School

1. Overhead projectors and filmstrips. Remember those? Most of us jumped at the chance to be the student chosen to manually move the strip forward at the sound of the tone. We all wished we could be the one writing with squeaky markers on the overhead sheets. Plus, who among us didn’t try at least once to sneak in a quick nap when the classroom darkened? Now computers have taken the place of these audiovisual devices. PowerPoint presentations, digital projectors and videos do the job in our kids’ classrooms.

2. Peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches. With the prevalence of nut allergies and severity of risks, many schools now ban any peanut or tree nut products within their walls. This means no more peanut butter-and-jelly sandwiches in school lunches, although alternatives, such as sunflowerseed spread, are beginning to fill the gap.

the school day, except in gym, due to the risk of injury. 5. Open front doors. Gone are the days when you could walk right into an elementary school. Because of the potential for violence, many schools have installed security systems that require visitors to be buzzed into the building. Along with these measures have come “lock-down drills,” during which students and teachers practice what to do in the event of a school security breach. 6. Mimeographed papers. Remember that smell? The days of duplicating via mimeograph machine are a thing of the past. Now teachers use photocopiers and printers for making multiple copies of papers for students. 7. Birthday treats. No more bringing smiley-face cookies to celebrate a student’s special day. In an effort to do their part in the battle against childhood obesity, schools have begun forbidding treats, with the exception of requesting foods and/or drinks for sanctioned school celebrations. This means no more homemade cupcakes. Also, some schools no longer allow teachers to use sweets and food as a behavior incentive. 8. Typewriters. Since middleand high-school students no longer use typewriters, they’re being taught “keyboarding” (formerly known as “typing”)

at younger and younger ages. Now that there are computer labs in the majority of schools, teachers typically set time aside each week for students to practice their keyboarding skills and learn how to use common computer programs. 9. Fluoride rinse. Some states still conduct regular fluoride rinse programs in schools. Others have ceased these programs. These days, many municipalities already add fluoride to their water supply, so there is less of a need for fluoride rinse programs. 10. Lunch money. Thanks to the advent of scanners, many schools are phasing in the use of swipe cards to pay for school lunches. Parents send a check or go online to load the cards, then students use the cards to buy lunch. This is one change that any parent who ever had their lunch money stolen by the school bully can appreciate. It also means no more stolen or lost coins on the way to school. No matter how much changes about the education system though, one thing remains constant: a child’s need for support and encouragement. Parents thankfully have been and will continue to be there to provide that. Lara Krupicka, a freelance writer, is surprised how much things have changed since her eldest started elementary school. She has three girls — ages 16, 14, and 11.

Should ll you enro irt’ or ‘redsh g your risin r? rtne kinderga BY DR. KRISTEN WYNNS

A

cross North Carolina, many parents must make what seems like a life-changing decision for their rising kindergartners: Enroll or redshirt? The option to enroll a child who is not quite 5 years old — or who may have just turned 5 — often complicates parents’ decision-making process. The redshirt option allows parents to wait a year before enrolling their child in kindergarten.

12

EDUCATION GUIDE 2015-2016

|

Too Much Too Soon? If your child turns 5 on or before Aug. 31, he will be able to bounce into a kindergarten class that year. If your child turns 5 on Sept. 1 or later, and you would like to enroll him in kindergarten, you must go through an intense application process that involves submitting work samples and letters of recommendation, as well as IQ and achievement testing, to determine if he is eligible for early entry. Some parents say the school system and others discouraged them from considering the early entry process. “Everyone I told that I was considering having my son, Connor, tested for early entry kindergarten did nothing but tell me that he would never pass the test because they never knew of anyone to pass that test,” says Melissa S., a mother of three in Apex who wishes to remain anonymous. “They continued, saying it’s a waste of money and that I shouldn’t push my child to test because he’s a boy and they

PiedmontParent.com

are too immature.” Melissa proceeded with the early-entry testing and found it was the right path for her family to take. “I knew my son was more than ready emotionally, physically, socially and academically,” she says. “Connor is 8 years old now and going into the fourth grade. He is the youngest, but top in his class since kindergarten. This coming school year, he’s even enrolled in AIG classes. He is thriving!” Potential advantages of early enrollment include:  Providing a challenging and enriching curriculum for a child who is ready and excited about school. 

