Intro Welcome to issue 36 of Vision Magazine. This month we take a look at birth, death and marriage. In between these articles we feature a new alternative to dieting, Keto eating. We find some good excuses to ease your conscience about drinking Gin. With the increasing popularity of Gin Bars, I thought we should look at Gin’s appeal. Lastly, I would just like to thank the AA for coming to my rescue. I got stuck on the Airbles road, the very day the roundabout to Wishaw was closed off. I pulled into a side street to change the tyre and found no spare in the boot only one of those puncture foam kits. Even though it was pouring and cold the people in the street where I parked came out to help.. We forget how lucky we are living in Scotland, when total strangers come out to lend a hand. Thank you.

IS gin healthy? With Gin’s popularity on the increase, we thought we would find some good excuses to indulge in the latest trend. No matter how sick you get, your doctor probably won’t prescribe a glass of gin. But that wasn’t always the case. During the Renaissance, the juniperflavoured spirit was thought to “cure” everything from gout to the Black Death. (It didn’t, but guzzling gin beat fighting the plague sober.) During the late 17th century, British gin stopped being an ineffective medicine and became a cheap way to get blotto. Nicknamed “mother’s ruin,” gin was responsible for putting a good portion of the population of London in a permanent stupor. After a few decades of this decay, gin’s reputation became like heroin’s today. Strangely, after centuries of dubious medical claims, gin restored its honour thanks to its therapeutic value. As the British Empire expanded into tropical areas, malaria became an epidemic. Quinine, derived from the bark of the cinchona tree, combated the disease, but it had a critical weakness: Its overwhelming bitterness made it tough to stomach. Luckily, chemists perfected a carbonated tonic that made the quinine more palatable. Colonists soon realized that a slug of gin could liven up this concoction, and gin and tonic became everyone’s favorite medical cocktail. As these travellers returned home, they brought their new drink with them, and Londoners once again embraced
Visioniss36.indd 6
gin as something other than the tool of the devil. You could hardly blame them. Herbal, clean, and refreshing, gin is the perfect pour for a summer night. So for your health’s sake, why not toss back a gin and tonic? Is there some truth to the idea of gin having particular benefits? From the slightly more obvious (a relatively low calorie count) to the truly amazing (stay calm, but there’s a very real possibility that gin makes you look younger), there are a number of reasons why indulging in the spirit could be good for many different aspects of your health. So, remember to consume in moderation, and like any expertly-made martini, take all of these points with a little pinch of salt...
It’s low in calories
Gin is one of the least calorific spirits you can choose, with a mere 97 calories per shot. Add it to a low calorie mixer - diet lemonade or tonic water are that’s gin, tick, but sugary fizzy drinks our personal recommendations - and no, got it? you’re still hitting a far lower total than you would with the average glass of It keeps wrinkles at bay wine (160 calories) or pint of beer (208 The core ingredient in gin is juniper calories). berries, which are jam-packed full of antioxidants. Juniper berries also act as a natural diuretic, and - double whammy - the herbs used to make gin are known for their role in aiding digestion. So if you find that alcohol often bloats you, switching to gin will give you a much flatter stomach than your usual beverage.
In addition to its host of other benefits, juniper was actually an old-world remedy for the pain of conditions like arthritis and rheumatism. Of course, a daily Bombay Sapphire isn’t a substitute for proper medication, but there are those who insist that gin-soaked raisins can reduce inflammation, and who are we to argue?
It calms joint pain
It helps you live longer
It eases bloating

One study found that ‘moderate consumption of alcoholic drinks seems to reduce the risks of developing cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cataracts’, and it’s said that the ingredients in gin (yes, juniper again) can help strengthen the connective tissue in your veins, and contain flavonoids, which help to prevent clogged arteries.

