High Point Furniture Market

The Triad is in the central Piedmont of North Carolina and is made up of three cities — Greensboro, High Point and Winston-Salem — and many smaller surrounding communities spanning 12 counties. The Piedmont Triad has an estimated population of 1,600,054, making it the 30th-largest metropolitan area in the United States. The area is known for its mild climate, low cost of living, and distinguished colleges and universities.

Greensboro greensboro-nc.gov 373-2489 Population: 269,666 Greensboro is the largest city in the Piedmont Triad and the third-largest in the state. It is home to seven colleges and universities including University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T University. Greensboro has an active arts community with events and venues ranging from the nationally acclaimed Eastern Music Festival to the cutting-edge performances of Triad Stage. The city was also the site of the famous 1960 Civil Rights sit-in movement at the Woolworth’s lunch counter, which is now the International Civil Rights Center and Museum.

High Point high-point.net 883-8517 Population: 104, 371 Most of the city of High Point is in Guilford County, with portions spilling into neighboring Randolph, Davidson and Forsyth counties. High Point is internationally known for its twice-annual furniture market and referred to as the “Furniture Capital of the World.” Attractions

in High Point include the High Point Museum and Historical Park, the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, the Piedmont Environmental Center, and the World’s Largest Chest of Drawers as well as two colleges including High Point University.

Winston-Salem cityofws.org 727-8000 Population: 229,617 Winston-Salem is the fourth-largest city in the state and is often referred to as the “Twin City” for its dual heritage, as it was at one time two distinct towns — Salem, the Moravian community, and Winston, an industrial town known for textiles, tobacco and furniture. Old Salem historic district still showcases the culture of the Moravian settlement of the 18th and 19th centuries. Winston-Salem is home to the Winston-Salem Dash, a Class High A minor-league baseball team affiliated with the Chicago White Sox, and has a thriving arts community, playing host to the biennial National Black Theatre Festival and the annual RiverRun International Film Festival. The city is also home to seven colleges and universities including Wake Forest University and Salem College, the oldest women’s college in the U.S.

triad cities & communities And nearby … Asheboro ci.asheboro.nc.us 626-1201 Population: 25,012 Asheboro is in Randolph County and offers small-town living close enough to larger cities to have access to the amenities, but small enough to provide an escape from the hustle and bustle. Best known as the home of the North Carolina Zoological Park, Asheboro also hosts a semi-professional baseball team, the Copperheads, and includes several other attractions close by including The Richard Petty Museum, Uwharrie National Forest, the North Carolina Aviation Museum and Seagrove, which features more than 80 potteries.

Browns Summit

ci.burlington.nc.us 222-5000 Population: 49,963 Most of Burlington is in Alamance County, with a small portion in adjacent Guilford County. Popular destinations within Burlington and Alamance County include the Company Shops Depot, The Paramount Theatre, City Park, the 1937 Federal Building and Burlington Athletic Stadium at Fairchild Park, home to The Burlington Royals and a filming location for the movie “Bull Durham.” Elon University is also close by in the neighboring town of Elon.

Clemmons clemmons.org 766-7511 Population: 18,688 Once a distinct town outside Winston-Salem, Clemmons is fast becoming a suburb of its sprawling neighbor. Known in the county for its many charming farms and equestrian opportunities, Clemmons is also the site of Tanglewood Park where residents enjoy walking, riding, swimming, fishing and boating.

Jamestown jamestown-nc.us 454-1138 Population: 3,382 Founded in 1816, Jamestown is a small, relatively affluent town in Guilford County situated between Greensboro and High Point. Jamestown is the site of High Point City Lake Park, featuring a 340-acre lake and numerous attractions including playgrounds, a carousel, miniature train ride, excursion boat, miniature golf course, public swimming pool, amphitheater and historical buildings. The Historic Castle McCulloch Gold Mill and Guilford Technical Community College are also in Jamestown.

■ The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, in Winston-Salem, was the first public arts conservatory in the United States. ■ The Reynolds Building, built in 1929 in downtown Winston-Salem, was the prototype for the much larger Empire State Building, built in 1931 in New York City.

triad communities

Population: Less than 8,000 Browns Summit is a small community about 20 minutes outside of Greensboro. The community is fast growing in popularity, due in part to its proximity to Greensboro and Reidsville, but also due to its traditional, rural lifestyle and affordability. The single elementary school in town is part of the Guilford County school system, and the area is in the new, highly sought-after Northeast middle- and high-school district. The new Haw River State Park in Browns Summit includes the Summit Center, a conference and environmental center, and plans for further development of the park are still underway.

