President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the price regulation of medicines used for the treatment of the most common diseases among Filipinos, saying the move will make affordable and quality drugs more accessible to the public. Duterte on Tuesday signed Executive Order (EO) 155 which sets the maximum retail prices (MRP) and maximum wholesale prices (MWP) of 87 selected drug molecules or 133 drug formulas which are used for the leading causes of morbidity in the Philippines. “Consistent with the overall strategy under Republic Act 11223 or the Universal Health Care Act, to improve access to affordable and quality medicines and reduce health-related out-of-pocket expenses of Filipinos, there is a need to further impose MRP and MWP on other drugs and medicines commonly used for the leading causes of morbidity in the country,” the President said. The drug formulas included

in his latest EO are used for bone metabolism, analgesics, anesthetics, anti-angina, anti-arrhythmic, anti-asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease medicines, antibiotics, anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, antidiabetic drugs, antidiuretics, and antiemetics. Also covered in the order are drug molecules and formulas utilized in medicines against glaucoma, hypercholesterolemia, hypertensive medicines, neoplastic or cancer, Parkinson’s, and overactive bladders. Growth hormone inhibitors, immunosuppressant drugs, iron chelating agents, and medicines against psoriasis, seborrhea and ichthyosis are also included. Duterte’s EO requires all manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, traders, and retailers to “display the retail price which
shall not exceed the MRP” as stated in the order. The President also said that the MRP — preceded by the words “Retail Price Not To Exceed” and “Under Drug Price Regulation” — should be clearly printed on a red strip and label of the drugs’ immediate container. Violations of the EO should be dealt with in accordance with RA 9502 or the Universally Accessible Cheaper and Quality Medicines Act of 2008 and other related laws, Duterte said. The President also directed the Presidential Communications Operations Office and other government agencies to provide the necessary support to the DoH in terms of information dissemination, enforcement, and implementation of his EO. The order will take effect upon its publication in the Official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation. PIA Bulletin Online 6

Rody ends term with 99M vaxxed Gab Humilde Villegas The Daily Tribune
The government on Thursday expressed confidence that it could surpass its target of vaccinating 70 percent of the more than 100 million Filipinos, saying it could inoculate 99 million — or 90 percent — before President Rodrigo Duterte’s term ends on 30 June 2022. That’s 90 percent of the country’s total population, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said as he also confidently said that the Department of Health (DoH) will meet its target of fully vaccinating 54 million Filipinos by end of 2021. “I’m confident that we will be able to achieve this at the rate we are going and we have proven (it) in the first three days of massive vaccination rollout. I hope this will pave the way for us to achieve the second milestone which hopefully, we will be able to accomplish early in the first quarter of next year — and that is reaching 77 million Filipinos with completed jabs all over the country,” Duque said. “And the third milestone of course — as the President’s marching order has been for us to inoculate no less than 90 percent of the Philippine population which is equivalent to about 99 million Filipinos. That’s before the end of the

administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte,” he added. Duque urged the public to take part in the government’s Covid-19 vaccination campaign, saying that the vaccines will help prevent “severe to critical Covid-19 infection, hospitalization, and death.” “Studies have shown that unvaccinated people have two times (the) chance or risk of contracting severe to critical Covid-19 infection; and almost three times that an unvaccinated individual may die, especially those belonging to A2 (senior citizens) and A3 (immunocompromised),” he said. Despite concerns on the Omicron variant, Duque said that vaccination is a vital tool

to fight it. “(I hope) Omicron will not lead to serious and severe critical Covid cases because I think we can no longer afford another spike, surge… Covid has really brought the economies of the different countries in the world and especially the Philippines to its knees,” he said. He also reminded the public that they still need to follow basic health protocols, even if fully vaccinated. “Vaccination is a vital component in our response. However, we cannot be complacent just because we have been completely vaccinated or some already received a booster dose,” Duque said. The DoH said no omicron variant has yet to reach the country.
