s inside the belt. North of Samui you are clear of the Belt at all times of the year, but subject to the monsoon winds that blow for half the year from the southwest and the other half from the northeast. In the northeast monsoon, you get drier winds blowing off the continent of Asia with crystal clear days and flat seas in the lee of the land mass. In the southwest monsoon, you get a bit more swell and a southwest wind that has picked up moisture from the Indian Ocean. This time sees more showers and squalls but plenty of good sailing wind.

Koh Kood at 105sqkm is the second largest island in Trat Province, has ample anchorages is accessible only by water. Ao Yai Village (where the Flotilla stopped on the third night) is the last Thai fishing village before you hit Cambodian waters, and is inhabited by many Cambodian fishermen. Koh Mak is the third largest island in Trat Province and covers 13sqkm. It is surrounded by small islands (Koh Kham lies due west off the northern tip and is joined to Koh Mak by a sandbar). It has been inhabited for over 100 years, and coconut farming is the island’s primary occupation. Trat is only 50 minutes by air from Suvanabhumi. From there it’s a short van ride to the Laem Ngop pier, where you can take a ferry across to Koh Chang, the largest in a group of 40 islands stretching over 30 miles to the crystal-clear waters to Koh Kood. Koh Chang is the best-preserved holiday destination in Thailand as 70% of it is still virgin rainforest, but that may not last long.

Around the Andaman Sea On the next page we list the names and contact numbers of charters companies on Phuket you can contact. Here, we give a couple of good examples of what you can expect on a charter around the Andaman Sea. Starting from Ao Po, Boat Lagoon, Yacht Haven and Royal Phuket Marina, all on Phuket’s east coast, you could head north to Phang Nga Bay via Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi to the east. Both are eco-friendly islands where locals still enjoy a relatively unspoiled way of life. Up to the north in Phang Nga Bay float around its more than 120 strange looking “islands” soaring majestically skyward, explore the many hongs (caves), go snorkelling at Kai Island to hand feed the fish and then head off to Krabu. Krabi is one of Thailand’s classic southern provinces with its idyllic islands and tropical jungle. Call in at Krabi Town or Ao Nang for provisions and a day onshore. Then head south to Phi Phi Islands off Phuket’s south east where you have six islands to sail/motor around within a national park. Famous for “The Beach” movie, Phi Phi offers great sightseeing, beaches and reefs for snorkelling and
74
diving. Along the way encounter a myriad of small islands to explore. From Phi Phi you could head for Phuket’s west coast beaches via Promthep Cape at the foot of the islands, anchoring at one of Asia’s top beaches, beautiful Nai Harn, then head up the coast stopping off at Kata, Karon, Patong, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao and Nai Thon beaches and finishing at Mai Khao in the northwest. Just for fun head further south of Phuket to Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi, two epic charter destinations noted for their secluded bays, swimming, snorkelling or diving. There are private beaches and top resorts. After all this southern sailing, If adventure calls keep going north to the Similan Islands, off Phang Nga’s west coast. More than 80,000 rai of National park, the Similans have been rated one of the 10 loveliest places on earth and one of the best scuba diving sports in the world.

BOAT CHARTER If you’re planning a cruising holiday in Thailand, or you’re already here and looking to charter a yacht for a day or longer...where to start? There are many professional yacht charter operators (see the advertisements in this guide) offering a wide variety of sizes, sail and power for charter. Below are a few tips and things to consider when planning your charter. TYPE OF YACHT: Sail or Power? It really depends on what you are planning to do, where you are planning to go and for how long. Also, do you plan to character bareboat or crew? These are the basics you need to decide upon before you research any further. SIZE: It may not be everything, but it’s important. If you are a family or group planning a multi-day charter, then you will need accommodation enough for you all. And if you are planning on lots of on-board sun tanning, then lots of deck space is a must. WHERE TO GO? A charter agent will be able to offer some advice on this, but do some research online into good sailing destinations in the waters around where you want to go. It’s also important to know where you can take on fuel, water, provision if on an extended charter. INSURANCE: Ensure there is comprehensive insurance for the yacht and all onboard. And if you are chartering to enter one of Phuket’s regattas, ensure insurance is sufficient and covers this also. PROVISIONING: This is a service offered by many charter agents, but best to check and plan ahead. You don’t want to run short of your favorite bubbly while out on the seas. CHARTER AGENT: The one you will choose will depend on many of the above and the service provided. There is a good selection of professional agents and many private individual charterers in Thailand.

