PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY

WINTER 1992

How do you know they don't? Durward W. Owen It was one of those perfect days in the

mountains of North Carolina. The fall season with all of its spectacular color was probably at its peak. The air was mountain clear and had a tip of frost in its stillness. All was well in God's world. Pi Kappa Phi wanted me to explore a possible national project and Dr. Iverson Riddle, Director of Western Carolina Center, a state-full service location for people with retardation, had insisted that I meet one of his employees. Thethoughtwas that Thomas Hart Sayre had an idea which was so far lateral that this state-financed institution could not attempt to implement. A fraternity? Maybe! Thomas and I had spent the better part of the day discussing his concept of play and the importance of child play in the early development of the "normal" person. And how sound, texture, smell elevation, touch, and light were all part of learning through play. And I was impressed. We walked up the hill to see some of the outside objects Thomas had created for "play" activities. Activities which might improve the life of these so very unfortunate and undeveloped (physically and mentally) human beings. Around us were 20 or 30 people of ages 5 to perhaps 25. Most were in some form of restraint, usually including football helmet looking headgear: Crutches were a bun-

dant, as were wheelchairs. Conversation and noise were mostly grunts, shrill sounds, garbled voices and an occasional recognizableword. Of our beautiful "normal" people, these certainly were not. Not a happy scene for me, from the "normal world." As I soaked in the beauty ofthe South Mountains, perhaps attempting to ignore those unusual human beings surrounding me, I remarked to Thomas, "Isn't it a shame they cannot enjoy this beautiful vista as we are doing?" Thomas simply said, "How do you know they don't?" And PUSH was born, for I didn' t know! Thomas and I proceeded to see if we could find out, and if perhaps Pi Kappa Phi would be able to make a difference for these very special people. We did and we have. Can you make a difference in Pi Kappa Phi? Can you become a Chapter Ad visor and make a difference in the lives of our special young men, our members? Can you contribute of your assets to the Foundation and make a difference in the scholarship monies available for deserving students? You know that I can ask other similar questions while seeking your involvement with Pi Kappa Phi. And then when our student members ask, "Why don't our alumni care about Pi Kappa Phi?", I can respond, "How do you know they don't."

For a growing majority of young college men, sexual activity is as much a part of the college experience as chemistry and intramurals. For better or for worse, decisions about sex- whether or not to do it, with whom, where, how and when - are thought about, and talked about among close friends and

for which we are each supposedly destined. Unwanted pregnancy was once the greatest negative consequence for young men thinking with the wrong organ. Today, our young fraternity men are part of the nation's fastestgrowing HIV +populationyoung, sexually-active heterosexuals. Today, we do

near strangers. Each man's sexual history certainly will be different. Some will abstain. Some will fall in love for the first time, make a thoughtful progression and engage in responsible, romantic sex. A large number will chart their progress via crowded bars, top bunks and embarrassing sexual blunders in their search for the one earth-shaking act

not "woo young women into submission," we walk the line of date rape. Today, some of our young men from broken families or those dealing with a sexual-orientation issue are unable to build respecting, loving sexual relationships and turn instead to easy, self-demeaning, chemically-induced sex as a sub-

stitute. "Sex Under the Influence." Very often, we break down the big issue into its various consequences: date rape, sexually-transmitted diseases, self-esteem problems, pregnancy, reputations. Too seldom do we address the real root of many of these problems. American men, young and old, consider alcohol a neeessary part of the romantic and sexual experience. The purists might see the answer very simply. Our greatest tool is the Nancy Reagan-quick-fix, "JustSay No." If our students were abstaining from pre-marltal sex and alcohol abuse (particularly before they are of legal age), there would not be an issue. The purists run head-first into their corners toting "family values" while college rape statistics climb. Then come the educators armed with therealstatistics. According to a survey by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta late last year, 40% of all Ameri-

