As most of you know, the Pi Kappa Phi Toledo Alumni Corporation has been busy providing housing and furniture to the Beta Iota Student chapter. Over the past several years the housing corp. has been assisting the chapter with providing leadership grants to send extra leaders to the national Mid-Year Leadership Conference. After the corp. adopted the Judge John J. Connors Scholar/ Leadership Award, we have provided small scholarships for the student recipient, when funds were available. The funds for this grants have been provided primarily through donations from alumni through the housing corporation’s fund. As the Housing Corp. looked forward, they envisioned a better way to increase alumni participation in the giving program. They looked to making contributions tax-deductible. Two foundations were considered. The

Pi Kappa Phi Foundation and the UT Foundation. The Pi Kappa Phi Foundation’s Chapter Investment Fund (CIF) to benefit student members. With this fund, we need to achieve a $5,000 balance and then we could only utilize 10%, while keeping the fund balance no lower than $5,000. The current fund balance is $485. The corporation learned that we could establish a similar fund through the UT Foundation, with no minimum requirements. Donations to these funds will be added to the donor’s total university giving recognition. A few years ago, the housing corp. established Pi Kappa Phi Development Fund (2-401629)” at the UT Foundation. Currently, the alumni are looking to establish an additional endowed fund to make scholarship grants to benefit the student chapter. An establishment

of this type would require at least $25,000 to fund and we would only use the gains of the fund which would keep the principal whole and growing. This would allow a permanent fund to live in perpetuity and would be the largest capital undertaking the alumni has taken on since the initial furnishing of the campus house in 1990.

“This type of effort will significantly assist our efforts to help the chapter through becoming better leaders though academic success.” said Mark Urrutia, housing corp. president.

“Because of the awesome strides the chapter has made in recent years, it’s our time to help them reach the next level.” Please consider helping us to assist the undergraduate chapter by serving on the committee. To help give back in this way, send an email to: hcPres@PiKapp.info.

Alumni Updates Bob Thorburn (235) gave his 121st pint of blood this winter. Great job Bob! Michael “Sevi” Severino (519) On January 14th Sevi was admitted to The Toledo Hospital due to a blood clot in his right leg. After a lengthy surgery and multiple tests, it was decided that the leg could not be saved. On January 16th his leg was amputated at mid thigh. He spent the better part of two weeks in ICU. On January 28th he was moved to Heartland of Perrysburg for healing and rehabilitation. He will stay there until he is well enough to return to his home. That could take three months or more.

Due to his inability to work and mounting expenses, his friends and family will be holding a benefit to raise money to cover his living expenses, transportation and help him get a fresh start on his

new normal. th

The benefit will be held on Saturday, May 18 , 2013 at the VFW Hall, 5416 Summit St., Toledo, OH 43611. The doors will open at 5:30pm and we will begin serving dinner from 6pm until everyone is served. Dinner will consist of spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert and lemonade. A monetary donation will be gratefully accepted. A cash bar will also be available.

Chapter Update The chapter recruitment efforts have bee great. They had free food and drinks throughout the week for potential new members. They issued twenty one bids and twenty were accepted. This is the reason why we got a Master Recruitment Award from National Fraternity, Level 3. After the newly Associate Members signed their bid card's they enjoyed a pasta dinner with the lovely women of Alpha Chi Omega. The dinner was prepared and cooked by the active brothers for the new Associate Members. The chapter participated in 7 sports.

Indoor and Outdoor Soccer, Slowpitch Softball, Dodgeball, Volleyball, Basketball and Flag Football. The brothers achieved a second place finish in both outdoor soccer and basketball; while finishing third in Slow-Pitch Softball. Beta Iota started to do fundraising events which consisted of stadium cleanups at the Glass Bowl and working the concession stand for both Toledo Walleye games and The Circus at The Huntington Center, in order to increase the funding for the regular chapter activities. The chapter as a whole

Networking raised a total amount of $2057.37. The Pi Kapps paired up with Alpha Chi Omega this fall, to start the float building competition. After a fun and hardworking week, the chapter achieved third place in the float building competition. Archon Victor Petzall (888) was on the final ballot for Homecoming King as well. The chapter continues the proud tradition of shooting the cannon for Toledo rocket football games. The best is yet to come!

Several years ago Beta Iota alumni started a quarterly business networking group. Hasn’t been around in a while. Anyone interested, please e-mail: Connections@PiKapp. info

Pi Kappa Phi expands/connects in Ohio This year brings new growth and reconnection in Ohio. The growth is the average number of student members in chapters and the addition of yet another chapter in Ohio. University of Dayton chapter is slated to be initiated in April. This brings us to 7 student chapters by year end.

We have been approached by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland to begin a chapter in a few years, so get ready for #8. The national fraternity is beginning alumni chapters in two Ohio cities in the Greater Ohio RegionCleveland and Columbus. In these areas, we need a few volunteers to set up an event a few times a year to bring together Pi

Kapp alumni for all alumni living in those area. If you can help, please contact Mark Urrutia @ MarkUrrutia@bex.net Also, alumni volunteers are needed for the chapters at Ohio U. and BGSU.

Alumni “Spotlite”- Michael Severino by: Chapter Historian, Alejandro Vera

Sevi benefit will be held on Saturday, May 18th, 2013 at the VFW Hall, 5416 Summit St., Toledo, OH 43611.

Brother Michael John Severino’s (519) devotion for education makes him a leader of the fraternity and an outstanding role model. He started doing his share to make Beta Iota an ideal chapter when he pledged in the fall of 1994. Sevi continued to lead by example after his long pledge period and initiation on February 4th of 1995. Even after graduation, he continues to serve the chapter as the current ritual and member education advisor. “Sevi” was born in 1975 in the suburbs of Chicago, but he currently resides in Toledo. After getting a Business degree at the UT and attending law school, he began a successful teaching career with Kaplan Test Prep. Over his 12 years there, he achieved several

teaching awards. He was recognized 10 times with the “Toledo Teacher of the Year” award. When he left the company, he was ranked 8th out of more than 10,000 teachers in North America and 1st in the Ohio-Michigan region. He also was recognized as one of the best teacher trainers in the nation. His devotion towards the fraternity led to several achievements inside the fraternity. As an active brother, Sevi held the Standards Board and Warden positions. He also helped the chapter to obtain awards like the Dean Parks Campus and Community Involvement award (later held for 8 years straight) and Songfest crowns (3 in a row). Even after Sevi’s graduation, his dedication for the fraternity didn’t stop. His contributions as an alumnus and as our current

ritual advisor, earned him three ‘Alumni of the Year’ awards. Sevi’s passion and courage to lead was not limited to the fraternity and his career. He became a very influential leader at UT throughout his college experience. His campus involvement record includes several positions in student organizations, including elected Senator of The College of Business in Student Government (for which he was named Senator of the Year) and high prestige honor societies such as Mortar Board. Brother Severino continues to represent the ideals of Pi Kappa Phi, living the ritual and keeping the legacy that he started. Sevi is an example of all the ideals that we all strive to live by in Pi Kappa Phi: being a leader, teacher, and brother, Sevi is an example of lifelong brotherhood, and his legacy will never be forgotten.
