FIRST STEP (18 MOS–2 1/2 YEARS) First Step provides an environment for children to explore and interact with others through playful activities, art and movement. Daily activities are the foundations used to develop self-direction and interaction with others. Music is woven into all facets of First Step and a strong emphasis is placed on the sharing, taking turns, “please” and “thank you”, and respecting personal space.
TIDDLYWINKS (2–3 YEARS) Tiddlywinks provides children with the opportunity to develop independence, self-help, and social skills while they experiment with materials and develop friendships in a relaxed atmosphere. The curriculum is play-based and teachable moments are utilized throughout the days.
PLAYSCHOOL (3–5 YEARS) Playschool emphasizes socialization and individual creativity. Daily activities include art, cooking, circle time, games, reading stories, and an outdoor play period. Academic subjects are taught through games and play. Children must be toilet trained and bring their own snack and lunch each day.
PRE-K (4 1/2 –5 YEARS) Designed to meet the learning needs of children in their final year of Preschool, Pre-K curriculum components include early literacy, number awareness, science, art, and social-emotional development. Each day children will participate in “circle time”, providing a wonderful opportunity for children to build community through stories, songs and sharing. Children learn to be attentive to others while being both a participant and audience member and will develop the skills needed for their journey to Kindergarten and beyond!
TOT ZONE (2–4 YEARS) Tot Zone is a flexible play-based preschool program that offers a consistent daily schedule of fun and diverse activities, such as arts & crafts, science experiments, movement activities, outdoor time, and circle time filled with songs, games and stories. Tot Zone is a fun and safe place to begin or extend your child's preschool experience. Children do NOT need to be potty trained. Ongoing Registration (email totzoneprd@gmail.com for details).

A message from your
Director
As summer ‘16 comes to a close and another school year begins, PRD is excited to offer a wide range of fall programs. We are working closely with Piedmont Middle School to provide diverse after school enrichment opportunities, expanding afternoon enrichment activities for pre-school aged children, and the Piedmont Community Pool will offer swim lessons through mid November. Schoolmates is always a COOL place to be, and Havens will be even cooler this fall with the long overdue installation of air conditioning! Together with the Department of Public Works, we have been addressing deferred maintenance issues in our parks and buildings that will certainly enhance recreation programs in Piedmont. Hampton Park is undergoing significant renovations that will result in improved basketball, tennis, and field facilities and is scheduled to re-open early 2017. After a major overhaul in May and June, the lower level of Community Hall has re-opened with new floors, new paint, new closets, and a new attitude. Playground equipment has been evaluated and plans are developing to ensure that our City play spaces are safe, fun and accessible. This fall the Harvest Festival will expand to include a FULL weekend of activities beginning on Friday 9/23 with Movie in the Park, followed by the Fall FEST 5K on Saturday, 9/24 and culminating with the traditional Harvest Festival on Sunday 9/25. To get us all ready for Halloween, the Piedmont Community Pool will host its annual pool pumpkin patch on October 15th and the Piedmont Recreation Department building will once again transform itself in to the Haunted House for three spooky nights: October 26, 27, 28.

Creative Arts Class
Since 1982, Kids' Carpentry has taught thousands of boys and girls, kindergarten through the fifth grade, the joys of working with real tools and wood. The safe use of hand tools is emphasized while kids work together on trucks, bird feeders, doll furniture, airplanes, and other items. The kids gain experience in measuring, and applied mathematics. By visualizing, planning, and building projects, children develop abstract reasoning capabilities and fine motor skills. The children can select from a wide range of project choices but are also encouraged to design and build based on their own needs and imaginations. Class size is limited to one teacher to every eight students, ensuring careful attention and respect for each child. kidscarpentry.net for more info!

Personal Finance & Investment
Middle school is an excellent time to learn about money management to create a foundation for students to become financially independent in their lives later. Since there are no courses about financial literacy in our K-12 curriculum, students must seek supplemental education like this one. We teach how to spend and save wisely, how to apply strategies to monitor income and expenses, and how to plan to spend or save. The class has fun hands-on projects teaching students’ comparison shopping, how to create a budget, and understand the influence of advertising on spending habits. www.guruseducation.com
The goal of this class is to build financially responsible and smart youth. There are no courses about financial literacy in our K-12 curriculum. This course is ideal to sow seeds in raising a financially responsible youth who understands the value of saving wisely and teaches the different types of vehicles in which they can invest their money to grow. They learn the risks and returns involved in each type of investments and understand the strategies to use before selecting any method. Is CD better for you or is the Stock Market the way to go?

Kick & Play
Soccer Shots Mini
Kick & Play is a parent-child pre-soccer and movement program designed for toddlers. Our experienced instructors along with our puppet friends, Mimi & Pepe, take your little one and you through a world of physical activity. Individual attention, positive reinforcement, and engaging original music help to develop pre-soccer skills that will have your toddler learning to balance, run, kick and play – all while having a blast!
Soccer Shots Mini is a high-energy program introducing children to fundamental soccer principles, such as using your feet, dribbling, and basic rules of the game. Through games, songs, and positive reinforcement, children enjoy soccer and being active.