TIPS TO PLAN the perfect wedding
B
etween the life-changing proposal and the tear-jerking “I do’s,” there’s the unique stress known as wedding planning.
Even if your big day is a year or more away, many things might still trip you up. Don’t let the planning take away the enjoyment of the big day. It’s all part of the process so you should always remember to enjoy the journey. Do as little or as much as you want. Remember it’s only a day in what should be a lifetime of memories.
You’re Going to Offend, Disagree with, and Feel Guilty About at Least Someone During This Time
Having a wedding is like throwing a big party (which is normally stressful), except the party is really a huge fancy ball that everyone has expectations and opinions about. Some people will inevitably want to be in the spotlight or take over the planning. You might discover your fiancé/fiancée has absurd taste in napkin colors and is willing to fight you to the death about it—or worse, he/she doesn’t care about the napkin color. You might feel evil as you cut people from your guest list or make your wedding party spend more money on formal clothing.
2
Splurge on the Most Important Things
Your wedding is a momentous, wonderful occasion, and for that reason, we tend go overboard making sure every little thing is going to be perfect and everyone is happy. That awesome day will really be just a blip in your many years of life as a married couple and the things you (and your wedding guests) will remember most just months after the event will probably not be the things you worried about most. Whatever your budget is concentrate on the things you’ll remember most The venue is one of the most important decisions It must be affordable enough to accommodate all of your closest friends and family members. If yo can get a wedding planner with the deal, great. The experience with our loved ones is, after all, the main thing
3
Take It Easy with the Wedding Gift List
It’s so easy to get carried away with your gift list. After all, you’re trying to make it easier for your guests by suggesting a variety gifts in a wide price range—and it’s the most effortless shopping you’ll ever do, no pain of paying.

Be careful what you wish for. I have no idea why I put a food steamer on my list (other than my weakness for kitchen gadgets), but now that and other impractical (though much appreciated!) Wedding gifts are just cluttering my house.

Plan for the Worst
No matter how much you plan, something will deviate from the plan on that day. Plan for it. You’re saying your vows outdoors? Make sure there’s a place indoors (or storm equipment) just in case. Going to eat foods you’ve never had before? Make sure someone close to you is carrying allergy medicine. Whether it’s the weather, the large gathering of incompatible people, or just Murphy’s Law, prepare for something going wrong. Have a backup of everything possible. Bring another copy of your vows, a makeup bag (or other toiletries), and so on. You know that scene in Four Weddings and a Funeral where the best man forgot the rings? What the heck, carry some toy plastic rings if it makes you feel better.
5
Don’t Break Your Ankle the Day Before Your Wedding
Don’t do unusual, potentially dangerous activities like Ski jumping or skydiving right before your wedding. Seriously, take care of yourself and try not to stress. Your wedding day is going to be amazing, no matter how much or little you planned even if you’re covered in hives and you’re limping on one foot.
6
Delegate, Delegate, Delegate
Most people don’t like asking for help, but if there’s one time you could use more help, it’s during the wedding planning. People will offer and you must learn the art of delegating and relinquishing control. Find the small things on your checklists you can trust others with, and let them do it if they want to help you. Even if it seems your spouse-to-be is nonchalant about the whole affair and doesn’t want to pitch in, still try to get him/her to pitch in. (It’s good practice for the later years.)
7
Wedding Planning With Divorced Parents
Seating Both of your parents will want to sit in places of honor at your wedding reception, but neither should sit at the bridal table. Rather, each parent should host his or her own table. Make sure that any divorced parents are not sitting at tables too close to one another. Giving them space will allow them to feel relaxed and enjoy themselves. Photography Be sensitive where photography is concerned. Talk to your photographer in advance about the situation, and let him/her know which family shots, as well as candid shots, you would like taken. While you may want family photos with both of your parents, former spouses may refuse to be in photographs together. Find out ahead of time what is acceptable for them. If applicable, it is appropriate to include stepparents in some -- but not all -wedding pictures. You are not obligated to include a parent’s casual girlfriend or boyfriend in any formal pictures.

