Jerome Thomas Jerome’s in the house!

Hello and welcome to the Winter issue of Phushion Magazine. We honestly cannot believe how fast the last twelve months have gone! Whilst everyone prepares for what’s meant to be a very chilly Christmas, we’ve been looking around to bring you the best in new music, clothing brands and new models. Phushion is reaching its one year anniversary and the last quarter has just been manic. The last month has seen the launch of our latest addition to the Phushion brand – Phushion TV, our YouTube channel. So far we have showcased some fantastic bands and inspiring artists with many more in the pipeline. We have begun working with the fantastic music events of “Paul Dunton and Guests” which will become more prominent in the coming months. This has given us access to some truly amazing musicians in wonderfully intimate venues in Tunbridge Wells and Chelsea to date. Our main features in this issue are the stunning images of Steven Dengate from a very beautiful English country manor shoot, competition winners Marshal Manor Clothing with their striking street wear and Jerome Thomas. We have been following Jerome since his entry in to Surface Festival where he consistently brought his own unique brand of music to every show. Jerome as well as our other features really are ahead in their field and well worth taking note of! The team have been to some memorable gigs, our favourite being the UK debut and his first headline show, Chance the Rapper, at XOYO in London. What an amazing atmosphere, we hope all the features we have seen in the last twelve months get to realise their dreams and ambitions like he did that evening. In between dashing around crazed Christmas shoppers we have been looking ahead to our one year edition which now shaping up rather nicely indeed! So grab a glass of mulled wine (or whatever you fancy), pop on your most vibrant Christmas jumper and enjoy issue four of Phushion magazine, our biggest and greatest yet!

We hope you enjoy the fourth issue!

Phushion Out & About Chance The Rapper How would you feel if your first headline show was a sell-out? Well thats exactly how Chance The Rapper felt before his show at XOYO, in London. He couldn’t have dreamed of the reception he recieved when he shuffled onto stage. You can’t imagine the joy on his face when he saw everyone shouting his name and jumping up and down. His admiration and love for the crowd was shown, when after a couple of songs he stopped to thank the crowd for being there. He performed one song from his first mixtape, ‘10 Day’ while the rest of his set was made up of the brilliant ‘Acid Rap’. Throughout he wowed the audience with his energetic performance, his great dance moves and an all round great show. Just when you thought it was over, Chance the rapper came back on stage with none other than Mr Hudson who played out the show with him for an epic finale.

The Grey Lady - Venue Over the month of November we went to several gigs at the Grey Lady music lounge which organised and held by Paul Dunton. His shows have a chilled out ambience with candles on each table and the chance to have some food while listening to local music. With nearly 400 acts associated with the night there is a wealth of variety each month. We are thrilled to be filming some of the acts that perform at his shows and showcasing them on our brand spanking new YouTube channel. This means we can share with you video content from a wide range of talented musicians and acts. In the new year we will release a schedule for when the content will be available. As always with Phushion being out and about, watch this space...

Allanah Photo Model: Ben Nugent

My name is Allanah Kyle, I am a young photographer from Scotland but currently based in Lincolnshire. I have always had a passion for art and was inspired at a young age by the intense vividness that a lot of the nineties pop culture was about. Since a toddler I was never parted from my drawing books and held a strong interest in beauty and fashion. I remember around the age of 8-12 spending hours flicking through teen beauty magazines, drawing and painting from inspiration and a great want to create the things that had been harboured in my mind. It was when I was about 13/14 I started to take more of a real interest towards photography, especially in the fashion and beauty industry. The idea of processing my imagination into photos, and new found skills in early versions of Photoshop was the start of everything! I was very lucky to have my first shoot collaboration with a great agency model, before that I spent two years honing my skills in creative self-portraits, as well as vivid landscapes and macros. When I started working with other creatives, not only as a photographer but as a model, I was hooked! Unfortunately for me shooting regularly would not be possible. It was only this year that I began to shoot more frequently again.

