SAWASDEE KA
Welcome to the 20th Anniversary of the Phuket Marine Guide. For this, our 17th issue, we have created a special 2023 edition.
The Phuket Marine Guide was first published in 2003 by Ensign Media Co., Ltd., under the supervision of David Jamieson, Gareth Twist and Duncan Worthington and has been published every year since. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we stopped printing for two years (2021-2022) but we are returning with a new online format, prepared, edited and published by The Smart Global Company Limited.
Our goal is to become an educational and informative resource for anyone involved in Thailand’s leisure marine industry. We will continue to update our listings, and in the future, we plan to collect more information about the leisure marine industry throughout Thailand including, updates on marine-related activities in Krabi, Koh Samui, Pattaya and Bangkok.
We would like to send a big thank you to all our customers for supporting us for the past two decades. We sincerely hope that this guide will be an important resource for all members of the leisure marine community in Phuket and its nearby provinces.
Happy boating Joy and Jane
P.S. Your feedback is important to us. Please send any suggestions or comments to phuketmarineguide@gmail.com

Co-founder’s letter
Twenty years ago David Jamieson, Gareth Twist and myself talked about the need for a guide for and about Phuket’s marine industry. Inspired by others around the world, we wanted to create something that showcased the industry and the destination, but most of all was a tool for visiting yachties – a resource with contacts of related businesses and support services they needed.
A few coffees (and the odd beer) later, the Phuket Marine Guide was conceptualized.
The Andaman is a spectacular marine playground and in my opinion one of the best in the world. From the quiet coves and beaches (yes, they do still exist!) to the stunning topography, snorkelling, diving and more, there’s as much (or as little) to do as you like and not a minute that I’ve spent on the water has ever felt wasted.
Our aim with the Phuket Marine Guide was not to actually showcase the sailing area –that was being done in Thai and international lifestyle publications already, and for anchorage information Sail Thailand (now Southeast Asia Pilot) already did a sterling job – our goal was to create a guide to the facilities and services on Phuket and as a publisher my role was to realise the idea and make it happen.
While passionate about yachting and the marine industry – I was an active member of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta and what was then called the Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi Regatta committees at the time – I couldn’t claim to be knowledgeable about yachting. There was an industry full of experts and it was their businesses and services that we wanted to showcase in the Phuket Marine Guide.
If you remember when telephone books existed, then that was the core of our original concept – a source of information from marinas to tide tables to a comprehensive directory of marine businesses in Phuket. Over time it gained status as an essential resource for yachties in Phuket. We grew the format to include more long-form content and relevant information over time, but it never veered from its core concept and I’m happy to see that today it retains much of that original thinking and has expanded of its reach and an online presence.
While no longer involved in the Phuket Marine Guide I do still have a soft spot for it – I wish Joy and the current team great success, and look forward to seeing it develop over the next 20 years!
Duncan Worthington Co-Founder, Phuket Marine GuideTHE TYBA STAGES THAILAND CHARTER WEEK
The Thai Yachting Business Associ ation (TYBA) presents the Thailand Charter Week 2022 from 16 – 19 November 2022 at Phuket Yacht Haven Marina. The Thailand Charter Week (TCW) is a Business-to-Business event offered exclusively to professional charter brokers, charter agents, luxury travel and hotel operators and concierges. International industry professionals are invited to come and inspect some of Southeast Asia’s finest charter yachts and learn about the region’s best cruising grounds.
The program includes an opening party at the Deck Restaurant of the prestigious Phuket Yacht Haven Marina, hosting the show. The second and third day include a “yacht hop” to view the yachts, and presentations and destination seminars by local companies, which will help to sell Phuket yacht charters to visitors’ international clients The final day, a selection of charter yachts will offer visiting brokers a spectacular day-cruise through stunning Phang
Nga Bay. During the charter show, participants will be entertained with a variety of Thai cultural activities, fun parties, and leisurely lifestyle events, for a unique introduction to a true Thai experience.
The main aim of the show is to connect luxury charter brokers and travel agents with luxury charter yacht operators, and to promote the Andaman Sea as a stunning cruising destination, and Phuket as ASIA’S YACHTING HUB.
Yacht charter agents offering daily/ weekly charters in various budget ranges will be on hand as will established charter brokers and charter broker associations from overseas, plus local and regional professionals. The TCW will show a range of crewed charter yachts from locally based operators.
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, and a popular spot for visitors. With an extensive coastline featuring long stretches of sandy beaches, strung together by dramatic rock formations, it’s been attracting
people to its shores for decades. But Phuket and Thailand are also known as a favorite yachting hotspot. With about 1,000 safe marina berths in world-class marinas throughout Thailand, yacht builders, sales brokerage and dealerships, professional yacht services, repair and refit facilities, shipyards, an MCA-accredited maritime training facility and yacht management and other yachting related companies throughout the country, Phuket and Thailand can rightfully claim first place as Asia’s Yachting Hub From day-tour motor yachts, catamarans, sailing yachts and superyachts, there are a large variety of vessels for charter throughout the year.
The host venue, Phuket Yacht Haven is situated on the northeast coast of Asia’s premier island retreat, a mere 20 minutes to Phuket International Airport, Phuket Yacht Haven is an ideal location for travelers and sailors seeking the perfect port-of-call as a base and starting point to enjoy Thailand. Close to Phang Nga Bay and surrounding majestic limestone islands, Phuket Yacht Haven has deep-water access with 5-meter draft capacity allowing the marina to berth yachts of 100 meters. The marina can comfortably accommodate 320 vessels at present. PYH commenced the instal lation of a new dock for yachts up to 50m/165 feet, expected to be in operation by early January 2023.