Sending a child to kindergarten with preschool peers and buddies. Less financial obligations, since parents no longer have to pay daycare or preschool tuition. (Keep in mind, however, there is a cost for earlyenrollment testing and some working parents

A child will be cared for during the day, which allows parents more time to work or focus on other siblings.

Potential disadvantages of early entry include:  If a child is emotionally, socially or behaviorally immature, you may be setting him up for academic and emotional struggles. 

If a child is not academically ready, she may experience a very frustrating year and develop a negative attitude toward school.

Too Late or Just Right? Redshirting is a concept taken from college sports, through which athletes practice with their team for the first year, but sit out during competitions to become stronger and more competitive for the next year. When it comes to kindergarten, redshirting involves holding a child back from starting kindergarten at age 5 to give that child an extra year to develop emotionally, academically and physically. Charlotte mom Michelle Vigor says redshirting her son was a very difficult and personal decision for her and her husband. “We both agreed that he followed directions well and was a good listener,” she says, but decided “to give time for more development of gross and fine motor skills, as well as emotional growth.” Vigor says she has no regrets because her son “had a fantastic year, and I would make the same decision again in a heartbeat.” Retired Wake County teacher Patti Neptun, who taught kindergarten for 15 of her 37 years as a teacher, says the parents she knows who redshirted their kindergartners never experienced regret over this decision. “I’ve had many parents who allowed their child to start as early as possible, and many ended up regretting it,” Neptun says. “But of all the parents who waited to let their kindergartener to start as an older 5- or 6-year-old, not one ever regretted that decision.” Potential advantages of redshirting include:  Giving a child an advantage to succeed

TAKING A Transitional Approach

academically, socially and athletically.

may still need to pay for after-school care.) 

Giving a child who may be socially or emotionally immature a chance to “ripen” before encountering the demands of kindergarten.

Potential disadvantages of redshirting include:  Facing negative reactions from critics who believe redshirting sets up an imbalanced and unfair playing field for other kids who are age-appropriate for their grade. 

Missing the chance to make that leap to kindergarten with preschool or daycare peers.

Transitional kindergarten can bridge the gap between redshirting and repeating another year of preschool. Many parents and teachers view transitional kindergarten as how kindergarten was “back in the day.” Classrooms take a more developmental approach that emphasizes children’s social and emotional needs, versus taking a fast-paced academic approach. OTHER BENEFITS INCLUDE:  Children learn how to wait their turn, share and

play with other children.  Most learning is done through hands-on activities.

Making the Call When the time comes to make the decision about whether to enroll or redshirt your child, try to be realistic about her social, emotional and academic skills. Focus more on academic and social readiness, versus chronological age or size. Signs of readiness include:  Knows ABCs or sight words, and can count from 1 to 10. 

 

Has demonstrated an ability to sit for periods of time in a structured setting and attend to a lesson. Can handle separation from mom and dad well. Is able to play well with peers and demonstrates respect for adult authority figures. Can handle transitions during the day from one activity to the next.

Still aren’t sure? Get a second opinion. Ask your child’s preschool teacher, pediatrician or coach about whether they think your child might be ready for kindergarten. Many child psychologists offer a brief “screening” to more thoroughly assess your child’s emotional, social, behavioral and academic skills. Consider what else your child will be doing if she does not start kindergarten. Will she repeat a preschool program with much younger children or enroll in a transitional kindergarten class? Assess your child’s learning “window.”

 Teachers strive to make learning fun to set a

positive tone and help develop a child’s love of school.  There is typically less retention of transitional

kindergarten students once they enter a standard kindergarten program.

NEGATIVES TO CONSIDER:  Transitional kindergarten adds a year of schooling

and can lead to boredom if a child is academically ready for the higher demands of a regular kindergarten classroom.  Although many parents and teachers believe

holding a student back will result in higher achievement scores, most research suggests those advantages typically disappear by third grade.

