A long history: The emergence of the myth
•
The Château was built in 1810 and since then has been regarded as « the Versailles of the Medoc ». It is one of the most beautiful and impressive buildings in the region of Bordeaux
•
Established on the request of Napoleon III for the Paris World’s fair, 1855 classification ranked only four wines "First Great Classified Growth", and Margaux was the only one to be marked 20 out of 20!
•
Château Margaux became a high place in the art of making wine, and the hierarchy between the different Bordeaux growths began to appear. Château Margaux’ myth was born.

A long history: The emergence of the myth 1977: André Mentzelopoulos bought the property in 1977 He took spectacular action, be it in the vineyard, the cellars or the château. He put in place the drainage, the replantation… In this way, André Mentzelopoulos orchestrated the reconstruction of the architectural and viticultural heritage of Château Margaux with the objective of enabling the terroir to once again demonstrate its fabulous qualities. 1980: Corinne Mentzelopoulos was immediately ready for the challenge after the death of her father 1983: Paul Pontallier joined the company in 1983 to become a few years later its general manager for 34 years.

Five Centuries of Excellence
“This great TERROIR is the key to the excellence of our wines. But, without the care and passionate work of our predecessors, never would this gravelly outcrop, however privileged it maybe, have become a ‘premier cru’. ” Paul Pontallier

Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux
Sold in the 19th century as “Chateau Margaux vin blanc de sauvignon“, it has taken the name Pavillon Blanc in 1920. The first white wine produced in Médoc. A limited production. 100% Sauvignon Blanc! From low yield of less than 30 hectoliters per hectare, the wine is fermented then aged 7 to 9 months in oak barrels (one third new). A wine with a complex development : in its earliest years, the finesse, complexity, richness, length of Pavillon Blanc is surprising, even astonishing for a wine made only from Sauvignon white.
Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux
Created in 1908, his first aim was to … make the Grand Vin better! … until 1997 and the creation of a 3rd wine to make the Pavillon Rouge better! In general a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Three weeks fermentation and maceration in temperature-controlled wooden vats. 18 to 21 months’ aging in 50% new oak barrels. Fining, no filtration. The very fine balance and charm of the first wine can be found in the Pavillon Rouge, with less complexity, length and density. It is a worthy second to the First Wine that can be drunk earlier.
Château Margaux
In general a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Three weeks fermentation and maceration in temperature-controlled wooden vats. 21 to 24 months’ aging in 100% new oak barrels. Egg-white fining, no filtration. An extreme selection: less than a third of the crop went to the Grand Vin.