PHUKET BRIEF
The Phuket Brief
Phuket is much more than just its famous beaches and consistently warm temperatures. Yachties and mainstream tourists alike will find an eclectic range of places to go, things and people to see all within a short traveling distance surrounded by the magnificent and colorful Phuket landscape.
Average temperatures range from 25-34C (77-93F) all year round, whether it be the wet season (July to October) when the southwest monsoon dominates, or the dry season (November to May), when temperatures drop to around a pleasant 25c. Phuket offers numerous opportunities for fun, entertainment, relaxing and chilling out as well as stunning sailing conditions.
For yachties, any one of the four top-class marinas offer facilities for mooring, maintenance and relaxation plus there is the opportunity to sail the traditionally calm and benign Andaman Sea into the hundreds of sheltered bays around Phuket’s 48km X 21km land mass plus the 32 small islands scattered nearby. Mudflats and mangroves abound as do protected and calm bays for overnighting. Despite the development of its coastline, Phuket is still covered in dense native bush running up to a ridge of mountains.
If you are coming ashore to enjoy Phuket; here’s a few ideas for the intrepid sailor to experience: kayaking in Phang Nga Bay; taking in a spectacular transgender cabaret; visiting beautiful Si no-Portuguese buildings in old Phuket Town; hitting the dozens of bars in Patong; marvelling at the stunning “wats” (temples); visiting the numerous islands in the glistening Andaman Sea; taking the kids to the wacky but fun Andamanda Phuket, Blue Tree, Carnival Magic Show, Phuket Fantasea Show, Siam Niramit, experiencing Muay Thai (Thai boxing), scuba diving and snorkelling among vibrant coral reefs, dining at any one of hundreds of restaurants or, above all, just lying on the pristine, white sand of more than 30 top beaches.

Thanaya Pleenaram
Managing Director at Sky Marine Group
Please tell us a little about your background & how you became involved in the yachting industry.
I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineer and Business Administration, and my first job after graduation was a marine engine sales engineer working for a Japanese company. I stepped into the boat business with a path that has been destined to progress. After starting my boat business in 2015, I have found that I can make a difference to others and
I believe I can benefit other people in the boat industry. I enjoy having a positive impact!
Please tell us about the scope of your company’s activities and the brands that you represent.
Sky Marine Group, With offices in Phuket and Pattaya, provides Yacht sales services for both new build and used yachts. Particularly yachts in in “Greenline:”, which has been a leader in hybrid and electric yachts for over 16 years to meet the needs of the clean energy yachts market that are in great demand in the market right now.
We are also a distributor of Premium Aglaze Boat Care products imported from England; a product that has a very good response from yachts owner worlwide. SkyMarine Group is also known for providing suitable boats for charter either in Phuket, Pattaya, Samui and the wider region.
Why do you think Thailand is such a great yachting destination?
Thailand is regarded as a country that is known internationally around the world for its beautiful seas and unique culture . It effectively and confidently dealt with the COVID19 pandemic which obviously
had a real impact on people and the industry. We have leant and grown and are now ready to thrive in the industry post-pandemic.
Thailand offers the most amazing sailing locations with the Andaman Sea, the Gulf of Thailand, and some of the most pristine diving locations in the world. Every area has Nature park staff spread the aid In case you need help effectively as well as the mooring area, which has been standardized to spread In many areas such as Phuket, Samui, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Koh Chang, etc., Parking spaces can be guaranteed. Boats from small to Super Yacht 24 hours a day, and this is just some of the reasons. Did you see that Thailand ready to respond And how is it a cruiser’s paradise?
What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of being a woman working in the yachting business.
It’s a very interesting question. Because most people may think that this business is more a business for men. Personally, I think that with my background working in the field of mechanical engineer
already, so I do not feel, Is it a problem or has a better point as a woman to work because either a woman or a man who do this business must have a reasonable knowledge of yachts and have a good connection. Not only the connection with customers , but the work, maintenance and contact with the yacht factory itself. It takes learning, experience and real determination. In the past, people didn’t know much about yachts, but now, with customers being able to study yacht information by themselves from various online sources, the broker must more detailed knowledge and experience.
Everyone can pretend to know about boats of they watch enough social media platforms. To close a boat deal requires the trust of the customers, Detailed knowledge and the integrity to be able to maintain the customer base for a long time.
It should never be seen as a”one time sell”, but more of a long term relationship with the customer.
How were you able to adapt your business and keep going during the pandemic?
It’s very difficult in times of crisis because we don’t know when it ends and how deep it will go. How to remain resilient is how to streamline your business in the face of the crisis, trying best to anticipate the various stages. Understanding that the events will affect all people, not just your customer base and your business is critical.
It is difficult to anticipate when the business will ‘re-float” so it is best to minimize expenses whilst not affecting service quality to existing and potential customers. Service qukaity and safet has to remain top priority. Finally ..faith in your customers, yourself and your business. Hard times will pass.
you will survive! Because the events that have happened affect all, but I personally believe that Everything will pass if we believe. and gradually solve the problems one by one Anything that can’t be solved, put it first and support what you can. Which I believe that many of you who are in this business are probably the same.
What more could the Thai government do to help grow the yachting business in the Land of Smiles
I feel that the Governement has helped grow the industry but not enough is being currently being done. We have some very rich people in Thailand and if we can attract them to the boat industry then word will spread internationally that we are a global destination. Ease of boat ownership , tax reductions and staging top level boat shows could help achieve this. Thailand needs to grow from the inside out; and for that we need both Thai investment and Government help.
