Mid-Year Leadership Conferences promote new ideas and offer a peek at new White Diamond

Star Lamp

In This Issue Values/Ethics - As our society becomes increasingly more diverse, is our language becoming more restricted? What is "Politically Correct" in the fraternity world? page 3

Alumni Center - The Fraternity welcomes three members to the family: a new Area Governor, Chapter Advisor and an "environmental" alumnus initiate. Meet these new brothers! page 4

Foundation - It's that time of the year again! Pi Kappa Phi thanks all those who have given to our Fraternity in a special pull-out section. page 5

From a participation standpoint, it was one of the best Mid-Year Leadership Conferences ever. Five hundred seventy-six brothers from 130 chapters traveled to Charlotte and St. Louis for a two day "nuts and bolts" leadership seminar. The event allows new officers to become familiar with their jobs and old officers a chance to share new ideas. The event also offered a peek at the new White Diamond. More than 2,000 copies of the new book have been sold to chapters and alumni since January 23, 1991. Foundation Director of Educational Programs T.J. Sullivan spent six months researching and writing the new associate member manual which is now available in a blue, hard cover edition. "The White Diamond is filled with fresh, new ideas that I think is really going to boost member education programs everywhere," Sullivan said. "The book itself really sets Pi Kappa Phi apart from other fraternities as well." The conference hosted the Archon, Vice Archon, Treasurer, Warden and PUSH Chairman from each chapter. Each had the opportunity to meet with other officers to discuss current topics facing the undergraduate chapters. Other topics that were presented were the importance of chapter scholarship, PUSH and the state of the Fraternity

illustrated by Executive Director Durward Owen, Asst. Executive Director Glenn Dickson and Sullivan. Sacramento St.'s David Fitzhugh received the "endurance award." His two day bus trip to St. Louis became fraternity legend when the man seated next to him on the bus died in his seat! He also had his luggage lost in the process!

When an alumnus makes a contribution to the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation, he makes these types of leadership events possible for the undergraduate chapters to continue the Pi Kapp tradition. The next major leadership school will be Pi Kapp College August 15-18, 1991 at the College of Charleston, our founding, in Charleston, S.C.

Pi Kapp leads all Army forces against Iraq As the threat of a ground war draws closer in the Gulf crisis, the United States will soon be turning to Lt. General John Yeosock to lead the assault to, in the words of Pres. George Bush, "liberate" Kuwait from Iraq. Lt. Gen. Yeosock is a Pi Kapp from Alpha Mu-Penn. St. Chapter. Yeosock commands all 280,000 U.S. Army forces in Saudi Arabia, and should a ground assault commence, Yeosock will be the principal commander on-scene. Yeosock (a three-star general) reports directly to Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf who reports to Bush. Brother John Yeosock's present assignment is Deputy Commanding General, United States Forces Command, Third United States Army (Commander,ARCENT, Desert Storm). He has been stationed in Saudi Arabia since August 1990. The territory is familiar to Yeosock

who spent two years from June 1981-83 as a project manager for the Saudi Arabian National Guard Modernization. Yeosock, with 31 years of active service, graduated from Penn. St. with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. Yeosock has been stationed in Washington, D.C., Ft. Bliss, TX, Ft. Knox, KY, Ft. Hood. TX, Korea, and Vietnam. On March 16, 1989, Yeosock was promoted to Lieutenant General. His the U.S. decorations include Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device, Meritorious Service Award, Army Commendation Medal and numerous other badges. The Fraternity salutes Lt. Gen. John Yeosock as well as the many other Pi Kapps-in-Arms (see page 7).

abled" are now "differently-abled." Some who were "women" now prefer the less-sexually biased spelling "womyn" or "persyn." "Students of color" is correct. "Colored students" is not. For those not exposed to this movement on a daily basis, it might seem extremely silly. To those exposed to prejudice regularly, it might seem long overdue. The "P.C." Movement is extremely strong, particularly on American campuses because those who went to school in the Sixties are now emerging into power as professors and administrators. The fervorfor"P.C."within the educational world is tremendous — even if"politically correct" has yet to emerge as a household term — and the call to right generations of bias through the current educational process has become the greatest bandwagon movement since the Viet Nam peace protests. Consider this example published in The Wall Street Journal on November 26, 1990."Next month the annual meeting of the Modern Language Association, the professional organization for the English and Humanities Departments, will offer a host ofscholarly panels... Where once scholarly papers were offered on Shakespeare, Marlowe, Donne, Yeats and other such male Eurocentric oppressors, today's MLA panels offer'The Lesbian Phallus — or Does Heterosexuality Exist?' and 'Strategies for Feminist Team Teaching of Hispanic Women Writers'." Colleges all over the country are adding educational requirements stressing "multiculturalism," or the appreciation for the myriad ofcultural influences existing in modern America. While calculus might still be an elective for an English student,"Psychological Writings of Latin American Gay and Lesbian Authors" might not. There is vocal opposition to the P.C. Movement from both "conservatives" and "liberals." One noted "liberal" essayist, who is black, recently said, "If you sensitize people from day one to look at everything in terms of race and sex, eventually they will see racism and sexism at the root of everything, and not all the problems