Is he excited about starting kindergarten and bored with preschool lessons? No matter when your child starts kindergarten, it’s a new beginning for him — and you. Project a positive and calm manner when discussing kindergarten with or around your child so that when you do send him off to kindergarten, your family will be able to cherish the memory of that special day. Read

TO

Achieve

Changes to mandated program result in progress BY ANNE WOOTEN GREEN

After a rough first year, the North Carolina-mandated Read to Achieve program is showing progress by increasing the number of third-graders reading at grade level. Implementation, however, still has its problems, including full funding for the program and key program details that remain in flux.

20

EDUCATION GUIDE 2015-2016

PiedmontParent.com

What is Read to Achieve? The Read to Achieve law, enacted in July 2012 as part of the Excellent Public Schools Act, was designed to ensure that North Carolina students are reading at or above grade level by the end of the third grade. The law took effect for the 2013-14 school year. In the original legislation, if a student failed to achieve the set benchmark, that student was held back from advancing to fourth grade. Now, however, no third-grade student is retained based solely on Read to Achieve results, and there are many ways a thirdgrader can demonstrate reading proficiency, according to the law, including: • Score proficient on the Beginning of Grade test, which is taken at the start of third grade. • Score proficient on the End of Grade test, taken at the end of third grade. • Successfully complete a portfolio of reading assessments. • Retake the EOG test once, if he or she fails it the first time. • Successfully pass an authorized alternative test.

Challenges and Costs Whitney Oakley, executive director of Guilford County School’s K-5 curriculum, believes helping kids to be better readers is a good thing, but she is critical of Read to Achieve’s implementation and timing. Oakley believes third grade is too late to start a reading intervention. “Research shows that we should be intervening long before third grade, and retention doesn’t help anybody,” she says. “We should step in between kindergarten and first grade. We know that an early foundation in reading prepares students better for the rest of their education.” Chuck Nusinov, executive director for learning and teaching in CharlotteMecklenburg Schools, says he thinks the intent of the law “was spot-on,” but that there is a “disconnect” between Read to Achieve’s intent and implementation.

Oakley agrees. It is akin to an “unfunded mandate,” she says. “The size of the challenge is larger than the legislation. It is a state initiative that has presented some challenges with funding and with what we know research says about helping kids become better readers, and all of that has not been worked out in the best interests of kids.”

How the Law Helps Students A major part of the law included creation of summer reading camps to provide additional instruction in third-grade reading. In the summer of 2014, last-minute changes to the first camp caused confusion, when mandatory attendance was changed to voluntary, and a six-week program was cut to a minimum of three weeks. “The law allowed a system to offer a minimum of three weeks up to six weeks,” says Nusinov. CMS kept the six-week option for its reading camps. “We wanted to offer the most sustained program to allow students to engage in learning.” To make the camp student-friendly, CMS camps include field trips and incorporate music, dance, physical education and science, “We didn’t want students to feel like they were being punished,” Nusinov says. “It was all built around reading.” Oakley says in summer 2014, the Guilford County school system was able to serve both rising third- and fourth-grade students because of a personal donation. But because of budget constraints, only rising fourth-graders were served in summer 2015. Like other school districts in the state, Wake County also struggles with the changes to and cost of the program. The county is unique because it offers both traditional and year-round student calendars. Sherri Miller, director of the K-12 literacy academics department in WCPSS, says traditional calendar students who don’t pass the reading EOG are invited to attend a three-week reading camp during summer break. Year-round calendar students, however, are evaluated throughout the year. “For our students on the year-round

calendar, we had to start the reading camps before they had even taken the End of Grade test,” she says. “So we had a camp as early as March.”

