A message from your
Director
By the time this activity guide lands in your mailbox, my transition from Recreation Director to City Administrator will be old news. I write this note on my final day at PRD and find myself reflecting on these past five years. My time at PRD has been both challenging and invigorating. I am continuously impressed by the skills, talents and commitment that PRD Staff bring every day to the Recreation Department and ultimately to the community we serve. I have developed deep respect for the work and the people of PRD as well as for the people of Piedmont. Longtime Recreation Supervisor, Erin Rivera will take on the role of Interim Recreation Director until a permanent replacement is hired. Erin brings tremendous experience and wisdom gained over her 25 years at PRD, and I am grateful for Erin’s willingness and enthusiasm to take on this leadership role. Knowing the department is in good hands with Erin and the entire PRD team makes leaving a little easier. As Summer ’19 comes to a close, I highlight the successful launch of CAMP EVERYTHING. Thanks to the vision and efforts of Erin Rivera, Katrina Morris, and Amanda Tehaney, PRD created a new full day camp which filled newly renovated Hampton Park with a fun enthusiastic staff, lots of kids, and endless smiles. We expect to expand and improve upon this year’s four-week pilot program to an even bigger and better CAMP EVERYTHING next summer. PRD is excited to offer a wide range of programs this fall. We work closely with Piedmont Middle School to provide diverse enrichment opportunities including interscholastic athletics, recreational sports, debate, arts, and healthy relationships. Mid-day and afternoon enrichment activities for preschool aged children have also been expanded, and the Piedmont Community Pool offers swim lessons through mid-November. The Harvest Festival will take place on September 22. Don’t miss this unique Piedmont tradition including homegrown edibles, scarecrows, carnival games, music, art ,and the popular cake walk.

Kids Carpentry Since 1982, Kids' Carpentry has taught thousands of boys and girls the joys of working with real tools and wood. The safe use of hand tools is emphasized while kids work together on trucks, bird feeders, doll furniture, airplanes and other items. In addition to the fun, kids gain experience in measuring and applied mathematics. By visualizing, planning, and building projects, children develop abstract reasoning capabilities and fine motor skills. Children can select from a wide range of project choices supplied by the instructor but are encouraged to design and build based on their own needs and imaginations. Carpentry classes are taught with one teacher for every 8 students, ensuring careful attention and respect for each child. R $165 • NR $185

How to Talk to Kids About Sex, Sexual Ethics, and Decision-Making (Adult Class)
Contrary to popular belief, talking to kids about sex and sexuality does not pierce their innocence or encourage them to have sex at an early age. Studies show that engaging kids in ongoing age-appropriate conversations about sex, healthy relationships, and decision-making results in later sexual debuts and less indulgence in risky behavior. In this ongoing monthly class, we address— and move past—the barriers that prevent parents from engaging in conversations with their kids about intimacy. Parents learn how to talk to their kids in age-appropriate ways about about essential topics including consent, bodily autonomy, sexual ethics, gender, pornography, digital ethics, gender identity/sexual orientation, decision making, safety, pleasure, healthy/unhealthy relationships and more. Parents (with children of any age) will leave these classes with concrete language, tools, and strategies to open the lines of communication about one of the most important arenas of a child’s life and future—and keep those lines open. Healthy Friendships / Healthy Relationships 5TH GRADE CO-ED
7TH GRADE CO-ED
In this two-part class, students learn key concepts that will help lay the foundation for their understanding of gender, ethics, bodily autonomy, consent, compassionate communication, resilience, and more. By participating in an ongoing conversation about what constitutes healthy/unhealthy behavior (in both friendships and relationships), students can begin to co-create new social norms that will help prepare them for the future.
In this series, we address the importance of bodily autonomy, consent, agency, gender role training, and self-determination in friendships and relationships. But we will also move beyond theory to practice, so that students have an opportunity to cultivate resilience and emotional intelligence by practicing the art of communication—whether that’s reading verbal and nonverbal cues or expressing preferences and boundaries. In this interactive, fun, and vital workshop, students break down barriers between self and others in order to step into direct and honest communication.

6TH GRADE CO-ED
10/13, 11/3, 12/8
In the 6th grade, students are beginning to form ideas about the social differences they're encounter at school, in their communities, and online—whether those differences have to do with gender, race, class, or identity. But without a solid understanding of gender role training, anti-racism, and media literacy, it’s not easy to see one’s own blind spots—or the blind spots of others. In this popular (and foundational) three-part workshop, students gain an understanding of sexism, racism and other forms of oppression in order to help them make choices that respect their own dignity as well as the dignity of others.

Youth/Teen For the Love of Basketball
After School Ultimate Frisbee
For the love of Basketball encourages young women to learn and play basketball in a positive and healthy environment, specifically they learn life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and self-confidence. There are twice as many girls compared to boys who drop out of sports by the age of 14 (Women’s Sports Foundation), which can be attributed to societal barriers that are primarily faced by young women.
Learn to play one of the fastest growing sports in the world: Ultimate Frisbee (aka Ultimate)! It combines some of the most exciting elements of basketball, soccer, and non-contact football. Ultimate is not just another sport, as it places equal focus on the three pillars of fostering character, community, and competition, and provides a healthy, positive, physical and social outlet for all. Each session consists of personalized one-on-one instruction, drills, and supervised scrimmages, while also cultivating opportunities for kids to make new friends and have fun. Our professional coaching staff emphasize social-emotional skills development while teaching youth to play to their highest potential with a philosophy focusing on Safety, FUNdamentals, and Spirit of the Game!
