The Guide of Theth Information • Guesthouses • Hotels • Restaurants • Guides • Maps
Theth Theth is situated in the Central part of the Albanian Alps in between the area ofBjeshkët e Nemuna in the West and Jezerca mountains in the East. It is by far one of the most important tourism and alpine center of the North. It is situated 70 km away from the city of Shkodra and 170 km from Tirana (152 km of these roads are asphalt roads up to the area called Qafëthore, while the last 18 km are rough roads). Theth is part of the Shala region (known also as Dukagjin), and under the administration of the Municipality of Shkodra. Theth is surrounded by several peaks, such as Radohima peak (2570 m), Arapi peak (2217 m), Papluka peak (2569 m), Ali’s peak (2471 m). Down in the valley lays the picturesque Theth, at the heights of 750-800 m.a.s.l.. Shala River runs through the valley and its villages. The mountainous area of Theth was declared a National Park in 1966 by decision no.96 of the Council of Ministers to protect the waterfalls, meadows, pastures, and rare flora and fauna. It
covers 2630 ha, of which 1680 ha are covered by forests. It is managed by the Regional Agency for Protected Areas (RAPA) located in Shkodra. This combination of steep mountains, waterfalls, canyons, rough rivers, natural lakes and cavesattracts visitors who enjoy almost untouched natural settings. The rare flora and fauna which can be found at the National Park add to this. Beech trees (Fagus Silvatica), cranberries (VacciniumMyrtilus) alternate with alpine pastures (PoionAlpinae) and dwarf shrubs (i.e. JuniperusCommunis Nana, JuniperusSibrica) of the alpine areas. Only in this park grow over 1500 species of plants, which represent almost half of the flora of the whole country (3215 plant species have been recorded in Albania). Shala River is worth to be mentioned for the abundancy of fish which can be found in it. From its spring in Okol onwards it is famous for its fish like the brown trout (Salmo TruttaFluviatilis). Locals are proud of their hospitality and are keen on conveying it to future generations. The people of Theth have a saying: “Shtëpiaasht e Zotitdhe e Mikut”1 , which clearly demonstrates the importance of hospitality. Dr. Franc Nopça, the famous Hungarian adventurer and scientist said about the people of
the area: “If you have their trust (besa), no place on earth would be safer. The aim of this guide is to inform national and international tourists about the existing guesthouses, restaurants, farms and hotels 2 situated in Theth. It also informs visitors about the different touristic highlights in the area, including its agrobiodiversity, hiking trails, natural and cultural highlights. 1
The equivalent translation in English would roughly be: My home belongs to God and to guests/friends.
2 As of 2016
How to reach Theth? Theth can easily be reached by car, however a four-wheel drive is recommended as part of the road is not paved yet and also to reach more remote areas. From Tirana take the highway SH1/ E762 to Shkodra. From Shkodra continue on the SH1/ E762 to Koplik, then turn right and take the SH21 to Theth.
Guesthouses, travel agencies or local guides can pick up tourists during the day with four-wheel-drives from Shkoder. From Tirana buses and minibuses to Shkoder leave frequently (every hour; during summer even every 45 min.) from Karl Topia Square, which is also known as “Zogu i Zi”. From Shkoder minibuses leave for Theth at “Rus”, normally twice a day. The first minibus leaves at 7:00 and the second one at 13:00. The total trip from Tirana to Theth takes 5 hours by bus
The nearest airport is Tirana International Airport (Mother Teresa Airport). From where you can take the bus of the “Tirana Express” company, which departs every hour from the Tirana airport to the capital’s center. From there follow the instructions mentioned above. There is also the option to fly to Podgorica (Montenegro) and take a taxi or bus from the airport to Shkoder from where the trip can be continued by minibus or four-wheel-drive taxi.
The Ethnography Museum of Theth

Places to visit in Theth The Ethnography Museum of Theth Kulla of Lulash Boshi: This is a typical kulla, where a man called Lulash Boshi was living, right in the center of Theth built on top of steep cliff which is 9 meters high. The 87m² of museum has been partly renovated and decorated with typical adornments. The old guests’ room has a fireplace and a wooden carved ceiling, made by local craftsmen who took great pride in their work. Usually the guests’ room is decorated a lot more than the rest of the house in order to show respect to visitors. Even though the kulla lacks proper maintenance, it is still worth a visit. Ask at the guesthouse next to it for the key.