The last few months have been a great life change for me. I have had the fantastic opportunity to collaborate with eager industry professionals as well a new talent. My inspirations are growing every day, and it’s kind of like being 7 again. I think it’s a fun to challenge myself to create something new and unique, even if I find myself being inspired by thousands if not millions of things through out my day. Anything from geographic locations and the country around me to birds, animals and everyday beauty in life. Currently I feel my body of work is still developing and getting better with every shoot. As much as I love to shoot polished beauty and fashion styled work, I do also enjoy the stripped back sense of fine art and the more stark side of fashion photography. I have been working on adding diversity to my portfolio whilst trying to retain a certain unique style. Having no formal training in photography and being mostly self taught, I have been lucky to get into contact with kind photographers who I’ve either worked with as a model, or were just generally helpful when I needed advice. Alia Thomas

I’ve always been quite a creative person, having keen interests in art and music, and playing various instruments from a young age. I always enjoyed these subjects at school, and my general interest in photography started off when I received my first Canon compact camera at the beginning of my time at secondary school. I would take it everywhere capturing pictures of my family, friends, and my world around me. I took art at GCSE which enabled me to use photography in a more focused way, helping my work in ways such as for research and references to draw from. However, it was at college where my passion for photography really sparked from. My interest and passion for photography lead me to study an Art-Media Foundation diploma at university, followed by a degree in Commercial Photography which I am about to start my final year of. I’ve learnt a great amount already, but there’s always more to learn and this is what excites me. I love learning new techniques and styles, about others work, and I’m always looking to see how I could improve my own. It was at university where I focused more on what I really enjoy, which is portraiture and fashion photography. Photographing people is what I love to do. I especially enjoy working in a studio environment as it allows me to have full control over each aspect of the shoot.

Model: Agata Bartoszek. Make up/Hair by Madeline Saffron I’ve been lucky enough to meet, talk to and work with some great and very interesting photographers. Last year I went to a day of Vogue Festival up in London where I heard talks from the likes of Tim Walker and David Bailey. Hearing such highly regarded photographers like these two talk about their work was incredibly helpful and inspiring to a young and aspiring photographer like myself. Steven Dungate My name is Steve Dungate. I live near Tunbridge Wells, Kent. I wish I could tell you that I developed a natural enthusiasm for Photography during my school day’s. I had barely looked through the lens of a camera until the age of 25 and this would only have been to take odd bad holiday snap. Then suddenly (pun alert) everything clicked into place and before long a hobby became an obsession and every direction I turned appeared to present new and exciting photographic opportunities. Over the past 8 years my photography has taken me on a journey through various stages. It all started with Aviation photography, hours spent outside military bases staring at the skies. Then came the arrival of a very playful and beautiful puppy, and with her, endless beautiful and diverse moments captured. In 2011 our first child was born and once again our lives were turned upside down (in a good way) but he gave me a fresh new challenge and inspiration in a abundance. It was immediately obvious to me that he would change and grow by the second, this little life needed to be documented and never had my camera been more important.

At the present, wedding photography consumes the majority of my time, and long may this continue. At each wedding I attend I feel privileged that the bride and groom have invited me into some of the most intimate moments of their special day and trusted me to record these creatively and truthfully. This all began 3 years ago following my own wedding. We chose our wedding photographer at a wedding fare, we loved his images but primarily we picked him because we felt comfortable and at ease in his company, we could be ourselves in front of him, we could therefore be ourselves in front of his lens on the big day. This made for beautiful and honest wedding images. When we returned from honeymoon, he allowed me to shadow him, at first this was terrifying, so much to learn, so much responsibility, so unfamiliar to anything I shot before. But the more I learnt, the more I wanted to learn. I began second shooting for other photographers, and so began 2 years of being a human sponge, eager to soak up anything and everything those already in established in the profession were willing to teach me. I am now shooting weddings as the Primary photographer, and the best thing about reaching this place is that I know longer just turn up on the day. I now get to build a relationship with the bride and groom, find out what they want from their special day, what feeling they want from their images and what they want from me. It also gives me a massive confidence boost on the day to know that I am there, not because I responded to a post on a social networking site for a second shooter, but because the bride and groom have seen my portfolio, met me, and chosen me for the job. Wedding photography is a passion. I love the stunning venues it gives me access to, the interesting people I meet along the way, the different challenges it presents and it’s unpredictability that dares me to think outside the box.