PHUKET Phuket is still the hub for chartering yachts in Southeast Asia. There are many options to charter a sailing or motor yacht, from day trips to fully crewed superyacht cruising. With a vast archipelago and plenty of untouched beached within an easy sail of Phuket, the island has been attracting an increasing number of boaters interested as a marine holiday destination. All four of the island’s main marinas recently increased the numbers of berths they offer visiting yachts, and every year more vessels are made available for guests to charter, either on day trips or for longer excursions to outlying islands and reefs. The Andaman Sea around Phuket is becoming one of the world’s premier sailing destinations, “the Caribbean of the East”. Stunning marine areas such as Phang Nga Bay, sheltered cruising. Close to Phuket, the Racha Islands and Naka Islands are great day trip options with good snorkeling and stunning beaches. Slightly further from Phuket, the famous Phi Phi Islands are a popular tropical hotspot, while Krabi’s limestone seascapes are stunning. Larger vessels tend to strike out for more distant archipelagoes, and Phuket is a perfect base for voyages to the Similan Islands, Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago or even India’s remote and therefore pristine, volcanic Andaman Islands. Those looking to charter a sailing or motor yacht from Phuket have a range of options available to them that covers everything from bareboat flotilla sailing to fully-crewed superyacht cruises. These luxury cruises are77 offered by many companies with departures from all marinas in Phuket.
BOAT CHARTER Here are a few examples of destinations and cruising grounds you might want to add to your bucket list. Very popular with tourists, the one-day cruises are a perfect way to get a first experience in cruising the Andaman Sea. One-day cruises on a traditional Chinese junk such as June Bahtra, will take you to the amazing scenery of Phang Nga Bay in serenity and calm. Cruises usually include a stop at Koh Pannyi, a Sea Gypsy village perched on stilts, and a visit to James Bond Island, the backdrop for the 007 movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’. For a little romance, sunset cruises are an all-time favorite and most include a dinner on board. From dinner cruises on
a traditional Thai junk such as Ayodhaya to Banyan Tree’s traditional long tail boats, you can see the beauty of sunset at sea; a truly memorable experience. One example of an ideal two-day itinerary would be as follows: On the first day, you will cruise to Phang Nga Bay with its startling limestone rock formations rising vertically out of the sea, enjoy a stop at James Bond Island with an opportunity to kayak in hongs (rooms) inside the limestone islands and through caves. On the second day, you will be on your way to the gems of the Andaman Sea, the Phi Phi Islands.
BOAT CHARTER The first stop is at Monkey Bay (Ao Ling) on Phi Phi Don where, perhaps, you could enjoy snorkeling on the tropical reef of Hin Klang. Then on to Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Pai) which is known for its crystal-clear waters, before heading to Phi Phi Don for lunch. Last but not least, you will spend the rest of the day at Maya Bay, location of the film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. At sunset, you cruise back to Phuket. Chartering a sailing yacht with a professional captain, crew and a cook is one more way to get a feel for cruising. These luxury cruises are offered by many companies with departures from all marinas in Phuket. No sailing experience is required, just the desire to enjoy the peace and quiet of the ocean. The “Robinson Crusoe” feeling in the evenings when the day-trippers are long gone, the stunning sunsets and the meals on board prepared by a dedicated cook, all add in to make this an unforgettable experience. For rather more advanced sailors, charter boats are available at all marinas in Phuket, as well as on yachts moored in protected bays around the island. All provide a yacht tender to get ashore and will arrange for provisioning based on your choice from an extensive list, unless you want to do your own given the vast array of shop, supermarkets and delicacy shops on the island.
