Fall 2009 Intramurals By: David Ewalt After a champion 2008-09 campaign in intramurals, Pi Kappa Phi was primed and ready to defend their title as All-Sports Champions. Things didn’t go as smoothly as planned and Pi Kapp started off the flag football season winless. The playoffs came around though and Pi Kapp put a beat down on IFC rival Sigma Nu in the semifinals. Next was Pi Kappa Alpha, the reigning GSU champions. Pi Kappa Phi took them all the way to the wire losing 12-7 on a Pike goal line stand with just seconds remaining. Soccer was the next sport, and with the new energetic blood added from the Alpha Xi pledge class, Pi Kappa Phi had a new found confidence joining the team.

Pi Kapp went 2-2 in the regular season splitting games between Pike and Sigma Nu. Pike was kicked out of the playoffs for poor sportsman-

ship, so Pi Kappa Phi went straight to the championship. The game was tied 2-2 at halftime and looked like it was going to be a barn burner. Sigma Nu began pestering, pushing and pummeling the

best player for Pi Kappa Phi, slowly getting him out of his game. The final score was 2-6 with a Sigma Nu victory. Signs of the future are very promising for the soccer team and Championships are expected in the coming years. Volleyball was the last sport of the semester and Pi Kapp dominated. Our lineup was by far the tallest of all fraternities on the court, and we finished the season undefeated. Pi Kapp is now second in the running for 2009-2010 AllSports and with the softball and basketball coming up this Spring, we are determined to go for the gold for the second year in a row.

Staying Active with Push America By Joey Commander If anyone is interested in placing an ad, or writing an article please send all submissions in email to: mkahn2@student.gsu. edu

Push America is back in full swing this semester. Beta Kappa is working hard to make Push America more prominent on the campus and in the community. David Brown, our Push Chairman, is going for his second Journey of Hope trip this summer. This trip, David will be taking the north route, which is from San Francisco to Washington DC. He has

already received many generous donations and is still taking donations to help him in his journey to raise disability awareness across the nation. Most recently, he has received a $1,000 donation from our local Wal-Mart. Beta Kappa will continue its philanthropic work with The Side by Side house. Side by Side is a community center in

the Stone Mountain area for recovering brain injury patients.

Historian Report By: Matt Kahn have completed a rough draft of infor a picture formation beginat Founder’s ning at BK#1 John Day 2009 at Wiley Barber all the way to Gordon BK#594 Timi Biersch Omotoso, thanks to the help of Steve Evans from Pi Kappa Phi HQ. I will be going through the list and editing over the next couple of months and hopefully have a final edition ready to send out by the end of the 2010 spring semester. Secondly, I wanted to create a job board, where brothers can post resumes, and alumni can post job opportunities. Rather than going through the hassle of creating an independent job board, it was suggested to me The brothers posing

First of all, Founder’s Day 2009 was a great success for Beta Kappa and I would like to thank alumni: David Sloane, Ken Cribbs, Paul Wnuk, and Scott Hall, for coming and enjoying the evening with us. I have big plans for Beta Kappa and I would like to inform everyone of those plans. The first project I have taken on as the newly elected historian is to create an Alumni-Brother Directory. I

that I create a subgroup of Pi Kappa Phi on LinkIn.com. I am currently in the process of creating a BK subgroup, so any interested parties look me up and join the group. There are many other plans that are currently under construction, but you have next month’s edition to hear about them. I look forward to a future of connectedness between the Alumni and Brothers. - BK 538

Graduating Class of Fall 2009 By Cody Heermans The recent graduation class of Beta Kappa was not only successful academically, but managed to play an immeasurable role in the development of our chapter. Many of these brothers were involved for the majority of their college years. Each of them served a unique role in bettering our chapter. Matt Deininger graduated with a marketing degree. He served as Secretary and looks to pursue a job in law enforcement after a few years of work experience. Ian Barton received a Computer Information Systems degree. His job as an IT specialist in the library was a great help for many brothers in the way of printing and computer savvy advice. He is looking to land a job in Atlanta to continue to put his computer

knowledge to good use. Patrick Cheney graduated from the Journalism school with a concentration in print. He served as the Vice Archon, Historian, and Intramurals Chair during his time with the chapter. He was also the two-time athlete of the year and a very dedicated brother in the growth of the chapter. Mathew Harris received his degree in CIS along with Ian. He has now moved on to the corporate world as he works for AT&T on a matrix team. He served as Treasurer, Secretary, and Chaplain. Last but not least is Jake Weiss. He was an Accounting major and recently began a new job with an Atlanta accounting firm. The Beta Kappa chapter of Pi Kappa Phi would like to congratulate these brothers as

they move to a new chapter in life. Their time as brothers was a definite success, and will hopefully generate a standard unmatched for our chapter as it continues to grow and develop.

Staying Active with Push America continued So far, our experiences with their faculty and members have been outstanding. The members really seem to be benefiting from the work done at the center. They recently had their first veteran from Iraq join the center. A new endeavor this semester is the basketball wheel chair being headed by David and Joey. We will be practicing with the team at the YMCA every Wednesday night to aid them in their preparation against some tough competitors. Good luck to the wonderful kids at the YMCA this season! Don’t forget folks, contact David Brown for questions and/ or donations, he can use all of the money he can get for his service to Disability Awareness. Online Donations can go to - http:// secure.pushamerica.org/davidbrown

Readers, I hope you all enjoy the first edition of the Pi Kappa Phi Newsletter. My goal through publishing this monthly newsletter is not only to include alumni and parents in on the happenings of the chapter, but to create a medium for our chapter to record its history as it is happening. Some day I hope to look back through these newsletters and be reminded of the “good ole college days.” If anyone has any suggestions or would like to share anything whether it be a story or a photograph, please do not hesitate to contact me. This is my first try at newsletter publishing and I am open to anything that can help. See y’all next month
