STAR & LAMP OF PI KAPPA PHI
SPRING 2012
CEOCORNER by MARK E. TIMMES
Building on Success This summer we will gather in the nation’s capital for the 53rd meeting of the Supreme Chapter, and it promises to be one of the largest Pi Kappa Phi events ever held. Students, alumni, family and friends will join us to celebrate 35 years of Push America, which began as Pi Kappa Phi’s national service project in 1977. We will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Journey of Hope cycling team and the 10th anniversary of our Build America team. These events – along with a Washington National’s baseball game and the Supreme Banquet to honor our best and brightest students, chapters and alumni – are just a few of the activities to enjoy this August. Let me give you an advance snapshot of some of our continued success that attendees will hear about at Supreme Chapter. Growth has been a hallmark of our Second Century Vision and of paramount importance. We are pleased to report we now have 167 active chapters and associate chapters, which is an all-time high for our fraternity. We are also quickly approaching a record 9,000 undergraduate members. Our chapters and student leadership remain strong with 13 of our chapters recognized as Chapter of the Year and 12 of our men serving as student body president on their respective campuses. This past April we attended the annual meeting of the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC), the trade association of the 76 men’s national fraternities. There, we were honored to accept the Laurel Wreath Award for excellence in programming for our Ladder of Risk program. The Ladder of Risk is delivered by dynamic facilitators who educate and facilitate discussion on the fraternity’s risk management policies and procedures. It is required for all members every other year. Through this program, members learn how to host safe chapter events and to reduce risks as a chapter. It is our goal for every member to know and understand the risk management policy and for chapters to implement safe procedures at all Pi Kappa Phi events. While a proud moment, the recognition from the NIC came almost 10 years to the day from the death of Brett Jensen, an undergraduate member of Alpha Delta (Washington). Brett died in a fall from the balcony of the chapter house. As I reached out to his parents on the anniversary of his passing, I told them that while I know it is no solace, the aftermath of his loss has spurred Pi Kappa Phi to better support our students in so many ways to avoid another tragedy. The Ladder of Risk program is one such effort to better educate our students. Our thoughts remain with him and his family on this anniversary and always. Lastly, our ability to build on our successes could not have taken place without the financial support of donors to the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation. We are pleased to recognize them in the pages of the Star & Lamp in the Foundation’s annual report. As always, enjoy this issue of the Star & Lamp. Yours in the Brotherhood of Pi Kappa Phi, Mark E. Pi Kappa Phi has welcomed the return of Delta Upsilon at the University of Pittsburgh. National Historian Tim Hebson, Alpha Eta (Samford), presided over the chartering as installation officer, and Ken Forti, Sigma (South Carolina) assisted. Teams from Zeta Chi (Albright) and Epsilon Psi (Slippery Rock) were on hand to initiate 75 new Delta Upsilon brothers. Delta Upsilon was re-colonized in the spring of 2011 after Sean Zajdel, an initiate of the chapter at Albright, transferred to Pitt and formed an interest group. Since returning to campus, the chapter has quickly bonded and strived to exemplify the values of Pi Kappa Phi. The chapter has raised more than $12,000 for charity — including $6,000 for Push America. They have also grown to become the fifth largest chapter on campus and earned a 3.18 cumulative G.P.A. “After tonight, it is in your hands,” remarked Hebson at the banquet. “You have the opportunity to continue to build an organization that can positively impact your campus and thousands of men yet to come.”
Zeta Eta Chapter at the University of South Florida has been welcomed back into the fraternity’s ranks. The men accepted their charter after working for 13 months to grow their brotherhood and build a culture of leadership. Dr. Pat Figley, Chi (Stetson), presided over the chartering as the installation officer and was assisted by Properties Vice President Eric Almquist, Alpha Omicron (Iowa State). The chapter was initiated by teams from Beta Eta (Florida State) and Theta Delta (FIU). The chapter had much to celebrate as they welcomed nearly 250 guests to commemorate the chapter’s accomplishments. All in attendance were impressed by the founding fathers and their achievements, including earning the top fraternity G.P.A. and a member receiving the university’s highest honor — the Golden Bull Award. To conclude the formal banquet, the chapter gave a preview of their step show performance for a philanthropy competition that week. The chapter later placed first in the step show competition.

