BREAKING AWAY A REALITY PI KAPPS FINISH 2nd IN LITTLE 500 Have you seen or heard about the movie "Breaking Away"? If you have, then you are already familiar with Indiana University's biggest spring semester weekend. A bicycle race modeled after the Indianapolis

500; the "Little 500" features 33 teams of four members each competing for 200 laps on an ordinary quarter-mile cinder track. The fifty mile event soared to national attention recently as the highlight of the 20th Century Fox film "Breaking Away." Directed by Peter Yates (Bullit, The Deep) and

written by Steve Tiesch, a former Little-Five rider, it captured the Oscar this year for Best Screen Play.

That is just what happened at Livingston University last week

It is with deep regret and extreme sorrow that I announce the death of a chapter. This is an "occurrence" I never thought I would ever face in my life.

The coroner was called and an autopsy was done of that chapter and these were his findings: When he arrived on the scene, he found on the faces of the members of the chapter, no more understanding of fraternity and fraternalism than a baby. He saw a chapter assembled for the sole purpose of partying and raising hell. He saw a chapter with no understanding of the real world; instead, they had used fraternity as an excuse to justify irresponsibility and immaturity.

His senior year he led Newberry to a 7-3 mark and a 12th place finish in the country in the final N.A.I.A. Division I Poll. That year he was named "Defensive Player of the Year" in the South Atlantic Conference and "Most Valuable Player" in N.A.I.A. District Six. He was also named a second-team All-American.

He was a four-year starter and twice was named to the all-conference and all-district teams. He was also twice named "Player of the Week" in the state and in the South Atlantic Conference.

He capped his senior campaign by being named Newberry's "Outstanding Lineman" and permanent team captain. He was also chosen to participate in the Annual Blue-Gray All-Star Classic in Montgomery, Alabama.

"I just felt that I didn't give myself a fair chance," said the Marietta, Georgia, native when asked about making the jump from the coaching to the playing ranks. "I felt that 1 was doing well at Seattle but I had to leave. I figured that if I ever wanted to do it again I had better do it now."

"If I don't make it with Detroit I'll try to get on with another team.

If I can't make it I'll try to finish my Master's Degree here at Livingston. I need only 15 more hours." he noted.

The people in Livingston are pulling hard for their adopted son to make it in pro football. But, whether he makes it or not, Charlie Coles will still go down in Livingston as the big coach that has always got a grin on.

EDITORIAL

PUSH towards the future I have been very impressed with our growth over the last few years.

It is a real pleasure to be associated with the fastest growing fraternity in the country. The growth that impresses me, however, is not just the growth in new brothers and new chapters, but in other fraternity related programs, such as P.U.S.H. Our Foundation in the last few weeks has made some very bold steps in terms of positioning itself to aid and support our growth in an even more meaningful manner in the future. In the past, the Foundation generated funds to support scholarships as well as to defray a portion of the cost of such leadership schools as Pi Kapp College. The Foundation is now moving toward allowing us to utilize the Foundation for chapter house improvements and toward such important uses as gathering funds for P.U.S.H. while continuing the existing scholarship programs.

We are indeed fortunate to have the caliber of volunteers that we have as Foundation Trustees. Their thoughts in terms of how they can work with the fraternity to bring about our major objectives of continued growth and service to membership is better than ever.

The key to our successful growth has not only been with our Administrative Office in Charlotte, but with the many dedicated volunteers in our organization - such as chapter advisors, area governors, committee chairmen, etc., who have taken upon themselves a responsibility to make our fraternity the premier fraternity in the country.

Yet, I would like to see even more alumni involved. In our fraternity once you become a member you are a member for life. We do not have alumni in our fraternity; instead, we have members and student members. Every brother is a vital part. The work that our chapter at West Virginia did for P.U.S.H. is an example of hard dedicated work to fulfill the purpose. In this issue you read about Florida's "Mile of Pennies" fund raiser. It is exciting to have this power, energy, and drive from members of our fraternity who are dedicated to promoting the ideas for which we stand.

We have a long way to go in terms of reaching our objectives, but at the same time we have come an enormous way. It certainly is not the time to stop.

Troy State wins All-Sports Trophy

Auburn-Montgomery Dominates Campus

Two years ago, fire swept through the fraternity house at Gamma Gamma at Troy State University.