WHAT FUNERALS
MAY LOOK LIKE IN THE FUTURE
In a modern technology-driven society, social media is playing an increasingly integral role in people’s lives and deaths Updating Facebook, Twitter and Instagram has become a part of our daily routine. Many of us rely on social media to find love and others use it as a digital time capsule of sorts, using it to store important photographs and information. But what happens to a person’s social media presence once they have passed away? A new report has put the spotlight on the widespread lack of understanding around digital inheritance.
The study, conducted by family funeral directors, exposed modern attitudes towards death and funeral planning in the digital age.
According to researchers, the lack of understanding could mean people closest to those who have deceased will be left unable to access their online accounts.
It found a staggering 90 per cent of people are unaware of what a ‘Legacy Contact’ is - someone who is appointed to look after a Facebook account in the event of death.
The report highlights the impact technology is having on all areas of dying, bereavement and funeral services.
The research also revealed almost three quarters (74 per cent) of people have never heard of a ‘Digital Heir’ - which is the person to whom a person’s digital assets such as playlists, online photos and social media accounts are left to.
Notably, nearly a quarter (22 per cent) are more inclined to send their condolences online by writing on a person’s Facebook wall for example rather than the traditional hand-written method.

Another notable finding is that just over a fifth (21 per cent) of people have shared the way in which they wish to be remembered with loved ones. Almost one tenth (9 per cent) of those aged 16 - 19 said they want to reserve a virtual space online where they can be remembered.
QR codes on tombstones ? Made up of black and white squares, QR codes are patterns that are usually found on adverts, posters, and packaging. The camera on a smartphone can ‘read’ these codes, which usually will direct you to a specific website. Now people are choosing to add QR codes to their loved one’s tombstones and memorials, as a way of providing more information about that person. Visitors to the grave can use the code to view memorial websites or online obituaries, as an interactive mourning experience.
Although QR codes might be overtaken by a similar but more advanced technology in the near future, the idea of a digital, interactive graveyard could become reality. Imagine finding the tombstone of a long-lost ancestor, scanning a code, and being taken to a website detailing who they were and what they did. In this way, tombstones could become not just a physical memorial, but a gateway to a whole wealth of information on that person, an in-depth tribute to their memory.

KETO EATING The ketogenic diet (often termed keto) is a very low-carb, high-fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and low-carb diets. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake, and replacing it with fat. The reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.
T
he concept of ketogenic dieting is not new – it has existed in many forms and in many variations. It has many similarities to the Atkin’s Diet, and is cousins with other popular diets like South Beach and Paleo. Below, we’ve outlined exactly what the ketogenic diet is, how and why it works, and how you can get started with a ketogenic diet today. What is the ketogenic diet? A ketogenic diet is quite simply any diet that forces the body into a process called ketosis, whereby fats are burned instead of carbohydrates for use as energy. A proper ketogenic diet calls for the dieter to
consume high amounts of fat, adequate amounts of protein, and very low amounts of carbohydrates. Our bodies are used to turning carbohydrates into glucose to send all over the body as energy. When we enter ketosis by sufficiently limiting our carbohydrate intake, our livers start breaking down fat cells into fatty acids and ketones, to be used as energy. Ketogenic Diets control blood sugar and minimize insulin spikes. When we eat carbohydrates, our bloodglucose levels rise rapidly. This causes an equally rapid insulin response from
the pancreatic gland. The insulin disperses excess blood glucose, which causes you to feel hungry all over again. By eating a low carbohydrate diet, we keep our blood sugar levels low and steady, and as a result, carb-induced hunger spikes are avoided. Reducing insulin levels is paramount to success with any diet, as insulin is the hormone that tells our bodies to store fat. By keeping our insulin levels low, we create an environment within our bodies that limits fat storage and promotes fat lipolysis. How do I do a Keto Diet? Successful keto dieting is all about properly balancing your macronutrient ratios. It is generally recommended that ketogenic dieters should consume about 60% of their macronutrients from fat, 35% from protein, and 5% from carbohydrates. Carbohydrate intake should generally be limited to less than 50 grams per day. When starting out, it is generally recommended that you limit your carbohydrates to 20 grams per day, as being strict initially will make sure you enter