PI KAPP SCORES DUKE’S FIRST POINT The distinction of having scored the first athletic point for Duke University belongs to a Pi Kapp. He is Brother Bagg of Mu Chapter, a member of the Duke Varsity basketball team. The point was scored in Charlotte, N.C., on January 4, 1925, against the Davidson College quintet, which was the first opponent of Duke following its change of name. Brother Bagg tossed the first field goal after a minute and a half of playing. Duke lost the game.
from the national archives The Spring 1925 issue of the Star & Lamp reported that Brother Frank H. Bagg Jr., Mu (Duke), scored the first point for the Duke Blue Devil’s prestigious basketball program. Though basketball was first introduced in Durham in 1900, Duke was known as Trinity College until December 1924. Duke has since become the fourth winningest basketball program in NCAA history.

reconnecting alumni engaging through push america Spring is in the air, and with that comes the sound of construction at five Give-A-Push Weekends and two Push Camps. This season brought great success and positive impacts to camps that serve people with disabilities across the country. The greatest impact from such events, however, is often overlooked. More often than not, Push America’s participants experience something that will stay with them for years to come. For one family this year’s Push Camp at Camp ASCCA in Jackson’s Gap, Ala., will be a memory they’ll share for years to come. Jim Grilliot, Beta Iota (Toledo), and his sons Matt and Greg made the 650-mile trip from Versailles, Ohio, to Alabama as a way to spend time together and reconnect with their fraternity. Matt, Beta Iota (Toledo), now lives in Arizona, while his brother, Greg, Eta Upsilon (MiamiOhio) lives in Indiana.

STAR & LAMP / SPRING 2012
The Grilliot brothers both attended Push America events at Camp ASCCA as undergraduates and were able to share stories of those projects they completed more than 15 years ago, which still stand today. Jim, an alumnus initiate, was experiencing his first Push America event with his two sons and many new and younger fraternal brothers. The alumni trio worked hands-on with undergraduate members to build a storage shed that would allow campers to experience Camp ASCCA’s water-filled Splash Pad while protecting their mobility devices from the elements. “The week provided an excellent chance for us to really get to know the undergraduate members, and hopefully we were able to impart some sense of perspective based on our experiences,” said Greg. “I came away very impressed with the caliber of men that we are
recruiting to join Pi Kappa Phi. I hope that our paths cross again soon.” As Push America is about to celebrate its 35th anniversary, there are more opportunities than ever for alumni of Pi Kappa Phi to be involved in furthering the organization’s mission. As seen by the Grilliots and other alumni attendees at Camp ASCCA, getting involved with Push America is as easy — and as impactful — as ever. In addition to Push Camps and Give-APush Weekends, alumni members are also able to participate on the Journey of Hope, Gear Up Florida and Build America teams and in Push America Challenge events. “Things have changed, and I don’t think it’s accurate to say that we’re an organization strictly for undergraduates anymore,” said Push America CEO Chad Coltrane, Epsilon Iota (UNC‑Greensboro). “It’s been amazing over the last couple years watching guys my age — some even older — participate in Push America’s programs. I know how much it can mean to alumni in terms of their rededication to Pi Kappa Phi and Push America.” This July, Push America will hold a Push America Challenge event with the Enabled Athlete Program for the first time. Multiple alumni members are participating in this kayaking trip to Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands. The team is composed of people with and without disabilities working together to complete each day’s hiking and kayaking. In addition to the Apostle Islands trip, many alumni have been involved repeatedly with the Marine Corps Marathon each October through the Push America Challenge program.
