MACDONALDS SOUTH AFRICA 25TH BIRTHDAY Twenty-five years ago, McDonald’s arrived in South Africa and opened its first restaurant on the 11th of
November 1995 in Blackheath, Johannesburg. Since then, the restaurant chain has become a household name and today McDonald’s South Africa has over 300 restaurants across South Africa’s nine provinces, serving around eight million customers each month.
MACDONALDS SOUTH AFRICA 25TH BIRTHDAY Q: How is McDonald’s SA celebrating 25 years of McDonald’s in South Africa? A: We are celebrating the customers who have shown unwavering support for the brand throughout the years. As part of the celebrations, the brand hosted Big Mac Day on 11 November 2020, which saw Big Mac lovers from all corners of South Africa being able to buy the iconic Big Mac burger for only R25. We also hosted a supercharged Drive Thru record attempt on 14 November 2020 at the McDonald’s Kyalami restaurant. The event saw members of The Daytona Supercar Club, The Lamborghini Club South Africa and private owners all come out to put their cars and driving skills to the test as they raced through the world class Drive Thru, designed specifically for speed of service. The drivers clocked up an impressive 157 cars in 15 minutes through the Drive Thru, exceeding the 100-car target that was set. On 18 November 2020, our CEO, Greg Solomon hosted some Cape Town media for a luncheon to discover more about McDonald’s 25-year-old history in the country and share key insights about brand, giving guests a future view for the business. The brand also announced a collaboration with renowned fashion designer, Gert Johan Coetzee, who has designed an exclusive McDonald’s capsule collection. The launch of the limited-edition collection is another way that we are celebrating our customers – and thanking them for their support and loyalty over the years. The new collection is designed with our customers in mind, it’s comfortable, wearable and fun – a definite embodiment of our brand.
