Your View Welcome to the 2018 edition of the Phuket Marine Guide, the third one we have produced and the 14th edition overall. Last year we made numerous changes to liven up the layout and introduced more personality based material. The aim was to elevate the Guide from just purely informational, to a booklet that also educated, entertained and became a valuable resource for everyone involved in the Phuket marine industry. This year we are carrying on that successful theme with more interviews and updates. Our aim to make the Guide a truly Thailand wide device is epitomised by our section on the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show. We also specifically recognise in this edition the growth of the superyacht charter business. All of which points to a healthily growing marine industry on Phuket. We at Phuket Marine Guide are proud to be part of that process. Thank you for your patronage. We sincerely hope this 2018 is helpful to you as you go about enjoying what Phuket has to offer.

T HE PHU KET BR IE F

The Phuket Brief Phuket is much, much more than just its famous beaches and consistently warm temperatures. Yachties and mainstream tourists alike will find an eclectic range of places to go, things and people to see all within a short travelling distance surrounded always—always—by the magnificent, colourful Phuket landscape. Whether the wet season (July to October when the southwest monsoon dominates) or the dry season (November to May when temperatures drop to around a pleasant 25C) with average temperatures ranging from 25-34C (77-93F) all year round, Phuket offers numerous opportunities for fun, entertainment, relaxing and chilling out as well as stunning sailing conditions. For yachties any one of the four top class marinas offer every facility for mooring, maintenance and relaxation plus there is the opportunity to sail the traditionally calm and benign Andaman Sea into the hundreds of sheltered bays around Phuket’s 48km by 21km land mass plus the 32 small islands scattered nearby. Mudflats and mangroves abound and so do protected and calm bays for overnighting. Despite development of its coastline, Phuket is also still covered in dense native bush running up to a ridge of mountains. So if you are coming ashore to enjoy Phuket, here’s a few other ideas for the intrepid sailor to experience.

Kayaking in Phang Nga Bay; taking in a spectacular transgender cabaret, visiting beautiful Sino-Portuguese buildings in old Phuket Town, hitting the dozens of bars of Patong, marvelling at the stunning “wats” (temples), visiting the colourful local markets, taking a speed boat ride to numerous islands in the glistening Andaman Sea; taking the kids to the wacky but fun Phuket Fantasea Show, experience Muay Thai (Thai boxing), scuba dive and snorkel amongst vibrant coral reefs, dine at any one of hundreds of restaurants or, above all, just lie on the pristine, white sand of the more than 30 top beaches.

ZARA TREMLETT

PHUKET YACHT HAVEN MARINA

Phuket Yacht Haven Marina has undergone substantial change in recent years. As one customer at the coffee shop said: “WOW, good coffee, cake and croissant.” The yacht facilities are also impressive. A deep water access with 6m draft allows berthing of yachts to 100m. PYH can comfortably accommodate 320 vessels at present. Marine Manager Zara Tremlett has seen the marina grow for a number of years. Here she gives her take on a number of issues.

What is the capacity for super yachts now?

You take on the current state of the marine industry on Phuket?

54 yachts 30m+ (this will vary as a lot is alongside dockage).

Unpredictable! Very affected by world events and politics and, of course, local regulations. Other areas have moved ahead, e.g. Fiji, Tahiti; by opening up charter to foreign yachts and making formalities easier. In turn they have attracted a lot of the area market. However, the present government has been very supportive of our industry and hopefully the work being done on addressing the aforementioned will materialise into action.

What potential is there for a lot more super yacht charters in view of possible government regulation changes? If the anticipated changes come to fruition this will open up the doors for this side of the industry. The over flow to ALL business in Thailand is potentially huge: florists, food suppliers, hotels, restaurants, the airport (private and commercial flights), car hire, markets, and tourism in general +++ What trends have you noticed in the last year? Caution from visitors due to lack of stability in regulations. Also the “live aboard cruiser” is a growing high end market. They may join rallies and generally have a comfortable lifestyle rather than the traditional budget style. The average cruising yacht is now 16.7m (at PYH) as opposed to around 12m 5 years ago.

What areas are your customers coming from these days? E.g. Russian, European, Australian, Thai? Mixed; less Russians. UK is strong on the larger yachts (it is sometimes hard to know owner nationality due to flag state). What are the main issues you identify for the Phuket marine industry and PYH going forward? Regulations and their reliability BUT the government is being supportive