“Every year we get to see new and old faces of Pi Kappa Phi alumni who use the Marine Corps Marathon as a way to challenge themselves, but also to reconnect with Push America and the fraternity,” said Director of the Push America Challenge Kyle Thomas, Alpha Gamma (Oklahoma). “If reenergizing is what they’re searching for, that’s definitely what they’ll find. More often than not, those folks come back year after year.” Even alumni chapters have been getting involved in Push America’s fundraising efforts. The alumni chapter of Epsilon Theta (Seton Hall) has been organizing a golf tournament to benefit Push America for a few years and is currently working on a tournament schedule for the summer. Over the last few years, the alumni chapter has raised more than $10,000. Epsilon Theta Alumni Chapter won the inaugural Alumni Initiative Award given by Push America in recognition of their continued support of Pi Kappa Phi and Push America. It really is as easy as ever to get involved with Push America as an alumnus, especially in such an important year in Push America’s history. We hope you can take this opportunity to relive the experience you had with Push America as an undergraduate, or take hold of an opportunity that may not have been available to you during your time as an undergraduate member. It is important to remember that Push America’s mission of “building leaders of tomorrow by serving people with disabilities today” is never limited just to collegiate members of Pi Kappa Phi. However you get involved, Push America is looking forward to having you along for the ride!

In August 2012, Pi Kappa Phi will host the 53rd Supreme Chapter in Washington, D.C. From August 2-5, we invite you to celebrate Pi Kappa Phi as we observe the 35th anniversary of Push America.
the convention All members of Pi Kappa Phi — along with their families — are invited to join us in our nation’s capital. During the convention, all chapters of the fraternity are temporarily dissolved to form the Supreme Chapter, which will elect a new national council, vote on legislation and celebrate the fraternity’s successes. Brothers and guests will be treated to a number of exciting events throughout the week that will showcase both Pi Kappa Phi and our host city, Washington, D.C. For Supreme Chapter’s opening event on Thursday, we’ll head to the ballpark to enjoy America’s pastime as the Washington Nationals take on the Philadelphia Phillies. Friday will bring the first Supreme Chapter legislative sessions as well as alumni events and family outings. Be sure to save Saturday night for the Supreme Banquet — the highlight of Supreme Chapter — where the fraternity honors its top alumni, students and chapters with the Founders’ Awards, Hall of Fame Induction and the Mr. Pi Kappa Phi award.
the 35th anniversary In addition to the traditional business of Supreme Chapter, Pi Kappa Phi will also gather to celebrate 35 years of service through Push America. Since Thomas Sayre and Durward Owen first conceived the fraternity’s national service project in 1977, members have fundraised more than $15 million to benefit the disability community and helped change the way society views people with disabilities. As we gather on the Capitol lawn
on Saturday to welcome the Journey of Hope and Build America teams, it will mark the 25th and 10th teams, respectively, as they conclude their summer of service in Washington, D.C. In addition to the arrival, attendees will also be able to celebrate this happy occasion during the Pi Alpha Ride-Along, Push America awards luncheon and Sunday evening anniversary celebration.
the hotel The luxurious JW Marriott is located on Pennsylvania Avenue and is situated near some of the most recognizable landmarks in Washington, D.C. We’ll be just around the corner from the White House with easy access to renowned monuments, the National Mall, museums, and other cultural venues around the city. Pi Kappa Phi’s discounted group rate for Supreme Chapter is $159 per night. You can make reservations online though pikapp.org or by phone at (877) 2125752. To receive the discounted rate, alumni must make reservations by July 2. (Note: Students do not need to make hotel reservations. The cost for students’ hotel stay is included in the student registration fee.)
