STAR & LAMP OF PI KAPPA PHI
A Wonderful World Awaits
SPRING 2010

LETTERS WITH DISTINCTION I recently attended the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) meeting in Washington, D.C. The NIC is the trade association for the 73 men’s national college fraternities. Last December the NIC celebrated its 100th year as a conference. Pi Kappa Phi joined in 1912. Interfraternal gatherings are a source of great pride for Pi Kappa Phi, and this meeting was no exception. The NIC began its Award of Distinction program in 2002 to recognize outstanding students, chapters and alumni in fraternities across the country. Pi Kappa Phi is one of the few fraternities to have been recognized in all three categories. This year, T.J. Sullivan, Alpha Psi (Indiana), was selected as the only recipient of the NIC Alumni Award of Distinction. T.J. is a re-founding father, former national staff member and long-serving volunteer of Pi Kappa Phi. He is the CEO and co-founder of CAMPUSPEAK, an organization that provides educational speakers and interactive workshops to college students and Greek communities. In his moving acceptance speech, T.J. spoke of the importance of family, and of how fraternity allows us, as friends, to become family. On a proud day for Pi Kappa Phi, he brought distinction to our letters as he himself received an Award of Distinction. At that same luncheon, Chad Coltrane, CEO of Push America proudly accepted the NIC Laurel Wreath Award for Build America—Push America’s summer construction team that travels to summer camps to build accessible amenities and friendships across the country. The Laurel Wreath Award recognizes outstanding educational projects that bring distinction to the Greek movement. When the Build America team members wear Pi Kappa Phi’s letters, they wear them with distinction not only in our eyes but now in the eyes of the interfraternal community. Pi Kappa Phi, through Push America, continues to bring distinction to our letters as we continue to excel in the area of leadership through service. There was not a better example of this leadership than the recent efforts of our Theta Eta chapter at American University. They recently sponsored a wheelchair basketball game for Push America and the Wounded Warrior project, pitting teams of wounded veterans against each other. You can read more about this on page 28. Lastly, in this issue is the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation Annual Report for 2009. It lists the honor roll of brothers and friends who support the educational efforts of the fraternity through a donation to the Foundation. In these austere times, we appreciate all of those who serve their letters with distinction whether they share their time, talent or treasure. As always, enjoy this issue of the Star & Lamp! Yours in the Brotherhood of Pi Kappa Phi,

Remembering T O D D

P O R T E R F I E L D
Ten years ago Push America was changed forever. The loss of two men, only months apart, who were selflessly dedicated to bettering the lives of people with disabilities shook Push America to its core. The deaths of Todd Porterfield, Alpha Delta (Washington), and Jason Tirado, Zeta Epsilon (George Mason), sent shockwaves across the country. The effects of their passing was felt from coast to coast in the dozens of cities they each had visited as a part of their Journey of Hope teams—from Todd’s chapter in Washington state to Jason’s chapter in Washington, D.C. Jason and Todd touched the lives of so many. And now, 10 years later, the memory of Todd and Jason is forever rooted in the core values of Push America. Two memorial grants were established in 2001 honoring the memory of Todd and Jason and their dedication to Push America. Every year, the Journey of Hope North and South teams each choose one organization they’ve visited to receive the Jason R. Tirado or Todd J. Porterfield Memorial Grants. These annual grants, which are the largest grants given each summer, go to an organization that makes the greatest