Handicapped" is blatantly out of line with current "P.C." vocabulary. Meanwhile, our chapters nationwide are feeling the effects of the "politically correct" at whatever speed their college environment dictates. Kevin Lee, archon at Lambda Chapter, University of Georgia, had not heard of the "P.C." movement despite its considerable media attention. Georgia is considered extremely conservative and less multi-cultural than many other universities. At the University of TexasAustin, the situation is quite different. The campus is more "liberal"(most would argue), and "P.C." is a more common topic of conversation. "This year, we recruited six members from Turkey," said Mark Flowers, Vice Archon at the Zeta ThetaTexas Chapter. "The big buzzword here is `multiculturalism.' I don't know that we would have been as likely to embrace members of other cultures two years ago." This year Zeta Theta actively rushed members of the campus' international business club."We have definitely become more open-minded," Flowers said."And, it's definitely a good thing. We are learning to appreciate differences in one another." "We have definitely heard of P.C.," said Frank Wrenn, past archon of Mu Chapter at Duke University. "You can't say the word 'girl' around here without someone jumping down your throat."

New Orleans, the group overwhelmingly passed a controversial resolution encouraging its members to actively fight "heterosexism" and "homophobia" in fraternity and sorority chapters. The conflict is apparent, but then so is the potential for change. Three years ago I watched my own chapter blackball its most active associate member because he was suspected of having a homosexual orientation. This year, I am not sure that a similar situation would go the same way.In fact, two collegiate chapters this year agreed (not unanimously)to allow a member who had"come out of the closet" to remain a member in full standing. Those on the "right" might be amazed. Those on the"left" might question why a man's sexual orientation is an unwritten exemption from brotherhood. The U.S. military itself has come under fire in the last year for it "politically incorrect" exclusion of people of homosexual orientation. Regardless of your personal stance, the fact is that our fraternity is learning to question its long-defended ability to informally discriminate. Despite the fact that many black ("African-American") men are dealt harsh criticism from their peers for joining predominantlywhite fraternities, we are put under considerable pressure to go to greater lengths to recruit black members.By doing so, we can avoid the "politically incorrect" appearance of an all-white ("Eurocentric") organization. Then, take something as seemingly untouchable as our national outreach project, PUSH. The "P.C." Movement has had an effect there also. This year, the PUSH staff will actively campaign for our collegiates to reach out to potential members who are disabled ("differentlyabled"). At a recent conference, collegiates were reminded that they are "temporarily able-bodied" because at their age they are more likely to become disabled than to die. It is a lesson in being "P.C." Perhaps in the near future, the board of PUSH will be forced to examine the organization's name. After all, the last word in "People Understanding the Severely

:. .,„. 10, V

Student reaction to the movement is mixed. Some mock the fervent movement. Students at Brown University enjoy the exploits of"P.C. Man,"a comic strip character who desperately attempts to become sensitized despite the fact that he is male, white and "straight." In one strip,"P.C. Man" — complete with cape — laments the fact that his attempts to empathize with the struggles of the black woman might land him a guest spot on Geraldo. "P.C." challenges nearly all tradition. In its extreme application it is mental censorship — a way to begin understanding the culture of victimization our history and language has allegedly perpetuated. Many universities are forcing students to sacrifice their freedom of expression in favor of proactive "expressed" tolerance. Amusingly, many of those promoting self-censorship for the "politically correct" were among those protesting in the Sixties for greater freedom of expression. Some call it "The New McCarthyism." Instead of Americans watching what they say and do for fear of being called a"Communist," many oftoday's Americans are changing the way the speak to avoid labels like "racist," "anti-Semitist,""homophobic," and "sexist." "P.C." will affect each of us differently, if at all, but it provides a powerful lesson. While we might dislike the bandwagon fervor that our country's educators have created,it is also possible to appreciate the positive effects which could potentially win out when the fervor has ended. History tells us that our children will be more tolerant of diversity than we are, for certainly time and enlightenment have made us more tolerant than our parents. It is possible that "Political Correctness" is simply the latest step in that long, difficult process. But that is probably a "liberal" point of view.