6

can ninth-graders, 48% of tenth-graders, 57% of eleventh-graders, and 72% of all twelveth-graders have had sex. The percentage is higher overall for young men than young women. For all the facts, for all the figures, one truth remains in effect. Drinking makes everything seem "easier." It becomes easier to dance, easier to introduce yourself to someone you don't know, easier to talk, to laugh, and to play off those awkward moments. Magically, women can seem much more "available" when everyone has a buzz on. Suddenly, it's OK to act out of character. Alcohol helps a young man forget about the many things that might otherwise make him nervous. Is she really attracted to me or is she just flirting? What's the right way to approach her? Is she going to make me feel like an idiot? What was it I heard about her? While each man is waiting for that perfect romantic scenerio with "Miss Right," alcohol is the friend aiding in the search for "Miss RightNow." The problem is that the use of alcohol- particularly too much alcohol- as a substitute for real comfort puts a young man at risk much greater than he realizes, physcially and emotionally. When they drink to make things easier, sometimes things just get more difficult, maybe not at that moment, but often afterwards. It's time that we, as caring alumni and as caring undergraduate brothers, end the awkward silence and begin talking openly

about what we are doing as individuals and as groups to minimize the dangers of "sex under the influence." For all the talk of kegs, of designated drivers, or safe party planning, we are largely ignoring one of our most serious risk management issues.

II

When I went to the party, I didn't plan on sleeping with anyone. When I woke up with her this morning, I wished I hadn't. I must have had some serious beer goggles on ...

II "I was drunk" doesn't make you feel much better when you wake up with regrets. Consequences remain, even when the stupid excuse lets you off the hook with your friends, perched and ready to give you a hard time for your impaired judgment the night before. As fraternity brothers, we love to compete. We love to give each other hell for our mistakes. What we often forget is that the路 acceptance we feel from the ribbing we get the day after a ''beer goggle night" is actually disrespect hidden in jokes and laughter. While years ago, men might have admired each other for the number of women they "conquered," times have changed. Today, the man in each chapter who is the

intoxicated conquerer is considered a fool behind his back for exposing himself to countless dangers and bringing a poor reputation to the chapter. Today, the smart men in the chapter can recognize promiscuity as a sure sign of a more serious moral or emotional problem. Then, there's the danger of misunderstood body language. Too much alcohol, and many young men begin reading into a woman's actions and often misunderstanding (or reading literally what is not meant literally) ambiguous signals. When it comes to sex, alcohoi and "guess work" are a dangerous combination. Here is what we must work to make our brothers understand before the Rose Ball, before the Thursday night out, before the sorority exchange: Sexually-oriented communication between young men and women is not as easy as "yes" and "no." You can never assume that just because a woman has expressed an interest that you have the green light. And even if she said "yes" before does not necessarily mean "yes" again (or ever again). Many of our young men know and undertand this, but when we test the limits of our ''beer bravery," we often find ourselves in hot water. Then, make sure your little brother understands that if a woman has been drinking, her judgment and communication skills will not be at their highest either. Do not let the body language you interpret take the place of a true under-

standing of a woman's intentions and limits. If a young man is too drunk to understand a woman is trying to say "no," if he is too drunk to listen and respect a woman trying to say "no," or if he continues to have sex with a woman who is passed out or incapable of giving consent, it is rape. Even young men who think they would never ina thousand years force sex on a woman might lose control in an impaired-judgment situation. It's happened to a lot of men now facing rape charges, and many women have suffered the emotional consequences. Something in society has told us men that we are supposed to go after it until a woman makes us stop. Fact is, it is unfair to put that responsibility on the woman. Good, meaningful sex is a beautiful mutual thing, there is no ambiguity, and only then is sex the beautiful experience it is meant to be. Your good friends who plays "hit and miss" every weekend and finds a lot of the "wrong thing" will never know the ecstacy you will feel that one time (now or later) when you find "the real thing." It sounds idealistic, but it's true. And when it is said by someone who is respected -brother, advisor, consultant, father- it means more. Somehow, our young men need to fully understand that slowing things down in a potentially harmful situation is the act of a real man, a true gentleman. All of this is easier to do when a man's head is oper-

ating at full-capacity, free of the confusion that alcohol can bring to a situation.

II

We hear a lot about safer sex, and I always have a condom with me, believe it or not. But I was with this girl last night, and we were pretty wasted. She didn't bring it up, and I didn't really think of it...

II

Unprotected sex is highrisksex. "No glove, no love" was a favorite saying of one of my fraternity brothers at Indiana five years ago when the condom was beginning its comeback. Yet, recent independent studies have shown that a large number of young men don't know how to put on a condom correctly and are afraid toaskforadvicefrom their closest friend. Instead, most would rather learn through those first few bumbling experiences when the heat of the moment is working against them. If pride is mixed with alcohol, a young man might forego protection altogether, putting him and his partner at risk. What we are discovering, slowly but surely, is that "sex under the influence" must be dealt with in thesamewaywehavedealt with other alcohol issues. We must build our own confidences and learn to confront our friends and

