Volume 23 Issue 1 24th Annual Rose Ball It’s that time of year again...many of you may have received mailings and e-mails notifying you of our 24th annual Rose Ball weekend to be held the weekend of May 16-18 in St. Simons Island, GA. The fun begins Friday night after check-in we an a l u m n i i n i t i a t i o n scheduled at a location TBA. We have a block of reserved rooms at the Best Western Island Inn located at 301 Main St. St. Simons Island, GA

31522.

The banquet and a w a r d s ceremony will also be held at the Best Western Island Inn in their conference r o o m beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 17th. An opportunity to dance the night away will be provided after the awards ceremony.

Tickets for Rose Ball are $120 for a couple and $60 for a single.

EY received 2nd place in the 1st annual Spirit competition held during Homecoming week recently.

♦

At Dance Marathon this spring EY won the “most spirited award” for having the most members f r o m a n y single organization in attendance.

♦

The GIVE Center awarded us as the Fraternity of the Semester in Spring of ‘07 and Organization of the Year for ‘06—’07.

♦

The President’s Service Award Gold Level (minimum 1000 service hours) for the 5th straight year.

♦

Pi Kappa Phi was the 1st organization on campus to receive an Inspire by Example Grant.

EY Spring Rush ‘08 This spring marked the date of EY’s first rush since finishing the sanctions passed down by the school. While it was a large part of the chapter’s members first rush everything went very well with the use of our resources we were able to finish renovating the new house in time for it to be used for rush. We received many compliments on the appearance of the house and of the friendliness displayed by

the brothers which helped us land 16 pledges, placing us 2nd among the fraternities for associates received during the formal rush period.

The chapter would like to thank all of its advisors and all of the alumni who made it possible for us to have such a well put together rush and allowed us to be as organized as possible by donating money or time to help.

New EY Chapter Website Brothers please go to www.gcsupikapps.com and check out the new web site. It is still a work in progress, but as of right now it features our upcoming events, chapter pictures, an active brother list, important links for interested rushees, and a comprehensive rushee interest form. Also the new website comes with a brotherhood site which includes an email account. The site, brothers.gcsupikapps.com, is completely customizable. If you have not received a log-in name please fill out the Alumni Login Request form. A link to the form

is available at the bottom of the home page. On the brother page there is a link for setting up your personalized web page (www.gcsupikapps.com/ newuser). This website can be an integral part of our rebuilding of our family lines which have been lost. So if possible please be sure to check out the chapter website.

Pedal for Push On January 30th we started our first successful fundraiser of the semester called Pedal for Push.

The brothers took hour long shifts and pedaled two stationary bikes for thirty six hours while also enjoying music blaring from loudspeakers rigged up to help us pass the time . It was a Push America/Pi Kappa Phi fundraiser awareness event. We raffled off a 20’ flat screen TV and gave away a free raffle for a $25 gift certificate to a favorite local restaurant, Little Tokyo. Z97 came out for their Winning Wednesdays program and gave us an opportunity to be on the radio. WGUR, the school radio station, also gave us some air time to publicize the event. We have had two articles in the school newspaper, The Colonnade. The publicity for this event was off the charts. I had students come up to me and say

that they were in high spirits because of the music playing around the fountain at A&S and it felt like our school was a larger school because of Pedal for Push. We also raised a total of approximately $2,900. We had a few local companies sponsor us, a grant from the Give Center, and Roy Beck donated the money to buy the TV to raffle. We can not wait to hold it again next year. Pedal for Push was a great event for the chapter and one of the best fundraisers we have had in a few years.

To the left is a picture of all the brothers at the completion of the event.

This event plus our annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament will allow us to donate well over $3000 to Push America this year.

We are still in the process of trying to furnish and finish a few minor renovations, but the house is in spectacular condition.

EYe of Pi Kappa Phi

New Home of Epsilon Upsilon In early January this year, Epsilon Upsilon got a new place to call home. Nestled on 224 N. Columbia St. in the historic district of Milledgeville, our new home raises the overall bar for fraternities on campus.

As soon as the house was purchased, brothers from the chapter poured hours upon hours into the house to get it ready for our first rush in a year. We completed all the painting, cleaning and setup in less than two weeks and had one of the most successful rushes for our chapter in a long time (16 recruits). The home, built circa 1904 (no that’s not a joke), has heart pine floors throughout and has a grand hall that carries all the way to the back of the house with 14 foot ceilings which displays all of our past composites. The two front rooms turn away from the typical manner in which our chapter has treated its previous houses; new precedents have been set in the overall attitude about what a fraternity house should be, a place for fun but also a place to garner the respect of our campus and the greater

community. The room on the front left of the house is a dining room with an elegant 118in dining table. The room to the right, currently the parlor, is a place to boast our awards and trophies. Set for a more informal use, the den of the home has stadium sofa seating, a wall mounted 42in LCD flat screen, and 5.1 surround sound.

Currently the house is set to hold 4 brothers: 2 in private rooms and 2 double bunked in one room. The next time you are in town please come by and see the new house. The landlord is a Pi Kappa Phi from Georgia Southern and bought the home for us as a long term investment on his end. It is always available for purchase for the chapter and we have first option to buy. This house is here to stay and will always be ready to receive guests, alumni, parents, and ladies as it is set to stay a high class home for our high class fraternity. Santa’s Miracle Fund

Santa’s Miracle Fund is an excellent charity organization that Ep Up is extremely proud to support, and not only does this charity give children an amazing Christmas, but it also allows for incredible volunteer possibilities and life-changing opportunities.

I am very excited to inform you that we have experienced another very successful and magical year with Santa’s Miracle Fund. If you remember from last year’s newsletter, Santa’s Miracle Fund is a nonprofit organization started by myself as a high school senior. The mission of Santa’s Miracle Fund is to provide disabled children with the best Christmas of their lives. We accomplish this by giving them an entire day of Christmas fun which includes lunch and a movie with Santa Claus. After they tell Santa what they want for Christmas, we surprise the children and take them to Toys-R-Us, where they each receive a $100 shopping spree with their family and friends.

Thanks in part to the enormous support of Pi Kappa Phi, Santa’s Miracle Fund raised over $15,000 last year and gave over 85 children the best Christmas of their lives.

Now in 2008, we are looking forward to future opportunities for our organization. As you all know, Push America serves to build the leaders of tomorrow by serving people with disabilities today. Given that the Epsilon Upsilon chapter of Pi Kappa Phi has always fully supported Santa’s Miracle Fund and its drive to better the lives of children with disabilities, Push America has become very

interested in the possibility of taking Santa’s Miracle Fund national as one of their annual programs.

Currently, the Santa’s Miracle Fund board of directors is working on an extensive proposal aimed at granting us a three year trial period as an official program of Push America. We will be meeting with Push America’s CEO, Chad Coltrane, near midApril to speak with him in detail about our intentions. Donations are highly appreciated and know that as always, 100% of the money raised each year goes to giving these deserving children the best Christmas of their lives.