the city With our nation’s capitol as the backdrop for our 53rd Supreme Chapter, there will be plenty to do and see for attendees and their families. The attractions in Washington, D.C., offer visitors world-class fun and iconic sightseeing—from awe-inspiring monuments and memorials like the Washington Monument and the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial to interactive experiences at places like the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum and the International Spy Museum. D.C. also provides some of the best shopping, dining and art the United States has to offer. visit pikapp.org for more information

from the chairman Dear Brothers and Friends:
2009 and 2010. Between 2010 and 2011 it doubled again from $72,000 to $144,000. Some of this can be attributed to our good brothers of Zeta Chapter at Wofford College who, in honor of their centennial anniversary, raised money for their Chapter Investment Fund. The growth in this channel, however, is both inspiring and challenging. We are grateful that many alumni find supporting their chapter in this way so compelling, yet at the same time, the Foundation must look for ways to grow the unrestricted portion of its endowment that can be used to fund the myriad of programs of the fraternity. Chapter Investment Fund gifts, as well as nearly all scholarship accounts with the Foundation, are restricted for specific uses, and therefore, cannot be used for such purposes. When considering a gift to the Foundation, it is important to remember that the strength, viability and longevity of each individual chapter is dependent upon a threeprong support base: good student members, interested and dedicated alumni and a strong national fraternity providing quality programing and assistance in the inevitable times of trouble. It is with your unrestricted gifts that the Foundation is able to support the fraternity’s programs that distinguish Pi Kappa Phi from other fraternities. From an investment perspective, we were largely flat this year, posting a very small loss of 0.35 percent. In speaking with some of our interfraternal peers who have similar fiscal years, this appears to be within several points of the norm, though slightly lagging the 60/40 index we sometimes internally benchmark against. Lastly, as you go through the pages of this report you will see some statistics about various fraternity programs. We included these numbers and facts as a way of showing you how the Foundation helps to drive impact. Your unrestricted and sometimes targeted support helps to fund programs like our Mid Year Leadership Conference and Pi Kapp College. And speaking of Pi Kapp College, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the support of those brothers who, in summer 2010, supported our pilot program with a targeted gift. Thanks to your generosity, we made an additional grant to the fraternity of $46,328 to help fund last year’s program and had enough left in the fund to jump start the 2012 sessions in June! To those donors who contributed last year, we are truly grateful that you included Pi Kappa Phi in your charitable plans and hope you will continue your support this year. To past and future donors, your absence was felt, and I hope you will reconsider this year. You are encouraged to visit with us anytime as we welcome your thoughts and ideas. Please feel free email me directly at nhightower@amerilife.com.
We are certainly in the midst of some very interesting days. With the presidential election dominating the news and with economic uncertainty remaining high, it is easy to get lost in the negative headlines. It is times like this that re-emphasize the timeless values of enduring friendship, camaraderie and an inspired desire to better one’s self that are woven into our fraternity experience. As Chairman of your Foundation, I have the opportunity to interact with students and alumni alike who, despite the fragile state of our economy and uncertainty on the horizon, dig deep year‑in and year-out with their time, wisdom and financial resources to support that which stands for something timeless and permanent: Pi Kappa Phi. We honor those donors who have supported the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation with a charitable gift in 2011 in the following report. For the fiscal year ending on December 31, 2011, nearly all of our unrestricted giving channels witnessed growth year over year. Gifts to the Pi Kappa Phi Leadership Fund, our single largest source of unrestricted support, grew by $10,814 to $182,300
Gifts to the Pi Kappa Phi Leadership Fund, our single largest source of unrestricted support, grew by $10,814 to $182,300 or an increase of 6.4 percent. or an increase of 6.4 percent. The number of gifts given in this channel also increased from 1,662 to 1,791, or approximately 8 percent. Some of our other unrestricted channels saw marked increases too, most notably, The National President’s Circle, our student giving club, which increased from $7,539 to $10,552, nearly 40 percent growth in a single year. While some of these trend lines are pointing in the right direction, we would like to improve our donor retention numbers. Though they are competitive with national averages, we believe they can be tightened. Last year, my predecessor, Jerry Brewer, Sigma (South Carolina), observed that the Foundation’s growth in restricted giving had doubled between

alpha kappa michigan
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — This spring semester has been full of excitement for Alpha Kappa. To begin the new year, the brothers were honored to receive the Theron A. Houser Award for Most Improved Chapter at Mid Year Leadership Conference. With an eye on continuing to improve the chapter, Alpha Kappa initiated 18 new members this semester, the largest spring associate class in Alpha Kappa history and the largest on campus. The chapter has continued to increase involvement with Push America. Six members traveled to Camp Joy in Ohio to participate in GAP weekend and enjoyed building accessible amenities

with brothers from across the region. The chapter has also continued to maintain a weekly volunteer relationship with the Eisenhower Center, a premier rehabilitation facility specializing in brain injury. More than 70 percent of the chapter has enjoyed bowling, board games and holiday parties with the center’s clients. In April Alpha Kappa hosted its second empathy dinner led by Push America Chairman Lars Johnson. The event featured a guest speaker from the University of Michigan Services for Students with Disabilities and raised more than $2,000 for Push America.
