ALL OF US at THE REC! As the Recreation Department prepares for another fun-filled summer, we are once again offering a wide array of summer programs—aquatics, day camps, sports, arts, science and more— with the goal of providing something fun for everyone. Our summer camp planning tool Camps at a Glance (p5-16) is your ultimate summer planning assistant. It is a chart that shows you what is being offered every week (including ages, location, times and activity code) and if you want to read more about a particular camp, the page number is listed on the chart.

We are also excited to highlight Camp Everything (p18-19) which will be offered for 6 weeks and is sure to be a hit with those entering 1st - 6th grades. Camp Everything will transform Hampton Park into an all-day kid paradise where children have the freedom to choose their daily schedule, try new things, build skills, dive into what they love and make new friends! Our Summer Schoolmates (p20) will provide you afternoon care when you need it! Pair Summer Schoolmates with our new Camp Kaleidoscope (p21) or any of our other summer camps offered at Wildwood School and you have a fun, all day camp experience. If you need help getting your kids from one camp to another, please check out our Walking Transportation (p4) and note that camps listed in the guide with the Walking Transportation.

are the ones offering

Adults have a number of great activities too! The sport with a silly name is really fun to play—so grab a partner and sign-up for our new Summer Pickleball League (p57). We also offer a few wonderful groups for adults such as Walking on Wednesdays, Meditation, and the Monday Reading Group (p58). Make this the 4th of July that you get your friends together and enter a float into Piedmont’s 4th of July Parade! Float building is community building—and you could even win a prize! Check out our Thursday Night Movies in the Park, on July 16, 23, 30 and August 6, see opposite page for which movies. Finally, we are hiring! Are you retired and looking to work a few hours a week? Got teens or kids back from college who need a job? Check out p17 for information about open positions and our Counselor-In-Training program.

CASEY NUTT

We start the day with an hour of ceramics, then 1-1 ½ hours of martial arts, begining with a brief meditation. We move to warm up games and non-competitive mixed martial arts. Campers learn basic techniques, basic self-defense and short form. We create obstacle courses and be able to break a board with a hand or foot technique on the last day! No experience necessary.

After lunch, it’s clay time. Campers learn clay techniques of slab, pinch & coil along with glazing and other finishing techniques. Wheel throwing will be taught for campers 8 and over. Campers can create projects of their own or make project demonstrated.

Since 1982, Kids' Carpentry has taught thousands of boys and girls the joys of working with real tools and wood. The safe use of hand tools is emphasized while kids work together on trucks, bird feeders, doll furniture, airplanes and other items. In addition to the fun, kids gain experience in measuring and applied mathematics. By visualizing, planning, and building projects, children develop abstract reasoning capabilities and fine motor skills. Children can select from a wide range of project choices supplied by the instructor but are encouraged to design and build based on their own needs and imaginations. Carpentry classes are taught with one teacher for every 9 students, ensuring careful attention and respect for each child. Class size is limited.Visit kidscarpentry.net for more info!

Join the Revolution! Our Hamilton Camp is inspired by the smash hit Broadway Musical! Together students bring to life the compelling history of our Founding Fathers through songs, and clever rhymes. Our camp presents a revolutionary world of creative self-expression to students as they ruse up and improve their voices, stage presence, and confidence. Students are introduced to basic vocal techniques, harmony and choreography while performing age-appropriate lyrics and dance moves.

Learn to knit by the simple act of transferring a row of stitches from one knitting needle to another. Repeat this process and watch a wonderful fabric take shape! Have fun using colorful yarns to make a small bag, hat, scarf, or even a mouse! With step by step instruction, learn to cast on and use the basic knit and purl stitches and to bind off ~ all while learning basic knitting terms.

Meet Blondie the Burmese Python, Watermelon the Asian Water Dragon and Fred the White’s Tree Frog! We play games and tell stories to bring many unseen aspects of our urban habitat to life.

Dribbling & Shooting Co-Ed As the old saying goes, “You have to learn to walk before you run.” Our beginner to intermediate camp helps players get the basics of dribbling moves down before learning the fancy flyer moves of scoring. Ball protection, footwork, and shooting technique are all hallmarks of the greats—and explaining that should help players realize they can’t afford to miss this very important step in their skill development. Warning: This camp is so fun, you may find your kids “doing drills and building skills” with their friends in the driveway at home.