SCOTT BRADLEY

OWNER OF PRECISION SHIPWRIGHT SERVICES

Precision Shipwright Services Co. Ltd was 20 year’s old in September, 2017. Its owner Scott Bradley has been around boats all his life: sailing dinghies from four years old, building boats from six, he has owned sailing yachts and skippered motor yachts. He started his own yacht repair facility in Thailand in 1997 and became a qualified Shipwright in 1988. In 2006 he founded East Marine, the marine equipment distributor and chandlery located next door to the Precision facilities. Here Scott talks about his observations over the last 20years. Your observations on how the industry has changed since you first started? Yachts are getting bigger! When I started in working on yachts in Phuket the average yacht was around 45-50ft. Now the sizes have increased with many larger boats in the 70-90ft range What are the main positives and the negatives about doing business today? Finding skilled labour is difficult. Overheads have increased a much higher percentage than revenue. Benefits are there are more products and services in Phuket now than there was 20 years ago. Yachts are getting bigger so our company needs to grow with this trend which is sometimes difficult due to skilled labour requirements and keeping competitive pricing Your views on the status of the industry on Phuket? The marine industry is still growing in Phuket. Many maintenance companies are setting up with general services cleaning and detailing yachts. There are certified companies set up for training crew. Many Thai companies have now been established, including yacht repairers, electricians, engineers and yacht management companies. In general most reputable companies are still busy and doing very well even though there are far more companies than 20 years ago operating with similar services.

Business has changed considerably in recent years. Yachts are much larger, multihulls getting getting wider and there are more marinas. Your views of the future developments on Phuket? The yachting and the hospitality industry are related and are a big part of the future for Phuket. Many beautiful islands surround Phuket so I expect more yachts and larger super yachts coming in greater numbers in the future. Phuket is building new roads, tunnels, railway lines and more shopping malls. What difference has the Ao Po Grand Marina facility made to your business? For Precision actually we would prefer to base all our work in Boat Lagoon as our factory and office is there. Quality control and management is also improved running a business from one location. We are limiting parts of our business to areas where our equipment is with better supervision. With our yachting painting, fiberglass laminating, marine woodwork, welding yacht and architectural rigging all in one premises it makes more sense for customers to come to us where possible. We will continue operating limited services when needed in Ao Po Grand Marina and Rattachachai shipyard. We have a workshop in Krabi Boat Lagoon for antifouling, light maintenance and rigging services. The workshop is located next to the East Marine Chandlery.

MAINTENANCE AND MARINAS Phuket is one of the best places in Southeast Asia for repair and maintenance services. Services include mobile repairs and in-water repairs at any of the island’s marinas, and full haul-out and refit services at the Boat Lagoon Marina, Royal Phuket Marina or one of Phuket Town’s slipways. There are also small yards, mainly in Chalong and Rawai that service the growing numbers of custom new builds of sailing and power craft. There are four main marinas on the island; Ao Po Grand Marina; Phuket Boat Lagoon, Royal Phuket Marina and Yacht Haven Marina. You can take on fuel and water at any one of the marinas. You can also visit one of the fuel and water barges in Ao Chalong or in Patong. Yacht Haven Marina and Ao Po Grand Marina only, have depths large enough to accommodate superyachts, while Asia Marina and Ratanachai Slipway in Phuket Town can haul-out vessels up to 500 tonnes. For haul-out and refit work there are a number of facilities. Ratanachai Slipway in Phuket Town has the capacity to haul out vessels up to 52 metres and 209.50 tonnes using its railway type slipway. Ratanachai caters to a varied customer base – Naval vessels, fishing fleets and pleasure vessels. The yard is located up the river past the Seatran ferry terminal. Further up river, and the first shipyard you reach by road from Phuket Town, is Asia Marina. With a 100 tonne to 500 tonne travel lift, Asia Marina is an alternative for large vessels wanting to haul-out. A multihull-specific boatyard to the north of Chalong Bay, with concrete ramps and two trailers customised to haul out shallow-draft catamarans up to 16 metres in length and weighing 16 tonnes. There are workers available on-site, with storage space for around 50 boats on the outdoor hardstands, and there is a good chandlery five minutes from the yard.

CLEARANCE FORMALITIES

42

Immigration and customs formalities on Phuket are quite clear but beware that they are constantly changing. To assist you on arrival here are some key matters to consider and follow. Ao Chalong Pier (07˚ 49.08N, 98˚ 21.05’E) in Ao Chalong Bay on Phuket’s south east coast has a one-stop-shop check-in/out service housing immigration, customs and harbour master officials (Hours 0900-1200; 1300-1500). Purchase a pier bus shuttle for Baht10. Check in with all three departments. No harbour clearance can result in a Baht5000 fine. Even short trips outside Phuket must be cleared by the harbour master. AIS. Thailand has introduced the Automatic Identification System (AIS) or AIS Class B system or a higher class. It must be active entering and leaving Thai waters. AIS can be turned off in a marina or on the hardstand. Failure to have the mandatory AIS will result in a substantial fine. Check In. Check in at the information office on arrival. The on-line “check-in” for yachts was not recognised as of June, 2017 so play safe and visit all three relevant departments. Remember: take your passport, yacht registration (3 copies of everything) plus the original of the zarpe (port clearance document) from your previous port. The first time processing can be lengthy, but subsequent visits are easier.