alpha omicron iowa state
AMES, Iowa — Alpha Omicron has begun building relationships with future Iowa State students and spoke to hundreds of potential new members at Greek Week. The chapter recently initiated their spring class and shortly after welcoming the new brothers to Pi Kappa Phi, the chapter will travel to Omaha for its annual Rose Ball. The chapter also served up eggs and breakfast food to fellow students during their Push America fundraiser, the Pi Kapp Scrambler, and will host another fundraiser later this year. This time, Iowa State students will have the opportunity to Pie a Pi Kapp for
a small fee. A number of brothers will take their passion for Push America on the road this summer as four Alpha Omicron Chapter members will take part in Gear Up Florida and two more serve as members of the Build America team. This will mark the first time Alpha Omicron has taken part in Build America and the chapter is excited to hear all about the brothers’ experience.
Alpha chi
university of miami
MIAMI, Fla. — Since re-chartering in 2009, the brothers of Alpha Chi have taken the campus by storm. Last spring the chapter recruited 30 new members, welcoming the second largest recruitment class on campus. The new associate members have the qualities and potential to become true men of CLASS. The chapter is not only one of the fastest growing fraternities, but has also dominated other aspects of the University of Miami’s Greek life. Last year Alpha Chi won the Greek Intramural Sports Championship, and they are the clear favorite this year for back-to-back titles. The chapter also made philanthropic participation a priority, placing in each sorority’s charity and hosting a successful Push America fundraising week. Academically, the chapter GPA remains in the top third amongst IFC fraternities and well above the campus average, Greek or independent. The men of Alpha Chi are committed to strengthening their brotherhood and continuing their rise to the top.
Epsilon Omega Texas Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas — It has been a busy and enjoyable semester for Epsilon Omega Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. The chapter has raised nearly $1,000 for Push America by hosting a date auction and empathy dinner with a women’s organization on campus. In addition to the date auction, brothers have also raised funds by collecting change during Pennies for Push. Epsilon Omega is looking forward to greeting the Journey of Hope South Route this summer as they pass through Lubbock and will enjoy a friendship visit with the cyclist and residents at a local supported living center. The chapter made it to the semi-finals in flag football and won the Greek red championship for outdoor soccer this past fall. Brother continued to excel in intramurals as Zach Wiebe and David Woolverton reached the semi-finals for racquetball. In March the men collected 160 signatures to help Spread the Word to End the Word. The chapter created pledge cards and distributed them outside the student union to create understanding of the negative use of the word “retarded.”
Zeta Nu
West Chester
WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Zeta Nu has continued to stand out as leaders on the West Chester University campus by getting involved on campus and making service a priority. Fourteen brothers were elected to serve the student government, while two other brothers are currently playing on Division II athletic teams.