impact on the Journey of Hope team members. Since their establishment, the Porterfield and Tirado Grants have distributed more than $18,000 to directly impact people with disabilities. It is Push America’s hope that, eventually, the Jason R. Tirado and Todd J. Porterfield Memorial Grants will fund each and every grant given along the three Journey of Hope routes. Todd and Jason’s memorial grants have helped organizations across the country establish new programs and recover from financial hardship, but above all, they have changed the lives of people with disabilities for nearly a decade. Their impact on Push America, however, is far beyond monetary value. Since 2000, one could argue that Push America has grown in programming, grants disbursed and presence throughout the country as a result of Todd & Jason’s still-present influence. If you have been involved with Push America in the last 10 years, take a moment to think about the amazing things that have occurred since your involvement began. Think about the people with whom you have grown close through Push America. And think
of all the organizations that serve people with disabilities that are supported with grants each year from Push America. All of this has been made possible through the commitment and passion shown to Push America by people like Todd and Jason. Since 2000, Push America has seen the creation of two new events (Build America in 2003 and Push America Challenge in 2006) and the addition of a third Journey of Hope route (the TransAmerica route in 2005). In fact, Push America Challenge was inspired and spearheaded by Todd Porterfield’s Journey of Hope teammates in memory of their fallen brother. These new programs have helped extend Push America’s influence across the country by both Pi Kappa Phis and non-members alike. Through these new programs and service opportunities, the dollar amount of grants given each year since 2000 has increased by more than 400 percent. On April 30, 2010 and August 7, 2010, Push America will reflect upon the lives of Jason and Todd and pay respect to these two remarkable individuals who gave so much to Push America. We ask that you join us to reflect and celebrate how their legacy has forever impacted Push America. If you would like to take part in assuring that Jason and Todd’s memory continues to live on through their memorial grants, please contact Push America at (704) 504-2400.
TODD J. PORTERFIELD 19772000
Todd Porterfield, member of the Alpha Delta chapter at the University of Washington, passed to the Chapter Eternal on August 7, 2000, after being struck by car in Lexington, North Carolina, while cycling on the Journey of Hope South team. Todd leaves a long legacy of compassion, brotherhood, dedication and selfless giving. JASON R. TIRADO 19762000
Jason Tirado, member of the Zeta Epsilon chapter at George Mason University, passed to the Chapter Eternal on April 30, 2000, after a fall during a hiking trip in the North Carolina mountains. Jason was a Journey of Hope cyclist in 1999 and was spending the 2000 spring semester in North Carolina coordinating Gear Up Florida as project manager. Jason is missed by so many people. He impacted the lives of hundreds during his time with Push America. If you would like to make a contribution to the Porterfield or Tirado Memorial Grant fund, please send checks to the Push America office, made payable to Push America. Please indicate in the memo section “In memory of Todd J. Porterfield” or “In memory of Jason R. Tirado.”