The facility was leveled and the chapter archives were all but destroyed. But through the intangible bond of Brotherhood, the spirit of Fraternity has lifted the men at Troy to new heights of achievements.

Highest scholarship average; winner of All-Greek Sports trophy; leading recruiting chapter on campus; most publicized chapter on campus; more than one-half the brotherhood involved in external organizations mostly as executives. It sounds like one of our old, established chapters is taking over a campus.

Not hardly — the above is the track record of Epsilon Delta Chapter at Auburn University in Montgomery since their installation on February 9 of this year.

The chapter, under the guidance of Dr. Doug Hawkins, Benny Pinkard and Dr. Don Hines, secured a larger home and spent two years renovating the dwelling. The house is larger than the previous physical plant making it better equipped to handle the growing needs of the chapter.

"The house is serving two purposes," states Historian Ben Guthrie,"First, it provided a vehicle to build brotherhood. We worked a lot of hours together and shared the same disappointments. Second, it does give us the facilities to house more members."

On a 3.00 scale, the brothers obtained a 2.46 to easily outdistance the other Greeks. In 1979, the AUM chapter as a colony was also a runaway winner with the trophy.

Much of the scholastic success can be traced to the positions of leadership held by brothers in Epsilon Delta. Among the chapter's roll call is the Student Government President; three out of seven Student Government Supreme Court Justices; over one-fifth of the Student Senators; President of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary and the list goes on.

The chapter carried their classroom success with them to their athletic endeavors taking the first All-Greek Sports trophy given at AUM. The award was clinched when Epsilon Delta fought off all competition for their second straight softball title.

A point of interest is that while spending most of their free time working on the house, the chapter was able to win the All-Sports Trophy. They placed second in football and softball and third in basketball. The Pi Kapps already hold the honor of being the only fraternity on campus to retire an All-Sports trophy (in 1977) by winning ; two years in a row.

Needless to say, plans are under way to retire the new trophy this coming year.

Gamma Gamma has maintained an active social schedule this year.

Some social events were set up to raise money for the National Project, P.U.S.H. Their Easter Bunny contest netted $200.00 for the development of the units.

Whether in the chapter room, on the sports field or around campus, Gamma Gamma is carrying the banner of Pi Kappa Phi high and proud.

After getting off to a sluggish start, the brothers have developed an excellent Fall recruitment program stressing personal contact. Along with the preceeding list of accomplishments, the chapter should be on its way to developing a strong brotherhood through their recruitment program.

As you can see, Pi Kapps in the Heart of Dixie are moving onward and upward.

Patrick E. Farley - Pat returns to the Administrative Staff for his second year as he takes on the role of P.U.S.H. Administrator. He recently married the former Miss Cindy Watkins and they now reside in Charlotte.

L. Clay Edmonds - Clay comes to the Administrative Staff from East Carolina University where he received his B.S.B.A. in Accounting.

While an active member of Beta Phi Chapter, Clay chaired the Scholarship Committee, served as Assistant Treasurer and Treasurer and was elected Vice-President of the I.F.C. Clay was a nominee to the Phi Theta Kappa National Honorary Fraternity and is a native of Whiteville, North Carolina. His interests include lacrosse, basketball, soccer, tennis and water and snow skiing.

J. Ernest Johnson - Ernie attended Auburn University where he earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration. He joined the Alpha Iota Chapter as a freshman in 1976 and was selected "Pledge of the Year."

As an active brother of the fraternity he served as Archon, Secretary and Chaplain. He is also a big brother of Delta Zeta Sorority and a member of Beta Alpha Psi, the National Honorary Accounting Fraternity. Ernie is a native of Huntsville, Alabama, and enjoys tennis, and snow and water skiing.

Steve W. Smith - Steve comes to the

Administrative Staff from Indiana University where he received his B.S. degree in Marketing. At Alpha Psi Chapter, Steve served as House Manager, Vice-Archon and Archon.

He also was active on campus as he served as President of the I.U. Hockey Club and Treasurer of the Sports Club Federation. Steve is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, and his personal interests include snow and water skiing, tennis and jogging.

Andrew A. Towson - Andy attended the University of Georgia where he received his B.S. in Business Administration. He was very active at Lambda Chapter serving as Chaplain, Social Chairman, Secretary, Rush Chairman and Archon. Andy also served on the 1980 All-Campus Homecoming Committee. He is originally from Dublin, Georgia, and his interests include tennis, basketball and water skiing.