As well as wedding photography, Steve enjoys portraiture and fashion work. He loves to work in black and white and this is represented by this set of images with the wonderful model, Ellie Skinner. The shoot took place at Knowlton Court where Steve has previously shot a wedding in August of this year, because of the style of the location Steve went for a vintage/timeless look. To go with this look he acquired some vintage clothing from Paula Fry at Love Is Boutique, which fitted the shoot impeccably. He really pulls of the vintage look, with Ellie looking like a young lady of the manor in front of her huge country house, the outfit is that of a high class lady which adds to the effect and makes you ask questions such as who is she?

Ellelouise

I have known that I love taking photographs since the age of 14. I spent my teenage years experimenting with self-portraits and places and objects I found interesting. I started to find my feet in 2012, until the last few months of the year I had started to lose inspiration and stopped picking up the camera so much. After a heavy break-up and a revelation of life, I took it upon myself to start a 365 project. The challenge was to take a photo every day for one year, to give myself a kick up the back-side with my photography, and hopefully improve my technique along the way. I got stuck in to the project on 1st January 2013, but after just 6 days I had grown stressed and uninspired from forcing myself to take a photo of something every day. I kept at it until day 14, when I decided to downsize the project to a weekly one; I’d rather have a quality body of work at the end of the year, albeit less images, than numerous half hearted ones. After a one-day gap I was suddenly full of inspiration due to the pressure relief, and the project was well underway again, this time a photo every week for a year. With a variety of portraits, self-portraits, daily life, abstract and experimental images, I have really surprised myself with what I have achieved thus far. To witness my own skill and understanding develop is something I’m very proud of and grateful for. My favorite thing about

16

the project is that I’ve started dabbling in film photography, and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with it! To sum it up in one word is not possible. At times it’s been challenging, but it’s also been very smooth; it’s been fun, yet tedious; time consuming, yet so natural. Overall this project has been a powerful learning experience, one with visible improvement, both in photography and as a person. I am now carving a path for myself in to the industry and want for nothing other than to make this my profession. I am now in week 43 of 52 and am due to finish in the final week of 2013. I will be happy when it is complete, not because I’m tired of it, but because it will be time for the next step of progression. I plan to leave self-portraiture and work with more models and fashion, aiming towards my first editorial in a magazine. I would love for you to follow me in the final weeks of my project and further along the rest of my journey as a photographer. http://www.facebook.com/ellelouisephoto

Farrow We are Farrow, a 5 piece pop/indie/experimental band from Tunbridge Wells, formed in late 2012. We emerged onto the Brighton scene in mid-2013 with catchy, dream-like pop songs, with underlying dark influences. The line up consists of Nick Blyth on Lead vocals, George Dewhurst on lead guitar and backing vocals, Chris Cheater on rhythm guitar, Ally Mackay on bass and Tom Dewhurst on drums and pads. We formed after getting an itching feeling that our old bands were no longer interesting us musically, so we decided to create a band from the ashes of each respective project, and make a group we could all relate to in terms of music and influence. It is a joy to write together and our process of writing is a very natural one. We find that a catchy riff or guitar lick can often stem from a lyric, piece of writing or film we’ve heard/seen somewhere, which is interesting because before we would write songs that had no real meaning and story behind them. We now make a conscious effort to write music that will have an effect on both us as a band and hopefully the people listening. People often ask us where are name has come from‌ So here it is!

20

Farrow is in homage to the golden era Hollywood actress Mia Farrow. We are big fans of the film Rosemary’s Baby. She exudes a strange beauty, so she was our number one pick (she’s also a babe). Films have really influenced a lot of the songs we have performed live, we feel that telling a story through music and words is a great way to paint a picture in someone’s mind that they can completely create themselves. I guess that’s the beauty of music. People should definitely check us out because we write good pop music, with a true meaning to it. It has a lot of depth to it, which is important, but our music is always fun, sometimes sad, angry and happy all at the same time. There is a song for every way you are feeling, which is why we are grateful to be playing, doing shows and hopefully recording some studio recorded songs soon. Jerome Thomas