ALUMNI CE Area X gets new governor After almost a year without an Area Governor's leadership, chapters in Area Ten have a new commander. Aaron Crane, an Alpha Zeta-Oregon State alum was appointed as the •new Area Governoron January8,1991. Within a month, Crane has already established goals for his area. "I want to help the younger chapters establish themselves on the West coast as well as assisting the chapters manage the new FIPG policies,"Crane said. He also added that it will be difficult managing his chapters from his home in Corvallis, Oregon, but it's a challenge that excites him. "I have always enjoyed meeting new people and this will be a great way to do it," Crane said. "My driving force will be that I want to help chapters in areas that I struggled through when I was an undergraduate." Crane's first task was familiarizing himself with the numerous WestCoast chapters by attending the Area X Conclave Feb 1-2, 1991. Foundation Director of Educational Programs T.J. Sullivan and Director of Expansion Todd Field assisted him. "I was impressed with the quality of guys that came to conclave," Crane

said. "They are sharp people with creative ideas." Crane works in Corvallis as Controller for the Good Samaritan Hospital. His duties include managing the accounting department, hospital budget and reimbursement procedures. He has worked there for 11 months. He has a younger brother,Jeff, who is a Pi Kapp.

The Brothers of Slippery Rock University held their 1990 retreat the weekend of November 2,1990,at the hunting lodge of Leonard A.Green near Dent's Run,Pa. During this retreat, the Epsilon Psi Brothers initiated Mr. Green into the brotherhood. Green is the founder of a series of youth county conservation camps throughout Pennsylvania, Immediate Past Chairman of the Board of the National Wildlife Federation, and a member of numerous environmental groups. In 1956, Green, with the belief, "we are notgoing to enjoy or have the wildlife if something is not done to educate the younger generations aboutconservation measures," organized the first junior conservation camp in Butler, Pa. The Butler County Junior Conservation School was the beginning of 22 County Youth Conservation Camps throughout the state of Pennsylvania. According to Brother Green, these camps educate the participants, youths between the ages of 14-17,about ways to become conservationally-minded and environmentally aware. "The younger generations are, indeed, a good place to begin the quest to saving the environment," Green said. Currently, Green serves as the Pennsylvania Fish Commission Vice President. In 1987,he was elected National Wildlife Federation Chairman. He is also on the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Board of Trustees. The chapter offered Green an "alumni initiate" bid which he formally accepted with the initiation into Pi Kappa Phi.

50 years of brotherhood times two! On January 18, 1991, Director of Communications Matt Basta presented Thorton (left) and James (right) Crouch with their Golden Legions in their hometown Hartsville, SC. Thorton and James are twins that were initiated into Zeta Chapter at Wofford College Jan. 20, 1941. James was initiated as #232 and Thorton #233.

Alumni appreciated for their hard work to the Fraternity The National Council passed numerous resolutions of appreciation at its Feb.8-9,1991,meeting in Charlotte. They are as follows: John Kirk,Psi-Cornell,for his work with Beta Delta-Drake Chapter and its housing corporation. Mario Gioia, Gamma Lambda-Missouri-Rolla, for outstanding service as president of the Gamma Lambda Housing Corp. Bob Wartelle and Alex Adair, Alpha Delta-Washington, for special efforts to secure additional housing for the Alpha Delta Chapter. Dean Schillito,Beta EpsilonMissouri, for good work with the Beta

Epsilon Housing Corp. David Vawter, Alpha ZetaOregon St., for presentations at the Mid-Year Leadership Conference. Jay Stuckel, Beta EpsilonMissouri, for service at the Mid-Year Leadership Conference. Daniel Bosshart, GammaCal.-Berkeley,for outstanding service to the interfraternity community at Berkeley and as Chapter Advisor for Gamma Chapter. The Omega Alumni Oversight and Alpha Alumni Oversight Committees were recognized by the Council. All resolutions were passed unanimously.