Immigration. All crew and passengers must present photographs during clearance (in and out). Have three copies of papers and passports. Customs give boats a six month permit to remain before extensions are applied for (up to two years). Regular checks are made to comply with Thai law. Once checked in crew and passengers can travel anywhere on Phuket. Check in advance what nationalities are eligible for 30 day visas. The captain does not require a visa. He/she will be registered as being in transit and will be issued with a 30 day stay. Fees (subject to change). Immigration: normal hours Baht200 inward and outward; Sat/Sun and Holidays: Baht500 inward, Baht200 departure. Customs: Normal hours nothing inward, Baht300 outward; Sat/Sun and Holidays: Baht800 inward, Baht1000 outward. Harbour master: normal hours, nothing inward, Baht100 outward. Sat/Sun and Holidays, no extra charge. Have the correct money to avoid complications. Receipts must be given. Docking: Better to dock at a suitable anchorage rather than the unreliable pontoons at Ao Chalong. You can dinghy to the makeshift dinghy dock at the foot of the one-stop centre or dinghy into the beach. More changes are coming in the areas of leaving your boat in the country and going abroad, but these have not been finalised as of publication time. 43

CLEARANCE INFORMATION FOR NEIGHBOURING REGIONS MYANMAR

Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is one of the last untouched cruising grounds in the world. The Mergui Archipelago located 120 nm North of Phuket contains around 800 densely forested and mountainous islands that are surrounded by tropical reefs. Most of these islands are uninhabited and remain in their pristine and natural state. Wildlife is prolific both above and below the water, although dynamite fishing is beginning to spoil some reefs. The native inhabitants are nomadic sea gypsies who choose to live aboard their uniquely crafted wooden boats. Surviving out of the sea and on wild game from the islands, and preferring to keep to themselves, these people remain little changed by the modern world.

PERMITS

To enter Burma yachts must obtain a cruising permit before hand. These are issued by the government in Yangon (Rangoon) from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and take about 3 weeks to process. Alternatively permits can be obtained from yacht agents in Phuket (see Directory of Services at the back of this guide). Fees vary depending on the number of crew/passengers and the intended length of stay. It is compulsory to take a Burmese guide onboard while the vessel is in Burmese waters.

ANDAMAN ISLANDS

TheAndaman Islands are part of IndianTerritory. Forming part of theAndaman and Nicobar chain, they are situated in the Bay of Bengal 420 nm Northwest of Phuket. The Andaman and Nicobar chain consists of 572 islands, most of which are uninhabited, densely forested and fringed by stunning coral reefs At the time of writing the Nicobar Islands were out of bounds to all. The climate is tropical with medium to heavy rain during the monsoon season (May to October) and clear dry periods through the hot season (December to April). The population is hugely varied including Malay, Indian, Pygmy and Aboriginal, most of whom live in and around the capital city of Port Blair. The rest of the islands are speckled with small villages and stunning scenery. For more details on the Andaman Islands, visit: www.andaman.nic.in www.tourism.andaman.nic.in

MARINE ACTIVITIES

AROUND THE ANDAMAN SEA ON THE NEXT PAGE WE LIST THE NAMES AND CONTACT NUMBERS OF CHARTER COMPANIES ON PHUKET YOU CAN CONTACT. Here, we give a couple of good examples of what you can expect on a charter around the ANDAMAN SEA. Starting from Ao Po, Boat Lagoon, Yacht Haven or Royal Phuket Marina, all on Phuket’s east coast, you could head north to Phang Nga Bay via Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi to the east. Both are eco friendly islands where locals still enjoy a relatively unspoiled way of life. Up to the north in Phang Nga Bay float around its more than 120 strange looking “islands” soaring majestically skyward, explore the many hongs (caves), go snorkelling at Kai Island to hand feed the fish and then head off to Krabi . Krabi is one of Thailand’s classic southern provinces with its idyllic islands and tropical jungle. Call in at Krabi Town or Ao Nang for provisions and a day onshore. Then head south to Phi Phi Islands off Phuket’s south east where you have six islands to sail/motor around within a national park. Famous for “The Beach” movie, Phi Phi offers great sightseeing, beaches and

62

reefs for snorkelling and diving. Along the way encounter a myriad of small islands to explore. From Phi Phi you could head for Phuket’s west coast beaches via Promthep Cape at the foot of the island, anchoring at one of Asia’s top beaches, beautiful Nai Harn, then head up the coast stopping off at Kata, Karon, Patong, Kamala, Surin, Bang Thao, Nai Thon Beaches and finishing at Mai Khao in the north west. Just for fun head further south of Phuket to Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi, two epic charter destimnati0ons noted for their secluded bays, swimming, snorkelling or diving. There are private beaches and top resorts. After all this southern sailing, If adventure calls keep going north to the Similan Islands, off Phang Nga’s west coast. More than 80,000 rai of National Park, the Similans have been rated one of the 10 loveliest places on earth and one of the best scuba diving spots in the world.

