ACADEMIC PROJECT

01

Master’s degree

DECEMBER 2020, FIRENZE

Da Campus Regis a Campus Ospedaliero-Universitario.

Studio per la trasformazione degli spazi aperti dell’Azienda di Careggi a Firenze.

The project is based on the redevelopment and reconfiguration of the spaces inside the Careggi Campus. A different management of internal mobility is proposed, ensuring access to emergency vehicles, service vehicles and private cars for accompanying the disabled. A definition of hierarchy of street spaces is suggested, abolishing the distinction between lanes for pedestrian and vehicles headquarters. This operation aims to reconfigure the urban space of Careggi, promoting a sustainable use of the campus spaces. The primary objective is the qualitative improvement of the landscape of Careggi Campus through the introduction of plants and the use of a porous ground: these elements generate positive effects on the microclimate of the site, on the psycho-physical well-being of the users and on the hydrogeological and environmental component of the landscape.

The creation of a system of green spaces, with the introduction of new tree and herbaceous species, has the aim of improving the visual identity and ecological aspects of the campus. The plant component in fact generates various ecosystem services that contribute to the qualitative improvement of a site and that produce social and psycho-physical benefits. The presence of green spaces therefore facilitates a better water balance between soil and atmosphere, a temperate microclimate and the correct management of the flow of surface waters. The increase in tree and shrub species on campus is primarily aimed at increasing biodiversity in the urban environment, as these constitute a habitat for numerous insects, birds and small mammals.

RELAZIONE ILLUSTRATIVA

The theme of the Restoration Laboratory is to elaborate a restoration project for the Boboli Gardens and in particular to propose solutions and ideas for a specific garden chosen by students. The aim of this project is to understand in depth the complexity of the identity characteristics that gravitate around places with a strong historical tradition: in fact, in addition to particular attention, they require good maintenance and conservation practices. So it is necessary to deepen the historical and landscape context in which they are located in order to understand the relationships and connections that these places have with the surrounding environment.

A scheme of lighting for visits and night events has been introduced, designed to enhance both the statuary components such as the fountain, and to create evocative effects with plant elements, as the illumination on the ground of the axes of the parterre and the lights filtered by the foliage of the Banksiae.

Laboratory

II semester - 2018/2019

Design of the urban systems of the green areas This project focuses on the urban environment of the city of Florence: the theme of analysis is the future construction of the new tram line 3.2 that serves as a link between Piazza della Libertà and the neighbouring town of Bagno a Ripoli, which will cross the south-east of Florence, passing through the Circonvallazione, the Lungarni del Tempio and Colombo, the district of Gavinana, Viale Europa. This infrastructural element invites one to rethink the urban mobility and infrastructure network .as a whole while considering it critically and potentially in order to improve its efficiency.

MARCH 2018, PALERMO

Temporary Gardens: Micro Gardens as Collective Spaces

The design workshop focused on creating a temporary 3-by-3-m garden. Each group of participants chose a theme which guided the selection of plants. The theme of my group was herbaceous and shade plants. “The shadows of Narcissus” is the title we have chosen for our garden. The garden was surrounded by black veils and at the entrance there was a path that would lead to a small pond with a Narcissus at its center. The water of the pond acted as a mirror for the visitor, in an allusion to the figure from Greek mythology, Narcissus, who fell in love with his own image reflected on the water. Two additional allusions to the myth of Narcissus have been placed along the path: the first, located at the entrance, consisted of the words “you are here”, which led visitors to find a mirror in front of them; the second consisted of two strings of Liriope muscari which ran along the path and that alluded to Narciso’s eponymous mother, Liriope.

APRIL 2017, PISTOIA

Public Space as “Healing of Humankind”

The design workshop was dedicated to the redevelopment of the formed hospital Ceppo for a new strategic hub in the historic center of Pistoia. The research group of the University of Palermo, led by Prof. Manfredi Leone, of which I am a member, has dealt with the design of public spaces in this area. We consulted the local population and other professionals about the details and outcomes of the project implementation. In particular, we proposed to create a space with medicinal plants near the road, and a space to play next to the pavilions. In particular our idea was to created an area of medicinal plants near the road, while next to the pavillions it was decided to insert a space to play. The work was presented at the Biennale dello Spazio Pubblico 2017 event in Rome thanks to the collaboration between the several universities that participated in this experience.

Su&Giù - A Pop-up Garden

The “Su&Giù” project was the result of a fruitful collaboration between the following organizations: OrtoCapovolto and LandLabPa, Ballarò Significa Palermo, AIAPP, Italia Nostra, SOS Ballarò, Associazione Mercato storico di Ballarò, Associazione Cassaro Alto, Via Maqueda. Our group’s job was to transform Salita Raffadali, a small street in Palermo, into an oasis that would allow a break from the city. Passers-by were able to enjoy a garden - more or less imaginary - some seats and a lawn painted on the asphalt. The idea was to create not only a passageway, but a place to stop for a few minutes. The residents spontaneously took care of the plants, establishing a relationship with the public space. “Would you ever have thought” was our slogan: “would you ever have thought that with very little you can change the way you think about a place?” “Would you ever have thought that people who want to change the world actually do it?”