Syri Blu (Blue Eye): Syri Blu is close to the village of Kapre. Along the way to Syri Blu visitors can discover a beautiful landscape, passing first the Black Well which is formed by the Black River (Lumi i Zi). Syri Blu is a pool formed by water melted from the high peaks. Syri Blu is approximately 100m² wide and 3-5m deep. 3
Blue Eye
The cave of Arap: Arap’s or Harap’s peak is located in the vicinity of Theth village and is known also for its cave and 800m high climbing wall. At the very bottom of the mountain lays the cave with the same name. The exploration of this vertical cave began around 1992, and it has been explored up to 365m from the cave’s entrance. As this is a vertical cave, ropes are needed to visit it. There is no entrance fee to visit the cave. Caves should always be visited accompanied by trained guides. Theth waterfall: It lays in the vicinity of Grunas village, at a height of 900m.a.s.l. and is approximately 30m high. It is nice to visit, especially when the weather is good and the sun is reflected in the water sparkles, forming a colourful rainbow.
Isolation tower: This kulla is expected to be around 350-400 year old. It has been used to protect people from blood feud. Today it is an attraction site for tourists that come to visit Theth. The kulla has three floors with small windows only on the upper floor. It was here that the men in isolation observed their enemies to attack them. The kulla has recently undergone renovation from the outside and inside. Typical items from the life inside an insolation tower are at display.
KULLA IN THE ALPS (kulla originates from old Arabic meaning fortress) Albanian Kulla is predominantly found in the north of the country and represents vernacular architecture. As a result of attacks from different armies, the construction of kulla became a necessity in the mountainous regions, mainly because villages are far from each other and coordination for defense was complicated. Kulla were however also designed to provide refuge in the case of blood feud. Murderers held here were protected from deadly revenge, during months and sometimes years, until the debt was paid or the feud was reconciled through mediation. The kulla in the Alps have been constructed with uncut stones and often on a rock or a cliff. To decrease the danger from an attack, the windows were left small and loopholes can be found to shoot out of the kulla. Kullas were built in such a way to provide residents with water, storage of firewood and food for longer times on the lower floors. The upper floor hosted the “çelers” small sleeping rooms, a room with fire and the kitchen. The main room in one kulla is the guest room, with a fireplace facing the door. Sheep skin, goat wool rugs, carpets and wool pillows (decorated with embroidery of different folk motifs) make it comfortable.
Isolation tower “Koçeku”
The host sits usually next to the fireplace, facing the door, whilst the guest sits in front of him. Hooks are placed on the wall, so that the host can easily reach the weapons which were hung there in case of dispute. Nowadays they are mostly used to hand different folk instruments there, i.e. çifteli, lahuta. Passers-by, even without knowing the owner, were always able to drop in as a guest and were welcomed by the traditional greeting “May God have brought you”. In Theth the kulla was not only the house for the extended family to live in, but also the place to produce tools for daily life, such as: weapons, bells, locks, cradles, instruments, plows, barrels, distaffs. Bards and folk singers have been inspired by the kulla and sing about heroes, like: Gjeto Basho Muji and Halili, Gjergj Elez Alia and their fights in the mountains. For all these reasons, a high number of kullas are declared monuments of culture, with an important value for the Albanian cultural heritage to be protected by the UNESCO.

