Brother Charlie Schreiber Wins Student Body President Junior brother Charlie Schreiber recently won the election for Miami University Student Body president. This was a great moment for Charlie and for the Eta Upsilon chapter. Charlie and his VP, Courtney Bernard of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, won the election by a vote of 2351 to 2251. This was the closest election in school history and the first time in recent memory that a member outside of the Associated Student Government has won the presidency. Charlie and Courtney ran on the platform of “Empowering Miami.” Some of their ideas were to centralize academic advising offices, medical amnesty for underage students in need of medical care due to drinking, and increasing the night-time lighting on campus to ensure student safety. The brothers of Pi Kappa Phi played a huge role in helping Charlie to campaign and to get out the vote. During the two weeks of campaigning, brothers could be seen campus-wide handing out fliers, T-shirts, coozies, and rallying support for the Empower Miami campaign. We are proud of Charlie and the leadership our chapter is building here at Miami, now and in the years to come!

HY Alumnus Spotlight Gordy Seifring HY#221: Gordy recently married is wife Sam in Oxford on April 27, 2013. The wedding party stopped by the house and got to know the active chapter in the days leading up to the wedding, and we even lavaliered his wife Sam. To commemorate the occasion, Gordy and Sam even created their own bagel which is still hanging on the menu wall at Bagel and Deli called the “Gordy and Sam-wich” 2

Supreme Chapter Brings Accolades for Eta Up The 52nd Supreme Chapter proved to be as grand as the city that hosted it. Washington, D.C. played host to over 1300 undergraduate and alumni Pi Kapps that met to do the national business of the fraternity and celebrate the greatness of its chapters across the country. A key component of the Supreme Chapter pomp and circumstance includes recognizing the accomplishments of its 167 chapters across the country. Eta Upsilon was awarded the distinction of a Champion Master Chapter. This award is only bestowed upon twenty chapters that have gone above and beyond the call to build the ideal chapter. This year marks the third year in a row that Eta Upsilon has been given the honor of Champion Master Chapter. While Supreme Chapter proved to be a time of celebration, the national staff kept the delegates busy with a great deal of business that was passed by the body throughout four sessions of legislative business. The Supreme Chapter successfully passed a wide range of legislation that will assist in the building of a better fraternity for undergraduates and alumni alike. Major strides were made in the improvement of Pi Kapp Properties and their assistance to provide competitive housing to all of its chapters around the country. A new measure that was passed will have every undergraduate brother pay 10 dollars to their national dues in order to create an assistance fund to chapters who are seeking housing. Properties encouraged passage of this measure in order for students to be directly involved in the building of better national fraternity. As per tradition, the Supreme Banquet on Saturday night included the awarding of Mr. Pi Kappa Phi to past National President Nathan Hightower. Nathan Hightower has served the national fraternity since 1971, and was National President during the chartering of Eta Upsilon in 1996. Outgoing President Mark Jacobs reported that the state of Pi Kappa Phi is strong despite the tribulations that fraternities and our country as a whole. The new National President, Dudley Woody, addressed the body on Sunday, and charged the chapters to continue to build a strong fraternity, and to do their share to make it so.

Eta Up-Date

Message from the Historian: Scott Rice The Eta Upsilon chapter is very excited about the opportunity to begin connecting with our alumni and believe that this newsletter is the first step. We have not had an “Eta-Up-Date since 1998 and are proud to bring it back and connect our active brothers with those who are no longer at Miami University! Please look for an Eta Up-Date at the conclusion of each semester as we are in the process of making big moves in the Greek and Miami communities!