63

BOAT CHARTERS With a vast archipelago and plenty of untouched beaches within an easy sail of Phuket, the island has been attracting increasing international interest as a marine holiday destination. All four of the island’s main marinas recently increased the number of berths they offer visiting yachts, and every year more vessels are made available for guests to charter, either on day trips or for longer excursions to outlying islands and reefs. The Andaman Sea around Phuket is becoming one of the world’s premier sailing destinations, the ‘Caribbean of the East’. Stunning marine areas such as Phang Nga Bay, which boasts over 100 islets, provide year round, sheltered cruising. Close to Phuket, the Racha Islands and Naka Islands are great day trip options with good

64

snorkeling and stunning beaches. Slightly further from Phuket, the famous Phi Phi Islands are a popular tropical hotspot, while Krabi’s limestone seascapes are stunning. Larger vessels tend to strike out for more distant archipelagoes, and Phuket is the perfect base for voyages to the Similan Islands, Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago or even India’s remote and therefore pristine, volcanic Andaman Islands. Those looking to charter a sailing or motor yacht from Phuket have a range of options available to them that covers everything from bareboat flotilla sailing to fully crewed superyacht cruises. These Luxury cruises are offered by many companies with departures from all marinas in Phuket.

You’re planning a cruising holiday in Phuket, or you’re already here and looking to charter a yacht for a day or longer... where to start? There are many professional yacht charter operators (see the advertisements in this guide) on Phuket offering a wide variety of sizes, sail and power for charteR. BELOW are a few tips and things to consider when planning your charter.

TYPE OF YACHT: Sail or Power? It really depends on what you are planning to do, where you are planning to go and for how long. Also, do you plan to charter bareboat or crewed? These are the basics you need to decide upon before you research any further. SIZE: It may not be everything, but it’s is important. If you are a family or group planning a multi-day charter, then you will need accommodation enough for you all. And if you are planing on lots of on-board sun-tanning, then lots of deck space is a must. WHERE TO GO?: A charter agent will be able to offer some advice on this, but do some research online into good sailing destinations in the waters around Phuket. It’s also important to know where you can take on fuel, water, provision if on an extended charter.

INSURANCE: Ensure there is comprehensive insurance for the yacht and all on-board And if you are chartering to enter one of Phuket’s regattas, ensure insurance is sufficient and covers this also. PROVISIONING: This is a service offered by many charter agents, but best to check and plan ahead. You don’t want to run short of your favourite bubbly while out on the seas.

CHARTER AGENT: The one you will choose will depend on many of the above and the service provided. There are a good selection of professional agents and many private individual charterers on the island.

Phuket is the hub for chartering yachts in Southeast Asia. There are many options to charter a sailing or motor yacht, from day trips to fully crewed superyacht cruising. Here are a few examples of destinations and cruising grounds you might want to add to your bucket list. Very popular with tourists, the one-day cruises are a perfect way to get a first experience in cruising the Andaman Sea. One-day cruises on a traditional Chinese junk such as June Bahtra, will take you to the amazing scenery of Phang Nga Bay in serenity and calm. Cruises usually include a stop at Ko Pannyi, a Sea Gypsy village perched on stilts, and a visit to James Bond island, the backdrop for the 007 movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun’. For a little romance, sunset cruises are an all-time favourite and most include a dinner on board. From dinner cruises on a traditional Thai junk such as Ayodhaya to Banyan Tree’s traditional long tail boats, you can see the beauty of sunset at sea; a truly memorable experience.

66

The first stop is at Monkey Bay (Ao Ling) on Phi Phi Don where, perhaps, you could enjoy snorkeling on the tropical reef of Hin Klang. Then onto Bamboo Island (Koh Mai Pai) which is known for its crystal clear waters, before heading to Phi Phi Don for lunch. Last but not least, you will spend the rest of the day at Maya Bay, location of the film ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. At sunset you cruise back to Phuket.Chartering a sailing yacht with a professional captain, crew and a cook is one more way to get a feel for cruising. These Luxury cruises are offered by many companies with departures from all marinas in Phuket. No sailing experience is required, just the desire to enjoy the peace and quiet of the ocean. The ‘Robinson Crusoe’ feeling in the evenings when the day-trippers are long gone, the stunning sunsets and the meals on board prepared by a dedicated cook, all add in to make this an unforgettable experience.

One example of an ideal 2 day itinerary would be as follows:

On the following page is a list of companies with their website addresses for you to surf and find the cruise you want, whether it’s based on destination or on the type of sailing or motor yacht you prefer.

On the first day, you will cruise to Phang Nga Bay with its startling limestone rock formations rising vertically out of the sea, enjoy a stop at James Bond island with an opportunity to kayak in ‘hongs’ (rooms) inside the limestone islands and through caves. On the second day, you will be on your way to the gems of the Andaman Sea, the Phi Phi islands.

For rather more advanced sailors, bareboat charter boats are available at all marinas in Phuket, as well as on yachts moored in protected bays around the island. All provide a yacht tender to get ashore and will arrange for provisioning based on your choice from an extensive list, unless you want to do your own given the vast array of shops, supermarkets and delicacy shops on the island.

FISHING CHARTERS PHUKET HAS SO MANY TREASURES THAT FISHING IS ONE THAT IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED. WITH ITS BLUE SKIES, CRYSTAL CLEAR SEAS AND CONTINENTAL DROP-OFF, PHUKET OFFERS ANGLERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CATCH A 300LB PLUS MARLIN OR ENJOY A SAILFISH BONANZA!