The Peaks of the Balkans The Peaks of the Balkans represent a green path/trail which is 192 km long and runs through the Alps of three countries, namely: Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro. Trekking in this trail can start from any of the three aforementioned countries, namely: Theth or Valbona in Albania, Plav in Montenegro and Peja in Kosovo. The trail can be done in 10 or 13 days depending on the motivation and physical conditions. The level of difficulty varies from easy to moderate, however it requires good physical conditions and appropriate equipment’s for trekking (such as: appropriate shoes for trekking, raincoats, flashlights, GPS and the first aid box). Even though the trail is marked, it is recommended that trekking takes place in groups or with a guide since the trail goes through areas which are not really populated. Mountain guides have received training through GIZ projects tailored to meet the expectations of international tourists. They are familiar with the trail and have been certified by DAV (Deutscher Alpenverein). For further information about mountain guides, accommodation, procedures, detailed description of the stage of trekking, including GPS profiles, can be found at: I: http://www.peaksofthebalkans.com E: albania@peaksofthebalkans.com
Agrobiodiversity in the Albanian Alps Due to the relative remoteness of the area, a large variety of genes, species, ecosystems and landscapes – or summed up in one word, biodiversity – can be found in the Northern Alps of Albania. People living there have preserved traditional farming practices over centuries, thereby protecting local native plants and breeds which provide for their livelihoods. Hikers may get a taste of this exciting and colorful agricultural biodiversity, be it different varieties of grapes, cherries, maize, tomatoes, chestnut, sage or lavender or agricultural produce such as: wines, salads, jams and teas or cheese and other dairy products from local breeds of goats and cattle. Growing native species and looking after animals unique to this region helps to mitigate negative impacts of agriculture on biodiversity and to restore and preserve local ecosystems. This is important in order to preserve the quality of soil, air
and water which in turn allows rare species of wild plants and animals to survive and flourish in the protected areas of the Albanian Alps. Conserving agrobiodiversity in the Northern Alps goes along with sustainable economic and social development, farmers can compete on the market offering a larger variety to their customers. They can sell their mountain products to different guesthouses and shops in the region. This in turn attracts tourists who want to learn more about the origin of certain products and the way they are processed.
Species of national importance which can be found in Theth Bean of Shala (Phaseolus Vulgaris) Beans from the area of Shala have evolved over many years to adapt themselves to rough climate of the mountains and are considered to be very resistant in comparison with other types of beans. This species are not very voluminous but grows very fast in 7-8 weeks. It is usually cultivated in combination with corn to grow along its trunk. The beans of Shala boil fast and have a pleasant taste which is why they are used for many typical dishes in the region. Strawberry (Fragaria Sp.) This wild strawberry grows and can be found in the forests and pastures of Theth. It has adapted itself to the local weather conditions, each plant producing only about 5-7 small fruits at a time. The fruit has a strong characteristic flavouring and is very tasty. Visitors can just pick it along their hike or try it as jam in one of the local guesthouses or restaurants.
Raspberry (Rubus Accidentalis) Raspberries are largely found in the forestry areas of Theth. They grow wild next to the houses or pastures of the area and hence are easily collected by locals and visitors. They can either be consumed fresh, as jam, fruit juice or dried. The raspberries contain high amounts of polyphenol antioxidants (salycilic and ellagic acids) and are said to help against a sore throat, stomach aches and to help with the blood circulation.

Çulek grapes (Vitis vinifera)
Çulek grapes (Vitis vinifera) Çulek grapes can be found in all the villages in the valley of Theth and other parts of the Alps, however they grow only up to 850 m.a.s.l. as they fail to ripen above this height. The plants require sufficient sunlight, ventilation and good soil, which is why they usually grow on the sides of the parcels. Plants are changed every 20-35 years, producing 0.5-3 kg to 5 kg grapes/plant. It is resistant to diseases, low and high temperatures. The disadvantage of this grape is that it occupies more space and does not justify the yield performance. It is used mainly for the production of grapa (raki) and less for fresh consumption.

Yellow wild plum (Prunus sp.)
Red wild plum (Prunus sp.)
Yellow or red wild plum (Prunus sp.) Plums are found in the entire region up to the altitude of 1000 m.a.s.l.. They have been cultivated for many years mainly on land which is less fertile. Trees grow 3.5 m- 12 m high, blooming small and white, and produce small fruits. Farmers usually do not look after the trees after planting them; they sporadically water and clip it. The plant is resistant to diseases, high and low temperatures, and it is very productive with each tree producing between 30- 70 kg of fruits. The only negative feature is that its branches easily break during winter. The fruits are eaten fresh or used to produce grapa (raki), juice or jam.

Local Corn – “Thethi Corn” (Zea mays L.)
Local Corn – “Thethi Corn” (Zea mays L.) This type of corn has been cultivated in the region for 70 years, passing the seed on from one generation to another. Around 5-10% of the land surface is currently used by local farmers to produce Thethi corn. It is usually planted in mid-May on mountain terraces facing east and harvested in mid-August, having a short production cycle of 78-82 days. The plant itself is relatively short, growing 120-150cm, and is resistant to diseases and changing temperatures. Due to its low productivity and the small number of families still producing it, this species of corn is endangered should old families leave from the area. Visitors can try Thethi Corn in the form of bread (bukë misri).

Conservation of Agrobiodiversity in Rural Albania (CABRA) Biodiversity – Opportunities for people and nature CABRA aims to halt the loss of biodiversity and increase the diversity of domestic animal and plant species. For this to be successful, people must recognize their value and benefit from them. This is particularly the case for impoverished rural areas where many inhabitants have left their homes because they saw no economic prospects. If these areas were to stimulate higher earnings and if ownership and use rights of natural resources were strengthened, biodiversity would almost likely be better protected. Therefore, and to increase the overall value of the region, CABRA is promoting sustainable mountain tourism, agriculture and other businesses that create both economic and environmental benefits. CABRA is acting at the national, regional and local level. It strengthens the competence of government units and administrations on all of these levels. Yet this project is not about deciding for people, but with them. That is why CABRA takes a governance approach which involves multiple stakeholders.