Craig Holmes Managing Director
at C & C Marine (Thailand)
Why did you first come to Thailand, and why have you stayed?
Starting work in the Oil Industry in the early 90’s, Singapore was regarded as the Hub for travelling to work. Based on this and looking for a close by location to stay travel wise, Phuket was the first choice to start. But once in Phuket and meeting many other Expats living here, Phuket seemed like a great place to settle into and the rest as they say is history...
Please describe the scope of your company’s activities, mentioning what is unique about C & C Marine.
C & C Marine was started in Dec 2004, in part due to a wind down of the oil Industry at the time and talking with several people during that period there was a need for a Quality Engineering company in Phuket for the Pleasure Marine industry. Over the years C & C Marine has acquired several main Service Dealerships from some of the Industries top brands, namely MTU, YANMAR,ZF, KOHLER and JOHN DEERE, with quality of work as our main goal. To support the brands we hold, large stock of parts are carried in order to carry out repairs quickly. This is important especially when dealing with the Charter market.
What do you think makes Thailand such a special yachting destination?
As a Yachting Destination: Location in Asia with many islands north and south to visit. Facilities now available in Phuket for Yachting and also Phuket being a Major Tourist Location. With regards to facilities in Phuket, these are of a higher Quality than other parts of Asia, which attracts customers. With more planned Marina’s and Haul-out areas, this can only increase the attraction of Phuket and Thailand as a whole.
How were you able to adapt your business and keep going during the pandemic?
Keeping the costs down mainly, but also concentrating more on the Pleasure Market during the period. By doing this, we were able to maintain a full compliment staff during the 2yr pandemic period.
What are some of the main challenges facing the Thai leisure marine industry?
I think visiting vessel regulation need to be looked at. Making it easier for “Pleasure” boats to operate in Thailand waters, will bring more Vessels. This will in turn, create more revenue across all aspects of the Phuket (Thailand) economy, from Super Markets, Restaurants to Marine specific businesses.
What could the Thai government do to help stimulate the leisure marine industry?
Like above, regulations need looking at. Especially “SuperYacht” Charter, these are only seasonal, but they do bring in large revenue for all aspects of the Marine Businesses and Phuket as a whole. Allow more Marinas and Haul-out facilities. If quality facilities are here, customers will come, everyone benefits.
Nicholas Monges
Managing Director at Asia Global Yachting
Please tell us a little about your background & how you became involved in the yachting industry.
I used to work for the Royal Phuket Marina. I helped organize the Singapore and Thailand Yacht Shows and then I moved on to work for the Phuket, Singapore and Phuket Rendezvous boat shows.
I have always been around boats since I was a child and I love boating.
Please tell us about the scope of your company’s activities and the brands that you represent.
Asia Global Yachtin has many activities including new sales. We also act as a brokerage firm, do yacht charter and management, and we do yacht refurbishment and maintenance as well.
Why do you enjoy the yachting lifestyle so much?
I’ve been yachting since I was a young,I find it one of the most unique ways to get away from it all. For me, yachting means enjoying family time and relaxing at sea without anyone around.
What makes Phuket such an attractive yachting destination for your clients?
First, the water temperature, it is warm all year round. Then there’s the great weather, the white-sand beaches,
the water sports, many beautiful boats and the beautiful flora and fauna that make diving spectacular. In short, Phuket has everything for you.
How were you able to adapt your business and keep going during the pandemic?
We did suffer a lot like everyone else, but we did restructure our marketing to target Thais that could not travel abroad. We had many Thai clients came from Bangkok, Koh Samui and Surat Thani to charter boats in Phuket.
What can be done to make Thailand more visible as a superyacht destination?
First, the superyacht infrastructure on the island has to improve, so we can keep the superyachts here longer and compete with the Mediterranean and the Car ibbean. Then we need better marketing: we really need international yachting agents to highlight Thailand to their customers, not just as a stopover, but as a destination. We also need to make it easier for superyachts to charter here so that they can at least cover their costs.
Chanyo Manakulsawasd Country Manager
at V Yachts Asia
Please tell us a little about your background & how you became involved in the yachting industry.
I started my career as engineer at Caterpillar, having the opportunity to introduce Caterpillar to the Thai yachting market. I later joined MTU, taking the company into the commercial engine supply business.
Next, I took a break from yachting, and worked as Thailand Country Manager for Emerson, a manufacturer of industrial products before he returning to my passion, yachting. I was Operations Director of Azimut Yachts
Thailand, before taking on my role as Country Manager for V Yachts Asia.
Please tell us about the scope of your company’s activities and thebrands that you represent.
V Yachts Asia was established in 2021 as the exclusive dealer for Ferretti, Pershing and Riva Yachts in Thailand. We are ideally suited in a great location in mainland Southeast Asia, with the west coast featuring the beauty of the Andaman Sea and the east coast the glory of the Gulf of Thailand.
Now that the pandemic is over, how does the future look the yachting industry in Thailand?
We’ve been pleasantly surprised by the high demand for ultra -luxury yachts, supported both by expatriates and Thais, who still rely heavily on imported yachts. The Thai government is now open to developing the yachting industry in order to attract more high-end tourism to the country.
Why do you think Thailand is such a great yachting destination?
Thailand is Asia’s best leisure marine destination, the combination of our location and tropical climate makes Thailand ideal for pleasure yachting. We also have high-end yachting facilities, valuable skilled labor, and an awareness of how important and profitable the yachting industry can be. With its warm hospitality, and
extraordinarily beautiful boating, I believe that Thailand is the place where more and more yacht owners will come to enjoy their yachts and the lifestyle Thailand has to offer.
Are more Thais getting involved in the yachting industry?