Dear Brothers and Friends:
L E T T E R FROM THE CHAIRMAN 2 0 0 9
I think the thing on everyone’s minds right now is, “have we made it out of the recession?” As I speak with alumni and friends, the answer I most frequently hear is, “well, sort of” or “maybe.” We’re in interesting days right now— we’re seeing our 401Ks and IRAs rebound, but we may not feel exceptionally safe in our jobs. Some are earning bonuses again, but we’re also seeing state employees get furloughed and laid off. There is desire and hesitancy in voices when you hear talk about summer vacation plans and many have re-learned the meaning of “cutting back.” Yes, interesting days indeed, but as far as Pi Kappa Phi is concerned, not all bad either. Let me explain. Years ago I had the good fortune of attending the University of South Carolina in the mid-1970s and joined Pi Kappa Phi’s fifth oldest chapter—Sigma. Last month Sigma celebrated its centennial anniversary marking 100 years of Pi Kappa Phi brotherhood at the state’s largest university. As students, alumni and friends convened in Columbia for the weekend, an equally powerful reality— equal to hard lessons learned by many in the last 12 months—became very apparent to me. Which is to say that despite tough times, people value things of permanence and will support them with their time, talent and treasure. The friendships we have discovered through fraternity are things of permanence and form the bedrock on which the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation rests. And though we certainly did not have our most successful year on record, we did find a few wins along the way. INVESTMENT GAINS When I wrote last year’s message to you for this report, we were in a period where every other day witnessed 100-point market swings, and it seemed like a bad ride at a state fair. We’ve rebounded some, clawing upward from the losses we experienced in 2008.
Reunion, the Foundation plays host to a weekend of activities for alumni and their families while conducting the formal business of the organization. This “off year event” (occurring every other year between the fraternity’s biennial convention) began in 2005 and has been growing each year. From Las Vegas (2005) to Chicago (2007) and then Boston (2009), alumni and families are beginning to see the value in this event. The highlight, however, to our time in Boston came during the awards banquet when the fraternity recognized two of its most venerated volunteers with the Mr. Pi Kappa Phi award: Frank Havard, Gamma Phi (South Alabama), and Jim Krucher, Beta Alpha (NJIT). Though Frank has passed to the Chapter Eternal, his wonderful family joined us in Boston to accept the award on his behalf. And Jim remains one of Pi Kappa Phi’s most ardent supporters and one of the Foundation’s most dedicated donors. DEVELOPMENT UPDATE As expected in such a strong recessionary climate, we saw declines in all of the Foundation’s campaign categories last year. In speaking with our donors, the message we heard was simple: it was a season of hunkering down and, in some instances, looking for employment. We did finish the year, however, with the strongest December in at least a decade, just missing our goal for the Annual Leadership Fund (our most widely promoted campaign). The Development Committee, under the leadership of Dan Barry, Alpha (Charleston), has been busy laying the groundwork for the Foundation’s next campaign. Working with the national staff, they have now created a prioritized case statement for supporting the educational programs of Pi Kappa Phi. In layman’s terms, they have consolidated the menu of programs that are eligible for donor support and endowment relative to Pi Kappa Phi’s goals as stated in its Second Century Vision plan. As an outgrowth of this work, the Foundation has begun raising targeted funds for Pi Kappa Phi’s newly redesigned Pi Kapp College—one of the several ‘sponsorship’ opportunities we now have available. As we have turned the corner and find ourselves squarely in 2010, the Foundation is especially grateful for those donors who stuck with us last year. Your gifts during such trying times not only illuminate the lesson I was reminded of the other week, but creates in us an ever-grateful sense of thanks and appreciation. And for those donors whom we missed last year, my message to you is simple: I hope we can earn back your support this year. Your absence was felt. Please visit with us anytime. We welcome your thoughts and ideas. You may e-mail me directly at jbrewer@mailbox.sc.edu.
DESPITE TOUGH TIMES, PEOPLE VALUE THINGS OF PERMANENCE AND WILL SUPPORT THEM WITH THEIR TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE.” For the period ending December 31, 2009, the Foundation’s total portfolio posted a net-of-fee return of 15.21 percent. The Foundation has maintained a balanced portfolio of equities, bonds, commodities and cash, investing in Exchange Traded Funds through Charles Schwab. The Investment Committee, under the long-serving leadership of Pat Danehy, Delta Zeta (Appalachian State), meets regularly to monitor the Foundation’s invested assets. BEANTOWN PLAYS HOST Last June the Foundation held its Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, for the first time. Now billed as the Foundation’s Summer Alumni

LEADERSHIP SCHOOLS 2 0 0 9 Leadership Schools
Pi Kappa Phi’s Leadership Schools—Pi Kapp College and Mid Year Leadership Conference—are designed to support the fraternity’s mission by providing education and leadership training for undergraduate leaders of Pi Kappa Phi. Through an Educational Grant awarded annually to Pi Kappa Phi, the Foundation is able to help offset the costs of a student’s participation in one of the leadership schools.
Your gift to the Foundation helped to provide leadership training to one in every five undergraduates in 2009.
PI KAPP COLLEGE has served as advanced officer training since 1959. More than 500 undergraduate leaders attended Pi Kapp College at the College of Charleston in 2009. However, Pi Kappa’s first national leadership program is being completely redesigned in 2010 as an annual institute for emerging leaders. Undergraduates must apply for the intensive six-day program, which is designed to challenge and empower participants to become better leaders and better men. The Foundation is conducting its “Send a Pi Kapp to College” campaign exclusively for Pi Kapp College. For more information on how you can help “Send a Pi Kapp to College,” contact the Foundation at foundation@pikapp.org. MID YEAR LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE is held regionally each January to provide chapter officers with training unique to their specific position. Pi Kappa Phi is the only national fraternity to offer leadership training to 100 percent of its undergraduate officers. In 2010, Mid Year reached a record attendance with 1,134 students. In a survey of those students, 87 percent rated their conference experience as “excellent” or “good.” In 2011, a fourth location will be added to better accommodate the fraternity’s growth. Pi Kappa Phi recognizes that alcohol abuse is a major concern in the higher education community. Each year, the Foundation provides critical funding to support the fraternity’s alcohol education initiative. Through education, training and mature adult guidance, Pi Kappa Phi provides a comprehensive menu of tools to help students make good choices regarding alcohol, and to understand the consequences of their choices.

