How to Talk to Kids About Sex, Sexual Ethics, and Decision-Making (Adult Class) In this continuing series (taking the first series is not a pre-requisite!), we will dive into the following questions through interactive exercises, role playing, and more! What are my own sexual vales—and which ones do I really want my child to have one day? How do I push past my own discomfort or my child's when talking about issues related to intimacy? I made a mistake when talking to my child—now what?! What important information do I need to give to my child regarding consent, pornography, and sexting? How do I actually teach my child sexual ethics while honoring their own unique needs and preferences? Is it really possible to talk about the importance of pleasure without encouraging sexual exploration? As we move through this class, we'll address your other questions along the way! 6TH GRADE CO-ED

In this continuing series on Healthy Friendships/Healthy Relationships, students will dive more deeply into consent and respectful behavior. We will explore the following questions through discussion and fun interactive exercises: What are everyday situations in which consent shows up? How do you express boundaries and preferences? Why does consent matter? How do you ask for permission? How do you draw boundaries?

In this continuing series, students will build on our discussions about gender by focusing on gender stereotypes in the media landscape and exploring what informs student ideas about gender, relationships, and race/class. We’ll be paying special attention to developing skills in media literacy so that students can begin to “talk back” to everyday scripts and begin to write their own.

Tot/Youth Chibi Judo - Pre-Judo

Hajime! Beginning Judo

Chibi (little) Judo helps children grow! As we jump, run, and roll, we develop balance, coordination, and confidence. We start out learning our names in Japanese, then do movement exercises, tumbling and some simple judo techniques that teach us to fall safely. We place a strong emphasis on culture so everyone plays games, sing songs and speaks Japanese. We learn to “nete” (lie down) and to “tonde” (leap) like a “raion” (lion). We bow politely to Sensei (teacher) and to one another. At Hanabi, respect comes as naturally as smiling. Judo Gi required and available for purchase from instructor ($70 + tax).

Hajime! (Begin!) establishes a strong base of judo technique, culture, and character. Fun tumbling, jumping and running activities warm us up before we practice our ukemi or falling techniues; Hajime students learn to fall safely, and effortlessly. Judo allows a smaller perosn to control an opponent bigger and stronger than themselves. We learn to hold a person down with “kesa-gatame” (scarf hold) and we practice throws - where our opponent can be flipped upside down - on sensei. Every class finishes with games that develop physical coordination, balance, and laughter. We sing in Japanese about inspiration and bow to each other respectfully. Respect and discipline are as much a part of Hanabi as laughter. Judo Gi required and available for purchase from instructor ($70 +tax).

Honto no Judo - Intermediate Judo HANABI JUDO

Our intermediate classes allow students to not just learn but to use their judo skills. In this class it is quite common to see two feet flying threw the air as a throwing technique is successfully applied. Skills taught are more advanced and honed through standing, tachi-waza, matwork, ne-waza drills and epecially through extended randori or free practice. The exercises are also a bit more intense and games a bit more physical. At this level the fun is a bit more rugged but the smiles are just as broad. Instructors keep a careful, supportive eye on all of the students to assure that techniques are used efficiently and safely. The environment is a great combination of competition and friendship. Tournament competition is not required but we want our intermediate students to have the skills necessary if they so choose. Judo Gi required and available for purchase from instructor ($70 +tax). Junior Running

Learn the art of fencing! David is USFCA and AAI Certified Coach with over 35 years experience. Bring water bottle, wear comfortable clothes (NO SHORTS) and athletic shoes. Protective gear provided. Note later start date.

This popular program for each elementary school provides kids an introduction to cross country. Practices include warm-up exercises, stretching, games, agility drills, and an endurance run of about 1 mile. Program is limited to 20 students for each site.

BEGINNING Fencing is often referred to as physical chess and combines the mental challenges of having to out think your opponent, while using the agility of martial arts. The class teaches the fundamentals: tactical, drills, and bouting. $5 material fee included.