Next-Step Support If students remain below grade level after the camps, and cannot advance through a different assessment or an exemption, they are either retained or put in a “threequarters” transitional classroom, where they receive enhanced instruction in reading while remaining at a fourth-grade level in other subjects. If the students can pass an assessment in late October or early November, the reading retention label is removed from their file. After attending a summer camp and being retested, CMS students who need more help can go into a transitional fourthgrade class, Nusinov says. “We follow an intensified reading model. We pull those children out of the transitional class for additional reading help. We can do this for an entire school year.” In Wake County, the reading classes in 2014 showed that more than 60 percent of students made gains, Miller says. Most of the students were placed in transitional classes, but students were not pulled out of those classes for reading. “Each student has 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction by a fourth-grade teacher,” she says. “The program has the public much more aware of reading performance at the third-grade level,” Oakley says. “Third grade now feels more like a gateway grade.” Despite the challenges of Read to Achieve, Nusinov sees the bright spots. “We had a girl who came into the reading camp who was reading at only a kindergarten level,” he says. “When she was tested at the end of the camp, she was reading at a second-grade, eight-month level. That makes it all worthwhile.” Anne Wooten Green is a freelance writer and editor based in Winston-Salem.

Home Schooling 5 REASONS TO TAKE THE PLUNGE BY URSULA VOGT

6 7 , 80 4

That’s the number North Carolina parents are buzzing about this fall. According to the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education, there were an estimated 67,804 of homeschool students in North Carolina in 2014-15. Nationally, that number is 2.2 million. Why does home-school draw so many traditional school families? We asked parents across North Carolina, including married couples, single parents, blended families, stay-at-home parents and working parents: “What made you take the plunge?” Customized Learning

every night, which cut into family time. “Home schooling really is a journey and it has touched every aspect of my life in one way or another,” she says. “It has brought new friendships to our lives, leadership roles, job opportunities and lifetime family memories that we wouldn’t have had otherwise.”

Gina Grothoff of Charlotte has a background in education. One of her top reasons for home schooling her two children was to enable them to learn “in their own timeline and their own style of learning. … You can change your methods along the way and modify as you go along to what works best for you and your family,” she says. “It also doesn’t have to look the same for every child, because each child has his own strengths, weaknesses and learning style.” For example, the parent of a child with dyslexia could modify his lesson by using manipulatives to teach math, rather than a workbook. “There are so many choices out there that it is mind boggling!” says Veronica Wright of Lexington, North Carolina. Wright, who also has a background in education, says she chose home-school because the traditional education setting required hours of homework

Flexibility Home-schoolers don’t have to follow a weekly, day-to-day bell schedule but, according to the North Carolina Division of Non-Public Education, they must still operate school “on a regular schedule, excluding reasonable holidays and vacations, during at least nine calendar months of the year.” The division also recommends that home-schools maintain at least five clock hours of instruction each school day. Many families take it a step further and home-school their children year-around, choosing vacation destinations that

|

double as learning experiences and extended field trips. In addition to enabling a flexible schedule, home schooling also removes limits on where classes can be held.

Values Brian D. Ray, president of the National Home Education Research Institute, has been studying the home-school movement for the past 30 years. He observes that by adulthood, home-school students are likely to internalize their parents’ values and beliefs at a high rate. Charlotte residents Richard and Gail Hawkins, who immigrated to the U.S. from Africa, want to pass their values and heritage to their children. They echo one of the primary reasons parents all over the country opt to home-school. “Choosing to educate our own children has helped us to define what really matters to us in all areas — faith, academics, career, relationships and more,” the couple wrote together in an email statement.

Real-life Experiences Families who choose to homeschool their children say it isn’t just an educational choice, it’s a lifestyle choice that includes the

entire family working together and sharing experiences, like volunteering or taking classes together. It’s also not a coincidence that many families who choose to take the plunge start their own businesses and have their kids work alongside them, like the Hawkins, who own nJoyScience, a home-school program offering science curricula for ages 6 and older.

Quality Time “The main reason I chose to home-school is because I missed my boys,” Wright says. “For me, there was so much I wanted to share with and teach my kids, but there just wasn’t enough time.” The unifying thread in all of the reasons these parents took the plunge is that they don’t want to miss out. At the end of a long day with hours of homework ahead, these parents are asking for more. More time, more connection and more experiences with their children. Ursula Vogt is a freelance writer who began home schooling in 2001. She and her husband, Mark, have four kids. They chose home-school when their son was diagnosed with autism.
