Best Programmed Pi Kapp College Ever!

"One of the most exciting, meaningful and fun-filled periods of my life." "A super experience that all Pi Kapps should have the opportunity to share." These, and other similar statements, reflect the attitude of those student members attending the 1976 edition of Pi Kapp College.

This five day event, labeled a leadership school, has to be experienced to appreciate. Description must become graphic and demonstrable in order to communicate the value and results.

Following registration on Sunday there was held a "bitch" session for all participants to have an opportunity to express their frustrations, concerns, desires, and recommendations regarding the administrative and policy directors of the fraternity. President Scharfenstein and Executive Director Owen were on the firing line for this activity.

The first meal, highlighted by roast beef, preceeded an opening welcome by President Scharfenstein and the official presentation of the National Rose, Miss Mary Kathryn

Fleming of Appalachian State University. (See summer issue of the STAR AND LAMP.) She brought the house down with her rendition of "A Grand Old (Pi Kappa Phi) Flag".

Following a "get acquainted" session and a team building exercise, a model initiation resulting in two honor initiates becoming members was conducted by students from five different chapters.

Those two honored are William C. Johnson, Associate Director of Student Affairs, Madison College, and Charles K. Grissom, Jr., Belmont Abbey.

After a sudden awakening on Monday morning the students were given outstanding advice on seeking employment in the future by Mr. Steve Campbell, President of Lendman Associates. Excellent sessions followed during the next four days.

Special recognition was given by the students in their critiques to Phil Tappy for his "selling" session, Lonnie Strickland and his M.B.O. presentation, and Dr. Ed King as he viewed our ritual through the

eyes of a Sigma Chi. These four days were found full of information gathering sessions on Recruitment, Member Education, Alumni Relations, Finances, Scholarships, Social, Retreats, Attitude Apathy, Awards, IFC, Public Relations, Publications, Alcohol and Drugs, Leadership Techniques, Constitution and By-Laws, FundRaising, House Management, etc.

Constant informal discussion sessions, private conversations, late social activities, some athletic activities and other instructional events added much to the value of the experience. It is rumored that the "North" defeated the "South" in both football and basketball. Alpha Xi did not bring their Brooklyn trash can but did not let that deter their concocting some bash.

There was a dramatic conclusion when, on Thursday, Mel Metcalfe mystified all with his traveling magic show and then brought all to their feet with his presentation on "Love". All in all, it was one of the best programmed Pi Kapp Colleges ever presented.

Tom Dalton enjoys contratulations from Kathy Fleming, National Rose, following his recognition as Chapter Advisor of the Year.

When one talks about perfection we all know it is near impossible.

However, it appears to come almost true when Tom Dalton, Georgia, is investigated as to the job he does as a Chapter Advisor.

Tom was the first, and has been the only, Chapter Advisor for Delta Beta Chapter at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, Georgia. His achievements include a dedication unparalleled and a love of Pi Kappa Phi that is without question. Constant advise and counsel to the indi-

vidual and to the chapter is expected of all Chapter Advisors, but only to brothers like Tom does this become an obligation.

The sacrifice of his wife, Betty, and two sons is apparent and they also should share in his recognition as Pi Kappa Phi Chapter Advisor of the Year for 1976. This award has been made by the National Council and was presented to Tom by National Vice President Phil Tappy at Pi Kapp College.

STUDENT OF THE YEAR It is not easy to select a student from among 2,600 and label him the outstanding one. This does require some subjective analysis along with objective data. So many are qualified for consideration!

This is the second year that Pi Kappa Phi has designated a student as "Student of the Year".

This year he is John Glisson of Beta Tau Chapter, Valdosta State College.

John has now gone on to the University of Georgia where he is studying Veterinary Medicine. This continued student status would have been expected of John.

Glisson has served the fraternity as Archon, Treasurer, Secretary, Chaplain, Historian and Warden. In addition he has chaired a number of committees.

While being self-supporting as a resident assistant in the dorm, John held many campus offices. For an example he was Chief Justice of both Student Government and Student Traffic Court. He was selected as the campuses outstanding biology student and received the school's highest academic award with a 3.975 average.

As might be expected, John is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and is listed in Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges.

John is a political speaker and evidenced this ability while accepting this award at Pi Kapp College — 1976. The Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation recognized Glisson with a financial grant to go along with the wall plaque presented by the Administrative Office.

A financial grant has been given to Alpha Mu Chapter at Penn State by the Pi Kappa Phi Scholarship Foundation. This grant is in support of Pi Kappa Phi's Chapter Service of the Year Award. This recognizes the chapter's involvement in many service activities but primarily for two major efforts.

Over 1260 man hours were involved in Alpha Mu's annual "Turkey Drive" when more than $2,000 in food and cash was raised for needy families as identified by a local church.

Approximately 2,000 man hours were involved in a Dance Marathon for Muscular Dystrophy. This resulted in over $2,300 being raised for Muscular Dystrophy.

This was the second year that Pi Kappa Phi has awarded a chapter for its contribution to outside needs.

It is now a permanent award and one that is sought after by those chapters who recognize that "the service they provide others is but the rent they pay for the space they occupy here on earth".