R. Michael Willis - Mike comes to the Administrative Staff from the University of Florida, where he received a B.S. in Accounting.

While an active of Alpha Epsilon Chapter, Mike served as Archon, Vice-Archon and chaired the I.F. C. Alcohol Policy and Education Committee. He is also a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, national honorary fraternities.

Mike is originally from Sarasota, Florida, and his interests include basketball, racquetball and water skiing.

Your National Council National President: A. J. (Lonnie) Strickland, Ill

National Treasurer: William Drewry Fuqua

Lonnie Strickland, Omicron, Alabama, has served on the National Council since 1972. He has held the offices of National Treasurer, National Vice-President and became National President in 1979.

Lonnie received his B.S. degree from the University of Georgia, and his M.S. degree and Ph.D. in Business Administration from Georgia State University. He is Associate Professor of Business Policy and Corporate Planning at the University of Alabama.

Lonnie and his wife Kitty have two children and reside in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Bill Fuqua, Mu Chapter, Duke University, joined the National Council in 1979. From 19631979, Bill has served Pi Kappa Phi as auditor of the Fraternity.

He is the Treasurer for the First Railroad and Banking Company of Georgia and is active in his community of North Augusta, South Carolina. He has served on the Chamber of Commerce, and worked with the March of Dimes and United Way campaigns. Bill is married and has two children.

National Vice-President: David Harold Jaffee

Bill Finney joined the National Council in 1979 as National Secretary after many years as an Area Governor. Since serving as Historian of his chapter (Gamma Xi, Georgia Southwestern), Bill was Area Governor for Area V from 1973-77, and Area XXV from 1978-79. His outstanding work as Area Governor won him the Area Governor of the Year award both in 1975 and 1977.

Bill served as chairman of the Area Governor's Council from 1975-79 and was instrumental in the organization of the Americus, Georgia, Alumni Association and the reorganization of the Greater Atlanta Alumni Association. Bill

David Jaffee was elected to the National Council at the 1979 Supreme Chapter which was held in his home town of Charleston, South Carolina. David is from Alpha Chapter at the College of Charleston where he was very active, holding the offices of Archon, Treasurer, Historian, and Chaplain. David is the President of Jaffee Realty Co. and has been active in his community, notably for establishing a successful rodent control program for the City of Charleston. David and his wife Dolly are expecting their first child soon.

National Secretary: William Lee Finney

is currently the Assistant Benefits Manager for the Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States, having worked for the Equitable since 1971. Bill is married to the former Jane Scott who was a charter member of the Gamma Xi Little Sisters and a member of the 1970 Gamma Xi Rose Court. They have one son, Scottie.

National Chaplain: Walter Keith Sheppard Walt Sheppard is the manager of Customer Service with Halston Fragrances, a subsidiary of NortonSimon. In his undergraduate years at Alpha Upsilon Chapter at Drexel University, Walt served as Archon, Treasurer, Historian and Chaplain.

More recently he has served as the Secretary of the Alpha Upsilon Alumni Corporation since 1974.

Walt received his MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Walt is married, has two children, and lives in Mt. Holly, New Jersey.

National Chancellor: James Clinton Turk Judge James Turk provides legal advice to the National Council as Chancellor of the Fraternity.

Judge Turk was active at both Xi Chapter, Roanoke, and Rho Chapter, Washington & Lee, where he earned his A.B. and L.L.B.

The Anniston, Alabama, native is credited with creating the luxe "spectacular" sign which revolutionized viewing in Times Square some three decades ago, and within the past few years has been "the lamplighter" behind the relighting of the Empire State Building and the (Harry) Helmsley Building at 230 Park Avenue. Both buildings have re-emerged as mid-Gotham "classics" .. . thanks to Helmsley's vision and Leigh's creative magic of lighting, paint, color and gold leafing.

Leigh, who still retains a Southern softness garnered in a childhood spent in Alabama and South Carolina. is one of the most adroit

of salesmen coupled with the vision and imagination of an Eighteenth Century poet. He charms and sells simultaneously.

After college at the University of Florida, where he was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Chapter, Leigh held a sales job with an outdoor advertising firm in Atlanta.