In addition to raising nearly $1,000 for Push America and placing second in the IFC Intramural Cup, the brothers of Zeta Nu Chapter were thrilled to be honored with awards for Living the Ritual, Recruitment Success, and Academic Achievement at Mid Year Leadership Conference. Their efforts were further recognized this year as West Chester named Pi Kappa Phi IFC Chapter of the Year. The men are determined to avoid complacency and will continue their efforts to strengthen brotherhood.
eta Beta
Indiana State
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — In March Eta Beta was honored with a number of awards at the Indiana State University Greek Awards Ceremony. Members of the chapter were named Most Outstanding New Member, Greek Man of the Year and the Trailblazer Award for outstanding leadership from a newly initiated member. The chapter was also honored for academic achievement and outstanding new member education. Eta Beta recently held spring initiation, welcoming three new brothers into Pi Kappa Phi. The next day the men put their values in to action as they came together for a day of community service with roadside cleaning at their newly adopted highway in Terre Haute.

be participating in Push America summer events. Jake Magary, Jameson Lowery and Scott Rice will be taking part in the Journey of Hope, while Zach Hornberger will serve as a member of the Build America team. The chapter is extremely excited for these brothers as they continue Eta Upsilon’s tradition of involvement in Push America. Eta Upsilon is also serving people with disabilities in the local community. This semester, the chapter has organized two Push Dinners as well as a Push Ice Cream and Movie Social. At each event, Pi Kappa Phi brothers pair up with a sorority and have dinner with representatives from the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities. More than 40 students gathered in the Alpha Delta Pi suite to enjoy a catered dinner and a sidewalk chalk activity. At the Greek Awards ceremony, Pi Kappa Phi was one of four chapters out of 50 organizations to win all five pillar awards. The pillars — Scholarship & Learning, Service and Philanthropy, Leadership, Community, and Brotherhood & Sisterhood — represent the values fraternities and sororities strive to attain at Miami University. Eta Upsilon was also honored with two additional awards, the Rising Leader Award was awarded to Archon Jake Magary for his efforts as a sophomore president and the Outstanding Advisor Award was presented to Adam Van Treese, an alumnus of Eta Upsilon. In two weeks, Eta Upsilon will host their first Family Feud—a weekend of family-specific games and sports, which revolve around friendly competition and pride among the several family lines that run strongly through the chapter.

Theta Nu Delaware
NEWARK, Del. — This semester the brothers at the University of Delaware have made incredible strides towards bettering Pi Kappa Phi. Theta Nu had an excellent spring recruitment and signed 15 dedicated men. In the past two years, the chapter grew from 3 man associate classes to recruiting at least 15 men the past 3 semesters. The total number of active brothers has reached a record high since the chapter’s founding in 2007. Over the past year, Theta Nu has placed an emphasis on service and has really enjoyed hosting a number of Push America events. At Mid Year Leadership Conference, Theta Nu was awarded the Thomas H. Sayre award for exceptional fundraising. Each year the chapter hosts an annual karaoke event to benefit Push America. Brothers also take part in canning and bike-a-thons to raise addition funds on behalf of people with disabilities. In two weeks the chapter will attend a brotherhood retreat and strategic planning session. Active brothers, a number of alumni and associate members will spend the weekend strengthening the bonds of brotherhood within the chapter. During the retreat the men will create a plan to take Theta Nu from a Champion Master Chapter to a Fogarty Award winner.
Theta Upsilon
Northern Arizona
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — As the chapter prepared for its third anniversary, the brothers of Theta Upsilon Chapter sought to kick off 2012 on the right foot. On February
18, the chapter volunteered with the Special Olympics. Participants from all around the area competed in events such as snowshoe racing and meter dashes. “It felt like I was making a difference in community, it allowed others to see Pi Kappa Phi trying to help the community and make a difference,” one brother commented.
