SUGAR SUBSTITUTES AND ALTERNATIVES

Honey: Not only sweet, it’s loaded with health benefi ts and ensures quicker browning and more moisture in baked goods. Substitute 1 cup regular sugar with ½ cup honey, and reduce the amount of other liquids used in a recipe by ¼ cup (60ml). Apple sauce: Contains less calories and is high in fi bre. Look for unsweetened brands. Substitute 1 cup (250ml) regular sugar with 1 cup (250ml) apple sauce, or equal parts depending on recipe quantity, and reduce the amount of other liquids used in a recipe by ¼ cup (60ml). Coconut sugar: Sourced from the sap of coconut palms, it has a lower GI than cane sugar. Substitute 1 cup (250ml) regular sugar with 1 cup (250ml) coconut sugar, or equal parts depending on recipe quantity. Maple syrup: Using this, you can cut down your sugar consumption by about 33%. Substitute 1 cup regular sugar with ¾ cup (180ml) maple syrup, and reduce the amount of other liquid in a recipe by ¼ cup (60ml) for every cup of syrup used.