During the height of the Great Depression, the now 72 year old Leigh came to New York City and almost immediately opened his own advertising firm bearing his name. The young dynamo did this with more faith than reality, but quickly sold his first account, a sign location — in the Bronx! As this account was a mid-Manhattan hotel (the St. Moritz), the accomplishment was important to him because the barter deal gave him a home, office and food. However, between his office's opening in 1933 and the beginning of World War II, both Leigh and his magical

Past National President: Thomas Philip Tappy Phil Tappy, Lambda, University of Georgia, was the President of the National Council from 1977-79 and now serves on the Council as Past National President. He has served on the National Council for nine years, holding the positions of Chaplain, Historian, VicePresident, and President. He has also served the Fraternity as an Area Governor. Phil is a Senior Account Representative for Eastman Kodak Company - Business Systems Division. He has been in Kodak's 100% Club for seven years and selected to the "21" Club (top 5% of Kodak Sales Force) for three years. Phil is married, has two sons, and lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Leigh's list of honors and tributes would fill a separate page. Among the most outstanding are five New York City awards from two mayors, Applause Award from New York Sales Executive Club, Illumination Society of America Award for Empire State lighting, key to the city for Civic Award and the Broadway Association's highest award for 13 years as its President and Chairman.

In summation a life which has been rich and exciting in both challenges and accomplishments, Douglas Leigh, who was tagged "Boy Wonder" in his early days now considers his two greatest accomplishments between ages 7072 as the Empire State lighting plus color and the Tower and front gold lighting (plus gold leafed sculptures) of the Helmsley Building at 230 Park Avenue.

For Douglas Leigh, life is not only a banquet at which he has been asked to participate, but each course gets richer and more interesting. And — even in his wildest flights of fancy — can he imagine exactly what dessert might be.

Building the bridge for tomorrow's Pi Kappa Phi's

Hooper Alexander III Epsilon 365 Friends often ask me what my motivation was for devoting so much time to Pi Kappa Phi. I believe this poem is more eloquent than I could be: THE BRIDGE BUILDER Through all of these times the Fraternity, the brotherhood, and the guidance available to me seemed to provide both direction and positive reinforcement.

An old man,going a lone highway, Came at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm vast and deep and wide; The old man crossed in the twilight dim, The sullen stream had no feat for him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide.

"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near, "You are wasting your strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day, You will never again pass this way; You've crossed the chasm deep and wide; Why build you this bridge at evening tide?"

The builder lifted his old gray head -"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followeth after me today, A youth whose feet must pass this way; This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be; He, too, must cross in the twilight dim -Good friend, I am building this bridge for him."

Just like the man in the poem, today the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation is building a bridge for youth. Our bridge is a bridge built by all alumni who contribute time or funds to further the vital work of the Foundation.

Our bridge is a bridge with five pathways upon which undergraduates may walk: (1)

The bridge path of ideas and training in leadership,

(2)

The bridge path of experience and development in business and career,

(3)

The bridge path of financial assistance in the form of scholarships, grants, loans,

(4)

The bridge path of outstanding character to develop better citizens, and,

(5)

The bridge path of brotherhood and religious encouragement.

I am certain every alumnus who has ever donated an hour or a dollar to the Foundation or the Fraternity feels much the same.

There were times as undergraduates that we were undecided as to which direction our college work would take; times when we encountered personal or social problems; times when we walked the fence between success and failure; times when our hopes seemed limited by our finances.

DR. DANIEL MARCELLUS Inventor? Dr. Daniel Marcellus of Psi Chapter, Cornell University, might not be Einstein, but he has made some notable advances in the world of communications. Dr. Marcellus, currently residing in Middletown, N.Y. and employed

by Decision Systems of Mahwah, New Jersey, undertook the development of a speech driven typing system. According to Dr. Marcellus this system prototype was made with a microcomputer, printer, keyboard and Cathode Ray Tube(CRT) all of which are commercially available components. His plan was to demonstrate that a practical speech driven typing system could be made. This system functioned by the user speaking slowly into a microphone and the words would appear on the CRT. When finished with the dictation the user could edit the text by the usual method of the keyboard. As soon as these two tasks are complete the text can be transfered automatically to the printed page through the computer's printer.

Dr. Marcellus contends that severe

problems arise with the change in the speed of speech, and estimates it will be another five years before a truly effective device of this nature will be available.

DR. GEORGE H. PORTER,III Humanitarian, accomplished physician, administrator and now he is the President of the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana. A 1958 graduate of

The Foundation provides funds for programs which are designated to guarantee undergraduates an opportunity to walk upon the bridge paths.