CHARTERING THROUGHOUT THAILAND Although Phuket is still the charter hub of Thailand, there are plenty of other options available to rent a sail or powerboat in Thailand. Aside from goggling and getting a recommendation by word of mouth a good rule of thumb is to check with the marina office in any location as they will be able to recommend a number of trustworthy operators who use their marina to pick up and drop off customers/passengers. Examples of this are Racer Marina in the Hua Hin area; Riverdale Marina on the Chao Phraya River and the vast Ocean Marina complex in Jomtien. One particular company worth noting is Island Spirit (groupislandspirit.com). They have offices in Ocean Marina and Phuket’s Yacht Haven & Boat Lagoon marinas, but they also have bases at Ao Salakphet in Koh Chang and in Bophut in Koh Samui. No other charter company in the country has such a far-ranging service.

FISHING CHARTERS Deep-sea fishing off the coast of Thailand has long been a must experience for foreign anglers who can enjoy all that Thailand has to offer onshore while taking in their favourite pastime as well. As always, perform your due diligence as it’s better to go with a recommended charter company. Your choice is going to hinge on the type of fish you are chasing (different seasons for different species of fish); along with the time and money you have to spend.
THAILAND FISHING SPOT PHUKET There are endless spots where you can reel in fish around Phuket. However, the main action takes place around the offshore islands of Ko Racha Yai and Ko Racha Noi. In the waters surrounding them, you’ll get the opportunity to reel in anything from Billfish, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi to GT, Amberjack, Grouper, and many other species. There are also numerous freshwater lakes you can fish in Phuket. Most local guides you pair up with will offer help with transportation from the city. Some even fish the lakes that are an hour or two away from Phuket, all depending on which particular freshwater giant you want to reel in.
But nowadays, tourists and Thais alike, do not have to spend a lot of money to enjoy peace and quiet while fishing. Fish ponds/parks (catch and release) have sprung up all over the country. Just google them in the area in which you are staying
KHAO LAK Khao Lak is a saltwater angler’s dream. Offshore, the Simian Islands and fish aggregation devices surrounding them make that dream come true. This means only one thing – a treasure trove of fish. You can reel in Marlin, Sailfish, monster Giant Trevally, and numerous other big game fish in this part of Thailand.
82
PATTAYA Its favorable position, on the eastern coast of the gulf, means you’ll have an easy time getting to all the local fishing grounds. In them, you’ll get the opportunity to catch most of Thailand’s saltwater fish, including Grouper and Snapper, Pompano, Amberjack, Barracuda, and Mahi Mahi. If you’re really lucky, you’ll even see Sailfish and Marlin gobble up your bait.
BANGKOK the city is also an excellent starting spot for fishing trips. It’s situated close to the north coast of the Gulf of Thailand giving you the opportunity to explore its bountiful waters. The usual species you’ll get to reel in fishing from Bangkok are Barracuda, different species of Snapper, Kingfish, Jacks, and more. Interestingly, you don’t necessarily have to head into the gulf to get your hands on saltwater fish. There are private ponds just outside Bangkok that are stocked with Grouper, Snapper, and Barramundi. There are lakes all over the city hosting record-worthy Catfish, Carp, Arapaima, and more. At any of these, you’ll get your shot at experiencing the battle of a lifetime.
SAMUI ISLAND Koh Samui is deeper in the gulf, giving anglers easier access to offshore fishing grounds. This means you’ll have a better chance of reeling in pelagic species such as Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, and Billfish. Also, believe it or not, there are freshwater lakes even here. As elsewhere, they’re full of Arapaima, monster Catfish, Carp, and more. We’ve gone over the fish you can catch and where you can fish, but remember, Thailand is a vast country. There are many more hidden angling gems you could discover in this land. What’s certain, though, is that Thailand is home to some of the most exhilarating fishing on the planet. All that’s left to do is figure out which monster you want to wrestle first, and plan your adventure!

DIVING CHARTERS For many years Thailand has been a firm favourite, both with hard-core divers who come to dive some of Asia’s best sites, and also with holiday-makers and backpackers, who know that a few days of diving here will add hugely to their experience in the country.
