Druhou bola výstava Shut Up! — Voice of democracy in danger.
A čakal som. Take veľké množstvo plagátov som nebol schopný umiestniť v tejto knihe ani na výstave a musel som pristúpiť k výberu približne 354 plagátov. Verím tiež, že táto aktivita nezanedbateľnou mierou pomôže propagácii mesta Bardejov a jeho okolia vo svete.
After several years of dreaming, I managed to organize a Poster Quadrennial Bardejov competition in 2017, which was very successful. However, the idea that the exhibition of the poster in Bardejov will be held only once in 4 years seems to be insufficient, so I decided to prepare a world exposure every year in our city. I organized 3 exhibitions in Bardejov in 2018. The first one was the Chinese Poster Exhibition, where we presented 128 posters designed by 116 Chinese authors, with curation by Li Xu. The second exhibition was named: Shut Up! — Voice of democracy in danger. This project was organised by Mykola Kovalenko, who called upon designers to create posters in the memory of Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová. During the Pink Bicycle festival, we presented 32 posters from 32 authors in front of the Thick Bastion. The third exhibition was commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution — the project of the Russian curator Sergei Serov. He did selection from about 1500 posters, a series of 500 posters for various exhibitors around the world. In the City of Bardejov, we presented all 500 posters, which were also published in my catalogue. Together we have presented 660 posters of 588 authors from various parts of the world in Bardejov within a year. After these activities, Serge Serov invited me to Moscow Design Week to present Bardejov as a city on the world map of poster exhibitions and have a small discourse about this topic. The presentation was great, the translation into Russian was provided by graphic designer Peter Bankov. After this presentation, I was aware that I had already exceeded the FPU grant. So I said to myself that the following year I would spend on holidays, gaining new strength, looking for new opportunities, and organizing the next exhibition in 2020. Sure, relaxing… it took me just two months to me to start flirting with the idea of creating a new call for posters themed the City of Bardejov. The starting point, for us, was the platform www.bardejov.travel, designed recently in cooperation with my college Milan Škorupa. In this complex portal can one find a number of information about the history, local interests, and city. The only task left was to send invitations. I set the deadline to 4 and a half months. In the beginning, I ask to join only a closed group of designers. Even though posters started coming, there wasn’t much of them. Finally, I decided to make an open call. The interest was cosmic, so it ended up inviting people slap-bang. I guess I invited around 500 — 700 designers
and social networks were overwhelmed by my invitations. Impact of social networks caused about 300 designers requested to attend the exhibition. I invited them all, indeed. And I waited. Just 3 days passed, and Michał Dyakowski (PL) wrote to me if everything was fine, he sent me a poster and he had no feedback. I didn’t expect such an interest, the first poster was in my mail, already. A day after, Jerzy Skakun (PL) sent poster too. Surprisingly, both of them sent the same motif — a sketched sculpture of figure sticking out a bare ass as a symbol of the irony to a lord mayor, located at our historic town hall. I was worried that this gothic-renaissance phenomenon would be the central theme of too many works. Thank God, it didn’t happen. After a short break, a poster from Slovak designer Peter Eliáš and Polish designers Agnieszka Popek-Banach and Kamil Banach were accepted. Accordingly, at the beginning arrived posters from two Chinese designers and a couple of posters by Vladimir Pomitkin from Russia. After wards, the next poster was sent by Jakub Lenart, a designer from Bardejov who elaborated and illustrated the theme of Creative people from our surroundings. But no one sent a poster the following month. Altogether I had only 14 posters, and I started to worry if this was not the final number — though there was still 3 and a half months till the deadline. That is why I created a public group on Facebook, where I invited both foreign designers from all over the world, but also local people from our surroundings. And then the explosion started. In the beginning, I used to upload one poster per day, until many designers started progressing rapidly. They began to perceive various inspirations, which led to creating new posters. It cased that we received about 30 — 40 posters per week, and the frequency of uploading posters to the social network increased to every 2 hours. In the end, even 100 posters per week were committed, so I had to put them online every hour. The last poster came 12 minutes before the deadline, from the world graphical designer, Lex Drewinsky. I very much appreciate the whole project, including communication with foreign designers from all over the world. I managed to collect 462 posters from 338 authors from 40 countries, including all continents. I had to select approximately 354 posters because I was unable to place such a large number of posters in this book, neither in the exhibition. I also believe that this activity will help to promote the City of Bardejov and its surroundings around the world.