A Perfect Day in Winston-Salem No school. No work. Only family-friendly fun. By Jan Campbell Wharton

Cobblestone Farmer's Market

We’ll start with breakfast at Camino Bakery on 4th Street. The cozy tables and open play area in the back invite a leisurely pace. Everyone can choose among the multi-tiered display of muffins, scones and pastries, and we’ll order a couple of coffee drinks for Mom and Dad. The baristas at Camino create latte art in the foam topping of their espresso drinks. These pretty patterns remind me to notice little things that make life meaningful, and that is exactly how a day with kids should begin. A perfect day for me must also include my all-time favorite WinstonSalem activity: the Cobblestone Farmer’s Market. So, let’s imagine our day is a Tuesday between the months of April and October. After breakfast, to the market we will go. This all-local, producers-only market operates Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to

Winston-Salem is a great place to be a kid. We easily occupy our three young sons’ time with the city’s many kidfriendly institutions, parks and restaurants. The challenge is often choosing among all the good options. Not a bad problem to have. Just for fun, let’s imagine we have an entire day to make the most of what Winston-Salem has to offer. The kids are off from school. Mom and Dad are off from work. The only goals are to have fun and maybe learn something along the way.

1 p.m. in front of the Milton Rhodes Art Center and Saturdays from 9 a.m.noon in Old Salem. See, sample and buy locally grown produce, meats, eggs and hand-produced baked goods, cheeses and soaps. Talk to the people who grow and produce these things. The experience is both entertaining and educational. At past markets, our sons have held a newborn pig, seen mushrooms growing on a log, and watched a wool seller knit her yarn into a sock. And somehow my request to “just try one bite” to the kids goes down a bit easier after getting to know the farmer who

piedmontparent.com

raised the vegetable. When our marketing is done, we stop by Winston-Square Park beside the Rhodes Center to see the waterfall, Japanese garden display and wishing pool. We call it a wishing pool because my sons make less-than-secret wishes as they toss pennies into the water from the raised walkway that crosses overtop the fountain. Winston-Square Park will wet the boys’ appetite for park play and we always need to burn off energy, so we’ll head to Hanes Park next. Our first stop is the playground with its three-story tower of thrills.

Besides meeting the athletic interests of many with tennis courts, a track and baseball fields, Hanes Park features glorious open green space. Weather permitting, we’ll play in Peter’s Creek or fly a kite in the middle of the track field. Everyone will soon be hungry again, and it’s best to go early to my sons’ favorite lunch spot, Skippy’s Hotdogs. The crowd is big at lunch, but the dining room is small. The round tables in front accommodate families best and always go first, so we try to get there before noon. Skippy’s owner, Mike Rothman, began his business making soft pretzels. He later had the delicious idea to fill hotdog buns made from pretzel dough with all-beef wieners. Brilliant! The hand-cut fries are also the best in town, and they offer a veggie dog or turkey Philly for the hot-dog averse. We never have to beg our

children to finish eating at Skippy’s. After lunch, we head to SciWorks. This museum’s indoor and outdoor exhibits appeal to a variety of ages and interests. Our sons, ages 8, 5 and 2, enjoy spending time here. Some of our favorite

spots include the PhysicsWorks area, where displays demonstrate principles of motion, forces and simple machines. We also love the North Carolina Mountains to Sea area, which explores the geological and biological diversity of our state. The SoundWorks area, devoted to the science of sound, is also a favorite. Our music-loving sons don’t miss the opportunity to run, skip and hop a tune across the giant piano keys on the floor. When we’ve had enough of being inside, we go outside to the 15-acre Environmental Park. Outdoor exhibits in this park include the white-tailed deer, river otters and native plants of the North Carolina wild, and the domestic animals and plants of the state’s farms. The farmyard area engages all of the senses — from the feel of a soft lamb to the sound of the cow’s moos. After leaving SciWorks, our sons