With years of experience as a physician and with Pi Kappa Phi, Dr. William Bosworth was appointed as Gamma Chi-Jacksonville's new Chapter Advisor. Bosworth, a Beta Lambda-Tampa alumnus, has been a physician in general and family medicine for the past 16 years. Bosworth works for the Family Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla., handling acute and primary medical care. He is also serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve in the Medical Corps. "Pi Kappa Phi can help provide a brotherhood of friends in the various areas of college activities which serves as a home away from home," Bosworth said. One of Bosworth's "hobbies" is his passion for basketball. In 1990, he played on the National Masters Basketball Championship team in the 55 and over category. Bosworth also has actively served in the Rotary International Club. He says Pi Kappa Phi has assisted him in developing his career. "It is a part of the natural development every young person should experience," he added.

Housing Corporations have been designated as Distinguished Foundation Fellows for 1990. A Distinguished Foundation Fellow contributes at least $1,000 in support for the Foundation's educational programs. In addition, 22 men who have given atleast $500 have been recognized as Foundation Fellows (see next page). "These men have matched their extraordinary contributions to Pi Kappa Phi with their most generous financial support," Dr. James B. Edwards, Chairman of the Foundation's Board of Trustees said. "Every contribution to the Foundation is important. However, it is these larger contributions which provide the ability to support major new educational programsfor our 7,000 student members. Each Fellow has earned the geniune appreciation of the Fraternity because of their philanthropy in 1990." The Distinguished Foundation Fellows are:

New 'Circle' of brothers charters in 1990 The National President's Circle welcomed its charter class of145 students from across the country in 1990. In order to be eligible for this select organization, a student must have been elected to a leadership position in his chapter, attended a National Leadership event and paid a membership fee of $15 a year. Further, the student pledges to contribute at least $50 a year as an alumnus in support of the Foundation educational programs. National President Stephen DePalma noted the special contribution of these student leaders to the development of Pi Kappa Phi. DePalma spoke to the membership attheinauguralluncheon

at Pi Kapp College. "Each of you have made a difference in your chapter by virtue of your leadership and involvement," DePalma said. "Now, you have set the tone and example for generations of students to come. Your extraordinary contributions to Pi Kappa Phi will mean much as we grow into the Nineties," Brother DePalma has agreed to match the contributions from student members while he holds office. In 1990, almost $5,000 was contributed to the Foundation in the name ofthe President's Circle. For a complete listing of brothers, see page VII.

PROPER How can your chapter obtain its dream house? Pi Kappa Phi Properties,Inc., the national housing corporation of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, exists to assist undergraduate chapters and their local alumni housing corporations in obtaining competitive housing. Properties hasassisted approximately 25-percent of the Pi Kapp chapters from coast-to-coast. At present Properties owns and manages the following houses: Gamma-California-Berkeley Alpha Gamma-Oklahoma Alpha Eta-Samford Alpha Omicron-Iowa State Alpha Theta-Michigan State Beta Delta-Drake Beta Phi-East Carolina Gamma Delta-Memphis State Gamma Epsilon-W. Carolina Delta Chi-Kansas State Because of Properties' tax status, Properties can only own and hold title to the real estate with which it becomes involved. Properties does not provide second mortgage money or guaranty loans for local housing

corporations. Pi Kappa Phi Proper-. ties does offer to the local housing corporations expertise involving financing, insurance, legal and tax matters, as well as day-to-day management suggestions. Properties' financial position, implicit in its asset strength, portfolio status, and credit rating, gives Properties a natural advantage to most individual alumni or housing corporations in the ability to package attractive fraternal housing facilities in the current market. Pi Kappa Phi Properties' primary interest is to provide the opportunity to secure competitive housing where needed. Properties tries to provide a bridge between the current situation and the future when the local alumni housing corporation will be able to own and operate the chapter house itself. The chapter houses in Athens, Ga., and Troy, N.Y., were recently sold to their housing corporations at below market prices. A sale is pending to sell the Berkeley property to the Gamma alumni and a new property at Indiana University has been purchased.