Scuba diving in Thailand is not limited to one particular area but most of the top spots are on the west coast, which runs down from Myanmar to Malaysia, with dive sites of world-renown such as those of the Similan Islands, as well as Richelieu Rock, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, most of which now enjoy national marine park status. You can cruise the season fantastic well-run liveaboards or stay in one of the fantastic beach resorts in the top tourist coastal regions, such as Phuket, Khao Lak, the Phi Phi Islands, Krabi or Koh Samui, enjoying some great day-trip diving without compromising on comfort or quality. The Andaman Sea is crammed with colourful coral and tropical marine life, set around some stunning tropical islands, and is characterised by sites such as the huge submerged boulders of the Similans and the chance to swim with whale sharks, leopard sharks and manta rays. However, the diving is so diverse in Thailand that there is really something for everyone and a trip to suit every budget. For more info visit Dive the World (www.dive-the-world.com). MARINE MAMMALS IN THAILAND
86
Phuket’s marine biological research centre has published a poster of cetaceans (whales, dolphins & porpoises) it believes are present in Thai waters. This lists 22 species, the largest being the fin whale, growing to 27 metres and the smallest, the finless porpoise, just 1.9 metres. Many of these species are rare in these waters, and their inclusion in the list might have been based on just one or two positive sightings over many years. The average visitor taking to the sea here has a good chance of spotting the most common of the marine mammals here, the bottle-nose dolphin. Sighted in Burmese waters adjacent to Thailand, were three different species of cetacean: bottle-nose dolphins in abundance,Indopacific humpback dolphins and a single Byrd’s Whale. On another occasion there was a single killer whale, or Orca, sighted on a return trip from the Similan islands.
Bottle-nose dolphins are quite common in the waters between Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands, the most likely spot for visitors to see them. Divers heading for the Similan islands will more than likely cross paths with dolphins, which sometimes delight passengers when they surf in a boat’s bow wave. In addition to the whale-dolphin family, the Andaman coast is home to a small remnant population of dugongs, a marine mammal closely related to the American manatee. There gentle creatures, sometimes called sea cows because they graze the sea grasses in shallow water, grow to 500 kilogrammes.
TOP DIVING LOCATIONS SIMILAN ISLANDS
Ask anyone who knows about the region and the first place they will mention is the Similan Islands. This small collection of islands set in the beautiful Andaman Sea are the jewel in the Thailand diving crown. Topography ranges from stunning rock formations and beautiful age-old gorgonian sea fans to colourful corals brimming with exotic marine life.
HIN DAENG / HIN MUANG
These 2 pinnacles away from the Thai mainland are perhaps the best Thailand dive sites outside of the Similans. Manta rays, whale sharks and a variety of other sharks make frequent visits to these two spots where the diversity and sheer numbers of fish can be breathtaking.
RICHELIEU ROCK
PHUKET, • PHI PHI AND • KRABI
This region is one of the most popular places on the Andaman coast for those diving in Thailand who wish to be land based. These are great locations if you wish to do diving daytrips or dive courses. You can dive some of the sites that lie between Phuket and Phi Phi from all three locations, such as Shark Point and Kingcruiser Wreck. If you are staying in Phuket the easiest dive sites to visit include Racha Noi and Racha Yai, featuring hard coral reefs, good visibility and myriad tropical reef fish. Anemone Reef is another popular spot near Phuket. Fields of anemones cover large areas of this submerged rock, supporting a huge clownfish population and providing great photo opportunities. Phi Phi is one of the most photogenic vacation destinations in Thailand.Beautiful bays, beaches and rock formations are matched by some wonderful dive sites. Local sites include Bida Nai and Bida Nok, twin sites covered in clams, gorgonian fans and sea whips. Enjoy the swim-throughs and channels and look out for leopard sharks, trevally, sweetlips, trumpetfish, cuttlefish and more. Krabi is another much loved destination, especially for those seeking to avoid the more crowded areas. From Krabi you can dive local sites featuring beautiful soft corals, a variety of schools of fish, great macro life and larger creatures including leopard sharks and large groupers. For divers based in Ao Nang or Krabi, the Phi Phi dive sites are also within range of a comfortable daytrip.