Reynolda House Museum of American Art would surely clamor for a snack, and they love no snack more than ice cream. Winston-Salem has many good ice cream and gelato joints, and we love them all, but coming from SciWorks, we’ll drive the short distance to the Cook Out at Summit Point for a milkshake before heading to Reynolda Village where we would enjoy them on the lawn in front of Reynolda House. We then burn off delicious calories and sugar energy from the shakes with walk though Reynolda Gardens or along the wooded paths behind the house. Our sons will insist that we spend time in the caves, which is what they call the hollows between the massive magnolia trees on the property. And if after a while (a long while) we found ourselves hungry again, we’ll head over to Village Tavern) in Reynolda Village for dinner. sauce or grilled salmon as well as the usual kids’ fare, grilled cheese and chicken tenders. We parents know, of course, that no day is perfect. The weather may refuse to cooperate or even more likely, the kids will do so. But the great thing about living in Winston-Salem is that most everything is close and reasonably priced, and changing well-made plans mid-course bailing all together is usually no big deal. Parenting is all about adapting. Truth be told, outside of Disneyworld and Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, the perfect place to be a kid may not exist. But Winston-Salem has a lot of offer that real families can afford in money and time. In today’s world, it’s hard to get more perfect than that. A Perfect Day in Greensboro Kids out of school? Find family-friendly fun in Guilford County’s largest city. By Ginny Gaylor Photos courtesy of Greensboro Area Convention & Visitors Bureau

Is it a constant struggle to find fun, maybe even educational, things to do to keep the kids occupied on weekends or when school is out? Well, it doesn’t have to be that way. Greensboro has a lot of offer families with activities for leisure, learning and exploration, and more. I’ve compiled three “perfect day” itineraries for you and your kids. Tackle an entire itinerary in one day or pick and choose from each day’s options to craft something that you and your children will enjoy.

1

Discover downtown

Downtown Greensboro is chock-oblock full of family fun. Start off with a light breakfast at Loaf and enjoy whatever delicious quiche or focaccia they’ve created that morning, or opt for a more traditional scone or danish. Interested in something a bit more substantial? Smith St. Diner knows how to deliver a hearty meal. With biscuits that are bigger than your head and a fantastic cup of hot chocolate sure to impress any kid, Smith St. serves up authentic countrystyle cooking. Now that you are fueled up to face the day, head to the Greesboro Children's Museum, a fantastic place for kids of all ages to explore. Hands-on exhibits give kids the chance to explore a construction site, a theater, a grocery store and a post office among many others. Throw in fire trucks and planes that they can climb in and The Edible

10

Greensboro Children’s Museum Schoolyard and don’t be surprised if your kids want to stay the whole day. If you are downtown on a Wednesday, head across the street from the Children’s Museum to the Central Library for their interactive story time. Your toddler or preschooler will delight in the hand rhymes and felt-board stories. Summer themes include subway travel and underground bugs. After all the indoor fun, consider heading to Center City Park for a picnic. From the broad lawn to a variety of shaded areas, the public space welcomes all to enjoy the fountains, artwork and other interpretative elements that repre-

sent aspects of Greensboro’s history. With the afternoon ahead of you, it’s time for you and the family to discover your inner artist at ArtQuest. The hands-on studio welcomes kids of all ages to weave, draw, make a quilt, paint, work with clay or put on a puppet show. Each exhibit was designed by North Carolina artists. Should you be exploring downtown on a Friday and your day heads into evening, take advantage of Food Truck Fridays in front of the Children’s Museum from 5 to 8 p.m. There is also free music in Center City Park on Friday nights from 7 to 10 p.m.

■ Greensboro was spelled Greensborough prior to 1895. ■ Greensboro’s most famous native son is William Sydney Porter, known to the world as the short story writer O. Henry.