Each succeeding issue of the STAR AND LAMP will carry further information on the emerging role of the Foundation. Indeed, the Foundation will be the guiding force in Building the Bridge for Tomorrow's Pi Kapps.

Duke University Medical School, Dr. Porter was initiated into Mu Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity on December 14, 1951. Since that time Dr. Porter has met many a great challenge and reached those heights worthy of acclaim. After his graduation from Duke University, Dr. Porter studied at both Harvard and Washington Universities following which he served as senior resident physician at Boston's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and was a scholastic fellow in the humanities at Harvard. Also, for

three years Dr. Porter was associated with the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Health.

Dr. Porter's newest endeavor, which is the Foundation, is a $100 million enterprise, but he plans to stay in touch with his profession by practicing one half day a week.

This he feels will help him keep current with his basic ideal of a personal doctor-patient relationship.

All was left in the heart was the love for their own happiness and comfort. None of the members of the chapter had any thoughts of hope for their chapter; all were convinced that it was a lost cause. These guys, in their early contact with fraternity (the pledgeship) weren't given the necessary tools to prepare them for the hard times, but were forced to play humiliating games and had all types of pranks pulled on them.

Is this really worth fighting for?

Apparently not! The chapter was also lacking in "faith," which is the basis of all beliefs on earth. They had nothing to ensure them that brothers were behind them all the way, and would help them in any and every way to build the chapter again, because all they faced in "pledgeship" was ridicule, harassment, and constant prank-pulling by the active chapter.

Good Scholarship is reward in itself Each chapter of Pi Kappa Phi is entitled to have one of its members recognized as its "top" scholar. This individual chapter recognition of scholastic excellence is acknowledged by the Student Lamp Award.

This award is presented annually by Dr. Warren Robb, the Chairman of the National Education Committee.

The final finding of the coroner was that the chapter had only used the fraternity as a "retreat from society," and only wanted .to be entertained. All these final findings by the coroner were reinforced by the "pledgeship."

When I read the findings and studied the history of the chapter, I found that this was not a result of chapter size. This death occurred when it was at its zenith. The disease that caused the death of this chapter was inherited from past members and it's often referred to as "tradition: 'we did it and the pledges are going to have to do it.'"I refer to this disease in its most common vernacular as "hazing"; the coroner referred to it as "pledgeship" in his report. In some chapters both hazing and pledgeship are synonymous.

I once read a research paper on the subject of "hazing" and the author advised all doctors to place these chapters afflicted with the disease on the endangered species list, because they are rapidly disappearing from the face of the earth.

These chapters are disappearing because no longer are they able to reproduce and find others who want to carry on. No longer are they able to find "men" willing to put up with the harassment and ridicule that these chapters were putting "new members" through.

When I look over the principles of fraternalism, I see such things as brotherhood, service, scholarship, brotherly love, honest friendship, and others; but when I looked at this chapter's "pledgeship," I saw none of these principles being practiced or taught to the "new members."

In summation, I would like to say that all of us need to "get back to the basics" of fraternalism. Let's go back to the actual principles we were founded upon, and teach our new members the true value of the experience. Fraternity is brotherhood, fraternity is love, fraternity is teaching leadership skills and improvment of the minds of people.

Fraternity is authentic service to others; and fraternity is reaching out and caring about someone other than yourself.

race differs significantly from the Hollywood production. Purely amateur but not an intramural event, the race is sponsored by the Indiana University Student Foundation. The receipts from attendance, over 23,000 this year, traditionally go towards I.U. Foundation scholarships.

Both Greek and dormitory entrants historically have dominated the field, although independent teams are also eligible. Some sixty teams attempted to qualify this year.

Working against the clock, each team member rides one of four laps. The bike is "exchanged" on the run three times at an average speed of ten miles per hour.

I am pleased to report that, cornpeting in one of the strongest Greek environments in the nation, the Pi Kapps of Alpha Psi Chapter qualified seventh and finished second in this year's race. An unprecedented distinction complimented the finish as the entire team was individually selected to All-Star status. All team members were seniors and included Steve Smith (presently a Chapter Consultant), John Hayden, John Rosner, Jerry Solon and Mike Baccash, who broke his hand in a wreck during practice, thus greatly simplifying the task of choosing four riders

FORMER LAW DEAN MALONEY DIES Frank Edward Maloney, former Dean of the University of Florida law school and Pi Kappa Phi Merit Citation award winner is dead at 62.

