DOH, DTI: No paracetamol shortage
Jom Garner
The Daily Tribune
The Department of Health (DoH) has denied there’s presently a shortage of paracetamol and similar drugs for flu-like symptoms, amid the sudden demand for them after the holidays. In a statement, the DoH said it has consulted major drugstore chains, as well as local manufacturers and suppliers in the country, regarding the supply of the said medicines. “The DoH would like to assure the public that while there is an observed increased demand for such products, there is no ongoing shortage in the Philippines,” the agency said. “Paracetamol has many generic alternatives in the market, which are available in many drugstores
nationwide,” it added. The department said it is constantly monitoring the status of supply of critical medicines for Covid-19, including supportive medicines for symptomatic treatment. It also assured the public that the agency is working with all concerned government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to secure the needed health products in line with the country’s fight against Covid-19. The agency appealed to the public to refrain from hoarding, panic-buying or the unnecessary purchases of the mentioned drugs. Likewise, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said that his agency has yet to receive reports of a shortage of paracetamol. “We haven’t received any reports
on the shortage, especially paracetamol,” Lopez said in a media briefing. “There are still more. It also has other generic [brands]. It is not a cause for concern,” he added. The DTI said that the temporary tight supply may be due to the late replenishment of stocks in various drugstores. Meanwhile, Pharmaceutical company Unilab announced Tuesday that some of its products are currently not available in select drugstores due to extraordinary demand. “We assure you that we are working with our partner drugstores and retailers to accelerate replenishment at the soonest possible time,” it added. Man quarantine hotels, PNP told John Roson
The Daily Tribune
Policemen will not only conduct surprise, random inspections of the designated quarantine hotels following the escape of a guest who turned out positive for Covid-19 last week. Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos has also ordered the force to station personnel in quarantine hotels aside from the completion of their usual duties and functions. Carlos instructed PNP Deputy Chief for Operations Lt. Gen. Israel Ephraim Dickson to “strategize and rationalize” the deployment, PNP spokesperson PITPIT ISIP

Col. Roderick Augustus Alba disclosed on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. The order came after President Rodrigo Duterte told Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, and in effect the PNP leadership, to station lawmen in hotels to prevent returning overseas Filipinos from skipping quarantine. Duterte also asked the PNP to deploy about 600 cops who will monitor the quarantine hotels. Año had earlier ordered the PNP to conduct random or “surprise” inspections at quarantine hotels.
