A message from your

Director

As the Recreation Department prepares for another fun filled summer, we are once again offering a wide array of summer programs – aquatics, day camps, sports, arts, science and more - with the goal of providing something fun for everyone. We also pride ourselves in our teen employment programs that provide training and opportunities for volunteer and paid recreation jobs. I am particularly excited to highlight some new offerings including Scuba, Junior Picassos, and Cre8tive Design. SCUBA: Blue Endeavors has joined Piedmont Community Pool this summer with a range of underwater experiences from an Aquanauts introduction to Open Water Certification. CRE8TIVE DESIGN: Katrina Morris will turn your style vision into reality with Cre8tive Design. This DIY adventure will have you creating, sketching, designing, and sewing your way through Fashionable Fundays. JUNIOR PICASSOS: Join David Hopkins on an outdoor art adventure where students will draw, paint, and sculpt in the beauty of the East Bay Regional Parks. SUMMER SCHOOLMATES: Sarah Normart and PRD Schoolmates staff present Summerfest 18 with fun weekly themes that incorporate arts and crafts, outdoor sports, schoolyard games, cooking, environmental enrichment, swimming, and more. Summerfest 18 accommodates flexible schedules and is designed to meet the needs of all. Whether you need an hour, a single day or partial days of care here and there or an entire summer of full day play, PRD Schoolmates staff are ready to engage your child in “The Ultimate Playdate.” I am also excited to introduce to the community three new full-time additions to our PRD team.

Summer Camps

Summer Tiddlywinks

Summer Fun School

We learn through PLAY: Children have the opportunity to develop independence, self help, and social skills while they experiment with materials and develop friendships in a relaxed atmosphere. The curriculum is play-based, and as children explore art, science, singing, dancing, circle time and outdoor play/discovery time, teachable moments are instilled throughout the days. Enrollment for Tiddlywinks 2018/19 is a separate registration process.

We follow a rhythm similar to our school year. Each session offers developmentally appropriate curriculum that encourages a child’s physical, social-emotional, language, and cognitive development. While your child explores our environment and engages in projects, they flex their early literacy and math muscles, investigate and discover through science and art while having fun! Children also experience music, movement, cooking, outside play, and circle time. Children must be toilet trained.

Cooking, Crafts & Story

Clay & Kung Fu

Each day campers create a delicious snack linked to a story and craft, based on the principal that children eat what they create. We start off with a story adventure that paves the way to snack creation, and finishes up with a crafty craft. Each child receives a recipe book from the class creations. Campers learn kitchen and food safety, proper use of utensils, cooking, and clean up.

We start the day with 1½ hours of martial arts practice: a brief meditation and move to warm up and non-competitive martial arts. Kajukenbo is made up of Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, Chinese Boxing and Kenpo. Campers learn basic techniques, self defense and a short form. We create obstacle courses and camper will be able to break a board with a hand or foot by the last day!

Kids’ Carpentry

Looking for a camp that uses your creative talents to develop a scrapbook? Want to learn to use a variety of scrapbooking techniques while using lots of different materials? Are you excited to use the Cricut machine to cut any shape you want to add to your scrapbook? This is the camp for you! We complete a scrapbook in one week. All you need to bring is your photos and we provide the materials! Bring photos for: Winter, Valentines Day/Friendship, Spring/Easter, Summer, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hanukkah, Pets, and Birthday. Bring snack each day.

Since 1982, Kids’ Carpentry has taught thousands of boys and girls, the joys of working with real tools and wood. The safe use of hand tools is emphasized while kids work together on trucks, bird feeders, doll furniture, airplanes, and other items. In addition to the fun, the kids gain experience in measuring, and applied mathematics. By visualizing, planning, and building projects, children develop abstract reasoning capabilities, and fine motor skills. The children can select from a wide range of project choices but are also encouraged to design and build based on their own needs and imaginations. Carpentry classes are taught with one teacher for every eight students, ensuring careful attention and respect for each child. Class size is limited. kidscarpentry.net for more info!

Youth Camp Hampton PIEDMONT RECREATION

Meet Animals! Do Science Experiments! Get Out & Get Dirty Everyday!

No more having to settle for just one kind of camp this summer. Come to Camp Hampton where we do it all! We aim to fuse camp “classics” with some new and inventive additions to the typical summer program.

TREE FROG TREKS

Friends can participate in the same activities and get to spend the entire day together and those who are on their own will have the chance to meet new friends who share similar interests. Campers will spend their time doing their selection of in depth, enriching and fun activities. Our goal is to have as much variety as possible so that all campers will find something they love to do and might even try something new. Camp Hampton is an opportunity for campers to make their own activity decisions, and feel a sense of ownership and excitement over how they spend their day. It is our intention to provide a program where the “freedoms” of summer can be explored within the confines of a safe and supportive camp atmosphere.

Campers at Tree Frog Treks Summer Camp are the most excellent explorers! Each camper builds a special connection to nature with the help of his or her expert naturalists as they discover the world through science together. Campers spend every day outdoors, rain or shine, seeking out natural spaces and the living things that make them their home. During each camp session, campers will meet live animals, do wild experiments and build leadership and critical thinking skills through adventuring in nature with peers and instructors. Come meet Blondie the Burmese Python, Ivan the African Spur Thigh Tortoise, Squiggles the Asian Water Dragon and Stickum the White’s Tree Frog. We play games and tell stories to bring many unseen aspects of our urban habitat to life for our campers and their families.