ketosis, and help you learn the ins and outs of successful low carbohydrate dieting. In your first few weeks, it is helpful to obsessively and accurately track every morsel of food or liquid that enters your body.
Here are two examples of how a low-carb meal can look, depending on how many carbs you eat per day (the yellow stuff is delicious herb butter).
A good way to keep track of your Keto diet is to use our smartphones to keep track of your food consumption – (MyFitnessPal and LoseIt! are both very popular apps.) After a while, you start to develop an understanding of how many grams of carbohydrates are in different kinds of food, and you quickly learn how to adjust your dietary habits to a low carb lifestyle. Always remember if your are starting a new diet regime please check with your GP that it will be healthy for you, especially if you are on any medications.

INTERMITTENT FASTING FOR BEGINNERS
Intermittent fasting is the ancient secret of health. It is ancient because it has been practiced throughout all of human history. It’s a secret because this powerful habit has been virtually forgotten. But now many people are re-discovering this dietary intervention. It can carry huge benefits if it is done right: weight loss, increased energy and many other things.
A
t its very core, fasting simply allows the body to burn off excess body fat. It is important to realize that this is normal and humans have evolved to fast without detrimental health consequences. Body fat is merely food energy that has been stored away. If you don’t eat, your body will simply “eat” its own fat for energy. When we eat, more food energy is ingested than can immediately be used. Some of this energy must be stored away for later use. Insulin is the key hormone involved in the storage of food energy. Insulin rises when we eat, helping to store the excess energy in two separate ways. Sugars can be linked into long chains, called glycogen and then stored in the liver. There is, however, limited storage space; and once that is reached, the liver starts to turn the excess glucose into fat. This process is called De-Novo Lipogenesis (meaning literally Making Fat from New). Some of this newly created fat is stored in the liver, but most of it is exported to other fat deposits in the body. While this is a more complicated process, there is no limit to the amount of fat that can be created. So, two complementary food energy storage systems exist in our bodies. One is easily accessible but with limited storage space (glycogen), and the other is more difficult to access but has unlimited storage space (body fat). The process goes in reverse when we do not eat (fasting). Insulin levels fall,
18 VISION MAGAZINE Issue 36 Visioniss36.indd 18
signaling the body to start burning stored energy as no more is coming through food. Blood glucose falls, so the body must now pull glucose out of storage to burn for energy. Glycogen is the most easily accessible energy source. It is broken down into glucose molecules to provide energy for the other cells. This can provide enough energy to power the body for 24-36 hours. After that, the body will start breaking down fat for energy. So, that the body only really exists in two states – the fed (insulin high) state and the fasted (insulin low) state. Either we are storing food energy, or we are burning it. It’s one or the other. If eating and fasting are balanced, then there is no net weight gain. If we start eating the minute we roll out of bed, and do not stop until we go to
sleep, we spend almost all our time in the fed state. Over time, we will gain weight. We have not allowed our body any time to burn food energy. To restore balance or to lose weight, we simply need to increase the amount of time we burn food energy (fasting). In essence, fasting allows the body to use its stored energy. After all, that’s what it is there for. The important thing to understand is that there is nothing wrong with that. That is how our bodies are designed. That’s what dogs, cat, lions and bears do. That’s what humans do. If you are constantly eating, as is often recommended, then your body will simply use the incoming food energy and never burn the body fat. You’ll only store it. Your body will save it for a time when there is nothing to eat.
Insulin rises when we eat
Always remeber if your are starting a new diet regime please check with your GP that it will be healthy for you, espcailly if you are on any medications.