brothers who are taking the risks which involve us an: When they see a brother preparing to drive under the influence, today's Pi Kapps are quick to take the keys. Yet we all applaud the brotherwhoannounces that he is only 188 hours away from that most sacred of birthdays, when he can cruise the bars legally, no longer responsible for his actions. When will we reach the point when we will pull a brother aside and question his sexual judgment instead of nicknaming him "Romeo" or "DogCatcher"? When will we stop sitting around the TV room on Sunday morning laughing about our 2 a.m. choices the night before? When will we simply ask our little brother (who has met the woman of his dreams) if he needs a condom and if he knows how to use it? Until we are "strong enough to care" and "strong enough to confront" the issues that embarrass us to some extent initially, we will continue to see our brothers make bad decisions, face date rape charges and fall deeper and deeper into self-esteem dilemmas. Until we recognize that the young man who sleeps around has a problem, we will continue to watch brothers deteriorate and drop out of school. Are we strong enough to care? We, as a national organization, are quick to reach and train our young men to recruit, to study and to achieve as leaders. Are we willing to guide them on

issues as important as sexual ethics and safer sex? If so, then we must take broader steps to train our consultants to speak openly and creatively about these issues. We must do more to encourage our alumni advisors to conquer their own awkwardness, and we must teach our collegians to confront each other in the spirit of "ultimate respect." If we fail to do this, eventually each of our chapters will have a "Magic Johnson experience" when a brother we love and admire stands before us and announces the battle of his life. If we can dedicate ourselves more (and now) to the "tough love" concept of confrontation, then perhaps we can avoid this seemingly unavoidable future. Until we can tell each other that it is OK to be sexy, scaredandsober, "sex under the influence" will continue to be one of our greatest issues. T .J. currently works for BACCHUS, Inc. , which promotes alcohol awareness on college campuses across the country.

Pi Kapps learn the meaning of service Many Pi Kapp chapters are discovering the true meaning of fraternity in the faces of some very special people in their communities. It is estimated that at least one-third of our chapters are currently involved in an active volunteer relationship. A few examples include: Tau-NCStateandMu-Duke have recently begun a relationship with Hilltop Homes, a residential center that serves children with severe disabilities. Thetwochaptersareplanning to do some work around the center and spend time volunteering with the children. In an effort to give chapters more direct and personal support, PUSH has made two additions to its full-time staff. Mike Rothschild (Gamma Nu-LaGrange) has joined the PUSH staff as the new Director of Chapter Services. Chris Hupke (Alpha Omicron-Iowa State) became the first PUSH Program Consultant. Both Mike and Chris are certainly no strangers to the road. Both were members of the PUSH America team this past summer. They work as volunteers in the Special Olympics in the summer and winter games, give time to the soup kitchens that benefit the homeless, and visit disabled kids in the hospital with a sorority. The Pi Kapps at Zeta Zeta North Florida continue to support the GIFf Educational Center of Jacksonville. The chapter has held cookouts for the Gift Center children and their families. Zeta Zeta's fundraising goal for 1991-92 is $30,000. The Pi Kapps at Epsilon XiLaSalle volunteer with Widener School in Philadelphia by conduction "Operation Swim." Each week, the brothers work with the staff to administer physical therapy exercises for the students in the pool. "When we leave for the day, the feeling is so memorable." says Justin Johnson, PUSH Chairman. "It feels good to know you're making a difference." Every week, Zeta OmegaTowson State works with a local Boy Scouts' Troop. This entire troop of Scouts is made up of boys with a variety of disabilities. PUSH applauds the volunteer efforts of these chapters and wish them the best with their newly discovered friends .

40 years and counting ... The Pi Kappa PhiFoundation was founded in 1952, and this year marks the 40th anniversary of this linchpin organization. Blessed with a fine Board of Trustees led by Dr. James B. Edwards and Wayne Moore, the Foundation is poised to assume a larger role in Pi Kappa Phi's educational activities. The only reason the Foundation exists is to support the educational programs of Pi Kappa Phi. A dynamic and growing Fraternity creates the need for the Foundation to sprint to keep pace. Over 7,000 young men look to the Foundation for quality programs that help them be contributing citizens of their college community. Themessage is clear. Once a person understands the social rent due as part of their collegiate life, he is more likely to be a contributing member of his community's social fabric after graduation. All this takes money and the Foundation has a growing corpus to support such programming. The assets of the Foundation now approach $2.5 million which places it among the leaders for the age and size of the Fraternity. Broad based support of our members have enabled the Foundation to grow from a rather modest corpus of $139,000 ten years ago to its present strength. In addition to the sustaining contributions of the Annual Appeal, more alumni are making larger donations which enrich not only the treasury but the spirit of the Foundation as well. Let me give you two examples of this enriching support. A Brother whom I have known for 20 years recently responded to an appeal with the establish-