This pinnacle is one of Thailand’s premier and most popular dive sites and attracts scuba divers from all around the world. This large pinnacle rises steeply from a depth of 35m and is visited by liveaboards from Phuket and Khao Lak that usually dive it several times per trip. Credit: dive-the-world.com

DIVING CHARTERS THE GULF OF THAILAND The area is home to two wellknown islands: Koh Samui, & Koh Tao. The Gulf sites are a great option, particularly for diving in Thailand during March to September when it is low season on the west coast, and places like the Similan Islands are closed. From both islands you can visit one of the Gulf’s best dive sites, namely Sail Rock, a lonely granite pinnacle where the marine life of the area congregates. This includes schools of trevally and reef sharks. However, the chances of encountering a whale shark here are what makes this site famous. Koh Tao also has a number of local dive sites to visit and from Koh Samui you can also dive Chumphon Pinnacle, another excellent site where whale sharks are commonly sighted
The Thai Diving Season Although November through to April is the best time for optimum site conditions, the Thailand scuba diving season runs all year round. This is reflected in the period when
88
live aboards run to the Similan Islands (late-Oct to mid-May). The best time to see whale sharks is between February and May when there is a higher concentration of plankton. This time of year, is also the best for manta ray sightings although the number of sightings varies from year to year. The last few months of high season on the west coast, from February to May enjoy the warmest water temperatures with June to October being the coldest. However, the variation is not great and generally speaking water temperatures range throughout the season from 26 to 31°C. Visibility varies during the year but can often exceed 30m in peak season. Plankton blooms may reduce visibility but also bring in the biggest creatures. May to October is off season on the west coast of Thailand. Visibility is down. Surface conditions are more variable and there is a greater chance of rain. Few liveaboard trips operate and many of those that do are cancelled due to lack of numbers. The more remote dive sites like Hin Daeng and Richelieu Rock are sometimes inaccessible during this period. At this time of the year the Gulf of Thailand has its own high season for diving, making it a good alternative. Credit: dive-the-world.com

TOP DAY SAIL DESTINATION AROUND
THAILAND
The Rang Islands THE RANG ISLANDS The Rang Islands consist of Yai and Noi and are 4nm from Boat Lagoon Marina on Phuket’s the east coast. They are a great destination in either monsoon and have a stunning long sandy beach. During the high season there is a day resort offering different activities and a Thai restaurant. There is also a pearl farm on the shoreline.
Racha Island
You can anchor on either the southwest side of Rang Yai, or for more protection in the SW monsoon, in between the islands. Beware of the coral drop off and ensure you anchor with enough room to swing well away from it. Anchor in 6m to 10m.
THE RACHA ISLANDS The Racha Islands are 10nm south of Phuket and a great day sail from Chalong Bay. There is protection in either season but it’s probably best to visit in the NE monsoon when more of the beaches are accessible. There are beautiful walks through the islands passing local villages, resorts and bungalows of all qualities. Life here is relaxed and the islands are still pristine. There are snorkeling and diving opportunities around both the islands. Racha Yai Bay is the preferred anchorage in the NE Monsoon. You approach it from the Northwest and it has plenty of depth and a wide entrance. There are plenty of moorings but they are often taken by the day boats. Anchor in 10m to 15m of water on the sandy bottom. Please watch out for the coral heads. There are several restaurants to choose from on the beach and a 5-star resort, The Racha, to visit.
90
Chang Islands CHANG ISLANDS Koh Chang, (‘Elephant Island’ in Thai) is the third largest island in Thailand and part of the Mu Ko Chang National Park. Compared to the bustling Phuket and Samui islands, Koh Chang offers a more peaceful and laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking to avoid the crowds. This means Koh Chang is definitely worth visiting if you want to avoid mass tourism. There are some great beaches, a good range of accommodation and a wide choice of restaurants and bars.
THE KAI ISLANDS
THE NAKA ISLANDS
Koh Kai Nai and Nok are off the SW point of Koh Yao Yai and a great day trip out of the east coast marinas or Chalong.
The Naka Islands consist of Naka Yai and Noi. The islands can be found a few miles off the east coast just north of the Boat Lagoon. They are a great stop over when cruising between the Boat Lagoon and the Yacht Haven marinas. Both islands are inhabited by locals and Naka Yai has a large offshore pearl farm as well as a daily pearl farm demonstration.
Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to avoid the crowds. Nok is usually the busier though the day. There is great snorkelling and a real ‘desert island’ feel. There is a bar and a restaurant on both islands and deck chairs on Nok. Be very careful when anchoring as there is a lot of coral and a deep drop off. There are moorings but these are not advisable for larger vessels. If in doubt, anchor well off in 20+ metres of water.
To anchor off Naka Noi, keep an eye out for the pearl farm and anchor south of the jetty in 5m to 8m. At Naka Yai, find the long white sand beach south of the rocky outcrop on the east coast and keep an eye out for the coral drop off. Anchor in 8m to 10m.
The Naka Islands
The Kai Islands CORAL ISLAND (KOH HAE) Chalong is surrounded with islands that can be sailed around within a day and Coral Island is a good late lunch stop for day sails out of Chalong Bay. It can be busy with day trippers so it’s best to visit later in the afternoon. There are a few restaurants on the northern beach. The southern beach is much quieter but is only accessible at high tide.
LIPE ISLAND Ko Lipe is on the border of the Tarutao National Marine Park and is directly south of the larger islands Ko Adang and Ko Rawi, and about 50 km from the island of Ko Tarutao.
To anchor at the northern beach, find a spot in 8m to 10m on the sandy bottom. For the southern anchorage (not suitable in the SW monsoon) find the small bay and anchor in 15m on a rocky bottom.
The islands economy is largely centered around tourism, especially because of its white sandy beaches and scuba diving.

TOP OVENIGHT SAIL DESTINATIONS AROUND
THAILAND
PHI PHI ISLANDS AND SURROUNDINGS One of the landmark destinations in Thailand, Phi Phi island is not only famous for being a casualty of the infamous tsunami back in 2004, but also because of the huge amount of effort the country put into rebuilding the island to match the expectations and desires of new visitors and adventurers. Take your pick of the southern (Tonsai Bay) side or the northern side (Loh Dalam Bay) of the island and make your way to shore for a bit of nightlife and lots of tourists attractions, including trekking trails, plus a wide variety of restaurants. This is a popular place to stop off for a trip to the Viking Cave, where gatherers will demonstrate how bird’s nests are harvested for the popular soup, and to Phi Phi Leh, made famous by Maya Bay, which was used in the movie “The Beach”.
92
PHANG-NGA BAY Phang Nga bay is one of the most appealing locations when it comes to exploring the beauty surrounding Phuket Island. Indeed, its towering limestone formations are well known around the world and used as a background in movies such as “The Man with the Golden Gun” from the epic James Bond series. Koh Ping Gan (James Bond Island), as well as Koh Phanak are probably the first formations. The area is also the home of the sea gypsies, who retired to Koh Panyi years ago and maintain a traditional lifestyle. The village on stilts hosts a mosque, plenty of restaurants and tourist attractions, but is a must see as it is one of the less visited heritage sites Thailand has to offer and might also be the only place in the Bay where you’ll be able to buy supplies.
KRABI
SURIN ISLANDS
Krabi province offers numerous stunning islands to be explored. Head to Railay Beach for some picture perfect snorkelling (off koh Yawasan) and water skiing options. It also offers a few bungalows for those who want to step off the boat for a night and some nice chilled out restaurants. The area also accommodates 5-star travellers in highend resort hotels. A little further south, you’ll find Bamboo and Chicken Island, which are two very famous destinations for snorkellers and divers and can also host you in a little restaurant, only open during daylight hours. If you decide to head north and find yourself in proximity of Koh Chong Lat, you could eventually be visited by not so wild sea/mangrove otters that come out at dusk for a bit of fun and hunting!
Northwest of Phuket and a little further past the Similans are the Surin islands, also a favourite among diving aficionados for their underwater rock formations, such as the stunning Richelieu’s Rock and the reefs of Koh Tachai. The islands are not as busy as the Similans but remain a popular destination for those who have a bit more time. Please note this is also a national park and local rules and customs apply whenever visiting the local sea gypsy villages.
KOH YAO NOI
SIMILAN ISLANDS
Koh Yao Noi is a beautiful little island, so named after its shape, which means ‘little long island’. The place provides is a mix of upscale the local villages, where you’ll be able to buy local crafts. A floating jetty provides access to ferry passengers to Phuket so the island is also a popular day trip spot.
