Century Note Pi Kappa Phi Delta Delta Chapter Spring 2010
The Journey of a Lifetime
L
ast summer three brothers from our chapter, Shane Mulrooney, Whitey Holt, and Clement Warr, participated in Push America ‘s largest annual event, Journey of Hope, a cross-country cycling trip consisting of three routes that brings together over 70 Pi Kapps from around the nation to raise funds and awareness for people with special needs. The event annually raises over $500,000 for people with disabilities and the organizations that serve them. As volunteer cyclists, we each raised over $5,000 and earned spots on the Trans America team, which is the most prestigious and oldest of three routes. Our team cycled over 4,000 miles from Seattle, WA to Washington D.C. covering terrain like the Cascade and Appalachian Mountains, plains, and the rolling hills of Missouri. In total we cycled through 14 states on our way to D.C. This amazing experience further enhanced my belief that Pi Kappa Phi is this nation’s greatest fraternity. No other social fraternity offers its members opportunities to have rewarding, lifechanging experiences like the Journey of Hope. This trip allowed us to see the country while making a significant impact on the lives of thousands of people. In addition, the money we raised allows dozens of organizations to continue to provide excellent services to their communities. On the behalf of my teammates, I would like to thank all the actives, alumni, and friends that supported us throughout this endeavor. Without your generous donations and kind words none of this would have been possible. Also, thanks to all the guys who came to visit us during the trip. Seeing our chapter brothers definitely helped motivate and reenergize us. Finally, I encourage all of you to continue to support Push America and take pride in doing so. Thanks again and hopefully I see everyone at Roseball. Fraternally, Clement Warr ∆∆ 651

in the spring bringing the active chapter size up to 47. We anticipate growing back to the 50's next fall, as we are only graduating four seniors this May. We have continued to improve our Rush program and Recruitment program through Rush retreats and other ideas. I have worked personally with our Vice-Archon External Joshua Wills extensively to continually recruit hard and to fight the dwindling rush numbers here on campus. Our financial status has continued to improve and I have worked hard with our treasurer, Jon Davis, to make a realistic budget and collect dues and past debts. Our diligence in this area has made the chapter operate more efficiently and has us looking toward the future without continually having to focus on the past. With the help of Jon Challis we switched our cable service and are now getting better service for far cheaper. We haven't missed a rent payment in over two years and are now working on building up a stable financial foundation. We continue to be very active in Push. We sent 16 members to Push Camp in Georgia this Spring Break to build an amphitheater for people with disabilities. It was an eye-opening experience for all of the members who attended Push Camp, especially the new brothers like Greg Cejas who were new to the trip. This alternative Spring Break option continues to be an appealing option for the brothers of this chapter to get involved in Push America. This past summer we had three brothers participate in Journey of Hope. Now alumni Whitey Holt, Clement Warr, and Shane Mulrooney worked hard to raise enough money to participate in the summer event and trained hard to get in good enough shape to make the bike trip a success. All three had a positive experience that has impacted their lives in a huge way. Accessibility is set up for later this semester before we get out for the summer. After a few bumps with working out our schedules with RAIL, we are back on the same page and are ready for a successful Accessibility. Our previous Archon, Brother Tyler Menz, now has a job at nationals starting new chapters. As a Leadership Consultant, Tyler Menz will be working directly with headquarters, mostly in the area of expansion. This is important because as some of you may know we are the fastest growing national fraternity. He is a great example and is representative of our entire chapter. Roseball this year is April 17 at the Days Inn. As always, we will be setting up the usual Roseball fun all weekend at the Chapter House. We hope you all can come back and have a good time with us and we all are looking forward to seeing you. Fraternally, Archon Steve Layton, ∆∆ 710
Pledge Class Spring 2010
T
he spring 2010 pledge class is what you might call the “ideal” pledge class. We are striving to be the best pledge class by being the best class of brothers to ever join Pi Kappa Phi. We have struggled a bit with certain aspects of the fraternity but have excelled in other ways. We have been active with IM’s, Greek Week, and push events throughout the semester. This brings us to why we joined Pi Kapp. For most of us, we could have chosen another fraternity. All fraternities offer something unique in their own way. Some offer good IM’s, brotherhood, or parties. However, for us there was no fraternity quite like Pi Kapp. Pi Kapp offers pretty much every aspect of what a fraternity is. They have good IM’s, a great brotherhood, high standards in scholarship, Push Events, and one of the only fraternities still growing today! We have a very unique pledge class with our diversity. We have guys that our completely different from each other coming together as one, including our nerds to our foreign exchange brothers from France. We would all like to better the fraternity by joining committees or one day being on exec. Our mission “we will lead” is our goal and shall always be our goal. We understand that we are the future of the organization and we take full responsibility and cannot wait to make our impact on the fraternity!
Push Camp 2010
E
very year, many men of the Delta Delta Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi choose to spend their spring break doing service rather than be somewhere tropical, and this year was no different. PUSH Camp this year was located in Camp Twin Lakes in Rutledge, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta. From Sunday through Thursday, sixteen Delta Delta brothers worked alongside brothers from Virginia Tech, Miami University of Ohio, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Texas at Tyler to construct an outdoor amphitheater for people with disabilities who would attend the camp in the future. Not only did we complete this, but we finished early enough to build some extra benches for the park. It wasn’t all work though. Over the course of our time at the camp, the brothers that went on the trip not only became closer, but we managed to bond with the other chapters as well. By enjoying the activities around the camp during the evening, such as softball and basketball, we came to know and became quick friends with all of our national brothers. It was a week that allowed the brothers of Pi Kappa Phi to do something that would help people with disabilities for many years to come, and let us truly live out our mission: “We will redefine fraternity as a brotherhood of leaders.” Greg Cejas, ∆∆ 732

