Alumnus Spotlight: Donald Clark ‘54 By: Matt Kahn Many things were happening the year you joined Pi Kappa Phi— Marilyn Monroe married Joe DiMaggio, the 1st Issue of Sports Illustrated was published in the US, and the US Supreme Court ruled that segregated schools were unconstitutional in Brown v. Board of Education – What was it like on campus at that time? Campus was the old parking garage building. Two thirds of the students were in night school (mostly GI's from WW11). All day students lived at home or somewhere in Atlanta. I rode the street car to school, as parking was very limited. Very little school spirit, with limited sport activities. How did you get introduced to Pi Kappa Phi? We had a local fraternity, Zeta Chi Delta, and wanted to belong to a national fraternity. We selected Pi Kappa Phi over several other national fraternities. What was your best memory being a part of the Beta Kappa Chapter?
Making friends in college and still friends after 55 years. Going to meetings or activities and talking to other Pi Kappa Phi alumni. When you look back on your time as a student member of Pi Kappa Phi, what lessons did you learn having been a founder of the Beta Kappa Chapter? The honor of being the first national social fraternity on campus. Tell us a little bit about your family. I married a lady I met in college, served two years in the army as a lieutenant from ROTC, worked for an oil company, trucking company and managed a distribution center before moving to Florida in 1969. I have worked here in transportation and have retired from the real estate business. I was divorced in 1980 and re-married in 1997. I have three children and three grand children plus three step children, two step-grand children and three step greatgrandchildren. I am very active in the learning and retirement program at the University of South Florida
and volunteer work at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and the Tampa Bay and Company. For student members who will read this issue of the Pi Kappa Phi Newsletter, what advice do you have for them? Keep up with your present fraternity brothers after you graduate. Do not wait 45 years to try to locate them. Make sure that our national headquarters always have your home address. Tell future college students of all the wonderful things about Pi Kappa Phi. Brother Spotlight: Paul Marmol By: Cody Heermans Brother Paul Marmol has always exemplified a serious passion for maintaining a strong brotherhood and upholding the duties that come with being a member of Pi Kappa Phi. His ability to balance his school work along with great involvement in extracurricular activities shows his work ethic. Brother Paul is currently an Actuarial Science major with a minor in Computer Science. After he receives an undergraduate degree from Georgia State, he hopes to either enter graduate school at GSU or Emory’s Goizueta School of Business for an MBA. His goal from there is to pursue a career as an Actuary. Paul currently has the second highest GPA in the fraternity at 3.84. This semester Paul is broadening his goals and filling his free time with every meaningful position he finds. He is currently the Treasurer for Beta Kappa, and will be until the end of this upcoming fall semester. He’s been a part of the rush committee every
semester, and is very active in looking for quality young men that will contribute to our chapter. His treasurer duties go beyond our chapter. He started as an IFC Delegate but recently became the IFC Treasurer. After a resignation from an SGA Senator, Paul stepped in and took the job this semester. He is currently running for reelection to maintain his spot on the SGA. With all of the duties he has acquired outside of school along with a heavy workload in school, Paul is still determined to put the time and effort in to maintaining a strong brotherhood. “I believe that our chapter's best quality is our brotherhood. I feel that when we put all business aside, we are all closer friends than any other fraternity.” Although he knows that the work to maintaining a great chapter never ends, Paul is happy with where we have come. “We have gone from a chapter with less than 30 guys, to now almost 45; a drastic increase, which I find to be incredible. Our chapter cumulative GPA has
gone from a scary 2.6 to an astounding 3.0. I see this chapter growing drastically in the next few years as GSU grows and develops closer to a more traditional college.” Every member of Beta Kappa knows the potential our chapter has, and we know the work that is ahead to reach this potential. With brothers like Paul leading by example, the future for the chapter certainly looks positive.

Historian Report By: Matt Kahn The men of Beta Kappa have had an extraordinary month, filled with events and academics. Earlier in the month we had our first alumni-brother softball game. I would like to thank: John Oxford, Steve Sweeney, and John Slack for taking the time to come out to Peachtree Hills and hang out with the guys. We will be scheduling more alumni-softball games and events this summer. We also had the Alumni Braves game at the Golden Moon Casino Patio at Turner Field. There was a great turn out and I would like to thank: Jason Jones, David McCabe, John Oxford, and Kyle Killough for taking the
semester and with the start of college football at Georgia State we are looking at a Greek Life transformation. We will be setting up weekly home game tailThe semester is coming to a gates where alumni, family and friends close and I feel very proud of the work will always be welcome. I have enjoyed that we have accomplished as a chapter interviewing the alumni for the monthly in the area of public relations and spotlight piece— next month I think I alumni relations. March Intramural Update The spring sports season started off slow with an early forfeit from all the teams. The first annual spring outdoor retreat may or may not have been the reason. Regardless the next week the squads got it together both Beating Sigma Nu in softball and Alpha Epsilon Pi in outdoor soccer. The soccer teams made a valiant effort against Kappa Sigma taking them into overtime where they lost in the waning moments. Due to the multiple forfeits in Softball the team was not allowed into the playoffs thus the end of the season.

blood next year Pi Kappa Phi will once again be back on top. This will be my last article of the semester. I wish everyone a great summer and hope to be back reporting in the fall.
Going into the spring Pi Kappa Sayonara! Phi was within striking distance down 17 points for the coveted All-Sports Trophy. With the recent defeats and forfeits it looks like Pi Kappa Phi has a stronghold on 2nd place for the remainder of the school year. The future looks bright though for Pi Kappa Phi athletics and an influx of some new

Readers, Sorry for the delay in sending out the March/April newsletter. It was a very busy couple of months for the fraternity. Everyone was dealing with the pressures of exams and final papers and then right in the middle of the month everyone is hit with spring break. We had our first two alumni events and unfortunately due to inclement weather we had to postpone parent’s . This past Tuesday we had out 3rd Annual Lasagna Extravaganza hosted by Larry & Ellie Kahn and also had our picture taken for our first composite. This has been a monumental semester as far as the development of Beta Kappa public relations and I would like to thank all of the alumni and brothers who have helped support the changes and encourage everyone to continue the hard work and positive changes.