Home to an amazing diversity of game fish, Phuket is a delight for both novice and professional alike. On its day, Phuket is comparable with the best destinations in theworld. Home to Marlin, Sailfish, Mahi mahi, Wahoo, Barracuda and Tuna, to name but a few, the Andaman Sea is a fisherman’s playground. There are a number of operators offering day trips and extended liveaboard fishing excursions, all starting from Phuket. And for tackle, a number of well-equipped tackle shops can be found in Phuket Town and Chalong. FISHING SEASONS Different times of the year prove better than others for catching certain species of fish. For example, the tourist high season in Phuket (November - April) is a good time to fish for Sailfish, Giant Trevally, many of the Tuna family and King Mackeral. A popular spot for day-trips is the Racha Island group. As the South West Monsoon arrives, so do the Mahi mahi and Wahoo. However, the difference in the seasons is less distinct with other species, which can be caught throughout the year.

72

DAY FISHING HOT SPOTS There are a number of favoured fishing spots in Phuket, however, success depends on the time of year you go and the fishing techniques used. Below are a couple of the popular spots to go fishing within a day’s range from Phuket. RACHA ISLANDS The Racha Island group is located south of Phuket and consists of two idyllic islands surrounded by crystal clear waters. Racha Yai and Racha Noi are perfect for those wishing to explore the beach, and those wishing to fish. Racha Yai is located 16km south of Phuket with Racha Noi a few kilometres farther. The body of water between the two islands holds almost every kind of fish that can be found in the Pacific. CONTINENTAL DROP-OFF Situated south-west of Phuket, the continental dropoff can only be reached in a day by fast modern vessels. The drop-off has been formed as a result of plate tectonic shifts. At this point, the earth’s crust does not join at the same level, resulting in a huge drop-off where the waters reaches depths of hundreds of metres. These depths are home to Marlin. September to December is a good time for Black Marlin.

DIVING CHARTERS

SOME OF THE BEST DIVE SITES IN THE WORLD LIE OFF THE COAST OF PHUKET IN THE ANDAMAN SEA. DUE TO ITS MODERN INFRASTRUCTURE AND YEAR-ROUND SAFE ANCHORAGES, PHUKET IS THE OBVIOUS GATEWAY TO THE MARINE NATIONAL PARKS IN WESTERN THAILAND AND THE MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO IN BURMA. SIMILAN ISLANDS About 60 nm northwest of Phuket, these nine islands offer the clearest water, the whitest coralsand beaches, and the most colourful marine life in the Kingdom. The diving environment ranges from huge boulder outcroppings, to gently sloping coral reefs, to deep submerged pinnacles. To the north, near the Myanmar (Burma) border, lie Koh Bon, Koh Tachai, the famous Richelieu Rock, and the Surin Islands. Each is a unique environment, well worth the extra effort to visit. THE MERGUI ARCHIPELAGO Travelling north past Richelieu Rock, you will arrive at the Mergui Archipelago, historically part of Thailand (Siam), now governed by Myanmar. A remarkable group of over 800 islands, the archipelago has over 10,000 square-miles of calm seas and uninhabited islands, and the diving and water sport possibilities here are almost immeasurable. However, the dive sites and islands lie far from any major port, and supplies are not available, so a visit to this area requires more days at sea and forward planning.

74

ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS This area, 450 miles to the northwest, is much like it was 100 years ago with very little deforestation and almost no active fishing. Whilst the Andaman Islands are open for tourism, the Nicobar Islands are closed to all outsiders in order to protect the aboriginal peoples from outside harm or negative influence which could destroy their cultures. At least 10 days are necessary to visit these islands, not counting travel time. Several dive boats in Phuket publish schedules and many sailing yachts are available for charter. Diving around the southern parts of Phuket is also beautiful. Popular places such as Shark Point and the Phi Phi Islands offer incredible diving on most days. Day-trips are fun to these sites, while the other areas mentioned above generally require a multi-day liveaboard trip. However, Similan Island day-trips are gaining in popularity with recently introduced faster dive boats. It is impossible to see all that Thailand, Myanmar and the Andaman Islands have to offer in just one trip. People return repeatedly in order just to get a taste of it. Whether you have only a day or a few weeks, make time to dive the Andaman Sea, one of the world’s treasures.

TOP DAY SAIL D E S T I N AT I O N S FROM PHUKET THE RACHA ISLANDS

The Racha Islands are 10nm south of Phuket and a great day sail from Chalong Bay. There is protection in either season but it’s probably best to visit in the NE monsoon when more of the beaches are accessible. There are beautiful walks through the islands passing local villages, resorts and bungalows of all qualities. Life here is relaxed and the islands are still pristine. There are snorkelling and diving opportunities around both the islands. Racha Yai Bay is the preferred anchorage in the NE Monsoon. You approach it from the North West and it has plenty of depth and a wide entrance. There are plenty of moorings but they are often taken by the day boats. Anchor in 10 to 15m of water on the sandy bottom. Please watch out for the coral heads. There are several restaurants to choose from on the beach and a 5-star resort, The Racha, to visit.

