Idea That Fly was open to those practicing in any area of art and design who wished to contribute. On an A4 page provided, we asked for an ‘idea’ about how creative practice is mobilized. We called for techniques, tactics, processes, mantras, exercises, and beliefs that shape, motivate and enable the creative act – something about approaches to practice, a technique or process designed or frequently employed, or something indicative of the direction a practice may be headed. A selection of A4 pages were provided – each with the lines of a different paper plane folding pattern on the surface. could choose one, and either ignore or respond to the lines. We literally launched each ‘idea’, folded into a paper plane at an event on May 7, 2013. As part of the event, we projected images of the (unfolded) pages, and filmed the flight of the folded planes in front of their images. This took place at RMIT’s Design Hub as part of a symposium on design innovation and the official launch of the AD issue: The Innovation Imperative: Architecture of Vitality. All contributions have been compiled here into this online publication. The project and this booklet were primarily a celebratory act – a collective enjoyment of creative practice as a cultural activity, and the vitality and diversity to be found therein.
