summer sidekicks Every Superhero has a Sidekick
Here’s how it works: • Please contact the Recreation Department for a list of camps that can support the Summer Sidekicks program. • Once you know what you want to do, the next step is to register. When registering, let it be known that you will need accommodation. • Once registered, email Kristen Brett (kbrett@ci.piedmont.ca.us) Coordinator of Inclusive Recreation, for an accommodation form. This form tells the inclusion team and instructor how best to work with the camper. Please fill this out and return it by Friday, May 13. Forms received after the deadline will only be considered on a case by case basis. • Once the form is returned, we will work to find the best Sidekick for your Superhero. • Sidekicks are teenagers from local high schools. Teens must fill out the necessary application and participate in an interview and are required to attend a training workshop conducted by Recreation staff. The Sidekick will then meet with their assigned Superhero and his/her family in order to familiarize themselves with the camper. • In the summer, we require a 15-day notification of your accommodation request. This policy is extremely important. More people utilize our services during this time of the year. Staffing and availability of Summer Sidekicks can be limited. To provide the best services possible, we need the maximum amount of time to match up our Summer Sidekicks with your child and schedule them. If it's less than 5 days, we will do our best in accommodating the participant. The level of service that can be provided may be limited. • A Summer Sidekick is available for up to two weeks. PERSONAL CARE POLICY: If a participant has a disability and requires assistance with personal care, participants are encouraged to bring their own personal assistant to the activity. For more information, contact Kristen Brett, Coordinator of Inclusive Recreation, 510-420-3074.