Pledge Class Fall 2009
T
he Fall 2009 pledge class of the Delta Delta Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi continues to grow as a major part of the fraternity. Looking back, from the excitement of Rush Week to the recent experiences of putting our names on the wall, it has been an exhilarating year. All nine of us have become active and reliable brothers of Pi Kappa Phi and passionate Men of Class. It can definitely be said that we have had the time of our lives learning about and being incorporated into this chapter. As several of us already are serving on committees and leading events, it can be ensured that our pledge class will positively influence this chapter for years to come. With each day we look forward to more involvement and experiences with our brotherhood. It is our responsibility to ensure that the Delta Delta chapter continues in excellence for past and future members. We take this responsibility head on and look forward to being the leaders of tomorrow. Yours in Pi Kappa Phi, Dan Gunn, ∆∆730

Greek Week 2010
E
very year as the snow melts and spring arrives, the Greek community on Truman's Campus comes alive. This year was no different, as Pi Kappa Phi prepared to defend its Greek Week ’09 title. Joining us this year on Team Count Chocula were the men of Delta Chi, Alpha Tau Omega, Phi Sigma Kappa, and the women of Sigma Kappa. The week’s events allowed us to meet and get familiar with other Greeks on Truman’s campus. The week revolved around cereal-themed events like trivia, scavenger hunts, improv and Greek Olympics. The week, as always, is anchored by Lip Sync, the best song and dance competition around. Apart from participating in the events, the Delta Delta chapter had three members on Greek Week committee: Br. Josh Wills, Br. Alex Halama, and Br. Jon Davis. Aside from the members on committee, Br. Jon Gatzke served as Greek Week Director, aka King GreekWeek. These four brothers did a fantastic job in coordinating one heck of a week for the rest of us. Throughout the week, – continued on back

Alumni News
ello! My name is Dan Costello and I am currently a sophomore at Truman and a brother in Pi Kappa Phi. For the past few months I have been studying in Galway, Ireland. It has been everything I expected and more. Although I cannot take classes here that relate in any way to my major back home, there was no way that I was going to pass an opportunity like this. Studying abroad can be one of the best decisions you can make while in college, not only because this may be the only time to live in a foreign country for five months, but also because of the people and culture that will influence you forever. Another great reason for being abroad for so long is that you can travel out-side the country you are studying in. Thus far, I have been to almost every major city in Belgium and to Amsterdam, both of which were not only completely different from the United States, but also very different from Ireland. Traveling is very cheap in Europe, which is why we plan travel to Germany, Switzerland, and then to Venice, Florence, and Rome in Italy for our spring break coming up in a couple of weeks. We also will travel to London, Scotland, and hopefully Madrid by the end of May. By the time I get home this summer, I will have traveled more than I probably will in my entire life, which is why the thousands in loans I have taken out are completely worth it. You cannot put a price on an experience like studying abroad, and I am sure any alumni who have will agree with me. When in my life would I be able to say that I have chased cows on the Irish countryside, toured some of the most amazing castles I have ever seen, climbed to the rooftops of my hostel in Belgium to view the city at night, or even spending a night on a subway train in downtown Brussels because of a crazed hostel employee who just “didn’t trust me”? My journey here is not over yet, but to anyone I meet, I encourage it completely. My time here will have a great impact on me and will influence a lot of what happens in my future.
