日本での子どもの死亡原因は、事故を除き病気に限ると小児がんが第一位になります。年間
2,000から2,500人の子どもが小児がんと診断されています。 小児がんの予後に関してはめざましく進歩しましたが、治療プロセスはまだまだ長く過酷です。 日本でがんの治療を受けている子どもたちは、概して長期間入院します。半年から1年、もっと長 期にわたることも少なくありません。子どもたち自身はもとより、子どもたちを支える家族にとっ ても想像しがたい大変な負担となります。 シャイン・オン！キッズのミッション 日本で小児がんや重い病気と闘う子ども達とその家族を、心の面で支える : *生活の質の向上 *勇気づける *小児がんの認知を高める 子どもたちを輝かせるために！

ビーズ・オブ・カレッジ®（Beads of Courage=勇気のビーズ）は医療現場から生まれたもので、アメ リカの小児腫瘍科で看護師勤務経験を持つジーン・バルーシ氏によって考案され、日本ではシャ イン・オン！キッズが唯一このプログラムを展開できる団体として承認されています。小児がんと 闘う子どもたちは、つらい治療をひとつ終えるたび、勇気を持って頑張った証にカラフルなビーズ を受け取ります。それぞれのビーズは、ひとひとりの力強い物語であり、希望の象徴なのです。 ファシリティドッグは、ストレスを抱えた人々に愛情と安らぎを与えるよう専門的に訓練された犬 です。大きな特徴は、毎日同じ病院に勤務し、その施設での個々のニーズに合わせた活動を行え ること、時々訪問して触れ合うという短い時間ではなく、多くの時間を同じ犬と繰り返し過ごして いただけることです。勤務する施設のスタッフとして扱われ、患者との交流などを業務として行い ます。こうして、子ども達のこわい気持ちが楽しい気持ちに変わって、治療に向かっていきます。