One of the UK’s most exciting talents Jerome Thomas is a part of a new generation of artists making it on their own terms. Jerome is a rare character with the ability to cross musical genres and create his own authentic sounds along with his startlingly smooth vocals. Not only a talented singer/songwriter, expect the fashion set to take note of his individual quirky style and his lifestyle brand FOE (Fusion Of Everything/Freedom Of Expression). I’ve loved music all my life, I couldn’t really say when I started because its always been apart of my life at one point or another, I suppose it got more serious to me around the MySpace age when so 2005/06. This past year I’ve been locked away in the studio, just creating new content with my producer Chr1s Love. We have a new project coming January 1st called ‘Free. Music.’ Free Music has everything from Soul to D’n’B from 2011 when I released ‘Return Train Home’. I’ve grown mentally and musically and I have been exploring different types of music. This EP is designed to show growth, change and fusion. This is mine and Chr1s’ 1st release, but we have a lot more material in the locker. Free Music is just the tip of the iceberg, the prologue. As well as my own work I have a couple of features that are available on iTunes. The first feature is on the track ‘To have and have not’ which is on Jubei’s (from Metalheadz) debut album. The other is a single with Drop Lamond called ‘Breaking the walls’ which is taken from the EP of the same title. Other than being in the studio, I’ve been working on getting my clothing brand, named FOE, off the ground. Which you can find on Asos www.asos.marketplace.com/seller/foe You can expect to see a lot from Jerome in 2014, there will be new music including a new EP called ‘Quiet Before The Storm’ and a lot more from FOE. We can espect more collaborations and material to show the world what he is really about. Having had Jerome on our radar for quite some time, we have seen him progress and diversify and are very much excited to see what the future holds. Link London

Link London is all about expressing an Underground movement. We are a team of 5 individuals who run House Music events in London & Kent. We specialise in a unique style of house music - it is a blend of Deep Bassy beats and melodies with an infusion of Techy 80’s Synth sounds. Each member of our team has Love for the music, which is why it works so well. Each of our DJ line up’s are carefully thought out and we hand pick the DJ’s to cater to our growing fan base. We started Link London back in May 2013, it started when Kent based promotion team formerly “Anxiety Events” were introduced by a mutual friend to South London based promotion “House Play”. We made the tactical move to join forces as it just made sense. The concept of this transition was that we would be Linking together and as a result we would be Linking our two different fan bases together from different areas, which we thought was a brilliant idea. Link London is very much a party for the people. We love the fact that we can create such an amazing atmosphere for the fans. We are all about good vibes, friendly people who love the music & jaw dropping venues to case it all. There really is nothing like the feeling you get when you see you have put such a big smile on someone’s face & that’s what we aim to do through our parties.

ing, not to mention he had some huge releases coming out on various record labels that we were really feeling. Cera Alba was choice number 2, The up and coming artist recently having tracks signed to Hot Creations which is one of our favourite record labels and a very well-known label at that. Again we had seen videos and heard stories of how well Cera Alba played live, with his unique sound that has played all over the country. The third choice Vanilla Ace came as part of our promise to support up and coming talent of all levels, he had recently had an EP signed by Toolroom Records, which again for those who follow the house music scene will know is a prestigious label owned by Mark Knight. We really enjoyed the sounds that Vanilla Ace was producing and thought it would be a great shout to include him in the line-up. This party was a packed out night and we thoroughly enjoyed it (Please see the facebook timeline & fan page: Link London for videos).

Previous events: Sat 4th May 2013, Cera Alba (Hot Creations), Jobe (Resonance Records), Vanilla Ace (Toolroom records) + Link London Residents at Lightbox, Vauxhall, London. This was our first big party as part of the team, we held a meeting and we spoke about who we wanted to headline the event – Jobe was the first DJ we booked, this came about because a few of us had seen JOBE play at another London party the year before and he was amaz- Sat 17th August 2013, COZZY D (Lower East Records/