Pi Kappa Phi Properties Organization Every member location of Pi Kappa Phi Properties, Inc., has an appointed alumnus from its local housing corporation to serve as its representative and member of the Board of Directors. This Board meets every biennium to review the operation and policy decisions that have been authorized by the Board'selected group of professionals, the Executive Committee. ThisCommittee provides the constant and ongoing direction for Pi Kappa Phi's housing objectives and needs. The Executive Committee meets quarterly and employs a fulltime, paid administrator who is responsible for the day-to-day management of Pi Kappa Phi Properties. The current administrator is Dr.Frank M. Parrish, an alumnus of Alpha Omicron-Iowa State. Soliciting Pi Kappa Phi Properties Assistance It is the responsibility of the local alumni housing corporation,

Administrator can be an asset to housing drive One of the keys to a successful chapter is having competitive housing. Often local alumni groups are faced with the problem of needing to raise a substantial amountof money to support a housing purchase or major remodeling. With the addition of Frank Parrish as the administrator for Pi Kappa Phi Properties, Properties wants to provide additional resources for the local alumni housing corporations especially in the area of fundraising. Pi Kappa Phi Properties can provide three levels of assistance to local housing corporations concerning fundraising programs and activities. The first level would be provided to the local housing corporations at a minimal or no cost. The second and third level would require the local housing corporation to sign a contract with Pi Kappa Phi Properties, and the cost would be related to the amountof time and expenses anticipated. Facilitator The Properties administrator can assist local alumni housing corporations as a facilitator for getting a basicfundraising program underway. This would include assisting the local alumni in the development of goals, objectives and operating procedures for their fundraising campaign, assisting the alumni in developing an understanding of basic fundraising concepts and techniques, and finally, serving via telephone as a general resource for housing and fundraising

information. Coordinator If the housing corporation required more assistance, then the Properties administrator could serve as the coordinator for developing the housing project. In addition to acting as the facilitator, this level would include reviewing and analyzing the proposed project, developing different financing options, coordinating drawings, specifications, design work, analyzing the fundraising capability of the alumni, identifying and recruiting alumni leadership, and other activities as necessary to provide the local alumni with a completed housing and fundraising program. Campaign Developer As the Campaign Developer, the Properties administrator would develop and manage the campaign with the assistance of the local alumni housing corporation. This would include developing data base information, developing campaign literature, managing fundraising events and activities, recruiting alumni and other activities necessary to run the campaign. Pi Kappa Phi Properties and Pi Kappa Phi Foundation are developing a library ofcampaign literature, programs, videotapes and other materials relating to fraternity fundraising programs by Pi Kappa Phi and other fraternities. This material is available for review by contacting Properties or the Foundation.

participating with the members of their undergraduate chapter, to determine their chapter's needs and make the plans to effectively meet these needs. The alumni must first decide if they themselves can arrange financing for the housing needs. Pi Kappa Phi Properties will assist local alumni in making this determination. If the alumni housing corporation decides that they cannot meet the housing needs with their resources then they can submit a request to Pi Kappa Phi Properties for consideration. There is a detailed application process and review that is required before a decision is made by Properties. Some of the factors that are important to the decision are: 1. Chapter viability, 2. Housing corporation viability, 3. Structural viability of the property,4. Economic viability of the purchase, and finally local zoning requirements or limitations. Detailed information concerning the application process is available by writing 7742 S. Harrison Cir., Littleton, CO 80122 or call(303) 773-8344.

Iowa State Chapter adopts 'Kids' This spring,PUSH's "Kids on the Block" have found a new home. The five life-sized puppets will be residing at407 Welch Avenue in Ames,Ia.,site ofthe Alpha Omicron Chapter atIowa State University. Alpha Omicron was selected from many interested chapters to pilot this expansion ofPUSH's Kidson the Block program. According to Ken Kaiser, Executive Director,"Taking the Kids on the Block program to the chapter level is certainly a challenge, but it definitely represents the future of this program. Alpha Omicron demonstrated the commitment and dedication necessary to take on this challenge." The chapter puppeteers, Mike Penningroth,Rob Tietzand Mike Derr, will visit elementary schools in the Ames area throughout the semester. In addition to a full-load of classes, the team will perform twice-a-week to third graders. With success stories from this semester to pave the road for future chapters, PUSH hopes eventually to launch several chapter-sponsored programs in addition to the traveling team. Applications are now being accepted for the fall chapter team and the traveling team. Those interested should contact thePUSH office at 704522-PUSH (7874).