You can now find more and more high-end luxury yachts in Thailand. This can be attributed to change in lifestyle fueled by the growth of high net-worth individuals, an increased interest in the leisure marine industry, and a surge in yacht tourism.
What is special about Thailand’s yachting infrastructure?
Thailand has a developed yachting industry, which includes five major marinas with more coming in 2023. There are also more than 20 yacht charter operators, 30,000 licensed captains and crew members and more than 800 permanently berthed yachts. The country’s yachting facilities are concentrated along the coast in southern Thailand. Important areas on Thailand’s Andaman coast include Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi provinces. The Gulf of Thailand offers the popular resort destinations of Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan, as well as coastal destinations such as Pattaya.
Overall, Thailand has more berths than Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia combined. The cost of rental, maintenance and services is also lower in Thailand.
MAINTENANCE AND MARINAS
MAINTENANCE AND MARINAS
Phuket is one of the best places in Southeast Asia for repair and maintenance services.
Services include mobile repairs and in-water repairs at any of the island’s marinas, and Full haul-out and refit service at the Boat Lagoon Marina, Royal Phuket Marina or one of Phuket Town’s slipways. There are also small yards, mainly in Chalong and Rawai that service the growing numbers of custom new builds of sailing and power craft.
There are four main marinas on the island; Ao Po Grand Marina; Phuket Boat Lagoon, Royal Phuket Marina and YachHaven Marina. You can take on fuel and water at any one of the marinas. You can also visit one of the fuel and water barges in Ao Chalong or in Patong.

Further up river, and the first shipyard you reach by road from Phuket Town, is Asia Marina. With a 100 tonne to 500 tonne travel lift, Asia Marina is an alternative for large vessels wanting to haul-out.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION & TIDE TABLES
CLEARANCE FORMALITIES
Immigration and customs formalities on Phuket are quite clear but beware that they are constantly changing. To assist you on arrival here are some key matters to consider and follow.
The AIS can be turned off in a marina, or on the hardstand, but failure to have the mandatory AIS will result in a substantial fine.
Ao Chalong Pier
Ao Chalong Pier (07o 49.08N, 98o 21.05’E)
iIn Ao Chalong Bay on Phuket’s southeast coast has a one-stop-shop checkin /out service housing immigration, and customs (hours 0800-1200; 1300-2000). Purchase a pier bus shuttle for Bt10. Check in with all three departments. No harbour clearance can result in a Bt5,000 fine. Even short trips outside Phuket must be cleared by the Harbour Master.
Check In: Check in at the information office on arrival. The on-line “check-in” for yachts has not yet been recognized so play it safe and visit all three relevant departments. Remember: take your passport, yacht registration (three copies of everything) plus the original of the zarpe (port clearance document) from your previous port. Processing can be lengthy the first time, but subsequent visits are easier.
AIS: Thailand has introduced the Automatic Identification System (AIS) or AIS Class B system. It must be active entering and leaving Thai waters.
Immigration: All crew and passengers must present photographs during clearance (in and out). Have three copies of papers and passports. Customs gives boats a six-month permit to remain before extensions can be applied for (up to two years). Regular checks are made to comply with Thai law. Once checked in crew and passengers can travel anywhere on Phuket. Check in advance what nationalities are eligible for 45-day visas. He/she will be registered as being in transit and will be issued with a 45-day stay.
Fees
Immigration: normal hours Bt200 inward and outward; Sat/Sun and Holidays: Bt500 inward, Bt200 departure.
Customs: normal hours nothing inward, Bt300 outward; Sat/Sun and Holidays: Bt800 inward, Bt1,000 outward.

Harbour Master: normal hours, nothing inward, Bt100 outward. Sat/Sun and holidays, no extra charges. Have the correct money to avoid complications. Receipts must be given.
Docking: Better to dock at a suitable anchorage rather than the unreliable pontoons at Ao Chalong. You can dinghy to the makeshift dinghy dock at the foot of the one-stop centre or dinghy into the beach. More changes are coming regarding leaving your boat in the country and going abroad, but these have not been finalised as of publication time.

CLEARANCE FORMALITIES FOR NEIGHBOURING REGIONS
The Mergui ArchipelagoMYANMAR
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is one of the last untouched cruising grounds in the world. The Mergui Archipelago, located 120 nm north of Phuket, contains around 800 densely forested and mountainous islands that are surrounded by tropical reefs. Most of these islands are uninhabited and remain in their pristine and natural state. Wildlife is prolific both above and below the water, although dynamite fishing is begin ning to spoil some reefs. The native inhabitants are nomadic sea gypsies who choose to live aboard their uniquely crafted wooden boats. Surviving out of the sea and on wild game from the islands, and preferring to keep to themselves, these people remain little changed by the modern world.
PERMITS
Permission to cruise the Mergui Archipelago must be applied for to Myanmar Tours and Travels (MTT) in Yangon at least 30 days before arrival (for more information visit https://www.noonsite.com/place/myanmar-burma/formalities/). Alternatively permits can be obtained from yacht agents in Phuket (see directory of services at the back of this guide). Fees vary depending on the number of crew/passengers and the intended length of stay. It is compulsory to take a Burmese guide onboard while the vessel is in Burmese waters.