ALUMNI NEWS
LIFELONG Two of Pi Kappa Phi’s oldest chapters celebrate milestone anniversaries During the past month, two of the longest standing chapters of Pi Kappa Phi gathered to celebrate their founding. Sigma chapter at South Carolina (founded March 5, 1910) celebrated its centennial, and three weeks later Tau chapter at North Carolina State (founded April 24, 1920) hosted its 90th anniversary celebration. SIGMA (SOUTH CAROLINA) More than 225 alumni, students, guests and friends of Pi Kappa Phi gathered in Columbia, South Carolina, on March 20 as the Sigma chapter gathered to celebrate a century of brotherhood. Alumni representing six different decades traveled from 12 different states to celebrate Pi Kappa Phi. The brothers and guests in attendance were treated to a tour of the chapter house as well as a centennial banquet; including a keynote address by National President Jeff Wahlen, Alpha Epsilon (Florida), and remarks by Pi Kappa Phi Foundation Chairman and Past National President Jerry Brewer, Sigma (South Carolina). In addition to the numerous Sigma leaders present at the banquet, many of the fraternity’s national leaders were in attendance as well. Pi Kappa Phi CEO Mark E. Timmes, Alpha Epsilon (Florida), and the Pi Kappa Phi Properties Board also made the trip to commemorate the milestone. Even Fred Quinn, a 1938 initiate of Sigma and the fraternity’s first traveling staff member, attended the celebration. “Sigma has held a long tradition of leadership within the national fraternity,” said Steve Evans, Pi Kappa Phi’s senior director of alumni development. “Three of our past national presidents have hailed from South Carolina, as well as numerous Properties, Foundation and Push America board members. However, it is the dedication from each and every brother to develop a lifelong brotherhood of leaders that truly impresses me. The heritage of this chapter is truly one that strives to lead at the highest levels.”
In addition to celebrating their past, the brothers were also able to enjoy the recent success of the undergraduate chapter. During the 2009-2010 academic year, the chapter nearly double in size while improving their G.P.A. to a 3.09, which ranked them third among the 16 IFC fraternities. TAU (NORTH CAROLINA STATE) On April 9-10, Tau chapter celebrated its 90th anniversary. The weekend of events was enjoyed by more than 200 alumni, spouses, students, guests and friends of Pi Kappa Phi. Attendees kicked off the weekend with the chapter’s annual founder’s day golf tournament, which raised more than $1,700 for Push America. Brothers and guests reconvened on Saturday for a pig roast, house tours and the evening anniversary banquet. Those in attendance at the banquet enjoyed remarks from Pi Kappa Phi National Treasurer Dudley Woody, Xi (Roanoke); reflections on Tau history from alumni from four generations and a special ceremony including a 90-candle vigil marking each year of the chapter’s history. After the banquet, brothers and guests of all ages hit the dance floor to enjoy an evening of fun and celebration. “Over the years friends have come and gone, our children have been born, grown up and are now on their own; we’ve been to a lot of different places and seen a lot of different things, but the one constant in our life has been the Pi Kapps from NC State,” said Dawn Humphrey, wife of Tau alumnus Rich Humphrey and a member of the 90th anniversary planning committee. “The friendships that Rich and I made with people through the fraternity have really been the ones that have lasted. They have been the ones that were there for every birthday, every funeral and all of the celebrations in between and have been our most constant and true friends.”