PUSH America doubles its journey! Some of the story will remain the same. A team of Pi Kapps, after raising over $4,000 each to qualify, will cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge to begin a 3,400 mile "Journey of Hope." But something about the '91 team will be different. This time... there will be two! After leaving San Francisco on June 17, one team of 25 will cycle to Washington D.C.on the route paved in '89 and again in '90. A second team will simultaneously tour a route from San Francisco to Charleston,S.C.,crossing some of the roads pedaled by the pioneer PUSH America team in '88. According to Sally Schafer,PUSH's Director of Development and PUSH America Coordinator, the response by collegiate members of the Frater-

nity to participate in PUSH America '91 was "overwhelming." "After three successful years, the project has grown up,and we decided to offer the experience to twice as many people while doubling the awareness efforts they undertake," Schafer said. Throughout the summer, both teams participate in many educational, fundraising and other special events in various cities. Each team will cycle an average of75 miles a day. "The real story is the message they bring when they get there," she said. Plans are now being made for the team's stops in cities along the route. Alumni and chapters are encouraged to get involved. Contact the PUSH Office at(704)522-7874 if you would like more information.

Chapter Spotlight Starting off with a Bang! The Epsilon Alpha AC at Elon College was recolonized only last November and already has raised $2,000! They held a "Toll Road" upon returning to school after winter break and definitely started on the right foot! Give it a shot. it doesn't hurt! We are happy to report that the collegiate members of OmicronAlabama have begun a volunteer relationship with the Regional

EducationalCenterin Tuscaloosa. The center is a learning facility for 10-15 year old children. "Many of the members were apprehensive at first, but they all returned with a very positive reaction," reports past PUSH Chairman, Matt White. The chapter hasrounded outitsPUSH program with car washes and parent solicitations and have raised $1,243.00 in the process. Get your Hot Dogs... This is becoming a familiar phrase around the Charlotte Coliseum. The Epsilon EtaWinthrop Chapter has been selling concessions for Charlotte Hornets games. They make a percentage of what they sell and all funds that they make are donated to PUSH. Archon Jim Stephenson says that the chapter enjoys the work it is doing for PUSH,but the best part is getting into the games for free!! It's an Atlanta Thing... Pi Kappa Phi chapters in the Atlanta area have recently initiated a spring fundraising campaign. The Iota-Georgia Tech, Epsilon Kappa-Southern Tech, Beta Kappa AC-Georgia State, and Kennesaw State ACchapters will be busy this spring raising funds that are "earmarked" for the REACH (Rehabilitation & Education, for Adults and Children)Center in Atlanta. Empathy Training Taking Hold Many chapters are experimenting with sponsoring a campus empathy training session. Zeta Chi-Albright, Zeta XiAverett and Queens AC chapters have sponsored Empathy Training sessions for their campuses, while plans are in the works for the Beta Eta-Florida State Chapter to do the same.

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT Alpha Eta Chapter returns to Samford University After an absence of almost 12 months, the Alpha Eta Chapter at Samford reopened its doors as an official Pi Kapp chapter. The re-activation offered 31 new men on January 26, 1991, the chance to carry on the ideals and values of Alpha Eta and Pi Kappa Phi. In February of 1990, the National Council with a recommendation from Samford pulled the charter from Alpha Eta. The Administrative Office convinced Samford to allow the chapter to open again only if they recruited all new officers and members. The chapter rebounded with flying colors. With the efforts of Chapter Advisor Mark Perrin(Alpha Kappa-Michigan), the chapter

achieved active status in less than 12 months. The weekend culminated with the traditional chartering banquet with NationalSecretary Nathan Hightower serving as the chartering officer and Assistant Executive Director Glenn Dickson helping Hightower with the weekend. The brothers from Epsilon Delta-Auburn-Montgomery initiated Alpha Eta. Mr. Pi Kappa Phi 1990 Frank Hawthorne attended the festivities as well. "Our purpose is to establish a tradition of love, wisdom and strength of character growing closer to our Lord, impacting our world and pursuing a brotherhood of excellence," said brother Chris Wilson.

War and scholarship funds highlight letters to the editor

How has Pi Kappa Phi helped you in the 'real world'?