ANDAMAN ISLANDS
The Andaman Islands are a territory belonging to India. Forming part of the Andaman and Nicobar chain, they are situated in the Bay of Bengal 420 nm northwest of Phuket. The Andaman and Nicobar chain consists of 572 islands, most of which are uninhabited, densely forested and fringed by stunning coral reefs. All foreign nationals required a permit (RAP - Restricted Area Permit) to visit the Andaman Nicobar Islands, which is easily available on arrival at Port Blair by flight or ship from the Immigration Authorities for 30 days subject to availability of valid visa. The climate is tropical with medium to heavy rain during the monsoon season (May to October) and clear dry periods through the hot season (December to April). The population is hugely varied including Malay, Indian, Pygmy and Aboriginal, most of who live in and around the capital city of Port Blair. The rest of the islands are speckled with small villages and stunning scenery.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islandsprovisioning in Phuket is excellent and can be found across the island.

MARINE ACTIVITIES

On the next page we list the names and contact numbers of charters companies on Phuket you can contact. Here, we give a couple of good examples of what you can expect on a charter around the Andaman Sea.
Starting from Ao Po, Boat Lagoon, Yacht Haven and Royal Phuket Marina, all on Phuket’s east coast, you could head north to Phang Nga Bay via Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi to the east. Both are eco-friendly islands where locals still enjoy a relatively unspoiled way of life.
Up to the north in Phang Nga Bay float around its more than 120 strange looking “islands” soaring majestically skyward, explore the many hongs (caves), go snorkelling at Kai Island to hand feed the fish and then head off to Krabu.
Krabi is one of Thailand’s classic southern provinces with its idyllic islands and tropical jungle. Call in at Krabi Town or Ao Nang for provisions and a day onshore.
Then head south to Phi Phi Islands off Phuket’s south east where you have six islands to sail/motor around within a national park. Famous for “The Beach” movie, Phi Phi offers great sightseeing, beaches and reefs for snorkelling and diving.
Along the way encounter a myriad of small islands to explore.
From Phi Phi you could head for Phuket’s west coast beaches via Promthep Cape at the foot of the islands, anchoring at one of Asia’s top beaches, beautiful Nai Harn, then head up the coast stopping off at Kata, Karon, Patong, Kamala, Surin, Bang Tao and Nai Thon beaches and finishing at Mai Khao in the northwest.
Just for fun head further south of Phuket to Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi, two epic charter destinations noted for their secluded bays, swimming, snorkelling or diving. There are private beaches and top resorts.
After all this southern sailing, If adventure calls keep going north to the Similan Islands, off Phang Nga’s west coast. More than 80,000 rai of National park, the Similans have been rated one of the 10 loveliest places on earth and one of the best scuba diving sports in the world.
BOAT CHARTERS
With a vast archipelago and plenty of untouched beached within an easy sail of Phuket, the island has been attracting increasing international interested as a marine holiday destination. All four of the island’s main marinas recently increased the numbers of berths they offer visiting yachts, and every year more vessels are made available for guests to charter, either on day trips or for longer excursions to outlying islands and reefs.
The Andaman Sea around Phuket is be coming one of the world’s premier sailing destinations, “the Caribbean of the East”. Stunning marine areas such as Phang Nga Bay, sheltered cruising.
Close to Phuket, the Racha Islands and Naka Islands are great day trip options with good snorkeling and stunning beaches. Slightly further from Phuket, the famous
Phi Phi Islands are a popular tropical hot spot, while Krabi’s limestone seascapes are stunning.
Larger vessels tend to strike out for more distant archipelagoes, and Phuket is a perfect base for voyages to the Similan Islands, Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago or even India’s remote and therefore pristine, volcanic Andaman Islands. Those looking to charter a sailing or motor yacht from Phuket have a range of options available to them that covers everything from bareboat flotilla sailing to fully-crewed superyacht cruises.
These luxury cruises are offered by many companies with departures from all marinas in Phuket
You’ re planning a crusing holiday in Phuket, or you’re already here and looking to charter a yacht for a day or longer... where to start? There are many professional yacht charter operators (see the advertisements in this guide) on Phuket offering a wide variety of sizes, sail and power for charter. below are a few tips and things to consider when planning your charter.
TYPE OF YACHT: Sail or Power? It really depends on what you are planning to do, where you are planning to go and for how long. Also, do you plan to character bare boat or crewed? These are the basics you need to decide upon before you research any further.
SIZE: It may not be everything, but it’s important. If you are a family or group planning a multi-day charter, then you will need accommodation enough for you all. And if you are planning on lots of on-board sun tanning, then lots of deck space is a must.
WHERE TO GO?: A charter agent will be able to offer some advice on this, but do some research online into good sailing destinations in the waters around Phuket. It’s also important to know where you can take on fuel, water, provision if on an extended charter.
INSURANCE: Ensure there is comprehen sive insurance for the yacht and all onboard And if you are chartering to enter one of Phuket’s regattas, ensure insurance is sufficient and covers this also.
PROVISIONING: This is a service offered by many charter agents, but best to check and plan ahead. You don’t want to run short of your favourite bubbly while out on the seas.
CHARTER AGENT: The one you will choose will depend on many of the above and the service provided. There is a good selection of professional agents and many private individual charterers on the island.
BOAT CHARTERS
Phuket is the hub for chartering yachts in Southeast Asia. There are many options to charter a sailing or motor yacht, from day trips to fully crewed superyacht cruising.
Here are a few examples of destinations and cruising grounds you might want to add to your bucket list. Very popular with tourists, the one-day cruises are a perfect way to get a first experience in cruising the Andaman Sea.
One-day cruises on a traditional Chinese junk such as June Bahtra, will take you to the amazing scenery of Phang Nga Bay in serenity and calm. Cruises usually include a stop at Ko Pannyi, a Sea Gypsy village perched on stilts, and a visit to James Bond Island, the backdrop for the 007 movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’.