THE RANG ISLANDS The Rang Islands consist of Yai and Noi and are 4nm from the Boat Lagoon Marina on the east coast of Phuket. They are a great destination in either monsoon and have a stunning long sandy beach. During the high season there is a day resort offering different activities and a Thai restaurant. There is also a pearl farm on the shore line. You can anchor on either the southwest side of Rang Yai or, for more protection in the SW monsoon, in between the islands. Beware of the coral drop off and ensure you anchor with enough room to swing well away from it. Anchor in 6 to 10m. THE KAI ISLANDS Koh Kai Nai and Nok are off the SW point of Koh Yao Yai and a great day trip out of the east coast marinas or Chalong. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to avoid the crowds. Nok is usually the busier through the day. There is great snorkelling and a real ‘desert island’ feel. There is a bar and a restaurant on both islands and deck chairs on Nok. Be very careful when anchoring as there is a lot of coral and a deep drop off. There are moorings but these are not advisable for larger vessels. If in doubt, anchor well off in 20+ metres of water. THE NAKA ISLANDS The Naka Islands consist of Naka Yai and Noi. The islands can be found a few miles off the east coast just north of the Boat Lagoon. They are a great stop over when cruising between the Boat Lagoon and the Yacht Haven Marinas. Both islands are inhabited by locals and Naka Yai has a resort on it. Both have restaurants and Naka Noi has a large offshore pearl farm as well as a daily pearl farm demonstration. To anchor off Naka Noi, keep an eye out for the pearl farm and anchor south of the jetty in 5 to 8m. At Naka Yai, find the long white sand beach south of the rocky outcrop on the east coast and keep an eye out for the coral drop off. Anchor in 8 to 10m. CORAL ISLAND (KOH HAE) Chalong is surrounded with islands that can be sailed around within a day and Coral Island is a good late lunch stop for day sails out of Chalong Bay. It can be busy with day trippers so it’s best to visit later in the afternoon. There are a few restaurants on the northern beach. The southern beach is much quieter but is only accessible at high tide. To anchor at the northern beach, find a spot in 8 to 10m on the sandy bottom. For the southern anchorage (not suitable in the SW monsoon) find the small bay and anchor in 15m on a rocky bottom.

TOP OVERNIGHT SAIL

DESTINAT IONS F RO M P H U K E T

PHI PHI ISLAND AND SURROUNDINGS One of the landmark destinations in Thailand, Phi Phi island is not only famous for being a casualty of the infamous tsunami back in 2004, but also because of the huge amount of effort the country put into rebuilding the island to match the expectations and desires of new visitors and adventurers. Take your pick of the southern (Tonsai Bay) side or the northern side (Loh Dalam Bay) of the island and make your way to shore for a bit of nightlife and lots of tourists attractions, including trekking trails, plus a wide variety of restaurants. This is a popular place to stop off for a trip to the Viking Cave, where gatherers will demonstrate how bird’s nests are harvested for the popular soup, and to Phi Phi Leh, made famous by Maya Bay, which was used in the movie “The Beach”.

PHANG NGA BAY Phang Nga bay is one of the most appealing locations when it comes to exploring the beauty surrounding Phuket island. Indeed, its towering limestone formations are well known around a the world and used as a background in movies such as The Man with the Golden Gun from the James Bond epic series. Koh Ping Gan (James Bond Island), as well as Koh Phanak are probably the first formations The area is also the home of the sea gypsies, who retired to Koh Panyi years ago and maintain a traditional lifestyle. The village on stilts hosts a mosque, plenty of restaurants and tourist attractions, but is a must see as it is one of the less visited heritage sites Thailand has to offer and might also be the only place in the bay where you’ll be able to buy supplies. KRABI Krabi province offers numerous stunning islands to be explored. Head to Rai Leh beach for some pictureperfect snorkeling (off Koh Yawasan) and water skiing options. It also offers a few bungalows for those who want to step off the boat for a night and some nice chilled out restaurants. The area also accommodates 5-star travellers in high-end resort hotels. A little further south, you’ll find Bamboo and Chicken island, which are two very famous destinations for snorkelers and divers and can also host you in a little restaurant, only open during daylight hours. If you decide to head north and find yourself in proximity of Koh Chong Lat, you could eventually be visited by not so wild sea/ mangrove otters who come out at dusk for a bit of fun and hunting! SIMILAN ISLANDS The Similan islands are by far the most popular diving destination off Phuket and this is more than evident as soon as you arrive. Dive boats aplenty drop tourist divers into the big blue on a daily basis, but the Similans are nevertheless an amazing destination, allowing you to sail between a group of nine islands that form a pristine national park. A 500 Baht fee is collected by a ranger (Ranger HQ on island no.8) when and if you wish to visit the island. This also the place to anchor safely, although the moorings get busy during the day. SURIN ISLANDS North West of Phuket and a little further past the Similans are the Surin islands, also a favourite among diving aficionados for its underwater rock formations, such as the stunning Richelieu’s Rock and the reefs of Koh Tachai. The islands are not as busy as the Similans because of their more distant location, but remain some of the most popular destinations for those who have a bit more time. Please note this is also a national park and local rules and customs apply whenever visiting the local sea gypsy villages.