Outdoor odyssey

Another gorgeous summer day, with bright, clear skies! You want to take advantage of all that the beauty and explore the outdoors with your kids. Greensboro has some great options for connecting with nature. Begin with a healthy breakfast from Whole Foods Market on West Friendly Ave. The kids will love picking and choosing from the food bar, and you will feel great knowing that many of the ingredients are local and none of the choices include artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, preservatives or trans fats. Afterwards, head to the Greensboro Science Center. Steffany Reeve, the marketing manager for the 3-in-1 attraction, is especially excited about their latest endeavor, the SciQuarium, which opened June 29. “It’s the first

inland aquarium in the state,” she says. “One of the things that makes this aquarium unique, and why we’re calling it a SciQuarium, is because it blends science and an aquarium.” The SciPod exhibits use interactive iPads to teach visitors about science and how it relates back to animals and their habitats. The SciQuarium will also have the only permanent exhibit of African warm weather penguins in the state. And don’t forget about the Greensboro Science Center’s other great attractions, including the museum, the Animal Discovery Zoo and the OmniSphere Theater. After a morning of learning about nature, it’s time to refuel with a picnic at Country Park located next to the Greensboro Science Center. With eight picnic shelters you

Looking for a way to get out of the house for the day with the kids, but you want some activities that are a little more low-key? Start with a plate of pancakes at Tex & Shirley’s Restaurant. The original location has been serving up a variety of pancake options for more than 40 years. Tuesdays and Wednesdays (summer 2013), the Regal Greensboro Grande Stadium is offering $1 kid-friendly movies in its Summer Movie Express. A portion of the proceeds from the special showings benefit the Will Rogers Institute and all are rated G or PG. If the kids didn’t fill up on popcorn, you can always go to another Greensboro institution, Jay’s Deli for lunch. Open since the 1940s, this classic choice offers a range of deli sandwiches and even handdipped milkshakes. Give the kids a chance to let off a little steam at Safari Nation. Their jungle of massive inflatables includes Greensboro’s only Ballocity Interactive BallPlay, a play system that features multi-level platforms with blasters, vacuum cannons and

However you want to spend your perfect summer day in Greensboro, these ideas will give you plenty of options to learn, play and enjoy the precious days of vacation you have with your children. Re-discover your inner child and see where the summer sun takes you. Ginny Gaylor is a freelance writer and editor based in Greensboro and mom of one. For more information, visit ginny gaylor.com.

North Carolina Zoo 4401 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro nczoo.org The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is home to about 1,600 animals and located on more than 2,000 acres. The zoo was one of the first in the U.S. to be built from its inception as a “natural habitat” zoo. An interesting fact: The plains exhibit alone is 38 acres larger than the entire National Zoo in Washington, D.C. Tom Gillespie, N.C. Zoo public affairs specialist, says their goal is to educate as well as entertain. “We try to teach people about animals, why they might be endangered and even about certain products they should or shouldn’t buy that might make a difference for the animals.” The N.C. Zoo often hosts special exhibits such as the Dinosaur exhibit (through Oct. 2013) with life-sized dinosaurs that are computerized with movement and sound. The N.C. Zoo also hosts many family-friendly events, camps and overnight experiences for kids.

With activities and special events throughout the year, kids can learn about the work that went into producing food, why the animals are on the farm and how they were used.

The Conservators’ Center Photo courtesy of Chariot Creative

The Conservators’ Center Intersection of Huffines and E. Hughes Mill roads, Mebane bewildernc.org Talk to just about anyone who has ever visited the Conservators’ Center in rural Caswell County, and they’ll tell you their experience was unforgettable. The Conservators’ Center was co-founded in 1999 by Douglas Evans and Mindy Stinner, who had both worked extensively with exotic animals before opening the center. Their goal was to do some conservation breeding of a few obscure species that they felt were important to their ecosystems. Because of their experience, word quickly spread and they found themselves taking in more and more rescued animals until they had grown to the size they are today — with about 100 animals, representing 19 different species. Some of these species include tigers, lions and leopards, as well as wolves, lemurs, red foxes, binturongs and New Guinea singing dogs.

In 2007, the Conservators’ Center opened its doors to the public, which has become their main source of financial support. Tours are arranged on weekends by appointment only throughout the year (be sure to check their website to learn about “Wild Overnights”). There are several unique events including the post-holiday tree toss (the animals go wild over the smell of pine!), the family-friendly “Howl-o-Ween” tours and Pumpkin Prowl in October.