30

Creche), Optionone Soundsystem (Brick Lane), Rooted, + Residents – Liam Oley (Link London/Arch 44), Alfie Loverage (Link London), Tommy Mack (Link London/Dog records) & Danny Cee. This was another fine example of us not only booking major headline acts, but also supporting the best of the emerging artists. We have had the most amazing feedback from many of our fans leaving comments on the facebook page like “The music was unbelievably good, thanks for the great night” & “Best night out in ages”, it’s the support like this that makes it all worthwhile doing what we do. The line-up choice here was based on a love for Cozzy D’s music, with his stunning track Aphrodite being one of our biggest influences and a fine example of the music we want to share with our fans. Optionone Soundsystem the guys from Brick Lane in Shoreditch are very much still up and coming but are making movements in the East London scene, so we thought why not invite them down to South London to showcase their stuff and they went down a storm which was very pleasing. Rooted are friends of Link London and have featured at previous parties so we were happy to have them back as always playing some stylish music and once again proving how well they can get the crowd going. It has to be said that the Link London Residents DJ’s really are a force to be reckoned with. They have been on top form this year causing a stir in London playing at not only our events but other well-known London parties! With all of them not only DJ’ing but producing their own music to a very high standard and many of them getting their tracks released later on this year on well-known record labels (Good luck to them)!

What’s new for us – Link London are very proud to announce that for the last party of the year we have gone to great lengths to create what is in our opinion a masterpiece of a party. The details for our last party of the year (December) will be released very soon. Please add us on our social network sites to keep up to date with where we are heading – Facebook Timeline & Fanpage: Link London/ Twitter: @Linklondonclub/ Resident Advisor: Link London. Thanks from all the Link London team for your time... we hope you’ll join us soon!

Jay Prince

32

One of the most listened to mixtapes at Phushion right now is Jay Prince’s “Mellow Vation”. The rapper, producer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist has a distinctive sound which clashes both UK and US hip hop. His lyrics are catchy and thoughtful and his beats are contagious. We caught up with him to discuss his career and plans for the future… I go by the stage name of Jay Prince and I’m 20. I’d describe myself as a UK Hip Hop artist, beginning my career roughly around the age of 15 which is when I decided to take music seriously and make a career out of it. At the age of 17 I released my first mixtape which entitled “Hello World” most of the songs on this tape consisted of remixes and covers such as Mac Miller’s “Kool Aid & Frozen Pizza”, Wiz Khalifa’s “Roll Up”. I received a great response considering it was my first time thinking of myself serious as a musician and putting myself out there. After that the next project I released was called “Lounge in Paris”. The inspiration behind this tape was life experiences and culture. Most of the music was written whilst I was in Paris and is full of soulful music with a mellow neo soul vibe. At the age of 19 time I went on to create more videos for my tracks, my fan base began to grow and I decided to collaborate with the Swiss producer Maloon The Boom on a EP named “Voyage”. The single for this EP was called “Trashy” which had a buzz in London and gathered more of a Swiss fan base. The “Voyage” EP consisted of 6 tracks and 2 bonus instrumentals. More recently I’ve been working on my new solo mixtape titled “Mellow Vation” which was released November 18th 2013. I worked with UK producers on this tape and produced a lot of my own music too. I have 2 singles released already from this on my Soundcloud & Youtube - ‘All From Here’ the music video for which was filmed in Toronto Canada, &”Feel Good”. Recently have been performing a lot in London and performed in Paris at Biblioteque with French producers Sinesquare, In the UK I’ve performed at Indigo2 back in January at XOYO on the 7th October. To hear more from Jay Prince (which we strongly suggest) you can find his music here… https://soundcloud.com/jayprincemusic/all-from-here-prod-tom-misch http://jayprince.bandcamp.com/ http://www.youtube.com/Jayprinceuk https://www.facebook.com/JayPrinceUK

Inherit The Stars

‘Their debut album is a jewel in their crown that could see them on their way to global domination’ - Metal Mouth 9.5/10 ‘The potential to be my favourite discovery of 2013 already’ Loud Stuff