ment of a $100,000 scholarship fund to help students who attend state-supported institutions. In the real world, philanthropy, of this magnitude, only occurs when the underlying purpose of an organization is of a superior nature. A second hearthwarming story deals with the family of one of our deceased members. His family knew how much this Brother loved his Fraternity, so after his death, they made a handsome contribution to the building fund for his chapter and have annually donated to an engineering scholarship in his name. The stories could be repeated many times, but the messag~ is clear. Pi Kappa Phi has value, and both members and non-members gain pleasure from sharing their success with this noble organization. I once heard a leader of Pi Kappa Phi say our obligation to Pi Kappa Phi requires each of us to do our part and to do our best. Throughout my 34 years of membership, I have seen this Fraternity give its student members the roots and wings to become better men. The roots to understand where they came from and what they were when they joined, and the wings to take on new responsibilities that challenge them to do their part and to do their best. It is a beautiful legacy that each of us accepted at the time of our initiation. I trust you will join the thousands of Brothers who get a continued sense of pleasure from their fraternal experience. Do you part and do your best! Yours in Pi Kappa Phi,

National President's Circle The National President's Circle was established in 1990 and since that time, 150 students have committed to this organization. To be eligible, a student must hold a leadership position in his chapter, attend a national leadership event, and pay a membership fee of $15 a year and pledge to contribute at least $50 a year as an alumnus. National President Stephen DePalama has agreed to match the contributions from the students. In 1991, over $5,000 was given to the Foundation in the name of the National President's Circle. The Gatetvay Society The Foundation Trustees are please to recognize those members and friends of Pi Kappa Phi who have made a planned gift. A planned gift is a commitment to an investment in the Fraternity. Planned gifts such as bequests, trusts, life insurance policies, gift of a home with lifetime occupancy, etc., offer tax advantages to the donor and a chance to make a greater investment than would be possible using cash. If you have made a planned gift and would like to be recognized as a member of the Gateway Society, please contact Ted Scharfenstein, 289 South Street, Rockport, MA 01966. If you would like to discuss an investment in Pi Kappa Phi, please call Ted at 508-546-2214.

Maryland ends its long road to chartering InN ovember 1989, seven students gathered at the University of Maryland to form a Pi Kapp Chapter. Now, just over two year later, the dream has become a reality. On Feb. 1, 1992,

Maryland became the home of Eta Epsilon Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. After two days of intensive examination, Chartering Officer David Lane (Nationa! Chancellor) and Asst.

The Secret of the

1\fJse By Roger Easson, Chapter Advisor, Epsilon Sigma-Christian Brothers

Roger and his wife, Dr. Kay Parkhurst-Easson.

The rose is a symbol of our fraternity's highest aspirations. Yet, the rose as a symbol does not belong exclusively to Pi Kappa Phi: it has a long history reaching back even into the traditions of ancient Egypt as a mysterious emblem of human love. The Rose as we know it in 1992 is a bizarre transformation of the rose as it was known through most of its fabled history. The longstemmed hybrid.s bear little or no resemblance whatsoever to the traditional rose. In fact, the rose is a member of the apple family. To see an apple tree in full bloom is to become immediately aware of this kinship. Moreover, the so- called "rose hip" which results when a rose is left to form its seed pod, or fruit, is really a mini apple. The ancient rose, the Phoenician rose or the Egyptian rose, was a fragrant affair, often with only a single whorl of petals. These ancient roses may have had at most two bloom

cycles, as opposed to the 10 or 12 of the modern hybrid tea rose. The modern Rose is.a cultivated event. Because as the plant is a highly cultivated and hybridized organism it represents the desire to cultivate and transform human nature so its best qualities are realized and confirmed into standards of behavior we can recognize and honor. As the center of our Pi KappaPhirituallife, itsymbolizes our frater-nity's desire to teach us how to cultivate ourselves to bring forward the best that is within each of us. R FOR ROMANCE. The rose in its beauty is often emblematic of physicallove. In your youth, at 18 or 22, you are in the bloom of your physical life. The erotic energies are at their highest peak. The body longs for the beloved, for the touch and caress of passion. In the Renaissance it was often said of a youth that he "wore the rose of youth."