For a little romance, sunset cruises are an all-time favourite and most include a dinner on board. From dinner cruises on a traditional Thai junk such as Ayodhaya to Banyan Tree’s traditional long tail boats, you can see the beauty of sunset at sea; a truly memorable experience.
One example of an ideal two-day itinerary would be as follows: On the first day, you will cruise to Phang Nga Bay with its startling limestone rock formations rising vertically out of the sea, enjoy a stop at James Bond Island with an opportunity to kayak in ‘hongs’ (rooms) inside the limestone islands and through caves.
On the second day, you will be on your way to the gems of the Andaman Sea, the Phi Phi Islands.
The first stop is at Monkey Bay (Ao Ling) on Phi Phi Don where, perhaps, you could enjoy snorkelling on the tropical reef of Hin Klang. Then on to Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Pai) which is known for its crystal-clear waters, before heading to Phi Phi Don for lunch. Last but not least, you will spend the rest of the day at Maya Bay, location of the film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. At sunset, you cruise back to Phuket. Chartering a sailing yacht with a professional captain, crew and a cook is one more way to get a feel for cruising. These luxury cruises are offered by many companies withdepartures from all marinas in Phuket.
No sailing experience is required, just the desire to enjoy the peace and quiet of the ocean. The ‘Robinson Crusoe’ feeling in the evenings when the day-trippers are long gone, the stunning sunsets and the meals on board prepared by a dedicated cook, all add in to make this an unforgettable experience.
On the following page is a list of companies with their website addresses for you to surf and find the cruise you want, whether it’s based on destination or on the type of sailing or motor yacht you prefer.
For rather more advanced sailors, boat charter boats are available at all marinas in Phuket, as well as on yachts moored in protected bays around the island. All provide a yacht tender to get ashore and will arrange for provisioning based on your choice from an extensive list, unless you want to do your own given the vast array of shop, supermarkets and delicacy shops on the island.

PHUKET HAS SO MANY TREASURES THAT FISHING IS ONE THAT IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED. WITH ITS BLUE SKIES,CRYSTAL CLEAR SEAS AND CONTINENTAL DROP-OFF, PHUKET OFFERS ANGLERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CATCH A 300LB PLUS MARLIN OR ENJOY A SAILFISH BONANZA!
Home to an amazing diversity of game fish, Phuket is a delight for novice and professional alike. Phuket is comparable with the best destinations in the world. Home to Marlin, Sailfish, Maha mahi, Wahoo, Barracuda and Tuna, to name but a few, the Andaman Sea is a fisher man’s playground. There are a number of operators offering day trips and extended liveaboard fishing excursions, all starting from Phuket. And for tackle, a number of well-equipped tackle shops can be found in Phuket Town and Chalong.
DAY FISHING HOT SPOTS
There are number of favoured fishing spots in Phuket, however, success depends on what time of year you go and the fishing techniques used. Below are a couple of the popular spots to go fishing within a day’s range from Phuket.
FISHING SEASONS
Different times of the year prove better than others for catching certain species of fish. For example, the tourist high sea son in Phuket (November - April) is a good time to fish for Sailfish, Giant Trevally, many of the Tuna family and King Mackerel. A popular spot for day-trips is the Racha Island group.
As the southwest monsoon arrives so do the Mahi mahi and Wahoo. However, the difference in seasons is less distinct with other species, which can be caught throughout the year.
Photo by Phuket Fishing ChartersRACHA ISLANDS
The Racha Island group is located south of Phuket and consists of two idyllic islands surrounded by crystal clear waters. Racha Yai and Racha Noi are perfect for those wishing to explore the beach, and those wishing to fish. Racha Yai is located 16km south of Phuket with Racha Noi a few kilo matres further. The body of water between the two islands holds almost every kind of fish that can be found in this region.
CONTINENTAL DROP-OFF
Situated southwest of Phuket, the continental drop-off can only be reached in a day by fast modern vessels. The drop-off has been formed as a result of plate tectonic shifts. At this point, the earth’s crust does not join at the same level, resulting in a huge drop-off where the water reaches depths of hundreds of metres. These depths are home to Marlin. September to December is a good time for Black Marlin.

DIVING CHARTERS
SOME OF THE BEST DIVE SITES IN THE WORLD LIE OFF THE COAST OF PHUKET IN THE ANDAMAN SEA. DUE TO ITS MODERN INFRASRUCTURE AND YEARROUND SAFE ANCHORAGES, PHUKET IS THE OBVIOUS GATEWAY TO THE MARINE NATIONAL PARKS IN WESTERN THAILAND AND THE MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO IN BURMA.
SIMILAN ISLANDS
About 60 nm north west of Phuket, these nine islands offer the clearest water, the whitest corals and beaches, and the most colourful marine life in the Kingdom. The diving environment ranges from huge boulder outcroppings, to gently sloping coral reefs, to deep submerged pinnacles. To the north, near the Myanmar (Burma) border, lie Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, the famous Richelieu Rock, and the Surin Islands. Each is a unique environment, well worth the extra effort to visit.
THE MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO
Travelling north past Richelieu Rock, you will arrive at the Mergui Archipelago, his torically part of Thailand (Siam), now gov erned by Myanmar. A remarkable group of over 800 islands, the archipelago has over 10,000 square miles of calm seas and uninhabited islands, and the diving and water sport possibilities here are almost immeasurable. However, the dive sites and islands lie far from any major port, and supplies are not avaiable, so a visit to this area requires more days at sea and forward planning.
ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS
This area, 450 miles to the northwest, is much like it was 100 years ago with very little deforestation and almost no active
fishing. Whilst the Andaman Islands are open for tourism, the Nicobar Islands are closed to all outsiders in order to protect the aboriginal peoples from outside harm or negative influence which could destroy their cultures. At least 10 days are necessary to visit these islands not counting travel time. Several dive boats in Phuket publish schedules and many sailing yachts are available for charter.
Diving around the southern parts of Phuket is also beautiful. Popular places such as Shark Point and the Phi Phi Islands offer incredible diving on most days. Daytrips are fun to these sites, while the other are as mentioned above generally require a mul ti-day liveaboard trip. However, Simalan Island day-trips are gaining in popularity with recently introduced faster dive boats.
It is impossible to see all that Thailand, Myanmar and the Andaman Islands have to offer in just one trip. People return re peatedly in order just to get a taste of it. Whether you have only a day, or a few weeks, make time to dive the Andaman Sea – it is one of the world’s treasures.

DESTINATIONS FROM Phuket
Racha Island
THE RACHA ISLANDS
The Racha Islands are 10nm south of Phuket and a great day sail from Chalong Bay. There is protection in either season but it’s probably best to visit in the NE monsoon when more of the beaches are accessible. There are beautiful walks through the islands passing local villag es, resorts and bungalows of all qualities. Life here is relaxed and the islands are still pristine. There are snorkeling and diving opportunities around both the islands. Racha Yai Bay is the preferred anchorage in the NE Monsoon. You approach it from the Northwest and it has plenty of depth and a wide entrance. There are plenty of moorings but they are often taken by the day boats. Anchor in 10m to 15m of water on the sandy bottom. Please watch out for the coral heads. There are several restaurants to choose from on the beach and a 5-star resort, The Racha, to visit.
THE RANG ISLANDS
The Rang Islands consist of Yai and Noi and are 4nm from Boat Lagoon Marina on Phuket’s the east coast. They are a great destination in either monsoon and have a stunning long sandy beach. During the high season there is a day resort offering different activities and a Thai restaurant. There is also a pearl farm on the shoreline.
You can anchor on either the southwest side of Rang Yai, or for more protection in the SW monsoon, in between the islands. Beware of the coral drop off and ensure you anchor with enough room to swing well away from it. Anchor in 6m to 10m.
THE KAI ISLANDS
Koh Kai Nai and Nok are off the SW point of Koh Yao Yai and a great day trip out of the east coast marinas or Chalong.
Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to avoid the crowds. Nok is usually the busier though the day. There is great snorkelling and a real ‘desert island’ feel. There is a bar and a restaurant on both islands and deck chairs on Nok.
Be very careful when anchoring as there is a lot of coral and a deep drop off. There are moorings but these are not advisable for larger vessels. If in doubt, anchor well off in 20+ metres of water.
THE NAKA ISLANDS
The Naka Islands consist of Naka Yai and Noi. The islands can be found a few miles off the east coast just north of the Boat Lagoon. They are a great stop over when cruising between the Boat Lagoon and the Yacht Haven marinas. Both islands are inhabited by locals and Naka Yai has a large offshore pearl farm as well as a daily pearl farm demonstration.
To anchor off Naka Noi, keep an eye out for the pearl farm and anchor south of the jetty in 5m to 8m. At Naka Yai, find the long white sand beach south of the rocky outcrop on the east coast and keep an eye out for the coral drop off. Anchor in 8m to 10m.
The Naka Islands
The Kai Islands
CORAL ISLAND (KOH HAE)
Chalong is surrounded with islands that can be sailed around within a day and Cor al Island is a good late lunch stop for day sails out of Chalong Bay. It can be busy with day trippers so it’s best to visit later in the afternoon. There are a few restaurants on the northern beach. The southern beach is much quieter but is only accessible at high tide.
To anchor at the northern beach, find a spot in 8m to 10m on the sandy bottom. For the southern anchorage (not suitable in the SW monsoon) find the small bay and anchor in 15m on a rocky bottom.
DESTINATIONS FROM Phuket TOP OVERNIGHT SAIL
PHI PHI ISLANDS AND SURROUNDINGS
One of the landmark destinations in Thai land, Phi Phi island is not only famous for being a casualty of the infamous tsunami back in 2004, but also because of the huge amount of effort the country put into rebuilding the island to match the expectations and desires of new visitors and adventurers. Take your pick of the southern (Tonsai Bay) side or the northern side (Loh Dalam Bay) of the island and make your way to shore for a bit of nightlife and lots of tourists at tractions, including trekking trails, plus a wide variety of restaurants. This is a popular place to stop off for a trip to the Viking Cave, where gatherers will demonstrate how bird’s nests are harvested for the popular soup, and to Phi Phi Leh, made famous by Maya Bay, which was used in the movie “The Beach”.
Phang Nga bay is one of the most appealing locations when it comes to exploring the beauty surrounding Phuket Island. Indeed, its towering limestone forma tions are well known around the world and used as a background in movies such as “The Man with the Golden Gun” from the epic James Bond series. Koh Ping Gan (James Bond Island), as well as Koh Phanak are probably the first formations. The area is also the home of the sea gypsies, who retired to Koh Panyi years ago and maintain a traditional life style. The village on stilts hosts a mosque, plenty of restaurants and tourist attractions, but is a must see as it is one of the less visited heritage sites Thailand has to offer and might also be the only place in the Bay where you’ll be able to buy supplies.
KRABI
Krabi province offers nu merous stunning islands to be explored. Head to Railay Beach for some pic ture perfect snorkelling (off koh Yawasan) and water skiing options. It also offers a few bungalows for those who want to step off the boat for a night and some nice chilled out restau rants. The area also accom modates 5-star travellers in high-end resort hotels. A little further south, you’ll find Bamboo and Chicken Island, which are two very famous destinations for snorkellers and divers and can also host you in a little restaurant, only open dur ing daylight hours. If you decide to head north and find yourself in proximity of Koh Chong Lat, you could eventually be visited by not so wild sea/mangrove ot ters that come out at dusk for a bit of fun and hunting!
