A message from your

Director

As the Recreation Department prepares for another fun filled summer, we once again offer a wide array of summer programs – aquatics, day camps, sports, arts, science and more with the goal of providing something fun for everyone. We also pride ourselves in our teen employment programs that provide training and opportunities for volunteer and paid recreation jobs. I am particularly excited to highlight Camp Hampton, Schoolmates Summerfest 17, and Highlander Sports Camps. Camp Hampton Join the fun in this full active day camp where campers choose from a variety of activities at our newly renovated Hampton Park. Campers will arrive to “the Hamptons” and be greeted by an enthusiastic staff ready to present the days offerings of opportunities. Camp Hampton is an opportunity for campers to make their own activity decisions, and feel a sense of ownership and excitement over how they spend their day. It is our intention to provide a program where the “freedoms” of summer can be explored within the confines of a safe and supportive camp atmosphere. Schoolmates: Summerfest 17 PRD Schoolmates staff presents Summerfest 17 with fun weekly themes that incorporate arts and crafts, outdoor sports, schoolyard games, cooking, environmental enrichment, swimming and more. Summerfest 17 accommodates flexible schedules and is designed to meet the needs of all. Whether you need an hour, a single day or partial days of care here and there or an entire summer of full day play, PRD Schoolmates staff are ready to engage your child in “The Ultimate Playdate.” Highlander Sports Camps PRD and PHS Athletics are excited to join forces to present an array of sports camps directed by PHS varsity coaches and student-athletes. Campers have the opportunity to learn from Highlanders players and coaches in badminton, basketball, football, lacrosse, softball, tennis, and water polo.

Summer Opportunities Every Superhero has a Sidekick! Summer Sidekicks matches special needs campers with a high school volunteer! Here’s how it works: • A Summer Sidekick is available for up to two weeks for half day programs. • Contact Rec. Dept. for a list of camps that supports Sidekicks. • Once you know what you want, register! When registering, let it be known that you will need accommodation. • Once registered, email prdinclusion@ci.piedmont.ca.us for an accommodation form. This form tells the inclusion team and instructor how best to work with the camper. Return it by Friday, May 5. Forms received after the deadline will only be considered on a case by case basis.

Junior Counselor in Training Program (Jr. CIT.)

Students entering 6th-9th grades are invited to apply for the position of Junior Counselor in Training (Jr. CIT). Jr. CIT’s are summer volunteers who assist camp staff in the supervision of campers, set-up and take-down of activities, or assist the Piedmont Community Pool as swim lesson aides during swim camps and lessons. We are looking for youth who are enthusiastic, reliable, and enjoy working with children ages 3-10. Space is limited. Those students who demonstrate commitment and an understanding of work ethic and responsibility will likely be chosen. REQUIREMENTS:

• Sidekicks are teenagers from local high schools. Teens attend a training workshop and must meet with their assigned Superhero and family for approval and familiarization.

• Jr. CIT is required to pick up an application at the Recreation office, complete it, and return it to the office.

• In the summer, we require a 15-day notification of your accommodation request. This policy is extremely important. More people utilize our services during this time of the year. Staffing and availability of Summer Sidekicks can be limited. To provide the best services possible, we need the maximum amount of time to match up our Summer Sidekicks with your child and schedule them. If it's less than 5 days, we will do our best in accommodating the participant. The level of service that can be provided may be limited.

• Applications are available March 6 and must be returned by April 7.

PERSONAL CARE POLICY If a participant has a disability and requires assistance with personal care, participants are encouraged to bring their own personal assistant to the activity. For more information, email prdinclusion@ci.piedmont.ca.us.

SAVE TIME On Registration Day: Create Your Summer WISH LIST Today! Looking to register your child this summer? Get organized and save time by starting a Wish List! CREATING A WISH LIST IS EASY AT: activenet.active.com/piedmontrecreation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Create an account and/or log on: Click on Desired Summer Programs. Save to Your WISH LIST. Share your Summer Plans with Friends. On Registration Day: Simply Click on Your WISH LIST. Register and Click DONE!

• Applications completed by parents will not be accepted.

• We conduct an interview with all Jr. CIT applicants. • Jr. CIT’s are required to attend a staff training. • Jr. CIT must commit to work at least two weeks or more during the summer. Weeks do not need to be consecutive. • A fee is charged for each Jr. CIT upon acceptance. • Returning Jr. CIT's must reapply. R $185 • NR $210 For more information, email Erin Rivera erivera@ci.piedmont.ca.us

PRESCHOOL

Summer Camps Summer Tiddlywinks

Summer Fun School

We learn through PLAY: Children have the opportunity to develop independence, self help, and social skills while they experiment with materials and develop friendships in a relaxed atmosphere. The curriculum is play-based, and as children explore art, science, singing, dancing, circle time and outdoor play/discovery time, teachable moments are instilled throughout the days. Enrollment for Tiddlywinks 2017/18 is a separate registration process.

The program follows a rhythm that is similar to our school year. Each session offers developmentally appropriate curriculum that encourages a child’s physical, social-emotional, language, and cognitive development. While your child explores our environment and engages in projects, they flex their early literacy and math muscles, investigate and discover through science and art while having fun! Children also experience music, movement, cooking, outside large motor play, and circle time. Children must be toilet trained.

Camp Hampton PIEDMONT RECREATION

NEW

No more having to settle for just one kind of camp this summer. Come to Camp Hampton where we do it all! Campers will arrive to “the Hamptons” and be greeted by an enthusiastic staff ready to present the days offerings of opportunities. The way each camper’s day goes is all of their OWN CHOOSING. We aim to fuse camp “classics” with some new and inventive additions to the typical summer program. Friends can participate in the same activities and get to spend the entire day together and those who are on their own will have the chance to meet new friends who share similar interests. Campers will spend their time doing their selection of in depth, enriching and fun activities. Our goal is to have as much variety as possible so that all campers will find something they love to do and might even try something new. Camp Hampton is an opportunity for campers to make their own activity decisions, and feel a sense of ownership and excitement over how they spend their day. It is our intention to provide a program where the “freedoms” of summer can be explored within the confines of a safe and supportive camp atmosphere. See you there!

Academic Athletic Boot Camps

Freshi Media App Design class is a fun and exciting introduction for students who want to learn different aspects of computer based App Design. Utilizing Multimedia Fusion 2 software, students work closely with instructors to create individual computer based apps. Students complete one app project, which combines fun game based apps and practical utility apps into their final project.

Be ready for the 2017-18 school year! Reading, writing, problem solving, and math skill building are alternated with athletic activities to prepare incoming second, third, fourth, and fifth graders. All curriculum used will be aligned with Common Core Standards. Students will be given optional homework, needed literature and academic materials. Parents are given an opportunity to share their child’s needs prior to the camp’s introduction so curriculum can be individualized. Students use the athletic activities and games to guide academic projects. Think calculating averages, graphing, and sport related literature. Campers receive one-on-one and small group instruction.

We will also address safety, modifications for your unique needs, and the use of props. Each week’s practice will have a focus: spine, hips, neck and shoulders, and balance. You will receive a handout with a 20 min yoga session each week that you can follow at home or just pick some poses from.