KOH YAO NOI

Koh Yao Noi is a beautiful little island, so named after its shape, which means ‘little long island’. The place provides s a mix of upscale and budget accommodation options, as well as serving up an array of local delicacies. You can explore the local villages, where you’ll be able to buy local crafts. A floating jetty provides access to ferry passengers to Phuket so the island is also a popular day trip spot. There are several villages on the island and exploration is encouraged, provided visitors respect local customs and avoid bringing any alcoholic beverages ashore. Head to the northeastern side of the island and anchor in a protected bay with an access channel that you can dinghy sail for a candle lit dinner on the beach in front of the Koh Yao resort. Or head south to the next bay and enjoy the beauty of Villaguna, an exclusive village of luxurious villas that can accommodate you overnight and which offers incredible onsite facilities. Koh Yao Noi also has a modest clinic and a helicopter landing pad for emergency transfers back to the mainland airport or a Phuket hospital. You’ll also find ATMs, a post office and police station, although all seems to be very much the way it was 50 years ago.

Sunset at T-VILLA, Naiyang Beach in Phuket Island has the concept of Thai traditional atmosphere with native, grassy scenery surroundings and with fully-equipped facilities available. It will only take a few minutes to get to Naiyang Beach, Phuket International Airport and about half an hour to Phuket downtown and shopping centers. T-VILLA is accommodates for family travelers, honeymoon couples, or bunch of friends with its 75 rooms services.

T-VILLA IS LOCATED IN THE NORTH OF PHUKET ISLAND 1.9 KILIMETERS TO PHUKET INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AND 32 KILOMETERS TO THE CENTRE OF PHUKET CITY.

B. VAN ZUIDEN (ASIA) LTD. COMPANY PROFILE B. van Zuiden (Asia) Ltd (BVZ Asia), is one of the oldest, most trusted, reliable and respected textile agencies in Asia. Our company holds an extensive and strong distribution Asian network in Asia for Sunbrella fabrics and other specialty fabrics plus hardware and finishing materials for boat tops, covers, tarps, sales, seat cushions, interiors and more.

Today BVZ Asia has inventories in six major distribution centers: Hong Kong (head office), Guangzhou, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. We are an affiliate of the Industrial Fabrics Association International. BVZ Asia originally evolved from the Europe based B van Zuiden Company (est. 2001) an agent and distributor of high quality textiles and general commodities.

POPULAR PRODUCTS One of our popular products is Q-SNAP fasteners an invention stemming from the frustration of current fasteners being unable to meet tension and securing demands. Invented and manufactured in the Netherlands, Q-SNAP is now available in Asia through BVZ Asia. Says Kurt De Wilde, general manager, Thailand: “Q-SNAP is really the next generation of fasteners. Made of 316 stainless steel, the fasteners offer tight, easy and secure connection from any angle.” Another product, GORE TENARA threads, are virtually indestructible to the elements. Says Mr. De Wilde: “Our marine fabrics last between five to 10 years. GORE TENARA outperforms other outdoor threads in the market.” “If you aren’t already using our clear vinyls, Strataglass, Crystal Clear 20/20 or Ultraclear, you should. They are top of the line and will offer great value added,” said Mr. De Wilde.

He added some further advice for those not already using BVZ Asia: “Offer your clients 303 Clear Vinyl Protective Cleaner. It is a great two-in-one product that will not damage proprietary coatings.” With the BVZ Asia marine collection, you are guaranteed unparalleled performance. We have a “treasure trove” of technical data sheets and videos that will help you better understand the value of these products and how they can enhance the value of your boat. Mr. De Wilde issued an open invitation to anyone interested in acquiring top quality products from BVZ Asia to “come and see us at our Phuket office.” Website: www.bvz.com

Phuket Rendezvous, which replaces PIMEX after 14 years at Royal Phuket Marina, will run from 4-7 January, 2018. Its General Manager, Frenchman, Nico Monges, who facilitated the inaugural Thailand Yacht Show, leads the Heart Media team’s expansion into the ultra-high net worth market in Asia. Educated in international business development and marketing at the prestigious Euromed Marseille, Nicolas has worked extensively in sales and marketing for high end companies in property and yachting. Here he talks about Phuket Rendezvous. What prompted Phuket Rendezvous to take over PIMEX?

What areas will you be focusing on at PR to grow your market?

We have been working on this opportunity for several years. After participating in both Pimex and a competitive show and assessing the success of the Singapore Rendezvous it seemed to us the “Lifestyle Formula” works better for both exhibitors and visitors. The full immersion, the parties and the VIP lounge are part of the important “ Experience” we want to offer.