All the Missing Girls Megan Miranda
A clever, suspense-filled story told in reverse, from day 15 through to day 1, and boy does the premise work! Nicolette returns home after a letter from her dementia ravaged father suggests an answer to the disappearance of her best friend ten years before. A second girl goes missing while Nicolette is home, and as the story twists backwards through time, how on earth it didn’t trip over itself I really don’t know. Megan Miranda, in her first novel for adults, skilfully handles the tour through time, I felt completely absorbed and focused as each new titbit of information changed my feelings and sent my thoughts spinning. As the story increased in intensity and neared the climax, I almost couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough. ‘All the Missing Girls’ hooked me from the get-go, it pushed all of my thoughts into one big pot of edgy, stimulating tension, ensuring a great, great read
Disney’s animated classic takes on a new form, with a widened mythology and an all-star cast. A young prince, imprisoned in the form of a beast, can be freed only by true love. What may be his only opportunity arrives when he meets Belle, the only human girl to ever visit the castle since it was enchanted. Starring: Emma Watson, Ewan McGregor, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Emma Thompson
Behind Her Eyes Sarah Pinborough The considerable buzz building around Pinborough’s new novel (following the already mightily impressive The Death House and 13 Minutes) is led not only from her respective publishers’ camp but also, more importantly, from advance readers, and is fully deserved. This could well become a massive commercial success along the lines of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train and it held me in thrall from beginning to end. The tale of a dark, puzzling and twisted affair that goes horribly wrong for, seemingly, all parties, it’s unpredictable, tricky, immediate, gut-gripping and difficult to summarise without giving out any of the shattering spoilers and seduces like no other, with viewpoints changing in front of your eyes as you turn the page, putting all you’ve read before into question in a most clever way, sowing constant seeds of doubt the moment you begin to identify with one of the characters and sympathise with them. Imaginatively wicked, ingenious, and ‘that’ ending will leave you open-mouthed.

Is spring the best time to buy or sell your property? Unsurprisingly it is said that spring is one of the best times to put your property on the market, in truth there are Pro’s and Con’s for selling at any time of year. Yes, winter is bleak but with less competition buyers have less to choose from so may be prepared to pay a better price to get the right home. Without doubt homes start to look more attractive as the lighter nights come in and the gardens start to bloom therefore it’s understandable that more people decide to sell at this time of year but with the added competition from everyone else who has decided to wait until spring to sell you need to make sure that you are doing everything possible to make your home as appealing as possible. So having decided to sell……
What are the biggest turnoffs when it comes to viewing a property? When it comes to viewing a property, there are many key areas that potential buyers will be looking at, depending on their needs. However, no matter what the requirements of the viewer, they will all be looking for a clean and tidy property that makes them feel at home.
neighbour to see if there is any overwhelming smell. Forego the ‘baking bread’ trick though: fresh flowers and scented candles are top tips
Dirty washing
Dirty dishes or, even worse, clothes, should be hidden away or cleaned. It is understandable to have a dirty mug on the sideboard, but a series of dirty dishes, or a basket full of clothes waiting to be cleaned is not a welcome sight.
Warmth
As we are all aware this country can have its fair share of freezing cold days even in spring! Make sure that the heating is on and the home is comfortable.
Unmade bed
One of the easiest ways to make your house seem a little bit tidier is to make the bed – and tuck your pyjamas under your pillow. A nicely made bed with plumped up pillows will make a bedroom seem like home.
Untidy garden
From uncut grass to unkempt trees and bushes, the garden can be the first impression of a house, so make sure it is a good one! Rake any leaves, mow the lawn and trim any untidy bushes to make sure the garden is spick and span.
Bad smells
From cigarette smoke to wet dog, one of the biggest no-nos is a smelly house. The problem can be that you get used to the smell of your own property – whether it is nice or nasty. It is best to get a second opinion, from a family member, friend or