Theta Phi
Louisiana tech
RUSTON, La. — Last October Theta Phi held its annual stationary bike-athon, Pedal for Push, raising $1,300 to support people with disabilities. The fall new member class also hosted a dodgeball tournament, contributing $450 towards the chapter’s Push America fundraising. Later in the semester, Bryan Babcock was elected to Louisiana Tech’s homecoming court to round out an exciting fall for the chapter. In January Theta Phi traveled to attend Mid-Year Leadership Conference. In addition to receiving leadership training, the brothers returned home with numerous awards. Past Archon Clint Carlisle was named the Dr. Phillip M. Summers Student of the Year, Dr. Barry J. Morales was honored as Chapter Advisor of the Year Award and the chapter was recognized as Most Improved in Superior Associate Member Education. Theta Phi also sent seven brothers to Give-A-Push Weekend in Anacoco, La in March. Tyler Wagnon, Theta Phi’s Vice Archon, is preparing to ride as a member of the Gear Up Florida team this summer. Pi Kappa Phi took home second place at this year’s Interfraternity
Council annual basketball tournament. There were a total of 10 fraternities competing in the tournament. Benjamin Strecker, a sophomore, was elected chief justice for the IFC’s Executive Council while Austin Vining was appointed philanthropy hair.
Iota GAMMA WYOMING
LARAMIE, Wyo. — Iota Gamma is enjoying its first year as a chartered chapter of Pi Kappa Phi. The brothers celebrated the Iota Gamma’s one year anniversary by hosting their first ever Rose Ball. This spring the chapter initiated the Beta Class under the direction of the chapter’s certified ritualist, Asa Erlewine. Brother Erlwine attended the ritual training seminar at Mid Year Leadership Conference in St. Louis and brought home sound advice and knowledge to the brothers at Wyoming. Iota Gamma is also excited about their service opportunities in the coming month. The chapter recently formed a local volunteer relationship with the Special Olympics and will begin pitching in during events throughout the year. The brothers have also begun planning for their first War of the Roses Push America event in the fall.
Iota Kappa
Northern Colorado
GREELEY, Colo. — The chapter at the University of Northern Colorado has continued to grow and kicked off the fall semester off with a successful rush that brought in twenty-seven new associate members. Twenty-four of these men were later initiated, marking the largest class on campus
and securing the chapter’s position as largest fraternity on campus. Iota Kappa had another successful recruitment class in the spring as the chapter handed out twelve bids and will initiate 10 new members this semester. The chapter continued their winning ways on the intramural field as Pi Kappa Phi’s A team defeated the chapter’s B team in the flag football championship. This spring Iota Kappa’s basketball team went undefeated for the second year in a row after taking the championship over Sigma Chi in overtime. The brothers again led campus this spring as Pi Kappa Phi set a campus record for a philanthropic fundraiser with a date auction in February. The event, which raised more than $3,500, also included an intermission where brother discussed disabilities awareness and showed a video about Push America.
UT-DALLAS
ASSOCIATE CHAPTER
DALLAS — After completing the expansion at UT Dallas in November 2011, the associate chapter has consistently grown and developed their brotherhood. The chapter is especially proud of their success in academic achievement and community service efforts. In the fall the UTD Associate Chapter recorded a 3.31 semester GPA, the highest of all fraternities and sororities at UT Dallas. In addition to succeeding as a chapter, Philip Campbell and Evan Carr were also inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. In February the chapter hosted their first Push America event, Pedal
for Push America, and managed to raise nearly $1,100 in 72 hours. Two of the men who participated, Eugieneo Kandoth and Philip Campbell, did not get enough cycling will both be participating in Gear up Florida this summer. Locally, the associate chapter is already making an impact through a non-profit wheelchair ramp construction organization called Dallas Ramps. The founding fathers have completed a number of accessibility ramps in Dallas and look forward to building many more. The new associate chapter is also proud to highlight the success on the diamond by three brothers, including our Vice Archon and starting third baseman, Eli Settoon. The UTD Comets are currently leading the Division III American Southwest Conference and are expected to compete in the conference tournament title game for the fifth time in the team’s 10 year history. Pi Kappa Phi at UTD is working very hard to redefine fraternity on their campus, and their successes are proving that they are well on their way to becoming Leaders by Choice.