Thefollowing are excerptsfrom a letter from Karl "Trey" Long who is currently serving our country in Saudi Arabia. Trey,a brother at Sigma-South Carolina Chapter, responded to letter written by Executive Director Durward Owen. ...As you well know, support from others is the key to any endeavor. To me,this is the pure essence of fraternity. Supportofbrothersisgood, and bad times allows us to flourish and grow closer to the better people we all hope to be. Not until the moment I read your letter did I fully realize how important the Fraternity could be to me as an established adult. In fact, the letter served as a reminder of all the wonderful experiences Pi Kappa Phi has provided over the years. This, let me once again say, thanks, for recognizing a potential need of my family. Luckily, though, I only ask that you continue remembering usin your thoughts and prayers. This is an experience of a lifetime, as I feel the Fraternity is for a lifetime. Your letter just restored my confidence in that belief! Please tell your staff I am well and wish all the best. Hopefully, my precious son Sims will one day join us as brothers, as I intend to pass forward the ideals and values represented by Pi Kappa Phi.

After graduating from N.C. State in May,I have been in the"real world" now for about six months. I picked up my life and moved to a different region of the country to start with one of the nation's largest corporations. Although I have found that most people with whom I work are Greek, few had a Greek experience as impactful as my own. Specifically, many of the leadership principles I learned and applied at my local chapter and at Pi Kapp national conferences are stressed and applied in my new environment.Such concepts as: constructive, positive, team-oriented styles, inspiring others to "buy into" ideas, open-minded ideas for progressive change and valuing diversity in the organization. Many of these and others are "new approach'es" being brought into America's business schools and cor-

In the next issue... ...More details on the 43rd Supreme Chapter. ...Back to the basics of getting an education: scholarship and you. ...Pi Kappa Phi: past, present and future. Page 8

Dear Mr. DePalma: I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond to this, but I've been training for a war which has finally come. I hope this money will help future chapters. Pi Kappa Phi has taught me a lot about life and myself. As I leave for Saudi Arabia on Jan. 23rd.,I want you'll at the National Headquarters that not a day will go by that I do not think of Pi Kappa Phi. Thank you! Yours in Pi Kappa Phi Chris Moore Delta Beta-North Georgia 325 I am enclosing a check for $1,000 to the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation for the Scholarship Fund at the Alpha Omicron Chapter at Iowa State University. This is in memory of my late husband, James Hilton Ring. Please list the donor as "Helen M. Ring and family" to include my five children. Jim enjoyed the friends he made in Pi Kappa Phi for all of his life, and would have been very honored to be remembered by them with this scholarship fund. He was a consulting engineer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for many years, so it would be most appropriate that some of this fund be used to establish a scholarship for an engineering student atIowa St. Jim contributed to the building fund for the new chapter house several years ago,and came to the participatein the groundbreaking ceremony. I think great credit should be given to H.A. Cowles who kept many of the brothersinformed aboutactivitiesand encouraged them all to be involved. Thank you for handling these funds. I hope that they will continue to grow and be a living memorial for Jim. Sincerely, Helen M.Ring Elm Grove, Wisconsin

porations to which I was previously exposed through Pi Kappa Phi. I have seen them exemplified to success in my chapter, and stressed continually in corporate training classes and on the job. However, the biggest contribution of my Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity experience to my ability to make the adjustment lies in the continuing friendships I now cherish. My best friends in the world, fraternity brothers, are dispersed in varying fields across the entire country. Theirsupport hasbeen priceless as we all make the radical transitionfrom college. Additionally, I met the woman with whom I am spending the rest of my life at my first "pledge party" at Pi Kappa Phi. Sincerely, Christopher L. Baucom Tau Chapter #781

Fraternity teaches accepting diversity After working in the "real world" for only seven months,it is very easy to answer the question,"how has Pi Kappa Phi helped me in the 'real world'?" When you are an undergraduate, you have this great idea of what the working world will be like, but when you are a graduate, you get a shock when you see whatthe working world is really like. Being part of an organization in college is a great idea, however when you join most collegiate clubs you are asked to deal with one type of person. When you join a fraternity, you join a group that has a variety of people, with a variety of interests in it. Although the chapter may have a cornmon link, everybody is different. This is what has taught me the most. Having for the first time to deal with different types of people, I was confused and often depressed when things did not go the way I wanted,

but quickly, I learned that no two people are alike and that we all have not just different likes, but opinions and reactions to different things. In the real world it is smaller. Dealing with people that are both older and younger, more educated and less educated, richer or poorer, than myself and with different personalities than myself is a daily activity. It was my yearsasan undergraduate brother ofPi Kappa Phi thattaught me how to do this, and the only way was hands on. I know this sounds like your parents talking, but it is when you enter the real world that you realize everything your parents ever told you was true. Fraternally, Richard Yoegel Zeta Nu-West Chester #22 PUSH Chairman of the Year 1989