SIMILAN
The Similan Islands are by far the most popular diving destination off Phuket and this is more than evident as soon as you arrive. Dive boats aplenty drop tourist divers into the big blue on a daily basis, but the Similans are nevertheless an amazing destination, allowing you to sail between a group of nine islands that form a pristine national park. A Bt500 fee is collected by a ranger (Ranger HQ on island no.8) when and if you wish to visit the island. This is also the place to anchor safely, although moorings get busy during the day.
SURIN ISLANDS
Northwest of Phuket and a little further past the Simi lans are the Surin islands, also a favourite among diving aficionados for their underwater rock forma tions, such as the stunning Richelieu’s Rock and the reefs of Koh Tachai. The islands are not as busy as the Similans but remain a popular destination for those who have a bit more time. Please note this is also a national park and local rules and customs apply whenever visiting the local sea gypsy villages.
KOH YAO NOI
Koh Yao Noi is a beautiful little island, so named after its shape, which means ‘little long island’. The place provides is a mix of upscale the local villages, where you’ll be able to buy local crafts. A floating jetty provides access to ferry passengers to Phuket so the island is also a popular day trip spot.
There are several villages on the island and exploration is encouraged, provided visitors respect local customs and avoid bringing any alcoholic beverages ashore.
Head to the northeastern side of the island and anchor in a protected bay with an access channel; you can dinghy for a candlelit dinner on the beach in front of the Koh Yao resort. Or head south to the next bay and enjoy the beauty of Villaguna, an exclusive village of luxurious villas that can accommodate
you overnight and which offers incredible onsite facilities. Koh Yao Noi also has a modest clinic and a helicopter landing pad for emergency transfers back to the main land airport or a Phuket hospital. You’ll also find ATMs, a post office and police station, although all seems to be very much the way it was 50 years ago.

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is a competition steeped in history and magic. It was established to celebrate a most auspicious occasion; in 1986, a number of Thailand’s yachting fraternity met to discuss what they could do as a special tribute to His Majesty the King’s forth coming fifth cycle, or 60th birthday, for the following year on December 5, 1987.
History of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta
ting off on a downwind course towards Phuket. Shortly after clearing the starting line the fleet bore down and popped their spinnakers, a spectacular scene for Phi Phi Island well before The Beach was filmed on that exact location.
After careful discussion, it was decided to hold a royal regatta. Phuket was to become the glit tering location for this sailing spectacle; the first such event held in the beautiful waters of the Andaman Sea.
In the early years, the Phuket King’s Cup started on Phi Phi Island as yachts arriving from Malaysia could check in and clear customs and immigra tion there. After registration, day one racing was around the buoys with a welcome party and prize-giving ceremony in the evening. On the second race day, the fleet set out on the legendary Andaman Sea Race with a starting line between Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Le, set
The Phuket King’s Cup started with a small fleet of keelboats and a number of Hobie Cat 16s and Lasers, which were shipped down from the RVYC. Beach cats joined in the racing at Phi Phi Island while the La ser division participated later in the week from Nai Harn. However, for safety reasons, both the beach cats and din ghies were dropped because of the fast-growing keelboat fleet and its longer courses, which dominated the regatta for over the next two decades.
sailing was developed in Sattahip at the Royal Thai Fleet Sailing Club and local youth were given an opportunity to sail at virtually no cost. This was considered to be a suitable program for Phuket, one of the world’s best sailing grounds. To bring sailing closer to the Thai people, youth must have an opportunity to learn and sail in their community. And that is what the Phuket King’s Cup Committee has tried to do through its racing series.
At that time, sailing was thought of as an expensive sport and remote for many Thai people. And despite Thai land’s long coastal area there were not many active sailing clubs where beginner sailing courses were available. How ever, a model for community
By building his own sailboat and winning a gold medal alongside his daughter at the SEA Peninsular Games, HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej inspired many young Thai sailors and his legacy lives on through both the Phuket King’s Cup and its dinghyseries.
Today, the Phuket King’s Cup is one of Asia’s most pres tigious and fiercely contested regattas and there is always a large bareboat charter divi sion which sees crews from around the world fly in and charter locally-based yachts.

Few islands can boast of such an abundance of sandy beaches and clear waters as Phuket. The winding coastal roads along the west coast of this 540-square-km island offer stunning views and easy access to some of the world’s finest beaches.
Whether you want to sample the frenetic pace of Patong or fine solitude on a remote stretch of sand in the north, Phuket’s beaches have it all for the sun seeker. Many also have nearby restaurants or wandering food sellers, so there is no need to interrupt your bronzing for lunch. Just remember to keep applying the sunscreen! The monsoon rains of May-October can bring unpredictable swimming conditions, so heed the posted flag warning. On the following pages we have provided listings, anchorage info and some of our favorite places to eat
and drink at each of the six most popular beaches in Phuket.
With a string of sandy beaches lining its west coast and several panoramic viewpoints, finding a good spot to watch the sunset in Phuket is easy.
Sunset-seekers are usually well rewarded at Sunset-seekers are usually well rewarded at Kata Beach, where the little round Koh Poo (Crab Island) sits offshore and adds an attractive visual focal point to the sea and sunset view. Nai Harn beach is also host to some divine sunset views, especially during the calmer sea months of November through April when several sailboats moor in the bay.