ALUMNI New s
LIFELONG A coast-to-coast trek for a worthy cause Inspired by a wounded veteran and fellow chapter brother, Alastair McCandless is walking across America to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project.
Many people will go to great lengths to help a friend, but few would go as far as alumnus Alastair McCandless, Delta (Furman). He’s walking 3,600 miles — all the way across America — to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of chapter brother Delta Alumni Ken Dwyer (left) and Alastair Ken Dwyer, a U.S. Army Special McCandless (right). Forces officer wounded in August of 2006 in Afghanistan. Dwyer was hit with a rocket-propelled grenade and lost his left hand and left eye, among other injuries. For McCandless, the trek is both a way to support a great cause and a time for personal renewal. After spending 14 years in the food service industry, he felt he needed to pursue something more fulfilling. He came up with the idea of “taking a long walk” to raise awareness and funds for a worthy program. He was still undecided on which organization to support, though, when he placed a call to Dwyer. “I was asking him what I should do to train for a long walk, because he’s in Special Forces,” says McCandless. “He would know what I needed to do to walk 20 miles a day.” Dwyer provided more than training tips. He told McCandless about the Wounded Warrior Project, which played a major role in his own recovery. Suddenly McCandless had his cause. He decided to walk from Delaware to California along the northern route of the American Discovery Trail, with a goal of raising $25,000 for the WWP. Dwyer, now back on active duty as a major in command operations, says, “I told him it would take a while to train, but he has certainly done it, and I’m impressed with what he’s trying to do.”
McCandless, a Greenville resident, has proven he was more than just talk. Starting April 23, 2011, in Cape Henlopen, Del., he made his way over the next six months to Omaha, Neb., more than halfway to his destination. He then decided to take a break to avoid traversing the rugged Rocky Mountains during the dead of winter. McCandless plans to return this April to Omaha to resume his walk, which will include 12,000 feet of elevation. Assuming all goes well, he’ll finish this fall at Point Reyes National Seashore near San Francisco. During the first portion of his walk, McCandless maintained a pace of 20 miles per day while carrying a 40-pound backpack. Along the way he lost 30 pounds. Each night he looked for a campsite, a church, or a person willing to take him in. He says he was amazed by how much help people offered when they learned what he was doing and why. “The best thing is, this has taken away a lot of the cynicism I had. It’s been so amazing the extent people will go to help. It’s renewed my belief in mankind.” As for his cause, the Wounded Warrior Project helps thousands of injured soldiers and caregivers by providing such programs as stress recovery workshops, caregiver retreats, employment assistance services and peer mentoring. Ken’s wife says that even the small services have a big impact. She learned about the WWP during the blur of the first few days after Ken was injured, when he was at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Just when the family needed it, they received a backpack filled with basics like underwear, gym shorts, shirts and deodorant. The article, by Leigh Gauthier Savage, was reprinted with permission from Winter 2012 issue of Furman Magazine.

“The Wounded Warrior Project helps thousands of injured soldiers and caregivers by providing such programs as stress recovery workshops, caregiver retreats, employment assistance services and peer mentoring.”
“Ken was evacuated with nothing but his uniform,” she says. “And packing was the farthest thing from my mind. I had an almost three-year-old son, and I was four months pregnant. But as soon as he needed these things, the Wounded Warrior Project was there. It made life easier.” Having mastered use of his prosthetic hand, Ken says he can now do everything he used to do, including play baseball with his son, 8-year-old Timothy, using a technique he learned by watching one‑handed pitcher Jim Abbott.