EIGHT STUDENTS HELP ADMINISTER The student member of Pi Kappa Phi is heard. In fact he helps manage the activities of the Administrative Office. Of course, each and every student cannot be directly involved.

Yet, through his personal eight student members he is represented.

These eight constitute the Council of Arch ons.

This body was created by the National Council, and was first constituted in 1969. The purpose is to increase student imput in the administration of your fraternity.

This is done first by careful selection of student members to insure geographical, size, and type of institution variety.

Then the avenue of involvement is two fold, with one of a.forced nature. Many new activities, significantly different procedures and changed major programs are first presented by the Executive Director to the members to secure their help, opinions, suggestions and general imput. In addition they are encouraged to involve their chapter members in their deliberations.

The alternate avenue of involvement is the unilateral imput by members to the Administrative Office — when and for what purpose — and to the other members. Their new ideas, altered programs and fresh recommendations help keep the staff in tune with the campus.

For the school year 1976-77 these all important participants in the administration of your fraternity are: Wes Murphy, Valdosta; Ford Woodard, Michigan State; Marc McConnaughey, North Carolina State;Russ Lindsey,Charleston; Jim LaVance, Oregon State; Paul Wesch, Alabama; Ed Rebula, Rensselaer; and Greg Gallagher, Memphis State.

GET IN THE NEWS BUSINESS Pi Kapps make new every day, right in your own chapter, and there are thousands of people waiting to read and hear about it through their "hometown" newspapers and broadcast media. An active and agressive hometown news campaign in your chapter can take advantage of this waiting market.

People like to read and hear about people, especially those they know personally, and that's the reason hometown newspapers and broadcast stations are so successful-they tell news about local folks that is not available from big-city outlets.

Editors and new directors are hungry for news about hometown people; including those who have gone to college and joined Pi Kappa Phi. Start with a list of hometown news media- print and broadcastavailable from the college news bureau on your campus. Most likely they will be glad to share a copy of their mailing list of instate newspapers (dailies and weeklie's) and radio - TV stations. For out-of-state communities, they probably have national print and broadcast directories from which you can copy addresses. Other sources are the state press and broadcast associations, and in many states the telephone company which publishes a statewide news media directory.

Be sure you have a complete list of media outlets for the hometown of every chapter member, associate member and pledge.

Your most likely markets for placing stories are weekly and small daily newspapers and local radio and television stations, although on more important stories including honors and awards, even major metropolitan dailies and broadcast outlets may pick up the item. In any case, send the story to every media outlet in the chapter member's hometown, large or small.

Hometown news stories are about individuals or groups of individuals from that community. And virtually any out-of-the-ordinary occurence can generate a news item. When an individual pledges, is initiated, is elected to a chapter office, receives a fraternity award or honor, or participates in a fraternity project (to give a few examples) he is worth a few lines back home. And chapter members need not be the only source of news. The naming of chapter sweethearts or presentation of awards to alumni can also generate hometown news.

Writing the story can be easy if you follow a simple outline and remember to include the basic factswho, what, where, when, how, and why. Attached is a sample news release you can use as a basic guideline.

In the case of a news item involving several chapter. members from the same hometown, send a group release rather than a separate release on each one. In this case, the lead paragraph on the attached release might read: "Four Burgsville men have been pledged to Zeta Zeta chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at Old Algernon State College.

Joining the chapter during recent rush activities on the campus were Sam E. Smith, Joe L. Jones, George Jackson, and Rufus Hocutt." Go on from there to include a separate paragraph about each individual, telling about his parents, college studies, and high school background.

For upperclassmen, a paragraph about campus activities might be added to the release. For awards

and honors, a brief explanation of the accolade should be included. In any release, look for ways to tell your chapter's story and make some public relations points, as illustrated in the last paragraph of the sample.

A successful hometown news campaign in your chapter depends on having a dependable member to do the job - probably your historian, aided by any journalism majors in the chapter. You need a "news hound" who will be alert to news possibilities and will get releases out promptly. Nothing is as stale as old news.

Then, you need basic information on file about each active and pledge, updated at least once a year.

Have each member fill out a questionaire which includes the basic data on parents, activities, honors, background, etc.

Pledgings, initiations and elections are obvious times to produce hometown news releases. But an alert chapter will be vigilant about other opportunities such as honors and participation in community service projects.

In preparing releases,type neatly, double space, and send a separate release to each hometown outlet.

Don't forget broadcast stations alot of people listen who don't read the local newspaper.

Photographs are a nice extra touch, though they can become an expensive item. If you use them, send black - and - white glossies, 1-column or 5x7 (no snapshots, please). Your college annual or the firm which produces your chapter composite may be able to supply you with negatives of your members at a reasonable cost, and local photographer's studio can produce prints. If you include photos, insert cardboard in the envelope to keep it from bending and mark "PHOTOGRAPH ENCLOSED, DO NOT BEND" On the outside.

H.dmetown news is a valuable public relations tool for your chapter, worth every bit of the time and effort you invest. It tells prospective rushees and their families about your chapter and its active, interesting life, it reminds alumni of your existence, and it tells parents and hometown friends that you care about your brothers.