ONCAMPUS PSI
CORNELL
ITHICA, N.Y.—The brothers of Psi chapter continue to be committed to maintaining a strong brotherhood and distinguishing themselves on campus. This fall the brothers once again earned the highest chapter G.P.A. of any Greek organizations on campus while maintaining an active social and recruiting calendar. The chapter also had an outstanding 2010 rush week, signing a 23-man associate class. This was a fantastic improvement from last year’s strong 17-man class. A new member education program has recently been implemented by the warden. Upon its completion, the chapter will have a total of 68 brothers. In addition to excelling within the Greek Community, Psi brothers remain active in campus leadership with chapter members sitting on the Student Assembly and IFC executive board, as well as two brothers participating in the Journey of Hope this summer. As always, the undergraduates appreciate contact from Psi alumni. Contact information for the chapter can be found at WWW.CORNELLPIKAPP.COM
ALPHA DELTA WASHINGTON
SEATTLE—The past two quarters at Alpha Delta have been filled with excitement as the brothers have made an effort to be more involved in the Greek System, the university and the surrounding community. In the fall, the brothers hosted the War of the Roses for the first time in several years and raised $1,500 for Push America. Sororities came out in full force to compete in a volleyball tournament and skit contest and even pulled out their pocket books to purchase Pi Kapps at a live date auction. The chapter followed up the War of the Roses by refereeing basketball games for the Special Olympics of Washington during the winter quarter. This fall, Alpha Delta also had an opportunity to show its athletic prowess. The chapter did extremely well in intramurals sports and managed to win the Intramural Activities Co-Ed Football Championship.
Brother Brendan Sherrer, a walk-on on the men’s varsity basketball team, competed with the Huskies as they advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. Alpha Delta’s hard work and commitment to brotherhood was recognized by the Interfraternity Council this month during the 20010 IFC Awards Ceremony. Pi Kappa Phi walked away with five awards including Excellence in Risk Management, Excellence in Recruitment Programming, Outstanding Community Service Efforts, Excellence in Greek Relations and Most Improved Chapter.
BETA NU HOUSTON
HOUSTON—The men of Beta Nu are having an extremely successful and enjoyable year. The brothers have earned unparalleled success in intramurals this year, placing first in the Greek flag football league and going on to win the all-university title. The men continued their winning ways this spring, bringing home seven of the 10 trophies awarded at the Spring Fiesta variety show, the premier event at Houston. The chapter has also taken a more active role in campus leadership as two brothers were elected to serve the Student Government Association. Beta Nu has also continued the tradition of taking part in summer Push America events with two brothers participating this year. Cass Moore, who recently attended Push Camp in Elgin, Texas, is a member of the Build America team and Zak Shakashir will cycle this summer as a member of the Journey of Hope team. With summer recruitment quickly approaching, the brothers of Beta Nu are gearing up for what looks to be another great year.

BUZZ CUTS FOR BROTHERHOOD WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.—David Feltner, Omega (Purdue), had one request after announcing at chapter meeting in late February that he was facing cancer for the third time in four years. He asked that his fraternity brothers help him shave his head. It took the brothers a moment to regain their composure after learning that a tumor had developed behind Feltner’s right eye, but they eagerly honored his request. So eager, in fact, that several brothers joined Feltner in shaving their heads that night. “Before we knew it, there were 40 guys with shaved heads,” said Dan Cronin, chapter archon. Since that night, nearly 60 brothers have donned a buzz cut to show love and support for an adored member of their chapter. “It is something truly special to see the amount of people who wanted to do something as simple as shaving their heads to show that they were thinking of him,” said Jim Vasil, lifelong friend and chapter brother. “I know it means more to him than most people will ever realize. Having brothers who will rally around one another at a time of great need is a testament to Pi Kappa Phi.” At the age of 17, Feltner was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his skull at the base of his eye—the same location where it was found again this February. The original cancer was treated with multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation rather than surgery with the hope of saving his right eye. Three years later, cancer was found along his spine. After nearly a year of chemo and radiation, he was given a “clean bill” of health in July 2009 and again in January 2010. The return of his cancer left Feltner with few choices; radiation was no longer an option and chemotherapy obviously had not worked. A high-risk surgery was planned to open his skull and possibly remove the right eye. On March 22, doctors were able to remove the tumor, which had grown to the size of an egg, without removing his eye. Doctors will continue to perform pathological tests in order to determine if additional surgery is necessary before starting chemotherapy this spring. As Feltner recovers from surgery, 60 bald members of the Omega chapter of Pi Kappa Phi are praying for him and eagerly awaiting his return to the chapter.