Indeed, the Rose is the flower of Venus which was said to have been created when Venus was born. It was also sacred to Adonis, an emblem in Ancient Greek lore of male physical perfection. Venus was said 0

Yet, the red rose is also sacred to the Holy Mother, Mary, as it is to the Great Mother of earlier religions, Astarte and Isis. The red rose is also sacred to the Virgin, as the Queen of Heaven, as well as to Christ •

It is sacred to the Dawn, the goddess Aurora who is always called "rosy fingered," to Persephone, Goddess of Spring, harbinger of fecundity, and it is especially sacred to the Three Graces, Agalia (Brightness), Euphrosyne (Joyfulness) and Thalia (Bloom), the female trinity of fertility and invitation to life. Newlyweds traditionally slept in a bed strewn with roses, and rested their heads on pillows filled with roses. Hence the expression, a ''bed of roses" implies the consummating passion of marriage.

for whom it symbolizes the annihilation of vice through the thorns of crucifixion. 0 FOR OPPOSITION The rose is a flower that has both great beauty and many thorns. It symbolizes that duality of life we celebrate so often. Life and death. The coming together and the going apart. The Rose is the epitome of beauty, but it is a blood thirsty plant. As a rosarian, I used to grow roses. At one time, the rose beds at my home held over 200 hybrids. I know that no one grows roses. We nurse them. Moreover, the traditional method of cultivation calls

for blood meal, bone meal, cottonseed meal, epsom salts, and plenty of 6-12-12. I used to think that I could just as easily buy gerbils and sacrifice the little scutters at the greedy feet of each plant, in imitation of the legendary Indian who taught the pilgrims to plant a fish in each corn hill to grow good corn. Roses are blood thirsty plants, yet they produce the most beautiful of blooms. Odd that from blood and foulness is born such beauty of form and color and odor. So the Rose symbolizes this world of duality in which we strive to create brotherhood out of our own

experience or feeling. The bond we have as brothers is one such experience. Words cannot express the nature of that bond we build among ourselves during our fraternal rituals and experiences. Those of you who are actives build this Fraternity each fall when you go through rush, bringing new men into our brotherhood; you watch it fragment each May when we welcome Seniors into the Alumni chapter. The rose blossom is made up of many petals, which together make a rose. When the bloom is no longer needed, and the seeds ready to mature, the

These seeds contain the skills neeessary to survive among men, the social skills, the networking skills, the skills of bonding with other men in cooperative ventures in business and industry. As a result, we carry deep feelings that pulse in the blood for this experience we call Pi Kappa Phi. It is the rose that carries for us the weight of that experience, carries it beyond meaning into image and into symbol.

Heroism in Desert Storm saluted by Navy It has been over a year since the U.S. showed the world its mighty military strength during the Gulf War. Pi Kappa Phi salutes the brothers who bravely served our country. The U.S. Navy in January presented Brother and Lt. Reggie P. Carpenter (Kappa-NC-ChapelHill) its "Distinguished Flying Cross," one of its highest awards given for aerial combat achievement. His citation from the Office of the Secretary of the Navy reads as follows: "For heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot of an A-6 aircraft while serving with attack Squadron 115 embarked on U.S.S.MIDWAY(CV41)on 17January1991. On the first night of Operation DESERT STORM, Lieutenant Carpenter was assigned to attack and deny the enemy's use of a Southern Iraqi airfield. The target was heavily defended with overlapping missile envelopes and antiaircraft batteries. Flying at

extremely low altitude to avoid airborne missiles, he skillfully and aggressively flew his A-6 through a thick layer of low fog and dense anti-aircraft artillery opposition. Despite intense guided and barrage fire threatening his aircraft, Lieutenant Carpenter successfully located and prosecuted the target for a flawless precision attack. His pinpoint delivery of cluster land mine weapons denied the enemy the use of their airfield during the critical early hours of the war. LieutenantCarp-enter's brilliant leadership, superb airmanship, and courageous devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." Carpenter said, "Imagine trying to run through a sprinkler ... and not get wet. That's what it felt like exceptitwasn'twaterwewere trying to pass through, it was a wall of bullets."

Lt. Reggie Carpenter - Kappa-NC-Chapel Hill Carpenter added, "One of the most valuable lessons I learned from this experience is that war has very little to do with bravery or heroics. It all comes down to being able to perform your job under extraordi-

nary pressure." Pi Kappa Phi salutes Lt. Carpenter for his service. His story is a reminder to us as we enter a new year to be thankful for the peace we now enjoy.