Maloney was an initiate of Alpha Epsilon Chapter at the University of Florida and served the chapter as chapter advisor for many years. In recognition of his outstanding work for the fraternity he was awarded the Merit Citation by the National Council in 1968.

Maloney, born in Niagara Falls, New York, came to Gainesville as a law student after graduating from St. Michael's College of the University of Toronto with a philosophy degree. He earned his law degree in 1942 and was a graduate fellow at the Columbia University School of Law in 1951.

He retired as Dean in 1970 and had been a full time law professor since then. A retired Air Force colonel, Maloney was an authority on water and environmental law.

GRANT PALSG ROVE, MR. PI KAPPA PHI PASSES AWAY Dr. Grant Palsgrove, an initiate of Alpha Tau Chapter at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute died late Spring. Brother Palsgrove was a charter member of the Alpha Tau Chapter and served the chapter as its chapter advisor for many years.

He was also instrumental in the original purchase and subsequent occupancy of the "castle," the Alpha Tau chapter house. Previously recognized by the fraternity with the Merit Citation award in 1956, Brother Palsgrove was granted the fraternity's greatest honor in being designated Mr. Pi Kappa Phi in 1976. Known by his fraternity brothers and students as "The Prof," his counsel and friendship influenced all who have had the fortune to know him.

The second place finish was no fluke. The past three years, besides winning the team sportsmanship award each year, the Pi Kapps have commanded respect at the track. Finishing third in 1978, just twenty yards behind the winner, and ninth in a wreck marred race in 1979, our consistent presence in the top ten is a credit to dedication and hard work. Beginning in January,a dynamic workout schedule culminating with race day is enacted.

Jim Pivarnik is the author of this schedule. Working towards his Ph.D. in human performance, we should be calling him Dr. "Piv" in a few years. He has ridden in three races (not including the movie, which most everyone had the good fortune of riding in) and coached in three. Chances are when he writes his first book, the riders will get mentioned, along with all his other guinea pigs!

enjoyed DeLand for the past three spring breaks (one-half hour from Daytona Beach). The fraternity we shared will not be forgotten, especially the power kegs!

Next year everyone in the nation will get a taste of the Little 500 because a three year contract with ABC Sports has been signed to carry the race live. Maybe ABC was waiting for the new stadium to be built? It is expected to be complete by next spring. This year, the 30th race, was the last to be run in the old football stadium. Be watching this fall for the Pi Kapps on Real People (in blue with navy

sleeves). Hopefully they will "print" our huddle before the race. Also, our mechanic's table may grab its very own spot as they were interested in it. But, for sure, check out the race the last weekend in April.

I can't imagine Jim Pivarnik talking to Jackie Stewart about the third turn or something!

A few years back,Playboy magazine rated Little 500 the "World's Greatest College Weekend." It still is, but it's not so little anymore.

Florida pushes for "A Mile of Pennies" Alpha Epsilon Chapter at the University of Florida led the nation for the 1979-80 school year in fund raising for Project P.U.S.H. with the development of an exciting "Mile of Pennies" concept. The chapter set a goal to raise a "Mile of Pennies" which is approximately $880.00, but in actuality raised more than three miles of pennies totaling over $3,100. To date this is the highest total ever raised by a chapter in the brief history of Project P.U.S.H. The chapter conducted an extensive campaign with the local media to publicize the fund raiser. Local newspapers, radio and television stations and businesses were enthuiastic in their support through the donation of T-shirts and extensive media coverage.

The event culminated on a Friday and Saturday with the solicitation of businesses and individuals at street corners and shopping malls.

Whole intersections were blanketed with brothers asking citizens to help support the severely handicapped.

Mike Willis, Archon, stated, "This was one of the most rewarding, unifying, and motivating experiences for our chapter. The chapter was sky-high for weeks afterwards — and still is!"

Much of the credit goes to Tom Berens, Alpha Epsilon Service Chairman, in his untiring efforts to bring about the fund raiser. In recognition of his efforts, the National Council of Pi Kappa Phi awarded Tom a Resolution of Appreciation.

Hats off to the brothers and pledges of Alpha Epsilon for their pacesetting support of Project P.U.S.H.