All-a-Flutter Butterfly Farm 7850-B Clinard Farms Road, High Point all-a-flutter.com All-a-Flutter Butterfly Farm is the state’s first and only fully operating butterfly farm. A visit to the farm starts with a family-friendly presentation and interactive skit where kids can dress up and learn about the body parts of the butterfly, its lifecycle, the Monarch migration, the differences between moths and butterflies and what caterpillars eat. Afterward, everyone is given a sugar pad and given the opportunity to step inside a butterfly enclosure to see the butterflies, eggs, caterpillars and chrysalis.

SciWorks

An outdoor raccoon exhibit is expected to open in the summer of 2013.

400 W. Hanes Mill Road, Winston-Salem sciworks.org

Greensboro Science Center

SciWorks takes a hands-on approach to teach children about animals and conservation. Many of the wild animals have been rescued and are non-releasable, which gives children a chance to see some of these animals up close such as with the “Animal Encounters” program (11:30 a.m., daily). “When people can get up close to an animal and even touch it, they gain a better understanding and appreciation for that animal. Learning to appreciate the value of something is the first step towards conservation,” says Kelli Isenhour, SciWorks’ vice president of education and programs. There are many animal programs available to school groups that correlate to the N.C. Science Essential Standards and are grade appropriate that teach children about vertebrate and invertebrate animals, barnyard animals, native animals and conservation efforts. SciWorks also offers animal-themed events, camps, birthday parties and events such as a bat house building workshop and butterfly release, and a chance to “adopt-an-animal.”

4301 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro greensboroscience.org The Greensboro Science Center is a budding young scientist’s dream with an expansive Animal Discovery zoo; aquatics, reptile, mineral and insect labs; a herpetarium; and an Omnisphere Theater that shows immersive science programs. And with the addition of the new Carolina SciQuarium in June 2013, the Greensboro Science Center is the only North Carolina location that offers a worldclass aquarium, a hands-on science museum and an accredited zoological park all in one location. “We are proud to be able to offer visitors the chance to see and experience up-close encounters with some of the most unique animals in the world right here in Greensboro. From twin tigers, rare Javan gibbons and a red panda to the amazing penguins, sharks, stingrays, otters and fishing cats at the Carolina SciQuarium, the Greensboro Science Center is one of the best places in North Carolina to see animals,” says Steffany Reeve, the marketing manager. There are plenty of opportunities to learn about the animals with keeper talks and public feedings daily, as well as camps and special events throughout the year. Shannon Koontz is Piedmont Parent’s web editor. Read her Daily Post blog at piedmont parent.com for parenting news and ideas for family-friendly fun in the Triad.

wsfcs.k12.nc.us Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Administrative Offices 475 Corporate Square Drive Winston-Salem 727-2816 Superintendent: Dr. Beverly Emory Forsyth County has the fifth-largest system in North Carolina and the 83rd-largest in the nation. What makes the school system unique is that parents have a say in where their children go to school. Elementary and middle schools are divided into zones, and families can choose from among the schools in their residential schools each spring during the Schools of Choice process. Parents can choose from their neighborhood schools, another school in their zones or from 15 magnet programs (two magnet schools are by random drawing). High-school students can earn college credit in more than 30 Advanced Placement courses, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and courses at local colleges and universities. The school system has 42 elementary schools, 15 middle schools and 11 high schools. Twelve special schools bring the system-wide total to 80 and serving about 52,400 students. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools offers 16 magnet schools in grades K-12. Each magnet school offers a challenging curriculum and the support that students need to expand their horizons. Students have the opportunity to continue in a magnet program from kindergarten through grade 12.

charter schools Charter schools provide parents a choice in the education of their children — and it is a public choice. Charter schools are tuition free; funding comes from federal, state and local taxes. Charter schools are governed by either a board of parents and community members or a private educational-services firm. The schools have open enrollment with no discrimination, no religious associations and no tuition. To enroll in a charter school, parents must contact each individual school to see if they have openings. If they have more applicants than available slots, an open lottery must be instituted to fill the remaining spots. Charter schools have several flexible opportunities in their day-to-day operations that do not exist with traditional schools; for example, hire non-certified teachers, hire teaching personnel on at-will contracts and negotiate personnel salaries. The state requires 75 percent of charter school teachers in elementary school to be certified while 50 percent in middle and high school must be certified. However, charter school teachers must follow NCLB requirements for highly qualified staff. All charter schools are required to take the state mandated tests. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Charter School Office oversees charter schools across the state. For more information: North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