We are focusing on every channel—print, online, sub events, TV, Radio etc. It is very important for us as event organisers.

What opportunities did you see that attracted you? Personally I saw the opportunity as huge. Had had experience in luxury lifestyle events. The opportunity to develop this event with Heart Media and Lux, owned by Gael and Olivier Burlot, was a great chance for me. Those companies are leading companies in Asia media. Having a young and dynamic CEO is what we need for this business model to succeed. What is the potential you see in the Thailand market? We are already investigating other locations for events and are now expanding internationally with Penang and other international destinations. The Thai luxury market is very healthy. Phuket is at the epicentre for local, national and international wealth opportunities. Many Boats. Supercars, multi- million luxury villas and luxury products are sold every month. This is a good sign.

88

Are you focusing on the European buyers, Chinese or even Thai interests? For each event we are targeting 50% Thai national citizens and 50% international. We also have huge campaigns in China, Singapore and Hong Kong. What trends in the Phuket market are you identifying to warrant your investment in this region? As mentioned above. The number of arrivals, the average spends each year, the existing brands, the boats, cars and private aviation. What is your assessment of the future growth in Phuket? I think we are playing several roles. We focus on brands to generate more interest from buyers. By being part of the Thai Marine Business Association we are helping the local industry. We are now also integrating “Green” elements into our operations to limit our environmental impact

FASHIONS COME AND GO, BUT STYLE IS TIMELESS Building on the success of the Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX), the inaugural PHUKET RENDEZVOUS will be held at the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina from 4-7 January 2018 and will welcome an unprecedented number of exhibitors, sponsors, visitors and seminar speakers to the island. As well as showcasing over 50 premium yachts in the marina and over another dozen brands in the exhibition hall, the PHUKET RENDEZVOUS will also feature the world’s leading exotic car companies, watch makers, iconic fashion brands, luxury properties, gourmet cuisine and bespoke travel organisers as well as specialists within the art and investment sectors.

AO PO GRAND MARINA

THAILAND

YACHT SHOW Save the Date - 22-25 February, Ao Po Grand Marina, Phuket Phang Nga Bay, with its emerald green waters and stunning limestone islands, once again plays host to the third edition of the region’s premier experiential yachting event, the Thailand Yacht Show (TYS). Returning to Phuket’s Ao Po Grand Marina from 22-25 February 2018, the next TYS will be unlike any other boat show, with visitors being able to actually get out on the water and try out a whole range of watercraft. Held during the Lunar New Year, one of the busiest times on Phuket when it is buzzing with regional visitors, the Show will place an emphasis on the experience visitors will have and how it will enhance their ongoing yachting lifestyle. TYS also provides a unique opportunity for thrill seekers to enjoy the Show’s Demo Platform, where the more intrepid guests can come along to test the latest in yachting toys and accessories. Once again, exhibitors will have a platform to demonstrate their products at this dedicated area of the Show precinct and in so doing, make more meaningful connections with potential buyers. Andy Treadwell, CEO of 3L Events, organisers of the Thailand Yacht Show, explains, “One of the most important focuses of the third edition of TYS will again be on superyacht charter - and another being the ‘experiential’ style of the event. We want potential buyers and charterers to have an opportunity to climb aboard and trial some of the sailboats, sports-fishers, dinghies, tenders, watersport boats, day-cruisers and superyachts that our exhibitors will have on display.” Pre-qualified guests will also be invited to join some of the superyacht fleet on display for short “sea-trials” prior to the Show hours. For those who are new to yachting, it is a perfect opportunity to discover first-hand the benefits of yacht charter. It is unprecedented in a marine consumer show in Asia to offer exhibitors such a personal and targeted business development opportunity.

2018 With luxury marine tourism a key pillar of the Thai government’s 2021 Tourism Master Plan, TYS is its principal marketing platform. The plan requires prioritisation of this sector through concerted marketing efforts and the modernisation of charter regulations so as to be able to welcome - for the first time - international superyachts for charter. Treadwell has been in discussion with the various Thai government departments involved in the Superyacht Charter Licence project for the last three years, and believes that the issue is about to be resolved. Teams from TYS and the TMBA, the local marine industry association, are helping the tax department to finalise a modus operandi based on the successful New Zealand model, which enables foreign yachts to enter the country under a “temporary import” scheme - and spend millions of dollars directly into the local Thai economy. Running simultaneously, the Thailand Yachting Forum (TYF) is designed for industry professionals to network and meet face to face with government representatives. The conference will deliver a focused agenda to support the development of the local yachting industry and promoting Thailand as a premier superyachting destination. Those looking to relax can slow down and soak up the atmosphere. The HYPE Luxury Boat Club will be the hub of such, where DJ’s will be spinning the latest tropical beats, and bartenders will be keeping you cool with their yacht show exclusive cocktails. Then as the sun sets, we amp up the fun, with a variety of parties on yachts and ashore, making Ao Po Grand Marina in Phuket the place to be this coming February!