The Similan Islands are by far the most popular diving destination off Phuket and this is more than evident as soon as you arrive. Dive boats aplenty drop tourist divers into the big blue on a daily basis, but the Similans are nevertheless an amazing destination, allowing you to sail between a group of nine islands that form a pristine national park. A Bt500 fee is collected by a ranger (Ranger HQ on island no.8) when and if you wish to visit the island. This is also the place to anchor safely, although moorings get busy during the day.
There are several villages on the island and exploration is encouraged, provided visitors respect local customs and avoid bringing any alcoholic beverages ashore. Head to the northeastern side of the island and anchor in a protected bay with an access channel; you can dinghy for a candlelit dinner on the beach in front of the Koh Yao resort. Or head south to the next bay and enjoy the beauty of Villaguna, an exclusive village of luxurious villas that can accommodate you overnight and which offers incredible onsite facilities. Koh Yao Noi also has a modest clinic and a helicopter landing pad for emergency transfers back to the mainland airport or a Phuket hospital. You’ll also find ATMs, a post office and police station, although all seems to be very much the way it was 50 years ago.

One of the longest running international sporting events in Phuket, the Regatta generates a great deal of revenue for the local economy, bringing with it sports tourists with disposable income and around 40 million baht in tourism receipts, according to a survey by the organizers. It serves to the great benefit of Phuket’s hotels and restaurants, which enjoy a surge of custom before, during and after Regatta Week. Recognized throughout the eastern hemisphere as the premier sailing event of its kind, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta will once again put on a spectacular display of the finest sailing talent from around the world, competing in Andaman seas to win the “must-have” racing trophy in all of Asia, from December , 2023. In addition to the Regatta’s gravitas in attracting sailors from all over the world and some of the fastest racing vessels in the region, it is also an important event for the island in terms of development and commerce. Kevin Whitcraft, President of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee, spoke of the role this classic race plays in the development of Thailand as a sailing nation and sailing destination: “We are very proud that the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is able to take a regional role in contributing to the growth of the Thai sailing community and the yachting industry in Thailand, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s premier sailing destinations. It serves as an inspiration for new and improving Thai sailors, giving them a superb opportunity to experience international competition. From a wider perspective, it is hugely beneficial for Phuket, a part of Thailand famed for its beautiful surroundings, legendary hospitality and suitability for hosting Asia’s ultimate Regatta.” From the large keelboats and multihulls, the Regatta includes a number of small dinghies, including Optimists, Lasers and Toppers. The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing boat usable by children up to the age of 15
96
– an internationally recognized one-design youth racing class. The Laser is a simple, fast and fun one-man racing boat, an Olympic class, and is sailed in waters all over the world. The newly added Topper class is an 11-foot sailing dinghy, and has been a popular training and junior racing vessel for over 40 years. The inclusion of the smaller boats has played a part in the development of youth sailing in Thailand, encouraging more young sailors to take up the sport, and empowering the development of talented and aspiring skippers. “It is the belief of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee that the sport of sailing should be supported and developed wherever possible,” said Whitcraft, “and the hosting of a diverse class structure allows a great number of international teams of various sizes to take part. It creates a magnificent occasion with very close racing throughout the classes.” The Phuket King’s Cup is also famed for its series of legendary beachside parties, attracting over 1,500 partygoers who enjoy the live music, great atmosphere and food and drink provided by the Regatta’s sponsors. In this respect, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta also functions as a high-quality platform for event partners looking to grow their profile nationally and engage directly in an experiential way with the sports sailing community and the general public.
When travel, excursions and repeat visits during the year are factored in, the economic contribution of the event is likely to be in the region of 300 million baht. The event is strongly supported by local authorities and Phuket province, who work together with event organizers to make the Regatta an annual success for everyone on the island. Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the event is annually held during the first week of December. Under Royal Patronage, the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, it is organized by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket. Beyond Resort Kata will once again be the host venue. Excellent tropical sailing conditions, close racing and highly enjoyable beachside parties, reinforce the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta’s reputation as Asia’s premier sailing event.
