A Dreamy Evening

Fashion Article by: Sarah McGough The sun was shining and the air was warm on Friday evening as we headed to Carluke for a fashion show showcasing fashions from Divine Dreams Boutique in association with The Hair Chair. The event took place in the salon itself and it proved to be a fitting location for the show with gorgeous lighting and glamorous décor as the backdrop to a show full of beautiful fashions. The staff from the salon were great hostesses ensuring a glass of bubbly was in hand throughout the evening. The owners from the boutique did a great job of talking us through each carefully styled look. The hair was also taken into consideration to compliment each outfit specifically. The hair colour of the evening was inspired by the ‘French Girl’, rich chocolate browns with effortlessly textures waves and movement. The wonder hair product of the evening however, which was used on most of the models hair was a clear gloss. The product which you can use yourself at home instantly added vibrancy and sparkling shine to the hair leaving a super healthy polished look. Moving onto fashion there was definitely a piece for everyone in the array of versatile looks. From cute floral trousers and floaty feminine tops to ladylike dresses and funky jumpsuits, the range of styles was truly impressive. The majority of styles ranged from 8-14

with ladies of all shapes and sizes modelling the garments beautifully. Showcasing brands like Closet who’s pieces regularly appear on our television screens with some of the countries best loved presenters and personalities opting for the figure flattering feminine cuts and pretty colours and patterns. Barbecue Pork Burgers

METHOD

Make the Coleslaw In a bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, milk, and vinegar until smooth. Toss in the cabbage, carrot, chives, and salt and pepper to taste and gently mix to coat. Let the coleslaw stand at room temperature, uncovered, while you cook the burgers or, if you prefer your coleslaw crisp, cover it and refrigerate for up to 8 hours. Make the barbecue pork burgers

INGREDIENTS For the coleslaw 1/4 cup store bought or homemade mayonnaise 1 tablespoon milk 1 1/2 teaspoons white wine vinegar 2 cups thinly sliced green cabbage 1/2 cup very finely shredded carrot 1 tablespoon thinly sliced chives or scallions Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the pork burgers 1/2 cup your fave store-bought or homemade barbecue sauce (tomato-based) 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 1/2 pounds ground pork 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Olive oil, for the grill rack Preparation time: 25 minutes 4 buns

In a small bowl, stir together the barbecue sauce, cayenne, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and vinegar. In a large bowl, gently mix together the pork, the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, pepper, and 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce mixture until combined. Do not over-mix. Using your hands, gently form the mixture into 4 patties, each about 4 inches in diameter and 3/4 inch thick, being careful not to pack the pork too tightly. Grill burgers, flipping the burgers every few minutes, just until cooked through and no trace of pink remains, 6 to 10 minutes total. Then brush the top of each patty with 1 tablespoon remaining barbecue sauce mixture (or more if you like things mess), flip the burgers again, and grill for 30 seconds. Repeat, so that both sides have been covered with the barbecue sauce mixture. Brush the cut sides of each of the buns with the remaining barbecue sauce mixture. Assemble the barbecue pork burgers, starting with the buns and Cooking time: 30 minutes the burgers and adding a heaping spoonful of coleslaw atop each one. Blood Torment (DCI Andy Gilchrist) by T F Muir Two-year-old Katie Davis was abducted from her mother’s home some time in the early hours of the morning. There’s something wrong though and DCI Andy Gilchrist suspects that Andrea Davis might have abducted - possibly even murdered - her own child. Then it starts to get political when Gilchrist discovers that Davis’ father is Dougal Davis, the former MSP who was forced to resign his seat when he was accused of physically abusing his third wife. Even disgraced politicians have some clout and there’s the added complication of the fact that Davis’s first wife went to school Gilchrist’s ultimate boss. Just to make matters even worse Gilchrist finds that he could be working with DI Tosh MacIntosh - a man for whom he has no respect. But could there be an answer to the abduction in the form of Sammie Bell, a convicted paedophile who had moved back to his home town just a few weeks ago? Gilchrist is very much part of a team (rather than the rogue cop who goes off and solves cases all on his own despite his superiors’ best attempts to impede him) and I liked the relationship between him and DS Jessie Janes, who’ll make you cringe with some of the things she says, but usually because you hope that you’d have had the guts to say them yourself, but know you wouldn’t. It’s a good story and the plot has more layers than an onion. Gilchrist’s stationed in St Andrews, which might sound nice, but has the same sort of problems as everywhere else and rich and poor living cheek by jowl. Nothing’s quite as simple as it might look on the surface and the Davis family certainly has more than its fair share of secrets they’d prefer to stay that way. There’s a lot of unravelling to do and there are times when Gilchrist wonders if he’s losing his touch - or if his job might be in danger. It’s a very satisfying solution though - and it ticks all the boxes.

The Monstrous Child by Francesca Simon Hel is the ultimate gloomy, angst-ridden teen. Her dad’s hardly ever around, her mum is at best indifferent to her, and her brothers are evil little beasts. She lives in a land of sleet and noise and ice. But that’s not the worst of it. She has been, since birth, half human and half corpse, with all the accompanying odours that produces, and - wait for it – there’ll never be an end to her misery because she’s eternal. And you feel hard done by because you have to take the occasional exam? So which is worse - living a whole life in low-level misery, shoulders hunched against the world as you stagger around on gangrenous legs hugging a grudge the size of Antarctica? Or being whisked away for a few brief moments of happiness, where the sweetest guy ever smiles at you and doesn’t seem to even notice the stench of rotting flesh, just before you’re condemned to rule forever in the fog-world of the dead? Not much of a choice, is it? Not that anyone asked Hel for her opinion, mind you.

Ghostbusters Release Date: July 15th 2016 Ghostbusters makes its long-awaited return, rebooted with a cast of hilarious new characters. Thirty years after the beloved original franchise took the world by storm, director Paul Feig brings his fresh take to the supernatural comedy, joined by some of the funniest actors working today – Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth. This summer, they’re here to save the world!

After all this, you wouldn’t exactly expect our heroine to be a cheery little soul, would you? Unlike the author’s other stories based on Norse legends, which manage to find light-hearted moments in the midst of all the deadly peril, the tone here would make your average Goth seem positively upbeat. After a short time in the balmy groves of Asgard (not that time has any real meaning to the gods and goddesses who dwell there) she’s been ripped away from her beloved Baldr (conveniently ignoring the fact that he has a wife and son), her guests are decomposing and there’s a nasty little dragon nearby whose favourite snack treat is slow-roasted dead person. Okay, she gets to be queen, but that’s hardly a plus in a place where nobody, but nobody, wants to be, including her.