Breaking out onto the music scene in late 2012 with a style that’s completely their own, Sheffield born and bred quintet Inherit The Stars are an explosion of sound that should not be missed. With all five members already being well-aquainted with the stage, their live shows ooze energy, creating an impressive gigging experience. Listing some of their major influences as bands such as Fightstar, Funeral For A Friend, Enter Shikari and Chiodos, Inherit The Stars are most recognisable for their powerful rock riffs, lulling string arrangements, adrenaline-filled synth lines and anthemic choruses. Boasting a debut album produced/mixed by Jim Pinder at Treehouse Studio (Fightstar, Rise To Remain, While She Sleeps), ‘We Were Made To Walk The Skies’ was digitally released in May 2013 and earned positive attention from rock/metal critics for their genre pushing sound which takes elements of post-hardcore and alternative rock gelled with metalcore and a dose of punk pop. Equally championed by alternative rock and metal press and radio around the world, Inherit The Stars released three video singles as part of their apocalyliptic themed Orbis Trilogy. In the space of 7 months, Inherit The Stars’ fast rising popularity has taken them from the smallest of venues to headling Sheffield’s 02 Academy for the launch of their latest single ‘Ground Zero’

34

Intent on making their mark on music history, impressive and innovative things can be expected from this young band, who dare to deliver music with a message. With plans for further releases and to bring their explosive sound to venues across the UK, Inherit The Stars have sheer ambition, commitment and creativity to climb the to further heights of recognition. Inherit The Stars are Daniel Jeffery (Vox), Theo Egginton (Guitar/Vox), Chris Brayshaw (Guitar), Lewis Wild (Bass) and Jordan Rabjohn (Drums) Check out The Orbis Triology of video singles Ground Zero http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwaOaEQnRdo and Free download at www.soundcloud.com/inheritthestars/ground-zero Caught In The Crossfire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw-ocRqBygY Citizens Of Earth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PSu0LbNdLM

Marshal Manor Clothing During September we ran a competition aimed at independant clothing brands, to give them an oppurtunity to showcase their lines. Marshall Manor claimed first place and with that became our main fashion feature in this issue. Freshly Established in early 2013, Marshal Manor started as a vision to provide high quality clothing that is contemporary, innovative and most important of all, bold. Heavily influenced by urban culture, they focus on creating timeless street-wear with a classic edge.

38

39

Since Marshal Manor’s formation this year, their main mission has been to develop an effortless but slick approach to street-wear, combining original designs with the brand’s own heritage. At the heart of the brand, they have the Marshal Manor staple, the Classic Logo tee. As Homage to Mr Marshal himself this essential is a unique take on the popular white tee, whilst maintaining the Marshal manner and style. They produce in limited numbers as they have put quality and attention to detail at the forefront of the brand’s values. The brand make clothing for people who live life to the fullest, with no restraints. That’s the Marshal Manor way. While still growing as a brand, they are eager and hungry to progress; taking street-wear to whole new level.

Louise Davis Hi I’m Louise Davis, a 19 year old Biomedical Science student at Keele University and I model part time at weekends and over University holidays. I have been modelling for approximately 6 months ever since I was asked to do some work for a small independent clothing company my that was starting up. From there I realised how much fun it was and that it was something I really wanted to pursue so Katy Leanne Tierney who owns a studio in Bridgtown, Cannock, helped me to start a portfolio. I have spent some time trying to develop my own edgy style, combining both the alternative and classic looks.

Katy’s work is some of my favourite and since then I have worked with many other photographers including Jann Wassell, Michael Szabo, David Wilkes and Simon Scott. My favourite shoots have been the themed shoots, a boxing themed one with Jann Wassell and a Lara Croft/Tomb Raider themed shoot with Simon Scott.”

Scarlett Ward Scarlett has been modelling since the young age of 15 when she did some catalogue modelling, but she stopped doing this to concentrate on her A’ Levels. She is currently studying English and History at Keele University and juggles her time with presenting on the University Radio station. Just a few years later, one of Scarlett’s university friends started a tattoo blog, for which she did some modelling. This Russian themed shoot was created exclusively for Phushion to tie up our Winter issue. Scarletts on trend candy floss pink hair, slightly alternative style (and fantastic woolly hat) make this image fun and daring. There’s nothing like a white Russian winter! This particular shoot is also regarded as one of her favourite shoots she has done. She loved the big white eyelashes and the whole idea behind it.

We hope Scarlett enjoyed the shoot and doesn’t get too chilly this season! If you would like to see more of her work then you can visit; https://www.facebook.com/scarlett. ward.52
